WELCOME: ENTHUSIASTS

Welcome to this weekend’s Shannons Nationals, Round 2 for 2019, which is the 14th year of PIARC’s (Phillip Island Auto Racing Club) partnership with this racing program. This weekend’s event is promoted and organised by PIARC, and we wish you a warm welcome to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, which we like to be known as Australia’s most picturesque racing circuit and as always is beautifully presented by the circuit owners the Linfox Group via the Phillip Island Operations P/L management and staff. This series gives us the opportunity to showcase national categories on this fabulous world class race circuit and with over 30 rounds of “The Nationals” since their inception 2006, keeping you entertained with varied programs, great racing and new categories. Coming on stream this year are the exciting new S5000 V8 Open Wheelers later in the year with TCR 2 Litre Turbo Touring Cars which debuted at Round 1 at Sydney and which in this Round have a 30 minutes Race Saturday followed by two 30 minutes Races Sunday separated by a 45 minute show time feature conducted in the Pit Lane. This Meeting traditionally has a round of the Australian Endurance Championship with races for Australian GTs partaking in a 500 Km Enduro, which this year changes to 180 minute format. The weekend again sees the Porsche GT3 Challenge with three Sprint Races 2 on Saturday at of 20 minutes each and then an exciting 45 minute final on Sunday. The program deviates from its high end Sports Car and International TCRs theme to encompass the International based Formula 4 open wheel cars with six 20 minute races making up Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2019 National Championship. All of the marshals here today are volunteers who are trained by the

sport for their various roles, and the majority of them are our own PIARC members. The remainder come from other dedicated groups who lend their specialities to what we are doing. These extend to services such as Medical, Fire, Flags, Timing and Scrutiny. We work in close cooperation with the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) and with their support and involvement; we have a licensing and training program for marshals at all the circuits in Australia. This provides for a consistently high level of skills and application of rules and procedures at CAMS events; a standard that is widely recognised around the world. If you are interested in more involvement as either an enthusiast, spectator or maybe an official or driver, have a look at our PIARC website at www.piarc.com.au You will find information and application forms for our various motoring based activities and ways you can join us in this exciting and demanding past-time we call motorsport. Through us, you can also gain access to motorsport including other events here at Phillip Island such as Supercar races, International Motorcycle races, various National, State and Club based Race Car series, as well as the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. We look forward to seeing you again here at the circuit later in the year or at our clubrooms at the Moorabbin Airport, where we enjoy our club life and social life away from the track at the Flight Deck Bar & Grill. To finish off 2019 on a high note at Phillip Island, we have the traditional and exciting Island Magic Race Meeting on November 23-24 which will have all its usual iconic events. Stay safe and enjpy the action!

ISLAND SHOOTOUT 8 // T H E R AC I NG M AGA ZI NE

After a highly successful season opener at Sydney Motorsport Park, the Shannons Nationals returns for the second round of the year, with the iconic Phillip Island Grand Prix set to host. It will be the first of three visits to Victoria for the Nationals, with the event to take place on the island across the long weekend from 7-9 June. While the round will feature less categories than the first round, it is expected to be just as entertaining thanks to the more track time for the four competing categories.

The one-make series enters its third round for the year after rounds in Tasmania and Sydney with Harri Jones leading Max Vidau heading into the midway point.

PORSCHE MICHELIN GT3 CUP CHALLENGE

THE CATEGORIES

Both drivers have claimed two round wins each, but Jones sits above Vidau despite the latter claiming four consecutive victories thus far due to a critical DNF in Sydney.

The Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge is scheduled for Saturday morning qualifying and two races later in the day, while Sunday will hold the third and final race.

CARSALES TCR AUSTRALIA SERIES

Outside of their Formula 4 duties, Suhle and Love will also be competing in the Porsche Challenge, and will be looking for some serious points sitting in third and fourth.

There was a lot to like about the new series’ first hit out in Sydney. While Wall Racing’s Tony D’Alberto steered his Honda Civic to the first ever pole position and Jason Bright secured the historic victory in the Volkswagen Golf, it was HMO Customer Racing’s Will Brown who ended the weekend with outright bragging rights. The 2016 CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Champion took out the second and third race of the inaugural weekend, putting him at the top of the standings ahead of the second round. It will be a similar schedule to the first round with Qualifying on Saturday morning setting up race one later in the day, while Sunday will again have a double header with two consecutive races.

Luis Leeds currently leads the Championship after claiming round wins at both Albert Park and Sydney Motorsport Park, becoming the first driver to cross the 100-point barrier this season. The first of six races gets underway on Friday afternoon, before competitors undergo a hectic four race Saturday. The final race will take place on Sunday.

The championship has been boosted by the inclusion of 2017 Virgin Australia Supercars Champion Jamie Whincup, who will join Yassir Shahin in the South Australian’s Mercedes-AMG GT3 Last year’s corresponding round saw Audi R8 LMS pilots Tony Bates and Daniel Gaunt claim victory over Steve Richards and Michael Almond in the BMW M6 GT3. Twigg and co-driver Tony D’Alberto finished the event in third.

CAMS PAYCE AUSTRALIAN FORMULA 4 CHAMPIONSHIP

CAMS AUSTRALIAN ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP It will be the first of two double round weekends for the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship with the category to undergo six races.

The CAMS Australian Endurance Championship begins its first round of three as defending champion Max Twigg looks to go back-to-back in the endurance championship, as well as scoring valuable points in the CAMS Australian GT Championship.
