14 Australian GT Trophy Series

On behalf of the CAMS National Racing Championships Board of Directors and staff, welcome to the final round of the Shannons Nationals for 2017.

This season has hosted fantastic racing throughout the year. From the 100th round celebrations to rising motor sport stars, we’ve seen it all in 2017.

16 Circuit Excel Nationals

This weekend we make our final stop at Wakefield Park, as we return to the Goulburn circuit for the first time in two years.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our dedicated volunteers and officials who have worked tirelessly for the benefit of our sport and the Shannons Nationals. We commend the effort you put in day in and day out.

Over two days of racing we will see two national series winners crowned, in both the Australian Production Car Series and the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series. Bob Pearson currently leads the Production Car field, however Iain and Grant Sherrin are knocking on the door for the outright win. Be sure to also keep an eye out for the class battles throughout the field.

It is the end of the season and because of that, any reputable publication begins rolling out their ‘best of 2017’ lists… we are no different.

There have been plenty of remarkable performances throughout the course of the 2017 Shannons Nationals season, so we figured it was time to look through the star performers of the season.

The criteria for selection was incredibly broad – if a driver made an impact at some point throughout the year they would automatically be in contention. We looked at who they were racing, how they achieved their results and went from there. We also tried to share the love amongst the core group of categories that have supported each round. We also thought that two people with 100-plus Shannons Nationals rounds experience each would probably have a bit of an idea about what they were talking about, so we roped in Garry O’Brien and Richard Craill to do the job. Obviously, we can’t mention all of the outstanding performances here. If you’d like to contribute, jump on to the Shannons Nationals social media channels and let us know who you thought stood out during the crazy year that was 2017. T H E N AT I O N A L S . C O M . JORDAN LOVE Not only did he dominate the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia season, Jordan Love then backed up his form in the Shannons Nationals’ Porsche category with strong pace in the ‘main game’ of Carrera Cup once the GT3CC season was finished. Jordan’s progression – and that of his main rival this year, Brenton Grove – is proof of concept that the Porsche pyramid system in Australia works a treat. Honourable mentions: Anthony Gilbertson for his incredible pole position – the first for an Elite driver and Sam Shahin for becoming the first Elite racer to win a round at Sandown.

BOB PEARSON Bob earned his place on this list. We’re not sure if it was because the spectacle-wearing Sydneysider dominated the middle stanza of this year’s Australian Production Car Series or because he did a shoey on the podium in Sydney after winning all four races. The longevity of both driver and car were critical to his strong mid-season form and some very impressive victories. Honourable mentions: Tyler Everingham graduated from open-wheelers this year and at some points had his class car in outright contention. Shout out to the Sherrins too, for finally getting the M4 over the line after several close calls from the fastest car on the grid.

MARK LAUCKE Following an indifferent start to the season, the former national racing champion surged in the second half of the Australian Prototype Series this year.

wet and capitalising on the pace of the West in the dry. The South Australian was a very worthy champion in the series’ inaugural season.

A strong weekend in Sydney projected him into the title fight, then Queensland Raceway put him in the box seat. Scoring points when the Radicals were dominant in the

Honourable mentions: In his aging Radical, Philip Hughes was mighty this year and his wet-weather performances in particular shone.

ROD SALMON, RICHARD GARTNER AND STEVE MCLAUGHLAN We’ve cheated here because it’s hard to split this CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series trio. Gartner struggled at the start of the season but stormed to strong victories in the middle of the year in his yellow Lambo. Rod Salmon had searing speed in the Skwirk Audi and showed again why he’s a two-time 12 Hour winner.

THE RACES

McLaughlan was ultra-consistent in the JAMEC-Pem Audi and was always a contender and in GT racing – is never easy. Honourable mentions: Wayne Mack’s consistency has him fourth in points going into the finale and within sight of the title podium.

With so much great motor sport throughout the year it’s hard to single out one or two memorable races, but we’ve had a go.

The annual ‘Fight in the Night’ is always a blinder and if the race doesn’t live up to expectations the spectacle takes point.

Sandown’s opening round was a tale of two days – super on Saturday and sopping on Sunday. The wet-weather antics of the Formula 4 drivers in the rain were impressive.

Likewise, the Porsches at Phillip Island are always ‘a good thing’ and the Sunday Carrera Cup race, in changeable conditions, was completely unpredictable and dramatic.

At Winton the Australian Prototype Series put on three absolute blinders, but it was perhaps the second of three races that was the peak, with a seven-car freight train for the lead and more passing than a MotoGP race. Jason Makris’ last-lap pass for the lead was spectacular too.

Cup Challenge was solid that weekend too, with comefrom-behind victories the story of the day.

Winton also turned it on with the GTs, with a particularly dramatic last few laps on one race that saw Salmon end up in the bunker and McLaughlan run down Matt Stoupas in the closing stages.

However perhaps the biggest surprise was the second race of the Prototype series at Sandown. Word is, Peter Paddon is still waiting on an answer from police about how Philip Hughes thieved a last-corner victory in the rain that day

ADVERTORIAL

FUELLING THE FIRE

It might not be a sexy subject, but one Aussie company is proudly making the racing wheels go around thanks to a fire for all things fuel. Wo r d s : R i c h ar d Crai l l

I mage s: Ra ce Fue ls A rchiv e

“Fuel,” says Mark Tierney, a director of Melbournebased motor sport staple Race Fuels, “Is not a sexy part of going motor racing.” And that’s probably the truth. Despite distributing the product that quite literally makes the internalcombustion wheels go round, it’s hard to get people excited about their racing fuels. You put it in the tank and it makes the car go: as a consumable, it doesn’t change the outcome of a race for a spectator in the same way, say, a soft tyre does when compared to a hard. To most, it’s just a usable commodity that costs more money the higher the Octane number is. Naturally Tierney, a long time racer who now helms a business that distributes nearly one million litres of fuel around every state in Australia per year, doesn’t share that opinion. Race Fuels was founded in 2003 and started distributing ELF racing fuels and products in Melbourne and Tasmania.

10

|

TH E R A C I NG M AGA ZI NE

“It started with me dropping a few drums down to Sandown or Phillip Island in the back of a BA Falcon Ute – we later added a box trailer – on Friday morning and then we were done for the weekend,” Tierney remembers. Today the business is the primary supplier of fuel to the V8 Supercars, Shannons Nationals, Australian GT, Bathurst’s 12 and 6 Hour races and a host of other events. It makes for a busier schedule than days gone by. “Across the year we would be supplying product to several hundred people each weekend, and that’s before you take into account needing to deliver product to V8 Supercars and the Shannons Nationals. They all operate very professionally and expect a level of service that’s a bit more than dropping off the fuel drum and saying ‘seeya’. “The business is as much about providing that service and support to teams and drivers as it is actually pumping fuel at race tracks.”

The Race Fuels organisation is certainly larger than a Ford Ute and a trailer these days.

could go racing without the procedures and standards companies like Race Fuels provide.

An enormous B-Double transporter carries the fuel across the country with multiple staff on hand to ensure the product is properly and promptly distributed at each round. RaceFuels does not request pre-bookings, they believe it is their role to carry enough to cover all contingencies.

Sean Scott, RaceFuels’ operations manager, has a full time job preparing the compliance paperwork ahead of a race meeting.

“We have four types of fuel that we supply and we carry enough of each to make sure everyone that’s going to be at the race meeting is catered for, but we try to do more than that too,” Tierney explains. “At a lot of events like the Kumho V8 rounds, for instance, they’re only allowed to have 60 litres of fuel in the garage at a time so part of it is making sure that everyone is re-supplied across the weekend. We go to them instead of them coming to us so that customer service side of things is very important. “It’s a logistical challenge to say the least, the start of the year in particular. “We even go to the test days and spend a lot of time predicting who is testing where so we can plan our supply. It is not uncommon for RaceFuels to attend multiple circuits on the same day”. But wait, there’s more. In this day and age when you need to sign a waiver before you go to the bathroom, there’s a significant safety effort around the Race Fuels business to the point where it’s unlikely people

“It’s a fact of life that the events wouldn’t get a permit unless they had a fuel management plan in place,” Tierney says. “There’s so many regulations and OH&S issues surrounding the control of dangerous goods in quantities that it’s not feasible for people to bring their own fuel to the track, especially at major events, any more. You just wouldn’t get a permit, so our role is to take that issue out of the equation and make sure it’s safe and we’re conscious of taking away everything we bring in.” Hailing from a passionate racing family, Tierney believes it’s critical that the enjoyment of the sport has to be number one in operating the business. “I think you have to be very fond of it to be involved at the level we are,” he says. “We try and go above and beyond to help people out. We’ve had several Melbourne teams without space in their transporter come to us and go ‘hey, could you take a drum back to Melbourne for us?’ and we’ll do it and drop it at their workshop. It’s no problem. “It’s all part of what we do and hopefully it’s making it better for everyone. We certainly get a buzz out of it.”

Q&A

WITH THE CIRCUIT EXCEL

Shannons Nationals caught up with Andrew Young, the organiser behind the growing Circuit Excel Nationals. Shannons Nationals: Before we get on track, who are some of the key competitors vying for the title?

Current series leader in Adam Bryant will be the big hope for New South Wales, which is Bryant’s home circuit.

Andrew Young: From South Australia, current State Champion Asher Johnston will be keen to improve on his third place the 2016 Nationals.

SN: What does it mean for the Excel Nationals to race on the Shannons Nationals program?

Also from SA and one to watch is Shaun Pannowitch, who was the inaugural Circuit Excel state Champion in SA and is always a front-runner. Great competition from Queensland will be in the form of Cam Wilson, who will be defending his crown from the inaugural 2016 Nationals. He will closely followed by Cam Barthomlew who has second in the 2016 Nationals and is the 2016 Excel state champion. Also, do not underestimate Brock Giblin. From Victoria 15-year-old young gun Jaylyn Robotham is one to watch. Robotham is the current series leader in South Australia and is at the front end of the Victorian series. His teammate in Ash Wright will also be at the pointy-end of the front pack.

12

|

T H E R A C I NG M AGA ZI NE

AY: This will be the second time Circuit Excel has been involved with Shannons Nationals, following the Queensland state round at Ipswich. For the Nationals it gives a greater awareness of the event and a legitimacy of the Circuit Excel Nationals in the future. It also shows that we are amongst one of the most recognised categories under the CAMS banner. SN: Why have the Circuit Excels grown so fast, on not only the grassroots scene, but Australia wide? AY: Four words: Entry level, affordable racing. A do-ityourself setup, a car can be put together for around $5,000. Otherwise the car with the help of others costs around $10,000. Even compared to karts this still a cheaper way to go racing. For what they are the cars are generally pretty reliable and are easy to fix when something does go wrong.

N AT I O N A L S You can buy and entire running street-car for around $500, which gives you the start of a race car or a set of full spares. There’s also great atmosphere amongst the competitors and everyone’s really friendly. You see competitors on race days helping out each other to keep everyone on the track. SN: When and where did Excel racing begin? AY: It had its origins in both Queensland and South Australia. Both states were the first to run races under CAMS events kicking off around 2012. We now have around 250 Circuit Excel cars log booked and growing. SN: Who was last year's National Excel winner? AY: Cam Wilson and he will be sporting the number 1 on his car for the 2017 Nationals. SN: What can we look out for over the weekend? AY: This year we will have actually have a Grandfather and Grandson team competing from the Bargwana family. Harry and Ben Bargwana will be racing and I am sure Jason will be keeping a close eye on both… it’s great to have three generations involved.

The series was first introduced in 2016, which has proved to be a popular addition to both the Shannons Nationals and the Australian GT chain. For competitors, it has added value to their machines as the competition gave them a dedicated home within the Australian motor sport landscape.

The Trophy Series shares much in common with the Australian GT Championship, including compulsory pit stops that are designed to balance out the racing to its longer 50-minute races.

The Australian Production Car Series returns to the Shannons Nationals for the fourth time this season, as they line-up for their penultimate round for 2017 at Phillip Island. The series sees drivers compete in ‘daily drives’, racing cars that can be purchased in the domestic automobile market. Featuring six different classes, all sorts of vehicles are catered for from high-performance to hybrid racers. In 2017 the Australian Production cars have opened up to 3E production car regulations, making more cars eligible for the series— including two-seater production sports cars and utes. Also new for the season is the Australian Production Car Cup, which will crown the outright and class winners from rounds one to six. The new prize will sit alongside the existing Australian Production Car Series Trophy, which will benefit the new 3E cars that were unable to compete in the opening round at Bathurst. The Australian Production Car Series Trophy will award the outright and class winners from rounds two to five.

2017 CALENDAR Round 1: 14-16 April, Mt. Panorama Round 2: 9-11 June, Winton Round 3: 7-9 July, Sydney Motorsport Park Round 4: 4-6 August, Queensland Raceway Round 5: 8-10 September, Phillip Island Round 6: 18-19 November, Wakefield Park
