Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 231 DRMR 248 Fany A 2/0 M. Comments: Marseille, circa 1915. Solid domed bisque socket head, blue glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined space between the lips, blonde mohair wig, composition body with jointing at shoulders, hips and knees, painted black shoes and socks, antique costume. Bisque socket head with heart-shaped face, small blue glass sleep eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, short feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 2033 BSW (in heart) 537. Comments: Bahr and Proschild for Bruno Schmidt, circa 1912, the model is known by collectors as “Wendy”. Value Points: compelling dear expression, characterized by heart-shaped face, upturned nose, small eyes and full generous lips, original body and body finish, original wig, wearing beautiful antique costume highlighted by pale velvet coat with fur trim, matching silk ribboned bonnet and unusual antique tan shoes with pale green sateen rosette and edging. $6000/8000
40. Early German Wooden Theatre and Collection of Carved Puppets 19” (48 cm.) h. x 11”w. theatre. Included are thirteen handcarved wooden hand puppets with original vibrantly painted features depicting various characters from 1800s children’s theatre stories, and including jesters, policeman with beard, stern burgermeister, postman, scowling bonneted lady, smiling bonneted lady, bearded man with turban, devil, and others, and including carved dog. Each head is attached to original cloth costume with attached wooden arms and legs; the costume designed for insertion of human hand to provide theatre action. Included with the puppets is a wooden theater with fabric curtain drapes and decorative paper covers. Excellent condition. Germany, late 1800s, a remarkable large collection of imaginatively carved and painted characters in fine state of preservation. $1200/1500

42. Important and Very Rare Bavarian Painted Blanket Chest with Hand-Forged Iron Brackets 18” (46 cm.) w. x 13”h. x 9”d. The sturdy wooden blanket chest with hinged lid is decorated with elaborately painted star design on the top lid surrounded by painted block borders, and has finely painted design on the front depicting bountiful flowers in doublehandled urn; the floral design is repeated on both sides. Handforged heavy iron hinges support the lid and are visible both inside and back exterior, and form a keyhole with original iron key. The inside of the chest features a small hinged lid tray at the side. Near mint condition, perfectly preserved original painting. Germany, early 1800s. $3500/4500 43. Bisque socket head with elongated face suggesting older child, painted brown eyes in deeply-defined sockets, thick upper eyeliner, modeled creases under the eyes, one-stroke delicate brows, slightly upturned nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth, very full lips enhanced by shading and delicate glaze, brunette hand-tied human hair wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body, antique folklore costume and coiffe, undergarments, wooden shoes. 44. Seven German Cloth Caricature Dolls from Kammer and Reinhardt 12” (30 cm.) Each is of padded stockinette over posable wire armature and with wooden feet, having stitched and painted facial features, yarn hair, some with yarn beards or sideburns, and each is wearing factory original costume. Condition: good/very good, all original albeit dusty. Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, the caricature series were presented in the firm’s 1012 catalog. Value Points: depicted are occupational men in amusing poses, including shoe cobbler, organ grinder with monkey, conductor, and various others such as professor and student. $1200/1600
45. Rare Miniature Bavarian Wooden Cabinet with Painted Decorations 7 ½” (19 cm.) The pinewood cabinet is designed with an arched back, miniature box on the top surface with decorative brackets and with one working drawer, and with two larger drawers below, and is decorated with hand painted floral and scroll designs in shades of red, yellow and green. All-cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features, shaded brown hair with forelock curl, shaded blue/grey eyes, pronounced black and brown upper eyeliner, accented nostrils, closed mouth with downcast pensive expression, stitch-jointed shoulders, wide disc-jointed fiveseam legs, separately-stitched thumbs. 50. Outstanding Early Carved Austrian Wooden Cabinet with Hand-Forged Iron Lock 11” (28 cm.) h. x 10”w. x 5 ½”d. The heavy wooden cabinet with original dark finish features carved mounts on double front doors which have original decorative painted outlines in sienna and teal blue. The doors open to a fitted interior with eight wooden-knobbed drawers. The exterior features a hand-forged keyhole with key, and when the door is opened an elaborate and intricate locking system is revealed. The cabinet is preserved in remarkable original structural and painted finish. Austrian, late 1700s. $3500/4500

Displayed upon a carved ebony wood and bone pedestal is a framed lithopane depicting a courtier with flute who is merrily dancing, with countryside in the background. Excellent condition. English, early 1800s, rare original presentation of detailed lithopane, designed to be viewed with lighted background for greatest depiction of details. $600/800
