Ann Bathie with one of her sunflowers that has been ripped up by youngsters at Bennetts Road allotments
Wanton destruction at town allotments Two weeks ago Ray and Ann Bathie were amongst the list of winners of the Horsham In Bloom competition. The couple’s prize allotment in Bennetts Road impressed the judges and scooped Gold. But now the allotments are not so pleasant on the eye, after a group of teenage boys embarked on a trail of “wanton destruction” through the allotments. Most of us can understand that most teenagers, of any era, are occasionally guilty of apparently mindless acts of spontaneous silliness- especially this week, when A Level and GCSE results are dropped through letter boxes. But it’s difficult to justify what has happened at Bennetts Road allotments - as it’s not a couple of random
acts by bored teens - they appear to have made their way around the allotments for some time. Ray and Ann’s sunflowers have been pulled up, heads smashed off, perhaps while being used for play fights. Runner bean racks have been knocked over, nets pulled off over covered vegetables, tomato plants ripped up, pumpkins tossed about and sweetcorn and carrots yanked from the soil. Ann said: “They don’t seem to understand that gardeners only get one shot. Things don’t grow back after a week or two - this is a culmination of a year’s work. “A lot of people have been able to repair some of the damage but for others there’s little they can do. “One area of our allotment
looked as though a herd of animals had trampled through it.” Ray added: “People spend a lot of time up there growing vegetables and take a lot of care and then it is ruined,
night’s destruction - those responsible were seen by a member of the allotments fleeing to a nearby house. They later received a visit from the police. Those that use the allot-

Many of the allotment owners were up at the site on Tuesday and Wednesday repairing some of the damage, but many others were still not aware of the damage done. But there is one positive to come from Monday
ments hope that this will put an end to the occasional carnage caused by careless kids. Peter Cox, secretary of Bennetts Road Allotments, said: “It’s been an annoyance. This has been happening for a few years and it’s happened twice in two weeks. But credit to the police, they arrived very quickly and spoke to them. “Hopefully this will be the end of it.”

Our first time in the dark
It’s a city way of living shops opening in the evening to support and feed off a thriving dining out scene. But that is exactly what business chiefs and local traders hope can happen here in horsham. Together with the support of horsham’s town centre shops and restaurants, horsham Unlimited - a collective of local businesses and town leaders - plan to launch a regular monthly late night shopping and dining evening. The initiative goes by the far from catching name of ‘horsham’s First Thursday’ but there is an ambitious target behind the idea - to make horsham the shopping and restaurant destination of west sussex. The timing isn’t perfect - it would have been nice to have launched it at the start of the year, but horsham was not ready. now we have new businesses in place - wabi and carmela restaurants, white stuff clothing, Just my sushi, raspberry laces, martha’s Barn, a re-fit strada, and per-
haps most importantly a nearly completed resurfacing of east street. The work is not completed yet - the road surface is almost there but the pavement needs to be brought into line.
and it is hoped that the new look area, in which pedestrians will share the road with transport in an integrated street system, will help attract
Unlimited said: “The focus of horsham’s First Thursday is to provide specialist advice and knowledge through a number of different events which will enhance the shopping and dining experience in horsham. “we want people to want to come into horsham after hours, and spend some quality time with our traders learning about fashion, beauty, food and more. “we want people to enjoy dining in horsham and experience the versatility of our menus that perhaps they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.” it is hoped that the town’s first horsham’s First Thursday (see, the name is even

While the numbers lining the streets this year were down due to the poor weather, even those who didn’t fancy standing in the rain showed their support by standing in doorways and waving at those in the parade. The act combines sisters, stallions and two young boys on a motorbike (one nine year old doubles as the health and safety official, we’re told!) demonstrating trust between horses and riders in an act of great skill. Creative Covers’ played throughout the evening and there were still hundreds of people at the recreation ground to witness another excellent fireworks display at 10pm with a child-frighteningly excellent finale! The display was supported by Winner Plant Hire. Margaret Alfold of the Ashington Festival Organising committee said: “It was again

Comedian spearheading Ventriloquist revival is coming to Horsham’s Capitol
He’s a comedian, dummy! the resident hates ventriloquist acts. not just Keith Harris, orville and that song, but all of them. Except the ones on Harry Hill, but they’re not real... The moment a performer pulls one out of the bag, you can sense the metaphoric lead balloon among the audience. There’s no groaning, as we’re too polite generally, but it’s like an impersonator doing Frank Spencer. It’s painful to watch. We had heard snippets of a couple of comedians -Nina Conti and Paul Zerdin , making a name for themselves in new takes on the ventriloquist act at the Edinburgh Fringe, but were not convinced. Knowing Paul Zerdin was coming to Horsham’s Capitol theatre soon, we thought we would watch a clip of his routine on YouTube. A minute in and we’re sort of bored already. But then something strange happens.
We laughed...a lot! We won’t spoil it (although you can spoil it for yourself, of course!) but we’re a lot more excited about Paul Zerdin’s visit now. Here the comedian himself tells us his thoughts before the show at the Capitol on Sunday, 10th October.
How did you get started in ventriloquism? The funny answer is that I started playing with dolls when I was very young because I had no friends. The more serious answer is that I was given a book on how to be a ventriloquist and I learnt from that. The process really started when I was 8 or
“i did A douBle Act WitH Bruce forsYtH WHere He WAs A HuMAn duMMY” 9. I was given the classic Christmas present of a box of magic tricks and I really took to it and I decided then that I wanted to be a magician.
But, I was also a huge fan of The Muppets and Sesame Street and I knew I wanted to do something with puppet

characters.
Magic and ventriloquism took over from this point didn’t they? Yes, I left school with just two GCSEs which was a result of me not caring about schoolwork and being more interested in showbiz and making money doing close-up magic in restaurants and hotels at weekends and performing at kids parties too.
What happened after you failed your exams? I managed to get a part-time job in a magic shop called Davenports Magic which is very famous and has been running for over 100 years. I made a lot of contacts there and went to see an agent who told me that I definitely had something but that she had loads of magicians on her books, what did I have that was different? I told her I was learning ventriloquism and she said to come back when I had perfected it. When I did she sent me straight out on a cruise ship for a summer working on a line that ran between Helsinki and Stockholm.
How do you find doing ventriloquism in the stand up world? I feel I sit in that world
quite comfortably because I can work any audience. Some still see it as an old fashioned art, and have the preconceived notion of an old bloke with a dummy. I mix using puppets with talking about ventriloquism in everyday life and twists like ‘hearing people’s thoughts’ and animatronics to give ventriloquism an edge, it’s all about making it cool.
How do audiences react to your act? There’s a lot of audience interaction in the shows I do with the puppets Sam, Albert and Baby and I also do the ‘human puppet’ where I put a moving mouth over the face of an audience member and give them a silly voice. But it is all fun and not
horrible, the audience have learnt to trust me by the time I get out among them and often they can’t wait to get involved.
Who do you admire in ventriloquism? The book I learnt from (A Gottle of Geer) was written by a man called Ray Alan, who sadly died recently. He had an aristocratic character called Lord Charles and was the best ventriloquist ever, his lips didn’t move at all. I was also influenced by ventriloquistcomedian Ronn Lucas and comedian-magician Wayne Dobson, together they represented everything I wanted to do. I like David Copperfield too. He gets terrible press but he is brilliant live.
You cite Bob Monkhouse as an influence too? Bob was so slick. He was accused of being too smarmy, particularly as a game show host, but when you saw him live that what he was best at. He was a comedian’s comedian, and is respected by comics young and old. I remember rehearsing for the 2002 Royal Variety Show with Jimmy Carr and Lee Mack and Bob came over and tapped me on the shoulder and told me this was the best spot I’d ever done.
Any others? I worked with Bruce Forsyth on the last series of the Palladium shows and did a double act with him where he was a

this year sees your first UK tour, how are you feeling about that? I have never played any of the venues on the tour so it will be interesting. I have been working on lots of new stuff and the show is constantly evolving, so from the start of the tour in September to the end of the run it will have changed. Although, of course, every night is different anyway depending on the audience.
A return to Edinburgh is the starting point for the tour, how do you find playing festival city? Edinburgh is the springboard for success. If you get it right, as happened last year with a five star review in The Scotsman, then you can sell out the
run as I happily found out. This year we have gone for a bigger venue and I’ll be doing a slightly different version of last year’s show, hence calling it Spongefest Revisited. It takes more than a year to write a completely new show but I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to come up and get the show seen by a wider audience.
What do you make of Edinburgh audiences? I think that Edinburgh audiences are pretty bloody good and I have total respect for them as they can be long-suffering what with some of the venues being really hot. I sweat a lot during my performance but its hard work for the audience too.
What are your future plans, with or without puppets? I am working on a sitcom treatment at the moment which is like The Muppets meets Seinfeld (another influence of mine), and I am trying
9
news to get the live show to be like this concept more and more. I want to conquer TV and have my own show the way I want to do it.
What do you do when the puppets are asleep and your voice is your own? I am very much a fitness person, I go to the gym every day, and I like waterskiing and scuba-diving. I like the nice things like eating out and beach holidays and do them when I can afford them. Basically, I am pretty normal. I have heard of one who, after a bad performance, was overheard shouting at his puppet in his dressing room “you weren’t funny tonight!” I also remember being at a convention and watching other ventriloquists checking in with their puppet talking to the receptionist asking for a room for two. I don’t think this will happen to me!

If you’re not aware of the scheme, do pick up a coupon and get involved. Street. This is the definitive guide that includes the full calendar of events, the tastings, the tours, the many offers and the contact details of every single business participating in the Festival. This year marks the 8th annual Horsham District Food & Drink Festival, which runs until 3rd October. It has something for everyone - with offers from the likes of town lunchtime favourite Beeches Buffet to top end restaurants such as Tristan’s, a couple of metres further down the path! The range of the deals vary - it could be a superb buy one get one free deal or perhaps just a free glass of wine at certain times. Some are truly noteworthy - such as Ginger’s Kitchen in Partridge Green, offering one festival goer a luxury selection of dishes worth £100. Do have a look and pick out some highlights for you and the family during the festival...
EVENTS
If you picked up last week’s Resident, you will have seen our preview on the Horsham Food and Drink Festival. The four week event begins on Saturday, 4th September with the Big Nibble, which you can read about in the Events box. Such was the response to last week’s feature, we’ve decided to do it again - highlight even more of the 109 events, offers and promotions being held to celebrate the best of local produce. Most are worthy of a mention, but over these two weeks we’ve picked out the deals and events we believe will be of most interest to readers. Remember though, to take advantage of these deals you will need to have a copy of the food and drink festival programme. It’s available at the council offices, libraries, leisure centres, etc, but if you’re stuck we have copies at The Resident offices, near the Black Jug Pub at 26 North
RURAL
Meals, deals, thrills &
The Food and Drink Festival kicks off with its showpiece event - the Big Nibble, held in the Carfax at 9am-4pm. Visitors can look forward to a huge farmers market, with a diverse mix of local producers offering freshly baked breads, fresh fruit and vegetables and salads, eggs, chocolates, preserves, meats, fish, pastas, cheeses and much more.
There will also be demonstrations happening at the Carfax kitchen throughout the day. Another highlight is the Horsham Beer Trail involving many of the town centre pubs. Just pick up a commemorative mini beer trail tankard and visit many of the town centre’s most diverse watering holes and sampling some of the finest beers on offer. It’s only £1!
To find out more about local produce and crafts, there are so many events to choose from. Perhaps the best is the West Grinstead Ploughing Match and Agricultural Society, which we featured in last week’s paper, on 18th Sept, as there’s so much going on. But also worth bearing in mind (if you’ve ever woken up and thought ‘if only I knew more about apples.) is the Apple Day
on 3rd October at Station House, Cowfold Road, West Grinstead, with free entry and lots of applerelated activities. Lovely venue too. Also: The Pulborough Harvest Festival is a fabulous free day on Sat, 25th Sept, there will be guided tours around Knepp on 19th Sept and there’ll be a Best of Sussex Event at Amberley Museum on 2nd-5th Sept.

The Beer Essentials is made for the four week event, and is heavily involved in the Beer Festival of course. But on 4th, 25th Sept and 2nd October the East Street store is offering free tastings of local bee along with local bread and cheese. Warning though - you may end up being as fascinated by the labels on the 150 different bottled beers and ciders in stock.
There’s also a huge variety in taste - expect to be in parts delighted, surprised, tickled, warmed, and occasionally like you’ve eaten dad’s old socks.
Also: There’s a discovery tour and tasting day at Bolney Wine Estate on 15th Sept for £10 less than normal, and Nutbourne Vineyards near Pulborough stages similar events.
Restaurant Tristan offers a predominantly British menu with some creative French influences, with dishes like terrine of pheasant and turbot with truffle risotto. During the Festival you can enjoy a free glass of house red or white during a special free course lunch. Don’t forget that programme though.
One of the best deals of the Festival comes from The Sussex Produce Company in Steyning. The award winning food shop is one of those places you go in from time to time and wonder why you don’t shop there all the time! They’re offering £25% off fresh produce and flowers during the festival. Sussex Produce Company specialises in locally sourced produce, especially fruit and vegetables, but also cheeses, cakes, preserves and flowers. The shop stocks nearly 500 organic and Fairtrade lines.
Also: Mannings Heath Golf Club serves up a couple of special offers (£14.50 – 2 courses, £17.50 – 3courses) and if you’re ever going to pay out for a meal at either the award-winning restaurants The Pass or The Camellia at South Lodge, best do it during the festival as they have deals on too.

You can enjoy modern pub dining with our hand-cut chips, home-made ice creams, all our puddings, patés, terrines, soups and honey glazed on premises.
During the Festival (Monday to Thursday) you can have lunch or dinner with 20% discount on your food with a 25% off voucher for your next visit. Also: There are a lot of great pubs offering a free glass of wine when buying lunch or dinner (terms and conditions apply) such as the Half Moon in Warninglid and The Yokebourne Restaurant in Ashington. Old school reunion!
Showroom open: Mon - Sat 10.00 am - 5.00 pm
Top quality kitchens & bathrooms at the best prices...
Facebook has its downsides the death of the birthday card, the friend who updates their status when they go the toilet, and, in our case, people criticising our Thakeham development stories on the Horsham page! But it has its plus points too, obviously. For example, it’s a great tool for those organising a school reunion! It’s been a great help to Brent Yeomans, who is helping to organise a reunion for all those who left Tanbridge House School in the years 1981 to 1986. Brent, who performs as a singer in local band 17 Black, said: “Thanks to Facebook and Friends Reunited, news of the reunion reached the USA, Canada and Australia within hours.” But there are still many people out there who are not aware of the event, to be held in the Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham, on Saturday, 25th September. Brent said: “We hope to grab the attention of any parents in the Horsham area that had children that went to Tanbridge back in the 70s and early 80s. “We would like them to contact them and pass details on, as many people moved away from the area. “The reunion will give people the opportunity to rekindle old friendships and undoubtedly start new ones. There is a real buzz about town and some people can’t wait to get reunited with old friends. “There is no need to dress up -
people can come in whatever they feel comfortable in.” On the night there will be a disco and live music, with food by Crosbie Foods. It is hoped that pupils are teachers from the era will be able to attend. A couple of students went on to become successful with huge pop bands. Robin Goodridge, who left Tanbridge in 1982, went on to become the drummer with Bush, perhaps the most successful British rock band in America during the 1990s. Jamie Hewlett showed plenty of creative flair even during his school days, contributing art work to a proposed road safety campaign that was eventually runner-up in a national television competition. He did okay career-wise too, as the co-creator of animated pop band Gorillaz. If you’re not a fan, you may at least recall his short animated sequences used by the BBC during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Robin has already stated he can’t make it - the rather lame excuse of playing to 70,000 people at an American festival!

Tarby has a tale to tell
Coming to the Capitol theatre in September: The energetic Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers, popular comedian Jimmy Tarbuck and the talented singers of Beyond the Barricade Every summer, the Capitol theatre focuses on cinema this year bringing us the best Hollywood has to offer. This hasn’t necessarily been that great this year - for every Toy Story 3 there’s been a Marmaduke, and for every Inception there’s been a The Last Airbender. It could have been worse though - the Capitol has avoided big budget stinkers such as Jonah Hex this year although we must admit we’re just a tiny bit disappointed that they aren’t showing Piranha 3-D! But now the focus goes back to the stage, and this season there’s an exciting line-up, with opera from the Metropolitan in New York, comedians such as Julian Clary, some of the world’s finest tribute acts with the music of Frank Sinatra, Abba and the Bee Gees, and much more. Throw into the mix clairvoyant Tony Stockwell, ventriloquist Paul Zerdin, Children’s entertainer Boogie Pete, golf legend Peter Alliss, Barnstormers comedy, and of course the big Christmas pantomime and you have a cracking line-up. It kicks off in September, and among the forthcoming highlights are Jimmy Tar-
buck, with his This is My Life show on Friday, 24th September at 7.30pm. Having successfully spent more than 40 years in the notoriously fickle world of show business, Tarby has hosted numerous television shows, variety shows, chat shows and game shows and his cheeky grin and boy-next-door charms have won him fans far away from his native Liverpool. However, Tarby is at his best in front of a live audience and during his date in Horsham he will be sharing anecdotes, demonstrating his quick-fire wit and thoroughly entertaining the audience in a show which promises comedy for grown-ups rather than adult comedy. During the entertaining evening, Tarby will be using photos and video footage to take audiences on a nostalgic trip down memory lane with a wealth of hugely funny stories and anecdotes ranging from being at school and in the same class as John Lennon to playing golf with Bing Crosby. Join stage funnyman Jimmy Tarbuck OBE as he delivers a fantastically funny evening of comedy for grown-ups! Tickets: £18.50, concessions £16
Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers will be on tour in the UK from September, dropping in at the Capitol on 28th September with their full concert of powerful taiko rhythms, huge drums, dramatic choreography & delicate bamboo flute & percussion, presented in a theatrical stage show. Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers has
been the driving force behind the growing taiko movement in the UK since their establishment in 1994. The group have spearheaded developing taiko as a European art form, through high profile performances, television appearances and extensive touring. The 2010 concert features the beautiful dance artist Lale Sayoko, described as elegant, graceful, mys-
terious & mesmerising. Tickets cost £18/£14 Beyond the Barricade has delighted audiences throughout the UK and mainland Europe for a decade, with its exciting concert portrayal of the greatest songs in musical theatre, all performed totally live! Recreating original West End/Broadway musical hit songs with amazing authenticity, this cast of past principal performers from Les Miserables present a two hour show which features many of the songs that have made Beyond the Barricade so successful over the past 11 years. Now established as the nation’s favourite musical theatre concert, Andy Reiss, David Fawcett, Katie Leeming and Becci Morrell, together with their own ensemble of talented musicians will be performing songs from The
‘Beyond the Barricade’ after appearing in the Manchester and London casts of Les Misérables. David played the lead role of Jean Valjean in both of these productions, and Andy played most of the male characters, including Enjolras and Valjean, and still remains the only person to take on the job of being the shows Resident Director, and perform in it at the same time. Also on stage is Katie Leeming, who joined Beyond the Barricade after playing the lead role of Eponine in the West End production of Les Miserables. Beyond the Barricades is on at the Capitol on 25th September. Tickets cost £18.50, concessions £17. If you’re more of a cinema person, there are still some good films coming up. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is on
Phantom of the Opera, We Will Rock You, The Lion King, Blood Brothers, Miss Saigon and many others, climaxing with a spectacular finale from, of course, Les Miserables! Fawcett and Reiss devised
Chan and Jaden Smith, is on from tonight (27th Aug) until next Thursday.

Wisborough Green made it all the way to the final but lost out to a Horsham side
Holbrook Rugby Club staged a successful touch rugby tournament at the weekend. While the most popular team may have been the Barns Green Girls’ team, it was The Motley Sevens that won the event, beating Wisborough Green in the final. Many players got dressed up for the day, which was as much a social occasion as a sporting event. The Holbrook bar was kept busy! It was held by Holbrook Rugby Club, who were represented by two clubs, in aid of the charity Help for Heroes. Record numbers are able to kick the habit Back in the day when all the fastest F1 cars were sponsored by cigarette firms, cowboys were known as Marlboro men and Silk Cut made adverts that didn’t make any sense, loads of people smoked. But these days, that’s all changed. Non-smokers don’t need to throw their clothes straight in the washing machine and have a bath after a night out. It’s all rather pleasant, unless you’re a plant pot in a pub garden. There are fewer smokers than ever, and record number of people used local NHS Stop Smoking Services at the start of the year. In the year to March 2010, 4,487 people successfully quit smoking in the county with support from the local NHS Stop Smoking Services. That’s an increase of more than 22% compared to the 12 months before when 3659 people went smoke-free. It is the highest number of successful quitters in Sussex
There are fewer smokers than ever in West Sussex during the period, and second highest in the whole South East Coast area. It has also exceeded the target for West Sussex this year. Andy Vincent, NHS Stop Smoking Service manager in West Sussex, said: “We are delighted that so many smokers made the decision to
come forward, see what support we could offer them to go smoke-free and then stick at it to stop smoking. “We know that stopping smoking isn’t easy, but our support really does help. Our local advisors provide free expert advice, access to medication and support tailored
to what you need. There are group sessions, one-to-one support or phone advice – lots of options to support you as much as possible during your quit attempt. “The fact that more smokers than ever before are using our support just shows how many people realise we can help them. If you are a smoker and you want to quit, we can help you too. We know there are still many smokers in West Sussex and many who want to stop – so if you are one of them come and find out how we can support you.” There are thought to be around 140,000 smokers in West Sussex.
There are more than 150 places where people can access advice and support from local NHS Stop Smoking Services in West Sussex. To find out what is close to you call our local NHS Stop Smoking Helpline on 0300 100 1823.

Weird news from Planet Earth
Why would you do it A German skydiver solved a Rubik's Cube while sitting in a rubber dinghy - as it plunged to earth from 14,000ft. Ludwig Fichte, 29, was filmed completing the classic puzzle while falling 5,900ft in 31secs. He then deployed his parachute and floated to the ground Mr Fichte, from Dresden, said: "Solving the Rubik's Cube in
freefall has been done before by three people, as far as I know. But I am the first to do it in a rubber boat.”
Surgeons have agreed to operate on a man - cruelly nicknamed Hippo Man - to remove a giant tumour from his nose. Fei Jianjun, 41, spends most of his time inside his home in Maxiang village, China, as he frightens his neighbours. Superstitious villagers believe they will fall ill if they look at
him and parents discipline their children by threatening to take them to him if they misbehave.

Zoo breeds Ligers A private zoo in Taiwan could be fined after crossing a lion and a tiger to breed 'liger' cubs. The zoo is the island's first to breed the hybrid of a lion and a tigress, but officials seized the cubs and said they may fine the owner. The three liger cubs were born at the World Snake King Education Farm but one of them died almost immediately, reports the
Daily Telegraph. "The pregnancy of the tigress caught me totally unprepared," insisted Huang Kuo-nan, the farm's owner
A US city is to pay more than £100,000 compensation to seven students who were arrested for dressing up as zombies. The seven sued Minneapolis city attorney's office after they were arrested and jailed for two days but never charged with any crime. They said they wore white face powder, fake blood and dark eye
make-up in Minneapolis to protest "mindless" consumerism. The protesters were walking in a stiff, lurching fashion.

Wimbledon dream for young tennis ace A Horsham tennis ace has experienced playing at the All England Tennis and Croquet Club at Wilmbledon. Sophie Jones, 14, reached the final of the Road to Wimbledon county championships held back in June. Despite losing the final, Sophie - a member of Comptons Tennis Club in Lower Beeding - was named a reserve for the National Finals in Wimbledon. But Sophie’s dreams came true when she got a late call to say that she had been selected to play. The only problem was that Sophie had little time to prepare or to acclimatise herself to playing on grass. A wet weekend put paid to any hopes Sophie had of gaining experience on the courts before competition. On Monday and Tuesday she Sophie played her singles matches on the Wimbledon practice grass courts in Aorangi Park, adjacent to Court One. Unfortunately, although Sophie played well, she lost the first two matches to two girls with a higher ranking. On Tuesday, Sophie claimed the first set but lost
out in a tight encounter. In the afternoon, Sophie then teamed up with Abigail Lemberger from Northumberland to play in the doubles event. The girls fought well against a strong couple losing 6-4, 6-4 against two girls from Staffordshire. After completing the league the players were split into the main draw and consolation and on Wednesday morning Sophie played the first round of the consolation. Sophie took the first set against her higher-ranked opponent Olivia Jones, but looked to be in trouble when losing the second 6-1. But from 4-3 down in the decider Sophie raised her game and took the final set 6-4. In the second round, she faced Lara McCormack from Bedfordshire, again ranked higher than herself. The two girls were delighted to find that they were going to be playing their match on one of the championships courts, number 19.
and won the match 6-4, 6-2. Her next match was in the quarter final against the number 2 seed Emma Hurst from Devon. It proved a match too far for Sophie and she lost in straight sets, although provided a solid test in the second set In between games, Sophie was able to take a tour of the All England Club
which took her to centre court, but the highlight of the week had to be the coaching clinic with Tim Henman and Dan Bloxham, head coach at Wimbledon, on the Saturday. Sophie said: “Knocking up with Tim was a great honour on the Saturday. I loved the experience of playing on the best grass courts in the world that players such as Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have played and practiced on. It’s an experience I won’t forget for a very long time.”
“I LOVED THE EXPERIENCE OF PLAYING ON THE BEST GRASS COURTS IN THE WORLD” Sophie played a superb game, powering over her serves and using the whole court to move her opponent around

You can excuse the curiosity of the residents around Birches Road in Roffey, who turned out in force to the scene of an emergency on Saturday. It’s not every day, after all, that a Surrey Air Ambulance
lands on the small area of grass next to the children’s play area. Children were able to have a close look at the helicopter while the paramedic and doctor attended to a patient nearby, who was
reported to have suffered a heart attack. He was later transferred to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill. The air ambulance, which landed at about 11am, took off after about an hour.

A step in the right direction We all like a personal approach to shopping, and in the past few months there have been some exciting new independent shops and restaurants opening in Horsham, giving the town a new zest of life. Sassy Shoe Boutique is one of them! Anna Prestwich, the owner, feels passionately that Horsham will gain from a new independent footwear boutique which will provide stylish women, young and old, a collection of European designs of which the majority have been customised specially for Sassy Shoe Boutique. “Sassy Shoe Boutique will create a really fresh stylish approach to fashion offering a beautiful affordable collection of ladies footwear” says Anna.
Sassy Shoe Boutique’s stylish Winter collection includes a select range of leather boots from Italy, Germany and Spain with prices starting from under £80 up to £200. “Beautiful Boots do not need to be expensive but they do need to feel special” she says.
We carefully select the leathers to be used, hand pick the trims and determine the rich winter colours for our boots which are then specially made for Sassy Shoe Boutique”. Great pride is taken to provide a collection of boots that you know you are going to live in, from flat knee highs for walking to work, to high heeled evening glamour for that special occasion. One of their favourite designers, Italian shoe makers Capollini, use only the finest of leathers, and have forged a reputation for elegance and aim to make a lady confident that she is wearing one of the best.
“Footwear should always be comfortable” Anna adds, “we spend everyday on our feet and there is no need for our feet to ache due to ill fitting footwear”. Every shoe, sandal, boot, pump have been hand selected and great care has been taken to ensure that each one is fantastically stylish yet comfortable. Brands include Rohde renowned as the largest traditional European comfort shoe brand, who

Do the Walk of Life On behalf of the HDC Health Walks Scheme I should like to thank all who kindly and generously sponsored me or otherwise donated to The British Heart Foundation as part of our 13 mile Riverside Walk on Saturday, 14th August. The total raised has reached £1,400. At least 80 people took part in the walk; a marvellous turnout, certainly helped by the articles in past two week’s
editions of The Resident. This Walk Scheme is ten years old this month. About 800 free, guided, walks are arranged every year throughout the Horsham District. Full details can be found on www.horsham.gov. All are most welcome to join us in “Walking and Talking Your Way to Health”. Bill Gander Volunteer HDC Health Walks Leader
I’m writing to you in the hope that somebody within the council will read my concerns about the paving around the Park Surgery and bowling centre. It’s been getting gradually worse. I suppose one positive is that elderly people who stumble on it only have to be carried a few yards to see a doctor, but
that’s hardly the point!
Dodgy pavement
Mrs V. Coleman, Horsham
Ed: It’s bad for buggies too. There’s substantial investment going into the adjacent green and it would be nice to think that the paving could be fixed for when this garden opens

When will council come clean on Bill’s?
The footnote to the letters page in The Resident (August 13th) does the residents of Horsham an injustice. Many residents, myself included, have been writing to the County Times (before The Resident came into being) and have also been in contact with councillors since the beginning of 2008 regarding the closure of the Town Hall for local events. I also wrote to the Duke of Norfolk in May 2008 to try to get details of how the Town Hall came to be in the hands of Horsham District Council. I received a reply personally signed by His Grace and also one from his archivist giving me details (which I am happy for you to see). I am now aware that Horsham District Council has the deeds. I contacted one of the councillors (whose name I will not divulge for obvious reasons) who informed me that at that time the council seemed reluctant to allow anyone to see them - I wonder why? When it was said that Bill’s Produce was interested, the Council seemed to be saying
times by residents - council tax payers who actually pay councillors’ allowances etc. This is something they seem to forget. As was pointed out in previous letters, the Town Hall could be let out at reasonable rents to charities and the organisation and become a focal point of Horsham centre once again. When will the council come clean and say whether Bill’s Produce is still interested? And by the way Bill’s Produce is, I believe, a cafe and not a restaurant - not the same at all. Beryl Smith Blunts Way, Horsham
“THE COUNCIL DON’T SEEM TO eateries in Horsham and the surrounding area - many I have to say excellent places. Unfortunately Horsham District Council seem to ba a law unto themselves - they do not listen to the views of residents and this has been pointed out many
HAVE DONE THEIR HOMEWORK!” that money realised from the letting would be around £76,000 - at a later date the amount was £52,000. They don’t seem to have done their homework. We have more than enough
Ed: We believe that the Horsham plan has only been delayed while Bill’s opens another store in Reading. Personally, I do wonder how many charities and organisations would really find it financially beneficial to use the Hall, even if the rates were lowered, to the extent that the hall could be a focal point. But the building attracts strong opinions. Personally, I think that Bill’s Produce would suit the site and give Market Square a boost, but for all those who agree with me I’ve spoken to at least as many people who think that’s absurd!
Pet Detective service I have just seen the letter from the lady whose cat has been missing for 3 years (Charlie, pictured below, went missing from Charrington Way, Broadbridge Heath) No, sorry, I don't know where he is, but it occurred to me that there may be a need for you to publish a page of missing animals in your paper which might help people find their beloved pets. My cat too went missing two years ago and posters were put up around town to no avail. You may have more responses like this be-
cause of the letter from Lyn Roberts. Please let me know if this is likely to happen because, seeing as your paper is obviously widely read and distributed, this might be a worthwhile last ditch attempt to find my precious cat. Ros Priestley writes via email
Money for Nothing
Ed: Great idea Ros - send us a snap and we’ll start up a column. Fellow readers - feel free to do likewise if you’ve lost or found a pet. I read with interest your in depth feature on Thakeham’s Sussex Mushrooms proposals (The Resident, August 20th) By my reckoning, the campaigners have got it wrong when they suggest that the housing is only going ahead to prop up the business - there’s nothing to prop up! Exactly how much of this money raised is really
going into the business? It seems to me that all that will be added are some new mushroom sheds, 12 key worker homes and a process to reduce odours which is essentially a pretty uncomplicated process of turning over the soil in a hole! How many 5 bedroom homes does it take to pay for that? Simon Holt, Horsham

Solmio Splendour “SOLMIO WAS BUILT IN THE 1970’S AND HAS ITS OWN UNIQUE DESIGN”
Guy Leonard & Company is delighted to be marketing a stunning and spacious six bedroom detached home in Threaks Lane, West Chiltington, for sale at £925,000. Solmio was built in the 1970s and has its own unique design. Internally the property offers spacious accommodation on various levels with five reception rooms, a mod-
ern fitted kitchen with separate utility room to the ground floor and six bedrooms on the first floor encompassing three en suites and a family bathroom. Externally the property is approached over its own wide private driveway with off road parking for numerous vehicles and open bay, barn style garaging and is bordered by mature trees.
The majority of the garden is to the rear and there is a sizeable patio incorporating a swimming pool with changing room and sauna. There is also an attractive fish pond. A large expanse of lawn lies to the right with mature shrub and tree borders offering privacy and seclusion. An internal viewing is highly rec-
ommended and the property is being offered for sale with a Guide Price of £925,000 for the freehold interest.

Inflation rate is questioned
A prediction that Bank of England interest rates will rise to 8% to combat an inflation rate of 10% has been questioned by an economist, which may reassure those looking to sell their homes. The forecast by chief economist at thinktank the Policy Exchange Andrew Lilico is dependent on an unlikely boom in lending by banks, senior economic advisor to the Ernst & Young ITEM Club Andrew Goodwin said. He remarked: "I would not consider it to be inevitable at all, indeed I would be very surprised if that scenario played out." Those keen to sell their homes may be encouraged by such a suggestion, as lower rates could mean cheaper mortgages and therefore more chance of people being able to afford to buy residences.
Slow recovery
The housing market will be fairly slow in the second half of this year, an estate agency has predicted. Director of research at estate agency Savills, Jacqui Daly, said those selling their home may find it a little harder as the pace of economic growth slows in the later months of the year. According to Zoopla.co.uk, 32% of properties on the market have had this figure reduced at least once since the home was put up for sale.

Property demand on the south coast has enabled local agents countrywide to sign up for the uK’s largest open house weekend. countrywide residential lettings will join more than 1,300 agents throughout the uK to help committed buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants complete their move in 2010 to avoid the government’s tax increases. the planned Vat increase comes into force on 4th January 2011, which will rise from 17 to 20%. launching the open house weekend leon Betchley, regional director at countrywide residential lettings said: “there’s a growing demand and urgency for local property – especially from those keen to avoid the Vat increase. “the biggest impact of this increase will come to those looking to fully furnish their
new home and undertake home improvements, as white goods and general diY costs will all creep up. “we’ve had great success with similar open house events as they take the formality out of viewing and enable buyers to view a huge variety of properties, back-to-back without appointments.” mr. Betchley added: “there’s still time for local homeowners and landlords to sign up and take part - by opening up your doors for just one weekend we could secure your move in 2010.” local landlords are also involved in the get moving open house event to help with the
Mortgage rates are getting more "reasonable" and this is being reflected in a "firming up" of the property market, an expert has said. Chief executive of property investment firm Assetz Stuart Law said the most recent mortgage lending figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) show that a trend predating the general election for the market to grow is continuing.
unprecedented demand the uK lettings market has seen in recent months with more than 50,000 tenants registering for rental accommodation. anyone interested viewing open house properties should contact their local countrywide office to register and gain a unique password which will enable them access to properties taking part in the event. local homeowners and landlords can submit their property to take part by contacting your local countrywide residential lettings office.

Drivers fed up with annoying passengers Nearly 4 million motorists in the UK are so frustrated with irritating passengers that they always prefer to drive alone, according to a survey by Continental Tyres. This results in a further 14 million drivers preferring to travel alone most of the time. As we get older we get less tolerant of others, with people in their fifties a third more likely to want to drive solo than those in their twenties. Researchers found the average car-owner gets annoyed at least three times by their passengers’ behaviour during the typical car journey - taking just six minutes for their blood to boil. Tempers have flared so much for one in five behind the wheel that they have asked a passenger to get out of the car. Unable to keep their hands, feet and thoughts to themselves, the ‘Backseat Driver’ was named the most annoying passenger to have in the car. They brake hard before every junction, slam the dashboard with their hands in panic, comment on every turn, and account for more than four in ten irritating passengers. Researchers studied the opin-
Top 10 Most Annoying Passengers 1. Backseat driver - This sort of passenger can’t help but brake hard before every junction and comment on every turn. 2. The Fiddler - bored to tears by long journeys, this passenger spends hours twiddling knobs and changing stations. 3. The Know It All – keeps correcting the radio/sat nav/you – they know better than anyone about any subject. 4. Sleeper - Snore through the whole journey and only wake upon reaching the final destination. 5. The Drone – unable to keep quiet, this passenger incessantly chats away. ions of 4,000 drivers and it emerged a further one in ten fall under the ‘Fiddler’ category – those bored individuals that twiddle with buttons, air con and switch between radio stations. Other types of passengers include the ‘Sleeper’ – those who
6. Road Rage – instantly gets riled by other motorists on the road, sometimes utters expletives, wave rude hand gestures. 7. Airhead - This passenger insists on spending the majority of the car journey with the windows down 8.The SatNag – their focus is on making sure you’re heading the right way, offers short-cuts and barks directions at you. 9.The Leaker – needs the toilet every 20 minutes. 10.The Crooner – belts out every ballad they recognise on the radio with complete disregard to other passengers. nod off within minutes of setting off, snore, and only wake up when they arrive at their destination. And the ‘Road Rage’ – someone who embarrasses the driver with their fiery temper, instantly getting riled by other motorists
on the road, uttering expletives, and at times waving rude hand gestures. Tim Bailey, safety expert for Continental Tyres which carried out the study, said: “It is worrying that so many motorists are irritated to such extremes by their passengers. Driving is the time we need to be most alert, so a distraction such as an annoying passenger is likely to mean a driver losing concentration. “We would suggest calmly letting the passenger know that what they are doing is distracting you, trying to calm down and most importantly, focusing on the road ahead.” The survey of drivers aged between 17 and 65 were quizzed on what types of passengers they find most irritable. And millions of Brits said those who push their feet down into the foot-well on the ‘invisible brake’ were the most annoying to have on board. One in three have been embarrassed by a passenger, but half admit they are also capable of being an annoying passenger as well, and are guilty of talking too much or suffering from road rage.

Reviving the good ‘ol days M5 smashes saloon record A BMW M5-based G-Power Hurricane RR has just set the world speed record for the fastest saloon car, at 232.5mph (372.1km/h). Built by German tuning specialist GPower, the Hurricane RR is powered by a twin supercharged V10 engine which produces 800bhp and was fitted with 19 inch Pilot Sports for the recordbreaking run, in place of the standard 20 inch fitments. The G-Power Hurricane RR not only set new performance standards for top speed. With acceleration times of just 4.35 seconds from 0 to 100km/h, 9.5 seconds up to 200 km/h and 25.8 seconds up to 300 km/h the car is also leading the class in this area too.
The 2010 Goodwood Revival – which takes place in just one month, from 17th-19th September – is set to be a very special weekend, with mouth-watering grids, scintillating on-track action, and a number of significant anniversaries to celebrate. The Revival is set to build on the success of last year’s event, when a
record-breaking 134,000 people attended over the weekend. Due to this phenomenal popularity, spectator numbers are being more tightly controlled this year with the aim of keeping the event comfortable and not too crowded. More grandstand seats have been added too, as well as an enhanced pedestrian flow with an additional
access tunnel into and out of the inner circuit paddock areas. As ever, the Revival offers visitors of all ages a chance to revel in the romance and glamour of motor racing as it used to be. It is the only sporting event in the world set entirely to a period theme, and every year spectators and competitors take a magical step back in time by
The Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration race is among the highlights of Revival
getting into the effervescent Goodwood atmosphere. The majority of visitors enter into the spirit of the event, dressing in appropriate clothing from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. The lovingly restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday (19481966), and great lengths are taken to ensure that everything on the site is exactly as it was, with no modern cars around the circuit. Bands play 1950s music, the corn stooks on the infield are made from a specially-grown crop with extralong stalks for hand cutting rather than combine harvesting, and even the food has a 1950s flavour. Highlights include the one-hour, two-driver Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration race. Expect to see Jaguar E-type lightweight; Ferrari 250 GTO, GT SWB and 330 LM/B; Aston Martin DB4GT, Zagato and Project car; and AC Cobra. Drivers taking part include Le Mans winners Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Emanuele Pirro, Martin Brundle, Tom Kristensen, Vern Schuppan, Richard Attwood, Henri Pescarolo, Andy Wallace, Hurley Haywood and Jackie Oliver; F1 aces Sir Stirling Moss, Brian Redman and Gerhard Berger plus Red Bull team manager Christian Horner; and touring car hero Anthony Reid.

THE VERY LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE BBC1, 8pm Ladies and gents, welcome to the end of an era. There will be many people tuning in tonight who can’t remember a time when Last of the Summer Wine wasn’t on the box. That’s because it’s been on since the dawn of time, well, since 1973 anyway. Three of the original pesky pensioners at the heart of the show are now gone, although Peter Sallis, at the grand old age of 89, has continued to appear in a supporting role as Norman Clegg. Hornets start with solid point at home Horsham Football Club kicked off their season last week, but will be disappointed to have taken just a point from their opening two games. On Saturday, Horsham and Aveley battled out a goalless stalemate on an overcast afternoon at Gorings Mead in a match in which both defences came out on top. Having waited 14 years to witness an opening day fixture in their home town, the Hornets supporters were left disappointed by the final outcome with neither goalkeeper seriously stretched throughout the 90 minutes, despite the best efforts of skipper Ben Andrews who twice went close to claiming the all-important goal in the closing stages. John Maggs handed four players their competitive debuts; full-back Steve Elliott, the former Lewes midfield duo of Jay Lovett and Paul Kennett and exDartford striker Allan Tait in a much changed side to that which ended the last home campaign against the same opponents. With last season's top scorer, Pat Harding, missing through injury there was also much interest in the return to the first
team for Horsham youth product Dean Wright after a couple of seasons at County League Three Bridges. Horsham then went down 2-0 at Sutton United on Tuesday night. The Hornets struggled to impose themselves during the first half and survived a strong penalty claim before falling behind to Craig Dundas' 26th minute header. Mark Zawadski kept Horsham in the game with a terrific save, just before the break, and the visitors put in an improved showing in the second half where Allan Tait and sub Pat Harding both went close to claiming an equaliser, only for Richard Jolly to

Jay Lovett made his debut for the Hornets and (left) Howie the Hornet presents a supporter with a new Bobble hat! add a second for the Us with 20 minutes remaining. Elsewhere, Bury Town overcame a 2-0 half-time deficit to record an excellent 3-2 win at Tonbridge Angels, Hendon bounced back from Saturday's loss at Tooting to defeat Concord Rangers 4-1 while Hastings made it 2 wins out of 2 with a 4-
2 success at Maidstone. Canvey Island and Lowestoft were 2-0 winners over Harrow Borough and AFC Hornchurch respectively. Horsham are at home against Kingstonian on Saturday at Gorings Mead, Horsham, for their first league game of the season. www.hornetsreview.co.uk
Honour for Hannan at Summer Masters Joe Hannan, 13, scooped the Junior Academy Summer Masters prize at Cottesmore on Sunday 22nd August. Polina Zotova won the girls section; Conrad Lewis the under 11s; Egor Zotov the under 9s and the under 7s champ was Ben Powell. Calum Callan, PGA Professional at Cottesmore, said: “There are over 50 youngsters in the Academy and growing and many go on to the full junior membership. “It is so worthwhile learning from an early age – even our current men’s club champion is only 16 – Joe Way! We actively encourage girls to play as women’s golf is the fastest growing market in golf. “One of our juniors, 11–year old Alex Rogers recently got
his hole-in-one. As etiquette demands he shared his success and bought his playing partners a Mars bar each!” The Summer Masters is part of Cottesmore's Junior Academy run by Callan. Coaching is made available to all level of golfers of all ages from 5-15years old. Throughout the year the young players have a mix of group and individual coaching plus on-course practice. Fun tournaments and pair’s events with adults are integrated into the coaching schedule. Rules and etiquette play a big part of the learning process. Junior Days are held on the golf course every Wednesday throughout all school holidays.
Awesome A’s win after trailing 10-2
PMW Communications Mustang League Athletics 15 v Mets 5 The combination of great hitting and solid pitching powered the Athletics to their eighth win of the season as they beat the Mets 15-5. Callum Hunt lead the way with four runs batted in, while Sam Easter and Tom Crabb each drove in three runs. Easter blasted a basesloaded triple and Crabb doubled with the bases loaded to put the game out of reach. Pitcher Tom Underwood was unhittable in two innings' work, striking out five and only allowing one Met to reach base.
Mets 10 v Yankees 0 The Mets played their 6th win of the season with only 4 Mets players available to play. This meant that the Mets had to borrow 3 players from another Mustang team. The four Mets players Ethan, Zac, Tom and Sam proved their metal each scoring runs with Sam Bourne scoring 3 in 4 innings. The ace pitching from both Sam and Zac secured their win with a haul of 7 strike outs. Unfortunately not a win for the Yankees, but still what a performance. There were great catches, awesome pitching and a wonderful display at home plate with an amazing tag by the Catchers Ben Scammel and Hayden. Slinfold Country Club Bronco League
Yankees 7 v Mets 17 Yankee Callum Budd struck out three of the toughest hitters in the league. Considering he has had health difficulties his whole life this feat should never be forgotten. His team surrounded him after the inning with praise and appreciation. A great team effort with nearly every player scoring a run or driving one in. Mets were on top form with Joe Aylett, Megan Field and Tom Bourne each bringing home three runs each and Bryn Coughlan drove in a three run hit. Tom Bourne as pitcher also managed to strike out 7 Yankees in 3 innings. Red Sox 10 v Athletics 11 The A's managed to get the 9 runs they needed in the last innings to secure this hard fought victory against an inform Red Sox team, with the A's winning by 11 runs to 10. Sam Hamilton had a great game with 2 runs and 3 R.B.I's The match Redsox vs Athletics ended with the score of 11-10 but this did not really show how the game went. For the first three of the four innings the Redsox held the lead, entering the fourth, and open, innings at 10-2. The Athletics made a great comeback in this innings holding the Redsox to 0 runs and making 9 for themselves, completely turning the game around. The game was an exciting match with good rivalry between the teams but also great sporting spirit. Redsox would also like to thank Sam Boylett (Mets) who stepped in to make a full team.

Marco enjoys more golf glory
Teenage golf talent Marco Penge continues to make progress on the nation’s junior competition scene. Back in May, Forest pupil Marco, who plays off a handicap of 3.3, qualified for the final for Nick Faldo Series Final at Loche Erne in September, becoming the youngest qualifier in its history. Last month, 12-year-old Marco won the Dyke Captains Day at the Dyke Golf Club, shooting two under par in a field of 140. He also played in the Reid Trophy (for England Golf Union Under 14s) at Hesketh Golf Club, Southport. This was the first time Marco played in this elite tournament. He finished 25th in a field of 110, but can compete in the event for another two years. And just last week, Marco won the Moortown Masters, a tournament for under 14s across UK, held in association with the Great Britain Golf Society. Played at Moortown Golf Club, Leeds, Marco (pictured above with the trophy) shot a two over par 73 for the win. motor sport

captain’s bunker boost for heroes What with all that’s happening up at horsham Golf and fitness club, you could forgive them if such matters as charity fundraisers slipped their mind. But that’s not the case at the club, near Hop Oast, where work on a new 18-hole golf course hasn’t interrupted a great season of golf. Last time we visited the club, members were enjoying a MidSummer madness event, trying to negotiate a much-altered course! And on Saturday, September 14th, Captain’s Day was held, raising £640 for Help for Heroes The team event winners were Amber Cockram, Gary Cockram, Mark Benney and Terry Robinson with 144 points.
25+ Handicaps winner was Jack Holmwood (49pts) and nearest the pin was John Taylor. Secretary Chris Purton said: “Congratulations to all who played in Captain’s Day on Saturday. “Between us, £640 was raised taking the grand total to £1,400 for Help for Heroes. “This is a fantastic achievement when you think the main source of income is all the 50p fines from the Captain’s Bunker on the 5th hole!” “I know Ron (Waddell) is extremely proud to be Club Captain and is overwhelmed by the support on the day and over the year.” Horsham Golf & Fitness Club is currently building a new course
Runners-up were Heather Culshaw, Richard Culshaw, Rob Culshaw and Geoff Dale on 136 points, and third were Richard Budd, Josh Budd, Aaron Tingley and Liz Edmonds (134 points) In the individual event, 0-14 Handicaps winner was Alec Cresswell (49pts), and nearest the pin winner was Ian Purton. In the 15-24 Handicaps, the winner was Richard Culshaw with 52pts, with Joan Davies winning nearest the pin.
adjacent to the current nine hole course. The land was bought for a price in the region of £2million and the drawing up of the plans and submitting an application cost an extra £350,000. As well as creating a new course, there are plans to modernise the clubhouse and changing rooms and to build a new function suite at the site of a derelict barn which is located to the right of the current fifth hole.
“the main source of income is the 50p fine from the captain’s bunker!”
Legends driver John Mickel, enjoyed a good weekend’s racing at Pembrey. John took a 2nd place podium for the day’s racing on Saturday and a joint 1st place podium with Stephen Treherne for Sunday’s racing on September 15th. "This is where I hoped to be earlier in the year but when we kept taking the cars back in pieces we were rebuilding them instead of tweaking them" said John. “This is a great result for the team and sponsors and we look forward to more success.”

Sussex Barn’s hopes dashed
Horsham conquer Park to retain shield The annual Horsham Town Challenge took place on Sunday with four mixed rinks playing on each of the Horsham greens. Despite the fine rain and drizzle, the match was played in great spirit and enjoyed by all. Horsham won at home by 20 shots, with a top rink of Barry Baillie, Christine Thomas, Malcolm Bridgman and skip Frank Vernon (+13). Horsham Park’s top rink away was Pauline Dee, Di Langridge, Frank Heath and skip Harry Smith (+6). In the park, Horsham Park won by 5 shots, with their top rink of Gwen Denman, Paul English, Ian Holmes and skip Peter Topper (+10). Horsham’s top rink away was Lesley Grogan, Doug Locke, Arch Redwood and skip George Cooper (+8). So overall, Horsham BC regained the Town Challenge Shield by 15 shots. Horsham Chairman Mike Power complimented both clubs on their approach to the competition and remarked on the cordiality between both sets of bowlers. In return, Harry Smith, Hor-
sham Park’s Captain, commented on the enjoyable afternoon and was looking to wrest the Shield back next year. A raffle raised over £130 and has been split between the two clubs’ charities, Chase and Eve. On Wednesday, 18th August, Horsham lost out 56-73 to Newdigate. Losing three rinks out of four, Horsham’s Robbie Calder, usually a lead, kept up his unbeaten record as skip with a 2shot win, accompanied by Val Redwood and David Thomas. And on Saturday, there was a narrow defeat for Horsham at home against Hurstpierpoint. A dull, overcast, humid afternoon did not have an adverse effect on the match, even though it started in a fine drizzle. By tea, the sides were evenly matched, but the away team gradually edged ahead and finally won by 4 shots, 7882. Captain for the day and skip Mike Power was pleased with his return to form, leading his triple (Fran Baillie and Alan Fisher) to victory by 14 shots. Colin Watson skipped his team to an honourable draw.
In the latest rounds of fixtures, sadly two 9-0 walkovers were awarded, as both N.A.D.S & the Star failed to turn up for their matches, leaving only 7 games that were actually played. All three games were played in the A Division, leaders Plough Hounds dented Sussex Barn's hopes of a top two finish, with a great 7-2 victory, while second placed BBHVC failed to take advantage of the Barn's demise, when they could only muster up a 5-4 win over King Arms B. But the Railway A's 9-0 tanning of the Tanners Arms puts them right back in with a chance of making the knockout stages. Steyning CC still dominate the B Division, but were made to work hard for their tenth successive win, when the Rising Sun just failed to win, finally going down narrowly 5-4. The Sun's Ron Clarke was on target with a 180. The Anchor surprised second placed Red Lyon by beating them 5-4, but still remain well adrift of the top three. The Bear Inn were awarded one of the 9-0 walkovers. Kings Arms’ Dave Ansell was in great form for the C Division pace setters, hitting a maximum, and then poking out with a 105 finish, to help the Arms derail the Railway Colts 7-2. Storrington Club beat the Shelley Arms in a closely fought contest 5-4, and Storrington were also awarded a 9-0 walkover against the Star, from a game postponed from week 9, meaning these two results propels them up into the top three, and a possible chance of qualifing for the play-offs. Sharks bite back to win
Sussex Sharks ended a wonderful Horsham Festival of Cricket by ending Somerset's unbeaten run in dramatic style in a rain-shortened CB40 tie. The Festival saw First Class Cricket coming to Horsham’s Cricketfield Road ground. And after brushing aside Derbyshire in the County Championship match, the 40 over team - The Sharks - overcame Somerset, with a host of household names playing for the visitors. Somerset made a strong start as Marcus Trescothick (67) and Craig Kieswetter (45) added 105 for the first wicket. Peter Trego hit 50, and though wickets fell regularly, Somerset posted a challenging 216-7 off 20 overs. Ed Joyce (35) and Michael Yardy (66 no) scored equally quickly, and when rain returned, Sussex won by 17 runs on the DuckworthLewis method. Luke Wright (16) holed out early but Joyce and Murray Goodwin (13) kept up the pressure. However, when Murali Kartik (2-22) removed them both in his first over Sussex's position suddenly looked perilous. Chris Nash, a Horsham regular who scored 156 runs against Derbyshire, was disappointed to be out for just 8 runs, as Somerset looked to be on top. With the rain steadily worsening, Sussex skipper Yardy reversed his side's fortunes, striking his runs off just 30 balls. Together with Joe Gatting (25 no), he added 91 in seven overs to take the holders back ahead of the D/L score before the umpires decided the rain was too heavy for further play.

Tom Norris bats for Trinity and (right) Jack Gold takes another wicket
(All pictures by Clare Turnbull for The Resident)
Gold Fingers David Gold was the hero for Horsham Trinity in a thrilling Horsham Junior Festival of Cricket Under-16 Shield final at Eastergate on Sunday. Needing just a single boundary for the final wicket, Scaynes Hill were denied by Gold, and lost by just 4 runs. Disrupted by the wet weather it was difficult for both teams to get into any kind of batting or bowling rhythm, but this did not stop them producing a fine competitive encounter. Scaynes Hill’s Joe Gallon (4-30) and Josh Woodfield (5-21) bowled superbly to restrict Horsham Trinity to 120 all out, for whom Max Lee (20) and Joe Smallwood (18) hit quick fire runs. After a fine lunch by generous hosts, Eastergate CC, Trinity took to the field knowing they would have to field and bowl flawlessly to defend such a total. Showing the
commitment and enthusiasm of a team who have all played together since U12, they heaped on the pressure and spearheaded by Marcus Collier, took 3 quick wickets for 17 runs to leave Scaynes Hill reeling. Matt Jackson (34) led a spirited fight back before George Thornton expertly took a skying catch to remove him. Scaynes Hill moved ever closer to the target needing only 13 runs with 4 wickets in hand, but Trinity dug deep and wickets from skipper Tom Norris and Max Lee
proved vital in setting up a nail biting climax. With only a single boundary required, Jack Gold sent the leg stump flying to seal a memorable victory. Trinity coach Dave Wilde summed up the day: “All the parents and coaches of both sides, couldn’t be prouder of the boys for showing such fantastic gutsy team performances.” Earlier in the week Matt Hempstead was part of the Trinity team Trinity had defeated local rivals Pulborough by amassing 210-8 (Joe Wilde 93 runs) and bowling them out for 87. Further victories followed against Steyning (95 all out) inspired by Jack Gold’s 5 wickets for 11 runs and then against West Chiltington (71 all out) before a Friday encounter brought Trinity 196-5 (Ben Chappels 55, Jack Gold 55 and Joe Smallwood 53) and a winHorsham Trinity: Back: Matt Hempstead, Josh Tustin, ning draw against SouthJack Gold, Max Lee, George Thornton, Joe Wilde, Billy water (145-9). The Horsham Festival of Cricket was one to cherish for fans and Sussex cricketers. It wasn’t exactly Strawberries and Cream weather, but there was some Champagne cricket from Sussex, particularly with the bat. Sussex, chasing a quick return to Division One after relegation last year, destroyed lowly Derbyshire. They didn’t even need the Saturday as they won by an innings-and-109-runs. Adding to his three first-innings wickets, Monty Panesar took 4-67 as Derbyshire were dismissed for 225 on a drizzly Friday. Corey Collymore, who impressed in the first innings, took 4-50, with only captain Greg Smith (49) causing the home side’s bowlers any problems before Monty Panesar claimed the wicket. Resuming on 27-
2, the visitors lost Wayne Madsen first for 23 to a
sharp catch at short leg by Ben Brown off Collymore. Luke Wright took a wicket in his first ball of the day, as Wes Durston was trapped lbw for 33. Dan Redfern was caught at slip for 19 on the stroke of the interval and Robin Peterson fell to Collymore soon after the break. Panesar and Arafat dealt with the tail to leave Sussex 20 points ahead of Glamorgan at the top of the division and 37 points clear of third placed team Glouces-
tershire. The real treat for the fans was on the Thursday, when Sussex cruised into an unassailable lead thanks to some superb strokes from no less than four batsmen. Local lad Chris Nash was among the star performers, scoring 156 from 174 balls, and notching up 294 for the first wicket, with Ed Joyce scoring 164. On what was clearly a great batting surface, Horsham’s cricket fans were treated to a wonderful demonstration of batting. Ben Brown, coming in for the dismissed Nash, hit 112 before Murray Goodwin reached his century too, to the appreciation of the crowd. After two days, Derbyshire might as well have packed up and gone home. Sussex declared at 576-4, a lead of 334. They never looked like forcing Sussex to bat again, having scored just 242 in the first innings.
