This weekend we also welcome back the Touring Car Masters and the Kumho Tyre V8 Touring Cars after they joined us for our first round at Sandown in April; both categories feature bumper-fields in what will be a great tin-top battle.

This will also be the final round of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, which has seen a tight-battle between young guns Hamish Hardeman and Jaxon Evans, with the win expected to go down to the wire on Saturday.

GOOD SPORTS As we head into the final two rounds of the Australian Sports Racer and Sports Sedans Series, we look at what is yet to come and who could be victorious in both of these great series. WORDS: Richard Craill IMAGES: Nathan Wong Now more than any other point of the season so far, there is an enormous chance that Tony Ricciardello will end 2016 with a record 10th Australian Sports Sedan Series title to his credit. The West Australians season has been his Sports Sedan career in a microcosm – fast when he needed to be, reliable when he had to be and consistent all of the time. As his nearest rival, the John Gourlay Audi A4 driven by Jack Perkins, Ricciardello was there to pounce and grab the points. Reliability has been the key of the 2016 season and for Jack Perkins, the core reason why he isn’t leading the series. The Audi won the first three races of the year at Sandown and extended Perkins’ series lead with a win in the first race at Round 2 … but the Supercars race-winner failed to finish races two and three at Winton and Ricciardello was there to strike with a pair of race victories. At Queensland, Perkins again found himself in a similar situation with pole and a victory in the first race before a further pair of non-finishes, handing more points to the little red Alfa. While Perkins has won five races this year to Ricciardello’s four, Tony has been on the podium in every one of them while Jack’s four DNFs have badly hurt his score.
4 | THE RACING MAGAZINE
The big question is, can Perkins still win the series? Of course he can – though he’ll need the luck of the draw to swing significantly back to his corner in the final two rounds. There’s no doubt that this year the Audi is the faster of the two cars on raw speed and Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park will suit it perfectly. But the 193 point margin is significant: a clean-sweep of a round is worth 135 so even if Perkins wins three times at the Island this week, Tony can afford to finish second (or lower) in each race to effectively rule Perkins out of series contention going into the final round. Essentially though, it does simplify the job for both drivers. Perkins must win – there’s simply no other option. Ricciardello just needs to finish every race and title number ten will be his – and Guinness will be calling to update their record books for the second time in two years. Of course we must keep our eyes fixed on other contenders too. A supremely consistent year has Victorian champion Michael Robinson second in the series. Thirty-one points behind Robinson is Daniel Tamasi, with his old man Steven Tamasi sitting two points behind. Corvette driver Stuart Inwood is fifth in the standings and only a further five points back from the Tamasi
team, giving us a strong battle for second and third place in the series going into the final two rounds. Over in the Australian Sports Racer world the series picture is significantly more open than it is in the Sports Sedans – in fact, it’s positively ‘game on’ going into the final pair of events this year. Roger I’Anson leads the series and for the quietly spoken South Australian driver, a look at the standings will be one of the most welcome signs in his racing career. Several years of horrific luck and mechanical issues have ruled out I’Anson from a title tilt in the series – dating back to when Adam Proctor edged him out in a dramatic Wakefield Park finale two years ago. Yet after a shaky start to his year at Sandown’s season opener, I’Anson has been in stunning form lately and a sweep of victories at Queensland Raceway last time out, propelling him to a 31-point championship lead over Jason Makris. “For the championship we are having a good run, a few of the other quick guys have had some bad luck, so while it is panning out all right for us we wish the other guys had had some more luck,” I’Anson said. “You just don’t know what will happen though, we could break something small and miss a whole round, just have to see how it goes.”
The outright series fight in Sports Racers is thoroughly intriguing this year however, with just about every varied aspect of the series represented in the top-10. While I’Anson and Makris sit 1-2 in the series in their West Sports Racers, consistent Radical SR3 competitor Peter Johnston sits third, narrowly ahead of Formula 1000 frontrunner Josh Cranston. Fellow F1000 racer Terry Peovitis sits fifth, SR2 class leader JohnPaul Drake sixth outright and omnipresent Radical runner John Morriss seventh. Morriss is less than 100 points from the overall lead, with 119 points on offer each time out should a driver sweep a pole position and three race victories. The fast, flowing scenes of Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park will make the final two rounds of the year very interesting – the weight disadvantage of the Radicals compared to the lighter, more nimble Wests will be set to play a smaller role at the high speed circuits. This means the likes of Johnston and Morriss could challenge for outright victories in the closing stages, while I’Anson will need to be on the top of his game to hold out his nearest rivals running in the West Race Cars brigade – especially the ever-consistent Makris.
“For the championship we are having a good run, a few of the other quick guys have had some bad luck, so while it is panning out all right for us we wish the other guys had had some more luck,” Roger I’Anson
CRANSTON ON THE MEND Adam Cranston’s enormous rollover at Queensland Raceway dominated the headlines that weekend – but the long-time Sports Racer competitor remains in good spirits despite the enormous crash. Cranston (#56 West) and Josh Townsend (#9 F1000) were battling for second position in the opening race at QR, when Townsend ‘lost the rear’ of his F1000, causing him to spin across the track. As Cranston was following close behind, he was unable to avoid making front-on contact with the side of Townsend’s car, sending his racer into the air and into a stunning sequence of five rolls before coming to rest in the sand trap on the exit of Turn 2. “Adam is feeling not too bad, he has a suspected broken toe and possibly has broken a couple of other bones in his foot, but he is in good spirits and excited to get back out there again,” West Race Cars’ Aaron Steer said. “The chassis is all straight and most of the damage is to the bodywork, floor, plumbing and suspension – the core of the car has all held together well and Adam says it didn’t feel like he was in major trouble at any time. It was just unfortunate that he hurt his foot in the flip. “All of the West family are rallying around him and we hope he gets better quickly.”

fuelling the championships It might not be a sexy subject, but one Aussie company is proudly making the racing wheels go around thanks to a fire for all things fuel. WORDS: Richard Craill IMAGES: RaceFuels Archive
“FUEL,” says Mark Tierney, a director of Melbourne-based motorsport staple Race Fuels, “Is not a sexy part of going motor racing.” And that’s probably the truth. Despite distributing the product that quite literally makes the internalcombustion wheels go round, it’s hard to get people excited about their racing fuels. You put it in the tank and it makes the car go: as a consumable, it doesn’t change the outcome of a race for a spectator in the same way, say, a soft tyre does when compared to a hard. To most, it’s just a useable commodity that costs more money the higher the Octane number is. Naturally Tierney, a long time racer who now helms a business that distributes nearly one million litres of fuel around every state in Australia per year, doesn’t share that opinion. Race Fuels was founded in 2003 and started distributing ELF racing fuels and products in Melbourne and Tasmania.
10 | THE RACING MAGAZINE
“It started with me dropping a few drums down to Sandown or Phillip Island in the back of a BA Falcon Ute – we later added a box trailer – on Friday morning and then we were done for the weekend,” Tierney remembers. Today the business is the primary supplier of fuel to the V8 Supercars, Shannons Nationals, Australian GT, Bathurst’s 12 and 6 hour races and a host of other events. It makes for a busier schedule than days gone by. “Across the year we would be supplying product to several hundred people each weekend, and that’s before you take into account needing to deliver product to V8 Supercars and the Shannons Nationals. They all operate very professionally and expect a level of service that’s a bit more than dropping off the fuel drum and saying ‘seeya’. “The business is as much about providing that service and support to teams and drivers as it is actually
pumping fuel at race tracks.” The Race Fuels organisation is certainly larger than a Ford Ute and a trailer these days. An enormous B-Double transporter carries the fuel across the country with multiple staff on hand to ensure the product is properly and promptly distributed at each round. RaceFuels does not request pre-bookings, they believe it is their role to carry enough to cover all contingencies. “We have four types of fuel that we supply and we carry enough of each to make sure everyone that’s going to be at the race meeting is catered for, but we try to do more than that too,” Tierney explains. “At a lot of events like the Kuhmo V8 rounds, for instance, they’re only allowed to have 60 litres of fuel in the garage at a time so part of it is making sure that everyone is resupplied across the weekend. We go to them instead of them coming to us so that customer service side of things is very important.
“It’s a logistical challenge to say the least, the start of the year in particular. We’ve already been to the Bathurst 12 hour and Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, then back to Melbourne for the Grand Prix. Then it’s a quick turnaround to make sure we’re in Bathurst on the Thursday for the 6-hour and then we head back down to Sandown for the first Shannons Nationals event of 2016. “They all need fuel and in that month we’re supplying more than 1000 competitors directly. “We even go to the test days and spend a lot of time predicting who is testing where so we can plan our supply. It is not uncommon for RaceFuels to attend multiple circuits on the same day”. But wait, there’s more. In this day and age when you need to sign a waiver before you go to the bathroom, there’s a significant safety effort around the Race Fuels business to the point where it’s unlikely people could go racing without the procedures and standards companies like Race Fuels provide. Sean Scott, RaceFuels’ operations manager, has a full time job preparing the compliance paperwork ahead of a race meeting. “It’s a fact of life that the events wouldn’t get a permit unless they had a fuel management plan in place,” Tierney says. “There’s so many regulations and OH&S issues surrounding the control of dangerous goods in quantities that it’s not feasible for people to bring their own fuel to the track, especially at major events, any more. You just wouldn’t get a permit, so our role is to take that issue out of the equation and make sure it’s safe and we’re conscious of taking away everything we bring in.” Hailing from a passionate racing family, Tierney believes it’s critical that the enjoyment of the sport has to be number one in operating the business. “I think you have to be very fond of it to be involved at the level we are,” he says. “We try and go above and beyond to help people out. We’ve had several Melbourne teams without space in their transporter come to us and go ‘hey, could you take a drum back to Melbourne for us?’ and we’ll do it and drop it at their workshop. It’s no problem. “It’s all part of what we do and hopefully it’s making it better for everyone. We certainly get a buzz out of it.”

Fifteen-year-old Cameron Shields has been having a dream run in the National class, wrapping up the title at Queensland Raceway over a month ago. It is expected that Shields will run in the Premier class for the remaining rounds of the season. After the two front-runners collided in the opening race at Queensland Raceway, Roland Legge scored his firstever Australian Formula 3 Premier Series round win, and did it without winning a single race. Two-time Formula 3 champion Tim Macrow had a difficult weekend in Queensland, but will bounce back this round at Phillip Island.
The Kumho Cup class also returns for 2016, with Ross McAlpine leading from Shane Wilson.

DEAR Enthusiasts Welcome to Round 6 of the Shannons Nationals presented by Penrite. This event is promoted and organised by PIARC; we wish you a warm welcome to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, Australia’s most picturesque racing circuit. As always the circuit is beautifully presented by owners, the Linfox Group, via the Phillip Island Operations P/L management and staff.
This series showcases many national categories on this historically significant world class race circuit which this year celebrates its 64th CAMS OH&S Manager anniversary. Andrew Fisher We also celebrate 27 rounds of the Nationals Judge of Pit Lane Speed

since its inception in 2006, keeping you entertained with varied programs and great racing.
Later this year PIARC and the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit celebrate 50 years since the inaugural race meeting on 15 December 1956. Keep your eye out for some special celebratory activities to mark this auspicious occasion. This meeting is the other end of the spectrum from May’s traditionally longer endurance focused races; this round is packed with numerous short and sharp sprint races, featuring eight different categories from exciting Porsche GT3s to pocket rocket Superkarts and a host of Touring Car and Sports Car categories inbetween to keep non-stop racing before your eyes. GT enthusiasts receive their second fix at the Island this year with the new Australian GT Trophy Series, with two 50-minute mini endurance races for these exotic older models. All of the marshals here today are volunteers who are trained for their various roles, and the majority of them are our own PIARC members. The remainder come from other dedicated groups who lend their specialities to what we are doing. These extend to services such as Medical, Fire, Flags, Timing and Scrutiny. We work in close cooperation with the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) and, with their support and involvement, we have a licensing and training program for marshals at all the circuits in Australia. This provides for a consistently high level of skills and application of rules and procedures at CAMS events; a standard that is widely recognised around the world. If you are interested in more involvement as either an enthusiast, spectator or maybe an official or driver, have a look at our PIARC website at www.piarc.com.au Through PIARC you can also gain access to motor sport including other events here at Phillip Island such as Supercars races, international motorcycle races, various national, state and club based series as well as the Australian Grand Prix. To finish off 2016 on a high note at Phillip Island, we have the traditional Island Magic Race Meeting on November 26-27, which will have all its usual iconic events plus as an added bonus a world record 150 Improved Production Cars competing for the 2016 Improved Production Nationals Crown.
