WELCOME TO

ROUND 5

WINTON IN THIS ISSUE

Michael Smith Shannons Nationals Director

3 Welcome to Winton On behalf of the CAMS National Racing Championships, welcome to the penultimate round of the Shannons Nationals for 2018. Back from our previous round at Queensland Raceway, we are excited to return to rural Victoria this weekend and race at Winton Motor Raceway, with entry free for all spectators across the event. Round 5 features a strong line-up of categories, with some of Australia's best championships and series joining us this weekend. At every round in 2018 we have the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia feature amongst our great line-up of categories, with the series producing some fantastic and close racing this season. This weekend will be the final round of the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy in Porsche GT3 Cup, with Cooper Murray in the box seat to take the prize. The fifth round of the Nationals will also host the final round of the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series, with the battle to go down to the wire with a bundle of drivers in contention to take out the title. The CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will be hosting two rounds in one weekend at Winton, with this format to

be a treat for the young and aspiring openwheel drivers in the championship. Coming into their third round for 2018 will be the Australian Production Car Series, which will run two timed races over the weekend, while the local Porsche 944 category will be a great undercard for the event. This weekend spectators and competitors can also try their hand at drifting, with Drift Cadet here across the weekend to offer their drifting training and hot laps. We are also thankful for the continued support from Shannons Insurance, who join us for the 12th year as our naming-rights partner. Shannons have been an amazing long-time supporter of motor sport and we are delighted to work with them again this year in what promises to be another fantastic season. Finally, a big thank you goes out to our dedicated CAMS officials, who work day-in and day-out to make our motor racing happen.

ADVERTORIAL

FUELLING THE FIRE It might not be a sexy subject, but one Aussie company is proudly making the racing wheels go around thanks to a fire for all things fuel. Wor d s : R i c h ar d Crai l l

I mage s: Ra ce Fue ls A rchiv e

“Fuel,” says Mark Tierney, a director of Melbournebased motor sport staple Race Fuels, “Is not a sexy part of going motor racing.”

Ute – we later added a box trailer – on Friday morning and then we were done for the weekend,” Tierney remembers.

And that’s probably the truth. Despite distributing the product that quite literally makes the internalcombustion wheels go round, it’s hard to get people excited about their racing fuels.

Today the business is the primary supplier of fuel to the V8 Supercars, Shannons Nationals, Australian GT, Bathurst’s 12 and 6 Hour races and a host of other events. It makes for a busier schedule than days gone by.

You put it in the tank and it makes the car go: as a consumable, it doesn’t change the outcome of a race for a spectator in the same way, say, a soft tyre does when compared to a hard. To most, it’s just a usable commodity that costs more money the higher the Octane number is. Naturally Tierney, a long time racer who now helms a business that distributes nearly one million litres of fuel around every state in Australia per year, doesn’t share that opinion. Race Fuels was founded in 2003 and started distributing ELF racing fuels and products in Melbourne and Tasmania. “It started with me dropping a few drums down to Sandown or Phillip Island in the back of a BA Falcon

8 // T H E R AC I NG M AGA ZI NE

“Across the year we would be supplying product to several hundred people each weekend, and that’s before you take into account needing to deliver product to V8 Supercars and the Shannons Nationals. They all operate very professionally and expect a level of service that’s a bit more than dropping off the fuel drum and saying ‘seeya’. “The business is as much about providing that service and support to teams and drivers as it is actually pumping fuel at race tracks.” The Race Fuels organisation is certainly larger than a Ford Ute and a trailer these days. An enormous B-Double transporter carries the fuel across the country with multiple staff on hand to ensure

the product is properly and promptly distributed at each round. RaceFuels does not request pre-bookings, they believe it is their role to carry enough to cover all contingencies. “We have four types of fuel that we supply and we carry enough of each to make sure everyone that’s going to be at the race meeting is catered for, but we try to do more than that too,” Tierney explains. “At a lot of events like the Kumho V8 rounds, for instance, they’re only allowed to have 60 litres of fuel in the garage at a time so part of it is making sure that everyone is re-supplied across the weekend. We go to them instead of them coming to us so that customer service side of things is very important.

“It’s a fact of life that the events wouldn’t get a permit unless they had a fuel management plan in place,” Tierney says. “There’s so many regulations and OH&S issues surrounding the control of dangerous goods in quantities that it’s not feasible for people to bring their own fuel to the track, especially at major events, any more. You just wouldn’t get a permit, so our role is to take that issue out of the equation and make sure it’s safe and we’re conscious of taking away everything we bring in.” Hailing from a passionate racing family, Tierney believes it’s critical that the enjoyment of the sport has to be number one in operating the business.

“It’s a logistical challenge to say the least, the start of the year in particular.

“I think you have to be very fond of it to be involved at the level we are,” he says.

“We even go to the test days and spend a lot of time predicting who is testing where so we can plan our supply. It is not uncommon for RaceFuels to attend multiple circuits on the same day”.

“We try and go above and beyond to help people out. We’ve had several Melbourne teams without space in their transporter come to us and go ‘hey, could you take a drum back to Melbourne for us?’ and we’ll do it and drop it at their workshop. It’s no problem.

But wait, there’s more. In this day and age when you need to sign a waiver before you go to the bathroom, there’s a significant safety effort around the Race Fuels business to the point where it’s unlikely people could go racing without the procedures and standards companies like Race Fuels provide.

“It’s all part of what we do and hopefully it’s making it better for everyone. We certainly get a buzz out of it.”

Sean Scott, RaceFuels’ operations manager, has a full time job preparing the compliance paperwork ahead of a race meeting.

DRIFTING FEATURES AT WINTON As part of this weekend's penultimate round of the Shannons Nationals at Winton, drifting school 'Drift Cadet' will host a class and demonstrations for spectators and competitors at the event. The Nationals caught up with Peter Pham from the drift programme to learn more about how competitors and spectators can get involved with the drifting and hot laps on Sunday. Shannons Nationals: What is Drift Cadet? Peter Pham: We are a Melbourne-based drift school and drift demonstration team, created to grow the sport of drifting by giving the general public a chance to try it out without the big financial costs involved of owning and maintaining a drift car. Drivers who are serious about getting into drifting car fast-track their learning by going through our course. Because the cars are set up and we have pro drifters as instructors, we can give you tips to improve your driving quickly. Personally, it took me years to learn the basics because my car wasn't set up properly and I had to learn by trial and error. With the program providing drift demonstrations and hot laps at other events, it grows the awareness of drifting and how it's done properly. Drifting isn't burnouts or corner-exit power-sliding.

SN: What can circuit racers expect when they drive a drift car? PP: One of the biggest misconceptions is that drift cars don't like grip in the rear or dislike a wet track. National and international level drift cars compete on semi-slick competition tyres, so a circuit racer would definitely notice that. Circuit racers would also notice that you steer the car with the accelerator and that there is minimal steering work. We encourage the drivers and general pubic to come on over on Sunday to say hi and experience drifting for themselves.

SN: How can people get involved? PP: We currently have two programmes running at Winton. Drift School - $599 This is catered for people who don't own a RWD car and want to try drifting. We supply everything required for the course, including a drift car, an instructor, tyres, licence and also refreshments. Drift Practice - $249 This is for people who own a RWD car and want to give drifting a go or have practice, who'd like to develop their car control skills.
