Countdown to Shelley Fountain’s Big Re-launch Monument to be fixed for May’s English Festival It’s been a turbulent year for Horsham’s Shelley Fountain, but it has been given a new lease of life by the council. Having been fenced off for a long period of time while its future was decided, maintenance work will soon begin in earnest to restore the Rising Universe or Shelley Fountain - to its former glory. The fountain is expected to be repaired by early May, in time for one of Horsham’s biggest annual events - The English Festival (8th-9th May). Horsham District Council made the decision to repair the

notable landmark at its Council meeting in December, having also looked at options to remove or replace it. The council said that this option was chosen as the most cost effective way forward as well as preserving this unique piece of public art for the town. Ultimately, getting rid of the fountain and replacing it, even just with paving slabs, was going to be as costly as fixing it. The repairs will cost £30,000 and will be funded by the council. Brewers Hall and Woodhouse have contributed £2,000 towards the repair bill. The mechanics of the fountain will be overhauled from the end of March and, once running again, the water feature will flush less frequently so as to reduce wear and tear. While many will be pleased to see the fountain’s water features working again, the town will not be united in its rejoice. Last year, a public vote on the district council’s website revealed that almost two thirds of residents wanted it removed forever!

A Greener future We thought we were fairly good recyclers here - adapting pretty well to the introduction of blue bins and even saving margarine tubs for a local school. That was until we saw on BBC News recently a story about a Gloucestershire family who put out only one dustbin in a whole year! Feeling slightly shamed, perhaps we’ll be at the launch of the Greening Horsham Campaign on Saturday 6th March 11am to 1pm, at the Parkside Suite, County Hall North, Park Street (next to the Black Jug pub). At the event there will be demonstrations of how residents can, individually and collectively, do much to save money, energy, natural resources and Co2, and help protect the planet for our children’s children. Greening is about incorporating small changes into our everyday lives. Simple things that everyone can do. Things that will not cost a penny but will save money and improve our carbon footprint. Horsham residents will receive a Challenge Card inside their next edition of the Horsham District News – delivered through their letter boxes in the next few weeks. There are eight simple challenges from which residents are invited to select five, and

demonstrate their commitment by displaying the card in their front window. It takes just one person in a community to raise their hand and say they want to reduce the effects of climate change. That one hand will be joined by other hands and to-

gether those hands will (re)build a community that is more sustainable, will reduce its effect on climate change, and will create a plan for adapting to a future in a changed climate. Many people want to do something about climate change but just

don’t know where to start. The Campaign aims to harness the power of the whole community, working together, trying to engage everyone, not just the green bunnies! For more information visit www.greeninghorsham.org.uk

Most of the images of the Pancake Races were taken by Toby Phillips and can be purchased from his website at http://www.tobyphillipsphotography.co.uk/ Toby will be making a donation to the Rotary Club from sales of the pictures

It’s still Marvel-lous Word spread like wild fire around Horsham on Tuesday afteroon - the new Marvel action movie, starring the biggest comic book heroes of all time, was being filmed in Horsham town centre. Or was it a group of campaigners from Fathers for Justice, armed with frying pans for protection from the police? No, it was just some staff from Harris Lord Recruitment in big pants! Truth be told, it was a miserable day on Tuesday. The rain was relentless, and if it didn’t completely dampen the Pancake Day races in the Carfax, it certainly took the shine off. It’s a pity, as the organisers at Horsham Rotary Club and the teams that took part in the event deserved a great deal better. Nonetheless, it was far from a disaster. Most of the teams turned up - in fancy dress, and the fans’ favourite (there were a few cheering from the sides!) won the final. The Great Pancake Race attracted 23 teams with 92 par-

ticipants. Whilst this was primarily a fun lunchtime, the desire of many teams to win made it highly competitive with the Harris Lord Recruitment team - cheered on by colleagues from an office overlooking the Carfax -running out the eventual winners and receiving the Sainsbury’s Cup and medals as their reward. A team from Music Bus won the Best Fancy Dress Trophy sponsored by The NonStop Party Shop, and The Amber Foundation won the Rotary Charity Shield for the winning Charity Team. This year there was a new trophy presented by Rawlison Butler - The Judges’

Special Award. This was for the member of the winning team who could flip pancakes for the longest time. This was won by Matt Botterman. As well as gaini n g per-

sonal pride, the teams were also running for charity with the proceeds of the event being divided between St Catherine’s Hospice as the charity nominated by the winning team and the joint most nominated charity (they will receive £225); the Phoenix Stroke Club as the other most nominated charity (£75); and donations from the Rotary Club to other highly nominated charities being Chestnut Tree Hospice (£40), RSPCA (£40) and Born Free (£40). This year there were also walking races for children which unfortunately were somewhat disrupted by the weather, but which will result in £30 being donated to the NSPCC and the Horsham Diabetes Group. Pancake races set for a bright future The Pancake Races may not have enjoyed the good weather of last year’s inaugural event, but it looks set to remain a fixture on the town’s events calendar. Apart from one unfortunate participant who took a tumble (thankfully the woman involved in the nasty looking fall suffered nothing more serious than cuts and bruises), the organisers declared the event a great success. Horsham District Council’s Town Centres Manager, Garry Mortimer-Cook, who worked with Horsham’s Rotary Club to organise the event, said: “This was another great example of what we can achieve with activities in the town centre by working in partnership and huge credit must go to the Horsham Rotary team and all of the business people that took

part. “This was a fantastic turn o u t a n d gives everyo n e in the

town something to build on for future pancake races and, I hope, our town events throughout the year. “Our next big festival event will be Piazza Italia over the Easter weekend and we aim to get even more local businesses involved, having fun and maximising their business opportunities from the event.” The Rotary Club would like to thank all of the stall holders for adding to the fun and spirit of the whole day, and also to all of the sponsors Ringway, Sainsbury's, Non-Stop Party Shop, Rawlinson Butler, as well as Horsham Markets, Mercury FM, Peach Entertainments, and the cast of The Dream Maker Musical.

Team Strada enjoyed themselves, entertaining the crowd between races, while The Southern Housing Group team (top) also didn’t take the day too seriously...

Young stars shine on The achievements of young people were celebrated at Horsham Youth Centre on 5th February. The Horsham Area Youth awards only lasted two hours, but had taken over three months to prepare. The organising committee consisted of Peter Allen, Gary West, Shawn Streeter, Sam Richardson, Jaz Hewitt, Beth McDonald, Chloe Henderson, Ché Stokes, Ben Perrie and Chris Bush, who are all from the youth groups in the area. Together they designed the invitat i o n s , programmes and served food and drink to the guests.

Jaz and B e t h were r e -

sponsible for booking the live acts and making sure that everything went ahead on schedule during the event. There were 15 awards in total, the first being the Best Volunteer in a Community Project, won by Tyler Zarins. He‘s campaigned for a safer skate park in Billingshurst, winning the support of the local Parish Council by organising a petition gathering support amongst the community. PSCO Adrian Bell of Billingshurst commented that “it encourages others to get involved in the community.” The award for Best Volunteer in a Project Placement went to Xavier Parry who has completed over 500 hours of voluntary

service and fundraising efforts for the Springboard project. Tom Viney won an award for the Best Volunteer in a Youth Club’ for his involvement in the ROCK-HYC, a live music event in the Horsham Youth Centre, and also for being instrumental in the delivery of the Summer Road shows. Polly Cherriman was recognised for her hard work in the refurbishment of the Henfield Guides Hut kitchen by receiving the award for the Most Innovative Youth Opportunity Funded Project’ accompanied by a £30 voucher. Polly said: “We can get some new things for the kitchen now.” Callum Hopkins, from Roffey, was overwhelmed after

winning the award for ‘Most Participation in Youth Activities (male)’. When asked how being a part of a youth club has affected him, he said: “Youth workers are very supportive and inspire you not to give up.” Daisy Murrell won the female award whilst Roffey Youth Centre won the award for ‘Most Successful New Youth Club or Project’. The ‘Most Inspirational Young Person’ went to Laura Gorton, who juggles looking after her one-year-old child and a degree in engineering and still finds time to offer support to a teenage mothers group in Horsham Youth Centre. Among the special awards presented by Ann Ball was

Kirsty McCloughan for Services to the Community and Debbie Slaughter (Centre Manager for Henfield Youth Centre) won the Special Staff Award. Horsham MP Francis Maude MP was impressed with the evening, commenting: “Lots of people think young people aren’t interested, these events show that this isn’t true. “Furthermore this event shows how young people shouldn’t all be tarred with the same brush.” Below: The awards night organising committee Left: Singer Taygan Paxton plays her acoustic guitar Report: Elena Morgan Photographs: Emily Wilders

Youth Club too popular! With more than 250 members, the youth club at Broadbridge Heath is enjoying continuing popularity and now more volunteers are needed to staff the club. Broadbridge Heath Youth Club provides local young people, aged 12 to 15 years, with a safe, sociable and enjoyable environment and runs every Friday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. Each session costs £1 and young people are welcome to turn up on the night but will need to register. The club is run by three West Sussex County Council qualified youth workers as well as volunteers from the local community. The management committee was able to employ a third youth worker thanks to a generous grant from Broadbridge Heath Parish Council, enabling the youth club to increase

the number of young people it can accommodate. More youth work volunteers are needed, and anyone interested should contact Liz Kerim, Locality Youth Worker for West Sussex Youth Service, 01403 263832. There are currently more than 150 boys and 100 girls registered with the club. Of these, 95 per cent are residents of the Broadbridge Health parish. Each week the youth club welcomes around 85 young people. Activities at the youth club include football, cricket, unihoc, basketball, athletics and netball as well as art and crafts activities. For more information about the youth club, or to become a youth work volunteer, contact Clare Ebelewicz on 01403 215137 or email community.development@horsham.gov.uk

Event bound to succ-seed Last Saturday saw many keen gardeners and allotment holders descend on the Friends Meeting House for the first Seedy Saturday. Many people brought their own special seeds collected from a wide variety of flowers and vegetables and there was a good selection to choose from. Along with the seeds there were display boards and plants from Transition Horsham, a stall with information, leaflets and good advice from Horsham Organic Gardeners.

Horsham Museum had a very tempting selection of seeds from their lovely garden and honey to sell. Another stall had relevant second hand books and a novel way of making pots out of newspaper. The homemade cakes proved popular with people chatting over seed cake. Event organiser Maggie Weir-Wilson said: “It was a very successful first Seedy Saturday and so this coming Autumn remember to collect your favourite seeds, as there will be another event.

Let’s take stock Potholes really are springing up everywhere. Unbelievably, the Daytona 500 - the greatest Stock Car race in America, was delayed for two hours because of a pothole. And even then, it caused two stoppages in the race, as some fans called the race a farce as the cars couldn’t overtake around half the track! Meanwhile in Clacton, one driver ended up crashing through a fence and ending up in a farmer’s field after hitting a pothole, and in Gloucestershire garages have reported an ‘epidemic’ level of car damage. So it’s not just us suffering then! This week, West Sussex County Council announced it is to boost its spending on repairing potholes by another £228,000. The move follows a review of the money the

County Council will receive from council tax during 2010/2011. The additional money will come from the Mid Sussex area, and is mainly due to an increase in the taxbase for that area – households that will be paying council tax. West Sussex County Council was told on Friday (Feb 12) that the number of households in Mid Sussex has increased by 140 more than first expected, raising the taxbase equivalent to 57,166 Band D properties. Council Leader Henry Smith (below), proposed that the £228,000 should be earmarked for pothole repairs. He said: “In the days leading up to the budget meeting, the finance team is constantly checking the taxbase for the entire county, and we will be receiving £228,000 more than was first anticipated. “I am pleased that the Council

Last month we mocked up this image of Evel Knievel jumping over a huge pothole agreed with me that this money should be used to accelerate the programme of pothole repairs in the new financial year. “I am certain that this is something that our residents will welcome.” The County Council has already pumped £2.35million into tackling potholes caused by the recent severe weather conditions. There are currently 30 teams repairing approximately 500 holes per day. Once a pothole is reported the County Council aims to repair it within 28 days and for

urgent defects on A and B roads within three working days. The repair teams are being directed to the routes where the greatest numbers of dangerous holes exist. Repairs are listed and worked through in the order they are reported, however, potholes that have reached a depth of 100mm and holes on A and B roads are prioritised as they carry the greatest flow of traffic.

Hepworth’s story Hepworth & Co was opened in 2000 by Andy Hepworth, former Head Brewer of King & Barnes, John Tewson, Paul Webb and Tim Goacher. Now employing 20 staff at their base in Nightingale Road, Horsham, Hepworth & Co. produce beers and lagers of distinction in cask, keg and bottle, using locally sourced ingredients where v e r possible. Y o u may have enjoyed a H e p worth’s pint at one of the local pubs, or even at a town centre event - they are strong supporters of town centre events. Using barley and hops grown in our home county, Hepworth's Sussex at 3.5% abv is a traditional pale ale with a hoppy character. Other well-known brews include Pullman, a bitter with a crisp bite, Prospect, brewed using organically grown malt and Admiral and Golding hops, Old Ale, a dark and malty beer, and Iron Horse, a premium bitter with a dense flavour Hepworth’s organic lager, Blonde, has been a big success. Its crisp, fresh flavour makes it a perfect accompaniment to all kinds of food.

Hepworth’s toasts major drink award It’ll be easy to celebrate!” joked Andy Hepworth after scooping a prestigious Taste of Sussex Award. Hepworth and Company, Horsham’s oldest brewery, has won the award of Best Drink Producer in Sussex. Head Brewer and Managing Director Andrew Hepworth said: “I’m staggered - a good condition for a brewer! “The competition was very stiff – there are 20 breweries in Sussex, and the judgi n g w a s very thor-

ough. We won the same award in 2007- 2008, so to win it again for 2009-2010 is a fantastic accolade.” Taste of Sussex seeks to promote the excellence of local produce and food related activities in the food industry, both in production and retail. Andy thoroughly agrees, and in his acceptance speech at the National Golf centre in East Sussex he paid tribute to local farmers for the quality of their crops and their commitment to regional requirements. “For example, beer needs a very particular type of malt and farmers have to guarantee that they can meet the specifications. Sussex farmers and hop growers are the greatest, and that’s a big part of the reason we are the Best Brew in Sussex.” Celebrations though were tinged with sadness at the glamorous Awards ceremony. Seven food and drink heroes received their trophies, but it was also announced that the Sussex Farmer of the Year 2009/10, voted for by the

public, was Simon Bishop from Battle, who tragically died in a car accident last November. Over 9,000 people voted for more than 300 Sussex food and drink businesses and personalities in this fourth year of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards, which is run by Natural PR with A Taste of Sussex, part of Sussex Enterprise and JustBIZ web solutions.

Other winners were: Prosperity Brownies (Sussex Food Producer of the Year); Meads Village Butchers (Sussex Butcher of the Year); Uckfield Farmers Market (best Sussex Farmers Market); Anise, Felbridge Hotel & Spa (Best Sussex Eating Experience); Olliver Darby, Temptation (Sussex Young Chef of the Year); Cheese Please (Sussex Food Shop of the Year)

Council Tax rises for storms ahead West Sussex County Council today (Friday, February 12th) approved a 2.5 percent increase in council tax for the coming financial year. The decision means that the average Band D tax for 2010/2011 will be £1,161.99 compared with the current £1,133,64 – an increase of 55p a week. Louise Goldsmith, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said after the decision: “The budget has been drawn up against a very difficult background, and we have kept our tax rise down to the absolute minimum. “I want to stress again that being able to deliver our lowest council tax increase since the system started is mainly due to our own good housekeeping. “Despite all our representations, we will receive £125 from the Government per head of population towards front line services compared with a national average of £201. “If we had the same level of grant increase as the highest for a County Council, then we would be talking about a one per cent increase. “One of the main reasons for being able to consider a 2.5 per cent increase is the fact that the County Council has made huge efficiency savings totalling around £40 million to date, and we are looking to reduce our costs in the next financial year by a further £22 million.” Louise said budget highlights included £7.2 million to meet the cost pressures being faced by the County Council in caring for looked

free personal care at home. There will also be £7.1 million in the special revenue reserve fund. Louise explained: “There is still a great deal of financial uncertainty, and we are determined to make sure that we have a fund that covers all eventualities. “There are more economic storms ahead, and if the roof breaks we will be able to mend it.” The budget strategy includes a reduction in core borrowing for non-schools capital spending over the next three financial years – going down from the current £30 million to £20 million in each of the next two financial years and £19 million in the third year. Louise said: “I am very keen to see the debt burden on our taxpayers reduced. “We would have moved even faster to get below £20 million for capital schemes had it not been for the need to ensure we invest in road maintenance following the damage caused by the severe winter, and the fact we are unlikely to get support from the Government.”

HDC also decides

Horsham District Council also agreed its budget at a meeting last Thursday (Feb 11th). Members of its cabinet committee agreed to a 2% increase for its services. We know that for many people it’s all quite confusing. So imagine that for each £1 council tax you pay,

75p goes to West Sussex County Council (who deal with matters such as education, roads and transport etc), while about half the rest goes to Horsham District Council (who provide refuse collection, leisure services etc) and the rest is split between the police and fire services.

The local council is often complaining about how little money they get from Central Government. Even on West Sussex County Council’s website, there’s a page called ‘Where d o e s y o u r money go?’ which states: ‘This year’s governm e n t grant for people living in West Sussex is £726 per head.

‘That’s £931 less cash per head than they forked out for people living in Manchester, who get £1657. ‘No wonder West Sussex keeps complaining about the way government grants are shared out among local councils.’ But if we’re honest, it wouldn’t be a very good system if the rich areas - and that’s us - took as much back as the poorer areas. And perhaps they need it more up there, where people like Liam Gallagher can’t tell the difference between a gold Brits statue and somebody dressed up as one! Besides, WSCC isn’t that badly off - it currently has invested £184million of surplus funds... The answer then is no, we’re not hard done by, but it doesn’t do WSCC any harm to pretend we are...

Voices translate nicely Horsham was alive with the sound of international music at the weekend. ‘Voice Event’, an awardwinning, energetic young choir from Freiburg, South Germany, lit up the town with an extensive repertoire of Pop, Jazz & Gospel songs. Voice Event is a mixed choir of students between the ages of 15 and 21 years old. Their Choral Director is Christian Geugelin, who founded the choir ten years ago. Voice Event was invited to visit Horsham by Kaytie Harding, Creative Director of Voice From The Coal Shed. Kaytie runs choirs and singing projects in Horsham, specifically for the terrified and those who think they can’t sing. Kaytie said: “I met Christian two years ago when I was working in Lörrach. I loved his choir, and talking to Christian, I realised

he thought just as I did about singing - it's not what it sounds like but what it feels like. “Voice Event is proof of it because when they sing they feel great and that makes them sound great!” Voice Event kicked off their itinerary by singing on the Carfax bandstand on Saturday . In the afternoon, Christian & Kaytie held an Open Singing Workshop at St Leonards Church, Cambridge Rd, and on Saturday night Voice Event took centre stage at a Fun & Fabulous Concert, also featuring choirs ‘Coal Shed Rock’ and ‘Divas Undaunted’ at Forest School, Horsham. On Sunday Voice Event performed in a Gospel Concert at St John the Evangelist Church, with St John’s Gospel Choir. Voice Event were then invited to a farewell reception at Horsham District Council on Monday.

Everybody Helps

Horsham Lions

Helping Haiti There’s been an incredible effort by local businesses and individuals to help those affected by the devastating Earthquake in Haiti. That effort is typified by the staff at Fisher Clinical Services, on the Langhurstwood Road near Horsham. It wasn’t so much the efforts of a small number of determined individuals - but a small effort by many that will have a big impact. Some, such as gypsy, turkey and nun Jo Watkinson, Gina Simms and Hanna Edwards, put in a few pounds to wear fancy dress. Others chose to buy Noodles cooked by the canteen staff and trolleyed around various departments, while others baked cakes, washed cars or donated a gift to the

tombola. And in the end, the social committee declared that £1,500 had been raised through the fundraising day last Friday (12th February). T h e Managing Director, J o h n Bath,

did not escape either - employees offered to sponsor him to work in the company's secondary packaging department, a challenge he will take up this week. Said John Bath, "This was a wonderful initiative by Hayley (Roth, o r -

ganiser), her colleagues, and all our people who took part and gave so generously. It was great to see the company pulling together so well in the name of such a good cause. “We collected nearly £1,500 in employee contributions, a tremendous effort, and the company will match this to bring the total to £3,000. “ It was also encouraging to see many local firms and independent businesses responding to requests from Fisher Clinical services a major provider of packaging and distribution services for the pharmaceutical industry - for raffle donations. Among those donating were Between The Lines, Wakefields Jewellers, Bag Etc, Purdies, Goodacres, M&J News, The Fragrance Shop, Comodor Restaurant, junction 33, The Party Shop, The China Shop (In Middle Street), The Cook Shop and Al Naseeb, while Lisa Batch donated two hand made necklaces. Hayley Roth, who helped organise events, said: “The generosity from the small firms and independents was incredible. Because of the quality of the donations we raised a huge amount on the raffle alone. “We would like to thank all of those who made donations, and all of the staff who gave money on the day.”

Horsham Lions Club have donated £500 to aid earthquake victims in Haiti. The money has been sent to Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) and will be used together with money donated by Lions from around the world, currently over $2 million for long term relief in Haiti building schools and homes. President of Horsham Lions Club, Andy Spriggs, said: “When Horsham Lions Club donate money to help worldwide disasters we always give to LCIF as we know that all money is

Poptastic debut Guilty Pleasurez Cisswood House 12th February

“From the moment the intro music blasted out the classic 1970s ‘Top of the pops’ theme tune, you knew immediately that the ‘Guilty Pleasurez’ show was going to be one heck of a nostalgia trip! The band, mainly based in Sussex, consist of six incredible musicians and singers who proceeded to spend the next two hours taking the near capacity audience on a groovy ‘poptastic’ roller coaster ride of all those glorious hits from a golden era of music. The show was simply jam packed with chart topping tunes, and the audience were clearly revelling in having their memories awakened time and time again. Decked out in splendid 1970s clothing the band looked as if they had just came from the set of ‘Life on Mars’. From the storming opening of Wings’ ‘Jet’, through Greg Hart’s ‘voicebox guitar’ on Peter Frampton’s ‘Show me the Way’, the band were clearly having a

ball. Indeed, on the amazing rendition of Leo Sayer’s ‘When I Need you’, featuring premier league vocals from ‘Dizzy Rascal’s’ Sam Blue and blonde bombshell Janey Smith, it became very clear that this band are a class act. The vocal harmonies throughout the show shone brighter than Noddy Holder’s mirrored hat!

However, it was when the band closed their first set with John Miles’ monster hit ‘Music’ that the sheer brilliance of the band really hit home. Possibly the only band ever to attempt such a huge song live, the orchestral epic was a jaw dropping highlight, and the crowd roared with approval as Sam hit ‘that’ monster note at the finale.

Returning for a second set, Guilty Pleasurez really turned on the groove, and had the crowd dancing anywhere they could. With supreme keyboardist Andy Stewart using his ‘vocoder’ to great effect on ELO and 10cc, Gary Williams’ bass thundering a back beat of enormous proportions alongside drummer Mick Neaves, it was a non stop Juke Box of all those tunes you just hate to admit you love! Yes, I saw rockers in AC/DC tee shirts bopping to Cliff Richard, I saw middle age men swoon over Janey singing Abba’s ‘SOS’, and the entire crowd took over completely on Queen’s ‘Don’t Stop me Now’. Guilty Pleasurez promised a night of total nostalgia and fun and this they delivered in spades. If this debut gig is anything to go by, the band are destined to become the hottest ticket in town wherever they play. So get out your dancing trousers, and get along to a Guilty Pleasurez gig! They are poptastic! Music for a 'Jackie' generation! Submitted review by Terry Tinsel

Alfie’s here!

It’s proving to be a fantastic season of entertainment at the Capitol Theatre in Horsham. We have great local talent on display in forthcoming productions by HAODS, Act Too, Horsham Symphony Orchestra, Slinfold Concert Band and Tanbridge House School. And the theatre also welcomes big names, such as Pam Ayres, Tony Benn, and recently Lesley Joseph in Hot Flush. In addition to all of this, Horsham has attracted some of the best plays by the finest production companies in the country, and Alfie falls very much into that category. This spring, Berkshire-based Blackeyed Theatre Company brings to the stage a brand new production of Bill Naughton’s classic, Alfie. The production, which tours to theatres across England and Scotland, promises a fresh and innovative interpretation of the play. Made famous by movies starring Michael Caine and more recently Jude Law, Alfie is the

brilliant, original stage play about a young man with an overwhelming desire for the ladies. You might say that ‘birds’ are irresistible to him, sort of second nature. There's Ruby - ‘A lust box in beautiful condition’; Clare ‘You're all lathered in sweat, Alfie’; and Siddie, and Clara, and Annie - but who's counting? Certainly not Alfie. Three in one evening if necessary. And necessary is the right word! Alfie c o m bines great come d y a n d genuine

pathos, as well as live 60s music, as it tells the story of a cockney ‘Don Juan’ who swaggers and philosophises his way from conquest to conquest, carefully r e -

jecting anyone or anything that might touch him too deeply. Bringing together the same artistic team behind Blackeyed Theatre’s highly acclaimed national tour of Oh What A Lovely War in 2008, Alfie promises captivating performances, fabulous design and great live music. Blackeyed Theatre, which is supported in this production by South Hill Park Arts Centre in Bracknell, is a nationallyrenowned producer of challenging mid-scale touring theatre.

New residents welcomed at nature reserve, writes Linda Slattery

Mice surprise at Warnham reserve The Visitor Centre at Warnham Local Nature Reserve has some new residents! Wardens at the reserve were given the opportunity to acquire some Harvest Mice from a captive breeding program at The Nature Centre at Tilgate Park. Friends of Warnham LNR were pleased to be able to provide funds for two vivariums to house the mice. These came largely from money donated through the Waitrose “Community Matters” scheme, and we thank Waitrose and their customers for their generosity and support. The vivariums have been set up in the Exhibition Room at the visitor Centre and a group of three mice have already been installed in one of them. Visitors of a nervous disposition where mice are concerned have nothing to fear – they are kept safely behind locked glass doors! Harvest Mice are tiny, agile creatures with small furry ears, sensitive whiskers and a long prehensile tail, which is used to grip the stems of vegetation as they climb in search of food. They are the UK's smallest rodent, weighing only about 6 grams, the same as a 50 pence

piece. In the wild they are usually found in tall vegetation round field margins and hedgerows or in reedbeds, living on seeds, berries and sometimes small insects. Their nests are small, round balls carefully woven from grasses high up among the plant stems. They are still to be found locally but their numbers are declining, mainly as a result of modern farming methods which leave fewer hedgerows to live in. In captivity, care has to be taken about selecting individuals to form a colony. Harvest Mice are matriarchal, it is the females that are 'in charge', and keeping more than one adult female together may result in fights. Our first colony at Warnham is made up of one female and two males, although providing they take to their new home the numbers could be increasing quite soon. The wardens plan to release offspring back to the wild at Chesworth Farm. Although quite secretive, the mice are active in the daytime as well as at night and can be seen in the Visitor Centre on most days, so do come along and make the acquaintance of our new residents.

The general manager of the Chilean mint has been sacked after thousands of coins were issued with the name of the country spelt wrongly. The 50-peso coins - worth about 6p - were issued in 2008, but no-one noticed the mistake until late last year, reports the BBC. Instead of C-H-I-L-E, the coins

had C-H-I-I-E stamped on them. The coins have since become collectors' items and the mint says it has no plans to take them out of circulation.

Slight growth suggests a difficult recovery

Clive Hancocks from Mortgage Solutions Limited comments on the latest base rate decision. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) once again surprised no-one retaining the Bank Base Rate (BBR) at 0.5%

for February resulting in the BBR remaining unchanged for the 11th consecutive month and also as expected announcing that they have ended the Quantitative Easing programme for the time being. The wider UK economy has recently reported a modest return to growth in the final quarter of 2009 but the 0.1% rise in the nation’s gross domestic product was short of most forecaster’s expectations and suggests that the recovery will be slow and difficult for the foreseeable future. With the growth figures below par it is more likely that the MPC will be reluctant to raise interest rates in the short term for fear of derailing the economy and tipping it back into negative territory but most expectations are that rates will have to rise and

many economists suggest a bank base rate rise during 2010. January and early February has continued to see the major mortgage lenders competing for business and this is evidenced by the rise in the number of mortgage products typically available to intermediaries rising to a 12 month high of more 3,500 deals. Not only have the number of products increased quite significantly but many lenders have been re-pricing and cutting rates weekly and some twice weekly demonstrating that they are increasingly looking for business and this is resulting in some great deals out there for buyers and those looking to refinance their current arrangements. With the Skipton B.S recently announcing their deci-

sion to raise their standard variable rate (SVR) from 3.5% to 4.95% and several other lenders following close on their heels (and using the negative press that this generated to deflect their own announcements) many borrowers will now be looking more closely at their re-mortgage options available to them. This decision by the Skipton and others demonstrates that even though we have had no change in BBR lenders have to make commercial decisions concerning interest rates and these can be applied without warning and can prove costly for borrowers. In the last month we have seen a small increase in the proportion of business that is re-mortgage and we would expect to see this continue for the following reason.

Most mortgage borrowers will want to have an element of certainty regarding their monthly repayments. They can do this by fixing their mortgage (generally for a finite period, 2, 3 or 5 years) or by linking their mortgage to an indices like the BBR via a tracker mortgage. In the case of a tracker deal this means that their repayments will change but only by the amount of increase (or decrease) in the BBR. Several lenders do have SVR’s where the rate of interest charged is linked to a specific margin differential over the BBR as in the case of C&G where their SVR is currently no more than 2% over and above the BBR. Where a lenders SVR has no guaranteed linkage to the BBR borrowers are very much at the

mercy of the lender as demonstrated by the recent Skipton decision and as a consequence we would expect and encourage more borrowers look to investigate the re-mortgage options that are potentially open to them. With Nationwide recently reporting that average house prices have risen by more than 8% in the last twelve months many more borrowers will have seen their equity levels restored allowing them to take advantage of some very competitive re-mortgage deals now available. Research reveals strong local demand

Tenant demand for rental properties is on the increase in the Horsham area, according to the latest research by Countrywide, the UK’s largest letting agent and property services Group, which shows that new enquiries for rental properties increased by 94% in January. Local letting agents King & Chasemore took part in a the UK-wide research, which revealed that there is now an average of 2.9 tenants vying for every property – a 16 % increase since the end of 2009. Closer to home, King & Chasemore report a growing increase in demand from tenants for properties in North and Central Horsham with 2.6 tenants vying for every property across East & West Sussex. Chris Robinson, Senior Lettings Manager said: “We are seeing a build up tenant demand in Horsham and the surrounding villages, which is causing properties to be snapped up within days of coming onto the market. “Homeowners looking to

let their properties should contact their local King & Chasemore branch to discuss what options are available to gain the best levels of additional income from their property through an ARLA approved agent.” Over 82% of the 200 branches surveyed by Countrywide Residential Lettings have seen an increase in the number of tenants requesting short term contracts as house sellers turn to renting to rental to bridge the gap before finding their next house. John Hards, Countrywide Residential Lettings, CoManaging Director said: “We are seeing a growing number of tenant enquiries from house hunters caught between house sales, having successfully sold their property but unable to find somewhere else to purchase. As buyers currently outweigh the number of properties on the market, househunters looking for a flexible solution are being driven to the rental sector to bridge the gap.” Please contact your local King & Chasemore branch to book a free rental market valuation for your property by calling 01403 271630 or visit www.propertywide.co.uk

High levels of Letting

Leaders reports an unprecedented level of new lets in January, following on from an exceptionally busy December. The Horsham branch exceeded their lettings forecast by a significant margin and broke their branch record for the total number of properties let in a month. Both lettings consultants, Alex Heather and Neil Simmons, also achieved new

personal bests in the number of properties they let. Says senior branch manager, Kathy Taylor: “We have seen an unprecedented level of demand in the last couple of months and are extremely proud to have coped with the demand and also for maintaining our high levels of customer service that we pride ourselves on. Audi A1 gears up for Geneva debut

Audi has shrink-wrapped everything it stands for to create the new A1, a more compact and city-friendly three-door premium hatchback that delivers all the celebrated quality, design flair and engineering acumen synonymous with Vorsprung durch Technik in a more concentrated form. The A1 is set to make its World debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and will be available to order in the UK from May for late 2010 deliveries. Closely following the look of 2007’s critically acclaimed Audi A1 project quattro design study, the production-ready A1 distils the essence of Audi into a sleek, streamlined body with an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.32 which occupies a road ‘footprint’ of less than four metres, without sacrificing space for four adults and their luggage. Inside, as out, the look and feel of the materials epitomises Vorsprung durch Technik, as does the on-board technology. This includes the latest, ultra-efficient TDI and TFSI engines backed up by startstop and recuperation systems,

stateof-the-art ESP with a new electronic differential lock and archetypal convenience features such as the optional Multi Media Interface (MMI) infotainment system. Not surprisingly the most space efficient Audi in the range employs the most compact and fuel efficient Audi engines, all of which compensate very effectively for their relatively small displacements with the latest turbo charger technology. The new 1.2 TFSI petrol engine linked exclusively to a five-speed manual transmission kicks off the range, its 86PS and 160Nm peak power and torque outputs enabling a 0-62mph time of 12.1 seconds and a 111mph top speed, delivered with 55.4mpg capability and low CO2 of 119g/km*. The more familiar 1.4 TFSI power unit is next up, and delivers its 122PS and 200Nm via the standard six-speed manual gearbox or the optional seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission. Equipped with S tronic it takes the A1 to 62mph in 9.1 seconds, and on to 124mph where condi-

tions a l l o w, and in this form can match its smaller counterpart on economy and emissions, delivering up to 55.4mpg with CO2 output of 119g/km*. Already renowned for creating the premium sector’s most fuel-efficient car – the A3 1.6-litre TDI – the 105PS 1.6-litre diesel is the third engine option, and via a fivespeed manual gearbox uses its impressive 250Nm torque output to power the A1 to 62mph in 10.8 seconds and on to a 116mph top speed. Depending on which specification level is chosen from the SE, Sport and S line options available in the UK, the suspension controls either 15-inch, 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels and has either a standard setting for the SE, a stiffer Sport configuration with lowered ride height or an even more sporting S

line set-up. The vast majority of the familiar Audi appointments will either be fitted as standard or optional. Standard features will include alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric front windows and mirrors, remote central locking, a single CD audio system and split folding rear seats. Prices for the A1 in the UK have yet to be finalised, but are expected to start at around £13,000. Full details will be available nearer to its world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

A Porsche 911 GT3 R with innovative hybrid drive will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. After its debut in Switzerland, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be tested in long-distance races around the Nürburgring, Germany. The highlight of this test programme will be the 24 Hours race around the 14-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit on 15/16 May.

Vauxhall will unveil not one, but two cars at this year’s Geneva Motor Show on March 2. We’ll see the world premieres of the all-new Meriva compact MPV and a futuristic concept car, which is set to boost the company’s credentials as a leader in environmental vehicles. Bolstering this message still further at the show will be the groundbreaking Ampera (above) extended-range electric vehicle and Vauxhall’s most economical production car to date, the latest Corsa ecoFLEX.

The wait is over – the Nissan Juke has been unveiled to the world. We all rejoice as one! Nissan has revealed a ground-breaking new model that brings all the benefits of the Qashqai in a more compact package. It’ll make its public debut until next month’s Geneva Motor Show, Adding another valuable addition to the UK’s biggest car plant, the Juke will be built right here in Britain alongside its Qashqai big brother. It’ll be ready to go on sale in the UK in October 2010.

Five Alive!

Little Deutsche Coupe

The “5 by Peugeot” concept car is another indication of the changing face of Peugeot and provides an insight into the Marque’s future ambitions in the large luxury vehicle segment. Its pure and elegant lines blend with subtle technical detailing to create an overall effect of a timeless, exclusive and modern design. Powered by Peugeot’s HYbrid4 technology, it ensures both high levels of driving enjoyment and environmental protection - 200 bhp, four-wheel drive and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km or zero in electric mode.

BMW has introduced a Competition Package for its classleading BMW M3 Coupé to enhance the model’s unparalleled driving dynamics. The new Competition Package comprises a revised Electronic Damper Control with a new Sport setting which, when cou-

pled with the 10mm lower suspension, improves the standard car’s already dynamic handling. A Dynamic Stability Control Plus system with subtly less electronic intervention than before allows for a more enthusiastic driving style. Exclusively designed 19-inch light alloy wheels,

inspired by the popular E46 M3 CSL, complete the package. The Competition Package is priced at £3,315 in addition to the standard BMW M3 Coupé’s £52,730 OTR price. At the same time Auto StartStop technology comes as standard to all versions of BMW’s M3.

The Coupé, Convertible and Saloon already feature Brake Energy Regeneration, lightweight engineering principles and ondemand use of ancillary systems to enhance all round efficiency. All BMW M3 models equipped with the system go on sale 20 March, 2010.

Ferrari honour

The Ferrari 458 Italia has been declared “Supercar of the Year” by GQ Magazine. The magazine described the newest addition to the Ferrari range as “a motor that elicits the most primal response from all who see it, while moving engineering on to a whole new level”, with the engine in particular being described as a “masterpiece”. The GQ Magazine award comes on the back of another recent award from BBC Top Gear Magazine which voted the Ferrari 458 Italia not only their “Supercar of the Year” but their overall “Car of the Year”.

The all-new Volvo S60 makes its international debut at the Geneva Motor Show. In its overall shape, the all-new S60 is a coupé; sportier and more distinct than any previous Volvo. The S60 range will be available from launch with a choice of two diesels and one petrol engine, including an uprated high-perfor-

Big Screen Legends 13

The Mini was already a popular car in 1969, but The Italian Job is what helped make the car a legend in Europe. According to the director's commentary on the DVD, despite the huge publicity the film would give to the Mini, the car's maker, BMC, were not completely committed to the project. By contrast, Fiat grasped the commercial potential of the film and offered the production team as many supercharged Fiat cars as they needed, several sports cars plus a cash lump sum of $50,000, but the producers turned down the offer because it would have meant replacing the Minis with

Fiats. The stars of The Italian Job were three Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper S's, in red, white and blue of course. The distinct characteristics are their unique 'Moustache' grill trim, sliding windows, external door hinges, early type boot locks, hinged number plates and hook-type door handles. At the hands of L'Equipe Remy Julienne's stunt drivers they became legends. No-one really knows what happened to the fleet of surviving Minis that were used on the set. As far as figures go, the production crew bought 6 Coopers and an extra 25 Mini's from Switzerland, but

it's unsure how many of these were Coopers or regular Minis. Approximately sixteen Cooper S's were used during filming. The Cooper's that were thrown out of the coach were regular Minis dressed up like Coopers. Ken Morris, one of the last of the production crew members to leave after filming in Turin stated that there were six surviving Mini's and 30 sets of mag wheels in the lock up garage that they were using. He said that he locked up and headed for the UK, and as far as he was aware neither Paramount or production company Oakhurst returned to collect them!

mance 3.0-litre T6 petrol version with 304bhp, a 2.4-litre 205bhp D5 and a 2.0-litre 163bhp D3 powerplant. A DRIVe version powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine with CO2 emissions of approximately 115g/km and fuel economy of up to 65.7mpg (combined cycle, preliminary figure) will join the

range later in 2011. It is being introduced with a range of exterior colours including two new shades: Vibrant Copper and Electrum Gold. A highly advanced braking system is an important part of the dynamic driving properties of the all-new S60. At launch, the S60 range will

be available with a choice of two diesels and one petrol engine. All the engines have been developed to meet the highest demands on sporty, dynamic driving with competitive fuel consumption. Full UK specification, technical details and prices will be announced at a later date.

Backs to the wall time for Steyning Steyning beat Billingshurst in the Identilam Cricket League last week, while Three Bridges comfortably beat Capel. Only Luke Drage and James Humpries managed double figures as the Three Bridges bowling attack continued to impress, with Oliver Blandford finishing with 2-9. Then batsman M Blandford hit an unbeaten 21, to put Bridges in an unassailable position, and they ran out easy winners with six overs to spare. Although Ashley Smith

and Joe Buckingham started brightly, things started to go wrong for Capel D when Ashley was run out,and Joe had to retire, leaving two new batsmen at the crease. This enabled the Broadbridge Heath bowlers to take control, and led by Josh Tolhurst [2-26], they dismissed Capel in the eleventh over. In reply, Capel looked to have the game wrapped up, when they had Heath at 34-5 in the sixth over, with only Josh Tolhurst standing between them and victory. A few Wides narrowed the gap, and gave Josh the confi-

dence to carry his bat to victory. A much improved Billingshurst side restricted Steyning to 100-5, who were much indebted to Jonny Burfiend [36*] who took 18 from the last over. When Billingshurst batted, wickets fell regulary, but Rob Weston [22] and Dan Macdonald [15], kept up the required run rate, and the game went to the last ball when Billingshurst required six to win. With Steyning’s fielders all defending the back wall, they could only muster two, and the last wicket fell as they at-

tempted a suicidal second run. For up to date League Tables and further information please visit www.identilamccl.play-cricket.com RESULTS

Potts pair are perfect

Tommy Guns down rivals Worthing & Horsham Cup (Sunday league) Player Manager Tommy Di Martino did the Italian Job on Sunday, inspiring his team to a 8-1 victory over local rivals Southwater in the Worthing & Horsham Cup. Missing a number of players Horsham Juventus started off patiently and after a few half chances finally took the lead when Paul 'PJ' Williams reacted the quickest to poke home after the visitors keeper spilled the ball. Juve doubled there lead minutes later when Ali Harvey found Charlie Hodgson unmarked on the edge of the area, and with a curling shot beat the stretching keeper. Southwater struggled to get into the game and could have gone further behind when a Harvey header hitting the post and a Shawn Findlay shot rebounded off the crossbar, but they did manage to get back into the game just before halftime when Matt Brabon scored a wonder goal from outside the area. Horsham Juve started the second half well and Harvey's pinpoint cross found Joe

Holvey at the back post to header home, leaping like a salmon. The home side were running riot and a quick through ball from Jamie Maddox found Hodgson on the half way line and his ball over the top found Findlay to finish. Juve's fifth was scored when a diagonal ball found Hodgson at the back post and his header found man of the match Di Martino to sweep home. Di Martino (who actually doesn’t speak Italian!) was again involved in the action when his through ball found the on-rushing Damon Aston to fire past the visitors keeper. After having missed a few chances a long Maddox kick found Holvey who played in Findlay to score his 18th goal of the season and at the death Di Martino scored his second. Division 2 North

The previously unbeaten league leaders Holbrook were toppled by a great team performance from Alfold. Alfold looked the more lively from kick off and were passing the ball around with confidence. The goal came 18 minutes in when a free kick from 30 yards out by Ben Smith was met by a fine header from Russell Thorne, whose goal bound effort was parried by

the keeper, only for Simon Poore to follow up and score. This ignited the game further as it turned into a real classic with both sides showing much passion and desire, and the supporters were treated to a game of high quality football. An organised and committed display from all 11 Alfold players ensured Holbrook were restricted to long range shots. As the game went on Holbrook threw bodies forward and came closest to an equaliser with 15minutes to go, when a shot was cleared off the line by Jason Bailey following a goal mouth scramble. The final whistle went and one of the few remaining unbeaten records in the West Sussex League had gone much to the delight of the home support. Alfold manager Paul Cooper said afterwards: “ The lads all worked their socks off from the first whistle right to the end. The pace of the game from both sides at times was frantic and I wondered how long it could go on at that rate – but it did, right up until the end so fitness levels were really tested. “Defensively we were superb and shut up shop once the goal had been scored, with every player closing the ball down and doing a job. It was a great advert for Division 2 football. It wouldn’t

have looked out of place at a higher level, and the result allows us to continue building the foundations that are being laid here.”

AFC Roffey's poor run continued as they suffered their second league defeat on the bounce losing 3-2 against an improving Pulborough side. AFC's slow start to the game meant the visitors came out on top in the opening exchanges with Roffey unable to string two passes together. The away side’s dominance soon paid off and when Roffey failed to clear a corner it was Pulborough who reacted the quickest from the rebound to go in front. AFC response couldn't have been better and within minutes AFC equalised when Scott Shorey beat the offside trap and when one on one with keeper he unselfishly crossed to Gavin Fowler to tap home. Wayne Ells somehow missed for AFC from 3 yards out, and soon after Pulborough were back in front. The second half was an even affair but it was the Pulborough who increased their lead further when poor marking by Roffey allowed there player time to pick his spot and finish well. Roffey squandered several chances, but did pull one back when another Shorey effort

was saved and Fowler was on hand to convert the rebound for his second. Division 3 North

Cowfold Reserves made it nine wins from nine in the league with a fine 5-0 win over local rivals Southwater Reserves. Cowfold got off to the best possible start by taking the lead in the first minute through Scott Lancastlee. And ‘Fold didn’t have to wait long for the second. A great ball from Chris Bellison released Graham Light down the right flank, and his inch perfect cross was meet by Michael Nash to put fold 2 up within five minutes. Fold continued to dominate the first half creating chance after chance and it was Southwater old boy Chris Bellison who made it three with his first goal for the club on 35 minutes. Graham Light then saw his great effort smash the crossbar before Tom Whiting hit a post, but Nash grabbed his second of the game to make it four right on half time. Southwater battled hard in the second half but just couldn’t break the Fold down. Southwater’s ‘keeper made three great saves to keep the score respectable but he could do nothing in the dying minutes to stop Nash getting his hat-trick.

Despite the snow and freezing temperatures, 13 pairs from Cottesmore Golf and Country Club’s Junior Academy braved the elements to play nine holes of the toughest of golfing formats – foursomes. The winter Adult/Junior Foursome’s competition took place on the Phoenix Course on Sunday 14th February. A tough format it may be, playing alternate shots but the joy was most juniors played with their fathers or grandfathers. Only one junior, 8-year old Egor Zotov, played with his mother. The game was played off the blue tees and a quarter of the combined adult/junior handicap The weather and wet conditions may have been against them but the scoring was outstanding. Harry Potts, aged 11, and his father, Lawrence, squeezed into first place with an outstanding net 24 (5 under par). Jack Vincent, aged 13, and his father Marc had to settle for second place after disaster struck them on the last hole. They had a three shot lead at the ninth tee but added eight on the last hole! Even so they matched the winners’ 24 but lost out on count back. In third place just one shot behind were Jordan Leaver (13) and her grandfather Brian Crossey. Just missing out on the medals was seven-year old Josh Dance who with his grandfather Tom Smallwood scored a net 26 – three under par. Calum Callan, the Head Professional at Cottesmore said: “This has proved a popular event bringing back to the game out some parents who haven’t played for a number of years. This format is a great learning curve; it introduces the juniors to a competitive environment, teaches teamwork, different scoring and course etiquette – all in a fun way.” Callan started Cottesmore’s Junior Academy two years ago and it is growing from strength to strength with over 40 active youngsters taking part in the coaching programmes and tournaments. A game of two halves! Youth Football Under 12 Girls What a difference a week makes for Horsham Sparrows’ Under 12 Girls team. After an inconsistent showing last week, there was no shortage of passion and commitment as the girls took on Oakwood, a team just above Sparrows in the league table. Sparrows had Francesca in goal, Chloe and Georgina taking on defensive duties, Keyannea, Charlotte and Lucy in midfield and Sienna leading the pack up front. Sparrows piled on the pressure from the off and went for goal. All the action was in the Oakwood goal mouth but against the run of play, Oakwood counter attacked and an unlucky clearance saw the ball fall very kindly to Oakwood who managed to slip the ball underneath Francesca. But Sparrows heads did not drop and the girls went in search of an equaliser. Hope was denied an almost certain goal by a fantastic save by Oakwood’s keeper. Was it going to be one of those days? It was starting to look like it as an Oakwood player placed a very well directed shot into the bottom corner for 2-0 at half time. A quick change around in personnel saw Ellie lead the pack up front and Georgia come in to help with defensive duties. In the second half sparrows

were first to every ball, battled in every challenge, and all of the players wanted to take a victory home. A delightful movement saw Ellie break free and she buried the ball into the back of the net! The girls, now having regained their ‘mojo’, went in search of number 2. It wasn’t long before Chloe chipped in with one of her trademark power blasts which the keeper didn’t have a chance with saving to make it 2-2. Sparrows kept Oakwood on the back foot with constant pressure. It wasn’t long before Lucy latched on to a set piece which saw Horsham take the lead, 3 -2. Things were looking up. Keyannea then made it 4-2, a stinging shot proving too much for the Oakwood ‘keeper who could only drop it into the net. Oakwood weren’t down and out yet, as they wanted to retain the 4th spot in the league and pulled out a great move which saw them draw one back. But Sparrows shut up shop and kept things tight and simple. The final whistle went and Sparrows took all 3 points moving into 4th place in the league. Horsham Youth comfortably beat Sompting Youth on Sunday. As the rain started to come down both teams got stuck in. The pitch was quite heavy so

Horsham Sparrows Under 12 Girls are now preparing for their semi-final showdown playing the ball around proved hard. But Horsham soon started to control the game. But it was not until the 28th minute that Horsham made the break though with a well taken goal from Zak Comber. In the second half Horsham started well. Horsham brought on George Hole 10 minutes in to the half and in the 52nd minute he got on to the score sheet. Horsham were playing some neat football and kept the ball in the Sompting half. The game was rounded off with Zak's second hat-trick in the last two games to make it 5-0.

He added a second soon after to see Royals take the lead and when Tristam Smith was fouled in the box, Jacob Waller converted the spot kick. The second half saw Copthorne come back into the game with a 25 yard corker of a free kick, but Tom Frankland restored the 2 goal cushion for Royals. Jake Legrange then got his hat-trick and then his fourth to ensure a comfortable win. Connor Cushing was instrumental in midfield, with Zac Love, Alex Taylor & Josh Wood impressing as well.

camped in the Dorking half, it took 20 minutes and a wonder strike from Zac Malinsky to break Dorking down. George Hole then clicked in to gear, and added two quick solo goals just before the break to make it 3-0. In the second half Roffey relaxed and played some superb football, and the goals followed. Another great strike from Zac Malinsky made it 4-0, and further goals from Max Lewis, Dan Goddard, Connor Pollard, Matt Sigrist and George Holes hat-trick, made it a very comfortable afternoon for Roffey. Zac Malinsky and Josh Coleman were outstanding as Roffey eventually won 9-0.

Under 9 league Match 1: Royal Utd Under-9s came through a hard battle with Steyning Strikers. It was Steyning who had the better of the first half and were rewarded for their efforts by taking the lead on 15 minutes with a long range effort giving Callum Smith no chance in the Royals goal.

With the half coming to a close Jack Frankland latched on to a Will Dorman pass and drilled in the equaliser. In the second half Royals found a new gear and started to create some good openings, but found the Steyning goalkeeper in good form. It was royals that got the break with eight minutes to go. Morgan Spooner broke down the left cut inside his shot was too powerful for the keeper to hold and it fell kindly for Frankland to poke into the net. Match 2: The second game was started in much the same way as the first, but it was Royals who took the lead through Harry Whibley. Steyning had some good chances to get the equaliser before the break, but found Tom Baxter in good form. The second half was all Royals and within minutes they doubled their lead through Spooner. Whibley then grabbed his second of the game to make it 3–0. Morgan then went on get a further 3 goals and a good strike from Jack Woolgar-Leith made the final score 7–0.

Nick Moss heads home from a corner as Slinfold take an early advantage

REPORT: NICK HIND; PICTURES: CHRIS WOOLGAR

Draw is Taylor made A cold mid February afternoon was brought to life by an absorbing meeting between Slinfold Reserves and Horsham Crusaders. This Division 5 Central clash ended all square at 2-2, with both teams missing the chance to close in on the League leaders, Cowfold 3rds, who now have a 7 point lead at the top of the table. Their styles could not have been further apart, Slinfold dogged, durable and determined; the Crusaders swift, sharp and swashbuckling. But the opposing styles produced an enthralling match that could have gone either way right up to the final whistle. A game of set piece goals saw Slinfold twice take the lead only to be pegged back each time by the youthful Crusaders who never know when they’re beaten.

Surprisingly it was Slinfold who opened up the scoring against the run of play. A well delivered corner from the left was met by Nick Moss, the small man out-jumping all his peers as he nodded in from 6 yards out. Stuart Cole, Slinfold Captain, could have doubled the lead after the break, letting 2 g l o r i o u s chances go begging as the home t e a m

looked to put the game to bed. But his wastefulness was immediately punished as the Crusaders countered at break-neck speed to win a corner from which Centre Half Dan Vinten slammed home the equaliser. The away team, buoyed by the leveller, began to turn the screw. The fitness levels of youth were far superior to that of the wheezy, 30-something Slinfold team. The home side responded by dropping into a 4-5-1; and were soaking up the torrent of Crusaders attacks with relative ease when Darren Penticost’s instinctive finish, from yet another set piece, re-gained the lead for Slinfold with 15 minutes to go. The last quarter was all about the Crusaders as they laid siege in search

of the equaliser. Numerous half chances went begging without any clear cut opportunities arising. Ryan Taylor lacked composure when shooting tamely at Fold Keeper, Matt Shuttlewood, when 1 on 1; and only Matt Mason will know how he spooned over from 2 yards out, a drop kick to put Jonny Wilkinson to shame! Just when you thought an ailing home side had done enough to earn the 3 points, Ryan Taylor, in a carbon copy of his earlier chance, found the right finish to slot past the advancing Shuttlewood to secure a point for his team. With Stuart Cole, Slinfold player manager, playing a full 90, and Steve Greening, Crusaders’ boss, coming on for the last quarter just shy of his 50th birthday, it was difficult to get a few sound-bites from them after the game, but in between hyper-ventilating and mild palpitations, both managers agreed the draw was the ‘fair result’.
