Horsham gripped by World Cup fever Summer has officially arrived, and here in Horsham it’s set to be an incredible June. It all kicks off this weekend with Kidz Stuff (more on P6), and other highlights of the month include the opening of Wabi, the completion of a revamped East Street, the Midnight Walk, and the Great British Circus’ arrival. Then there’s the small matter of the World Cup! Truth be told, we can’t help feeling that we - as a nation aren’t building our hopes up to quite the extent seen in the past. It’s not surprising that all those penalty shoot out defeats have dampened our expectations! But while we may all acknowledge that we’re probably not going to win it, as we’re somewhere between the fifth and eighth best team, we’re still going to be mightily depressed when England crash out. On penalties. To Germany. With a week to go until England play USA, the flags are flying from bedroom and office windows, and even out of cars,
although most of those bought already will have broken before a ball is even kicked! Pubs are gearing up for a bumper month, willing England to go all the way while realising that they might need to buy a few new tables by mid-July. The Bear in Market Square has already got its England banner out, while The Queens Head, under new ownership, has always been a football pub at heart and has four big screens to show the games. In the run up to the World Cup, the Lynd Cross (by The Shelley Fountain) will be serving five wines from World Cup winning countries - the surprise being that there’s no French wine on the guest list, but there is a Brazilian wine, while The Bedford is another pub showing matches on the big screen (see advert on P15) The Lintot in Southwater will be showing the whole tournament upstairs and downstairs with three flat screens, a smoking area in the upstairs balcony, Continued on Page 14...

Alistair McEwan with his 1992 Ducati
Luca Di Marino will soon begin restoring this Ducati, which he hopes he’ll be able to keep for himself.
It’s Great to be Italian Garages like Motori Di Marino in West Chiltington aren’t supposed to exist anymore. Run by Pietro Di Marino, with a little help from his son Luca, among others, the garage is dedicated to the loving restoration of Italian motorcycles such as Ducati, Piaggio, Moto Guzzi and Aprilia. You don’t come across many garages like this, but thanks to its devoted customers, built up over 30 years, Motori di Marino remains in fine tune. It’s as much a museum as a garage. The walls and shelves are cluttered by old oil cans and signs, including one simply stating ‘It’s great to be Italian’. In one warehouse, there are boxes upon boxes of nuts, bolts, washers, lights, brakes, exhausts, seats, everything you’ll ever need to build a bike. In one warehouse about 50 old engines are lined up between bikes in various states, waiting for their turn to be restored. Pietro, pictured right aboard a 1939 Moto Guzzi, said: “I’ve had some of these parts for thirty years, and they’ve never been touched. “But I know that they are there, and we have to go through these parts every day. We could not survive without them. Every day we are all still learning, there are always surprises with motorcycles.” While nothing appears to be
in order, you suspect that Pietro and his experienced team of mechanics know exactly where everything is. And it’s this knowledge that has ensured the garage has survived. Pietro said: “There is nobody else like us around. A few deal especially with Ducati or Moto Guzzi but not all Italian bikes, across all different ages. “We have bikes here from the wartime to the nineties. There are three Hailwood replicas here from 1979-82 and these are very rare. “There are a lot of bikes from the 60s to the 80s, and these are fascinating bikes as there were huge advances made in motorbikes during that time. “And our customers come from all over the country and even abroad.” Yet one of the cust o m e r s hasn’t had to travel so far. The Resident ar-
rived shortly after Ducati fan Alistair McEwan had purchased a 1992 900cc superbike. Alistair happens to live 10 yards away, across the road. He believes that you can connect more with a motorbike than with a car - a sentiment echoed by Pietro. He said: “Every bike I sell I have put my soul into. I think there is something about old bikes - people who own them have grown with them - they are part of them. I think that perhaps you do not get that with modern bikes. They have their own character.”

Beyond the call of duty It turns out that Dan Spencer has some very generous friends and family! Taking a break from serving in the Armed Forces in Afghanistan, Dan was at the Dog & Bacon pub in Horsham throughout Saturday on a charity mission. He was finishing the last 100 kilometres of a 5,700km bike ride - the rest having been completed while on duty along with three comrades. Dan was concerned that the turnout might be low, as not only was rain forecast for the day, but he’d also arranged the event on a day when many of his friends were playing in the Bradley Rooke Memorial Football Tournament. He need not have worried not only did he finish the cycle ride for Help for H e ro e s , he also raised an incredible £2,800 on the night. Dan said:
“There were many faces I hadn’t seen before, and for the comedy night the place was rammed - you couldn’t actually get in the pub! “The comedy acts were brilliant, especially John (O’Sullivan, Newsagent Provocateur, Candy Box owner, and self-confessed publicity seeker). There was one act who wasn’t even on the bill - he just showed up with a mate and had a go and he was fantastic.” The head shaving w e n t down well, es-
pe-
cially after Jon Hamblin, who himself organised a huge rugby match for Help for Heroes last summer, raised the stakes. Dan said: “Jon said ‘If you get £200 into this pint glass I’ll have my head shaved.’ We did it and he had a grade two. “Then John Tredgett chipped in and said he’d throw in another £100 to make it a grade one!” The Chameleon Club (formerly Shelley’s) also donated £1 from each entry fee on Sunday night to the cause, adding £215 and taking the total over the £3,000 mark. Dan had hoped that all three of his comrades Tony Lane, Jay Marrs and Jock Hawkins would be at the event, but they have been called up for further duty, leaving Dan, RAF colleague
Enterprising Millais team make the final
An air of excitement greeted Young Enterprise supporters as they entered the exhibition hall for the Young Enterprise Sussex County Finals held at the Chequer Mead Community Arts centre in East Grindstead. The seven finalists, all winners from the seven Sussex Young Enterprise Area Board Finals, were all displaying their goods and business plans and talking to the visitors about their experiences and expectations for the evening. They were all competing for the Best Young Enterprise Com-
pany in Sussex award for 2010 which is supported by the Sussex Branch of the Institute of Directors. The winning company was Quote Tote from Millais School. Quote Tote now go forward to represent Sussex at the Regional final in Maidstone on June 16th where they will be competing with the winners from six other counties for a place in the National Final at The Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane London in July against other regions from all over the UK.
Dan would like to thank all those that helped, especially those at The Dog & Bacon, as well as McLaren F1, Peter G Vallance, Alex Vallance, John Tredgett, Tree Surgery, Glynde Place Dance School, Top Gear, DG Photography, So To Bathe, New England Homeware, Cote, Strada, Smith and Western, Dominoes Pizza, Apache, Rookwood Golf Club, Boots, Staples, Scissor Sisters, Beauty Secrets, Blossom Florists Kevin Daglish and Doug from the Dog and Bacon to complete the ride. Dan said: “We started cycling 48kms a day on the 1st February and then were deployed to Afghanistan on a two month tour where we had to keep up the routine despite working
each day, as you would expect to. “The total distance we covered is a little over 5700kms, which is the distance from our base in Afghanistan to the Dog and Bacon Pub in Horsham. “I've been involved with events for Help for Heroes for

Venue change
Horsham Painting Group is holding an Art Exhibition at a new venue - the Normandy Centre (Masonic Hall), Denne Road, Horsham, on 18th-19th June (see events page). The group, which formerly held exhibits at the Town Hall, is made up of about 40 local amateur artists of differing abilities who all enjoy drawing and painting in a variety of styles from traditional oils and watercolours to acrylic paints, inks and mixed media. There will be approximately 200 framed pictures on display at the exhibition. Members meet every Tuesday evening during term time at the Forest School in Comptons Lane, from 7.15-9.30pm.

A brush with creativity Have you ever wondered what creative madness descends behind the closed doors of an artist’s studio? Or fancied a snoop around your local jewellery maker’s home? If so, then the Horsham Open Studios event, held on 19th27th June, is the place to be. In its sixth year, Horsham Open Studios is no ordinary art and craft exhibition. On the 19th and 20th of June esteemed local artist Alison Ingram will fling open her studio doors, giving insight into the intricacies of her artistic endeavours. A regular on the Horsham Open Studios circuit and renowned for her abstract wildlife paintings, Alison hopes to enlighten those who wish to delve deeper into the techniques involved in creating the masterpieces of the future. Alison, who was born and bred in Horsham, said: “Open Studios is an ideal opportunity to find out more about the methods I use in my work and painting in general. “Some paintings are more complex than others and at times the finished piece isn’t what I originally planned. Face to face, I can explain the evolution of each painting and the thought processes behind them. “It’s perfect for people to see artists in a relaxed, informal place where they can ask direct questions and see how artists really work. This year I will be working in my studio so visitors can see various paintings and how they develop. “It’s also a great way of meeting new people who are interested in art and potential buyers, and for exhibiting a Continued on Page 7...

The Resident heard a conversation between mothers at the end of last week concerning the Kidz Stuff festival to be held this weekend. “It’s £10 each,” said one mother. “So for me and the kids that’s £40!” It is a tough call for parents, but if you’ve yet to decide if you’re going to go, it’s worth bearing in mind that all of the events are free once you get inside. You will have to pay £3 to be involved in the world record breaking gunge or wet sponge fights, but ask anyone involved in last year’s custard pie fight and we’ll be amazed if a sin-
gle one of the 300 or so kids taking part felt it wasn’t value for money. The way we’re looking at it - and The Resident is not a promotional partner so it’s an impartial look - is if the event was free to get in, would you end up paying £1 to see any ten of the following: l A motorcycle stunt show with Jumpin’ Jez Avery l A Birds of Prey Display involving young volunteers l Bob Hogg’s Sheepdog Exhibition with Ducks and Geese l TV Star Dave Benson Phillips or
Toonattik and Milkshake star Anna Williamson on Saturday and Worldwide legend Dame Vera Lynn on Friday l Science Shows and interactive exhibits l Trampolines/Climbing Walls l Laser Quasar/Giant Inflatables l Petting Animals l Circus Training l Three Art Activities with Fab Lollies, the Crazy Comic Club, and Ringway Ltd: l ‘Be a Radio Announcer’ with Mercury FM l A Children’s Talent Competition with nearly £1,000 of prize money l Albion in the Community’ soccer coaching and competitions l Clay Pigeon Shooting but with laser guns. lGolf, Tennis, and Archery. For what it’s worth, the sheepdog show and certainly the birds of prey event are more exciting than you might at first imagine, and if you take along a good picnic and see if you can grab a few freebies from the Fab ice cream stand, it might not hit you too hard in the pocket. By the way, kids under two go free and there are discounts for families (Family Ticket for 4 is £36 ; 5 is £44; for 6 is £50 and any further tickets are £8) Each day Dave Benson Phillips (star of ‘Get Your Own Back’, Playdays, and Playhouse Disney to name but a few) will
take charge of proceedings and get the kids totally involved with the fun, games and music. He will also be helping to host our Talent Competition and World Record ‘Fights’. On Friday (Access for All day, for children with special needs and their carers) the Largest Bun Fight is held, and on Saturday the largest Wet Sponge Fight will take place. On Sunday the weekend will conclude with a DBP Special World Record Attempt to create the Largest Gunge Fight ever. If you want to participate in the World Record for the Most People Dressed as Story Book Characters, you need to arrive wearing the costume and you will also receive a voucher for a free Cinema Ticket from Horsham’s Capitol Theatre. Kidz Stuff is proud to be part of the ‘National Family Week’ festivities. At 3.30pm on Saturday, groups from all over the country will be attempting to break the Record for the World’s Largest 3 Legged Race in Multiple Locations....and we are one of them. The first 800 kids that take part in one of the five World Record Attempts will receive a special Family Week Goody Bag. The show runs each day from 10am until 6pm. Tickets are £7.50 on Friday and £10 on Saturday and Sunday. www.kidzstuff.org.uk

Do It the easy way with new website Horsham District Council has revamped its website - which is great news for the rest of us as, let’s face it, the last one was a bit rubbish. www.horsham.gov.uk now comes complete with a customisable homepage to allow people to choose what information they want displayed. The new look website includes a ‘do it’ section on the front page, making it easy to pay, report, find and apply for some of the most popular council services. The council website is currently used by around 750,000 individual website visitors a year along with over 3.1 million page hits. Main changes to the website, as well as a customisable homepage, include: • Quick links from the
homepage to popular and heavily used pages • Better A-Z navigation to allow the customer to easily find the information they are looking for • Making it easier to do business with the Council for ordering and paying for services • Use of the familiar Google search to locate information • Interactive mapping facility to access planning applications • New planning public access Leader of Horsham District Council, Cllr Robert Nye, said: “Following our appointment last year, I and the new Cabinet initiated the work required to produce this all new website. “Its introduction brings
the Council’s web based communication into the 21st Century. “We are delighted with the new site and are confident it will greatly improve the ease with which our residents can use the web to interface with the Council. “We will continue to develop the website, the Council’s web presence and our communications in general, to yet further enhance our customers’ ability to quickly and easily obtain the services they need and our ability to communicate with each other.” The new website complies with disability legislation to ensure it is accessible for all and is cleaner and less congested than the previous site to improve navigation for all
visitors to the site. The site will also have enabled access so mobile ‘phones and other handheld devices can access the content more easily, which will increase visitor numbers to the site.
“Just go visit the new council website. Come on, Do it, Do it”

Warning to parents over youth trouble Let’s be honest, Horsham’s youth are a pretty good bunch, on the whole. A report card that reads one smashed up phone booth and a garden hedge on fire from a teenage collective of thousands is no reason for us grown ups to live in fear of town ‘yobs’. But nonetheless, the lighter evenings of summer typically brings a rise in the number incidents of anti-social behaviour across the district. With that in mind, parents are being urged to know where their children are and what they're doing when they go out. Horsham District Police Commander Chief Inspector Mark Trimmer of Sussex Police said: "'Although incidents of anti-social behaviour in Horsham District continue to decline on a year by year basis, the period 8pm to midnight during the months of May to July remains the busiest in terms of reports concerning 1 3 - 1 8 year olds. “ A l though it is only a small percentage of young people
that are causing problems, the impact on the community can be significant. "Typically we receive complaints of groups of young people gathering in groups on playing fields and outside shops being rowdy and abusive to passers by. “We also see an increase in the levels of criminal damage being reported.” Under age drinking is a particular problem, as it has been for many years, and often a contributory factor to anti-social behaviour with young people who are under the influence being more likely to become aggressive and put themselves in risky situations. Sussex Police is therefore urging parents to help them keep their children safe by making sure they know where they are when they go out, what they are doing and who they are with. Greg Charman, Community Safety Manager for the Horsham District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, said: "We are aware of the need to provide young people with things to do over the summer holidays that are safe and enjoyable and are working closely with West Sussex Youth Service to provide a programme of different activities."

Not a lot, you would think, but nonetheless there was a disappointing turnout for the Southwater Football Club second annual charity bike
ride on Sunday. Despite another excellent year on the pitch for the club, particularly in the junior section, less than 40 of nearly 200 registered players turned out over the Bank Holiday weekend. Once again, those that did make the effort had a great time, dressing u p

cerning donations and prizes and they were the only ones to respond. “I would also like to thank the George and Dragon (in Dragons Green) for putting on a brilliant barbecue.” The ride starts at the sports club on Church Lane and heads off down the rural roads to the Dragon, on to Warnham Social Club and then to the Bax Castle. All of the money raised is split evenly between the football club and St Catherine’s Hospice, and female club members will again be raising funds for the hospice at the fast approaching Midnight Walk in Horsham Park (see events page)

He hopes to help The Friends break last year’s amazing record of raising over £14,000 for the school. Before the official opening judging starts at the popular Companion Dog Show, run again this year by local supporter Ann Penny. A big attraction is the unique and ever popular 10¼"gauge steam railway, The Manor Railway, which is only open to the public once a year on fete day. The fun for all the family will continue through the afternoon until 5pm. The Horsham Youth Concert Band will get things going with their brand of rousing music. They will hand over to a demonstration by Canine Partners, who will be followed by Phoenix Voices, a newly formed local ladies choir, under their new MD Vivien Nichols. The afternoon will be rounded off by ISIS Belly Dancers, an amateur group from the Amberley area who proved very popular
last year. The afternoon will include a fly past by a World War II plane, and all arrivals will have the opportunity of winning a trip in this and in a helicopter. All the family will be able to enjoy a massive bouncy castle and fun fair attractions, TR car display, remote controlled model tanks, baseball speed radar, face painting, stalls, sideshows and refreshments. Tom’s epic Odyssey Tom Bradley will play on the same bill as the Bootleg Beatles
Five local bands took to the stage over the weekend of May 22nd-23rd to battle it out for a slot in the Odyssey Festival to be held on July 3rd and 4th in aid of Sparks. Held in the Malden Family Theatre at Windlesham House School, the entries for the Big Band Theory competition included performances from Lights of Paris, Tom Bradley, Johnny Independent, Lighting Boots and Half Crown. The audience was also treated to a special guest appearance by Will and the People who will also be performing at Odyssey. Introduced by Anthony Hutchings, Windlesham’s Director of Music and the inspiration behind Odyssey, the first round of the competition saw each band perform an opening number for the panel of five judges which included Sharon Marshall (from ITV’s This Morning Show) and Hot Chocolate’s Patrick Olive. Round two gave the musicians a second opportunity to impress both the judges and the audience and was then followed by a final play off for the top three scoring bands.
The competition culminated in a nail-biting finish which saw Lights of Paris and Tom Bradley neck and neck going in to the last vote. The final decision went to Tom Bradley who scooped first prize by three votes to two. The winners will now join a star-studded line up on the afternoon of Sunday, 4th July for a festival of music performed on a full size rock stage in the beautiful grounds of Windlesham House School, just off the A24 between Washington and Findon. Top of the bill will be the Bootleg Beatles with performances during the afternoon from Will & The People, Speedboatz, Borrowed Time, Alan Pownall, The Dopple Shift, Calista, Last Letter Read, DJ Black Eyed Peter & Kim Matthews and the West Sussex County Big Band. In addition to the music programme there will be a shopping village, food and drink stalls, bouncy castle, Super Cars display, Face Painting, beer tent, children’s activity stalls and a fairground. Info and tickets from info@odyssey10.com or 01903 877718.
Green market The next Wisborough Green Farmers and Village Market will be held on 10th June from 9am to 12.30pm in the Village Hall with about 25 stalls.

The picturesque Greets Inn at Warnham is offering a couple of lucky individuals the chance of getting down and dirty in the pub garden. Owners of The Greets Inn, Natalie and Duncan Entwistle have created two allotment areas, whilst redesigning the pub’s gardens ahead of summer. The couple are now inviting anyone keen to ‘grow their own’ to take up tenancy, which is being offered completely free of charge. Duncan Entwistle said: “With people often waiting years for allotment space to become available, Natalie and I thought it would be a great idea to offer-up some of the garden here at The Greets. “We have made room for two good size allotment areas, for which we do not intend charging rent, but ask that we have the opportunity to purchase a percentage of whatever is har-
vested, to be used here in the kitchen at the Inn.” Under the ownership of Natalie and Duncan Entwistle, The Greets Inn has established a fine reputation for its uncomplicated menu, featuring rustic Sussex fayre and an abundance of fresh, often locally sourced produce. Looking ahead, they hope that a selection of future ingredients will be harvested from the pub’s garden. The two allotment areas at The Greets Inn will be allocated in early July, with names pulled from a wheel-barrow. Anyone interested should pay a visit to The Greets before the end of June and submit their name and contact details to a member of the team, saying they’re interested in getting mucky in the garden! Does it rain in Spain? Could one of the town’s most successful sporting events be heading for sunnier climes next year? weather. And the event, supported by Bradley’s family and organised by some of his closest friends, was again hit by miserable weather on Saturday. The organisers are now considering beating the British weather by scaling down the tournament and taking it to sunny Spain! Organiser Alex Bethall said: “It’s something we’re already thinking about. Obviously it’ll be fewer teams as you couldn’t take 32 sides out there, but at least we’d be almost certain to get sunshine!” Whatever the weather, the event, held at Horsham Rugby Club, was an-

One of the oldest players was grandad Jeff Morris (front left) who described his team’s performances as “we started off by losing 2-0 and it got progressively worse” Continued from Page 26 other great success, attracting 32 teams in a World Cup style event. In the end it was Slovenia, made up primarily of Horsham Juventus players, who took top honours. The final of the plate competition was won by Slovakia - a fine performance
as the team had not won a single game in the group stages. And for the first time there was a ladies section of the tournament, with Total Chaos winning the trophy. P e t e r Rooke and sons Daniel and Luke played once again in mem-

Weird news from Planet Earth (mostly USA!)
Strength of the bear
A video of an Asian black bear seemingly practising Kung Fu moves with a stick has become a big hit on the internet. The clip, which was uploaded to YouTube a few days ago, shows the bear first playing with the 5ft stick with a paw. The bear then appears to start twirling the stick rapidly around its head. At one point the bear - named
Cloud - even throws the spinning stick above its head and then catches it again. The clip was filmed at the Asa Zoo in Hiroshima, Japan.
A Chinese elementary school is teaching its boys to be more masculine as it's worried they are turning into sissies. Qinlinglu Elementary School in Zhengzhou, Henan province, has launched an initiative called 'Looking for a Real Man' to encourage boys to act more like boys. As part of this the youngsters
are taught how to act more masculine and must take an oath swearing to act like 'real men', reports the Dahe Daily.

Man made mince meat
Police said a cleaning man was taken to a hospital after being sucked into a machine at a sausage-making company in Massachusetts. The accident happened as the man was cleaning the vacuumtype machine that is used to season the meat. Police said the man's head and shoulders became stuck in the machine after it somehow activated while being cleaned.
Lt. Carole Germano told The Salem News that the man was freed from the machine and showed no obvious sign of trauma, but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
Alaska State Troopers are puzzled by a gruesome discovery in the city of North Pole: 26 headless chickens carefully arranged at a coop. Police say the fly-infested carcasses found Monday were arranged in a 12- to 15-footlong line pattern that ended in a circle. There was no sign of the missing heads.
Three chickens were left unharmed. A spokesman said the officers "have no idea what the thought process was."

the fence of ther balcony of an adjoining building.

Biggest carnival procession ever? The organisers of the forthcoming ‘Sparks in the Park’ event are promising the “most amazing carnival procession Horsham has ever seen”. Clearly they were not around to see the ‘Conga’ from the St Leonard’s Arms into the town centre after David Beckham’s goal against Greece in 2001! Anyway, Horsham District Council has teamed up with one of the leading carnival companies in England to organise and stage an energetic, colourful and flamboyant carnival procession with the emphasis on participation and fun - and we’re all invited to attend. The procession will see nearly 80 amazing wing and skirt costumes from the Kinetika Spectacle Collection parade through Horsham Park in Horsham, West Sussex as part of the ‘Sparks in the Park’ event on Sunday 25th July. Leading up to the day there will be a number of ways to get involved and participate in the carnival, including carnival making workshops, and samba workshops which hope to create and form Horsham’s very own samba band. On the day itself, there will
ebrate different countries of the world and each costume graphically represents the spirit and sense of each place - inspiring the theme of this year’s carnival: One World. These spectacular costumes were designed for the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009 opening & closing ceremonies directed by Stephen Powell in Abu Dhabi in December last year. Alongside these, and building on the theme of One World, will be 20 new costumes designed and created in Kinetika-led workshops by local artists and community groups. These costumes will depict and celebrate Horsham, West Sussex, and their communities. Throughout the whole carnival will be a strong strand of inclusion and accessibility with representation from the Blue Touch Paper which aims to make carnival accessible for all members of the community. The Sparks in the Park event replaces last year’s enjoyable ‘Big Day Out’ event in Horsham also be carnival quick makes, join in samba workshops and a giant carnival cube encour-

Shelley Stumped
Heath are on a roller A Shelley Pub cricket team took on Broadbridge Heath in a fundraising match on Bank Holiday Monday. The event was a great success that made £350 profit - a good start towards Broadbridge Heath’s Roller Fund. It was a friendly but competitive game with many abilities on show for a large, vocal crowd. BBH batted first and amassed 180 for 4 with three players retiring on 25. The Shelley started brightly but were pegged back before a brisk 56 from Julian Bridgeman got the Shelley to 171, just 10 runs short of victory in a tense finish which was enjoyed by everybody. The club’s next event against The Shelley is on August Bank Holiday Monday, which will see ladies stoolball take place in the morning with a gents T20 in the afternoon.

The circus is coming Martin Lacey stands with the rather disappointingly named Khan the Tiger (not that we’d tell him so to his face) as the Great British Circus prepares for another visit. The circus, one of the most controversial in the country as it is one of the few that uses animals in its acts, comes to the West Sussex Showground in Dial Post on 8th-20th June. Martin is the lion and tiger trainer, although lions will not be in the next show. You can expect horses and camels though, possibly elephants and certainly tigers. The first show on Tuesday, 8th is at 7pm. Shows then take place on weekdays at 5pm and 7.30pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 5pm, Sundays 3pm only and no shows on Monday 14th. You can get your hands on discount vouchers on the Great British Circus website.

Space team come of Age Review: Our Town Space Drama Project Broadbridge Heath
Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town”, written in the Great Depression, set in the years before World War I, and revived more recently on Broadway to rave reviews, played in Broadbridge Heath to packed houses over four nights as the latest production of the Space Drama Project. With tightly acted ensemble casting, the speciality of Space, the play resonated with many as it spoke of life, its fulfilments and frustrations, in a small town in New Hampshire just as the twentieth century, the era of mass communication, mass participation and mass slaughter was beginning, by pointing up the detail in the lives of its characters, and the way in which they were oblivious of those fine points. Using the ancient technique
of the chorus, but modernised in the ambiguous character of the Stage Manager, who observes, but is powerless to direct events, Wilder and The Space invited us into the lives of these people. Ably played by Davie Robertson, not only were we led around the town by this all knowing guide, but we were told of the lives of its inhabitants, not only in its past, but in their futures, so that there was an eerie feeling of pain for them as we, but not they, came to know how their dreams would come to nothing. This became particularly apparent in the final act, where the long dead taught the newly dead about the pain of having eternity to dwell on what had been missed by them and those they had loved as they had lived their lives. Also too, how the dead anaesthetise that hurt by withdrawal. The cast here showed their skill in the contrast of their playing, revealing the way in which their characters' longings had been thwarted; the legacy that had come to one of the dead, and which she had been desperate in life to use to
travel, to visit Paris, had been passed down and translated into the purchase of a pig feeder. Although she was dead, the character, portrayed with skill by Fiona Kennard, still felt the mundanity of the thwarting of her desire. And though the dead could not communicate with the living, Wilder, through the text and the setting, could tell us to concentrate on living our lives to the full and savouring each minute. The play has many lighter moments too, even comic, as when the local academic lists the history of the town with both pride and pomposity, two characteristics often linked. And at its heart, of course, is the love story of George and Emily, whose awkwardness and optimism shone out in performances by two young students from Hurtwood House, George Gillies and Betsy Mackenzie, and which both warmed and lit up the stage. They played the characters with innocence and clarity. The families and townsfolk too were truly brought to life by a group that has made its well
The Space Drama Project deserved reputation by working together as a whole so that the production was much more than the sum of their individual playing. The Director, Hugo Ellis used the Church Space at St John’s to full effect in a spare, elegant
and totally convincing set in which the whole came together to entrance the audience. With the backing of the newly registered charity, The Space Arts Trust, this group can look forward to a future
different to that portrayed in the play. They are to be congratulated for this excellent production, and their audiences look forward to their next. Review submitted to The Resident

Connells’ new deals Local estate agency Connells in Horsham is pleased to announce it is now offering a new exclusive range of 90% loan to value mortgages. The new, limited edition range is now available through the Connells Group’s national network of in-house mortgage brokers, and should provide a much-needed lifeline to buyers struggling to raise hefty deposits for loans. “We are delighted to offer this new 90 per cent loan to customers, as part of our efforts to encourage lenders to help improve the housing market,” says Daryl Melia, Mortgage Consultant for Connells in Horsham. “It is great to see that lenders are extending their product ranges and opening up the market so that first-time buyers can realise their ambition of home ownership.” However, Connells is urging would-be homebuyers hoping to take advantage of the new mortgage to act fast as there are limited funds available. If you are thinking of moving in 2010 and would like to take advantage of the new 90 per cent loan to value mortgage deals, which Connells can offer, contact your local branch on 01403 256331.

How do you create the room your child wants, but also one that doesn't have to be redecorated when he/she has become fed up with football, fairies, aliens or the latest TV show? Hopefully with a few design tips this can be accomplished and without having to spend a fortune. Before you get out the paint pots and fabric swatches, get to know what is in your child's room – just how many toys have they got? Have they outgrown some? How much storage and what type will you need? There is no point spending the cash just to have a beautifully decorated room, but the floor is still covered in toys and bits and bobs. Spend a day going through the room and then list exactly what is needed: Bed , Wardrobe, Drawers, Storage for toys and books, Somewhere to put certificates, party invites, postcards, Seating, and desk.
Involving the Kids Once you know what you want to achieve start to involve the children. What are their favourite colours? What toys couldn't they bear to be parted from? If they could choose one item for their room what would it be?
Themes Themes can be great or a real headache. I would advise, unless you don't mind changing the room every couple of years, against big beautiful murals of favourite characters that will be forgotten about in a year or two. Instead why not look at using large stickers, that can easily be removed from the walls. You can buy packs of 60 large room stickers for around £40.
Storage I am always talking about storage – but we never seem to have enough of it – especially for children. Children hoard all sorts of things, from playing cards, to cuddly toys, dolls, cars, and building blocks. Where possible I don't believe in spending a lot of money if I don't have to, especially for a childs' bedroom. Plastic trugs are fabulous for holding kids toys. They come in lots of different colours and only cost around £5.
Chilt House £755,000
Two stunning homes Guy Leonard & Company is delighted to commence the marketing of two stunning new properties situated in an established private road within the sought after village of West Chiltington constructed to an extremely high standard by James Homes Limited. There are two different styles of property on offer, both in their own way designed with much thought offering everything that modern living together with a fusion of character and traditional appearance. Chilt House is being offered to the market with a Guide Price of £755,000 for the free-
hold interest. It is designed in a traditional Sussex style house of character including rustic brick elevations, leaded light windows, hardwood window frames and clay effect tiled roof. Internally the property offers a luxury specification with a hint of contemporary featuring light oak French style internal doors, oak staircase and stunning continental bathroom suites.
Knick Knacks I love to have somewhere for a child to display his/her works of art, or party invites and certificates. This is where a pinboard comes into its own. These can either be upholstered pinboards, or magnetic pinboards. They can be colourful to match the rest of the room, or metal magnetic ones. These are just a few ideas to get you started. I am sure that alongside your own ideas and those of your childs you will end up with a truly unique bedroom that you will all love.

Welcoming Hip changes
Agents delighted at HIP scrapping Among the policies to emerge from the joint agreement signed by the new Conservative and Lib Dem coalition government is the scrapping of Home Information Packs. Anyone selling their home from 21st May no longer needs a HIP. The statement said: “The parties agree to implement a full programme of measures to fulfill our joint ambitions for a low carbon and eco-friendly economy, including …retention of energy performance certificates while scrapping HIPs.” The National Association of Es-
tate Agents (NAEA), which has long campaigned against HIPs, is among those to welcome the news. Peter Bolton King, NAEA chief executive, said: “This is great news for the housing market and for house buyers, few of whom have paid much attention to these pointless packs. “It is also good news for sellers, who will no longer need to shell out hundreds of pounds for a piece of pointless regulation that benefits no one.” Among other property market news was further evidence that house prices are holding firm.
According to the latest monthly survey of Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) members, in April 17% more said prices were rising rather than falling. This is up on March’s figure of 9%. Sales have also increased. The average homes sold per surveyor rose to 17.4 between February and the end of April. The RICS figures carry a warning though. The rise in sales continues to outstrip the increase in enquiries from possible new buyers. RICS says this is likely to lead to price cuts in the coming months, however estate agents that took
Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and Housing Minister Grant Shapps recently announced that the requirement for homeowners to provide a Home information Pack (HIP) when selling a home, has been suspended. Suspending HIPs will reduce the cost of selling a home, remove a layer of regulation from the process and provide help to the housing market during the recovery. Sellers will be required to provide an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), although once commissioned, properties can be marketed before the EPC has been received. David Jeffrey from Woodlands Estate Agents, the member of Home Sale Network in Horsham said: “We are pleased that the new Coalition Government has ended the uncertainty surrounding HIPs in this announcement. “With sellers now able to market their properties without the need for a HIP, this should encourage more properties onto the market and assist the housing market during its recovery. “We look forward to the boost this will bring to the current market and believes that this summer could be the time to sell your home.”
part in the survey continue to be optimistic that prices will continue rising. RICS spokesman Jeremy Leaf said: “The start of spring has seen renewed optimism with the good weather improving sentiment and surveyors expecting an increase in both sales and house prices.” Latest Department for Communities house price figures add further weight to the argument that the housing market and prices have held firm. According to the figures house prices rose by 9.7% year on year in March. This is the 12th consecutive month of price rises. The new coalition government by David Cameron and Nick Clegg (left) has ditched HIPs

The Range Rover will celebrate its 40th birthday on 17th June. One of the most significant vehicles in the history of motoring, the Range Rover was the world's first vehicle as good on-road as off-road. It was the first fully capable luxury 4x4 and was a milestone in the development of the SUV
motors The one not a single reader needs to know
All of you in Horsham that own a J Craft Torpedo will be simply thrilled that it now comes with a comprehensive multi-media system that can be entirely controlled from an iPhone or iPod Touch. Owners can remotely control music, radio, their on-board movie collection and TV feeds via the on-board Apple Mac Mini with EyeTV! Don’t you wish you could travel back in time to 1969 and offer $12,500 for the DB5?
Coolest car on Earth If you, like all of us here at The Resident, have millions of pounds in the bank and just want to blow it all on some movie memorabilia, then this is your lucky day! RM Auctions has announced the consignment of one of ‘the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century’ – the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 James Bond movie car – to its annual ‘Automobiles of London’ event at the Battersea Evolution in London on 27th October. It is available for sale for the first time in history and expected to achieve in excess of $5 million. The car is being offered by RM in association with Sotheby’s. Well-known around the world by its original UK registration number, FMP 7B, this Aston Martin is one of only two, and the sole remaining, of the original ‘007’ DB5s as featured on screen with Sean Connery behind the wheel in the Goldfinger and Thunderball movies. With its 'rather interesting modifications' originally conceived by Oscar-award-winning
special effects expert, John Stears, this authentic Bond movie car is factory-fitted with the full complement of operational ‘Q-Branch’ gadgets, including machine guns, bullet-proof shield, revolving number plates, tracking device, removable roof panel, oil slick sprayer, nail spreader and smoke screen, all controlled from factory installed toggles and switches hidden in the center arm-rest. “Like ‘Q’ , we never joke about our work, which is why RM is consistently entrusted with the sale of the world’s most significant collector cars like the REAL 007 Aston Martin DB5 movie car,” said Max Girardo, Managing Director, RM Europe. “RM is known for world-record-setting results and we expect nothing less for 007’s iconic DB5.” The DB5 was originally loaned to EON Productions for the filming of the two Bond movies, and returned to the Aston Martin Lagonda factory after its subsequent promotional tour. Jerry Lee, an American radio broadcaster based in Philadelphia, PA, convinced the factory to
sell FMP 7B to him for $12,000 in 1969, thereby becoming its first and only ex-factory owner. It has remained in his possession and has rarely been seen publicly over the past 40+ years. Mr. Lee plans to use the proceeds from the sale of FMP 7B to further the charitable work of The Jerry Lee Foundation, a multi-national initiative dedicated to solving social problems associated with poverty, with an emphasis on crime prevention. “The James Bond car has brought me much enjoyment for some 40 years,” said Jerry Lee. “Even as I sell it and use the proceeds to fund the Jerry Lee Foundation, the car will continue to give me great pleasure as it furthers the mission of the Foundation to do good around the world.” Today, FMP 7B is presented in highly original condition and recently underwent a careful re-com-
missioning program by RM Auto Restoration, returning it to running condition after the many years of static display in Mr. Lee’s home. In advance of its auction debut at RM’s Automobiles of London sale on 27 October, the car is set to make its first 21st century public appearance at the Bondthemed Midsummer Classic/Thunderball concours and black-tie reception scheduled for 26th June at the Stoke Park Club located outside of London. For event and ticket information, visit www.midsummerclassic.co.uk
The one if you can’t quite afford the DB5
A Berkshire man who collects cars from classic films and TV shows is to sell off his Batmobile - so somebody else can have a turn at driving it. Mark Perkins, 47, also owns the Flinstones' car, Mr Bean's Mini, James Bond's Aston Martin, Starsky and Hutch's Ford Torino and Del Boy's Reliant Regal van. But he has taken the decision to sell his Batmobile, which he bought in 1988, at an auction in Surrey, where it is expected to fetch £40,000, reports the Daily Telegraph. He said: "It is sitting in my garage collecting dust. I don't really want to sell it. But classic cars, and this one in particular, should be driven to be enjoyed. "I've loved taking it on the road over the years. However, I will have little time to do so in the future, and so sadly it's time someone else derived pleasure of ownership." The property developer has spent 25 years building up his collection, which he says is worth £500,000, at his Ascot home. It also includes replicas of Batman's Batbike, the Ghostbusters' Ectomobile, Noddy's Toyland car, and he has just agreed a deal to buy The Monkees' 1967 Pontiac GTO.

Citroen reveals new C4 Citroën has released first details of the brand new C4. Citroen claims it is designed to “exceed the highest expectations”, although that’s not true as I expected it to go 300mph. The New Citroën C4 boasts a real positive energy - with high levels of quality, style, interior space and occupant comfort, as well as responsive handling and impressive environmental credentials. With its sculpted lines and high quality finish, New C4 cuts a distinctive profile, striking an impression of strength, stability and balanced proportions. Defined and flowing surfaces, such as the purposeful front end and rear spoiler, hint at the model’s optimised aerodynamics. The tasteful addition of chrome detailing combines with the dynamic headlight styling and sculpted alloy wheels to give the new model a premium presence. New C4 features compact exterior dimensions and generous internal volumes that make it spacious and thoroughly versatile. At just 4.33m long, 1.79m wide and 1.49m high, New C4 is just 5cm longer, 2cm wider and
3cm taller than the current model. The 408-litre boot is the biggest in its class. Alongside existing range technologies, such as EGS (Electronic Gearbox System), hill start assist, automatic electric parking brake, Lane Departure Warning System and Xenon dual-function directional headlamps, New C4 will be available with convenient and useful new technologies - some of which are unique to the segment. These include a new blind-spot monitoring system, a cornering light function, cruise control and speed-limiter with road speed memory settings, and the innovative eTouch. New C4 will be available with Citroën’s new micro-hybrid eHDi powertrains, which feature the latest generation Stop & Start system that helps deliver low CO2 emissions. The New C4 will be produced at the Mulhouse PSA Peugeot Citroën plant in France and will premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September. The C4 will be launched in the UK early in 2011.

Park claim first derby honours
The local derby this year resulted in a win by ten points for Horsham Park, who were in the lead from the very first end, never to be caught by Horsham. Although rinks were shared two all, Horsham’s top rink of Barry Baillie, Ray Coburn, John Hitch and skip Bill Monckton (+6) could not match the Park’s top rink of Robin Peters, John Hunter, Frank Heath and skip Frank Thomas (+12). Horsham will seek revenge for the 80-70 defeat in the Town Challenge on Sunday 22nd August, when mixed games will be played simultaneously on both greens.
Rink scores, Horsham names first: B Baillie, R Coburn, J Hitch, B Monckton beat J Leadbeater, M Daichendt, J Pratt, B Dominy 22-16; R Calder, M Bridgman, R Pretty, M Bright beat R Ansell, A Langford, I Holmes, H Smith 17-13; D Upton, D Kemp, C Holmes, C Watson lost to R Peters, J Hunter, F Heath, F Thomas 16-28; N Porter, D Marden, D Grogan, D Locke lost to M Westearth, D Hadman, P Topper, D Peters 15-23 But Horsham returned to win-

sport
Join the Rovers Chesworth Rovers are a Horsham based team and are looking for New Players for 2010/11 season at U11s and U13s. It’s a family friendly club playing in the Horsham & District Youth Football League on Saturday mornings. For more information please call Rob Brand (U13s) on 07967-475433 or email: rob.brand@2e2.com or Conrad Hull (U11s Youth) on 07770 518894 (conreb@talktalk.net)
Boost for Chase ning ways on Sunday, May 23rd by defeating Burgess Hill by 78-70. At the halfway stage, Horsham were 15 shots down, but a resounding win by top rink of David Marden, Barbara Hill and skip Simon Felton (+18) more than made up for two rinks lost by 5
shots each. The fourth rink drew. Another comprehensive win for Horsham followed on Monday by over 60 shots against Crawley own. The green was running quite fast, unusual for the time of year, but reflecting the lack of rain in the last month.
Horsham’s reasonable lead at tea could not be countered by Crawley Town, who lost on all rinks. Top rink was David Grogan, Tony Bacot, Pam Venn and skip Bill Monckton (+24), with Roy Pretty (+16) and Doug Locke (+16) giving solid support.
Birthday for Betty as bowls season starts
As temperatures soared, Chesworth Rovers Under 8s ended their 2009/2010 season at the six-a-side tournament in Ashington, on Saturday 22nd May. The club entered two teams in this tournament, who got to play on mini soccer pitches named after famous stadiums such as Nou Camp and Wembley. Due to the age of the boys, the match results are not recorded and there is no final to play for. But every single boy battled to try and make a win for their team. The 6 a side tournaments are a great chance for the boys to play in different positions, and against other teams that they may not have come up against in the season. All the children playing in the U8s tournament received a medal for their participation. Mark Christer, team manager, said: “Both our teams played good football, with one having a bit more success than the other. All the boys battled hard, even in the heat. It is great to see them all at the end receiving the medals.”
A tournament hosted by North Sussex Football Academy at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre on May 22nd raised £522 for Chase Children’s Hospice in Guildford. The Academy holds training sessions at Horsham Park on Saturday mornings from 10am, and children aged from four are welcome to join on a pay as you play basis, £3 per session.
Baseball change
Horsham Junior Baseball Club has put back its fun day. It was due to be held this weekend but has now been put back until June 19th, due to a delay in transporting equipment from overseas. Visit www.horshambaseball.co.uk for more information

Howie buzzing about mascot race
Howie the Hornet presumably must have used some sort of bug sixth sense to discover we were using a pic of cricket mascot Sid The Shark this week. As the Horsham FC mascot has emailed us (I know - with those big, furry hands!) to let us know of an event he’s taking part in this weekend. Howie will be taking part in the 2010 Milton Keynes Theatre District Mascot Olympics which this year will have a World Cup theme. Howie took part in the inaugural MK Theatre District Mascot Olympics in 2007 in which he finished second overall against about 20 other mascots. This event is great fun and attracts mascots from all over the country as you can see from the list of this year's entrants below. There will be 6 events spread over the course of the day with prizes for each event as well as for the overall winner. The event will also be raising money for Spinal Injuries Association and as usual will be a great opportunity for all the mascots to cause chaos and have a lot of fun with members of the public who will be watching. Howie has not been able to attend the last two years events due to family commitments so he is looking forward to taking part again this year. He is looking forward to meeting old mascot friends but will be focused on trying to bring back the winner's trophy and with it the title of Mascot Olympic champion. We’ll let you know how Howie gets on...

Credit where it’s Dew for cricketers Bank Holiday Monday saw Horsham Cricket Club host the inaugural Dr Dew U10 Memorial Tournament at Cricketfield Road. Twelve teams from Horsham and surrounding areas (including Southwater, Pulborough, Barns Green and Roffey) entered the six a side quick cricket style competition and enjoyed a great day of fun competitive action. The tournament has been established in memory of Dr John Dew, the former Horsham player, club president and founder of colts’ cricket at Horsham, who sadly passed away in 2008. His legendary coaching structure became a model throughout Sussex. He encouraged and respected all youngsters and his legacy to the club has been the example he set in the way colts should play their cricket – to strive to win, but always fairly and with respect to the opposition as well as one’s team mates. His enthusiasm was infectious and not only did he inspire generations of young players but he also encouraged many
adults to become involved too. Despite failing health in his later years his enthusiasm and passion for cricket remained and he continued to watch cricket at Horsham and to keep in touch with the colts’ progress at all levels of the game. The 12 teams were divided into four groups for an initial round of pool matches. After a short break for lunch the teams entered the knock out stages, with the four teams in 3rd position in each group contesting the plate. The final of this competition saw Horsham Girls beat Horsham U9s. The remaining eight teams contested the shield and some exciting quarter f i n a l matches s a w Barns Green, Hor-

Alfie Hinchley, Ollie Ingles, Leon Donnelly sham, Roffey and Horsham Trinity through to the semi finals. The final was played out between Trinity and Barns Green. After a tight display of bowling had restricted Barns Green to 220 runs, Trinity replied with a fine spell of big hitting, including several sixes from Ollie Ingles, amassing a final score of 275 to win the match and become the first ever winners of the shield. It was very much a family day; ‘Sid the shark’ from Sussex CCC made a special guest appearance and there was a bar, bbq, and cake stall open throughout the day. The club also held a raffle with some excellent prizes donated by Sussex, MKK sports and various individuals.
Proceeds from the day will go towards the urgent replacement of the artificial nets which were completely destroyed by the bad weather over the winter. The trophies were presented by the current President Hugh Thomas and the day was run by volunteers from the club, including a number of older colts who generously gave up their Bank Holiday to help umpire and score throughout the day. The tournament was a great success and very much played ‘the Dr Dew way’ - he would have been thrilled to see so many colts of all ages having such an enjoyable day of cricket and fun together.

A small group of Atlantis swimmers descended on the Army Garrison town of Aldershot to compete recently at the Bracknell and Wokingham Level 1 Long Course Open Meet. The area is more used to soldiers training for battle but they would have been highly impressed with the fitness and determination shown by the swimmers from all the clubs competing. The event was held in the army’s own 50M pool and although not known for producing fast swims the Atlantis teams still managed some great results. Beth Britton (10) showed her future potential with some great personal bests in the 50 and 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 100 Fly. Cameron Lambourne performed to his usual high standard bagging 3 golds and 2 silvers, dominating his age group. Issy Dunlop took gold in the `100m Breaststroke for 15 year olds and Bex Lobley and Kelci O’Keefe both swam great races to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively in the same race. The races are seeded into previous performance times as opposed to ages and it is a great mark of the clubs development to have three swimmers in the final heat. Bex also took gold in the 200m breast. Kate Windle, 9, produced some great results including a 6th place in an extremely tough under 11 age group. Her sister Ella (11) won 2 silvers in the 200m Free and 400m IM. Joe Harrod who has been out with a shoulder injury narrowly missed out on breaking the magical 60 second barrier in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1.00.64.
Royal victory
Royal United attended the Northchapel 6a-side Football tournament. Despite the very wet conditions, the team played some exceptional football including a 7-1 win against Sompting United and went onto retain the Winners trophy. The squad of Aaron Chaplin, Tom Frankland, Harry Garman, Luke Polie, Jacob Waller, Connor Cushing, Stanley Rice and Lewis Clark all played their part in an excellent day’s football.
