One of the country’s most controversial circus acts returns to the area in a fortnight’s time. Chances are you’ll have already decided where you stand on the Great British Circus by the photograph above and on page three. You may well be of the opinion that exploiting animals such as tigers, lions and elephants in the name of entertainment is wrong. You may not feel quite so strongly about it as the animal rights activists who push for such circuses to be banned, and you might think that large gatherings of protestors at the entrance to the circus drives people away but for the wrong reasons - families can feel intimidated by their presence. Or you’ll be of the opinion that, ultimately, there’s not much wrong with it, and that what the circus offers is little different to what you would see at the zoo. The circus rolls into the West Sussex Showground in Dial Post on 8th June. Those involved

won’t care too much for the protestors and the placards that will undoubtedly greet them, but they’ll know that it certainly hits business. The Great British Circus is one of the very few that still uses animals for its acts, which is why it always makes headlines at every stop - though not always the headlines it would like. Keen to make up our own minds when the circus last visited Dial Post last year, The Resident popped along to the show. While the performers were clearly skilled and experienced, many in the half-filled arena were clearly a little uncomfortable, as though by just being there they were advocating the use of animals at the circus. The children though, who don’t need to concern themselves with moral dilemmas, did enjoy the show. The circus stars Sophie Coles as Ringmistress. Sophie was born into the circus and has been working in the Big Top all her life.

Changes on the menu at pubs The last few years have been difficult for many pub landlords. At one point last year, six pubs were closing every day - here in Horsham we lost the Horse & Groom and then The Boars Head, although admittedly for very different reasons. But some pubs are looking towards a brighter future with new people in charge. Earlier this month, Amanda McLoughlin and Dave Ford took over the running of the Queens Head in Queens Street, Horsham. Within two weeks they have stripped down the pub, inserted two new pool tables and three more big screen televisions, and are looking forward to a bumper World Cup summer. Dave said: “We stripped the place down and as you can see it’s looking really nice in here. We’ve put the tables in and we have three brand new screens, so that’s four in total. “The scaffolding will be up by the end of the week as we’re having new windows out front and a new sign too. We’ve also created a nice beer garden out the back.” Starting from this Saturday, the pub will be serving food once again, offering Sunday roast and an all day breakfast deal for just £6 with a

which other than pub traffic is so seldom used that the resident rabbits, pheasants and birds don’t seem to know what to do when a car comes along, but it was once renowned for its wonderful food. Marlene has wisely opted not to stray away from the traditional English pub blueprint, but has made the George & Dragon available for weddings, while summer barbecues begin this week. Marlene, who ran the Forresters Arms in Kirdford for seven years, said: “We have had visitors from places such as America and Canada, and they love it in here. It is what they want to see. “They think it’s wonderful that you have to duck down or you’ll hit your head going down into the restaurant area!” But Chris, who previously ran the kitchen at the Half Moon Inn in Kirdford, has given the kitchen a shake-up. He said: “We have improved the quality of the meat here. We source all of our produce locally, using butchers in Billingshurst and Handcross, and even

bring in pork from Knepp Castle. “I do not use topside, I use rib, and it’s all cooked on the day. People know when they are eating a pre-heated roast. “It’s all about quality for me. If you give quality the customers will keep coming back and it will pay in the long run. Buy cheap, buy twice, that’s what I say!” Another country pub that has recently taken on new landlords is The Greets Inn in Warnham. New proprietor Duncan Entwhistle is gradually re-building the reputation of the Greets and turning it back into a traditional English pub after its brief foray into the world of Italian dining! Duncan said: “We’ve been here several months ago, and we’ve worked hard on the building and we’re currently doing work to the garden to make it more appealing for families. “We want to be one of the pubs that people first consider when they are heading out for a meal. It just takes a while to build up to that point again!”

Great British Circus due to arrive soon Continued from Page 1... She first appeared in the circus ring at the age o f eleven a n d p e r formed h e r f i r s t aerial act at the age of just

thirteen before going on to perform sword and dagger balancing and rolling globes. Martin Lacey is the lion and tiger trainer. “A day without animals is a day without sunshine,” says Martin, who breeds his own lions, tigers, camels, zebra and reindeer. A spokesman for the circus said that the care they provide is better than in a zoo, that the animals live far longer than they do in the wild, and that the tigers have been born and bred in the circus. They said: “All of our animals are bred in the circus. Our lions and tiger are tenth generation, and live until they are about 20. To see even an 11-year-old tiger in the wild is rare. “That’s down to their diet, the veterinary care

we provide and the regular exercise we give them. “The circus care is actually better than a zoo. They have large enclosures at zoos but our animals live longer because we exercise them three times a day, during rehearsals and then show times.” “Some people don’t like what we do; some people don’t like horse racing, but we do believe that the people who do like it should have the freedom to visit the circus and don’t need their minds made up for them by protesters.” For more details (and if you wish a half price voucher offer) see the website at www.greatbritishcircus.co.uk

Have a Ball On Saturday 5th June Horsham Junior Baseball Club (HJBC) will launch their 2010 season with a fun packed day for all the family to enjoy. HJBC will be launching their 5th year in style with an exciting day of activities and games at their home ground, The Ben Vodden Field, Ingfield Manor in Billingshurst The day will commence at 9.30am with an opening ceremony in true American style with the introduction of the children in the various leagues dressed in full uniform. Following this the games will begin and continue with various teams playing throughout the day. The club is even holding a Home Run Derby and an adult softball game for those that wish to participate in the afternoon.

There’s plenty of fun to be had at the Time Out club at local leisure centres during half term week. Activities include a food day on Monday, swimming and trampolining on Tuesday and a special World Cup Day on 4th June, when you can make your own team flag and medal. Call 01403 215263 for details.

Let’s get messy! So what is this Kidz Stuff all about? It’s an event for children, being held in Horsham Park on June 4th - 6th. It used to be held at Leonardslee Gardens, and made headlines around the world last year as it included the biggest custard pie fight ever.

Are there any record attempts this year? Five actually! Visitors on Friday can compete in the Largest Bun Fight, while Saturday sees the Largest Wet Sponge Fight and on Sunday the Largest Gunge Fight. Every day they event is hoping to break the record for the number of people dressed as Story Book Characters, and the fifth is the world’s largest three legged race on the Saturday.

Bun fight? Sounds a bit tame... That’s because Friday is Access for All day. It’s for Children with Special Needs and their friends and families.

Numbers admitted will be limited to ensure that the children have the time and space to fully enjoy all that Kidz Stuff has to offer.

How much is it? Tickets are between £7-£10, with children under 2 free. The best ticket prices can be obtained by getting your tickets in advance from The Capitol before the end of May.

That’s quite expensive... As a ticket price it is, but everything else is free once you are inside, so it’s pretty good as an all round deal. The only extra fees are to enter the world record weekend fights (£3), and food/drink. So what do I get for my tenner then? There are three exciting arena acts each day including Jez Avery’s Motorcycle Stunt Show, which we saw at the South of

England Show a couple of years back and it was superb. Other highlights include a Sheepdog display and a Birds of Prey Act!

Alright, I’m warming to it. What else? The Observatory Science Centre a t Her-

stmonceux will be delivering 6 shows each day on the subjects of Forces and Sound. There’s also petting animals, bridge building with Ringway Ltd, a kitchen academy, art activities, clay pigeon shooting with laser guns, soccer coaching with brighton & Hove Albion, giant inflatables, trampolines, climbing walls...

Any celebs? Well if you must know, TV celebrity Dave Benson Phillips will be conducting the daily world record fight attempt with messy stuff. Dame Vera Lynn will be popping along for a chat on the Friday and Anna Williamson (Toonattik and Horsham’s 2010 panto star) will be another visitor.

What should I not miss? If you are going to go, I’m afraid you have to pay out for the sponge/gunge fight. Sign up early too - places are limited for the fights and there was easily 500 who

could have joined in the custard pie fight last year...

Anything else? Yes, get your hands on the entry form for the Horsham window competition. Lots of local firms are taking part in it and you can win a cash prize by spotting the Kidz Stuff items at various shops ad businesses. You should be able to pick up froms at The Capitol or Country Produce in The Carfax. We know that sometimes entries to such competitions are small in number - much like a lot of comps in local newspapers so even by entering you could have a really good chance of winning. And it’s quite fun for kids too.

Kids, kids, kids? What about us grown ups? Oh, yeah, you lot. You’ll probably hate it. You just have to watch 300 kids having an amazing gunge fight and wallow in the misery of getting old. Sorry. www.kidzstuff.org.uk

Jolyon’s Italian Job

news

Southwater Formula Two racer Jolyon Palmer won both races at the famous Monza circuit in Italy, and now leads the championship after the ‘best weekend of his career’. He gives his thoughts on a memorable few days.. Where does this weekend rank in your career so far? “It is definitely the best weekend of my career so far. It is always nice to get another win under your belt and to do in the way I did in race one was special. “The safety car came out when I already had the race in the bag, so I had it all to do again. I was reasonably confi-

dent of my pace and having Dean Stoneman benefiting from my tow was a real setback, but I was confident that even if he had got past me on the restart that I could have got him back as I had some boosts in reserve. “I managed to keep the lead and take a great win and then I was really confident with my pace for race two. I was steady for the first few laps but I slowly crept away from Will Bratt - I had five boosts remaining for the final five laps, so it was mine to lose.” You seemed to produce two very different qualifying laps during the two sessions, but both secured pole position “In first qualifying it was just good timing to have had Benjamin Bailly ahead of me - I used my head and was able to get a good tow in the latter part of the lap. It worked well but it wasn't that special.

Jolyon in action at Monza, and below left, Jonathan Palmer presents the winner’s trophy to his son “The lap I produced in qualifying two was one of the best I have ever pulled out. I knew as the lap was progressing that it was a good one - it was all or nothing and I was pushing like mad. “I saw that it was under 1:40 seconds and I thought surely noone is going to beat that, so I came in and parked up the car early.

You seemed to adapt to Monza really well considering it was your first visit to the venue? “I had a good feeling before the event to be honest. I had not been there before and there is no other track like it - it is pretty incredible. “It is a very high speed circuit and it is one of the most fun for a driver. It just seemed to suit my

style - I seemed to be quickest at the Lesmos and I found it quite easy to be consistent.”

You're now leading the championship; does this bring any added pressures? “I am just focussed on winning races and getting the best results possible. It's nice to think that I am doing well and that I have a little cushion in the standings but it is still early in the season and anything can happen. “Of course you start to think about the possibility of winning the championship after such a great weekend but it is a long season and I am just treating every race as it comes. Parking review

After a six-year price freeze West Sussex County Council has reviewed the price of onstreet parking. Charges have stayed the same since 2004 but will now be revised in July in line with inflation and rising running and maintenance costs. The move will mean parking will continue to be self-financing and will not have to be funded through council tax. The changes will also help to strike the right balance between on-street and off-street parking. Derek Whittington, West Sussex Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, said: “On-street parking is designed for short stays. However if the cost is cheaper than nearby car parks motorists will often choose to park on-street rather than using the car parks. This can lead to congestion. “To make sure there is a sensible balance, the on-street charges need to be the same or more than the cost of nearby car parks.” The changes come into effect in July and relate to all on-street parking, including pay and display, vouchers and resident permits.

Fly your flags with pride...without fear!

You read these stories (mainly in the Daily Mail!) about the courts and police letting criminals off the hook as our jails are overflowing, but you never expect it to happen right here in Horsham. But sure enough, Sussex Police have revealed that no action will be taken against those unsavoury sorts who: a)Will wear an England shirt during the forthcoming World Cup b)Fly a St George flag from their bedroom window c)Say England players (and ‘shinies’) are worth two regular stickers when swapping Panini World Cup stickers! Of course, it seems a bit daft that Sussex Police would feel the need to point out the rather obvious (we made C up, while we’re on the subject of pointing out the obvious) but due to some ridiculous rumours on social networking sites, it seemed people actually believed you couldn’t visibly support your own nation during the tournament, which starts on June 11th. Chief Superintendent Paul Morrison

said: "We have absolutely no problem with England or indeed supporters of any other country demonstrating their allegiance to their team, whether it be flags, shirts or any other legal and decent means. “All we ask is that drivers should be careful not to distract themselves or other road users and anyone celebrating or commiserating should do so sensibly and within the law. "We won't tolerate offensive or racist imagery or slogans and will deal with offenders. Similarly, we will not put up with anyone whose exuberance degenerates into drunken or anti-social behaviour. "The World Cup is a time for celebration and our main aim is to make this a

safe and trouble free tournament for the thousands of fans across Sussex. “We have asked licensees to work with us to keep people safe by, for example, providing drinks only in plastic or polycarbonate glasses and bringing to our attention any trouble makers. "Sussex is a diverse county and we would not stop any fan from wearing their country's colours or waving their nation's flag in pubs if they so wish to do so. We want all fans to enjoy the festivities." The police will, however, be conducting an extensive campaign to target drink drivers. There’s also expected to be extra police vigilance to combat domestic abuse, after research revealed that there was a 25% increase in cases during the last World Cup in 2006.

Returning soldier hosts Heroes event You’ve got to feel a bit for Dan Spencer... As if serving our country in Afghanistan wasn’t enough, Dan along with three comrades - decided to raise money for Help for Heroes by riding 5,700 kilometres on an exercise bike in between duties. The idea was that all four would be at the Dog and Bacon pub in Horsham on Saturday night to complete the final few kilometres during a fun day. But in the past few days his three fellow servicemen - Tony Lane, Jay Marrs and Jock Hawkins - have all been called up for further duties, so poor old Dan needs a big effort to finish the mission on his own. He has also discovered that many of his close friends have already committed to play in the Bradley Rooke Memorial Tournament on the same day (see events page). So if you are playing in that, do head down to the pub as soon as you’re knocked out! It’ll be worth it, as Dan’s gone to no small amount of trouble to organise a raffle, auction and entertainment for the night. Dan said: “We started cycling 48kms a day on the 1st February and then were deployed to Afghanistan on a two month tour where we had to keep up the routine despite working each day, as you would expect to. “The total distance we are covering is a little over 5700kms, which is the distance from our base in Afghanistan to the Dog and Bacon Pub in Horsham. “I've been involved with events for Help for Heroes for the last three years. This is obviously a charity close to my heart, as is the 'Afghan He-

roes' charity. “The event starts at midday with me finishing the last leg of the cycle in the pub on an exercise bike but there will also be games for the kids, a car wash, ice cream van, BBQ and many more family orientated bits throughout the day. “In the evening we have charity head shaving, an auction and raffle and a comedy night with four local comedy acts.” The Newsagent Provocateur John O'Sullivan will be hosting the comedy. Items being auctioned include a signed picture supplied by McLaren F1 of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton on the grid at the Chinese Grand Prix, a flight for up to three people in Mr Vallance of Charlwood Air Museum's private aircraft, and a day’s tree surgery. Raffle items include meal vouchers from Cote and Strada of east Street, Horsham, Top Gear merchandise, a £125 voucher Specsavers and loads more. The fun starts at midday, with a BBQ in the mid-afternoon and the charity head shave, auction and raffle will take place later in t h e evening.

Toonattik star is panto fanatic Well that doesn’t look very boyish. Oh well, eh lads, it’ll have to do! Anna Williamson, star of Saturday morning children’s TV show Toonattik, popped in to Horsham last week to try out her costume for the Capitol Theatre’s Christmas panto. Anna will be playing the title role in Aladdin, which will again be written by the theatre’s general manager Michael Gattrell, who was responsible for the hugely successful production of Cinderella last time around. Michael has started preparing the script, and he and Anna popped around to The Resident’s cosy offices for a quick chat about Aladdin. We just about managed to get a word in edgeways as Anna, every bit as lively and infectious off screen as on it, didn’t need any prompting to express her love of panto! She said: “I don’t think you can do it if you don’t love it. I’m really quite passionate about panto. “It really is a difficult skill - it’s an art form really. People have tended to scoff at panto but I think that trend is changing. “I have always thought it was creditable. I first experienced it as a child and got the bug to be on the stage, and I still thank my lucky stars I’m doing it. “It’s one of our long standing traditions in this country and every year it’s nice to see new audiences coming in and enjoying it. I just love it more and more every year - I loved the first one I did and didn’t think I could top that but they always get better.” As you would expect after last year’s record breaking run, the script is likely to bear some resemblance to Cinderella in that it will

actively involve the audience in proceedings. But we may have to allow Anna a couple of missed lines - this is after all her fifth Aladdin and confusion can set in! “There have been times when I have slipped into a previous year’s script!” says Anna. “You suddenly think, ‘that’s the wrong c u e ’ a n d have to g e t back o n

track!” They’ll be some old favourites returning for the panto as well as some surprises (let’s see how they conjure up a flying carpet!) so join Aladdin, Wishee Washee, Widow Twankey and the beautiful Princess on the magic carpet ride of a lifetime. Aladdin will be a glittering pantomime - the perfect traditional pantomime for all the family. Tickets cost £16, concessions £14.25 (family and group discounts avaliable via the box office 01403 750220)

The youngsters at the Horsham Hospital fete didn’t think a great deal of John Bird’s political satire, but at least they had a giant pink slide to play on! The TV and renowned satirist was the star of the summer fete on Saturday. He entertained the crowd with quips about the new Coalition Government and also found warm words of praise for the many volunteers who raise money for the hospital and help support services there. During the afternoon Mr

Bird also unveiled a display of historic photographs which have been reframed and are now on permanent show in the tea bar area along with a plaque marking the 50th anniversary of The League of Friends. They cover key points in the history of the hospital including the Cottage Hospital built in 1892, the first record book, building of the second hospital in 1923 and the centenary in 1992. The pictures, many of which are more than 80 years old, have been re-framed by The League of Friends. Continued on Page 15...

From left to right, Opera night at the festival, poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, and River Deep and Downland High on 13th June

Village fest is rebjorn Last year’s Steyning Festival proved to be a great success for the 2,000 people who experienced its fantastic and inspired mix of theatre, film, dance, literary talks, poetry, music, art and festival walks. This year’s festival, the fourth, will be even better. The festival is aimed at all ages and this year’s theme is ‘Uniting Generations’. As well as uniting discerning audiences from the whole of Sussex, this festival attracts professional artists and amateurs alike, including big names like the poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy performing The Princess Blankets. Alongside this literary event will be the crime writer’s panel evening ‘A Twist in the Tale’ (1st June) featuring Peter James talking about his latest

brilliant novel ‘Dead Like You’, plus best selling authors Sophie Hannah talking about her psychological thriller ‘A Room Swept White’ and RJ Ellory talking about his latest success ‘The Anniversary Man’. If theatre is more your interest, then you will be delighted by ‘What Would Helen Mirren Do?’ (1st-2nd June), a onewoman comedy show by Josie Melia, starring Anita Parry, about a woman needing a role model. One of the many musical highlights is ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Opera’ (13th June), an evening of opera performed by six professional singers who have performed at Glyndebourne and the Royal Opera House. For more popular entertainment there is the Festival’s

opening night concert with ‘Bjorn Again – The Music of ABBA’ set in the wonderful grounds of Wiston Estate (29th May). Yet another highlight will be ‘Steyning’s Got Talent’ (5th June) - comedian and compere, Simon Sands, will host the Grand Final of this most popular show featuring guest star, Keith the Thief, finest pickpocket in Britain. Heats will take place on 5th June. To register email jacque.g@btinternet.com or call 07795 186299. Finally, the Festival would not be complete without a tour around the historic and beautiful Steyning Village. For tickets visit Steyning Bookshop, 106 High Street, Steyning or phone 01903 812062.

Many top authors expected

We’re no book buffs at The Resident - it was no coincidence that all those on the editor’s ‘books I’ve read list’ in his GCSE year were also Hollywood films... But even we can see that the organisers of the Steyning Festival have put together a fine programme of 22 authors at various events round the town during the Festival. This kicks off on 31st May at the Country Fair in the bookshop Garden Marquee with puppet shows, crafts and readings by children’s book author and illustrator Gillian McClure, followed on 1st June by a fascinating evening at the Steyning Grammar School Theatre when three bestselling crime writers Peter James, Sophie Hannah and RJ Ellory discuss their work with Chris Taylor of New Writing South. On 5th June in the afternoon, there will be a teatime treat when Bethan Roberts talks about her writing. Then on Sunday at 7.30pm at the Steyning Centre Dickens enthusiasts will get a unique opportunity to hear two eminent Dickens experts in conversation when theatre director and actor Patrick Garland interviews Michal Slater, ex-president of the Dickens Society. Once again there will

be a wonderful array of children’s authors, with poet and artist Janina Karpinska running an unusual button collage craft session on 2nd June and Nick Sharratt returning to lead a fun-filled workshop on 5th June, also in the bookshop Garden Marquee. On 8th June Steyning will be hosting award-winning writers Gillian Cross, author of the perennially popular Demon Headmaster books, who has just written a marvellous new book for older children ‘Where I Belong’, and Paul Dowswell, author of many exciting fiction and non-fiction historical books , whose nail-bitingly tense and chilling story of a Polish orphan in World War Two has been shortlisted for the Independent Booksellers’ Book of the Year. The programme now includes a surprise visit from Julia Donaldson, best-selling author of ‘The G r u f f a l o ’, who will be at the

Bookshop Marquee at 4pm on 9th June. On 10th popular writers Sophie McKenzie, winner of the Richard and Judy children’s book prize for her children’s thriller Girl Missing, and Dinah Capparucci , author of the wacky Aliens Don’t Eat Dog Food will spend the day in schools and visit the bookshop marquee. Then on Sunday afternoon Lucy Jago will be at the Bookshop Marquee talking about her children’s historical novel, Montecute House. Cookery writer Prue Leith who will be at the library on Saturday 12th June to talk about her new career as a novelist, and Barbara Trapido is at the Steyning Centre on the evening of Wednesday 9th June to talk about her latest fiction in hardback ‘Sex and Stravinsky’. Finally, the Festival is extremely privileged to be able to welcome the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy on Monday 14th June at the Steyning Centre at 6.30pm. Programmes are available to download at www.steyningfestival.co.uk For tickets to any event drop into Steyning Bookshop, 106 High Street, Steyning or phone 01903 812062.

Weird news from Planet Earth

Armless man’s fight A man famous for driving a lorry despite having no hands is suing his local police force for the right to drive legally. He Yuelin, 49, of Lijiang, Yunnan province, lost his hands as a nine-year-old when playing with a discarded bomb, reports New Law Daily. He has been driving lorries since 1984 - and has appeared on television for his driving

skills - but has never been able to get a license. "Over the years I've had so many fine tickets that I can't even count them all," he said.

A German postman has married his cat after being told by the vet that the ill feline would not live much longer. Uwe Mitzscherlich, a 39-yearold from Dresden, even dressed up Cecilia in white for the big day, reports Metro.co.uk. An actress had to perform registrar duties after gobsmacked officials refused to carry out the

ceremony Mitzscherlich bought the fiveyear-old Cecilia in 2000 and claims it was love at first sight.

A US reporter made the ultimate Freudian slip when she announced that Tiger Woods had to withdraw from a golf tournament because of his "bulging d***". Win McMurray made the mistake as she tried to explain why Woods had pulled out of the Players Championship in Florida The golfer had blamed a "bulging disk" in his neck, but

McMurray, from the Golf Channel, was left red-faced when she describe the condition as a "bulging d***". The reporter quickly corrected herself.

School governors have sacked a philosophy teacher from his job after discovering his secret life - as a blood smeared death metal rock singer. By day shaven-headed Thomas Gurrath, 29, discussed ethics with his 14-year-old pupils at his high school in Stuttgart. But by night he calls himself The Bloodbeast and writhes around

on stage covered in animal blood with topless backing singers and his band Debauchery.

Cyclops-like monster ‘nailed up’ in church Neil Arnold Monsters, ghosts and ghouls correspondent

As a full-time researcher into tales of monsters, I spend a lot of time trawling old newspaper and journal archives, simply in the hope that I’ll come across something unusual. Many old tales of encounters with mysterious beasts are often lost to the modern day, but some, when found, turn out to be very extraordinary and a privilege to bring them to light. The following excerpt isn’t exactly paranormal, but it shows how monsters have always been feared by local communities, and possibly exa g g e ra te d by those w h o

A young man in the neighbourhood was supposed to have generated the monster by bestial copulation and that the rather, because he was afterwards found in the like beastly act with a mare; upon discovery whereof, he fled out of the country. This young monster was nailed up in the church porch of the said parish, and exposed to public view a long time, as a monument of divine judgement’ I would be fascinated to find any further records of this unfortunate creature whether it was proven to be a hoax, or some deformed animal. A ghoulish tale indeed.

Group receive award from acting legend Sir Michael Caine once said: “First of all, I choose the great roles, and if none of these come, I choose the mediocre ones, and if they don't come, I choose the ones that pay the rent.” Well not only does that explain Jaws IV: The Revenge, they’re also words that may ring true for all actors, from the Hollywood A-list to local dramatics group performers. And perhaps the members of Horsham based Manor Theatre Group were able to pick up some other handy advice from the great British actor when they met him at an awards night last week. Having entered the Leatherhead Drama Festival for the first time ever, Manor Theatre Group were the proud recipients of the 2010 Richard Houghton Award for “outstanding contribution to the Festival”. The award was presented to them by the Patron of the Festival, Sir Michael Caine. Manor’s entry was PVT. WARS by James McClure, a play which ob-

(Pic: http://www.andynewboldphotography.com/) serves three G.I.s as they while away their time in a room of an Army hospital, recovering from Vietnam injuries. Gately, a ‘hillbilly’, fiddles compulsively with a radio. Silvio, a streetwise, big-city type, is addicted to ‘flashing’ nurses. Meanwhile, Natwick, a prissy ‘rich kid’

from Long Island, writes letters to his mother. The play blends a meaningful mosaic as the three tease, torment, entertain, exasperate and, on occasion, solace each other - maintaining throughout a hilarity that belies their deep concern about the uncertainties of the civilian world

to which they will soon be returning. Director Dennis Manning took the role of Pvt. Natwick alongside Darren Worsfold (Pvt. Gately) and Luigi Paiano (Pvt. Silvio). Production manager Robin Christian ensured everything ran smoothly and technicians John Oade (sound) and Craig Bunce (lighting) created the superb ambience of the well-rounded piece. Manor Theatre Group has been providing a wide range of entertainment in the Horsham area for the past 30 years and has always strived to provide top quality professional performances. To receive an award for its debut entry at the Leatherhead Festival was a great achievement and the group hopes that this award will encourage future support from the Horsham residents they strive to entertain. Katerina’s display

Horsham based photographer, Andrew Bennett is exhibiting limited edition framed prints and canvasses from his fine art collection in the Gallery at Katerina’s in Horsham’s Carfax. The exhibition which opened last weekend features landscapes and natural form abstracts, and is open to the public. Speaking about the exhibition Bennett said: “I like to explore a subject through my photographs, so there is a natural symmetry and fluidity to the work I am exhibiting at Katerina’s. The jewellery sold in Katerina’s is individual and that’s what I am looking for in my work.” The exhibition runs until the end of June. More at www.talloaksphotography.com

In it together: Sally Gandon, Nigel Winter, Sue Petritz, Peter Alison and Sue Jago What’s going on? First our political parties decide they’re betting off working together, and now the lawyers are at it! Eight different firms based in Horsham, Crawley and other West Sussex towns have formed a Collaborative Law firm, with the aim of working together to take much of the pain out of family proceedings, such as divorce. The purpose of the Collaborative

process is to reach solutions together with the use of joint meetings between the parties and their solicitors., hopefully without the need of the going to court. It’s as though the solicitors have finally realised what the rest of us have known for years - that there must be an easier way! Collaborative Law is a relatively new way of dealing with legal issues involving divorce and related dis-

putes without the need to go to court. You set the agenda so that you talk about the things that matter most to you and your family. You also set the pace because you are not governed by the demands of the court . Member Nigel Winter of Rawlinson Butler said: “Collaborative Law is not an easy or soft option and both parties must have a genuine desire to make it work. “There must be a willingness to disclose fully and honestly information about all assets. An agreement will be signed at the outset that you will reach a solution without asking the court to intervene. “There will be a time, maybe in 20 years, when we all look back in disbelief at the way we used to do divorces.” Under Collaborative Law, Resolution lawyers are committed to a non-confrontation approach to divorce, and encourage couples to seek shared solutions and to reach agreement. In a statement on the website, the lawyers state: ‘The traditional way of dealing with the break-

down of the relationship remains one of ‘us and them’. You instruct your solicitor who fires off a letter to your spouse, and they rush off to their lawyer and the paperwork starts flying back and forward and the legal bills mount up. ‘Both you and your spouse may become entrenched in positions where you really do not want to be. ‘There is also a danger that you feel excluded from the decisionmaking process, but you have every right to expect that your voice should be heard, and acknowledged, and that you are there, at the centre of everything.’ Members of the Collaborative are Peter Alison, Smith Gadd and Co, Horsham; Yvonne Cordwell, Stevens Son And Pope, Burgess Hill; Sally Gandon, Horley, Susan Jago, stevensdrake, Crawley; Sarah Jenkins, Horley; Sue Petritz, Horsham; Nigel Smith, Smith Gadd and Co, Horsham; Nigel Winter, Rawlinson Butler, Horsham For more details visit the website at www.westsussexcollaborativelaw.co.uk

Open to Offers... So much for it being a buyer’s market... Brock Taylor estate agents received 19 offers for one property after hosting an open house event on Saturday. Brock Taylor believes that the open-house practice of selling properties will be-

come increasingly popular once vendors realise how successful it is. Their recent successful run of sales through this method is proving that the agency is correct to stick with their unique selling technique. They have had a hugely successful run on open house

sales over the last few months, with this weekend topping them all. With three houses for sale using this practice, two on the same street, all have received an excess of offers. One of the properties has so far obtained 19 offers proving that the open house method of selling

offers the freedom people need to connect with a house and see its full potential. The two properties that were for offer on the same street have currently received 11 offers. Peter Maskell, director of Brock Taylor, said: “We are very impressed at the huge

turn out of people who viewed the houses and even more so by the enormous excess of offers that were made. We are proud of the services we offer and will continue to pioneer in successful selling techniques to benefit all our clients.” www.brocktaylor.co.uk

A tip: Save, Save, Save! Neil Moore Guy Leonard & Company It’s not just the Camerons and the Browns who are moving home. Lots of other people have decided that it is time for a change. Recent activity in the property market is at levels not seen for several years, and now the election is well and truly out of the way there should be even more decisiveness in the market. Over the past few weeks, while politicians crisscrossed the country, we have been holding an extensive round of face-to-face meetings with our own associated firms throughout the UK. There is no better way to gauge the state of our nation’s property market than

to compare notes with other professionals at the coalface. So here is a report on the market that our new government inherits. It is not a bad picture. Far from it, and many will be pleased that this coalition intends to see off Home Information Packs in the fullness of time. Prices in leading and popular areas close to London and in other large metropolitan areas have surged back to 2007 levels and - in some key locations - have exceeded even these. Most other areas have seen prices rise but not to such a generous extent. First time buyers have not exactly rushed to take advantage of the £250,000 stamp duty holiday set in the last budget, but this is seen as a direct result of there still being some difficulty in agreeing mortgage loans and having to find large deposits. As lenders become more accommodating to borrowers, and more competitive with each other, this situation should improve greatly. The big issue, however, is at the other end of the mar-

ket. Larger homes are coming onto the market in greater numbers. There is clear evidence that most owners of these want to downsize, seeking less but often more contemporary, well-equipped and thermally efficient space. There are many reasons for this – releasing equity for children’s education, helping offspring with mortgage deposits, labour saving, lower day-to-day running costs, lifestyle relocation, provision for pension, etc. But whatever the reason it goes handin-hand with a prevailing concern that the next few years are not going to be so benevolent to those living far beyond their reasonable housing needs. This will put greater pressure on good, middle market homes where prices should respond positively to demand. Larger, older houses away from golden postcodes will still sell, but accurate pricing will be crucial and the days of highly optimistic asking prices in this area may be over for some time to come. It is manageable, top end

houses possessing high specifications and located in the most fashionable of hot spot areas that will really attract the new breed of city bonus spender. So in these turbulent times, both politically and economically, as we all tackle the real fallout of the recession over the coming months, our advice is this. If you are a first time buyer, save, save, save and then buy carefully within your means. If you are a middle market buyer or seller the market is rather rosy for you if you price to sell and buy prudently. If you are a top end seller then get your relocation in first and be fiercely competitive with your price - before many others decide, like you, that downsizing can be both fun and liberating. Fox & Sons offer 90% mortgage Gemma Rice Local mortgage consultant Gemma Rice of estate agent Fox and Sons in Horsham, is delighted to announce the branch is now offering a limited edition, 90% loan to value mortgage range. The new high loan to value product is being offered through Fox and Sons as part of The Connells Group. “This new 90 per cent value mortgage will be welcome news to anyone looking to move this year,” says Gemma. “Whether you are a first-time buyer, or looking to sell up and move, raising a large deposit is a challenge in the current climate, so I am delighted to be able to offer my clients more competitive 90 per cent loans. “This welcome move to offer a more affordable mortgage deal via our national network of mortgage brokers is very encouraging as it shows that lenders are now ready to start extending their lending activity once again, following lobbying by ourselves. “That said, there are limited funds available for this product so I would urge anyone looking to apply to make an appointment with me at the branch as soon as possible and learn of all the details and conditions that apply.”

New Place Manor £1,800,000 Guy Leonard & Co at Pulborough are very pleased to be instructed to offer for sale this historic Grade II * Listed medieval house in london Road, pulborough, for sale at £1,800,000. Probably the oldest property in Pulborough, it was built by Alard de Fleming as a replacement for his ancestral manor which had been destroyed by fire. Queen Elizabeth I visited here on her journey to Cowdray Park. Most of the rooms have the original 13th and 14th Century stone

archways and quoins, as well as exposed beamed ceilings. The Great Hall boasts the widest Tudor fireplace in existence, according to Sussex County Magazine from 1951. This stunning seven bedroom manor house has been carefully restored over recent years and offers a magnificent home with some unique character features. The elevations of stone with stone mullion and leaded light windows under a tiled roof and many original features have been retained

alongside the modern facilities for today’s lifestyle. The accommodation is arranged over three floors and of particular note is the Great Hall with flagstone floor, massive Inglenook fireplace and a vaulted staircase hall with full height mullioned windows and a Minstrel’s Gallery. On the first floor there are four bedroom suites including the Elizabethan room, a galleried bathroom and panelled library. The further three bedrooms are on the second floor.

A high stone arch gateway opens into a walled garden and the stone dovecote incorporates original 16th century mullioned windows. Set in grounds of approx 1.4 acres with a swimming pool, tennis court, outbuildings and garaging for eight cars. A viewing of this property is highly recommended and can be arranged through the Guy Leonard & Co Pulborough office.

Ford scoop honours Ford and Vauxhall were the big winners at the 2010 Fleet World Awards held on 18th May at the Royal Automobile Club in London. Fleet World’s judges chose the Focus for the top award because of its reliable and dependable nature at a time of economic uncertainty. "While the rest of the market grappled with the onslaught of recession, the Ford Focus showed why it is the best car in the fleet market by marching on untouched,” said the judges’ chairman, Fleet World editor Steve Moody. “Sales barely dropped from the year before and outstripped any other model by a distance, illustrating that when businesses want a trustworthy, reliable, efficient and attractive fleet car, their first stop is the Ford Focus.” The Ford Transit Connect was named Fleet World’s Best Small Van, and Ford also collected the Innovation Award for its ECOnetic CV range. Van Fleet

World editor John Kendall said: “One of life’s certainties is that fuel prices will continue to rise. Van fleets can rack up large annual mileages and reducing fuel costs is a top priority. “Ford was one of the first van makers to transfer its fuel consumption reducing technologies from car to van with the launch of the Transit and Fiesta van ECOnetic model last year. It’s just what van fleet operators need.” Ford also won the Best MPV title for the Ford S-MAX. Vauxhall’s all new Astra won the highly coveted ‘Best New Car’ Award. Engine efficiency of the all new Astra, set to be the bestselling British-built car in the UK, has improved

by over 13 per cent on the outgoing range, an important consideration for fleet managers. Chairman of Judges Steve Moody said: ‘In a difficult year for the brand, Vauxhall still showed that it knows how to launch products that the fleet market wants to buy. “Build quality in the new Astra is very impressive; it’s spacious, well-specified for business customers and good to drive too. It’s a British-built car that is really starting to find favour quickly in the fleet market.’ Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles was also successful at the Van Fleet Honours, with

Movano claiming the ‘Best New Van’ award. The Peugeot RCZ Sports Coupé was voted ‘Design of the Year’ and the Volkswagen Polo has been named Best Small Car. The Mazda 6 2.2 litre diesel Estate to be named ‘Best Estate Car’ while the Qashqai and Navara took honours for Nissan. Praised for its ground-breaking design and growing popularity, the Qashqai won the Award for Best Crossover. Chairman of the 2010 Fleet World Honours Judges Steve Moody said: “When almost every other manufacturer talks about having a ‘Qashqai rival’, it’s apparent that Nissan’s crossover has defined an entirely new market, selling i n

strong numbers to fleets and delivering the perfect combination of SUV looks and hatchback running costs.”

Mazda 6

Driving away with the prize in the tough Pickup category, the Navara has also done the business for Nissan.

Veyron up at auction

VW Matches up

Volkswagen is adding a new model to the Golf line-up. Using the familiar Match name, the new variant replaces the SE trim. Prices start at £17,730 RRP OTR for the 1.4-litre TSI three-door. The first customer deliveries will start at the end of June.

A new Concept

A Bugatti Veyron, one of the world’s most desirable supercars, will feature in a massive ‘Fast and Furious’ sale of 350 sports cars at BCA Blackbushe near Camberley in Surrey on Saturday 5th June. The cars have been entered for sale by Lex Autolease and Black Horse and represent one of the

most valuable sales of contemporary vehicles ever staged in the UK. Lex Autolease and Black Horse have worked closely in partnership with BCA to bring together a truly exceptional selection of vehicles for this event. The undoubted star of the Fast & Furious sale is the 2006 Bugatti

Veyron EB 16.4 - just 300 Veyrons were produced by the famed French manufacturer. This example is finished in dark blue metallic over silver metallic and has covered just 7,341 kms from when it was registered in 2006. The sale also features a 2005 Ferrari F430 F1 Coupe, a 2007-

registered Aston Martin DB9 V12 Coupe and a 2004 Maserati 4200 Cambiocorsa Coupe, as well as six Harley-Davidson Motorcycles amongst an entry of 350 vehicles direct from Lex Autolease and Black Horse. The sale is open to all and starts at 10.30am on 5th June. The Supercar section starts at 2pm.

Land Rover has announced that it will introduce a 2WD option (in addition to the 4WD derivative) for the new compact Range Rover. On sale in 2011, the 2WD vehicle will emit less than 130 g/km of CO2 – making it the lightest, most fuel efficient Range Rover ever.

AN AFRICAN JOURNEY WITH JONATHAN DIMBLEBY BBC2, 9pm While some reporters take the road most travelled, Jonathan Dimbleby has never been one of them. During his less controversial days he’s also penned acclaimed biographies of his father, Richard Dimbleby and Prince Charles, and has written and presented a host of impressive documentary films.

Maggs thrilled by Harding decision

A game for girls Horsham FC manager John Maggs was delighted after Pat Harding confirmed he is ready to spearhead the Hornets' attack again next season. The former Eastbourne Borough man marked his first season at Gorings Mead with 25 goals and predictably attracted offers from several interested parties but chose loyalty over financial gain to become one of the first to commit himself to Horsham for the 2010/11 campaign. A delighted Maggs said: "Pat has been very open with me and told me that he could have made a lot more money elsewhere but he has decided to stay for purely footballing reasons and it's an understatement to say that I'm absolutely thrilled with that. “We played him as a striker last season and we all reaped the rewards. He lost some of his appetite at Eastbourne, where he feels he was played out of position, but he is enjoying his football again and wants to contribute towards a successful season with us next season. “In my opinion, this is a massive boost to myself and our supporters and is a very positive move for Horsham Football Club. It shows we have something about us and that we can keep our top players, despite some of the money that other clubs are offering. “It's also very refreshing that players aren't just out for the big bucks. They're prepared to sacrifice that for a settled and stable environment and proves that we're trying to run the club in the right way."

The inaugural Simon Viney memorial tag sevens competition was completed in glorious weather last Sunday. Ten teams attended including sides from Horsham and Holbrook Rugby Club, with Holbrook (above) winning the event, alongside representative sides from Barns Green, a BG Exiles team along with BG Barbarians and a BG first and second team, plus of course the ubiquitous Fat-

Boys to name a few. Despite Holbrook's epic win, defeating Barns Green Exiles in the final, perhaps the highest praise of all should be reserved for the Barns Green ladies entry, the 'WagTags' (below) who have religiously been practising once and sometimes twice a week. Coached by Kieran Harris, they not only produced tries in every game they played in but comprehensively dispatched the BG Vice

Presidents in a wholly one sided Plate final! The memory of Simon is being recorded by support for The Wooden Spoon charity who in turn, are focusing on investment this year at the QE2 School in Horsham. 'Whilst final counting is still taking place we will be very disappointed if we do not hand over more than £2,750 to The Spoon as a direct result of this event and

thus we would like to extend a warm thanks not just to our helpers and sponsors but also to players and spectators who help us create such a fabulous event to honour Simon's memory,” said Phil Kemp, the organiser of the event on behalf of BGRFC. Shephard’s medal haul

A young Southwater gymnast has scooped silverware at Gymnastics’’ National finals in Birmingham. Reece Shephard, nine, only took up gymnastics two years ago, but played a big part in helping his team clinch team gold on 14th15th May. He was one of six youngsters from Pegasus Gymnastics Club in Maidstone, Kent , selected to represent the South East Region at the National finals. His team barely wavered from perfection to win the team title 8.5 ahead of the normally unassailable Eastern region, the home of Britain’s Olympic & European medal winning clubs Huntingdon and South Essex. Reece registered 9.550 on the Pommel Horse with 9.500 on the vault , 9.660 on the parallel bars to win team gold. Reece also won an individual bronze, only just losing out on silver by .05 of a point His dad Mark Shephard said: “Reece loves gymnastics. He has been at Pegasus for one year now, and is just getting better and better. “ Reece has now been officially invited to attend the Team Great Britain training ground in Lillyshaw where gold medalists Daniel Keatings and Louis Smith train.”

Magic Marco There might be a time when we start leaving a designated weekly space in our sports pages for the latest report on Marco Penge. For the young golf prodigy could well have a future in the sport, although he still has a bit of a way to go yet, of course. He made national headlines in 2008 when, aged nine, he beat a 34-year-old opponent at The Mail on Sunday's Golf Classic. The Forest Boys pupil celebrated his 12th birthday last week and is now playing off a handicap of 3.8. And at the start of the new golf season he has quickly got into the swing of things. He played at a Carol Mary Tournament Dyke Golf Club on a cold and blustery day on 16th May (we seem to forget how cold it was just two weeks ago!) a Sussex county event in which Marco represented the under 14s and the West region. He won the age group by finishing two over par. A few days later he played in a Nick Faldo Series qualifier at Royal Ashdown Golf Club, Marco

played in the under 16s. After the first day Marco shot 4 over and was in 6th. Dad Angelo said: “On day two he was determined to go and play his game and come back with a respectable score and was hoping to achieve a top five finish. He did believe that he could possib l y

win it. “His game was going great guns and he was one over at the 17th. He scuffed his drive and ended up in the thick heather to finish the 17th with a double bogey and finished three over. “By this time he was feeling slightly disappointed and said he should have never doubled the 17th.

“Once the group finished it was then known to him that he was tied for first place and had to play a three hole sudden death play off.” On the third, Marco hit his second shot to green and landed the ball on the fringe of the green. His opponent landed his same shot approx 5ft from the hole. Angelo said: “Lots of spectators crowded round the green to watch. Marco was looking as calm and focused as ever. As soon as he pulled the putter out the bag, I heard one of the spectating Sussex boys saying he would have chosen a small lob shot. “Marco was faced with a 40ft downhill putt. He holed the putt and everyone was in awe of it! His opponent missed his putt, leaving Marco the well deserved winner.” Marco was presented with a gold Faldo medal and an invitation to the Nick Faldo grand final to be held in September at Lough Erne Resort, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, where he will also meet Nick Faldo. Marco is the youngest player to have ever won the under 16's qualifier.

Horsham Ladies started their season by celebrating the 90th birthday of one of their members. Mrs Betty Groves, although no longer bowling, regularly helps with the teas at the Club and the Ladies decided to entertain her to Afternoon Tea at South Lodge Hotel, Lower Beeding. The first match of the season against Beach Park, Worthing resulted in a narrow loss by 3 shots. Top Rink was led by Pam Venn with Fran Baillie, Barbara Hill and Gwyneth Main in support. One of Horsham's players, Phyllis Holt, played for the opposition as they were one player short. In the second match of the season Horsham Ladies lost to a very strong team from Field Place Worthing. Top Rink honours went to Pam Venn, Di Taylor and skip Angela Machell. Betty is pictured third from left, front row

Victory for Hotshots Having honed their skills at Horsham Park on Saturday mornings, young footballers enjoyed a competitive tournament at the weekend. The tournament was hosted by North Sussex Football Academy at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre for children in school years 1-6. Harry’s Hotshots won the Years 1&2 tournament, beating runners-up Broadbridge Heath, while The Strikers beat Ambassadors Panthers to win the Years

3&4 contest. The Saturday Strikers and Red Rebels were winners and runners-up in the Years 5&6 contest. Ted Streeter, coach with the Football Academy, said: “I would like to thank the sports centre who allowed us to use the courts for free, Bedford Sports, who provided trophies for the winners and runners-up, and of course all the players who took part.” You can train with the Academy at 10am every Saturday morning, for £3

King of the World Jolyon Palmer completed a sensational double victory at Italy’s historic Monza circuit at the weekend. The teenage racing driver from Southwater now leads the Formula 2 championship. Palmer was the man to beat for almost the entire weekend, having claimed pole position on the Saturday, after which he said: “Monza has been a good track for me so far! "I've never been here before this weekend but I've really got to grips with it, I love the place and it couldn't be going any better so far. I just got a good lap together and used my boosts perfectly - a two second improvement was more than I thought, but it was a great lap." But it did get better for Jolyon, as he claimed victory in race one. Starting from pole, Palmer made a solid start to keep the lead into the first corner before second placed Johan Jokinen boosted past the 19-year-old on the run down to the second chicane. The Dane's joy was to be short lived however, as he received a drive through penalty from the race stewards. Dean Stoneman became Palmer's main rival - the Marrakech race winner having enjoyed a storming start to the race to move from eighth on the

grid to fourth on the opening lap. He later made a stellar pass on Kazim Vasiliauskas for third position, which then became second after Jokinen's penalty and he quickly set about attacking Palmer for the lead - the pair even making contact during the safety car period! Palmer was able to hold on in the closing stages, however, with his victory setting up a fascinating championship battle with just two points separating Philipp Eng, Dean Stoneman and Palmer in the overall standings. But Palmer then raced into the championship lead by taking a second win in race two. A good start helped him to maintain position and from there he never looked back, taking victory just under four seconds clear of Sergey Afanasiev in second. Palmer's third win of the season now gives him a 12 point advantage in the overall standings, although the Briton is not getting carried away at such an early stage. “At Marrakech I think Philipp and Dean both thought it was a two horse race the championship - it's obviously not, I've had a great weekend and it proves the championship is very open. It's great to be leading at this stage but there's a long way to go."
