Big Nibble heralded as best ever Thousands of visitors descended on Horsham at the weekend to enjoy the Big Nibble. Many of the traders on 40 local produce stalls reported record takings and some even sold out – a testament to the growing popularity of locally produced food and drink. Large crowds gathered on Saturday to watch open-air live cookery theatre, with demonstrations from top chefs using local ingredients from restaurants such as Restaurant Tristan, South Lodge Hotel in Lower Beeding and Ginger’s Kitchen, Partridge Green. Horsham’s Beer Trail attracted even more participants than last
year and East Street was packed with people taking advantage of the road closure to enjoy alfresco dining in the sun. Rarely has the town looked so busy.
been fantastic to ‘seeIt has so many local food producers take part ’ Lovers of fine old English vehicles braved the rain on Sunday to admire more than 20 classic English TVRs and Morgans and 30 Southdown buses in the town centre and at Hop Oast. Hundreds enjoyed free rides
around the district on the historic green buses. Specialist local produce stalls were again inundated with visitors, queues were seen from mid-morning as people collected tokens for the Nibble Trail, the Glastonbury Grans graced the town and children enjoyed a high five with Ringo, the district’s Olympic mascot. The second day of the Big Nibble coincided with the launch of Horsham’s Festival of Sound (see Page 22-23). PJ Aldred, Horsham Markets contract manager, said: “Horsham Markets were thrilled to work with Horsham District Council on this event. “It has been fantastic to see so many local food producers take part, in addition to our valued Horsham stallholders, cafés and restaurants who offer such a diverse range of fresh, local produce throughout the year. What a showcase for the town and district.” Cllr Roger Paterson, district council Cabinet member for the local economy, said: “This year’s Big Nibble was the biggest and best ever. Horsham residents and visitors clearly had a wonderful time. “What could be a better way of promoting the enjoyment and benefits of the wonderful choice of local produce grown, processed and distributed in our district?”

Lions roar to aid of Scouts A Scout hut which was closed due to asbestos is nearer to reopening thanks to the generosity of a local charity. The Billingshurst and District Lions Club has donated £5,000 to the Save Our Hut appeal of Billingshurst Scouts and Guides, most raised at the Lions’ bookshop in Jengers Mead. Ken Johnson, of Billingshurst Lions, said: “All in the Lions Club are so pleased to have been able to assist the Scouts and Guides in their hour of need and are impressed with the way all connected have come together to overcome a substantial problem.” Richard Pope, of Billingshurst Scouts and Guides, said: “Thank you to the whole of the Lions Club for their efforts in raising and donating the very generous sum of £5,000 to our appeal. It really has been a significant boost.
We have been ‘overwhelmed by the
generosity of the local community
’
“The repair and refurbishment work so far, which includes removing all the asbestos and the rebuilding of the toilet facilities, has cost us nearly £50,000. “This is a huge sum of money for us to find – something we could not have achieved without the fantastic support we have received from our local community, including individuals,
businesses and community organisations. “We started our Save Our Hut campaign with a show of strength in the Spring and we followed this up with a series of fundraising events. “The next event will be on Sunday at Billingshurst Leisure Centre, where Willie Austen and the Ron Green Big Band will be performing, with all proceeds going to our campaign. “We have been overwhelmed by
the generosity of the local community, within Billingshurst and from further afield, who have made donations to our campaign, helped us with our fundraising, or organised fundraising events on our behalf. “We were also very fortunate to be awarded a grant by Horsham District Council to help with the toilet refurbishment work. “We will soon complete the first phase of the repairs, which will
allow our units, Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows, to use the Scout hut again for some of their activities. “We still have a lot of work to do to restore the main hall, including building a new ceiling and installing permanent lighting and heating, so we are continuing with our fundraising activities. But we are confident of having the Scout hut fully refurbished within a few more months.”

Ping pong in park An outdoor table tennis table has been installed in Horsham Park, near the Conservatory Café, for open access by the public. Horsham Table Tennis Club worked with Horsham District Council and Denne Neighbourhood Council to secure funding and permission for the new table. Equipment will be available to purchase or hire from the reception at the Pavilions in the Park or people can bring their own. The club hopes the table will increase the visibility and profile of the sport before, during and after the 2012 London Olympics. Ian Ford, from the district council, said: “Table tennis is a game you can enjoy from eight to 80 years of age and one which offers an enjoyable way to keep fit, socialise and master new skills. “Whatever motivates people to play, it is expected that the outdoor table tennis table will become a popular feature of Horsham Park.” For further information, contact Mr Ford on 01403 215634 or ian.ford@ horsham.gov.uk

£45k to bring posters to life Matthew James News Editor
matthew@the-resident.co.uk
Knowing that he was about to die, saddler William Albery gave to the town of his birth his collection of posters spanning 150 years. Sixty years later, thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £45,000, the Friends of Horsham Museum are embarking on an ambitious project to make these posters relevant to today’s generation. In the past, such posters proliferated throughout the ancient market town of Horsham, relevant for just a day or one event before being torn down and forgotten. But thanks to the foresight of Albery and others, more than 1,800 of the posters were kept.
Now the Friends will let them speak to a new audience – whether schoolchildren studying mass communication, design or literature, or clubs and societies that have vague recollections of past glories. More than 250 posters will be physically preserved and the entire collection catalogued to produce a photographic and digital archive.
Not just hot air
Our project will ‘generate interest in our local community ’
The annual Charity Hot Air Balloon Festival will take place at Wisborough Green from today (Friday) to Sunday. All money raised will be donated to Shooting Stars and CHASE, the nowcombined Children’s Hospice charities. Weather permitting, pilots from as far afield as Ireland and Italy will take off about 25 balloons from the Green and surrounding fields.
Networking with schools, clubs and societies, the Friends will develop and promote the skills of those researching the stories behind the posters. The stories will form the backdrop to websites, exhibitions, talks, publications and workshops. Jonathan England, chairman of the Friends of Horsham Museum, said: “This exciting project enables the posters that William Albery gave to Horsham Museum to reinvigorate the local community. “Just as television programmes such as Who Do You Think You Are? stimulate interest in the history of an individual, our project will generate interest in our local community. We could not do this without the Heritage Lottery grant.” Stuart McLeod, of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “This poster collection provides a unique window onto community life in Horsham that will now be opened for everyone with an interest in local history.”

Macmillan Cancer Support is asking everyone in Horsham district to help make its flagship fundraising event the biggest ever. People will hold coffee mornings in their homes, workplaces or community, asking for donations in return for drinks and cakes as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. The event will officially take place on Friday, September 30, but Macmillan says it is happy for people to hold events on a day that suits them. Fundraising manager Mandy Kendall said: “What better way to toast Macmillan than to sign up and get together with friends, eat cake, raise a glass or mug and have fun while helping to raise vital funds. “The great thing about this event is that you can put your own twist on it and make sure it works for you. “Whether it’s a coffee morning at work, an afternoon tea party with the girls or a lively curry night at the rugby club, each World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event will help Macmillan make a real difference to people affected by cancer.” For more information, visit www. macmillan.org.uk/coffee or phone 0845 6021246.

A senior representative of West Sussex Fire and Rescue will give a presentation at the meeting, in the Goodwood Room at County Hall North, Chart Way, Horsham (7pm). Cllr Brad Watson, chairman of the committee, said: “We hope to be able to gather some useful feedback, which can be included in the overall Fire and Rescue Service consultation that finishes on October 6.” The committee will also hear an update on the East Street pedestrian enhancement scheme and decide which organisations receive community initiative funding.

Venue is MORE TH>N adequate A new venue and September showers didn’t stop teams from local companies showing their colours for St Catherine’s Hospice. The annual Dragon Boat Festival was moved to Brooklands Park, Worthing, because there was not enough water at Knepp Castle, Shipley. But it was business as usual on the lake as Crawley-based CGG Veritas retained its crown. More Than a Dragon, from Horsham-based MORE TH>N, finished as runners-up. Sarah-Jane Smith, of More Than a Dragon, said: “My husband lost his father four years ago and he spent the last six weeks of his life in the care of the hospice. “Getting a team together is a small way that we can give something back to St Catherine’s, to thank them for all the care they provide to local people.

A poem penned by 14-year-old Miles Edwards has been published in a new anthology, Best of Enemies/Best of Friends (Hodder Wayland Publications). Four more poems by the Christ’s Hospital pupil will be published in different books this year, earning him £25 for each. Miles, who wrote his first poems when he was five, said: “It’s nice to write something down on paper which, no matter what anyone else says, is the right answer for you.” John Herbert, head of English, said: “Christ’s Hospital has a poetic heritage few schools can match, with poets such as Leigh Hunt, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Charles Lamb, Keith Douglas, Francis Warner and Kenneth Blunden among our Old Blues. “It’s a heritage we are proud to keep alive with a broad spectrum of tuition and mentoring for aspiring writers. “Miles has participated in our Junior Creative Writing Society and been published in the school’s Outlook magazine.”

No need to cry Nine months of green-fingered dedication were judged at the White Horse Inn, Maplehurst, as almost 60 exhibits were displayed. Paul Lusty was the winner with an onion just shy of 2lb. A difficult onion-growing season was not helped by dogs digging up one competitor’s onions 10 minutes after they were planted and a cat jumping onto a seed tray on a window sill. Pub regular Keith King supplied an onion of 4lb 9oz for the guess-theweight competition, raising £110 for St Catherine’s Hospice.

Each competitor swam 400m in Southwater Lake, then cycled 18.5km from Southwater to Coolham via Brooks Green and back up the A24, and ran twice around the park, a distance of 3.8km. Jennie Doyle, from Horsham Amphibians, said: “The event had the highest number of spectators ever and I’m sure this was in some part due to your article last week. “Luckily the rain held off all morning and was only felt by a few competitors at the end, although the prize giving was completely drowned. “The competitors and their supporters are hardy people and were able to see a local team, Fish + 2, awarded the overall prize with a

Firefighters cut a woman out of a car after it crashed about 30m into a field next to the A24. The woman, in her 50s, was driving a Citroen southbound when it left the road between the Southwater roundabout and the Buck Barn crossroads at about 2.15pm on Tuesday. She was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, suffering from chest and stomach pains, but her condition was not said to be life threatening. Sussex Police and firefighters from Horsham and Crawley attended the scene, along with the Sussex Air Ambulance and two other ambulance crews. No other vehicle was involved in the crash.

Unfortunately, the current approach to the country’s economic situation has been to target the most vulnerable, rather than those who created the problems in the first place (the banks) and those who can afford to pay (taxavoiding companies and conglomerates). Four new Year 7 pupils at Warden Park School, Cuckfield, wait for the 86 bus at Cowfold this week
Stewart Whitehead Holm Oaks, Cowfold
If you can not get to us at our shop, we can arrange home visits.
An open letter to Nick Herbert, MP for Arundel and South Downs. I know I am becoming quite a frequent correspondent to your office on a number of issues, but I would like to ask for your support on one very local issue. As a resident of Cowfold, I am very aware of the importance of the number 86 bus to people who are not able to travel by car – in particular schoolchildren who attend Warden Park secondary school, Cuckfield, and elderly people who need to travel to Haywards Heath for hospital appointments etc. It is a vital public service for our rural village, which does not have easy access anywhere except by road. The 86 bus route was earmarked for closure in the cuts programme identified by West Sussex County Council, but following a very strong and effective campaign by villagers it has been given a reprieve until April. During this period a team of officers has been given the brief of working with villagers to help identify alternative ways of arranging a bus service which will meet the villagers’ needs. While this is very laudable, I am of the view that these cuts are not at all necessary – even though the myth that they are has been perpetuated by the current government and local council. I also believe the council has a

Throughout September, local Salvation Army members, friends and volunteers will be collecting to raise vital funds for the annual appeal, which supports the Salvation Army’s wide and diverse programme of life-changing social and community work. Collectors will be going door to door throughout Horsham and Crawley, and 100 per cent of all donations made to the appeal will help people in need. This year the theme for the annual appeal is ‘mending broken lives’, illustrating the life-changing impact that unconditional Christian love, practical support and professional help can have on people who come into contact with us. This has been a particularly hard year for many people who have had to cope with job losses, poverty and loneliness. The role of the Salvation Army is more important than ever.
With cuts to the public funding we receive, public donations to our annual appeal are vital to ensure we can continue our work in mending broken lives – services such as our Lifehouse support and accommodation centres and our care homes and day centres. Please watch out for official annual appeal collectors who all carry a permit, which can be produced on request, and who will only be asking for cash donations (using blue Salvation Army donation envelopes and sealed Salvation Army collection tins). Donations can also be made through our centre at Booth Way, Horsham RH13 5PZ. If you have a few hours to spare and would like to support the annual appeal by delivering or collecting envelopes, we’d love to hear from you. Thank you in anticipation of your generous response. God bless you.

A risk of extra road casualties assume at all times of the day. The entrance to the junior school is directly opposite the secondary vehicular access point for construction vehicles! This will significantly increase the risk of pedestrian and cyclist casualties and accidents, and I am referring it to the Department of Transport for further advice. Every morning, traffic is backed up onto the Cedar Drive roundabout – the proposed main entrance for construction vehicles. Any further vehicle volume will cause chaos. Please can it be explained how pedestrian and cyclist safety risks and congestion issues will be mitigated? Alan Hallowes Via www.the-resident.co.uk
Riot debate continues I should like to thank Mr Mark Ramey for responding to my recent letter to you on the subject of ‘the riots’. All I can add to Mr Ramey’s rather intemperate letter is to counsel him on the virtues of actually reading what my letter said before leaping into print, something I am surprised to have to ask a teacher to do. Because I hold him no grudge, I shall be

I’m writing about the proposed development of the west of Southwater by Berkeley Homes. I have lived in the village for 20 years and don’t want to see our fabulous countryside destroyed. An angle not yet picked up, as far as I can see, is around the risk associated with construction traffic and child pedestrians attending the two schools in Southwater. The majority of children and parents walk, drive or cycle along the Worthing Road, from all parts of the village, north and south. Construction vehicles will be travelling in both directions along Worthing Road, I

Fun-day boost for Roller Fund Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club and the Shelley Arms raised £335 for the club’s Roller Fund and £50 for the Shelley Fun Day.
The money came from a fun day at the cricket club, involving a ladies’ stoolball game and men’s T20 cricket, won by the pub and club respectively.
How Clive avoided air ambulance! Business boss Clive Hancocks walked the 97-mile West Highland Way, helping to raise more than £1,300 for charity. The director of Mortgage Solutions, Horsham, joined Chris WeberBrown in a week-long trek from near Glasgow to Fort William. Donations will help Chestnut Tree House, at Poling, near Arundel, the only children’s hospice in Sussex. Mr Hancocks said: “When Chris and I arrived in Scotland, two things that we were concerned about were the weather and the ‘midges’. However, apart from one deluge of rain that was like a monsoon, it was fine throughout. “This is the fifth long-distance walk we have done. It was certainly the most challenging and not for the fainthearted. “The whole of the walk along Loch Lomond, beautiful as it was, was just honed out of rock with very few discernible paths. Every foot had to be placed carefully, so you didn’t end up phoning for the air ambulance! “We walked anything from 12 to 18 miles a day. It is certainly beautiful up there, but the walk has to be respected. I was glad to see the finish line.”

Not to be confused with the much larger East Grinstead roughly 20 miles away, West Grinstead is a hamlet with its old station a mile away. It wasn’t trade that attracted passengers here, but the countryside’s beauty. An impressive footbridge and two considerable waiting shelters hint at the potential West Grinstead had for Summer visitors. Former station master Ken Bartlett remembers visitors from Brighton travelling up the line in the Sixties to pick primroses before taking them home to keep or even sell. Some would go to the nearby Knepp Castle, where former visitors included royalty such as Kings John, Henry III, Edward II and Richard II. These passengers are thought to have provided the area around Needs Bridge, between Partridge Green and West Grinstead, with numerous apple and pear trees as a result of throwing their cores out of carriage windows. As Chris Gammell put it, birdsong was more frequently heard at West Grinstead than the puffing of engines, clatter of wheel or tooting of horn. But it was crucial to locals. The station provided a considerable commuting service for workers heading north to London or south to Brighton. And students had to get from West Grinstead to Collyer’s in Horsham, Steyning Grammar and Shoreham Grammar. The waterway passing through West Grinstead had to be abandoned 35 years after the station’s arrival, such was its popularity. Nevertheless, West Grinstead had not always received such positive attention, with plans in 1861 and 1864 seen as wildly optimistic. Links to Hardham and Haywards Heath were scrapped due to the lack of significant population areas along the proposed line. But animal traffic kept West Grinstead busy. A cattle-loading bay was situated at the north end of the station, but the presence of the National Stud in West Grinstead for many years meant the horse box dock was of great importance. Some animals were less welcome than others. Rats were not the most desirable of companions for the late Victorian passenger, so one platelayer took matters into his own hands and kept ferrets to deal with the problem. Pigeons were one of the many creatures to grace West Grinstead, but not for the same reasons as many. Instead they carried messages in World War II, from the American and Canadian troops who were based nearby. RK Greenwood, son of the station master, would wave to pilots from the station footbridge, but one day this brought tragedy. The pilot was

German and an engine driver was killed. The station master for Southwater, West Grinstead and next week’s station of focus, Partridge Green, fulfilled his duties from West Grinstead, but these were temporarily disrupted in the war by the Rail Transport Officer (RTO). The RTO ensured troop movements took priority at West Grinstead station, but normality was largely retained on the roads with buses regularly running. This may have encouraged some passengers to look elsewhere for their transport needs.
station provided ‘aThe considerable commuting service for workers heading north to London or south to Brighton
’
Like many stations along the Steyning Line, West Grinstead struggled in turning over profit – but unlike some others, there was no great defining moment that condemned the station to closure. To many, it was a considerable shock that the Beeching axe could even threaten to strike West Grinstead. The hamlet had few residents, but it was a vital link for rural people visiting more populated areas. The degree of importance the station held to many was evident in its various best-kept station awards and can today be seen in the renovated carriage standing on one of West Grinstead’s platforms. A sign has been erected and information on the Steyning Line can still be found within the carriage. The old station master’s house remains off the A272, but the small signal box and station building have since been demolished. And the nearby Tabby Cat Inn, visited regularly by station workers, is now a Little Chef. It isn’t just the station’s physical existence that is consigned to history, but the practices that went on within. Gone are the days of using indelible pencil, wet tissue and blotting paper to make records. Gone too is the single needle telegraphing device from the 1920s that former booking master Bernard Holden remembers using before telephones were accessible to the station worker. Though a little simplistic, West Grinstead station served a loyal passenger base. Its loss is a sad reminder of the hectic times we now live in.

As a child I remember the soaring happiness and unmitigated joy of breaking up for school summer holidays. The ecstasy of running out of the school gates and not looking back, secure in the knowledge that all the formality and order would, for six whole weeks, be substituted for sunny freedom and spontaneity. This magical state would continue unabated until you had reason to go into town and then your blissful state would evaporate like steam in a shower. For there before you, emblazoned on almost every retailer’s window, are three words to strike fear into the hearts and minds of the young summer Bohemian…`BACK TO SCHOOL`. Wherever you go, whatever you do, those words haunt you like some kind of evil head teacher intent on luring you back into the wax floored, disinfected institution of educational pain and suffering.
Having time out ‘reminds you of why we work ’

Let’s hear it for letters! Dee Blick’s second book, The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Book, has made it to the top 150 titles on Amazon.co.uk. Here, exclusively in The Resident, the author and marketing guru continues her series of excerpts. This week, with more tips on how to write effective sales letters Dee Blick www.theblickblog.co.uk
Don’t write your sales letter in isolation concerning yourself only with presenting an attractive and well laid out document. It must contain substance and be relevant to the readers. Spend time identifying and understanding your audience and supplement this with some competitor research. Although we have covered the importance of competitor research in the previous chapter I would like to reinforce some of those points again relating them specifically to your sales letter. You must identify your audience. Before you can write your sales letter, you need to identify the groups of people that you want to communicate with. As discussed in Chapter 1 this can be a broad or narrow spectrum that includes; cold prospects - people yet to do business with you; warm prospects - people interested in what you offer but yet to buy; lapsed clients
– people that have bought from you in the past but not recently; existing clients - you may want to segment existing clients depending on what they buy from you, when they buy and their value; Influencers - people who can recommend you to potential new customers...trade associations, buying groups, membership organisations etc. You must be clear about who is going to receive your sales letters because you’re not going to write the same letter to each group. The message may be the same, but each letter should be tweaked to reflect the differing needs of each target audience. Once you are clear about your target audiences stand in their shoes and appraise your business through their eyes. If you are not writing from your customer’s point of view, your sales letter will fall at the first hurdle. People are not interested in what you want they want solutions to their needs. Find out what your prospects or customers already know about your products or services. If you’re not sure, pick up the
phone and speak to a handful. Explain that you want to find out more about their needs and what influences them to buy the products or services that you supply. If you don’t have accurate answers to these questions, your sales letter may offer too much or too little information and be focused in the wrong direction. Find out what’s happening in the market place in which your prospects and customers operate. People are influenced in their purchasing decisions by their own prosperity and the underlying trends within their marketplace. You may need to focus on demonstrating how you deliver value for money. Carry out some competitor research. This is not as onerous as it may initially appear. In all likelihood, the people that you are targeting will also have some knowledge of what your competitors offer, even if it’s a bit sketchy. However, as covered in Chapter 2, shy away from using the word unique. Your letter will not be lacking if you
don’t pepper it with unsubstantiated superlatives. Instead, acquaint yourself with a handful of competitors before writing your letter. Visit their websites; engage in a spot of mystery shopping and compare your respective offerings. Are your products cheaper, faster, and easier? Are they more reliable? Are they the best performing, recommended by experts? Do they offer the best value? Have you won awards or been accredited for your services? Do you offer unconditional guarantees? Do you hold the highest possible qualifications in your sector? Have you amassed experience that’s hard to find elsewhere? If the only tangible outcome of this exercise is to make you realise that you are offering an excellent product or service, it will have been a success.
Time now to evaluate your most popular benefits. If you can focus on three key benefits this is usually more than enough to write a great sales letter. Will an offer trigger activity? An offer is something extra, something over and above the product or service that you’re promoting in your sales letter. It’s designed to prompt the reader to act immediately before they forget or are distracted by another business. It must be appropriate and appealing to the recipients. They will be unimpressed by a cheap gimmick. However, don’t believe that every letter sales you send must include an offer. In some cases an offer may not be appropriate or financially possible. Winning combination for cupcake company
A sales professional who works in the banking sector has teamed up with her mum, a star cupcake baker, to form a new business. Poppy’s Cupcakes was created by Laura Bristow and mum Sue Scott when the pair realised they could join forces and combine their skills. As well as helping with cake decorating, Laura takes care of sales, orders, marketing and business-related tasks, while Sue bakes in her kitchen – a workspace which has been approved by Horsham District Council. Laura works four days a week in her other job and has three young children under the age of eight. She said: “We felt there was a demand for a really good quality cupcake baking business as they are more popular now than ever before. Together we work really well. I have a good business sense and am experienced
A mother and daughter have joined forces to form a baking business that’s proving to be a sweet success working in sales and marketing, and mum makes amazing cakes. It’s a winning combination.” Poppy’s Cupcakes offers quality cupcakes for any occasion, available to order via the company’s website, phone, email and using Facebook and Twitter. The business has grown through word of mouth and referrals from happy customers. Laura has also established an effective online strategy for the company, which has helped them gain valuable exposure for its website in search rankings. The businesswoman added: “I think first and foremost we have a great product that people love. But our website has really helped. We hired Dan Purchase at BritWeb to create the look and feel of the site, design a logo, build a brand identity and achieve success on search engines like Google. It’s been a very important part of
our business plan and success so far.” As well as using the internet and social media, Laura has also put in the hours to get her new business off the ground. The ‘mumpreneur’ works in the evenings, at weekends and even takes cupcake orders on her lunch breaks while at her day job. Laura and Sue are preparing for National Cupcake Week, which celebrates baker’s creativity and passion and runs from September 12 to 18. The pair also has plans to develop their business further. Laura told The Resident: “We hope to grow as a company, and we aspire to be as big as companies like Kate’s Cakes. We know we have a good, high-end product, so with the right planning and hard work, we can make a success of it. We want to take over the world with cupcakes!”

Christmas Party Guide
Don’t wait until it’s too late to book for your Christmas bash Gone are the days of the office Christmas party where the boss opens a case of wine and dims the lights to the sounds of a-ha.
And sadly we’ve done away with the chance to kiss our crush under the mistletoe and end up in the stationery cupboard.
These days, the company’s festive bash is a more sophisticated affair, and every year they seem to get bigger and better. Thankfully, The Resident has created this handy guide of local venues that are hosting Christmas parties. Here you will find all the information you need when choosing where to celebrate the holiday season with those you spend most of your time with (tragically). Whether it’s for a small dinner with a select few, a big old boogie with your colleagues (hopefully this time to Girls Aloud instead) or a larger extravaganza complete with crystal and crackers, pick your party from this lovely selection. And then all you need to worry about is what to wear. They get booked up really early so don’t wait to book! Or you’ll end up back at the office with a paper cup and some party poppers.
Come to Slinfold for an experience to remember, and to Celebrate your Christmas in Style

Comedy with a side of sponge Gig Guide Horsham Area
Ahead of his performance in Horsham, comedian and ventriloquist Paul Zerdin talks to James Hood about his love of entertaining, and our love for his spongey sidekick Sam James Hood Entertainment Editor
james@the-resident.co.uk
Paul Zerdin is a born entertainer. Not only has he travelled the world with his co-stars (puppets Sam, Albert and Baby) performing his comedy act, but his mum and dad were both in the biz too. “I am the son of a couple of show offs”, Paul said. “My mum was a presenter and my dad was a producer, both for the BBC, so my sister and I spent a lot of time in studios when we were growing up. When I showed a knack for entertaining friends and relatives, they didn’t exactly do much to discourage me.”
used to be ‘aThere rather creepy
association with puppets. I wanted to make them fun.
’
Despite a talent for making people laugh, Paul says that he didn’t have his (now hugely successful) career all mapped out when he started. “I didn’t have any grand plan. I just began by doing magic tricks and absolutely loved the Paul Daniels show. And it all went from there. “When I was given a book on ventriloquism at the age of 15 I learnt the skills I needed and enjoyed the combination of acting, using puppets and incorporating humour. It was perfect for me.” It is this perfect mix of comedy with puppets that has made Paul Zerdin a household name. He is a regular on TV and Royal Variety Shows,
following his big break on GMTV and has appeared on programmes such as Jason Manford’s Comedy Rocks. Paul is currently on tour around the UK performing his ‘Sponge Fest 2011’ show with his three trusty sidekicks, one of which is the loveable but cheeky, Sam. “If I go to the supermarket, no one really cares. If Sam goes, he gets mobbed”, Paul told The Resident. The comedian’s success today is a far cry from where he began, honing his craft doing magic tricks and comedy for guests at private functions, working on cruise ships, in comedy clubs and working men’s clubs. And although he was well educated, during his GCSEs, the comedian preferred to spend his time earning money. Paul said: “I worked really hard. I got an agent and booked jobs anywhere I could get them. I then decided to focus on the ventriloquism. I found that people, especially adults, really enjoyed the mix of comedy with some puppets, as opposed to a ventriloquist throwing in a few jokes. “There used to be a rather creepy association with puppets. I wanted to make them fun. And as a huge fan of The Muppets, I wanted to incorporate puppets that people would love into my act. That is how Sam came about.” It’s a formula that has worked well for Paul so far. His work has seen him travel the globe performing and the pairing of clever stand up comedy with Sam and Co has proven a hit with a largely adult audience. The star added: “What I do is first and foremost about comedy. Although I work with puppets, it’s a predominantly adult set for people who love a good laugh.” Fans may soon be able to enjoy the comedian’s act from the comfort of their own living rooms. He is currently developing a TV sitcom using

First ever Festival of Sound hits Horsham Rachael Pratt Entertainment Reporter
Horsham saw the arrival of a brand new charity music event in aid of the Dame Vera Lynn Trust on Sunday, September 4, with 31 live bands covering six of the town centre’s most popular areas.
Around the town, small stalls were set up under marquees, giving the town a festival feel. Vintage buses, comedy grandma’s dancing on trolley cases, local produce tastings and music made the day a winner. The event kicked off through a slight drizzle, and over at the cosy and intimate acoustic stage on East Street solo singer ‘Chelle Dean had
Monikers on the Bandstand
whacked on her sunglasses joking to the crowd: “It’s to try and beckon the sun out!” The rain didn’t stop supporters for ‘Chelle huddling under umbrellas – she added: “I’ve got friends down here today but there are people I don’t recognise too. It’s great of them to come out in this weather”. Word of Mouth played at the Jazz, Soul and Funk stage down at Pirie’s Place where singer Elsie wowed the crowd with her soulful voice and performed covers such as ‘Midnight Hour’. Featuring saxophone, keyboard, drums, guitar and bass, it was a big arrangement, but the environment was quite chilled - the audience sat at tables with beers, tapping their feet. Keyboardist of the band, Kingsley, said: “I had loads of fun playing today. This should be an annual thing. Brighton has its festival and so do other towns, so why shouldn’t Horsham?” Five-piece band Tied to the Mast really rocked out in Market Square a large gathering from kids to oldies were joined together for some alternative music. The band, who have been together for two years, kept up a very lively atmosphere and had

people moving. Guitarist and vocalist of the band Lee Martin said: “The crowd has been very good, and really welcoming. We would definitely do this again.” No Way Out created a buzz around the Shelley Fountain, with hard-core fans as well as families waiting in anticipation for the classic rock to begin while over at the band stand, Monikers welcomed the spectators with indie covers and Cardinal Sin & The Preachers performed blues with harmonica and guitar; the trio showed blues is still entertaining and a winning genre. Collectors for the charity weaved around the crowds throughout the day and onlookers generously spared
some money for the worthy cause the bands were playing for. Sharon Dow, organiser of the event, said: “Appreciations go to the talented bands and the people of Horsham who braved the weather with special thanks to the committee members and volunteers. “To my husband, the sponsors, Tanbridge House School’s charity project and the restaurants donating food to the volunteers, ‘thank you’. You’ve all helped to get us closer to that £100,000 target for the Dame Vera Lynn Trust. Sharon added: “Hopefully next year, Festival of Sound 2012 will be bigger, better and sunnier!”

Ornament Tournaments Declaring the rock stage at Shelley Fountain well and truly open were Ornament Tournaments - a trio who describe their music as “no nonsense rock”. Their compositions were impressively executed, and possessed some unconventionally intriguing instrumentation and melodies. Although the adverse weather conditions limited the size of their audience, it did not prevent this indie-rock three-piece from delivering a superb performance.
Hollows of Venus With the torrential downpour ceasing prior to their appearance on the rock stage, Hollows of Venus were the ideal band to enjoy in the newly emerging sunshine. Unleashing some sublime renditions of numbers by the likes of Guns ‘N’ Roses, Queen and blink-182 (as well as a phenomenal Led Zeppelin medley), frontwoman Tara Swain Petty pulled off every astonishing note with ease, while the rest of the band proved their salt as supremely skilled musicians. As a direct result of their continuous sterling live reputation, Hollows
The Last Carnival
Of Venus played to a sizeable audience as they brought the day’s rocking proceeding into full swing.
No Way Out With Retro Katz sadly cancelling their slot on the rock stage, it was up to their replacement No Way Out to save the day. Playing a set that consisted heavily of AC/DC covers, this badass and beardy sextet took the generic conventions of your average ‘covers band’ stereotypes, and kicked them into oblivion. Tearing through their set list with tenacity and fearlessness, the band’s musical energy was a marvel to behold, as well as the bond between dynamic frontman Pete H and the everexpanding audience. Judging by the extremely positive reception of No Way Out’s performance, it is almost a certainly that this isn’t the last that Horsham has seen or heard of No Way Out.
Dead Empire With the two covers bands that preceded them having both gained very positive responses, the pressure was on for Dead Empire to deliver their original material flawlessly and with
expertise. Luckily, for the band and the crowd, their hard-hitting grunge rock hit the spot, as the Burgess Hill-based quintet’s crushing riffs exploded from the speakers towards the drawn-in throng of spectators. While such music, influenced by bands such as Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam, may have darkened the mood surrounding the rock stage, it did not extinguish the high spirits of those attending. Embracing a somewhat superhuman level of power in their composition, while headbanging lead singer Chris Bowden earned a true ‘rockstar’ status, you can guarantee that Dead Empire left the Festival Of Sound with a hefty number of additions to their fan base. The Last Carnival The Last Carnival brought a close to the festivities as the sun finally decided to stay, and justified their headline slot with a polished and highly professional performance. Singer Russ Williams unashamedly enjoyed their catchy, rock/pop tunes just as much as the crowd, and the slick performance of their hook-laden set was the perfect sign off to a memorable afternoon.

Join Tony Hawks for some Random Fun The TV and radio star is stopping in Horsham for some topical ranting and random entertaining Comedian and best-selling author Tony Hawks is about to embark on his first UK tour in ten years, with 32 dates of ‘random fun’ and he’s bringing his brand new show to The Capitol on Sunday, September 25. The star of hundreds of BBC Radio and TV shows including Just a Minute, I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, Have I Got News for You, Comic Relief, and The Unbelievable Truth has had a packed and varied decade but can’t wait to step out in front of a live audience again. Tony said: “I’ve been busy writing books, doing lots of radio shows and also scripting and producing the feature film versions of Round Ireland with a Fridge and Playing the
Moldovans at Tennis but although film making has been a fascinating experience I missed being on stage and have been really looking forward to getting back out on the road.” Tony will be using personal experiences from his life and career to go off on all sorts of tangents and telling stories as part of several new routines. Expect plenty of rants and views on the world today. The show is similar to a one-man variety show and Tony will use slides, film clips and play a few funny songs on the piano and guitar. Plus, not forgetting, Stutter Rap! There will also be a good dose of audience participation and lots of improvisation and the performer hopes that it will live up to its name and be an evening of
randomness and fun. Tony added: “Comedy performers now work across lots of different media with requests to appear on TV, radio, film, podcasts and DVDs and very often when you’re hired to be on a show you’re asked to pretend to play a certain role or take a particular angle. But what appeals about the stage is that it has a far greater sense of honesty so as an individual who is writing and performing their own material it is an amazing challenge, great fun and allows you to explore yourself, hopefully, in front of an audience who are laughing and enjoying the show!” Tickets are £16 and are available at www.thecapitolhorsham.com or from the Box Office on 01403 750220.

Jackson Live In Concert A West End star and one of the King of Pop’s biggest fans recreates the music and dance on stage at The Capitol It’s the ultimate Michael Jackson tribute show, featuring live vocals and fabulous costumes and now it’s coming to Horsham. Amir Sharmar and his talented band of musicians faithfully recreate the Michael Jackson concert experience, with a selection of his favourite hits. Amir started performing at an early age, and his work in musical theatre, includes West End hit shows such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He said: “Being in a Michael Jackson tribute band is the biggest privilege for me. I have grown up watching Michael Jackson perform. My passion is his music. “Performing his songs, and for it to
be well received, gives me an incredible feeling of happiness and serenity. I fell in love with the song Another Part of Me when I watched Michael Jackson sing it at Wembley stadium in 1998, my hometown. “The Way You Make Me Feel is my homage to his live show with the extended dance break and we try and recreate that Michael Jackson magical performance for the audience.” This portrayal of Michael Jackson by Amir and his band has been well received on his tour, with highly energetic and accurate performances of the king of pop. See the show at The Capitol on Saturday, September 24 at 8pm.

Apollo 18
First published by British author Charlotte Bronte in 1847, the book has been recreated in a film starring starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. The complicated plot has been critically acclaimed and surrounds the life of its title character. A mousy governess softens the heart of her employer only to discover he is hiding a secret.
Using footage filmed in the style of a documentary, this Sci Fi horror documents the fictional mission of Apollo 18 to the moon (a shuttle launch that was aborted in the 1970s). Could what they find be the reason no one has ever been back since?

Here we are again at the beginning of a new school year and at the end of the Summer holidays. There will be a sigh of relief echoing through many households. Beds will be stripped and there will be a lifting of the air of lethargy which seems to linger around before the start of term. New students and pupils will start the new academic year with thoughts of exciting, if daunting, new adventures. The prospect of a fresh start is attractive to us all. I imagine there are students of all ages who have bought a collection of stationery, pens and pencils and eagerly put them in

the latest pencil case, ready for the big day. They embark on their new studies promising that this year it will be different; they will fulfil all their tasks brilliantly and on time. There will be no more sloppiness or shirking. The prospect of clean, white, crisp pages in a new school exercise book is very enticing. This is how I always think of this month – a clean page waiting to be written on without any splodges or past mistakes spoiling the view. This mood of self-discipline and reinvention pays all of us a visit at this time of year as plans hatched during the holidays pull us to put them into action. September is one of the most popular months for joining a gym, starting a cookery course or a diet, or planning a new career move. With the pressures of managing the children in the holidays eased a little, we can focus on US again. Many of us will see our children leave for university during this month and this can leave a void. But with correct planning now, you can look forward to developing hidden aspects of yourself which will enrich your life. There are many courses on offer for adults and the range and quality is quite staggering, with scuba diving, photography, Reiki healing, aromatherapy and counselling jostling alongside more traditional,
academic subjects. Sometimes a skill can be developed as a career or business. You can pick up brochures from the library and the fees are usually very reasonable. After a Summer of indulgence, we all seem to have a few more pounds to lose and it is an ideal time to sign up for an exercise class at the gym. The range of classes is fabulous, with Zumba being a top favourite at the moment as it combines fun dance moves with fat-burning cardio exercise. One of the unexpected benefits of joining a class at this time is that everyone is new so it is easier to make friends and keep motivated. After a long Summer looking after children or teenagers, it is really refreshing to have a chat with a fellow mum over a latte (skinny, of course!) and you can share some of your plans and goals. Children also look forward to resuming some of their leisure activities and there are many on offer which help them ease the stress of school and develop confidence with new skills. They will make new friends too. Enjoy your September and make plans, but don’t worry too much if you make a couple of mistakes as there will be always be another new page waiting to be filled. Now where is that ink eraser?

Walk your way to good health this Autumn A new ‘all weather’ Autumn Health Walks programme has been brought out by Horsham District Council’s Health Walks scheme featuring a wide variety of free to attend walks for all levels of walkers. The Health Walks scheme, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2010, has over 200 guided walks across the Horsham District and all the walks are led by fully trained volunteers. The walks scheme gives people regular slots that they can take up and there is always a walk on Saturdays and Sundays as well as regular walks throughout the week month and year. Jill Shuker, Health Walks Coordinator at Horsham District Council, said: “We all know that we’d be healthier, happier and sharper if we exercised regularly. But despite our best intentions, getting active sometimes doesn’t happen. “National guidelines recommend getting at least two and a half hours of exercise a week. That can seem quite a tough challenge with our busy lives.

New health advice service launched “But there is good news: a new study suggests that you don’t have to work out that much to gain health benefits. Even small amounts of physical activity — say, half the national recommendation — are enough to improve heart health. So come and join us for a walk and start looking after your heart on a regular basis.” For more information and a list of the latest walks, go to the Horsham District Council website www. horsham.gov.uk or alternatively call Horsham District Council on 01403 215269.
A new healthy lifestyle advice service will be launched by Horsham District Council later this month as part of a West Sussex-wide health prevention initiative. Known as the Horsham District Health and Wellbeing Hub, its role will be to help promote and improve the health and quality of life of local people. From September 14, residents can contact the new Horsham District Wellbeing Hub on 01403 215111 and access a ‘one stop shop’ of information and advice on physical and emotional health matters. People will be able to talk to a wellbeing advisor about their health concerns and find out about local
services and support groups.
Issues they may wish to get help with could include: • Giving up alcohol, smoking, drugs • Healthy eating • Creating a healthy home • Good mental health • Being active and social
To ensure that everyone can access the hub, the District Council will be working with local organisations to deliver the service across the whole of the district. A new website is also available at www.horshamdistrictwellbeing.org. uk

Scramble! September “market comment” from Neil Moore, Managing Director of Guy Leonard & Co Neil Moore of Guy Leonard & Company comments as follows: There is a lot of scrambling going on at the moment. Scrambling for university places, scrambling to recover from riots, and scrambling to handle trading, employment, banking and international currency difficulties. On the surface there is no such scramble in the property market. But don’t be deceived. Under the surface there is a great deal going on. Sellers are scrambling to sell and buyers are scrambling to buy. For buyers the pendulum seems once again to have swung in their favour. It is another good time to buy. This is particularly so in the middle market sector. Not perhaps so much for first time buyers beset with mortgage deposit challenges, but even in this sector buy-to-let investors are benefiting from a very active lettings market with rentals on the rise. In some circumstances it is now cheaper to buy than rent. Yet some sellers are just not scrambling enough for their own good. They still believe that market conditions are a lot better than they are - this illusion is fuelled by press reports that the central London market is thriving. But this has a great deal to do with foreign buyers moving international currency. In fact, of the twenty most expensive houses sold in the UK recently, only two weren’t sold to foreign buyers – and Bernie Ecclestone bought them both! The result is a super micro-market in London that is out of step with the rest of the country. For sellers outside London there are some warm property spots. But in the main those anxious to sell for whatever reason should accept that they will only find a buyer quickly through competitive pricing. Location, location, location is no longer enough. Today it is location, location, location, price and presentation that separate the movers from the stayers. Perhaps sellers should learn from school-leavers who have cancelled their longed-for gap year to avoid higher university costs. Needs must as the devil drives. So sellers should scramble to get their houses in order and buyers should scramble for a great opportunity. We are all entering a new age with a shifting economic axis and an uncertain future. But what is very certain, despite these difficult times, is that we all need somewhere to live and we always will. If we can be of assistance please contact Neil Moore of Guy Leonard & Company on 01903 742354 or visit our website www.guyleonard.co.uk

Q A
I have found a cheap agent who just puts our house on the internet and uses little or no press or magazine advertising – should this matter nowadays?
Yes, yes and yes again – it should definitely matter! Whilst property websites play a very important part in reaching potential buyers instantly, their role should not be over stated. They should be treated as just another tool we can use to maximize exposure for our client’s houses but only in conjunction with other, more traditional methods. This is the only way you can be certain you have reached the entire target market for your house. For instance, by just relying on websites you are not reaching anyone without regular access to a computer; whether they are of an older generation or simply not interested in going online after having spent all day at work on one for instance. But more importantly, by not using the press, or even window advertising in the branches, you are missing out on many buyers. Allow me to explain; many serious buyers contact us after spotting one of our houses either in a window display, newspaper or magazine advert because they were not actually registered with any agent and were not regularly checking property websites because what they wanted was relatively rare or unusual. However, they still couldn’t resist flicking through the property pages or glancing in our office windows on a regular basis. Once they spot their perfect property in this way, they will then either contact us or check out more details first on the websites prior to calling us. So a lot of website enquiries were in fact initially press or magazine leads that prompted them to visit a website to learn more about the house. Without the initial press advert they would never have gone onto the website in the first place! This is why it is vital your estate agent actively utilizes all the best media in their area to help you reach the widest possible market. At Harper James for instance, we are the only agent to advertise in both the local property papers as well as all three of the local glossy magazines; in conjunction with promoting our houses on 13 websites! So beware – by saving a few hundred pounds on fees you may loses thousands by missing that ideal buyer who would have paid the best price for your house. If you are contemplating putting your house on the market and would appreciate a market appraisal or would like an answer to any property-related question, please call me on 01403 732727 or email rossattwood@ harper-james.co.uk

How long could you maintain your household bills and your lifestyle if your income stopped?
With fuel prices on the increase, gas and electric bills going up and many retail products more expensive now than they were a year ago, people are feeling the purse strings being tightened. When you add in the fact that many people have seen little or no pay rises since 2007, many households are having to prioritise where they spend there money. It is worth spending the time, listing what are the essential bills and what is a luxury. How many people pay for the latest mobile phone, the full sky package and even insure their pets, before protecting their income! There are many ways that you can protect your income and make sure your loved ones are financially sound if your income was to cease. Death - In the event of your death, you can take out a life insurance policy to produce a lump sum of money, or derive an income for many years to come. Your family could use this to pay off a mortgage and have an extra amount to pay the household bills.
Serious Illness - In the event of you being diagnosed with a critical illness, again you can take out a protection policy to produce a lump sum of money. You could use this to pay for the best medical care, clear your debts or pay off your mortgage. Either way, it would take off the pressure of having to return to work as soon as possible, increasing your recovery time.
Redundancy - In these uncertain times, how many people can claim that their job is 100% safe? Should you be made redundant, how confident would you be to secure alternative work before your money rang out? Redundancy cover would give you a monthly income for a period of time, until you can find the right job for you.
These are many other ways of making sure that your families lifestyles will not be affected should your income stop, whether that would be short term or forever. If you are more likely to insure your television, than your own life then please spend time focusing on what is really important! To find out more about this, please contact me on 01403 268562. Q A
I am in the process of buying a Victorian house in Billingshurst. Can you tell me, what are the most important things to look for when buying such an old house?
If you are considering buying an older home, then you have probably removed maintenance free from your vocabulary and have no weekend plans for coming years. Higher repair and maintenance expenses should be factored into your budget when calculating the total cost of purchasing an older home. Repairs, renovations and even pre-purchase inspection costs can be considerably higher than if you were buying a newer home. If it has been well maintained, the structure of an old house usually needs only some minor repairs, renewal or maintenance. Later additions and alterations may be built to a lower standard than the original home, however, and can be in need of major repairs or renovations. This doesn’t mean that all original structures are flawless. Neglected sub voids and roof spaces can have structural defects. Wood destroying insects can damage timbers for years before they are detected. Perpetual water intrusion and damp penetration could have damaged areas that are now concealed. In most period homes there is usually at least one service system in need of updating. Keep in mind, most electrical systems have been added to an old home and were not considered when it was originally constructed. In old homes there is usually a mix of old materials and some new. Existing systems are extended to additions and remodeling a kitchen or bathroom. Unless the home has been gutted recently, you can almost count on updating some of the piping and fixtures. 0riginal roof coverings are certainly nearing their life expectancy. There are a multitude of roofing materials, all with their own life expectancies and regular maintenance requirements. Many old homes have multiple additions with different types and ages of the various roofs. Recent discoveries and statistics have changed building regulations and product specifications. Some building materials and practices used long ago are no longer acceptable in newly constructed homes. Some safety items can be easily added or altered in older homes. Hand railings can be improved inexpensively. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors can be easily installed. Other health related concerns, like asbestos and lead, can be quite expensive to correct or remove. These are just a few of the areas of concern to an old house buyer. The most important part of purchasing an older home is having a Building Survey undertaken by a Chartered Surveyor. This will provide you with peace of mind and let you know what you are taking on board for the future Please contact Duncan Jagger if you would like further information or a quote for a Building Survey or RICS Homebuyers Report (01403 732727 or duncanjagger@ harper-james.co.uk)

No savings? No deposit? No problem Connells announces new 100% Family Guarantee mortgage In today’s housing market, saving enough money for a deposit on a home is one of the most difficult challenges facing first-time buyers and second-time home movers. To help these buyers, Connells estate agency in Horsham has announced a new mortgage product allowing purchasers to borrow 100% of the value of their chosen property. This exciting launch of a new 100% Family Guarantee mortgage allows first and second-time buyers to buy a home, subject to a guarantee from an immediate family member in the form of a secured collateral charge on their property. The guarantee covers up to 25% of the mortgage amount, enabling the buyer to purchase a home without the need for a large deposit. “This is one of the first 100% mortgage products since the credit crunch and it couldn’t come a better time,” says Dan Ryan Mortgage Services Consultant for Connells Horsham. “Saving for a deposit and getting a mortgage have been the most significant stumbling blocks for first-time
buyers over the last few years so our new 100% Family Guarantee product will help countless buyers get on the property ladder.” As well as helping first-time buyers, Connells new 100% mortgage could enable second-time home movers who may need to upsize but lack the necessary capital to put a deposit on their next home. “Dwindling house prices have caused some homeowners to become stuck without the means to make their next move,” Dan continues. “This new 100% mortgage will allow parents, stepparents and grandparents to help their children move home without the need to lend or gift them a large amount of money for a deposit. “Instead, they can guarantee up to 25% of the loan against their own property.” If you are interested in Connells new 100% mortgage product and would like to book an appointment with our mortgage consultant, please call the branch on 01403 256331 or email Horsham@connells.co.uk

Citroën’s new concept focuses on fun Olli Nott Motors Reporter
olli@the-resident.co.uk
Citroën will present a brand new, highly innovative concept vehicle at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Called Tubik, this eye-catching model is a high-tech executive shuttle based on one key idea - travel should be fun. Building on Citroën’s Multicity project - an online portal and route finder, currently live in France, which covers all available means of transport (car, train, plane, etc.) - Tubik
takes mobility solutions to the next level. Featuring the very best of Citroën’s ‘Créative Technologie’, Tubik is specifically designed to make travel meaningful and enjoyable. Inspired by Citroën’s renowned Type H or ‘TUB’ van, but with all the prestigious styling and characteristics of modern Citroën design, Tubik is a 9-seater packed with entertaining technology. Exceptionally striking both inside and out, Tubik boasts offbeat, distinctive styling with colours and materials designed to meet the highest standards of sophistication and comfort.
As part of its design philosophy, Tubik responds to a changing society where extended families and groups of friends travel together, often in numbers exceeding four or five, with plenty of room for luggage. To make travel enjoyable for its passengers, Tubik incorporates a lounge-style cocoon dedicated to comfort and relaxation. The modular seats are designed to be arranged in many different ways (semi-reclined,
face-to-face, etc.), and the onboard technology - which includes a giant semi-circular screen and high-definition surround sound - turns the cabin into an area that is perfect for sharing over long distances. With the Citroën Tubik concept, the journey becomes as important as the destination. Offering generous space whilst minimising fuel consumption, Tubik is powered by Citroën’s innovative
Hybrid4 technology. With this full-hybrid diesel drivetrain and optimised aerodynamics, Tubik maintains CO2 emissions at a level comparable to a conventional saloon. This is a concept, and its styling does look rather harsh, but the Tubik could evolve into a more practical vehicle and make it to the production line within the next few years! Watch this space!

So, to celebrate Lifetime Warranty’s first anniversary, Vauxhall is out to find the oldest car in the UK wearing the Griffin badge that’s still road legal, has covered less than 100,000 miles and has been owned by the same person from the date of first registration. All Vauxhall’s qualify, and if the Prince Henry had not out-survived its original owner it would too, having covered little more than 50,000
miles in the last 100 years. So, if you still own a Victor, Viva, Ventora, Chevette, Nova or even a Lotus Carlton, and bought it new all those years ago, Vauxhall would like to hear from you. All you need to do to enter your Vauxhall is go to vauxhalldriverscentre.co.uk/oldestcar and fill in the entry form there - advising what model you own, its current mileage, when you bought it new and from what dealer. Entries must be received by October 16, 2011, and subject to verification, the owner of the winning car will receive a halfday performance driving course in the latest 325 horsepower Insignia VXR at Vauxhall’s proving ground in Bedfordshire. “There’s huge loyalty among our owners,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director. “And for average-mileage customers who plan to keep their new Vauxhalls for the medium to long term, Lifetime Warranty is a valuable and reassuring asset for as long as they own the car. No other manufacturer has been able to offer such complete peace of mind for their customers.” If anyone still has a Vauxhall that qualifies, let us know too!

woe Nwachukwu strike not enough YM’s continues James Herd Football
Coach Hugo Langton defended Horsham’s players after they suffered their third home defeat in a row, 2-1 against Margate. The Hornets conceded in the 10th minute when a cross from the left looped over goalkeeper Matthew Armstrong-Ford and Tom Bradbrook put the visitors in front. Horsham struggled to get into the game in the first half, but they ended it strongly and new signing Calum McGeehah’s header from a free kick went just wide. The home side improved after the break and equalised in the 70th minute, Daniel Morris playing through Tony Nwachukwu for his fifth goal of the season. But two minutes later, Horsham gave away a free kick 30 yards out and Bradbrook rifled into the top corner. Langton said: “It was an absolute screamer and one he’ll probably never score again in his life. But they did their jobs better than we did ours and that’s why they won the game. “We were below the standards

“I’m not blaming the players at all. They’ve been terrific, absolutely terrific. We’ve not been together long, we’ve built a side from scratch, and we’ve done it very, very quickly. “The boys have gelled nicely together – they get on really well. I know some of the players have said

kept out, man of the match Alex Moore headed against the crossbar and an inswinging corner from Nash also hit the woodwork as Horsham piled on the pressure. Former Horsham youngster Josh Clack scored twice for the visitors (14 and 82).
fellow newcomer Russell Eldridge: “Russell has a left foot that we perhaps feel we’ve been missing. Calum is a big lad, he can head balls, he can defend, and he did exactly that. “I’m very pleased with the two new boys, but there’s more to come from both of them.” In the absence of Premier League and Championship matches, Saturday was Non-League Day and Langton added: “It was a good day. Both sets of supporters made plenty of noise and our supporters were excellent as always. “They understand what we’re up against. I hope at the end of the season they can look back and say they’ve enjoyed the season.” Langton said of Horsham’s visit to East Thurrock tomorrow (Saturday): “They’re a good side, well organised. They’ve lost one or two big players, but they’re quick out wide and they have players up front who can score goals. “It’s going to be tough, but we’re aware of some of their weaknesses.” Carshalton Athletic will visit Gorings Mead on Tuesday before Horsham play host to Lingfield in the FA Cup first qualifying round next Saturday. Langton said of the cup draw: “I’m really pleased. They’ve got players like Nicky Forster and Ian Pearce, so it’s fantastic.”

Horsham YMCA slumped to a 2-1 league defeat at lowly Ringmer before crashing out of the John O’Hara League Cup to Division 2 side Littlehampton. Ten-man Ringmer came from behind to leave YM fourth from bottom in Division 1 of the Sussex County League. And it got worse as Littlehampton scored twice in the final five minutes of extra time, including an equaliser in the 123rd minute, then won the penalty shootout 3-2 as Jon Hendricks saved three spot-kicks. Ben Burns’ header and Dean Wright’s penalty had put YM in charge after a goalless 90 minutes, but boss Sammy Donnelly was frustrated by his side’s failure to see out the game. He said: “The lads have got to take responsibility. It’s very disappointing to let their lads come through like they did. We dominated the whole game. It could have been five or six had it not been for their goalkeeper. “We’ve got to re-group and keep going. There’s no easy way to get out of this little spell that we’re in.” With Wade Eason (knee) and Liam Hunter (calf) both forced to leave the field and Lloyd Graham (hamstring) already injured, YM may be under strength for the home match against Hassocks tomorrow (Saturday). Storrington were first-round casualties in the John O’Hara League Cup as Division 1 flyers Rye United pulverised the Swans 6-0, demonstrating the gulf between the teams. Wes Tate scored twice. But the Swans are a different prospect in the league and produced another good display in a 2-2 home draw against high-flying Rustington. Steyning banked two draws on the spin to steady the ship, Dave Harris scoring early in a 1-1 draw against Loxwood to supplement a 0-0 draw at Rustington. Forest are the surprise package of Division 3 and continue to blaze a trail at the top. Andy Lampard prodded home a stoppage-time winner in a 2-1 victory against Bosham. Roffey were the big movers of the week, off the mark at the fourth attempt against league whipping boys Clymping. Aaron Jeal (two), Gareth Standing and Craig Kelly scored in a 4-1 away win. Russell Harris was the only member of the Broadbridge Heath team to pack his shooting boots against Hurstpierpoint. The Bears dominated possession and created a plethora of chances but were undone by a combination of bad luck, wretched shooting and inspired goalkeeping. The visitors were ruthlessly efficient and dispatched their scant chances to win 3-1. TD Shipley continued their shaky start with a 2-0 home defeat against Pease Pottage.

Heartbreak for Horsham as Hastings take crown Why shirt’s Martin Read Cricket
Starting their final match with a lead of 18 points, Horsham’s dream of winning the Sussex Premier League withered in the late Summer sun. The home side failed to post an adequate score, producing an unusually tentative batting display on a firm, dry pitch, and the title was wrenched away by a determined Hastings side. Batting first after winning the toss, Horsham were soon in trouble at 13-2 with both openers dismissed. Owain Jones (74) was the mainstay of the innings as only Sam Attfield (34) stayed long enough to build a telling partnership. Jones, last out, hit seven fours and a six as Hastings skipper Jason Finch took 6-31. Horsham ended on 177. Fifty more runs would have provided an extra, invaluable four points and set a more defendable total. Early inroads were essential and hopes were raised when Devon Endersby promptly despatched Finzel without scoring. But with plenty of time to get the runs, Hastings were not under pressure to score quickly and the second wicket did not fall until the score reached 90. Sussex professionals Kirk Werners (72) and Matt Machan (39), leader of the league batting averages, batted without undue alarm. They were well supported by Finch, whose 35 sealed a telling all-round contribution in his retirement game. Will Beer’s absence through injury weakened the attack, but Sam Cushing took 2-27, Endersby 1-14 and Michael Munday 1-33. Hastings’ comfortable victory, with 22 overs to spare, reduced Horsham to runners-up, as they had been last year and on two previous occasions this decade. A large crowd watched the

agonising defeat, Horsham’s first at home and only the second in their entire campaign, ending a run of six consecutive wins and hopes of a first league title since 2004. After consistently bringing the best out of his young team throughout the season, skipper Craig Gallagher was naturally disappointed. He said: “We kept losing wickets just when it looked as though partnerships could develop. “It’s very frustrating to be denied the title when we’ve worked so hard
We can be proud of ‘what we’ve achieved ’
and got so close, but having been without several experienced players from last year (including Michael Thornely and, until last week, Luke Marshall), we hadn’t anticipated finishing so high in the table. “We can be proud of what we’ve achieved.” Hastings finished with 413 points to win the title for the seventh time and the first since 2003. Needing 13 points from their final game but only gaining eight, Horsham were second on 409. Champions for the last three years, Preston Nomads (375) were third after stumbling in the run-in. Worthing and Bexhill have been promoted to the Premier League at the expense of Pulborough and Three Bridges. University beckons for some of Horsham’s young team, so there will be further opportunities for players from the club’s impressive development programme, perhaps bolstered by a new signing or two. Roffey cemented a highly creditable fifth position in their inaugural season in the Premier League. Beaten just once at home – by Horsham – they despatched Hastings and

Preston Nomads and enjoyed an excellent run in the National Knockout Cup. In their final game, at home against Nomads, Roffey won by 13 runs after posting 239-9, Theo Rivers top scoring with 78 abetted by Chris Plaister’s 44. Carl Simon finished with 3-40 and Stuart Faith 2-46. Nomads were bowled out for 226, despite 71 from Ollie Gatting and 42 from Luke Schildkamp. Stuart Whittingham bagged 4-56 and Luke Barnard 4-65.

Ian Morris 01403 230554 www.northwestsussexseagulls.co.uk
It is a well-known fact that football people are a superstitious bunch. I have many experiences of how following the same routine contributed to my team’s success. When playing I always used to put my boots on in the same order, left first then right. And the year we reached our only cup final, I went a whole season without having my jockstrap washed. It was not pleasant, but it worked! When my team-mates could stand the unwashed article no longer, I was forced to retire – and this gave me a chance to watch the Seagulls at Withdean. I soon realised I had to be in the ground at least an hour before kickoff, buy my programme and Withdean Wager ticket from the same outlets and use the same urinal in the portable-building gent’s convenience if I wanted the team to be victorious. Obviously this was not always possible, but last season I managed to satisfy my craving to follow the routine at every home game. And look what happened! Following the move to the American Express Community Stadium, it became necessary to identify what actions on my part would help contribute to the team’s success. First came a chance to join a group of likeminded Albion nuts, ably led by Andy and Paul, by signing up to be a member of the North West Sussex Seagulls. I bought a season ticket for the superb coach service from Horsham to The Amex, via the various pickups en route (which must never be changed as they are part of the new routine). Then I bought my new Albion home shirt to be proudly worn on match days. And with the games coming thick and fast in the early part of the season I suddenly realised my shirt had not been washed. May I take this opportunity to apologise to fans on the bus and at the ground, but there is no way that shirt is being washed. It is clearly helping Gus and the boys in their magnificent start. I can hear the sceptics among you muttering “what a complete muppet to believe in such rubbish”. But the only time I haven’t travelled on the coach or worn my shirt on a home match day was when I was on holiday. And what happened? We only drew, having won every other game. Makes you think, does it not?

Kieran Vernon achieved the best result so far in his Porsche Carrera Cup career, finishing seventh at Knockhill, Fife. In only his third Carrera Cup meeting, the 21-year-old from West Chiltington impressed ITV4 commentators by racing strongly against much more experienced drivers. Despite limited running on a dry track, the BRDC Rising Star was quickly into his stride and even topped the timesheets for a brief period at the start of qualifying on a damp track. The Nationwide/Motorbase driver was disappointed not to achieve a top-10 grid spot as he qualified 12th for both races, just a tenth of a second from eighth. Determined to achieve his objective of finishing in the top 10, he
staged an impressive charge up to seventh in the first race, passing experienced drivers in a mistake-free and highly polished drive. He moved up to 10th in the second race but was badly held up early in the race and lost further ground while stuck behind a backmarker who was a lap down.
proved he has the racer’s instincts to pass cleanly – a skill he will find vital as he gets ever closer to the front of the grid. “With an additional pre-race test organised prior to the next meeting at Rockingham, Kieran will be itching
to get back behind the wheel.” By choosing to race the Porsche last weekend, rather than his Renault at Thruxton, Hampshire, Vernon effectively conceded the Protyre Formula Renualt BARC title. Dino Zamparelli (Bristol) won both Renault races.

Tim Harvey, the 2010 champion who gave up his drive to Vernon part way through this season, said: “This was Kieran’s best weekend so far and is testament to his ability to learn quickly and not be overawed by this highly competitive series. “In a championship where overtaking is notoriously difficult, Kieran
