The final round of the 2019 Shannons Nationals takes place this month with six categories to put on a spectacle for the final time in 2019 at The Bend Motorsport Park. It’s been a while since the Shannons Nationals has visited a racetrack twice in a year, but the 2019 season has been a special one, so it calls for a special occasion. Of the six categories competing in the season finale, only one of them was at the first round in South Australia with the carsales TCR Australia Series enjoying a successful inaugural season. This year has seen records broken, high octane racing and thousands of motor sport fans around the country entertained at the previous six rounds, as TCR Australia and S5000 have created a lot of buzz and hype. This month, we gear up again for the last time in 2019 with a number of the categories to go right down to the wire and crown their new champions.

This year has seen records broken, high octane racing and thousands of motor sport fans around the country entertained.

The round takes place at The Bend Motorsport Park on 15-17 November. Category breakdowns continued on the next page.

round seven

CARSALES TCR AUSTRALIA

S5000 AUSTRALIA

Will Brown has been electrifying all year so far and is a deserving winner of the inaugural season with a round still remaining.

A huge international debut at Sandown in September saw the crowds flock into the Victorian circuit to get close to the new beasts – led by Former Formula 1 star Rubens Barrichello.

The battle for second is the one to keep an eye on this round with Dylan O’Keefe still in the box seat to pick up a runner-up position after piling the pressure onto Brown all year. The series, which has welcomed a number of international drivers from the World TCR series throughout the year, has been nothing short of a success story and looks to have a solid end to 2019.

8 // T H E R AC I NG M AGA ZI NE

While it was a anti-climactic end to a great weekend as the feature race was cut short after being red flagged – those who were there to witness the qualifying races were left impressed – and it’s only the beginning. This month at The Bend, its Australia’s newest race category on Australia’s newest world class race track and with two qualifying races and a main race to form part of the event once again, it’s an exciting way to set up next year’s official season.

P h ot o: S pe e d S h ots P h otogra p hy

Phot o : Speed Shot s Phot o graphy

THE EXCEL NATIONALS Quite possibly the most popular category around the country – all the state’s best drivers will make their way to world-class track in an exhibition style event. The category will also be boasting the most cars on the track with more than 50 expected to be competing, with the format to include three qualifying races before a feature race towards the end of the weekend.

P hot o: Stre e t to S cre e n Me d ia

PORSCHE MICHELIN GT3 CUP CHALLENGE AUSTRALIA The one-make series enters its final round with Harri Jones having one hand on the title after claiming a clean sweep of top three finishes during the previous round at Sandown. The only driver standing in his way is Aaron Love, the youngster picking up a pair of wins at Sandown to keep the title fight going for just one more round. Third placed Max Vidau’s hunt for the title is all but over but the Sonic driver still has an opportunity to have his say in who wins the year, after claiming maximum points at the same track in 2018.

Phot o : Speed Shot s Phot o graphy

The beauty about the round is that it’s a clean slate for everyone and there will be only one winner at the end of the special round.

THE AUSTRALIAN PROTOTYPE SERIES

MRF TYRES AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTION CAR SERIES

The closest battle out of all six categories lies in with the Prototypes with up to four drivers holding a realistic chance of claiming the title.

The Series has enjoyed more track time than any other category during the Shannons Nationals in 2019 and it will finish the same way it started, with a number of endurance races.

A brilliant start to the year saw David Barram rocket to first place and hold his position, only for Daniel Gonzalez and John Paul Drake to reign him back in – the former sitting just two points shy of the leader and growing in confidence by the day. The series has seen record numbers hit the track in 2019 and will be looking to finish this more than successful season on a high – starting with a fight to the final race.

Reigning champion Beric Lynton has been unable to recreate the feats of the last year, opening up the door for Chris Lillis to lead the outright standings ahead of series veterans Grant and Iain Sherrin. It might not be as close as the Australian Prototype Series but there is just as much riding on the final round with four crews in with a sniff to take out the title.
