PHILLIP ISLAND IN THIS ISSUE

Geoff Bull President, PIARC

3 Welcome to Phillip Island Welcome to the Shannons Nationals Round 3 for 2018 - the 13th year of the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club's (PIARC’s) partnership with the Nationals that began in 2006. This weekend’s event is organised by PIARC, who would like to wish you a warm welcome to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit – one of Australia’s most picturesque racing circuits. Round 3 of the Shannons Nationals is not only the 30th round at this circuit, but also forms part of Phillip Island’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations. Motor sport has played an integral part in the Island's rich history, dating back to the first Australian Grand Prix, held on the Island’s public roads in 1928.

All of the marshals here today are volunteers who are trained by the sport for their various roles, and the majority of them are our own PIARC members. The remainder come from other dedicated groups who lend their specialities to what we are doing. These extend to services such as Medical, Fire, Flags, Timing and Scrutiny. We work in close cooperation with CAMS and with their support and involvement, we have a licensing and training program for marshals at all the circuits in Australia. This provides for a consistently high level of skills and application of rules and procedures at CAMS events; a standard that is widely recognised around the world.

If you are interested in getting more involved in motor sport, as an enthusiast, official or driver, visit cams.com.au or piarc.com. au.There you will find information on how This meeting traditionally has longer endurance focused races for Australian GTs you can join us in this exciting past-time we with a 101 lap, 500-kilometre race as part of call motor sport. the CAMS Australian GT Championship. Ten years on from its foundation, the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia continues to deliver some of Australia’s best racing – especially if you’re a fan of Porsche’s GT3 Cup car. The series has come a long way since the opening round on 17 May 2008, but still delivers on most of the KPIs that it set out to achieve back when it was created by a couple of enthusiasts, along with the support of Porsche Cars Australia. The series was created to provide a ‘place to race’ for owners of Cup Cars – for those who either couldn’t race in Carrera Cup or didn’t want to race against more powerful GT cars.

4 // TH E R A C I NG M AGA ZI NE

Perhaps more importantly, it was designed to be affordable and great fun – with the social aspect off-track almost as key as what was happening on it. The inaugural title was won by Victorian Sven Burchartz, a Melbourne-based Lawyer with a strong history of success in club level racing and the year before in Australian GT. Gradually the series evolved. Matt Kingsley in 2009 was the first driver to attack the series as a true alternative to another national-level category. The attention he gained, thanks to blinding speed and remarkable wet-weather prowess, helped project him into Carrera Cup and other racing opportunities.

A R S

Roger Lago epitomised the Pro-Am aspect of the category as he went back-to-back in 2010 and 2011, while Kane Rose’s title a year later was the first when a proper, young-gun used the category as a way to try and build onto bigger things. With some prompting from Porsche stalwart John Morriss, Richard Muscat’s attack a year later – which would result in a series win – would push the young Victorian into bigger things, including Supercars endurance racing and overseas opportunities. By 2014, the series had evolved into something with split personality, with young stars at the front plying their trade and those doing it for fun for a good weekend

O F

away or a slightly more serious pursuit just behind them. Success by the likes of Geoff Emery, John Goodacre, Tim Miles and more recently Anthony Gilbertson, was proof that the series remained true to its roots. At the front, the young-guns continued to come with Matt Campbell’s Class B victory in 2014 (the same year Fraser Ross won the outright title) which quickly followed by an outright drive in the final round that saw him demolish the field and prove his credentials for a forthcoming campaign in Carrera Cup. Those credentials, as we now know, did not really need proving.

T H E N AT I O N A L S . C O M . AU // 5

Hamish Hardeman won the outright title in 2016, delivering Sonic back-to-back titles following the remarkable Ryan Simpson’s efforts one year prior.

trophy at Sandown earlier this year, to a near-rapturous applause from the entire paddock, was proof the enjoyment factor remains the driving force behind the series.

It would be three in a row thanks to Jordan Love in 2017; a result that saw him nominated as a Michelin Junior for Carrera Cup this year and is certainly a future star.

The Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia has evolved over the last decade. Drivers, teams and cars have come and gone and the 179 races since have delivered the same mixture of joy, delight, entertainment, disappointment and despair that any other series has.

In 2018 the series has been even better, with a host of young rising stars tabbed by majority of the professional teams in Porsche Carrera Cup. It’s become just what the Super2 Series is to the Supercars Championship, which is a legitimate pathway through to the big leagues and potentially onwards. And yet the smile on Ross McGregor’s face as he accepted his first ever Pro-Am class

6 // TH E R AC I NG M AGA ZI NE

The GT3 Cup Challenge though has done it via its continued evolution and by changing to suit the market conditions... but most of all, it’s made it to a decade by being great fun – which is perhaps the biggest positive of all.

ADVERTORIAL

FUELLING THE FIRE It might not be a sexy subject, but one Aussie company is proudly making the racing wheels go around thanks to a fire for all things fuel. Wor d s : R i c h ar d Crai l l

I mage s: Ra ce Fue ls A rchiv e

“Fuel,” says Mark Tierney, a director of Melbournebased motor sport staple Race Fuels, “Is not a sexy part of going motor racing.”

Ute – we later added a box trailer – on Friday morning and then we were done for the weekend,” Tierney remembers.

And that’s probably the truth. Despite distributing the product that quite literally makes the internalcombustion wheels go round, it’s hard to get people excited about their racing fuels.

Today the business is the primary supplier of fuel to the V8 Supercars, Shannons Nationals, Australian GT, Bathurst’s 12 and 6 Hour races and a host of other events. It makes for a busier schedule than days gone by.

You put it in the tank and it makes the car go: as a consumable, it doesn’t change the outcome of a race for a spectator in the same way, say, a soft tyre does when compared to a hard. To most, it’s just a usable commodity that costs more money the higher the Octane number is. Naturally Tierney, a long time racer who now helms a business that distributes nearly one million litres of fuel around every state in Australia per year, doesn’t share that opinion. Race Fuels was founded in 2003 and started distributing ELF racing fuels and products in Melbourne and Tasmania. “It started with me dropping a few drums down to Sandown or Phillip Island in the back of a BA Falcon

1 0 // T H E R A C I NG M AG AZI NE

“Across the year we would be supplying product to several hundred people each weekend, and that’s before you take into account needing to deliver product to V8 Supercars and the Shannons Nationals. They all operate very professionally and expect a level of service that’s a bit more than dropping off the fuel drum and saying ‘seeya’. “The business is as much about providing that service and support to teams and drivers as it is actually pumping fuel at race tracks.” The Race Fuels organisation is certainly larger than a Ford Ute and a trailer these days. An enormous B-Double transporter carries the fuel across the country with multiple staff on hand to ensure

the product is properly and promptly distributed at each round. RaceFuels does not request pre-bookings, they believe it is their role to carry enough to cover all contingencies. “We have four types of fuel that we supply and we carry enough of each to make sure everyone that’s going to be at the race meeting is catered for, but we try to do more than that too,” Tierney explains. “At a lot of events like the Kumho V8 rounds, for instance, they’re only allowed to have 60 litres of fuel in the garage at a time so part of it is making sure that everyone is re-supplied across the weekend. We go to them instead of them coming to us so that customer service side of things is very important.

“It’s a fact of life that the events wouldn’t get a permit unless they had a fuel management plan in place,” Tierney says. “There’s so many regulations and OH&S issues surrounding the control of dangerous goods in quantities that it’s not feasible for people to bring their own fuel to the track, especially at major events, any more. You just wouldn’t get a permit, so our role is to take that issue out of the equation and make sure it’s safe and we’re conscious of taking away everything we bring in.” Hailing from a passionate racing family, Tierney believes it’s critical that the enjoyment of the sport has to be number one in operating the business.

“It’s a logistical challenge to say the least, the start of the year in particular.

“I think you have to be very fond of it to be involved at the level we are,” he says.

“We even go to the test days and spend a lot of time predicting who is testing where so we can plan our supply. It is not uncommon for RaceFuels to attend multiple circuits on the same day”.

“We try and go above and beyond to help people out. We’ve had several Melbourne teams without space in their transporter come to us and go ‘hey, could you take a drum back to Melbourne for us?’ and we’ll do it and drop it at their workshop. It’s no problem.

But wait, there’s more. In this day and age when you need to sign a waiver before you go to the bathroom, there’s a significant safety effort around the Race Fuels business to the point where it’s unlikely people could go racing without the procedures and standards companies like Race Fuels provide.

“It’s all part of what we do and hopefully it’s making it better for everyone. We certainly get a buzz out of it.”

Sean Scott, RaceFuels’ operations manager, has a full time job preparing the compliance paperwork ahead of a race meeting.
