t’s a great time to be British isn’t it? Many of us are still getting over the excitement of a Royal wedding last year and now we have not one but two more big events to look forward to. Which leads me nicely to our Best of British issue. We’ve got an interview with Olympic swimming hopeful and Sussex girl Gemma Spofforth, a feature on English fashion brand Jaeger’s spring/ summer collection and a red, white and blue-themed IT List - all giving a celebratory nod to Her Royal Highness and Team GB. Plus, the youngest man ever to row solo across any ocean also happens to be British. And better still, he’s from Kirdford. You can read why he embarked on such a journey on page 44. Ladies, if you’re into your shoes (I’m reliably informed it’s a safe assumption you will be) then you

might like our story on stilettos. Find out how they came about, and why they have become such an essential part of a woman’s wardrobe. One of the British hopefuls at this summer’s Olympic Games was born and bred here in Sussex - and she’s going for gold Four years ago this July, millions of Brits were watching sporting action at home, in pubs and in town centres as the excitement of the 2008 Beijing Olympics began. It was quite a spectacle, and one that will be hard for London to top. Yet, even the most optimistic of Team GB supporters couldn’t have predicted just how enthralling and successful the month-long event would be for our athletes. Spectators usually wait with eager anticipation for the high profile track events such as the 100m and 200m sprints two of the most watched events of any sport worldwide. In 2008 though, it was the pool that left us transfixed, as Team GB romped to a record-breaking medal tally to put the usually dominant US and Australian teams firmly in their place. Rebecca Adlington took most of the plaudits, grabbing three gold medals, yet it was the women’s team effort that drew unstinting praise from commentators and spectators alike. Among that team was one of our own – Sussexborn world backstroke swimming champion Gemma Spofforth, who only narrowly missed out on a podium prize in Beijing, pipped at the post for bronze by American Margaret Hoelzer in the 100m backstroke. The years that followed the Games would prove to be some of the most successful of Gemma’s career, first laying her Beijing ghosts to rest in 2009 at the World Swimming Championships in Rome, where she scooped gold in the 100m backstroke in world record time. She then continued her medal charge in 2010, taking two golds and a silver at the European Championships in Budapest and a trio of silvers at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. With the home Olympics looming large, and preparation for Team GB well underway, The Resident Magazine caught up with Gemma in Florida and her father Mark, a little closer

to home in Chichester, to discuss Gemma’s aspirations for London 2012, her life in the US and what’s next for Sussex’s swimming star. Born in 1987 in Shoreham-by-Sea, Gemma grew up in the village of Slindon, seven miles North-east of Chichester, and took to the water almost immediately. “I was only three when I first entered the pool. I was so tall (she’s 6ft now) that my mum lied and said I was five and was put in the older age group,” she told us. “I started my training under Chris Adams in Bognor Regis, where I went to school. When I was about 12, I realised I could go far in the sport. I started winning competitions and then moved to train in Portsmouth at around 14 to 15 and it was from then that things started to progress for me,” she continues. Both Gemma and her parents were keen that preparation was made for life after sport while her rise to fame was still in its infancy, which meant focusing as much on her studies as her time in the pool. Her dad, Mark, played the role of father and manager. “We did our level best to ensure that she didn’t have too many stresses and strains,” he said, “supporting her financially, taking her to meetings and training - basically just always being there for her, like parents should. In her younger years, I acted as something of a manager, dealing with the media etc. Now she has an agent and lives on the other side of the world so my role is that of a proud and supportive dad.” As it has for many elite sportspeople, America proved the biggest draw for Gemma, with facilities and opportunities that many institutions in the UK simply cannot compete with. “I moved out to Florida six years ago, having won a scholarship to study at the university. I majored in Family Youth and Community Sciences and I’m trained in crisis

intervention and suicidology and a crisis phone volunteer. I’ve just finished my second year at the University of Florida graduate school, studying counselling and mental health, with a view to moving into that as a career when I retire.” A ticket to study payment-free at a top Stateside university is a dream for most aspiring athletes and for Gemma it has played a significant role in her rise to achieving world success in the pool. “We have two 50m pools almost next to each other, a 50-yard pool and a huge gym that’s used by the University’s American football team. It’s amazing the facilities they have out here and from my experience, the UK just doesn’t compare in terms of what they can offer athletes like me.” Gemma was awarded full sponsorship by the University of Florida through a scholarship and represented their swim team. She was also lucky enough to receive sponsorship from British Swimming a year before the rules on funding for overseaseducated UK athletes were changed, which meant UK swimmers were not entitled to British Swimming funding if they trained and lived overseas. Gemma has always refused to class herself solely as a swimmer, having committed as much time and effort to her future career aspirations as her current ones, something that her dad insists he is perhaps more proud of than any medal she has won. “We always wanted her to be grounded and continue having an active life outside the sport, says Mark. “Further education and sorting out a career after swimming was important for all of us, and the fact that she has achieved all these and remained grounded makes me hugely proud – perhaps more so than anything else.” Gemma echoes her dad’s thoughts, and is in no doubts about her short and long term goals before and after London 2012. “I love swimming but I don’t want to go into the sport side of things when I retire. I want something different, away from swimming, something completely new. Mental health psychology and intervention are what I’m passionate about. I’m not tempted by sports psychology as I feel I can help more people in a different field.” Her choice of study has also led her to hold strong, and some may say, controversial views about the sport, especially the psychological and scientific dimension of modern preparations.

“Sports science is a little overdone in the UK. I feel too much emphasis is put on it in preparing athletes for major events. After all, on a stage like the Olympic Games, it just comes down to a swimmer and their performance in the pool. Sports psychology is far more important and has played a big part in my career,” she reveals. “I’ve almost become my own psychologist now, which may not be such a good thing, but because I’ve studied at the university I feel I already known what I’m going to be told when talking with the experts. That said, I’ve never really suffered from the mental side of performing but psychology is a passion for me and it’s what I want to pursue.” Optimistic and level-headed are what best describe Gemma’s attitude going into the home Olympics. “The London Games will be fantastic and I’m looking forward to competing in front of a home crowd in what will probably be my last major event. In swimming, you usually retire in your mid- to late-20s, or early 30s if you’re lucky and still feel capable. I think the home Olympics will be my last meet. I want to finish my career on a high and get into the medal standings if I can do it.” Mark is keeping his cards as close to his chest as Gemma, playing down expectations, yet fully behind his daughter in her hopes to grasp a medal. “All you can really do is reach the final - then the rest is a lottery. There’s only a minute difference in time between all the top swimmers, so it’s down to a bit of luck on the day. What Gemma does have on her side is experience. Some 70% of all medals go to the 30% of returning Olympians, so she stands a great chance.” Despite only having time to fly back to the UK twice a year, Gemma still feels like a Sussex girl at heart and finds it hard to put to bed thoughts of moving back to the south coast one day. “When I’m back in Florida, I realise that this is my home now. I have a house and a dog and my life is here. My career aspirations are best met in Florida and the place has helped so much in my career development and my studies so I won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. But every time I come home I miss it more and more the country and especially the chocolate, so sometimes I feel I could move back for good.”

SAILING SOLO James Hood meets Tommy Tippetts - a young man from Kirdford who has spent 82 days rowing solo across the Atlantic in a bid to raise awareness for charity If you’ve flown or sailed across any ocean you will know how vast it can be. It takes long enough to cross the Atlantic in a plane or in the comfort of a cruise liner so imagine the physical and mental challenge of rowing a 24 foot long boat from the Canary Islands to Barbados. That’s the epic task undertaken by Kirdford lad, Tommy Tippetts who, at the age of 22, became the youngest man to ever row any ocean, solo. At the end of 2011, he embarked on a one-man rowing trip across the Atlantic, for charity. You might wander, as I did, if that’s even possible. Row? On your own? For 82 days? “It’s a long time, but the boats are more impressive than you think. Mine was equipped with navigation systems, a small cabin to keep supplies and somewhere to sleep at night, as well as a solar powered gadget that turns sea water into drinking water”, Tommy told The Resident Magazine. Funny you should mention the nighttime Tommy - What was that like? “At first it took some getting used to. When the moon and stars weren’t lighting up the ocean it could feel pretty eery, and one night a flying fish hit me in the face which really startled me. But I did get used to it. There’s nothing else out there. And when the stars were out it was pretty beautiful. And I would go to sleep and know that when I woke up I would be a few miles closer to Barbados.” You might wander why someone would put themselves through something so challenging. But Tommy had good reason - raising money for a charity that is close to his heart; Mind, which supports people with mental health problems. He added: “Before I went I spent about 16 months preparing physically but also raising the money I needed to make the journey. It’s

a costly exercise. The boat alone costs around £25,000 and then of course I wanted to make a substantial donation to my chosen charity. I raised a lot through generous advertisers and friends, family and the public. I’ve now raised almost £15,000 for Mind.” And so with 82 days at sea alone, were there times when he had wished he had turned around? “At first I had a bit of a false start due to some bad weather and technical issues so I did wonder what I had got myself into. But once I had set off the second time it was plain sailing for the most part. It’s really important to have a routine because spending 82 days alone is challenging. In fact, most of the trip was more of a mental challenge than a physical one. I had a load of parcels that my friends and family had given me and I would open one every ten days.” And what about safety? When conditions can be harsh enough for even larger boats, was it a dangerous attempt for a one-man rowing team? “It’s not as dangerous as you think. If anything went very wrong, I had an emergency beacon, a radio and under international law, other sailors or boats have a duty of care to help someone in trouble. After 82 days of solitude on his boat, and after losing around 15 kilos in weight, Tommy arrived in Barbados, where he had become something of a hero. So I was curious to know if it was all worth it at the end? “It was amazing. An adventure that I’m so pleased I did. Art consultant Maddi Reid uncovers the truth about original prints and explains why you shouldn’t overlook them even if you’re a serious collector

Visit any number of art fairs and galleries and you can expect to find a wide range of original prints for sale among the paintings and sculptures. Whether you’re looking for an investment or something to brighten up your walls, original prints allow people to buy a work of art from an artist that they might not otherwise be able to afford. Sometimes confusion arises because reproduction prints of paintings (giclée) and photographs are often called ‘limited edition prints’, a term which is also used for original prints. Whilst many reproduction prints are excellent quality, they are simply copies of an already completed work of art and often ‘limited’ to thousands of the same image. I am often surprised at exhibitions to hear the remarks people make when talking about original prints; from “I wouldn’t buy a print - I only want the original” to “Yes, but it’s only a print”. Whilst original prints can be seen as a more affordable way of getting art on your walls, this doesn’t mean that they are second-rate substitutes for the real (painted) thing. Far from being poor man’s paintings, printmaking is a standalone art form in its own right and host to a huge variety of complex and intriguing creative processes. An original print is made when the artist works a design onto a surface (cutting into a block of wood, for example, or engraving onto copper) and then transfers the image from that surface onto another to create an ‘impression’ of it, typically printing ink onto paper. There are four main printmaking media - etching, lithography, screen-printing

and relief printing and printmaking effects vary hugely depending on which technique an artist has used. Limited edition original prints are produced in restricted numbers and this scarcity of supply can make them sought-after by collectors. The number produced is determined by the artist and as each print is produced by hand, great care and skill is required to print a consistent edition. After the full edition is printed, the original block, plate or stone is defaced in some way so that no more prints can be taken. One of the most exciting things about printmaking today is the number of contemporary artists devoted to mastering and reinventing it. This year saw the 80th birthday celebrations of Sir Peter Blake, one of the best-known British artists of his generation. His love of printmaking goes hand-in-hand with his belief that art should be accessible to a wide audience. With Blake’s paintings often fetching six figure sums, his original prints represent an opportunity to collect his work at an affordable price. Many of the UK’s most successful painters are also important printmakers. For London based artist Anita Klein, printmaking allows her to repeatedly alter and adapt an image, without having to start from scratch each time. Anita loves to experiment and try many techniques, finding that some printing methods, such as etching, lend themselves to delicate linear detail whilst screen-printing allows her to create bold and graphic images. 47

A series of academies taking place over the summer aim to help young people become healthier and happier as well as nurturing any aptitude at sport. Activities include dance, tennis and cricket - which is being supported by England cricket legend Andrew Flintoff Cricketer Andrew Flintoff is on a mission to help the country’s young people to improve their fitness. The former England player is hosting a Cricket Academy at venues not too far from you over the summer, aimed at improving the health and sporting skills of our nation’s children, to coincide with the London Olympics. The academies have been devised in partnerships with the Cooperative and Activate Sport. Andrew (affectionately known as Freddie on the pitch) told The Resident Magazine: “The academy has grown year after year and this year we have 60 venues. It’s great, as we get to see so many kids of different abilities enjoying the game, being active and playing with a smile on their face, all over the country. Cricket has given me so much, and I want to pass on my passion for the game to as many youngsters as I can. It would be great to produce the next star, but it is just as important to inspire someone who has never played the game before, to take up the sport and for it then to have a very positive impact on their life, regardless of how good they become.” By his own admission, Andrew’s first game of cricket, a quarter of a century ago, did not give too many clues as to what was to come. Standing out near the boundary ropes, a six-year-old ‘Freddie’ was filling in for a player who had dropped out of an under 13s match in Lancashire and had to make do with a handed-down Manchester United tracksuit instead of cricket whites. He also endured the ignominy of being out first ball when he eventually got to the crease. But his love of the game had nevertheless been ignited. Andrew added: “I never had the chance to play cricket when I was at school, we just played football. I was a centre-half and I was rubbish. But my dad played for a village side and I suppose I was always near a cricket field growing up. I watched the Ashes when I was a kid and always dreamed of playing for England, but never thought it would happen. Hopefully the academies can help

get kids interested in cricket themselves. If we find a star of the future, all well and good, but that’s not really what it is about. It is about getting the kids out there and enjoying the game. Having said that, the more enthusiasm we spread, the bigger pool of future stars we are likely to be able to choose from. Hampshire is the original home of cricket and Sussex, being next door, has been closely involved with the game as a result. There is a fantastic tradition of cricket in the county and we want to make sure the future potential is just as good.” The courses will be held in local school buildings across the South and the rest of the country during the summer holidays. Although Andrew himself cannot attend every one, he says, “I’d like to think I will have a big involvement. I will be very hands on when it comes to the creative side of things and I will be helping to select and train the teachers who will be delivering the summer courses. I try to visit every academy I can and I look forward to meeting players, coaches and parents at venues across the country in 2012.” Despite Andrew’s absence from the game due to knee surgery, he is on the road to recovery having taken part in the Dallaglio Cycle Slam to aid his rehabilitation. Flintoff joined former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio and the rest of his team for the fourth stage of the 2,800km charity cycle across Europe which, it is hoped, will help raise £1 million for Sport Relief and the Dallaglio Foundation. “I was delighted to be involved in the cycle, because raising money for these charities is fantastic” said Andrew. “It is beneficial on many levels as it lets me get involved in something that benefits Sport Relief and the Dallaglio Foundation as well as helping with my rehabilitation from knee surgery.” He will also be cycling to Greece later this year from London with his own foundation. “It’s going to be tough, but worth it!”.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. Place all of the cupcake ingredients, except the raspberries, into a food processor and mix until well combined. Add more milk, if necessary, to get the mixture to a soft drop consistency. Put one spoonful of the mixture into the cases, then follow with two to three raspberries, and another spoonful of mixture. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until risen and golden-brown. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and set aside to cool for 10 minutes. Then, for the icing, beat the butter in a bowl until light and fluffy. Carefully stir in the icing sugar and continue to beat for five minutes. Beat in the milk and food colouring. Decorate the cupcakes with the icing and why not top each cupcake with a raspberry?

Mix the gin and tea which should have brewed for approximately ten minutes and chilled for around half an hour in the fridge in a pitcher. Add all other ingredients (except the nutmeg) and stir. Take your time when you taste it and you will recognise the aroma and flavours of summer fruits, which is precisely why we’ve selected it as one of this season’s wines. Try it as an apéritif or with meaty fish such as tuna.

RAISE your glass James Hood believes drinking Champagne in moderation shows the drink the respect it deserves - but any excuse to open up a bottle will do Like many people, when I was growing up, Champagne was reserved for very special occasions. And I am really glad about that. Because now, years later, despite having worked hard enough to be able to afford the drink whenever the mood takes me, it remains a rather rare pleasure. A treat. Precisely what it should be. It is something I can look forward to or enjoy to celebrate the good times and, importantly, to fend off the bad. I am a real advocate for the latter. It might seem odd, but is there a better time for champagne than when life isn’t quite going to plan? I think not. I’ve been asked by people who aren’t as big a fan of the beverage why I love it so and frankly, I can’t put my finger on it. It is perhaps because of all the consumables within our reach, champagne is still something to be enjoyed sparingly, something that, in a world where everything is available to us at the touch of a button, is still consumed in moderation (unless you’re Kanye West.) And something to be respected. This final point was never so evident to me than last summer in Champagne - the French province in which the drink is produced. There I saw how it is made, from the picking of the grapes to the careful twisting of the bottle at an almost-upside-down 70 degree angle for weeks to remove the sugary sedemant. Hundreds of years of history and craft, still being used in cellars full of millions of bottles to create Champagne which is shipped around the world. Made from the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier grapes, it is thought to have been created during the 17th century, when bubbles accidentally appeared in a bottle of fermenting wine. Although Dom Perignon is rumoured to have invented it, it was in fact a British scientist, Christopher Merrett, who created the first production method some 30 years before in 1662. If, like me, you enjoy a glass or two, just reading the word will probably have you craving a glass. And you would be in luck. It’s the time of year when it’s perfectly acceptable to open a bottle (but then again, when isn’t it?). The sun is starting to shine, the polo matches are beginning, and wedding season is on its way. Maybe it’s the sensation of the tingling on the tongue, perhaps the hint of passion fruit, almonds or any number of complex combinations in the taste, or maybe it’s all just clever marketing. One thing is for sure; our love affair with Champagne has stood the test of time, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Andrew Crompton, owner of Cromptons at the Olive Branch, in Horsham, believes its popularity is not just

down to taste, but the sense of occasion: “Champagne has a magical quality and represents something special – good times, whether it’s a wedding, birthday or party. It usually involves happy memories”, he told The Resident Magazine. But it doesn’t have to be a special occasion for you to enjoy a glass of champagne. Apparently, it doesn’t have to be an occasion you’d want to remember either: In a previous issue of Vogue, Tamasin DayLewis commented that Champagne was equally as important for the “fending off, or acceptance of heartache or hard times, not just the emissary of fun”. Regardless of the reason for having a glass or two, Champagne stirs an emotion in all who drink it. Whether it’s over a new job, or an ex-boyfriend, for laughter or tears, something about it just feels great and a life (or fridge) without it is an emptier one. Perhaps its appeal lies in the fact that it can be drunk at any time of day without judgement. It seems just as appropriate for breakfast with a drop of orange juice as it does at 3pm with high tea. In fact, why not open one now? Remember – twist the bottle not the cork and always let it pop open gently into your hand (never in the air like Michael Schumacher please). Whether you like to drink it or not, you might consider investing in it. If you think the vintage variety is just a decadence to be reserved for Christmas and toasting Wills and Kate, think again; Particular years of the drink are becoming quite the investment opportunity after a surge in demand, so you may want to look into it next time you have some cash to stash in stocks and shares. Celebrity culture and Champagne’s growing popularity in the Middle East and Asia is making it a sought-after drink, and because it is polished off more quickly than fine wines, there is less of it around. There are however only certain brands that will get you a return, and you probably won’t find them on the shelf at your local shop. It must be vintage, and probably have the likes of Louis Roederer, Dom Perignon and Krug on the label. So if you haven’t put down the magazine yet to go and get yourself some, pick up a bottle on your next shopping trip. Whether it’s destined for the cellar, for your anniversary or for the next time a friend comes round for a cuppa, you’ll be glad you have it, and it will make your fridge look chic in the mean time. Remember, it’s there for you in the good times and the bad. Oh, and accept no imitations. 63

It’s hot right now Coffee has never been so widely consumed. Whether it’s your morning wake up call or an excuse to wile away a Saturday with friends, as a nation we are loving those little brown beans. But can you drink it with a clear conscience? Put the kettle on and let’s find out Coffee is hot right now. Both literally and metaphorically speaking. And never was it more evident than in Horsham, back in April. More than 3,000 people either living in or visiting the town voted in a competition to help The Resident find the shop or café that serves the ‘Best Cup of Coffee’. Now, 3,000 might not seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things. But in a small town, it is a sign of our love affair with those little brown beans. The Lounge, at The Company Hairdressers, on Middle Street was victorious - winning head and shoulders above the rest. And it’s not just Horsham where people are going crazy for a coffee fix. Although it may have been little more than the morning pick-me-up of choice for millions of people for decades, today it means serious business - with over 1.6 billion cups consumed every day around the world. In 20 years it has gone from the middle class cafetière (usually dusted off for a dinner party) to a coffee shop on every corner and evolved from Nescafé, to the takeaway varieties many of us struggle to pronounce. So what’s so great about coffee? Grab yourself a cappuccino and read on for a bit more about the little brown beans that have caused a big stir. Although coffee was introduced to the western world around 400 years ago, its origins date as far back as 800 BC. There are countless Arabian legends that tell of a powerful, black and bitter stimulant, which is believed to have derived from its use in medicine at the turn of the first millennium. Since then coffee drinking has become embedded in our culture and countless countries including Italy and Kenya have perfected its production. From our morning ritual on the way to work to a catch-up with friends, a cup of coffee has become part of a typical day. But it is not only the supermarkets and Starbucks that are doing a roaring (or should that be roasting) trade. The industry now provides an income for more than 100 million people worldwide, and many of them are living

in developing countries, relying on the exports that satisfy our caffeine fix for their livelihoods. It is second only to oil in the list of the world’s largest markets, and can mean that farmers and their families live self-sufficiently. Columbia in particular has been at the forefront of the development of coffee as an industry that provides independence for those involved in making it. With strict quality guidelines and communitydriven projects in place there, every Columbian cup of coffee represents ethical farming, and a long-standing philosophy shared by some 500,000 of its people. So with initiatives like those in Columbia, and the rise of Fair Trade produce in the UK, we can enjoy our daily cuppa with a clear conscience. But is it actually any good for us? For years, experts have warned us of the effects of too much caffeine. But more recent research has shown it could be just as beneficial to our health. Dietician, Dr Sarah Schenker (sarahschenker. com) believes it can reduce the risk of developing gallstones, colon cancer and liver disease as well as reducing the effects or development of Parkinson’s. Despite the view that we can now safely drink coffee in moderation without worrying about the potential health benefits, there is another, greater threat to our caffeine consumption; global warming. The changes in climate in regions that produce coffee has meant dry spells, short and intense periods of rainfall and may force farmers to move elsewhere. Not an easy feat logistically, or if land is not available. But there are procedures in place to make coffee farming more sustainable and organisations such as The Rainforest Alliance and the Fairtrade Foundation aim to increase social and environmental standards, helping to encourage efficiency and lower costs for those who rely on the industry. So why not go out for a guilt-free espresso now? Make mine a venti, double shot, extra hot caramel macchiato. Well, the latte is so last year. 65

TOPIARY TIPS There’s a name for those beautifully crafted evergreen trees and bushes it’s called Topiary, and Angus White from Architectural Plants in Nuthurst has some advice on getting it right

To (sort of) quote Malvolio in Twelfth Night : ³ ... be not afraid of architectural plants. Some are born architectural, some achieve architecture and some have architecture thrust upon them². Topiary is definitely the last of these three categories. It’s the ability to clip certain plants (usually evergreen with very small leaves) in to pleasing shapes. Forcing nature to submit to our will. The word Œpleasing invites a degree of subjectivity - some find privet clipped into the shape of a man riding a penny-farthing bicycle pleasing whereas others prefer gentle natural undulations of clipped yew. The blob - rounded, slightly flat topped, doughnut shaped - remains the most popular as far as sales at the nursery go. It’s an oriental twist on the European tradition of clipped balls which remain more popular than the other European tradition - the clipped cone or clipped pyramid. When it comes to formal arrangements of topiary, I find the cone certainly has its place but the rounded ball or blob is always easier to place and this is confirmed by us selling some ten times more balls and blobs than cones and pyramids. Without wishing to get too analytical about this, I notice that the enthusiasm that people show for trees when they’re old and domed is much greater than that shown for younger trees that still have their youthful spire-like form. They’re still young and vigourous and are thrusting themselves upwards towards the light. It¹s later on when they settle into comfortable maturity that they take on that lovely rounded look that everyone admires. Compare a young Scots Pine (looks like a

Christmas Tree) with an old and mature one with its mighty cloud like top. Think about it. I digress. Some tips on topiary: on the nursery and when doing our Creative Maintenance work in customer¹s gardens there are certain rules we observe. 1. In order to stop cross contamination, we always have with us a bucket of very dilute (5%) domestic bleach that we dip whatever tool we’re using in every few minutes. It cleans the tool and kills any fungal spores which are such a threat to our plants in this damp climate. Box blight is still widespread in Britain but at least if you observe this rule when clipping box, you will prevent it spreading on the tools the most common method. It’s all common sense really. 2. Use hand shears whenever possible. It¹s quiet, contemplative, amazingly fast once you get going and always leaves a better finish than any powered mechanical gizmo. We use (and sell!) some lovely shears from Japan (the home of topiary) made by Okatsune. Light and strong and a joy to use. 3. A personal plea : impose your will upon whatever you’re clipping and avoid the widespread tendency to clip too narrow and tall. Go for wide and low - it¹s so much easier on the eye. Every summer, for the past 30 years, Arundel has come alive with the sights and sounds of its annual festival. Read on to find out whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in store this time round

The Arundel Festival has been running for over 30 years and is now firmly established as one of the South of England’s premier Arts Festivals. This year’s festival will take place from Friday, August 17 until Monday, August 27 and the whole community of this picturesque town in West Sussex is involved. Amongst the many highlights of the 10-day Festival will be Shakespeare in The Collector Earl’s Garden, eclectic music and arts in Jubilee Gardens, hot-air balloon rides from the Meadows, The now famous Bath Tub Race on the river and the hugely popular Gallery Trail. The Festival will begin with a Folk and Country night at Jubilee Gardens, followed on Saturday by the ‘Festival Farmers Market’, and official opening with the Children’s Parade and raising of the flag. Ash Kent, festival organiser, said: “2011 was another great success, with an estimated 40,000 people coming to the town during its ten day period. With this huge amount of people comes a huge amount of responsibility and a small but staunch committee of volunteers has taken this on in recent times. This year, the ethos is one based around the belief that art comes in many forms, but can define and influence a community from grassroots upwards. We are excited about the inclusion of several new areas and events. The massively popular Arundel Bath Tub Race will be moved into the festival period and launched from the town. This event has attracted thousands of people in recent times and the festival committee members are very excited to see it return to the town. Last year nearly 40 entrants created one of the best ever and we hope to follow this with the Race starting in Town and heading, albeit slowly, upstream! Jubilee Gardens Performing Arts Stage, now in its 5th year, will also have a new look and feel. will be very varied this year, with the first weekend based around families, leading up to the final weekend of more bands and performers. Also, there will be several poetry readings and poets will be appearing through the festival. Added to all this is a variety of fantastic plays by Drip Action and the Arundel Players. Comedy nights and more plays will be showing at The Jailhouse. Both weekends will showcase street entertainment, and with the roads closed, this will create a truly unique atmosphere and carnival atmosphere. Words and music in private houses makes a return in style including the Hanover band. It seems particularly appropriate to hold Shakespeare at Arundel Castle – after filming took place there earlier in the year as part of the Shakespeare Festival to be broadcast on the BBC televisions cultural Olympiad during June/July . The Tempest and The Taming of the Shrew will be performed in The Collector Earl’s Garden. Arundel Festival has joined forces with the British School of Ballooning and Hot Air Balloon rides will be available. The balloon rides that will be sold will be valid for 12 months and during the Festival. The launch site will be once again in the meadows, by kind permission of The Duke of Norfolk, weather permitting there will be an area set aside next to the balloon launch site for visitors and the community to come bring a picnic, and watch the balloons launch, meet the balloonists, and perhaps have a tethered ride! I’m a girl who loves her heels. I love wedges, kitten heels, court shoes and of course, stilettos. Why? Because they make me took taller and more elegant, and, crucially, feel fantastic! Heels have been around for centuries and are adored by women around the globe. They are a must-have in any women’s wardrobe today as they add elegance to every outfit. Whether it’s a work uniform, a night out with the girls or even a trip out shopping, they can be worn for any occasion. They are versatile shoe, which is part of their appeal. STORY They began as a fashion trend, but as Charlotte Schroeter finds out, it is the way they make women feel that has helped them stand the test of time

So, what’s the story with stilettos? Where did the shoe come from, who designed it, and why are they so popular? Originally, only the heel of a shoe was referred to as a stiletto but this soon changed to refer to high heeled shoes which also had a pointed toe. Gradually the stiletto we know and love today evolved, with a more broad range of styles. To be defined as a stiletto, the heel usually measures in at around 1cm in diameter and about 8cm in height. The word in Italian means ‘dagger’, hence the thin point. The kitten heel is a term that refers to a similar shoe with a heel that is 5cm or less. Thin-heeled shoes first made an appearance back in the 19th century. Gradually, designers changed the look to meet demand and drive trends and the stiletto started to take off in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. During this time, the heels got higher, and skirts got shorter as women realised the elegant silhouette the style would create. So, who is responsible for bringing the muchloved shoe to the forefront of fashion? Two main names seem to keep cropping up, Roger Vivier and Salvatore Ferragamo. Frenchman Vivier designed shoes for Christian Dior which helped them become an overnight sensation and Italian shoe designer, Ferragamo, is responsible for inventing the thin metal rod that is in the heal of the stiletto. The ultra slim heel is adored by many women as it’s known for making them taller and making their figures appear even more feminine. Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe often wore the shoe but they became uncool in The Beatles’ era and thankfully sprung back into fashion at the end of the 1970s. 42 years later, they are still at the centre of the fashion world and worn by supermodels as well as your everyday woman. If we’re going to get technical about it, they push the weight onto the balls of your feet which means your body is more curvaceous and creates the illusion of longer legs. Gemma Faith, from West Sussex, is a senior manager at a 5 star hotel in London. She wouldn’t be seen dead without a pair of heels at the office and told The Resident Magazine: “Every girl looks better in a pair of high heels. They can really affect how you feel. And if you feel good you are more confident and that’s especially important if you’re at work. I don’t do flats.” Of course, not every woman can walk in stilettos. And personally I can understand why. But girls, they come in every colour under the sun and you should be able to find a height that suits your style and lifestyle. Cathedral Choir School The Governors of the Prebendal School, Chichester Cathedral’s Choir School, have given approval for an exciting new scheme for the school to expand into the adjoining property at 55 West Street from September 2012. Work on adapting the building has already begun. But there are plenty of other areas on people’s bodies that they want to improve. Mr Hurren told The Resident Magazine: “I do a combination of cosmetic surgery as a private surgeon and also a lot of work as an NHS surgeon, helping people return their bodies back to normal after breast and skin cancers. That’s the difference between the two - cosmetic surgery tends to be about taking a normal appearance or body and making improvements to it, making people look younger for example. My work with the NHS on the other hand helps people return to normal. Procedures I do as part of my private practice include breast enlargements, facial procedures such as eyelid surgery, tummy tucks, liposuction, removing moles etc. But one of the biggest areas of growth I have seen is in clients who need excess skin removed after losing a lot of weight.” If you’ve been thinking about having a procedure done yourself but don’t know where to begin, Jeremy believes that in most instances, your GP is a good place to start. He said: “Although some doctors don’t advocate cosmetic surgery, generally speaking, GPs are sensitive to the needs and feelings of their patients. And if there is something bothering them about a particular part of their body I would like to think that their GP would be

able to give them some advice on how to go about finding a good plastic surgeon.” That, of course, leads us to one of the most crucial questions of all - how do you find a reputable, trusted surgeon? Start by staying a little closer to home. “I would advise people to use their common sense when it comes to choosing a surgeon. For example a doctor based in a foreign country might be a risky choice because you can’t check their credentials easily. And if anything goes wrong, what can you do about it? It’s much better to choose a surgeon here and try if you can to choose one with the right qualifications who is a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) or with the letters FRCS (Plast) after their name. It’s not easy to find someone you can trust if it’s your first procedure, because obviously most plastic surgeons have a commercial interest in you choosing them. Finding someone with a good reputation is a good place to start.” Mr Hurren has more than 20 years’ experience as a plastic surgeon having qualified in 1987 and became an NHS consultant 11 years ago. He says his work is “highly rewarding” and believes that any critics of such surgery should speak to the people who have had it done. He added: “It has been a controversial topic, but I sit in the clinic talking to a constant stream of people who have had their lives changed for the better because of surgery. Some say they have improved confidence, others say they have been on their first holiday in years because they were so self conscious before. Of course it is important to remember it is still surgery and therefore there are risks, but on the whole, it has a positive impact on people’s lives.” For more information visit hurren.com

At first sight, driving along Steyning’s picturesque high street with its ample offering of interesting and varied shops intermingled with mouth-watering eateries, it’s easy to forget this rather refined Sussex gem was once a harbour, port and Saxon market town. There are no obvious signs Roman galleys then Saxon ships preceded today’s 4x4s or chirpy minis. The sea is some six or seven miles away, the River Adur meanders on the outskirts closer to Bramber and Beeding, and the nearest working port is Shoreham. Steyning nestles at the foot of the Downs and today is more popular for shoppers, walking holidays, tea and coffee houses, and of course events like the vibrant Steyning Festival and the annual Country Fair. But nonetheless, Steyning has a rich history and some wonderful architecture, ranging from thatched cottages through to Georgian town houses. Steyning Museum holds the key to learning more about the area’s history and fascinating characters like Cuthman – allegedly an Anglo-Saxon shepherd, church-builder and saint. The seasons bring out the very best in the rural and urban landscape – from snowcapped roofs and icicles hanging from the listed cottages in Church Street in winter, the abundance of pretty flowers and blossom across the town in spring, the sun-shimmering views to the Downs in the summer and the rich autumnal hues as the days get shorter. No wonder there’s always a plethora of dog walkers, visitors and hikers. For the talkers rather than walkers, Steyning has a fine selection of pubs, chic cafés and renowned restaurants. There’s something for everyone, from the traditional to the more sophisticated, to satisfy even the most discerning palate. Even the local fishmongers turns into a fish and chip take-away twice a week. There’s no excuse not to be fit and healthy here though – Steyning boasts its own leisure centre with a well-equipped gym, swimming pool and comprehensive sports facilities. Shops include some of the most delightful independent boutiques, florists, bakeries, hardware store, guitar shop, bookshop and Steyning also has its very own little mall – Cobblestone Walk, hosting a variety of quirky emporia well worth a visit. Until the Beeching ‘Axe’ in 1966, the town was served by a railway station and there are still one or two signs still identifiable on a walk along the River Adur down to Shoreham. On the opposite side of town, a more uphill trek leads to Chanctonbury Ring, once a hill fort then Roman temple on top of Chanctonbury Hill. Legends abound – one says the Devil created the Ring and can be summonsed by certain actions while there; another about increased

fertility if you sleep on the site overnight. Myths or not, it’s certainly a popular hiking destination. The famous ‘From Steyning to the Ring’ poem appears engraved for posterity in stone a little way up Mouse Lane, written by a soldier just before going into battle in the First World War and printed in the Daily News in 1916. Worthy of note too are the villages of Bramber, Beeding and Small Dole, which form part of the Steyning district. Each has its own notable character and charm, especially St Mary’s historic house and garden in Bramber and the remains of William de Braose’s once Norman motte and bailey Bramber Castle. As a Londoner by birth who had always lived in more urban settings, moving to the relative peace and quiet of Steyning was a joy. Having shops on my doorstep which would satisfy my everyday needs was also a bonus. There’s a wide variety of very active local clubs and associations for residents who choose to take part, including arts, photography and sports, and of course the wonderful countryside to explore. Traffic links in all directions are very good, allowing those running businesses or commuting to at least make valiant efforts to get where they need to go, trains and traffic notwithstanding! But one question remains: is Steyning a town or a village? This is the topic of many a debate over a drink or two in one of the local hostelries. Steyning is certainly big enough to call itself a small town while retaining a village feel (and sometimes, it has to be said, somewhat of a village mentality). The debate will continue though until someone comes up with the definitive answer. It is, nonetheless, a delightfully charming place in which to live and work, and once people move to Steyning, they rarely move away.

CELEBRATE SUMMER Steyning-style

This year, Steyning has plenty to celebrate. As well as Jubilee and Olympics celebrations, the town hosts its fifth annual festival

The festival runs from 26 May to 10 June and kicks off with the Children’s Parade on the first day. Local Schools got together for craft workshops and made sparkly t-shirts and crowns for the event. Over 850 tickets for Steyning Festival’s street party on Sunday 3 June have sold out! People have booked tickets from surrounding areas as well as Steyning and are all keen to get along to this lovely old market town and take part in the festival celebrations and enjoy a picnic. Local residents that haven’t been able to purchase a ticket for a seat will simply be there to soak up the atmosphere and pop into one of the local pubs, restaurants of cafes. Steyning Festival will be hosting a Sports Day on the beautiful grounds of the Cricket Club at the foot of the downs. Horsham Leisure Link and Steyning Athletics Club will be running a Mini Olympics and local sports organisations will provide entertainment and demonstrations. The towns Cuthman Wheelbarrow Race returns, so take you own wheelbarrow and try your luck. This is a free family event to all Steyning residents and surrounding towns and villages – all are welcome! The arts side of the festival has grown from strength to strength and covers the areas of Theatre, Music, Literature and Talks, Walks and Visual Arts. This year’s events include award winning Brighton and Hove Russian Choir performing a traditional Russian repertoire; A Conversation with Chris Cleave, author of The Other Hand and P.D. James, one of the most celebrated crime writers of our time. Now in her 10th decade, she will be talking about her latest novel, Death Comes to Pemberley, in which she

has woven together her love of Jane Austen with her mastery of the art of detective fiction. There are some fantastic events for children! The Theatre of Widdershins return to the festival and will perform The Elves and The Shoemaker, suitable for under 10 years old. This well known tale, made popular by the Ladybird Classic, uses a beautifully crafted set and colourful puppets, sublime music, a kaleidoscope of miniature shoes and a comic mouse - £6 a ticket. Sophia and the Snail is an inspirational show for ages 3 - 7 that looks at the importance of vegetables and how they grow – a fast and funny tale about one little girl’s journey towards overcoming her biggest fears – especially snails! Steyning Downland Scheme is organising some of the walks for the festival and their Conservation Morning walk is suitable for all the family. Roam the Rifle Range, a 2 mile walk, gives the opportunity of discovering its history over the last 120 years of its existence. One of the free events is Unplugged, where budding musicians and friends can sit around a fire in the woods, enjoy a sausage or two and listen to the sounds. The popular event, A Night at the Opera, presented by Music Theatre 2000, returns to the festival with a programme of arias, duets and ensembles to whet the appetites of both novices and newcomers. Singers include Adrian Powter who sung with Glyndebourne Festival and Touring Opera, Opera North and Carl Rosa Opera along with and Barry Clark who appeared in the original cast of Phantom of the Opera. The modern bachelor pad is all about simplicity. I believe for a good bachelor pad it is best to start out with a modern design, clean lines, no clutter. You want to create a good impression - one of being as clean and as organised as possible. Begin with the colour - blue is the most popular colour choice for men, but use it sparingly, either as an accent colour or soft tones rather than a bright blue covering every space. Classic choices are grey and brown, they work well with just about everything. You can add a contrast of red, but stay away from reds that are overly pink. Pillar box red works really well. If you can be persuaded to have a feature wall, look at the new textured wallpapers that are around. Texture will add depth to your scheme, and create a great backdrop to hang artwork or mirrors. When choosing a sofa – the bigger the better (as long as it fits in the room) with a large coffee table for all your mates to sit around and have room for their drinks. This is one place where you wont find a cushion in sight. But do ensure the sofa is comfortable, just because it looks great doesn’t mean it will feel great!

I haven’t forgotten the gadgets, but instead of having your XBox on the floor and your DVD player perched on top of the TV, why not purchase a large media unit which will rid you of all the clutter. Keeping each item on its own shelf will keep everything neat and organised. Flooring will very often be hard – either wood or laminate. You could look at vinyls that mimic wood – Karndean or Amtico are good choices. To give the room just a touch of warmth a rug would be a good addition. Textured natural carpets, such as sisal or coir are also a good choice. Think carefully about how you light your bachelor pad – not too little, and not too much. Table lamps will add atmosphere, as will uplighters and downlighters – mood lighting is what you should be looking for. And how about having it work by remote control? Men are very often unsure what to do about window treatments. To give them a masculine feel, opt for geometric prints, stripes or textured fabrics. Look at having eyelet curtains or roman blinds. Recently for a bachelor client of mine we hung panels of fabric, rather than curtains in neutral shades. And if you are in to your gadgets then why not purchase blinds or curtain tracks that work by remote control. If you are still unsure or uneasy about designing your bachelor pad, then you can always ask a female or more fashionforward friend for advice. Failing that - an interior designer will do the job!

interior designer Catherine Smith offers some top tips on designing a bedroom for the kids and says it can be as much fun for you as it is for your little darlings Children’s bedrooms are really fun to design, but as well as fun they need to be functional, full of storage and well, childproof. Finding an inspiring wallpaper or favourite colour is often a great starting point to inspire you and your child. There is an enormous range of wonderful wall coverings around and if the budget isn’t too tight then check out surfaceview.co.uk. They will digitally print wallpaper for the whole wall made to order to the correct size. They offer a fantastic range of stock images from favourite old comics, flowers and maps to name but a few and if you prefer, they will make a bespoke piece from an image you provide. We recently did this for a boy’s bedroom with an image from the comic Captain America, which looked amazing! Surface View offers a full hanging service too. If your budget is a little more limited, or you don’t want to spend too much money when you’ll probably be re-designing it again in a year or two, then the market for wallpaper is unlimited, I recently found a local Brighton-based company who have created a simple yet stylish wallpaper collection including cats, dogs and birdcages. Visit bainesandfricker. net for more. Painting and wallpapering is an inexpensive way to transform a room and can easily be changed when your child grows up. Window treatments such as blinds and curtains can be a little more expensive, so I tend to keep these simple. I will often use white fabric which will generally tie in with most schemes over time, but by adding a little colour with a braid or trimming it adds some interest and a bit of fun. Storage plays an enormous part in a child’s bedroom with all those toys to house and when space is limited then going up is often the best option. There are some great space saving ideas out there where you can utilise the space under the bed, with everything from shelving and drawers, to sleepover beds, to complete desk and sofa options, the possibilities are endless, but there can be downfalls when Mum is trying to change the bed linen on a bed so high up, or your child is a little afraid of heights having to

sleep with their nose almost pressed to the ceiling. This is where British company, StudyBed comes in. They have come up with a unique idea. For something a bit different try painting the drawer fronts of a chest in blackboard paint, it can give you a fun way of labelling what’s in them. With the colour scheme and furniture in place, the fun can really begin by accessorising your child’s bedroom. This part needs no boundaries because this is where you can introduce your child’s personality and they can make their stamp on the room. If you’re getting married this year, congratulations. Bridget James is sure that - you’ll live happily ever after. That’s only if you survive the wedding of course Well how much can we pack into one month... June not only boasts the Trooping of the Colour, the longest day and Wimbledon but this year also marks Queen Elizabeth’s 60-year reign on England’s throne. If you haven’t got your Jubilee plans on schedule by now my friends, you may be up the proverbial creek and waving that Union Jack on your lonesome. Amongst all that hectic planning, I am sure there is also the odd wedding creeping in this month. Traditionally June is the ideal time for the blushing bride to walk up that isle to meet her beloved. Named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and Jupiter’s wife, June has more than a head start on the marital calendar. After all, it’s the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and so promises at least one afternoon when you can possibly arrive and exit the church without being deluged in tons of rainwater. They say “a calm June, puts the farmer in tune” and so hopefully, also the band you’ve hired for the wedding reception. The business of getting married has come a long way from a quick ceremony at the local church followed up a knees up at the village hall. There’s the nail biting choice of venue, guests, caterers - to champagne or not to champagne. Not to mention THE DRESS. Now I cast my mind back to my own

wedding. For I too got married in June. We are now divorced, but don’t panic girls and don’t let me put you off... It was a time of immense pre planning stress but I have to say when it came to it I absolutely loved the entire day. My new father-in-law looked like he’d just come off a pheasant shoot, my mother looked like she’d been dressed by Vivienne Westwood on an extra experimental day and my maid of honour was inebriated before she even got to the service. And I can’t say, with any certainty, that her honour had remained intact from celebrations the night before. We had the reception at Amberley Castle, which did an amazing job of canopying their entire walled garden for us. It was truly magical and I felt like the belle of the ball - which every bride should feel on her wedding day. I’m sure I had roses somewhere in my bouquet. Roses are of special importance in June. In folklore any rose picked on Midsummer’s Eve or Midsummer’s Day will keep fresh until Christmas day – bye bye poinsettia. On Midsummer’s Eve young girls should scatter rose petals and say: Rose leaves, rose leaves Rose leaves I strew He that will love me Come after me now On Midsummer’s Day their true love will visit them. Just make sure he has enough money to pay the wedding caterers.
