OPEN-MINDED: DESIGNING A LOFT-STYLE BATHROOM room an elegant touch. It will become a focal point in your open-space layout. Vibrant metal finishing on the claw feet makes the tub look especially stunning. Remember to choose matching bath fixtures. Loft-style rooms usually have exposed plumbing, and so do antique and vintage clawfoot bathtubs. Both floor- and deck-mounted styles will work great. To enhance the industrial touch, consider installing a pedestal sink. It has a streamlined basin that fits ideally with the minimalism of loft-style space. Freestanding showers with glass walls and rain shower heads will add a luxury vibe. Furthermore, as you are satisfied with your breathtaking contemporary bathroom, you can use those styling tips to redesign the other rooms in your house.

Think layout first. For example, you can turn your sleeping and bathing quarters into one complete space by removing the wall that the bathroom shares with the master bedroom. Place stylish short partitions between the rooms if you wish more privacy. Next step is the styling! That includes infusing some vintage components into the contemporary space. CEMENT RULES: MAINTAINING CEMENT TILES
C
ement tiles are known for their elegant matte finish and interesting patterns. These adorable elements are often featured on floors and backsplashes. They are produced from pigmented cement and powdered marble by an eco-friendly method - sans glaze, which also makes them resistant to chipping.
Generally, cement tiles are similar to other types in price; however, due to their porous nature, they require some extra attention. Learn how to take proper care of these kitchen beauties.
INSTALLATION Before grounding your tiles, apply a sealer to avoid stains. Consider reapplying it every two-three years after.
CLEANING Try washing your backsplash and floor tiles every week with water and mild dish detergent. Consider using a neutral-pH cleaner: acidic detergents can break through the sealer, causing damage. Then wipe again with just water and blot it with a cloth. Try to clean wine, coffee, sauces and other spills right away. If they remain on the tile surface for a long time, it can stain. Often getting those stains out of grout requires a lot of physical effort. Hot water and a hard brush will help you to succeed. If some spots are still visible, you might have to try the same trick using an alkaline cleaner like baking/ washing soda or borax. Test it first in the least conspicuous spot to make sure the cleaner works without discolouring the tiles.
PROTECTION You can determine whether the tile needs to be resealed by placing a drop of water on it. Do you see the slight shift of the shade? Then it’s time to update the coat. Generously apply sealer on the clean, dry surface, using a large brush. Don’t forget to wear rubber gloves and let lots of fresh air in. After five minutes, clean residue with a towel. As for a floor, keep off of it for at least a day after resealing.

How to Choose The Right Wall Decor For Your Home
T
By Dale Harris
he way you decorate your home can be a reflection of your personality. You want to pick items that enhance the space you’re working within, but also pieces that match your unique style.
Finding wall decor that strikes that balance can feel daunting, especially as home renovation shows and DIY blogs promote a picture perfect ideal. It’s important to keep in mind that you don’t need to make your home look like a picture out of a magazine. You just need to make it a space that is meaningful to you. Whether you’re taking on a full remodel or just wanting to spruce up your walls, the right decor can make all the difference. Below, we’re sharing easy tips for picking the right wall decor for your home. Read on to learn more, and start decorating!
There are a lot of reasons why you might want to incorporate your personal values and belief into your wall decor. Choosing

Choose a piece of motivational art that is meaningful. Maybe it’s a favourite saying or phrase. Maybe it’s an image that uplifts you. Whatever it is, put it in a place where you will see it every day and let it inspire you.
FRAME YOUR MEMORIES Filling your walls with framed pictures is another great way to share who you are through your decor. Great pictures from past vacations or unique portraits of friends and family are great options for any room. Seeing them can be a reminder of wonderful past experiences or can make you feel closer to loved ones who live far away. The best thing about this kind of decor is that it will be personal to you. No one else will have those same photos and it’s your way to make your unique mark on your space.

a piece that is personally meaningful can help you maintain a positive attitude.
Small plants add both colour and liveliness to any space. There are several interesting ways that you can incorporate plants into your decor. For plants like succulents, which grow in smaller pots, consider building a

shelf on one wall, and lining all your pots up side by side. If you prefer larger, hanging plants, you can screw decorative hooks or nails into your walls. Besides adding a clean, natural look to any room, taking care of houseplants has been linked to improved mental health and a better mood.
ADD AN ACCENT COLOR If you prefer a more minimal look, you may not want to add a lot of different elements to your walls. In that case, painting your walls may be a good option. A subtle colour throughout a room can be calming, but if you prefer to be a little bolder, choose a bright colour and paint one wall to be the focal point of the room.
READY TO START CHOOSING WALL DECOR? No matter what your personal style is, the way you decorate your home should be a reflection of that. With these tips in mind, you can start shopping for the elements that will make your home feel uniquely yours. Source: www.articlecity.com

HOT FLOW: Perfect Your Microwave Placement
M
ost Canadian families have a microwave, but where to put it depends mainly on how they use it and their kitchen’s layout. Here’s a look at some ideas to complement the flow of your kitchen.
of a deep cabinet that may otherwise have hard-to-reach items.
IN THE ISLAND Want to keep your microwave out of sight? The island can cover it up while saving the
main cabinets for storage. In addition, you can put the microwave away from the main cooking area, avoiding to bump into someone who is making popcorn while you are cooking. However, if you have a counter with a deep lip, a low microwave becomes harder to reach.
ON THE COUNTERTOP The countertop is, probably, the most popular spot to find a microwave in a modern kitchen. This placement helps to keep the natural flow of the room and keep the microwave within a reasonable reach when you are cooking. Admittedly, placing your microwave near the fridge and sink is a simple and accessible option for most homeowners. Nevertheless, this placement won’t be the best idea if you’re tight on countertop space, as your microwave might decrease the room’s flow. To avoid the risk, make sure you measure your countertop and know the ideal microwave size.
BELOW THE COUNTER Don’t have enough counter or upper cabinet space to use? Try replacing a lower drawer with a microwave cabinet. This way, your kitchen will look neat and spacious. However, if you use your microwave very often, it might become tiring to move dishes in and out. Also, consider choosing a less dangerous placement if you have curious small kids.
INTEGRATED INTO CABINETRY For a sleek modern appeal of your appliances, you can customize the cabinet so it creates an ideal frame for your microwave. Remember, however, that if the microwave is placed very far from a counter, the risk increases of holding a hot plate and having nowhere to set it right away.
ANGLED WITH THE CORNER OF THE COUNTER Are you a lucky owner of a large kitchen? Reserve of one those deep corners for your microwave. This option makes perfect use

TIPS FOR WINDOW REPLACEMENT
R
eplacing windows is a big investment. If you’ve been thinking about purchasing new windows for your home, here are some things to consider:
CHANGE UP YOUR STYLE When looking for a new car, you’re probably not going to purchase the same model (unless you really love that car). Most people want to upgrade, change the colour, get more features, etc. The same thing applies to windows. You don’t have to replace your windows with the same style. For example, if you live in a bungalow and want maximum security for your large windows in the front of your

house, you might want to change to a fixed window, with security glass, or add a highsecurity European tilt and turn window. Want to add colour to your windows? If you’ve been watching designer TV shows, you could notice that black interior windows are popular, but why restrict your palette to just black? Designers often like to personalize windows by having them painted a custom colour. We’ve seen baby blue, light grey, teal and red windows. Colourful windows can really make your room stand out. Why not have fun with some colour?! Your window style and colour choices can change the entire look of your home. For example, hung windows generally suit more historic- or cottage-looking homes, while fixed windows and casements suit the contemporary architecture. You want to choose windows that go well with the design and appearance of your home.
DON’T OVERLOOK THE INSTALLATION Many people have bought expensive windows and doors only to be disappointed with premature failure due to bad installations. It is always worthwhile to pay a little more for professional installation. Windows are a big investment so be sure to do your homework before purchasing.
A LOWER PRICE ISN’T ALWAYS THE BEST OPTION We all know the saying “You get what you pay for”. Therefore, if you’re comparing different window companies, don’t let price be the determining factor. Buying a window is not like buying new cushions for your couch. This is an investment in your home for energy efficiency, security, functionality and aesthetics. Stay within your budget, but don’t always go for the lower price because, in a few years, you could be looking to replace your windows again, and that would double or even triple the amount you’ve spent.
IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS In order for you to get the best windows for your home, it is best that you choose a company that will take your home design and energy requirements into account and give you a free consultation. That way, they can see your space first hand and provide you with professional advice. We hope these tips have given you some guidance on what to think about when replacing your windows. Your home is one of your biggest investments, and you should be confident and happy with any home renovation project. Happy window shopping!

FLOORING FAMILY STYLE
S
tylish hard-wearing flooring options are everywhere these days. It can be hard to decide which one is best for you and your family. As a designer, who has a young family, I always look into designing spaces that are stylish but also familyfriendly. And flooring is a top priority in my projects. Often, I am drawn to materials that are highly durable, washable and timeless. Indeed, it’s hard to find something more important for families nowadays. So how do you know where to start? Believe it or not, there are a lot of Canadian companies offering more choices in finishes and styles than ever before. You can pick anything from engineered hardwood to laminate to vinyl. One great resource for a wide selection of products in Canada is Fuzion Flooring, with over 150 engineered wood products, 100
styles of hard-wearing LVT types of vinyl and laminates to choose from. Familyfriendly classic engineered hardwoods are one of my go-to products. Not only do they look like the real deal (solid hardwood), but they are sustainable and durable too. As flooring is the foundation of your design, I always recommend to start with it and ensure you understand how durable the floor needs to be. Can you use hardwood in the kitchen? Of course, the answer is YES. We use engineered hardwood in kitchens, especially in open concept homes. Engineered wood works better than solid hardwood when dealing with moisture. Its plywood base is dimensionally stable, meaning that it warps and flexes less easily upon contact with moisture than solid wood.

If you are concerned about waste and the environment as much as I am, engineered wood flooring is a great option. It will last from 20 to 100 years, depending on the thickness of the top veneer. The best engineered wood floors will last as long and perform as well as solid plank floors. Once installed, an engineered wood floor can be difficult to distinguish from a solid floor. As a bonus, they tend to be easier to install than traditional solid plank floors, and they’re usually less expensive. Various companies offer a selection of wide plank and more traditional widths. When selecting a finish for your floor, remember that glossy-looking material shows all the dirt and sticky footprints (not ideal for a house full of kids). Matte finishes that are trending now, hide it all. This style of finish offers warmth and visual interest and truly works with many styles of homes. Not all wood floors are equal, and there are many species of wood that get made into floors have different characteristics. Understanding these characteristics will help you choose the wood floor that works best for you. When selecting the perfect familyfriendly flooring for your home, make sure to do your homework. Ask questions and ensure you enlist the help of the professional designers like myself and (if needed) professionals for installation ease.

How to Create and Write a Pet Resume Your Landlord Will Appreciate tick controls etc. You should also provide proof that all vaccinations are up to date.

hen it comes to choosing things for your pets, you want nothing but the best of the best. Consider choosing the best dog pools. This is a great way to give your dog something he or she loves, water and playtime! But, what about choosing the best house or apartment for yourself, where your pet will reside with you? That’s a little bit more tricky because regardless of how friendly or playful your pet is, landlords will be skeptical. And, that’s why you should learn how to create a winning pet resume that will land you in the abode of your dreams without much hassle. If you’re wondering what a pet resume for renting is, then you’ve come to the right place. Here, we’re discussing how to create one so that you can continue choosing the best for your pet, without making sacrifices yourself. Keep reading to learn more.
CREATING A PET RESUME YOUR POTENTIAL LANDLORD WILL ADORE We all know that choosing the best dog pools is a lot easier than choosing the best landlord. But, creating a pet resume for a
16

rental is actually quite simple. You just need to detail basic information about your pet so that your potential landlord can get a better understanding of their behaviour.
HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO LIST ON YOUR PET’S RESUME: Name Your pet’s name is just as important as the other information you will provide. This gives the landlord a glimpse into your connection with your pet. For example, a cute name will appeal to many people while a name that implies aggressiveness will most likely prompt the landlord to be more wary of renting to you.
Age Age isn’t a huge factor, but it’s a good idea to mention it. Some landlords will shy away from puppies and other young animals because they are more prone to messes.
Breed Generally, the breed of your dog will help your landlord determine the approximate weight and size of your pet. You should include this information anyway.
Health and Vaccinations Make note of whether your animal is spayed or neutered, microchips, flea and
e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com
If you have put your pet through a training program, you can provide those certifications. Otherwise, make it clear how well trained your pet is to make the landlord more comfortable.
Final Thoughts Creating a pet resume doesn’t have to be overwhelming and stressful. Simply follow these guidelines for information that you should provide to your potential landlord. You’ll soon be well on your way to renting that fabulous house or apartment for you and your furry (or not so furry) friend in no time. It’s also a good idea to provide your contact information and recommendations from your vet and previous landlords or neighbours. Friends and family can provide great references, too. Just make sure you have something for the landlord to reference in case he or she has additional questions about your pet. Choosing the right words for your dog resume, especially, can make a positive impact on the landlord so that he or she feels more comfortable renting to you. You can consider using a dog resume template or hiring a professional pet resume writing service. If you choose a professional writer, make sure to provide them with all of the information that they need to create a winning resume for your pet. Source: www.articlecity.com

hile most spaces in your home are reserved for everyday routines, your reading corner is meant for relaxation. Summer is the perfect time for reading and turning your favourite books into a signature part of your decor. Find fresh, beautiful ways to display your treasured reads with these home library ideas.
JOY OF SEATING Comfort is the key while you are slipping away to whimsical realities. A reading nook inside your shelving will surely allow you to enjoy your library and reach the books easily. Needless to say, it will surely help you to save space.
STEP BY STEP If you live in a small house, take advantage of the unused space. Go for a small library display by adding shelving under your stairwell.
BOOK ART If you are a fan of the minimalist style but still want to dress up your library a little, try adding some artistic touches to your shelving. For example, you can hang the artwork directly on the shelf making it a part of your book collection.
WATERWORKS If you really think about it, the bathroom is an ideal place for thinking. So it is for reading! Turn your soothing sanctuary into a luxurious library by setting your bookshelves into the bathroom walls. You can also build the shelves into a modern bathtub.
LIKE THE CEILING CAN HOLD THEM Make the most of your space by installing floor-to-ceiling shelving. It’s a great way to make your room look neater and store the items that clutter the space.

CONSIDER RESALE VALUE BEFORE YOU RENOVATE
it for a similarly good price, even if you’ve done a lot of work on it. Many property owners invest in renovations that aren’t in keeping with the neighbourhood. As a result, they end up selling for less than they invested, which can be heartbreaking. Before you renovate, look at what has been selling around you - at what cost for what quality? If the most expensive home in your neighbourhood sold for $400,000 after being completely renovated, it doesn’t make sense to style your house to a value any higher. And really, how special are those $10-persquare-foot tiles anyway? Go with the $5 tiles instead. Focus your investment to one or two elements per room. Make pricey items such as granite countertops, a fancy backsplash, or a higher end faucet; work like showpieces, similar to a piece of art.
SMALLEST MAY BE BEST WHEN IT COMES TO RESALE As for adding a second story to create more space for an expanding family, it may be worth it, in the long run, to hunt for a bigger home. If you invest an extra $100,000 on a twobedroom bungalow in a neighbourhood full of two-bedroom bungalows, you may never recover that full investment. It may be a much better idea to take your equity and find a larger home in a neighbourhood where your investment will hold and even grow in time. By Jennifer Lynn Walker

hen doing renovations, people rarely think about long-term resale value. Most families just want a really nice place to live and they work to create their forever home. However, life can be unpredictable. So while it is joyful to make a dream home, those dreams need to be balanced with an understanding of whether or not those granite countertops or that second story are good investments in the long run.
WHAT IS THE RESALE VALUE? We hear the idea of resale value quite often pertaining to real estate. The idea is to buy a property that is a good investment

and to have its value appreciate. Good maintenance and appropriate renovations help ensure that when it comes time to sell again, the property has gained equity and you’ll make money. However, the amount of money you’ll make depends on market appreciation. Which is why it’s important to make improvements that fit the property and the neighbourhood.
LOCATION THE KEY FACTOR TO CONSIDER If you’ve bought a property by a highway or another not-so-great location, you probably got it for a good price. If that location’s value doesn’t increase during the time you own it, you’ll probably have to sell

When it comes to resale value, it’s always better to have the smallest house in an area with mansions rather than a $600K house surrounded by $300K houses. Of course, creating a joyful home should always be the first priority. Just make wise decisions that will bring you prosperity and happiness for years to come.
