Tributes to lost sister

Molly and Kayleigh Redford were at a charity fun day and fundraising auction, held at Horsham Rugby Club on Saturday, to raise money in memory of their baby sister Tilly Rose. Mum Gemma Redford gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in January. Sadly, due to complications, Tilly had already passed away. The event raised £4,600 for Sands. More on Page 23

Kilnwood development back on housing agenda Remember all that talk about Crawsham, which in these parts tended to form the hub of most debates about development fears? Well, it’s back on the agenda, as the developer Crest Nicholson has submitted a planning application for the first part of the process for a new neighbourhood comprising 2,500 new homes. Not even remotely strange is the fact that they won’t be going with the name of Crawsham - the name the site was given by those fearful of the neighbourhood bridging the gap between Horsham and Crawley. Instead, Crest Nicholson has gone for Kilnwood Vale, which was suggested by visitors to the Open Days last October and was subsequently accepted by councillors

THE DEVELOPMENT WILL CLOSE THE GAP

BETWEEN HORSHAM AND FAYGATE BY A THIRD from Horsham District Council and Crawley Borough Council. The West of Bewbush Joint Area Action Plan (JAAP) was adopted on 31st July 2009 by both Horsham and Crawley councils, following the recommendations made by an independent inspector. It means up to 2,500 new homes are expected to be built on land 70% of which is so called green field land in that it is previously

undeveloped - to the west of Bewbush, which is currently the part of Crawley that sits closest to us. Following a lengthy consultation period, Crest Nicholson has applied for outline approval for the development of approximately 2500 dwellings, new access from A24 and a secondary access from A264, neighbourhood centre, comprising retail, community building with library facility, public house, primary care centre and care home),

main pumping station, and land for a primary school and nursery. It also includes land for employment uses, new rail station, energy centre and associated amenity space. The application seeks full permission for the development of Phase 1 of 291 dwellings, internal roads, garages, driveways, 672 parking spaces, pathways, sub-station, floor attenuation ponds and associated amenity space. If, or when, it is approved, it’ll

close the gap between Crawley and Faygate by about a third. A joint statement by Crawley Borough Council and Horsham District Council, issued last year, stated: ‘The JAAP includes a vision for the neighbourhood, development principles and objectives, a conceptual masterplan, a series of policies to ensure the delivery of the conceptual masterplan and a clear indication of the infrastructure, services and facilities that will be delivered to ensure a neighbourhood development.” There was talk about there being a relief road for the A264 or even the A23 being built to deal with the increase in traffic. But this won’t be the case. There will be new access routes, and obviously a busier A264. Whether or not the new railway station means we can all look forward to a lengthy Horsham-Littlehaven-Faygate-Kilnwood-Ifield-Cra wley train journey remains to be seen. One option would be for Kilnwood to replace Faygate at certain times. It is hoped up to 40% will be affordable housing, which Horsham District Council will be keen to achieve having recently allowed developments offering a far lower rate. The first homes are likely to be built in 2011/12 before development continues. The application will be heard by Horsham District Council later this year.

Inspector Phil Nicholas said: "Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and family liaison officers are offering support to the families during this difficult time. “As with all road collision, officers have examined the road surface as part of the investigation. This has been ruled out as a contributing factor in this collision." No less than four helicopters went to the scene of an accident. They included the three charitably funded air ambulances from Kent, Sussex and London and the Sussex police helicopter.

Spitfire painting to help today’s heroes Sadly, there is no known photograph of the Horsham Spitfire, shot down during the Second World War. But the spitfire certainly existed, paid for primarily by the efforts of one stan parsons. stan would do some fantastic things to raise money so horsham could have its own spitfire during the war. whenever he heard of a plane going down he would ride out to the site on his bicycle and cut bits off planes and sell them as souvenirs. for those of us who are too young to have lived through it, it’s hard to imag-

story. cedric said: “i was doing a series of paintings for coolham during the 50 anniversary of d-day, and some of us were asked if we would put up some of the visiting pilots for a couple of days during the event. “i agreed and so this chap, a former pilot, sqn. Ldr. a.c. ‘Joe’ Leigh, came to stay with us. Joe called and asked for directions and while doing so he asked what i was currently painting. i said it was the horsham spitfire from 611 squadron. he said ‘that’s strange, i was in 611 squadron!’” Joe asked for the aircraft number and discovered he had actually flown the horsham spitfire in June 1941. he was one of the lucky ones from his squadron, as many were lost. the roll of honour states that horsham’s spitfire went missing in a sweep over northern france near Boulogne on 21st october 1941. it claimed the lives of John frederick reeves, from Bexhill-on-sea, and John Bosch. if you would like to buy one of cedric’s prints, they are available at the resident’s offices on 26 north street, horsham, rh12 1rQ. You can call us on 01403 251000 for more information. the prints cost just £10 and every penny will be donated to help for heroes.

Sharks hunting for promotion Come and meet the team

There’s a chance for you all to meet the Sussex cricket players in Swan Walk on Tuesday. Sussex Country Cricket Club players will be at the mosaic in Swan Walk, Horsham, on 17th August from 1pm. At least three players are expected that will be starring for Sussex in their matches during the EMCEL Filters Horsham Festival of Cricket which runs from 18th to

22nd August at the Horsham Cricket & Squash Club. Horsham Unlimited negotiated a co-operative marketing agreement with Sussex CCC under which the cricket festival would be more widely promoted around the town in return for direct promotion of the town’s shops and restaurants to the 10,000 expected visitors to the matches during the week.

It’s always exciting when the Sussex cricket team come to town for the Horsham Festival of Cricket. More often than not in recent years, the county side’s Horsham fixture has been an important match - in 2006 and 2007 they were fighting to become County Champions (they were successful both times) and last year of course they were trying to stave off relegation to the 2nd Division. They were not successful... And so it is, that when Sussex turn up in town to play their four day County Championship 2nd Division match against Derbyshire on 18th August, there is once again much at stake. Sussex currently lead the division from Glamorgan and Northamptonshire, and are seeking a quick return to the top flight. Derbyshire meanwhile are struggling, rooted to the bottom of the division with just two wins. There’s always a lively atmosphere during the games, and some great players on show such as England bowler Monty Panesar, and local boy

Chris Nash. Following the four day test, Sussex Sharks will take on Somerset at Horsham in the one day Clydesdale bank 40 match. It’s a vital fixture, as the Sharks are currently second in the table behind Somerset, who have games in hand having won all seven of their matches so far this season. For tickets to the match visit the Sussex Sharks website at www.sussexcricket.co.uk

You will need to have it with you when you are out on your travels as many of the offers ask that you show the programme to qualify.

If there’s one thing that Horsham does well it must be food. Recent statistics don’t show that if a new business opens up in the town, it’s seven billion times more likely to be a restaurant than anything else. That figure is doubled if you’re referring to East Street. But it is fast becoming what Horsham as a town is best known for. Arundel has its castle, Bath has its Roman ruins, Crawley has its abandoned Ford Sierras, and Horsham has its eateries. We have a great celebration of that every year the four week Food and Drink Festival - and this year there’s 109 events, offers and promotions being held to highlight the best of local produce. a month long celebration of all the wonderful local food and drink from across the District. There’s a bit of everything in there, with offers from the likes of town lunchtime favourite Beeches Buffet to top end restaurants such as Wabi, just over the road on East Street. The range of the deals vary it could be a superb buy one get one free deal or perhaps just a free glass of wine at certain times. Some are truly noteworthy - such as Ginger’s Kitchen in Partridge Green, offering one festival goer a luxury selection of dishes worth £100. The Resident will be highlighting some of the not-to-bemissed deals in the coming weeks. But if you are planning on dining out at all from 4th September to 3rd October, you

might as well pick up a copy, as it’ll almost certainly help you get something free or save a little cash. The Festival kicks off with the ‘Big Nibble’, a brilliant one day free event which guarantees to draw the crowds. The Big Nibble is a massive farmers market in the Carfax (it was in the Drill Hall last year, but will surely benefit from the town centre location this year), incorporating the regular Saturday Local Produce Market. You can meet the local producers, be entertained at the cookery theatre, where local chefs will be cooking up some

fantastic food throughout the day and the ever popular Beer Trail will be running all day – your chance to visit local pubs and try out some of the fabulous local beers on offer. Any of you thinking about a huge, free booze up, sorry chaps, the tankard you get is really small and you’ll look a bit of a lightweight if you stagger around town with one of them in your hands! Great event though, and don’t forget the Beer Festival too, on 11th September. Organised by Beer Essentials, it sells out fast, so be quick or miss out. Popular youth night don’t Costa too much How many times have you seen a group of teenagers gathered around a bus stop or some other nondescript hang out point and wondered why they have nowhere better to go? In Horsham, they actually have a better option, and it’s one that they’re even happy to take up. Yet sadly, they’re in danger of losing it. Not because of County Council cutbacks (some youth centres in the district look set to go as the council picks off easy targets in budget cuts), but a lack of sponsorship. The Friday Night Project @ Costa has proved to be an important destination for the youth of Horsham last winter. It ran from September 2009 to May 2010 and was highly successful, providing a safe and informal meeting place for young people aged 14-17 on Friday evenings, between 7pm and 9.30pm. It’s due to be extended to 10pm this year. Over 2,500 young people attended during the eight months it ran. As well as providing a safe, warm space for young people on Friday evenings, the project also raised awareness of safety amongst young people and the wider community, reduced the fear of crime, provided young people with somewhere safe to go, thus removing the necessity for them to gather outside in public places and reduced anti social behaviour. the project, said: “During this summer and with the lighter evening it brings, young people tend to meet their friends in Horsham Park, where they are currently being supported by the Snack Wagon and Horsham Youth Support Team. “For this reason, The Friday Night Project @ Costa finished at the end of April 2010, with the intention the project would be relaunched in September this year. “The re-launch of The Friday Night Project @ Costa is subject to securing the necessary funds. The cost of running the project from the beginning of September 2010 until the end of April 2011 is £3,660.00. “Last year, the project was delivered thanks to grants from Horsham West Locality Youth Forum and Saxon Weald. In the past Horsham District Council has allocated what funding it could to The Friday Night Project @ Costa, with the difference being met by partners. “Horsham District Council will continue to do this.” This is a great scheme for young people, a place where they feel comfortable and in control, and not some daft scheme called something like the Krazy Wikkid Club which tends to deter rather than attract teenagers. So if your business is in a position to help contribute to the cost of the project, it’s a good cause.

Malt Shovel scoops up In Bloom honour You wouldn’t think that a pub with a reputation as one of the best local venues for live rock music would also be known for its floral displays. But the Malt Shovel pub in Springfield Road, Horsham has indeed scooped the prize for the best pub display at Horsham in Bloom’s summer competition. Again the contest was well supported, with some magnificent displays despite the dry weather. The Best front garden winner was Mr D.Parker of Cottage Close, with his

Tributes to local legend Harry Gwyer “HaRRy waS a local lEGEnD wHo waS alwayS up FoR a lauGH”

a tribute to the late Harry Gwyer, written by Frank Di Martino. Thank you to all those who turned up at Harry Gwyer’s memorial evening at The Coot Pub, Horsham, on Saturday, 31st July. Harry was a local legend who would help anyone and was always up for a laugh. He loved his football. He would go to watch his beloved Tottenham Hotspur home and away (and also the odd England game) and he used to play in the local leagues himself. Our dad's Vic and Tom started Horsham Wanderers in the West Sussex Minor League Under-18's, and his brother Roy also played and scored the odd goal. We both moved on to men's football where we played for Forest Old Boys Res, but we were only there for two seasons, after which we went to Horsham

Olympic, where we won the Tony Kopp Cup (and what a save from Martin South, those of you who can remember it!) Harry and I, with the help of Peter Fever and the late Ian (Reg) Parker, started The Coot Sunday team back in 1979. Unknown to Harry and the others I also started up another team at the same time, Horsham Juventus. Both teams were elected into the same division. (Sorry Harry, We beat you twice, 10-0 and 21-1. You let in 31 goals in 2 games!) Harry asked me to go on a referee's course with him, which after eight weeks we both passed and were both refereeing games in Horsham Park, all in black with Fellaini hairstyles. There's lots more to tell, but that's for me and Harry to know. Rest in Peace and never forgotten Harry. Frank and the lads.

More on The Coot

The Coot, on Merryfield Drive, has been run successfully by Andy and Sue for almost three years. There’s always a warm welcome on offer and good food too the pub has introduced a full lunchtime menu with an offer of two main meals for only £8. There’s also a reasonably priced snack menu and a range of beverages. If you are looking for a pub

with a great atmosphere, while watching your football team on the big screen, then look no further. The Coot has two large Plasma screens showing Premier League matches on Sky and ESPN. You can also relax and unwind in the lounge area, which boasts an open log fire, or enjoy the (occasional) sunshine in the large Beer Garden. Most definitely a worthwhile visit!

Talk about day services A public meeting on the future of day services and activities across West Sussex takes place in Horsham next week. It’s part of West Sussex County Council’s ‘Your Day. Your Say’ public consultation, asking residents their views on a proposed new model for day services, including what type of day activities they would like to see available in the community. The public meeting in Horsham is one of six being held across West Sussex during the three month consultation, which runs

until Wednesday 27th October. It takes place on Wednesday, 18th August, from 6.30pm to 8pm, in Roffey Millennium Hall, Crawley Road, Roffey, Horsham, RH12 4DT. There will be a presentation on the proposals and a question and answer session for the public. Residents can also get involved in the public consultation online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/yourdayyoursay or email haveyoursay@westsussex.gov.uk or call 01243 777693 for a copy of the information booklet and questionnaire.

Pupils in photo contest Brock Taylor estate agents in Horsham have launched a fantastic competition for children to find new exciting photographs of the Horsham area to post on their website. The competition is open to pupils of Millais, Forest and Tanbridge House schools and is a wonderful opportunity for the students to get creative and have something exciting to work at over the summer holidays. “We are looking for pictures with a bit more edginess to them. They need to capture the iconic images of Horsham sure, but also show the spirit off the town.” commented Peter Maskell who is a director of Brock Taylor. The pupil who manages to cap-

ture the sprit of Horsham town will win £200 worth of vouchers along with six runners up prizes of £50 each, all redeemable at Jessop’s photography store. “We hope that the children of these schools will use at least some of their summer holidays to capture the essence of where they live”, said Peter. “Creativity will be the key to the success of this project. We want to see Horsham through the eyes of these children and we can’t wait to see what they come up with.” Entries can be placed on either CD or memory stick and need to be posted to their own school in an envelope with their name, school and age clearly stated. The closing date is Friday, 10th Sept.

Harleys head to Amberley Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre will be holding a Harley Davidson Ride-In on Sunday 15th August. A key attraction at the show will be Shaws Harley Davidson, the Sussex dealership, who will be bringing a show stand and a selection of brand new machines for visitors to admire.

Filipinos make a song and dance for tree A new local non-profit organisation, The Filipino Community of Horsham (TFCH), has been raising funds to plant a memorial tree in Horsham. TFCH, as it is now called, started in 2006 as an informal group of enthusiastic individuals and families, who regularly get together as their way of interacting with other Filipinos in the area. On September 23rd, 2008, the group formally held its first ever general assembly of Filipinos, which elected their first set of officers to run the TFCH group with its own set of bylaws and Constitution. This year, the group decided to make a project out of its yearly get together celebration in partnership with Horsham District Council by holding a fundraising event. The fundraising event, ‘The Spring Party’, was held on 10th June in Drill Hall, Horsham and featured live

bands, dancing and awards for this year’s basketball tournament. Money was raised through ticket and beverage sales and will all contribute towards the planting of a memorial tree for the Filipino community. The Filipino Community of Horsham’s purpose is to foster unity and relationships between and among Filipinos living in Horsham and surrounding areas.

Many sporting events are held by the organisation, such as a men’s basketball tournament and women’s badminton matches. The group is planning to organise an event for Black History Month, which is in October, for a bigger project and is hoping to work towards being a charitable organisation in the future. Horsham District Council will be promoting Black History Month nearer the

take ten In their Tenth year, Brooklands Studios brings to the stage an energetic team of performers showcasing a spectacular array of routines to popular chart hits, as well as tracks from some of our best loved musicals Tickets £13 11th-12th Sept

A new singing and dancing show with the world’s most popular and best loved pre-school characters in one exciting adventure! The extravaganza features Barney, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina, Pingu, and Fireman Sam 28-29th Aug (Tickets 13, Child £11)

popcorn-tastic summer now that toy story 3 has finished hogging the limelight, you can view some of the summer’s other big hits at the capitol. We may well have seen this year’s two stand-out films Christopher Nolan’s Inception and of course the latest from Woody and Buzz - in the last three weeks, but there’s more on offer. Actually, summer 2010 is pretty popcorn-tastic. Now on is an action thriller starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz that barely draws breath. Knight and Day (below) may well get an A* in silliness, but if you switch off your brain it’s an enjoyable ride. You might even ask for a half your money back, as you’ll only be using the edge of your seat. It’s on until 19th August. Also showing this week is The Last Airbender (below, right), the latest 3D offering. None of us at The Resident have seen it yet, but we hope that M. Night Shyamalan (who directed the Sixth Sense) has done the fantastic cartoon justice. Air, Water, Earth and Fire are four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara, a Waterbender, and her brother Sokka to restore balance to their war-torn world. The Last Airbender is showing from 13th - 26th August at the Capitol. Of course, the A Team is out. Half the script is of course already written (“I ain’t gettin’ on no plane”, “shut up fool!”, “I love

together, these unlikely partners must stop the forces of darkness it when a plan comes together”, “He’s on the jazz” and a five minute montage of the team making a missile launcher out of an old lawnmower and a cabbage) but nailing the roles of the original cast members is far harder. You may wonder why they didn’t just bring back Mr T as B.A. Baracus, but other than that it’s great fun! The A Team is showing on 20th-26th August. Then there’s a couple for the kids. Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore is on until 19th August, and then taking over until

Win: Sorcerer’s Apprentice goods

2nd September is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (top). This epic romantic comedy adventure is about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the centre of an ancient conflict between good and evil. Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred

Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé, giving him a crash course in the art and science of magic. Together, these unlikely partners must stop the forces of darkness. For tickets to all of these films call the Capitol box office on 01403 750220.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is coming to the Capitol theatre in Horsham on 20th August. To celelbrate the release of the new Disney production, The Resident has a special pack of goodies to give away to one lucky reader. The pack includes a watch, shoulder bag and dragon ring. To win, answer this question: What modern-day city does the film take place in? a) Paris b) New York c) London d) Los Angeles Send your answers by email only to ben@the-resident.co.uk by Friday, 20th August. Please include your full name, address, and phone number. One winner only. Details will not be passed on.

Lost in the music I had to write to you as today was the second time this year when I have come within a whisker of knocking someone down because they were listening to their iPod. It must happen all the time, but I felt I must warn parents to speak to their children - mainly the teenagers - as they seem to be so distant when walking and listening to music. The first incident happened at the big roundabout at the bottom of Kings Road, by Dreams bed store. I was coming from town, indicating right to go up Harwood Road, and a girl crossed the road from Kings Road to the roundabout right in front of me. I had to slam the brakes on and she leaped out of her skin. She looked so shaken, as

there must have been six inches between us. She looked at me, petrified, said sorry and scuttled away. Then last week on Springfield Road, a chap (who had no excuse as he was in his late twenties) pressed for the lights to cross over to Horsham Park, but no sooner had he pressed it than he started walking across. It was still green when I braked, as he ambled across, listening to his iPod. It was only when he reached the other side when he had a suspicion that he had done anything wrong! Please do be careful. ‘Died while engrossed in Lady Gaga’ is not a great thing to have on your headstone.

Town Hall issue is no laughing matter

I read Jack Reuben’s letter (30th July) in response to Robert Mayfield’s letter (23rd July) wherein he stated the case for keeping Horsham Town Hall for community activities and not turning it into another restaurant, namely Bill’s Produce and restaurant. I read Mr Reuben’s letter again and again trying to read some sense into it when he said, and I quote “I don’t think it’s wise to over saturate an area”. He must have been making some sort of joke because if an area is over-saturated with anything it is with restaurant after restaurant. Horsham will be the laughing stock of the south before long. He also said that having Bill’s in the Town Hall will enable people to see inside this unique building. Well I have seen inside it hundreds of times, not cut and carved about as Bill’s are aiming to with permission from Horsham District Council, even though it is a grade II listed building ( I can’t even have a Sky dish on my grade II listed house) I’ve seen inside because I used to go to a lot of the events in the Town Hall for which it was provided. Before HDC ‘hiked’ up the rental charge there was something being held there most Saturdays and in the week. Everyone I speak to (I know a lot of people in the town) want the community events back in their rightful place. Charities such as Cancer Research, Cats Protection,

problems in breaking even charities suffer enough in a recession without being deprived of such money as they could make. Surely if Bill’s Produce has indeed walked away from the deal, there is little point in keeping the hall closed when money could be made from it. It would be better than an empty hall and charities losing money; If the hall could be hired at a reasonable rate encouraging more people to use it. If the elections had taken place earlier it night have helped, as David Cameron once said that if the Conservatives won no more public buildings would be removed from community use. Miss R Reeve.s Blandford Road, Horsham Amnesty, Save the Children, W.I could all fundraise there. Also postcard and record fairs, antique markets, local art shows, music events etc, all affordable to all people; not all of us are high earners or want to live on credit! The Drill Hall is too far off the beaten track and I am sure that the manager or the Capitol Arts Centre would laugh anyone out of the place if they tried to hire it for a bazaar or jumble sale. I am determinedly and openly campaigning to save the Town Hall for myself and all the like minded people I speak to on the subject. After all, the Town Hall was given to the people of Horsham

by the Duke of Norfolk and paid for by us in our Council Tax and it is rather churlish of the Horsham District Council to just let someone else have it, so if Mr Reuben’s letter was meant to be a joke it was in very poor taste- this is no laughing matter.

W. Morriss (Mrs) Horsham

In the debate over the Town Hall, one group is seldom mentioned - the various charities who used it for fundraising events. I know of at least one which sometimes raised £900+ from a sale there. Since having to use a less central hall, things have gone downhill. It now has

Ed: Am I alone in thinking that this all has a touch of ‘Nirvana syndrome’ about it - people really only making a big deal out of something after it’s gone? Perhaps if Bill’s decide not to come on board (so far our calls have gone unanswered, but we believe that’s not yet the case) then perhaps a simple arrangement could be made. If the council will hand it back to the community, we must show that we want it and will use it. If we do, and it becomes a vibrant, popular venue, then great, everyone wins. But if after six months all we’ve had there is one rock gig, a cat homing show and a carpet sale, then perhaps it is time to allow the council to market the Town Hall without such resistance.

Missing Charlie My cat Charlie was taken from Charrington Way, Broadbridge Heath, about three years ago. Not a day goes by when I don’t wonder what happened to him and I know it’s a long shot but, just maybe, someone out there did find him and could at least let us know he is safe. He has a distinctive ‘nick’

in one of his ears. If anyone out there has any information please do get in touch. Lyn Roberts, Thelton Avenue, Broadbridge Heath Ed: If anyone can help call us here at The Resident and we’ll pass on Lyn’s full details.

Kayleigh and Molly Redford enjoy the visit by the Mobile Ark petting Zoo, and (right) George, Chloe and Timothy Sexton show their support for Sands (Pictures: Chris Woolgar)

In memory of a lost sister

Molly Redford wears a T-shirt in memory of her stillborn little sister

We all love a cake stall, don’t we?

On Saturday, Kayleigh and Molly Redford may have been helping their baby sister crawl for the first time. Instead, they were helping out at a charity fun day and fundraising auction at the Horsham Rugby Club to raise money in memory of their baby sister, Tilly Rose. On the 17th January, mum Gemma Redford gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Sadly, due to complications, Tilly had already passed away. Gemma’s siblings Timothy, George and Chloe Sexton decided to hold Saturday’s event following the tragic loss of their baby niece, in aid of Sands, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity. Sands were on hand to provide specialist support

for Gemma in January, and a private room in the hospital away from all the joys of the maternity ward. The charity fun day was a way of thanking Sands for all their help. Family entertainment in the afternoon included The Mobile Ark Petting Zoo, a BMX assault course set up by the Horsham Youth Cycling Club and a barbeque. The Embers provided the evening entertainment along with TORCH, The Original Rock Choir of Horsham. The charity auction was the main event and helped raise £1,900, meaning the day raise a fantastic £4,600 to be split between the Surrey Sands unit and the Sands national office. Local businesses donated lots for the auction as well as prizes for the raffle. George Sexton said: “Once

the weather cleared up it was a great day. The evening in particular went well, with the live music, bar and the charity auction. “It was great that the event was so well supported.” The organisers would particularly like to thank La Vida, Boots, Sassy shoes, Denbies Wine Estates, Fishers Farm Park, Rookwood Golf Course, KEF, WABI, the James Dyson Foundation and Richer Sounds for their support. Later this year, George Sexton and Chloe’s boyfriend Adam Lintott will be competing in the Great South Run for Sands, and next year they - along with Timothy - have an even more ambitious fundraising goal...a cross-Europe cycling challenge.

Home care review will save millions West Sussex County Council and NHS West Sussex will jointly be reviewing all home care contracting requirements across the county to look at long-term needs and how best to provide the service. At present the Council and NHS West Sussex commission more than one million domiciliary care hours per year from more than 100 external

but without additional funding to care for those who need it. “The review of the contracts we have for home care will enable us to buy care for residents who need it at a competitive price. “I would like to reassure residents that the quality and level of service will not be affected by these changes.” Home care helps people

“THE COUNCIL EXPECTS TO FIND A FURTHER £75MILLION OF SAVINGS”

organisations, at a cost of approximately £28 million. This means that there are significant variations in prices charged and capacity issues within the market. Deputy Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services Graham Tyler said: “West Sussex will have an increasingly elderly population over the coming years,

with personal care needs within their home. The County Council moved away from an in-house home care service with the launch of the Regaining Independence Support Service, providing short-term care and occupational therapy to help people remain independent in their own homes.

Home care is contracted through external organisations. Graham added: “The County Council is in the middle of a financial review and expects to have to find a further £75 million of savings over the next three years. “By making our home care service more efficient and effective, we aim to achieve a saving for the County Council of at least £2.5 million.” The County Council will carry out a review to identify the total home care requirements for residents, not only for adults’ services but also children and for NHS West Sussex. There will then be a tendering process to contract with home care providers to deliver current and future care needs. The new contracts are aimed to be in place starting from April 2011. All residents who have home care will be kept up to date as the work progresses.

Phil Collins tribute gig

No Jacket Required, the UK’s only 11piece Phil Collins Tribute, bring their spectacular show to Hurtwood Polo Park on Saturday 21st August. The line up is exactly the same as how Phil presented his live shows, with a full Brass Section, Percussion and Backing Vocalists. Their frontman, Collins-soundalike Dave Whitehouse, has to be heard to be believed, having taken on the mantle of Phil Collins for over ten years now, previously in Genesis tribute bands. With his exact rendition of Phil’s vocals, backed by extremely talented musicians, they authentically re-create the excitement of the 80’s & 90’s stadium shows, playing all the Phil Collins hits from down the years including Against All Odds, as well as a 15-minute Genesis Medley. For tickets (£10) all the Box Office on 01483-272828 or book online at www.hurtwoodparkpolo.co.uk

Nearly 1,500 Jobseekers The latest figures show that there are 1,460 people in the Horsham District claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance. July’s report into employment levels reveals that this is some way short of the 2,375 claiming in Crawley, but a touch above the number on Jobseeker’s Allowance in Mid Sussex district. Minister Chris Grayling this

week welcomed a further fall in unemployment, but said the UK still faced a significant economic challenge and Government would remain focused on restoring the economy and supporting private sector jobs growth. The figures published on Wednesday by the Office for National Statistics show that while the number of people in

employment has risen over the last quarter, this was largely driven by a rise in the employment of non UK nationals. Ministers are also concerned that the total number of people on the three main out of work benefits, almost 5 million, has remained static, underlining the need for a review of the welfare system.

news Mannings Heath squirrel still elusive, while wallabies are now a hidden marvel

white woodland wonders last month, raymond elliot from Branston, staffordshire, was prosecuted under the animal welfare act, and made to pay £1547 in costs to the rsPca, after drowning a wild grey squirrel in a water butt in his back garden. This landmark case was the first involving a non-domestic animal and immediately calls into question the value we place on urban mammals. Many homeowners see squirrels and other woodland creatures as pests that trespass on human soil, running riot through the streets like little hoodlums. But isn’t it about time that we learnt to love our fellow residents? Instead of drowning the squirrels that wonder its dense forest, Mannings Heath Golf Club in Horsham celebrates its wild inhabitants. The Club is extremely proud of its close links to a rare species of albino grey squirrel, which have been spotted darting through the surrounding woodland. The Mannings Heath logo

features an albino squirrel. Roy Jones, greenkeeper, is one of the lucky few to have seen one. He said: “Having worked at the golf club for 30 years, I have seen white squirrels on several occasions on the Waterfall and Kingfisher golf courses. “They are extraordinary looking animals. Other members of staff have seen them as recently as a few months ago.” Steve Slinger, General Manager, confirmed the sightings but has not yet seen one himself. He said: “As long as the squirrels are not causing any damage to the golf courses we are very happy to have them here. We do not see them as pests, we are fond of them.”

10,000 miles from its native home Tasmania, Australia. Leonardslee Gardens opened its Grade-I listed doors to the public for the last time this June after it was sold to an international businessman. Although its stunning grounds are closed to the public, a fascinating and popular attraction remains – the Bennett Wallaby. Closely related to kangaroos, Bennett Wallabies are athletic, cuddly looking creatures, known for their hardiness and calm nature. They can live up to 40 years, run up to 30mph and leap up to 6ft high. But Mary Davies, whose father owner Leonardslee Gardens until recently, has been caring for 28 of the gorgeous marsupials for the last 15 years and has grown very at-

tached to them. Her collection ranges from joeys to 15 year olds. She said: “I suppose I feel privileged to be looking after them. They are such unusual animals, all with their own individual personalities. They’re like humans in many ways.” Typically Bennett wallabies are greyish brown in colour but Mary also keeps the rare albino variety. Brilliant white and striking in appearance, they can fetch up to £1,000 if sold as pets. It was Mary’s great-greatgrandfather, naturalist Sir Edmund Loder acquired Leonardslee from his fatherin-law in 1889. Mary explained: “He immediately set to planning and planting the gardens. mals such as beavers, antelope, capybara and cavies. He was also responsible for introducing the wallabies which are still going strong today.” Sticking with white wonders, The Resident has seen on several occasions white fallow deer in St Leonard’s Forest, Horsham. While striking in appearance - particularly when hopping across a field covered in a layer of snow - but isn’t actually that rare. The white variety can be white to sandy coloured and become whiter at adulthood. This is a true colour variety and not albinism, which is rare. The rare white deer is the white-coated roebuck, and is so unusual that only a handful have been seen in Britain since the end of the Second World War. In 2009, one was found and was expected to fetch bids of £6,000 by trophy hunters wanting a rare kill. The news of the bidding war made national headlines, and animal rights campaigners were outraged, nicknaming the deer ‘Pearl. But local residents such as Mary Davies and the staff at Mannings Heath have learnt to embrace the unique species they have been graced with, and long may that continue.

John Barron celebrates his hat-trick for Horsham against Fletching

Johnny Phelps fired a quick 55 for Horsham

Double festival glory Horsham Trinity under 14s were victorious in the Shield Competition of Sussex Junior Cricket Festival. The win on Sunday against Bexhill was this team’s third consecutive Shield triumph, having beaten Arundel in last year’s Under-13s final. Trinity (pictured right) won the toss and batted first. After an initial flurry of runs against the Bexhill seamers, Trinity struggled against the slower bowlers and reached a mediocre 145 for 8. Top contributors were James Rogers 18, Connor Cushing 23 and Louie Donnely 37 n.o. In reply, Bexhill started confidently but Trinity switched to their slower bowlers and were rewarded with a flurry of wickets that shattered Bexhill hopes in swift order. James Rogers took three wickets for five runs turned things round for Trinity, leaving the pacey Louie Donnelly to clean up the tail, literally shattering the stumps with the final ball of the Bexhill innings. To reach the final Horsham Trinity won a hard fought contest at Pulborough on the Monday, with Alex Holmes

scoring a fine 62 n.o. On Tuesday, Trinity chased down a modest score from West Chiltington, James Rogers top scoring with 45. After a rest day Trinity played their hardest fixture of the week against a strong Steyning side. Trinity amassed an impressive 235 for 5 (Connor Cushing hitting an excellent 132). Steyning chased valiantly, coming up just 28 runs short for 7 wickets - a winning draw for Trinity. On the Friday Trinity brushed aside Scaynes Hill to confirm their place in Sunday’s final. Horsham and Roffey were again involved in the Bowl competition, Horsham looking to retain the title they won at U13 age group last season. Roffey were in Division B and had a week of mixed fortunes, with two wins and three defeats. On Monday they had a good start, beating St James’ Montefiore by five wickets. Bowling first they restricted St James to 170 all out. Ollie Rivers was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 19, and then scored 91 in Roffey’s innings - ably sup-

ported by Hugo Vickers on 26 not out. On Tuesday they batted first against Brighton and scored 137 all out (Tom Barnes 30, Jordan Bell 17) In reply Brighton & Hove reached their target in 26 overs, (Kyle Fairs 3 for 39) Wednesday saw them slump to an 8 wicket defeat by Steyning – Roffey were all out for 64 in 28 overs despite a spirited effort by Ollie Rivers who scored 27. Tom Barnes took 2 for 28. Thursday was a completely different story. Cuckfield won the toss and decided to bat,

scoring an impressive 204 all out. (Sam Collins taking 3 for 41 and Ollie Rivers 2 for 20) In reply Roffey reached their target with overs to spare and the loss of only 4 wickets. Ollie Rivers carried his bat, finishing on 106. On Friday the Roffey team travelled to Ansty, but were unable to get anywhere near the home side’s impressive total of 226 for 5, managing a respectable 121 all out in 39.4 overs in reply. (Ollie Rivers 36 not out and Jordan Bell 36) Meanwhile Horsham were drawn in division C, a slightly smaller group which was fur-

ther depleted by the late withdrawal of Three Bridges from the competition. Horsham got off to a flying start with an emphatic win at home to Fletching. The visitors posted a modest 113 – thanks to some tight bowling from David Drage (2 for 13) and a superb 4 for 5 in 3 overs from John Barron – including a hat- trick for the second year running in this competition! In reply Horsham knocked off the runs in 17.1 overs, with Jonny Phelps smashing a quick fire 55 which included 10 fours and one six. On Thursday, Horsham lost the toss and were put in to bat by Glynde and Beddingham. Openers John Barron (16) and Nick Klein (41) made a solid start and this was consolidated by an excellent partnership of 139, with Ben Shoare reaching 50 and Jonny Phelps scoring a magnificant 94 which included 14 fours. A final total of 251 was always going to be hard to beat and Glynde struggled against some excellent bowling and fielding – Matt Wilson taking 2 for 3 in 5 overs, Nick Klein 3 for 4 and David Drage 2 for 11

– to finish on 28 all out. Keeper Michael Thomas took an excellent catch diving low to his right, and Ben Shoare took a stunning catch at slip. On Friday Horsham travelled to Lewes Priory. The rain held off for Lewes to complete their innings, posting 186 runs. In reply Horsham were making good progress but the rain became progressively heavier and the game was eventually abandoned. Horsham’s overall results (including run rates and wickets taken) saw them through to the final at Ansty on Sunday against Brighton and Hove. Horsham lost the toss and were put into bat. They made a solid start but suffered a middle order wobble. They looked on course for a modest total until an impressive ninth wicket partnership saw Zac Chinn (32) and Hugh Turnbull (37 not out) push Horsham’s total to 201. This put the Brighton batsman under pressure and with consistently tight bowling they never looked like reaching the target, as Horsham retained the trophy.

Bring out the bunting for huge carnival day Can you remember the good old days when the community came together for one great day? When playschools and community groups created flamboyant, colourful floats for a parade, a young girl was beaming as the carnival queen, and a marching band led the way along a route adorned with flags and bunting? Well those days still exist in Ashington, and rather than slowly drifting away in a dearth of community spirit, this year’s event, on Saturday, 21st August, will be as big as ever. It all starts with a large carnival procession leaving

the top roundabout, north of Ashington at 1.30pm. Holding the Carnival Banner will be Dave Alford and David Jackson in costume. ‘The Surrey Pipe Band’ will be the leading band for the procession followed by the Ashington Carnival Princess Chloe Bull, 11 and her two Attendants Amy Burroughs, 10 and India Manville, 9 and her two Pageboys Cavan Sopp, 7 and James Newland, 5. The Festival will be held on Ashington Recreation Ground, Church Lane starting at 2.30pm after the arrival of the Carnival procession. There will be arena events with the main act being Stallions of Substance, an act that combines sisters, stallions and a little brother on a motorbike. The Wessex International Majorettes will do a dance routine, and ‘Charlie’ the clown will be there with lots of children’s entertainment. Other highlights include Nostalgia, a marching steel band with the St Kitts & Nevis Carnival Group joining in dancing with their colourful costumes.

In the Community Centre will be the Flower Show where you will be able to see a beautiful display of vegetables, flowers and craft items all to a very high standard. On the Recreation ground will be Harris Brothers’ funfair, a car boot sale, side-shows, craft and charity stalls, a fun dog show, a children’s farm with lots of animals to see and also ferrets and Bungee Trampolines. Near the Recreation ground will be an American and British Classic, Hot Rod and Custom Car Show. And there will be lots more. There will be food and a licensed bar for the afternoon and the evening. The evening continues with a live band playing outside, before a firework display at 10pm.

Anyone interested in entering the Carnival can call Ray on 01903 892931 or Margaret on 01903 892633. For details of entering the flower show call Maureen on 01403 242988 and for Car Show entries contact Alan on 01903 892756.

Fete success

Horsham Age Concern’s Summer Fete was a great success, as perfect weather and lots to do, buy and eat all combined to make a day to remember. Opened by local MP, Francis Maude (pictured above), who also judged the ‘Make a Scarecrow’ competition, the event raised over £3,000. “We need to continually raise funds in order to keep important facilities and services available to older people in these times of economic pressure with national and local government cut-backs expected”, commented Age Concern chairman, Vivien Lyth. “It’s good to see visitors of all ages coming to see what we have to offer here at Lavinia House. Also, we are always looking for potential volunteers”, she added. Jean Griffin, a local resident, well-known horticulture judge and regular on BBC Sussex Sunday morning programme, ‘Dig It’, sat in the garden answering a whole range of questions from a steady stream of interested gardeners. The various stalls were busy all morning and then there was a lull as visitors tucked in to the Ploughmans’ lunches and cups of tea whilst relaxing on the garden terrace with music provided by Ken Harvey.

Be ruthless and enjoy a new, clutter-free life Katrina Smith Keeping your home clutter-free...

Recently whilst having supper with a very good friend, she asked me if I would consider helping to declutter her home, especially her workroom and studio. she works from home and doesn't have the time or the inclination to do it herself and more to the point she can't move for “stuff”. This got me thinking – there are so many people out there surrounded by clutter, and not knowing where to start on the journey to a clutter free life. Feng shui Practisers believe that clutter drains energy from you. depending on the feng shui area of your home where your clutter is located, it can also negatively influence, or even completely block, the flow of events in specific areas of your life. so

it sounds like it really would be of benefit to my friend and possibly her business to rid herself of the clutter! in order to help you get started with decluttering and to regain your high energy levels i have put together a few tips on decluttering. 1. we very often hold on to things for emotional reasons, but do we really need to keep every birthday card, postcard, magazine we have received in the last few years? if you wanted you could always photograph the

postcards and birthday cards and keep a record of them on your PC. 2. Choose a day when the weather is fine, and move everything out of the room you are decluttering and take outside. i find it is always more invigorating to work in the fresh air rather than staying indoors. 3. sort your clutter into three piles – one for taking to the local tip, one for either donating to a charity shop or for selling on-line and the other all the items you want to keep. do be firm with yourself - if you haven't used something for the last twelve months the chances

are you never well, so get rid of it. 4. with the donate or sell pile – you must immediately deliver everything earmarked for the charity shop (do not be tempted to let it back in the house). Photograph everything to be sold on-line and get it on there. 5. now work on the “keep” pile. decide if it will go back in the same room. Perhaps have some labelled boxes on one side in which you can place items for different rooms. 6. Once all the clutter has gone, you can organise your room. For a fresh look perhaps re-arrange the furniture. Make sure you have enough storage for the items that are coming back to the room – you don't want to reclutter the room. decluttering your home or workplace can be so therapeutic. now you have tackled one room why not move on to the next? For further info contact Katrina on 01403 263509 or call www.truecoloursinteriors.co.uk

Oh, hold on... no, this really is just a pile of old waste recycling baskets. a recent initiative to collect and recycle no longer needed household recycling baskets is proving a great success. in the last few weeks, an estimated 400 baskets have been handed in to the collection point at horsham Matters Community Charity Centre in horsham and the message is being given that many more baskets are welcome. now that the final phase of the acorn Plus household refuse and recycling scheme has

been rolled out, the recycling baskets previously used by householders are now redundant. For horsham district residents not able to find another use for their baskets, horsham district Council, working with horsham Matters and Banner recycling, is continuing to offer a collection point in central horsham. unwanted baskets can be left at the horsham Matters Community Charity Centre, Tanfield Garage, Guildford road, horsham any time between 10am and 1pm, Tuesday to saturday. They will be collected for recycling by Banner recycling, a company based locally in henfield.

Town & village properties in Steyning Matthew Cattell recently joined the Steyning Office of H.J. Burt to work alongside Christina Smith who has been with the Town & Village Department of H.J. Burt for ten years. Although H.J. Burt is very well known for successfully selling a wide rage of rural properties, the town and

village departments in Steyning and Henfield are also very busy selling all types of properties, both old and new and from first time buyer flats and houses to a variety of family homes. With Matthew joining the Steyning office, the firm reports good activity across all price ranges. Matthew brings with him a

wealth of property experience having worked for another local independent firm of estate agents for twelve years. Working around the Storrington and Steyning areas Matthew has plenty of local knowledge which he can bring to his new position at Burts, and, in order to build on his very considerable experience, Matthew is also undertaking a degree in surveying aiming to become a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Whilst the property market still offers some challenges, there remain a number of able purchasers seeking properties in Steyning and the surrounding villages. Either Matthew or Christina would be very happy to discuss your requirements or to arrange a free market appraisal of your property and may be reached on 01903 879488 or via www. hjburt.co.uk.

Surf’s up Chevy

Chevrolet has pulled the wraps off a one-off special version of its top-selling Spark supermini, created to celebrate the brand’s American heritage and connection to youth culture. Spotted driving around Newquay, Cornwall, at the start of the annual Boardmasters surf, skate and music festival, the Spark Woody will go on to star at the grand final of this year’s Young? Creative? Chevrolet! arts competition, which takes place in Paris on the eve of the International Motor Show next month.

New low for drink driving fatalities The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has welcomed the fall in drink-drive deaths which has just been reported. Provisional statistics on accidents reported to the police involving drinking and driving in Britain in 2009, published yesterday by the Department for Transport, show that fatalities have fallen by five per cent to 380, from 400 in 2008. It is the first time drink-drive fatalities have fallen below 400 a year. Seriously injured casualties

“THE ISSUE OF DRUG DRIVING WILL SOON BE BROUGHT FRONT & CENTRE”

fell by nine per cent from 1,620 in 2008 to 1,480 in 2009; slight casualties resulting from drinkdrive accidents fell by eight per cent from 12,990 in 2008 to 11,990 last year. Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at RoSPA, said: “This reduction in casualty figures is very encouraging, and we are

pleased that the message that driving while under the influence of alcohol is dangerous and irresponsible seems to be getting through. “However, there is still much more work to be done - 380 people did not return home last year because of a drink driving accident. Now we are in the second

half of the year, our thoughts are turning to the fact that Christmas is a key time when it comes to road safety, and it is as important as ever to impress upon people that drink driving should not be an option.” With the cuts in public spending announced recently and being felt across the board, it is important that any reduction in spending on road safety does not

reverse this trend. RoSPA is urging the Government to implement the recommendations made by the North Review, published in June this year, which recommended that the drinkdrive limit is lowered from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The North Review also concluded that the drug-driving problem was “out of all proportion” to the official figures. This is partly because it is often difficult to test for drug use, meaning many cases go unrecorded. RoSPA has welcomed news that the Government has given the go-ahead for trialling new drug testing equipment over the next two years. Kevin Clinton commented: “The drink driving campaign has been very successful in terms of reducing the acceptability of drink driving in society; we hope that before too long, the issue of drug driving will be brought front and centre, and that people will begin to see this selfish and dangerous practice as equally unacceptable.”

Yeti’s all white

The Škoda Yeti drove off with the top award in the 2010 Auto Express New Car Awards, being named ‘Car of the Year’ by the top-selling weekly automotive magazine and website. Yeti was not alone in being honoured, however, as Škoda scooped a record-breaking five awards at the event. Joining Yeti in the winners’ circle were the Škoda hatch, named ‘Best Family Car’, and its sister model, the Superb Estate, named ‘Best Estate Car’.

Idea is Blessed

The voice of Brian Blessed will soon be bellowing out of your sat nav after a campaign on Facebook attracted over 25,000 members. Richard Gardner from Manchester decided he wanted his driving experience to be shoutier and more beardy. He launched a Facebook group called "Campaign to get Brian Blessed to do a voice-over for my sat nav" in April 2008. The group now has 25,772 members and TomTom has confirmed that te actor will soon be available as a Sat Nav option.

Goodwood gags Actors are playing their part in the magical step back in time that is the Goodwood Revival, the world’s most authentic historic motor sport meeting. Over 75 selected actors and actresses will add a sense of theatre to the Goodwood Revival, following an exhaustive round of auditions. These actors all become members of GAG, the Goodwood Actors Guild, set up specifically to add to the authentic atmosphere of the Revival. All Goodwood staff and GAG members dress in appropriate period clothing from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s – as do most of the Revival spectators – and each year more competitors and spectators get into the effervescent Goodwood spirit by dressing the part, considering it all part of the fun. All around the Goodwood Motor Circuit site, there are many actors, role-playing and acting out scenes from a bygone era. Spivs selling nylons and watches from beneath their coats; Mods and Rockers hanging out and dancing, then being ‘moved on’ by the local bobbies; comedic workmen preparing to dig a hole in the most inappropriate place; iconic figures such as ‘Diana Dors’; and even the Dad’s Army home guard are all to be found at the Revival.

Mini to go racing Mini will compete at selected rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) next year and will go on to contest the entire season from 2012 onwards. The car charged with this task is the MiniCountryman WRC, which is being developed by Prodrive, in close cooperation with Mini, and is based on the production model. The powerful heart of the racing car is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged engine from BMW Motorsport. The car complies with the new Super2000

in overall costs. The first test drive for the Mini Countryman WRC, which will also be available to customer teams, is planned for au-

regulations put in place by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which stipulate the use of turbo engines with 1,600 cc displacement and four-wheel drive combined with an increased emphasis on road relevant technologies.

ropean Rally Championship. Having already demonstrated the sporty character of its models in many countries in the Mini Challenge, the brand is now taking its presence in motorsport to a new level. Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, says: “Mini customers have always shown great interest in motorsport. I am convinced we will add a few more chapters to our success story in rallying. “This is a very exciting new motorsport programme,” said Prodrive Chairman, David Richards. “During the 1960s Mini captured the imagination of the world when the tiny car took on the might of V8 powered Fords and won what was then one of the toughest motorsport events, the 4000km Monte Carlo rally. “I believe our new Mini will become a firm favourite of the latest generation of rally fans, just as it is adored by its millions of owners across the world.” Prodrive has been working on developing the Mini Countryman WRC since early 2009.

Morrice Fours leave it late

The ladies at Cottesmore continue their success in golf competitions. The Morrice Fours Team - Linda Adamson, Irene Matheson, Iona McKean, Val Daniels, Brenda Williams and Annette Walsh won their quarter final match. They beat Slinfold 2-1 at Eastbourne Downs. The semi-final, against Seddlescombe will be played at Cooden Beach on Friday, 10th September. The Division 3 team won against the Nevill in the semi-final played at Chichester. It was a close and exciting match, most matches decided on the final 18th hole. Margaret Swatman, first out, won on the 18th, Pauline Kirkman, second, won on the 18th, Sandra Morfey, third out, also won on the 18th. The spectators watched a very nervous Peggy Beadell coming up to the 18th - also to win! Karen Stafford followed with a win so Gail Fee and Elsidale Armstrong were called in as the Cottesmore team became the winners. Jenny Frei and Margaret Swatman represented Cottesmore at the Jerdein Salver at Royal Eastbourne. Internal matches saw success in the silver division for Brenda Williams with 74 points and, second, Ann Morgan with 76 points in the July Medal. Bronze division was won by Margaret Swatman and second Mary Grange. Jean Thompson won the July Stableford with 41 points. The Rosina Smith trophy was won by Pat Johns with 41points. Karen Stafford, the ladies captain said: “The team spirit is high at Cottesmore and very much supported by other ladies of the section who turn up at external venues to support the teams. Their support is much appreciated by the teams.” Table Tennis

Horsham District Council has been helping Steyning Table Tennis Club to obtain grant funding, which will enable the development of the club. The club is celebrating after being awarded a £2,200 Grassroots grant from the Sussex Community Foundation. The money will be used to purchase new equipment that will support a recently agreed linkage with Steyning Grammar School’s Shooting Field site. The teachers are keen to improve table tennis as an extra curricular activity as it is an inclusive and accessible sport and hope to feed more talent into the local club's ranks. A total of £800 has also been secured from the Sports Unlimited fund for engaging professional coaches for kick-starting the plan. Horsham District Council's Leisure Link team provided advice and support for both successful bids and will be involved in supporting the delivery of the work. Horsham Leisure Link is the Council’s sports development team working in partnership with schools, parish councils, leisure centres, village halls, groups and individuals to develop and establish new accessible sport

Hornets shaping up In a good test of their prospects for the coming season, Horsham played their first home pre-season game at Gorings Mead against Southern League Premier Division side Oxford City. The recent rain had helped bring a touch of green to the pitch after an arid July and the weather remained changeable, varying from incredibly warm and humid under the summer sun to distinctly chilly as the rain crashed down. Horsham were quick out of the blocks and took the lead with a terrific goal after five minutes, a just reward for some neat build up play. Dean Wright was the scorer, collecting the ball in the penalty area from Steve Sargent, and creating himself some space before crashing home a sharp shot on the turn despite the close attentions of three defenders. It was a flash of brilliance

amongst a background of more prosaic endeavour as both sides worked hard and largely cancelled each other out, with chances on goal being at a premium. Mark Zawadski showed his agility on 38 minutes by tipping a long range pile-driver over the bar and Horsham nearly doubled their lead in the dying seconds of the half when Jay Lovett’s cross curled the wrong way and goalkeeper Paul Davies had to back-track quick time to catch the ball just before it sailed under the bar. At half-time Jahmahl King replaced the steady Graves, but it was the visitors who piled on the pressure as the rain increased in intensity. Zawadski made the save of the day when he got down low to hold on to a sharp daisy-cutter from Elliott Sandy. Horsham soon began to carve out chances. On the hour, Lovett broke through on the right and

laid the ball off to Craig Davies who shot straight at the keeper, and it was the winger who doubled Horsham’s lead on 66 minutes. After charging down the right wing and waiting at the byeline for support, Lovett suddenly decided to take things into his own hands, cut back into the penalty area, and drilled an angled shot into the far corner. Horsham came close to adding a third when Andrews’ header from Sargent’s corner beat the goal-

keeper but was hacked off the line by a covering de-

fender, and neither goal came under threat again as the game played out. It was a good result against a good team, with two fine goals and a clean sheet. With Pat Harding and Paul Kennett still to return to the team, the prospects for the new season, on this showing, were looking very fair.

Lower Beeding Lions re-united with Horsham Tigers for the second week running for a battle against another visiting German team in an international pre-season friendly. After the previous week's 8-1 victory, the English team comprising of Lions U15's and U14's, and Tigers U14's, seemed complacent from the offset at the Jolesfield ground in Partridge Green. Although the first goal of the match scored by Bradley Peters (Tigers), put England into the lead, poor defending led to an early equaliser. Eventually, the Germans (in blue) pushed on and won convincingly 4-1.

cottesmore chips in for our heroes

Horsham bowlers are blown away

horsham suffered rare back-to-back home defeats, with norfolk littlehampton and worthing pavilion both leaving with convincing victories. Horsham fared no better in their return away match to the Littlehampton club than the previous week. Despite losing 4 of the 6 rinks, the Horsham team thoroughly enjoyed the friendship of their counterparts and an interesting afternoon of bowling. Top rink for Horsham was David Grogan, Beryl Watson, Allan Robertson and skip Michael Bright (+11) with skip Mike Power close behind (+10) but Horsham lost 105-127. Against Worthing Pavilion on Monday, Horsham lost 73-137 Despite taking a 34 shot lead to Worthing, Horsham were unable to get to grips with a lightning fast green and a strong wind which carried many woods into the ditch. So the Friendship Cup once again resides with Worthing Pavilion, after a thoroughly deserved win by 30 shots overall. However, Horsham take comfort from the fact that the home side equally found conditions very difficult. Horsham’s sole winning rink was Bob Miles, Dave Gosling, Colin Watson and skip Bill Monckton (+4). Motor racing

Lady Legend

“through generosity and the lure of great prizes we were able to contribute £1,600” cottesmore hosted the reiMs charity golf day recently, helping to support help for heroes. Home members and many visiting from across some of the 30 Crown Golf Clubs made their way to Cottesmore Hotel Golf and Country Club for the 2nd Reims Champagne and Bordeaux sponsored charity stapleford on 24th August. Cottesmore through Crown Golf has developed a great relationship with the French golf operators NGF, specifically Club de Reims, and benefits from reciprocal playing discounts and prizes for events. The 2010 event was to offer the

best prizes to date with lots of Champagne and 5 star weekend breaks up for grabs as the players teed it up. Kate Marechal, tourism representative of NGF, was fundamental in the relationship and this year went all out when having to travel from Cornwall to Sussex via Normandy, collecting the last of the prizes for the day, in just 36 hours. Kate said: ‘This is a special relationship and we are pleased to be able to work with Cottesmore and Crown, especially when supporting such good charities and people like those at Cottesmore.” The 2010 Reims Charity event was this year linked as part of the

National Golf Club Challenge in aid of Help for Heroes. The NGCC was a co-ordinated effort across the golf industry to hold charity events for Help for Heroes in which Cottesmore as part of all Crown golf clubs involvement hopes to raise a significant sum. Nathan Miller, General Manager at Cottesmore, said: “We are pleased to be able to bring together such a well supported event and the sponsorship of Reims, with a national charity event like the NGCC supporting Help for Heroes. “We had over 120 players in the field and through their generosity

and the lure of great prizes from Reims and NGF we were able to contribute over £1,600 to Help for Heroes. “The formal donation will be made as part of the whole Crown Golf effort.” The day was a great success and at the end the worthy winners emerged and home advantage proved valuable. Cottesmore member Tony Cockerill took tops spot with 45 points, Second place went to Stephen Brice, 44 points, and third place was secured for the ladies by 2010 Cottesmore Ladies Captain Karen Stafford totalling 43. The three are pictured above.

Mets too strong for spirited Sox

PMW Communications Mustang League Yankees 2 v Athletics 8: Josh Sayer's grand slam home run powered the A's to their seventh win of the year, downing the Yankees by a score of 8-2. Sam Easter pitched two strong innings, holding the Yankees to a single run courtesy of a two base hit from James Castle bringing home Greg Kettle and striking out four to claim his first win of the season. Joe Riley made his pitching debut, throwing two solid innings in relief of Easter, allowing one run from Yankees James Castle and also striking out four. Sayer finished with five runs batted in, while Easter, Riley and Charlie Ridey also drove in runs. Mets 8 v Yankees 2 The second game of a double header had the Yankees starting well scoring 2 runs driven in by Castle and Greg Kettle in the first innings followed by pitcher James Castle back on form striking out 2 Mets with a great catch from Sarah Cannons, leaving the Mets with no runs scored. The Mets soon picked up the pace in the 2nd innings with a grand slam home run from Archie Darby and outstanding pitching from both Sam Bourne and Zac Hurry, racking up a total of 11 strikes between them ending in an 8-2 win.

Slinfold Country Club Bronco League Mets 22 v Redsox 2 The Redsox were thrashed by the Mets with a final score of 22-2. The Redsox fought to the end as always with some great play from both sides. Eamon Huijgens struck out 3 Mets in the 1st and Austin Harwood-Stamper stole from 1st base to second enabling him to get home and score the first Redsox run on an outfield hit by Jared Cox. Unfortunately Jared was out on 2nd base. The 2nd innings saw the mets score 6 as the last batter Anthony Puttock brought 2 home. The Mets scored the maximum 5 in the 3rd including a Home Run from Ollie Field bringing a 2 more runners home. Redsox player Simon Lawrence scored another home run in the 4th, his second in as many weeks with a fantastic out-of-the-park hit. Matt Hayden made two outs with some superior fielding in the 4th holding the mets to two runs. The Redsox carried on battling in the open 5th innings with the Mets only scoring 5 with two strikeouts by Jared Cox and a magnificent catch by Luc Bradley. However they were unable to get past the pitching of Mets Tom Bourne, striking out six, and finished the innings with no runs scored. Athletics 13 v Yankees 0 Adam Tod and Fred Olden both had superb games at the plate with each of them getting 3 runs and 3 R.B.I's. Sam Kneale was also on top of his game with a fantastic solo double play on first base in the 4th innings. The pitching duo of Will Chase and Will Anderson also had a great time at the mound shutting the Yankees out with a haul of 9 strikes.

Father and daughter shine in St Leonard’s Southern Motocross riders Andy Bolton and his daughter Jade were among the top performers in St Leonard’s Forest on Sunday. They both came first in two races of their three races and second in one, so both finished top in their respective classes. Andy topped the Pre-05s class,

ahead of main championship rival Joe Banks, with Chris West taking a good third. In the Pre-85s Championship, Steve Wells came out on top with James King second. James also lent his spare bike to Southwater rider John Lawrence, who was champion during the very first year of Southern Motocross back in 1982. His results were good enough for third on Sunday, ahead of Horsham’s Darren Maguire. In the Ladies Championship, Woking rider Jade Bolton dominated, taking first place ahead of Arundel’s Charlotte Williams and Dawn Burrows. There were other notable performances. Kurt Richardson (191) from Rudgwick, who was making a comeback after riding in the British Youth MXY2 where he broke his shoulder and sustained lung damage as well, performed well. He brought along his fans too, pictured left.

Other local riders included Rob Ticehurst and Tony Kirkby, enjoying their first taste of Motocross, and Dan Lawrence and Jeff Swabey from Southwater. Tony Ford of Southern Motocross said: “We started up really because we wanted to bring back what Motocross was all about. It’s about going out, having a good time with your mates, and if you win, great, but more importantly it’s about enjoying yourself. “We wanted to create a club that

has that friendly, welcoming feel and I think we’ve done that.” It would seem so - an age range that starts with several six year olds, right up to Ken Leon, an 80year-old who still loves to ride, tells you all you need to know about Southern Motocross. If you’re interested in riding, visit the club’s website, but we are asked to strongly advise any riders against using the Horsham track, located on private land, outside of actual competition.
