Saturday and Sunday,
May 15-16, 2021
at Theriault’s Studio in Annapolis, Maryland The Auction Begins at 11AM Eastern Both Days
“AND THEN THE PAGE TURNS...” A CATALOGED MARQUIS AUCTION OF FINE ANTIQUE DOLLS Fashion springs forward during Theriault’s May 2021 auction events. Dolls stand proudly in original fashionable clothing of their era, veritable threedimensional “documents” of historical fashions. For collectors who crave to see, study, or, hopefully, own these treasures, May is the month to be at Theriault’s. On Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16, turn back time. The study of antique dolls in their fashion presents 150 years of changing styles, 1770-1930, ranging from a regal early English wooden lady with complete original trousseau to French poupées, including Huret, with elegant costumes of their era to French bébés in attire designed for them in the studios of Ernestine Jumeau and others, to German children

in their child styles of the early 1900s and finally to the 1930s fashionable dolls in children’s costumes presented by Lenci, as well as American doll firms who transformed the entire “look” of the doll whose fashion evolved from the dainty idealistic little girl to the frolicking imp. In all these eras, the fashion, the style, the haute couture was of paramount importance. Collectors of fashion dolls (whether the dolls are ladies or children) from all eras are correct to admire the meticulous care that went into the selection of fabrics, designs, accessories, and the very way the costume “sat” upon the doll’s body. These exquisite dolls, whether of the 1860s or the 1950s, are truly miniature historical fashion models and the true doll connoisseur acknowledges this. Historical “documents”, indeed! The 150-page full-color catalog with detailed descriptions of each lot can be ordered for $59. For more information or to order the catalog visit www.theriaults.com or call 410-224-3655. There are many options for bidding including traditional absentee bidding, live telephone bidding, live internet bidding, and pre-bidding on internet. Collectors are invited to telephone Theriault’s customer service at 410-224-3655, email info@theriaults.com or visit www.theriaults.com. Appointments can also be made to remotely view specific lots prior to the auction.x

The Well-Bred English Wooden Doll Standing front and center of any doll collection fortunate enough to offer haven would surely be an English wooden doll of the mid1700s. That the doll would also be of regal stature and with a distinctive portrait-like face would seal its role as the queen of the collection. And should that doll also be the owner of a fine trousseau of costumes, some from its own moment of creation, and others of later decades, her triumph is complete. Such a doll is the 29” English wooden lady, circa 1740, presented at Theriault’s Marquis May auction “And Then The Page Turns…”. Previously the property of the Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art,

An inside view of the front panel of the silk robe a la Francaise illuminates the applied stiffening rods which are likely bamboo or quill and are entirely hand-stitched.
The trousseau of the doll includes two “pockets” designed to be hidden inside the folds of a gown skirt, for hiding coins, keys, a hanky or other treasure. The doll owns two pairs of shoes which were handmade specifically to fit her hand-carved feet. The fine jewelry brooch is intricately constructed.
and featured in the book The Heart of the Tree, Early Wooden Dolls to the 1850s, by Rosalie Whyel and Jill Gorman wherein the doll was described as a “superb example” of its type, the doll is costumed in an 18th century gold embroidered silk faille robe a la francaise, a popular style throughout the period 1720 and 1780, constructed from the same fabric as a similar gown created for the actual lady of the doll’s manor; that lady gown is also offered in the auction, just as it was shown in the Museum.

Three other costumes of particular note, dating to the origin of the doll, are of finely woven cotton fabrics with handmade block-print or dye-painted designs. One of the robes has a crisp chintz finish achieved by a complex and time-consuming mordanting of the fabric after the hand-painted or block-printed designs were applied. Another robe has an intriguing reverse print center panel framed by a hand-stitched silk braid border. In all, the doll owns 12 gowns, most of them especially created for the doll during the mid-1700s. Yet, evidently the doll remained in high esteem within her family for many decades, passing from one generation to another, as four of the gowns, which were indubitably made for this doll, date from about 1840, nearly a century after the actual doll was created. The title of the auction “And Then The Page Turns…” is aptly symbolized by this doll whose wardrobe is a study in fashion changes over a century. And as for the doll, itself, she is a wonder. Her size is perfect, not only commanding respect, but also an

indication that she was originally commissioned for an aristocratic estate, for only the wealthy could afford the price that the larger dolls commanded. So, too, is her portrait like expression, with subtle shaping of the head, a dainty little chin, eyes demurely cast down, and yet a stately bearing to offset the beguiling humility. Now nearly three hundred years old, this outstanding doll, packed with all costumes and accoutrements, will continue her life story as the page turns to the next chapter at Theriault’s May 15-16 Marquis auction. x

Two Doll Specialty Upcoming Friday, May 21, 2021 ALEXANDER DOLLS – THE THIRD GOLDEN ERA A “50-FORWARD” AUCTION AT 7PM EASTERN Dolls by Madame Alexander and the Alexander Doll Company spanned three Golden Eras. First, the celebrity and child dolls of the 1930s, followed by the extraordinary fashion ladies of the 1950s, and finally by the new-yet-retro designs of the late 1980s through early 2000s. It is this final group that is the focus of Theriault’s May 21, “50-Forward” auction. Highlighted are dolls produced just prior to the sale of the company in 1988, followed by the reinvigorated line after the sale when a completely new team of designers headed by Daun Fallon joined the company, along with selections from the Gale Jarvis years when totally new fashion-face sculpts and limited edition runs made exclusively for doll club events or luxury stores such as Neiman Marcus or FAO Schwarz were created. Most of these dolls are mint in original boxes, complete with accessories and documents, from the private collections of the Trudy Butler and Martha Hester, where they have been carefully stored for a number of years. The dolls will be sold in Theriault’s popular new auction format “50 Forward”, an online timed auction where every lot opens at $50. To view the collection or to bid, visit www.theriaults.com, click on “bid online” and click on the “Alexander Dolls- The Third Golden Era”. x

Come Visit The New FlorenceandGeorge.com In the early 1970s Florence and George Theriault cast off their lucrative and stable careers to open a small country auction house in rural Pennsylvania. They didn’t make more money, they made less. They didn’t work fewer hours, they worked more, but they were their own bosses. Within ten years that small auction company became an internationally renowned antique auction firm. Later Theriault’s moved to Annapolis, Maryland, and a sister company, Dollmasters, was founded by Florence and George. Where Theriault’s would offer people unparalleled antique collectibles, Dollmasters presented collectors with a mix of handcrafted art pieces and old store stock discovered by Florence and George as they toured the world gathering antiques. Dollmasters distinguished itself as the mail-order company that didn’t simply offer every item it could find; they picked and chose the ones they would be proud to have in their own homes.
Shopping couldn’t be easier at the great new Florence and George! Better, faster, and still the name you’ve come to trust with F&G!
Four decades later, Dollmasters changed its name to Florence and George to celebrate the original entrepreneurial spirit of its founders. But like Dollmasters, Florence and George is still committed to offering you nothing we wouldn’t put in our homes. Florence and George: For collectors, by collectors.
