Six years ago when we started taking small steps towards our now, very present, Community Center, I had a single goal—to create the best possible learning environment for our San Francisco School students. Over time, our dreams for this new facility expanded and today as we stand on the precipice of this transformative space, I now have three overarching goals: 1. Create the best possible teaching and learning environment; 2. Build a space that allows us to celebrate our art, music and athletics; 3. Maintain a campus facility that will provide the functional space necessary to educate students for the century ahead. As I write this note, the project timeline is nearly one month ahead of schedule. The goal of graduating the Class of 2013 in the new Community Center is a reality. In the next couple of months, as the finishing touches are completed and we move into the new classrooms, I have two requests:
•
First, I ask that you participate in this effort by contributing to The Community at the Center Campaign. This center is for all of us— students, staff, parents, alumni, alum families, grandparents and our neighbors. We are making this happen together. Many families and friends have generously contributed, pledging more than $4.7 million to fund this project. That means we have only $600,000 to raise in the next couple of months!
•
Second, I encourage everyone to take a moment, when you first enter the new Community Center to step-back and acknowledge how fortunate we are to have this new facility. It is the result of thousands of volunteer hours, incredible philanthropic contributions, and the commitment of both the professional and parent community to realize this moment.
In the pages that follow please note the impressive additions to the campus and the incredible support that is making it a reality. Let’s finish strong and bring this incredible project to a celebratory conclusion.

Embed technology. Every middle school student has an iPad and by utilizing Apple TV, they can project their work on the large screen in the classroom to share their work. This technology also allows teachers to engage a wider-range of learners.
The Gaven Street Gazette is published three times annually by the Development Office of The San Francisco School. We always welcome feedback and story ideas through this email address: cmeade@sfschool.org.
Utilize furniture which allows for flexible configurations and an adaptable learning environment.
Accreditation and Membership The San Francisco School is accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).
Provide classrooms that are roomy, airy and flooded with natural light.

Keeping it Green
Over the past 47 years, the campus has continued to evolve into a 21st Century learning environment.
In concert with the school opening a theater, we are launching an Orff Internship Program with Doug Goodkin, James Harding and Sofia L贸pez-Ibor. More information at www.sfschool.org/orffinternship.
Even with the addition of new community center, with the rooftop courtyard, the school is adding 1740 square feet of outdoor space.

MISSI O N S TAT E M E N T
The San Francisco School cultivates and celebrates the intellectual, imaginative and humanitarian promise of each student in a community that practices mutual respect, embraces diversity and inspires a passion for learning.
OVE R V I E W O F S C HO O L
Founded in 1966, The San Francisco School is a Pre-K through eighth independent, coeducational day school. The school is an established, vibrant educational community with a multicultural enrollment of 270 students, an experienced and dedicated faculty, and supportive and involved parents. The preschool program centers on the ideas of Maria Montessori. The elementary and middle school program reflects the ideals of a progressive, student-centered approach. The school also includes an extended care program, parent education opportunities, and summer recreational activities. Suitably characterized by a parent as “an urban school with a village atmosphere,” the school embraces San Francisco’s ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity. Our progressive approach to education encourages children to develop self-reliance, solid academic skills, integrity, and a sense of social values. The school is respected for our strong academics, our vibrant community, our personal attention to students, and our dynamic arts program. Our students graduate academically prepared, inquisitive, compassionate, and eager for the challenges ahead.
