V8 TOURING CARS RETURN

The Kumho Tyre V8 Touring Car Series have been long-time fan favourites on the Shannons Nationals’ calendar, making their national circuit racing debut on the Nationals line-up in 2008. The Shannons Nationals is pleased to welcome the Kumho V8 touring cars back to Phillip Island, in what will be their penultimate round for 2017. Brad Jones Racing’s Jack Smith has been a dominant force in this year’s series, doubling-up his Supercars racing duties by competing in the Dunlop Super2 Series. Smith comes off the bat from a highly successful round at Queensland Raceway, taking all

three wins whilst fending off strong competition. “I’ve never had a clean sweep before, so it’s a great feeling,” Smith said at Ipswich. “The car was great, but it wasn’t easy with competition from Anton [De Pasquale] and Tyler [Greenbury] all weekend. “There’s still a long way to go with two rounds left, so it’s great to have a bigger lead.”

Kumho V8 rookie Jordan Boys currently sits second to Smith, who is having a fantastic debut season in the series. Last year’s runner-up Tyler Greenbury sits third, while Kumho Cup leader Michael Anderson rounds out the top four outright positions. The series will head to the Muscle Car Masters in October for the final round of the season at Sydney Motorsport Park.

CLASSES Car eligibility in the Kumho V8 touring cars currently sees former race-winning Supercars ranging from the Ford Falcon EB to the Holden Commodore VE, race in the series. Depending what vehicle the competitor is racing, three separate classes run in the series.

The Championship class traditionally sees up-and-coming racers compete, who will run either a FG Falcon or VE Commodore. Teams competing in this class are usually aligned with either a Supercars Championship or Super2 Series team.

Kumho Cup was introduced in 2017, replacing the existing Privateer class. Heritage will see touring cars famously remembered in the 1990's race this weekend, with an EB Falcon and VS Commodore amongst the field.

LIVERIES

If there’s one thing anyone can agree on in motor sport, it’s the fact we all love a fantastic racing livery. One of the great things about the Kumho V8 series are the paint-jobs running around in the field, bringing all of the nostalgic feelings back when they run up and down pit lane.

DOWN TO THE WIRE In what is arguably one of the closest national series battles in 2017, this weekend will determine the first ever winner of the Australian Prototype Series. Mark Laucke is currently the man to beat, taking the lead during the penultimate round of the series at Queensland Raceway. After dropping his two worst results, Laucke holds a 48-point gap to Terry Peovitis, however the series begins to tighten further down the ladder. Open-wheel racer Peovitis only holds a two-point advantage over Chris Sutton, leaving second and third outright wide-open. Philip Hughes had an unfortunate round at Queensland Raceway, losing his series lead to Laucke due to an engine failure in practice.Hughes is now 80 points behind the leader in fourth and will need a bit of luck to fall his way this weekend. A clean sweep at Winton back in June saw a boost to Jason Makris’ series campaign, which sees him sit only 89 points behind Laucke.

John-Paul Drake is next in-line, who is only three points behind Makris in sixth outright. Thirty-eight points will be on offer this weekend for each individual race win, while a point will go to the fastest qualifier and the fastest lap holder for the round. In the way of the series’ classes, Laucke leads P1 and Peovitis already has hands on the FL1 class win. Sutton is currently leading Radical, however Hughes will be a strong challenger for the class victory. Drake holds a decent gap to Gerrit Ruff for the Kumho Cup class, leading the way by 111 points. The Australian Prototype Series will have three races this weekend, with the winner to be crowned after Sunday’s race.

ADVERTORIAL

FUELLING THE FIRE It might not be a sexy subject, but one Aussie company is proudly making the racing wheels go around thanks to a fire for all things fuel. Wo r d s : R i c h ar d Crai l l

I mage s: Ra ce Fue ls A rchiv e

“Fuel,” says Mark Tierney, a director of Melbournebased motor sport staple Race Fuels, “Is not a sexy part of going motor racing.” And that’s probably the truth. Despite distributing the product that quite literally makes the internalcombustion wheels go round, it’s hard to get people excited about their racing fuels. You put it in the tank and it makes the car go: as a consumable, it doesn’t change the outcome of a race for a spectator in the same way, say, a soft tyre does when compared to a hard. To most, it’s just a usable commodity that costs more money the higher the Octane number is. Naturally Tierney, a long time racer who now helms a business that distributes nearly one million litres of fuel around every state in Australia per year, doesn’t share that opinion. Race Fuels was founded in 2003 and started distributing ELF racing fuels and products in Melbourne and Tasmania.

10

|

TH E R A C I NG M AGA ZI NE

“It started with me dropping a few drums down to Sandown or Phillip Island in the back of a BA Falcon Ute – we later added a box trailer – on Friday morning and then we were done for the weekend,” Tierney remembers. Today the business is the primary supplier of fuel to the V8 Supercars, Shannons Nationals, Australian GT, Bathurst’s 12 and 6 Hour races and a host of other events. It makes for a busier schedule than days gone by. “Across the year we would be supplying product to several hundred people each weekend, and that’s before you take into account needing to deliver product to V8 Supercars and the Shannons Nationals. They all operate very professionally and expect a level of service that’s a bit more than dropping off the fuel drum and saying ‘seeya’. “The business is as much about providing that service and support to teams and drivers as it is actually pumping fuel at race tracks.”

The Race Fuels organisation is certainly larger than a Ford Ute and a trailer these days.

could go racing without the procedures and standards companies like Race Fuels provide.

An enormous B-Double transporter carries the fuel across the country with multiple staff on hand to ensure the product is properly and promptly distributed at each round. RaceFuels does not request pre-bookings, they believe it is their role to carry enough to cover all contingencies.

Sean Scott, RaceFuels’ operations manager, has a full time job preparing the compliance paperwork ahead of a race meeting.

“We have four types of fuel that we supply and we carry enough of each to make sure everyone that’s going to be at the race meeting is catered for, but we try to do more than that too,” Tierney explains. “At a lot of events like the Kumho V8 rounds, for instance, they’re only allowed to have 60 litres of fuel in the garage at a time so part of it is making sure that everyone is re-supplied across the weekend. We go to them instead of them coming to us so that customer service side of things is very important. “It’s a logistical challenge to say the least, the start of the year in particular. “We even go to the test days and spend a lot of time predicting who is testing where so we can plan our supply. It is not uncommon for RaceFuels to attend multiple circuits on the same day”. But wait, there’s more. In this day and age when you need to sign a waiver before you go to the bathroom, there’s a significant safety effort around the Race Fuels business to the point where it’s unlikely people

“It’s a fact of life that the events wouldn’t get a permit unless they had a fuel management plan in place,” Tierney says. “There’s so many regulations and OH&S issues surrounding the control of dangerous goods in quantities that it’s not feasible for people to bring their own fuel to the track, especially at major events, any more. You just wouldn’t get a permit, so our role is to take that issue out of the equation and make sure it’s safe and we’re conscious of taking away everything we bring in.” Hailing from a passionate racing family, Tierney believes it’s critical that the enjoyment of the sport has to be number one in operating the business. “I think you have to be very fond of it to be involved at the level we are,” he says. “We try and go above and beyond to help people out. We’ve had several Melbourne teams without space in their transporter come to us and go ‘hey, could you take a drum back to Melbourne for us?’ and we’ll do it and drop it at their workshop. It’s no problem. “It’s all part of what we do and hopefully it’s making it better for everyone. We certainly get a buzz out of it.”

RECORDS BROKEN

One of the big stories in this year’s Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli has been the introduction of Jordan Love into the series. At the penultimate round in Queensland, the Porsche Junior continued to write his fairy tale season, claiming a record ten straight wins and the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy. Love was the first to do that in the GT3 Cup’s history and will enter the final round of the series top of the points. Despite his success this season, he’s remained humble heading into the finale at Phillip Island this weekend. “There are still three more races remaining for the season, so there are plenty of points up for grabs,” Love said. “We’re going to go into Phillip Island with the same attitude as we entered Queensland Raceway and aim to finish the season on a high.”

12

|

T H E R A C I NG M AGA ZI NE

Brenton Grove has been another rookie making waves in the series, who currently sits second to Love… a potential upset could see the Victorian take the series win. Another talking point this season has been the extremely close battle between long-time GT3 Cup competitors Anthony Gilbertson, Sam Shahin and John Karytinos. A consistent run saw Gilbertson grab the lead from Shahin at the previous round, but only heads into the Island with a seven-point gap. “The battle between Sam Shahin, John Karytinos and myself has bee great all year so it was pretty special to have all three of us on the podium,” Gilbertson said at Queensland Raceway. “I can’t wait for Phillip Island.” Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge will wrap-up their season with Race 3 on Saturday.

BOB HITS ‘EM FOR Seventy-two year-old Bob Pearson has been having a dream run in the Australian Production Car Series, taking the last six race wins.

Currently leading the Australian Production Car Cup, the Evo driver will enter this weekend’s round at Phillip Island with a healthy 98-point margin.

Ellexandra Best and Michael Gray have had a great season in class D for the first time, while Brianna Wilson and Nathan Stephens front the E class field.

Pearson managed to take his first four race wins at Sydney Motorsport Park on a solo mission, while his trusty co-driver Rick Bates was unavailable.

The Invitational class sees Gerry Burges in first place, ahead of Lindsay Kearns.

However, the Pro-Duct team reunited further north at Queensland Raceway, where they managed to take both of the endurance race wins – bolstering their respective positions in the Australian Production Car Cup. Second in the Cup standings currently sees Supercars star Chaz Mostert share the position with his co-driver Nathan Morcom, racing the new DPO Focus RS. Pearson’s other half Bates is fourth, while Iain and Grant Sherrin share fifth outright in their powerful BMW M4. In the class standings, Daniel and Wayne Clift currently lead the way in A2, while Scott Gore sits on top in B1. Troy Williams is first in B2, while teammates — not co-drivers — Colin Osborne and Tyler Everingham share the lead in C class.

The Australian Production Car Series will enter its penultimate round of the season this weekend, featuring two endurance races at the Island.

EXOTIC

BATTLE This weekend’s round of the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series will be crucial for all competitors, as they head into the penultimate race weekend for the season.

A bigger field of Challenge Modern has seen more competitive racing in the class, with Mark Griffith currently leading Scott Hookey for class victory.

Steve McLaughlan is currently looking like the man to beat, who currently holds a 101-point lead on his nearest rival Rod Salmon.

Aaron Cameron currently leads the way in the MARC Class, after taking the lead at Queensland Raceway.

Salmon clawed some points back to the lead at the previous round at Queensland Raceway, however so did Lamborghini driver Richard Gartner, who managed to take out both victories across that weekend. Although, not all of the focus should be on the podium places, as the race for fourth place is well and truly on. Rick Mensa currently holds position four in the Trophy class, but Jan Jinadasa is keeping him on his toes a mere five points behind in fifth.

The young Queensland racer impressed on debut, winning the round and managing to be on top of the class with two rounds remaining. The CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series will be back at Phillip Island for the first time since 2016, with two 50-minute races to decide who will be on top at the end of the weekend. The final round of the series will head to Wakefield Park on 18-19 November.

Last year’s Trophy class victor Rob Smith is sixth, but could easily fight Mensa for that top four spot.

THE SHANNONS NATIONALS

SAFETY CAR

Proudly provided by McLaren Melbourne and Zagame Autosport

In 2017 the Shannons Nationals is fortunate to have a stunning McLaren 570S as the official Safety Car at all seven rounds this season, thanks to a new partnership with McLaren Melbourne and Zagame Autosport. The Nationals caught up with Zagame Autosport’s General Manager of Motorsport Cameron McConville, explaining the exclusive partnership and the car you’ll see on track this weekend leading the field. Shannons Nationals: Thanks for joining us for a chat Cam! Talk us through the partnership with McLaren Melbourne and Zagame Autosport, and why it worked to be part of the Shannons Nationals. Cameron McConville: It’s an exciting new partnership for us and it coincided with the launch of Zagame Autosport, a new start-up division of Zagame Automotive Group. We specialise in track-day cars and customer race cars, and McLaren Melbourne is one of our brands. The car is courtesy of McLaren Melbourne; we are the only McLaren dealer in Victoria, based in Swan St Richmond, next to all of our other high-end sports car dealerships. It’s great to have McLaren on board and supplying the car. It’s a good fit for us and to launch Zagame Autosport. SN: Tell us about the Shannons Nationals McLaren Safety Car. CM: This car you’ll see right throughout the Shannons Nationals is the McLaren 570S Coupe, it’s a 3.8-litre, twin-turbo mid-mounted V8 engine. It’s the lightest and probably the most powerful sports car in its class. It’s

It’s a real drivers’ car, and I think that anyone that gets into a McLaren—or is fortunate enough to get in a McLaren and have a drive—will see it’s a very exhilarating drivers’ car. SN: Why the McLaren 570S? CM: It seemed like a really good fit with the new McLaren 570S GT4 coming out this year, and we’re the official McLaren Motorsport dealer for Australasia, so we thought we couldn’t have a GT4 race car as the Safety Car. The 570S is very similar and the new GT4 is derived from this road car.

A U T O S P O R T The Zagame Automotive Group has continued to grow its passion for things that move and over the past 15 years the company has become the leading dealer of sport, exotic and prestige brands in Victoria. Housing some of the world’s most premium marques, racing pedigree is in their DNA and the development of Zagame Autosport was inevitable. Headed up by a team of over 30 year’s motor sport experience, Zagame Autosport offers clients access to the world of racing.

At McLaren, an unswerving commitment to excellence and innovation underpins everything they do; from the performance of the Formula 1 team on race day to the ownership experience they offer with their range of sports car. McLaren Melbourne, now located in Richmond Victoria, has joined with the Zagame Automotive Group as their local McLaren retailer. Their aim is to deliver what McLaren Automotive’s engineers planned from the outset; a range of sports cars that would be a pleasure to own as well as drive.

SN: Zagame Autosport is very well represented at Shannons Nationals events this year, but not just with the Safety Car. What drivers and cars are Zagame running this season?

CM: At the moment we have four categories, five cars and hopefully in the back-end of the year a couple of GT4 cars as well.

This year has also seen more new-generation Supercars, making the series more competitive than ever. Not only has the category become a happy home for many ‘de-registered’ Supercars, but it’s also attracted a range of historically significant racecars that fans identify with from their various successes in the hands of the sport’s great drivers and teams. The Kumho Series has also become the perfect category for young drivers looking to learn the unique five-litre, rear-wheel-drive, 600-horsepower beasts ahead of possibly advancing their careers into Supercars.

CAMS AUSTRALIAN GT TROPHY SERIES

PRESENTED BY PIRELLI The Australian GT Trophy presented by Pirelli is a relatively new racing formula in the Australian motor sport landscape, beginning in 2016. The popular addition provided a number of key benefits for Australian GT, as for competitors, it added value to their machines as the competition gave them a dedicated home within the Australian motor sport landscape. The older generation machinery also presents a lower entry point into the most exciting form of racing in the country, and the perfect place for drivers to gain experience before stepping into the Australian GT Championship. Also welcomed into the Trophy Series are entries from MARC Cars Australia, which enjoy their own dedicated class within the field. The Trophy Series shares much in common with the Australian GT Championship, including compulsory pit stops, designed to balance out the racing to its longer 50-minute races.

The Australian Production Car Series returns to the Shannons Nationals for the fourth time this season, as they line-up for their penultimate round for 2017 at Phillip Island. The series sees drivers compete in ‘daily drives’, racing cars that can be purchased in the domestic automobile market. Featuring six different classes, all sorts of vehicles are catered for from high-performance to hybrid racers. In 2017 the Australian Production cars have opened up to 3E production car regulations, making more cars eligible for the series— including two-seater production sports cars and utes. Also new for the season is the Australian Production Car Cup, which will crown the outright and class winners from rounds one to six. The new prize will sit alongside the existing Australian Production Car Series Trophy, which will benefit the new 3E cars that were unable to compete in the opening round at Bathurst. The Australian Production Car Series Trophy will award the outright and class winners from rounds two to five.

2017 CALENDAR Round 1: 14-16 April, Mt. Panorama Round 2: 9-11 June, Winton Round 3: 7-9 July, Sydney Motorsport Park Round 4: 4-6 August, Queensland Raceway Round 5: 8-10 September, Phillip Island Round 6: 18-19 November, Wakefield Park

AUSTRALIAN PROTOTYPE SERIES

WWW.PROTOTYPESERIES.COM.AU The Australian Prototype Series heads to Queensland Raceway for their penultimate round in 2017. Evolving from the former Australian Sports Racer Series, the Australian Prototype Series caters for open-top and LeMansstyle sports cars in Australia. A three-class structure caters for all existing eligible vehicles, while international specification ‘CN Prototype’ cars will become eligible for the first time and will compete alongside the Sports Racers, enabling a broader eligibility list that will open the series up to more cars than ever before. After three rounds, Radical racer Philip Hughes leads Mark Laucke and Terry Peovitis outright, while also leading the Radical/Supersport Trophy class. John-Paul Drake is on top in the newly introduced Kumho Cup Class, while Terry Peovitis leads the FL1 Trophy in his F1000.

PIARC WELCOMES RACE FANS Welcome to this weekend’s Shannons Nationals Round 6 for 2017, which brings to a conclusion the 12th year of the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club’s partnership with the Nationals. This weekend’s event is promoted and organised by PIARC and we wish you a warm welcome to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, which we like to be known as Australia’s most picturesque racing circuit and as always is beautifully presented by the circuit owners the Linfox Group via the Phillip Island Operations P/L management and staff. The Nationals gives us the opportunity to showcase many national categories on this historically significant world-class race circuit, which this year celebrates its 65th of top class racing. In 2017 PIARC also celebrate 29 rounds of the Nationals, since its inception in 2006, keeping race fans entertained with varied programs and great racing. This meeting is the other end of the spectrum from May’s traditionally longer endurance focused races. This weekend brings a great mixture of short, sharp sprint races, one-endurance event with the Australian Production Car Series 4 Hour, two shorter 50-minute mini endurance races for the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series. Three other exciting categories including Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, Kumho V8 Touring Car Series and the Australian Prototype Series will also be on the schedule, bringing the traditional non-stop action. All of the marshals here today are volunteers who are trained by the sport for their various roles, and the majority of them are our own PIARC members. The remainder come from other dedicated groups who lend their specialities to what we are doing.

These extend to services such as medical, fire, flags, timing and scrutiny. We work in close cooperation with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) and with their support and involvement, we have a licencing and training program for marshals at all the circuits in Australia. This provides a consistent high level of skills and application of rules and procedures at CAMS events – a standard that is widely recognised around the world. If you are interested in more involvement as an enthusiast, spectator or maybe an official or driver, have a look at our PIARC website at piarc.com.au. You will find information and application forms for our various motoring based activities and ways you can join us in this exciting and demanding past time we call motor sport. Through us, you can also gain access to motor sport including other events here at Phillip Island such as Supercars races, international motorcycle races, various national, state and club based race car series, as well as the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. We look forward to seeing you again here at the circuit later in the year or at our clubrooms at the Moorabbin Airport, where we enjoy our club life and social life away from the track at the Flight Deck Bar and Grill. To finish off 2017 on a high note at Phillip Island, we have the very traditional Island Magic Race Meeting on 25-26 November. This will have all its usual iconic events plus as an added bonus of the 2016 Saloon Car Nationals Crown with an expected 50 plus Holden and Fords battling it for the number one crown. Geoff Bull President, PIARC
