When she died four years ago at age 82, she even left $5,000 in her will for the ongoing care of her beloved kitties.

"She’s a wonderful lady, and she’d fight for the cats.

She was just amazing," said Wendy White, who joined the cause about six years ago. "And she paid all the vet bills until the city kicked in, which was only about five or six years ago . She’s just an inspiration to me."

White is among 14 members of a group called Scarborough Feral Feeders, which was founded by Montgomery.

The volunteers aim to keep Montgomery’s legacy alive by feeding, monitoring and caring for about 65 homeless cats in central Scarborough.

They also trap cats for city-paid neutering, shots and chipping.

"We now have 14 stations (where) we have colonies of cats that we feed every day," White said.

"Every time we spot a new cat, we get it fixed, so we’re . helping the cats and we’re helping the population issue."

A cat could have 30 kittens a year, White noted.

"We used to have one cat that had three litters of five every year like clockwork. We finally caught her. She was really smart."

Scarborough Feral Feeders is looking for more cat lovers who could volunteer two to three hours per week to deliver food and water to the felines.

"There are thousands of feral cats on the streets, so we’re just touching on the issue," White said.

Euthanasia due to homelessness is the largest cause of death in cats.

Estimates place the number of homeless cats in Toronto at between 20,000 and 100,000.

An average cat has one to eight kittens per litter and two to three litters per year.

During her productive life, one female cat could have more than 100 kittens.

A single pair of cats and their kittens can produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just seven years.

Give your cat a quality scratching post to deter it from scratching furniture. Still scratching? Try putting lemon or orange scent on the area. Cats hate these smells.

Cats are partially colour-blind.

They have the equivalency of human red/green colour blindness.

At birth, kittens can’t see or hear.

Kittens open their eyes after five days and begin to develop their eyesight and hearing at approximately two weeks. They begin to walk at 20 days.

Cats are the sleepiest of all mammals: they spend 16 hours of each day sleeping.

Cats spend 30 per cent of their waking hours grooming themselves.

Thirty-two per cent of homeowners also own at least one cat.

The weirdest cat on record was a female called Mincho who went up a tree in Argentina and didn’t come down again until she died six years later. While treed, she managed to have three litters.

About half the cats are domesticated, abandoned by humans, and they tend to be the ones in rough shape.

"The ones that are feral look OK because they’re used to living in the wild," said White. "(Domesticated cats) don’t know what to do. They’re used to being fed, they’re used to being housed, and they’re freaked, they’re scared to death and they’re hungry."

Volunteers also try to find new homes for some of the domesticated cats they find.

Kittens are in high demand for adoption. "It’s the older cats that have a

tough time," White said.

But not everyone supports the feeding initiative, White admits, noting some accuse them of feeding raccoons.

"We’re feeding the cats.

We feed during the day.

That’s one of our stipulations," White said. "They should be thanking us because people think the raccoons will just go away.

No, they don’t, and if they’re not eating the cat food, they’re in your garbage."

Now open, event centre in Guild Park has booked 200 weddings

and Entertainment, chosen by the City of Toronto in 2014 to run the place, cut away asbestos-filled additions to the original 1914 house, the Bickford Residence, and married it to a new four-section banquet hall and a grand gazebo.

Franchesca Bancheri, Dynamic’s director of special events and community relations, said the first time she stepped into the Bickford, visitors could only enter on planks.

"The floors were rotting.

You couldn’t even walk through the space," she said during a tour last week.

The city shut the old inn in 2001. Much of what people remember about it, particularly Guildwood residents who enjoyed its former restaurant, remains in the restored Bickford: the staircases, wainscotting and fireplaces, though those won’t be working.

"They’ll still see what it used to be," said Bancheri, as workers were finishing

That building, which sat in Guild Park like a rebuke for many years, is reborn.

It’s now part of the Guild Inn Estates, a sleek event centre which staged its first wedding on April 28 and will host 200 more by the end of the year.

Considering even the old inn’s most ardent fans had been close to giving up six years ago, the Heritage Canada Foundation declared the place "in imminent danger of demolition by neglect" - what happened is a small miracle.

A stained-glass window representing the original Guild was transplanted to the new west wing. Paintings by Rosa Clark and other Guild artists - stored by the city in various places should be up in a hallway by next month.

On the Bickford’s east side, a 4,000-square-foot gazebo is ready for outdoor ceremonies, seats 450 and has a built-in sound system.

On June 2, the Guildwood Village Community Association, Friends of Guild Park, Guild Festival Theatre and Guild Renaissance Group host an evening event celebrating the Guild Inn Estate and Canada’s 150th year. Tickets are $35.

A waterfront park is being planned below the bluffs at Guild Park, which also houses the Osterhout log cabin, one of Scarborough’s oldest structures, and another building the city is turning into a public arts centre.

The Inn was rebuilt by a Toronto company called Dynamic Entertainment and Hospitality Group, who will operate an event centre and a banquet hall and restaurant.

It’s time to celebrate our everyday heroes In a world often dominated by depressing headlines, inconsequential information and political movements that drive apart rather than bring people together, it’s refreshing to be able to take pause and celebrate something special.

This year, we’ve got the Urban Hero Awards to look forward to again. And in all honesty, all the staff at Metroland Media Toronto can’t wait.

The program is designed to be accessible to everyone in our city – you, your neighbour, that kid down the street who helps the elderly, teachers, social workers, volunteers – anyone can be an Urban Hero. That’s the beauty of it. It’s an awards program designed to recognized the average people in our communities who do great things, in their own way.

For our readers in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, you’ll remember the awards program from previous years. But this time around, we’re launching with a new look, a slightly new awards process and nominations are open across the entire city. All this, in time for Canada’s 150th celebrations because we thought, what better way to celebrate what it means to be Canadian, by honouring the people that make a difference in the lives of others?

Help us out by considering who you know that makes that difference. We’re looking for nominations in the categories of Arts, Business, Education, Environment, Good Neighbour, Health, Social Issues and Sports. Within each category the awards will recognize the ’Titans of Tomorrow’ (Youth 14-18), and the ’Champions of Today’ (Adults 19+). You can nominate someone today, but only until June 11.

After we receive and confirm all nominations we’ll be launching an online public voting process, which will determine eight ’people’s choice’ Urban Hero winners. Another eight finalists will be selected by our staff, and the whole group celebrated at a reception later this year.

Most recipients are modest about the impact they make, but it’s even more reason to give them the recognition they deserve. They may not be used to the spotlight, but what they do will no doubt serve as inspiration for others.

These awards are a special opportunity to tell some really good news stories and demonstrate the strength of the good will that exists in Canada and here at home in our city.

What if Toronto just gives TCHC away?

Toronto Community Housing Corporation – (TCHC) – will shut 7,500 apartments in five years unless it gets $1.7 billion.

And it probably won’t.

Not from the city, not from Ottawa or Queen’s Park.

Though Mayor John Tory says it’s reasonable, and a "moral imperative," to split that repair backlog three ways, expecting those governments to do it is a bad bet.

At a TCHC highrise in Scarborough Village – newsworthy in 2015, when brick cladding on one side suddenly slid off – Tory sounded like a man convinced he’s doing all he can to fix something before chucking it into the street.

True, the province’s budget is out, without new money for social housing,

City taxpayers can’t pay, Tory argued, since that will mean double-digit increases forcing seniors out of their homes.

"Property taxes were never meant to fund multibillion-dollar capital projects," he said, a bit rich from the guy backing up the Scarborough subway with a dedicated tax.

Tory wants another term, and the issue risks becoming depressing for him. Should he actually secure the funds, other TCHC buildings will require repairs to stay open.

It won’t end.

So, here’s a prediction for a three-way split: one third of TCHC’s 58,000 units will go to charities, one third will become cooperatives, and one third will be torn down.

Tory’s TCHC task force suggested sending 5,000 units to a co-op board called New Home, and 5,000 to nonprofits who already have housing.

He’s sold on the idea.

Big corporations – he used to run one – are "very unwieldy," he said, and breaking them up produces greater local autonomy

and accountability.

Tory suggested Toronto City Council will get recommendations this month on the possible transfers.

If that works, why stop?

But the city owns many old and failing buildings, like the highrise Tory visited last week, which it couldn’t transfer to anyone, except the dubious property managers already running them on TCHC’s behalf.

Eventually, there will be no answer except demolition.

That part sounds like a huge failure for this city, with our shelters full and need ever-growing. But that’s where we’re headed.

Larry Cavero could never have imaged surfing the freezing Great Lakes when he first started surfing at age seven in his home country of Peru. But after moving to Canada and discovering the possibilities, he’s opened a new door to his favourite sport. Whether it’s -20C and hailing or the wind is gusting more than 50 kilometres per hour, you can find Cavero ripping up the surf along the Toronto shoreline.

Cavero is one of the main organizers leading the surfing community in Ontario. He started Surf Dreams Canada, a local surf store which organizes events like beach cleanups and other environmental awareness events.

On top of connecting aspiring surfers with gear and know how, Cavero is always keeping an eye on the weather forecast for rideable waves across Ontario. Surfers use websites specific for determining the size and direction of the waves.

Amid recent news of the Ontario government’s flipflop decision around cutting a $700,000 annual grant to the Toronto Public Library system’s virtual reference library program, a 2011 Twitter post from revered Canadian author Margaret Atwood resurfaced.She posted: "@TorontoLibrary vastly used and highly beloved public institution #literacy".

Thinking back on my elementary school days and countless hours spent in Malvern Public Library, I couldn’t agree more. The library allowed me opportunities to check out books, magazines and even videos by the armload.

Aside from teaching me how to research, the library afforded me early opportunities to learn about the responsibilities of borrowing, returning on time and the realities of paying fines when I didn’t.

Today, libraries are even starting to loan out Wi-Fi hot spots. Libraries are vibrant community hubs, offering many services and programming of value to residents of all ages.

In my adult years, I have had opportunities to contribute to these initiatives,

being invited to speak and deliver workshops at the library on several occasions.

In fact, one of my proudest moments was walking into the Malvern Public Library and seeing my picture on the wall, being recognized for contributions to the community. The reason being - I know in what high regard the residents hold the library in.

At a time when fake news proliferates online and more and more studies point to the detriments of excessive use of phones and other mobile devices, libraries are needed more than ever.

The government needs to invest more into libraries, not less. I’m glad the province recognized that.

All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada.

Deep inside our ears are several thousand microscopic “hair cells.” These cells are arranged in rows and each cell is responsible for hearing a specific pitch, similar to the keys on a piano. As we age, some of these cells become damaged… from loud noises, chronic conditions, or the process of aging itself. Just like a piano with damaged keys, an ear with damaged hair cells will make things sound muffled and distorted.

Scarborough Village residents confront Tory Contractors ’getting rich’ on shoddy repairs, mayor told MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough Village residents are hoping to talk with John Tory about their neighbourhood after crashing the mayor’s news conference at a Toronto Community Housing building last week.

The mayor was in the recreation room of 3171 Eglinton Ave. East on Thursday, asking Queen’s Park and Ottawa to help the city housing authority pay for $1.7 billion in urgent repairs.

Mike McKenzie, former co-chairperson of the Scarborough Village Residents Association, started asking Tory about what he called "shoddy," substandard work done by contractors in the neighbour-

hood’s TCHC buildings.

"Why are they coming into our community, getting rich?"

McKenzie asked.

Joy Robertson, president of Scarborough Residents Unite, also challenged the mayor, saying Tory could also have asked residents to come to his news conference, "instead of it being political."

Robertson said her group tried calling the mayor’s office many times, without success, to talk about issues for Scarborough Village residents.

"We feel as though we’re being used right now as a ploy," she told Tory.

McKenzie said he’s told property managers for 3171 Eglinton about driveway pot holes and missing security measures, such as broken door locks, for years.

But Tory said he’s heard as fast as management fixes doors, people break them again, and cameras are spray-painted

The building has 24 vacant units, all empty since brick cladding suddenly fell from one side of the highrise in 2015, but people enter those units to "engage in prostitution and drug dealing," Tory said.

"It is virtually impossible to keep these people out."

pressed. "It’s not hard to fix a pothole, Mr. Mayor," he said.

The mayor said he’ll return to Scarborough Village and meet residents, "without it being a big media event," and get a report on whether the contractors are giving good value for money.

The city has exhausted money it had for social

housing repairs, Tory told the press, and it needs federal and provincial funds.

"Those who have the greatest ability to raise money have not yet stepped up."

The cladding, damaged balcony railings and the vacant units at 3171 Eglinton are expected to be repaired by October 2018.

Asked to comment on Tory’s visit, Scarborough-

Guildwood MPP Mitzie Hunter said she cares deeply about social housing and residents who live there.

"There is always more work to be done and our government remains committed to supporting social housing across the province and will continue to work with the City of Toronto and our federal partners in the upcoming rollout of a National Housing Strategy," Hunter wrote last week.

A young man, who said the mother of his children lives at 3171 Eglinton, said it must be one of the 10 worst in Toronto. Repairs don’t last long, and response to problems from management is slow, said the man, who didn’t want to give his name.

"They won’t come for two days, and the sink still is plugged," he said.

"To be honest, I think they should rip it down, like how they did with Regent Park."

Zoo workers prepare for possible May 11 strike/lockout DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Five hundred unionized workers at the Toronto Zoo could be on the picket line at 12:01 a.m. May 11, over what union leaders say is an attempt to remove all job security provisions from the contract.

"We’re not going to be accepting those severe cuts," said Christine McKenzie, President of CUPE Local 1600, at Toronto City Hall May 4. "What we’re most concerned about is cuts to our job security. They want to eliminate all of our job security language, which would impact the conservation work that we do."

McKenzie said that zoo management has proposed

provisions which would permit all of the unionized jobs at the zoo to be contracted out. She said that doing so would jeopardize the conservation work that the zoo does, helping protect endangered species in Canada and abroad.

"It would open the floodgates for our zoo to be turned into a second-rate amusement park rather than the scientific facility that it is now," she said.

Toronto Zoo Board Chair Paul Ainslie said that in the event of a strike or a lockout management staff would be put to work looking after animals, which would likely remain the organization’s priority.

"The safety and the security of our animals would be the first thing," he said.

Ainslie said that as a city councillor, he hoped that the two sides could reach "a middle ground," and said that he would support job security in line with Toronto’s unionized workers.

"You’d like to see the same job security provisions as we have for (CUPE locals) 416 and 79 and nothing less than that," he said.

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Edith Montgomery was a pioneering politician who fought just as hard for the Rouge Park as she did to balance the books of the old Municipality of Scarborough.

She died on April 25 at Scarborough General Hospital following an illness. She was 75.

Montgomery was first elected to Scarborough council in 1982, representing communities in northeast Scarborough in the old Ward 14, leaving behind a job working at a hair salon for municipal politics, according to friend and former colleague Gloria Reszler.

Rezler said that Montgomery was known as a hard-working councillor, who through her career joined with former Scarborough mayor Joyce Trimmer and former councillor Ron Moeser to fight to preserve the Rouge Valley against development.

She also chaired Scarborough’s budget committee, and when Trimmer was elected mayor in 1988 served as Trimmer’s deputy mayor.

Hong Fook Mental Health Foundation chair Kam Lo adresses a May 5 media conference regarding the group’s upcoming 35th anniversary gala. Like other groups supporting mental health in Scarborough, Hong Fook doesn’t feel it has the resources it needs.

Seeing more international students, as well as newcomer and immigrant families struggling, Hong Fook - entering its 35th year with three centres and a clinic in Toronto - wants to do more, Wong said.

"There have been a lot of other needs that have gone unmet due to the growing community."

Hong Fook’s foundation, hosting a gala dinner in Markham on June 10, has raised millions, but Dr. Peter Chang, a founder, said the group is still limited to working in five languages.

"If we had the funding to open up an office in York Region, we can do it tomorrow," he added.

Early this year, the province announced an expansion, thanks to $200,000 in donations from the Royal Bank and Echo Foundation, of the "What’s up," walk in clinics for youth.

East Metro Youth Services on Markham Road had offered the no-appointment mental health clinics

for youth since 2011, but now the clinic would operate five days a week there, at Youthlink on Warden Avenue, and at several other Toronto agencies.

Service would now also be offered in Tagalog, Cantonese, Mandarin, Farsi, and Tamil.

The budget announces "up to nine hubs" where youth can find one-stop access to help with mental health and addictions, as well as other services.

One hub is the Markham Road offices of EMYS, which is now the city’s lead agency for youth mental health.

Liberal MPPs at last month’s budget event suggested more mental health support would be announced. "I believe there will be action taken," said Scarborough-Guildwood MPP Mitzie Hunter.

Hayes, however, said she’s disappointed with the budget. "There’s a lot of promises about things to come, and we certainly hope that’s true."

Ontario’s latest budget doesn’t offer much to agencies providing mental health services to youth in Scarborough.

"I feel we’re in crisis now," Youthlink CEO Janice Hayes said last week.

Youthlink hasn’t had a base funding increase from the province since 1995, which means no matter how far it stretches dollars, it must serve fewer youth than it did a decade ago.

"The shortfall is in every program we have. Every other agency is struggling with the same issues," Hayes said. "It’s frustrating, knowing we can help these kids but not having the resources to do it."

The issue came up at a Rotary club-hosted budget event on April 28, when a Youthlink employee asked Scarborough’s five Liberal MPPs about mental health funding.

Hayes said her agency welcomes some budget items, such as free medicine for children and youth 24 and under, but she added pharmacare, by itself, "really isn’t the answer."

The Hong Fook Mental Health Association needs a permanent Scarborough home, and government funding to broaden its services, especially when it comes to meeting needs of youth, says Bonnie Wong, the group’s executive director.

Hong Fook brings cultural expertise to people in Asian communities who are unfamiliar with the health system and facing a stigma surrounding mental illness.

For all residents, identifying such illnesses and intervening early pays off in reduced health care costs later in life.

Terry Fox’s dream has raised more than $700 million to date for cancer research, his foundation reports. Fox dipped his artificial right leg in the water in St. John’s Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. He then ran through the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario averaging an incredible 42 kilometres, nearly a marathon a day.

Then on Sept. 1, 1980 just outside Thunder Bay, Fox was felled with excruciating chest pains. Doctors confirmed the cancer had spread to his lungs. After 5,373 kilometres, Fox’s Marathon of Hope was over. Fox lost his battle with cancer on June 28, 1981. He was 22.

Unsuspecting TTC riders on Queen Street woke up this week aghast to find their beloved 501 streetcar service replaced by lowly buses.

OK, that’s an overstatement. Anecdotally speaking, it’s a rare day when any streetcars are referred to with endearment, much less the 501. When media descended to various sections of Queen to gauge opinions toward the changes - which are for construction and will mean buses operate the length of the line until September - they found no real animosity on display, if anything a sense of relief for some air conditioning.

Ask any Queen, or King, streetcar user about their ride and you’ll likely hear a similar reaction. Trips, particularly in rush hour, are packed, service intermittent. When you finally board, the ancient streetcar lurches at speeds barely faster than an average gait.

We all know the reasons

RAHUL GUPTA TO in Transit for the sorry situation, from long delayed new streetcars to the reality that a railed transit vehicle cannot optimally operate on congested streets already incapable of handling the volume of traffic. So yeah, it’s not surprising there’s hardly a murmur of protest now the streetcars have left Queen.

But let’s be clear: streetcars. however imperfect, remain the backbone of Toronto’s surface transit operations. Buses are accessible, can change lanes to avoid blockage and, yes, are air-conditioned. They still can’t hold a candle to street-

cars.

According to the most recent available TTC data, the 501 is the sixth busiest surface route in the city for daily ridership. Yes, it does trail some bus routes in that regard, on avenues which would be much better served by rapid transit. If you count streetcars, Toronto has the largest light rail network on the continent, and the 501 on its own is bigger than the systems for St. Louis, Sacramento and Pittsburgh. No matter how many buses you run, they cannot compare to the number of riders a streetcar can transport, and the TTC would likely go bankrupt in the process.

So sure, by all means knock the 501, but don’t underestimate the role it plays in moving Toronto, even at a snail’s pace.

Election year budget not looking good Very early in Mayor John Tory’s first term, in 2015, he took out a loan.

Well, the city took out a loan, when he, budget chief Gary Crawford and thencity manager Joe Pennachetti put forward a novel plan to effectively borrow $86 million against the city’s own capital funding for things like road repairs, to fill a hole in the city’s 2015 budget.

The move was understandable at the time - the provincial government had just followed through on a long-promised but badlycommunicated cut to social housing funding - and really, it was a nimble response to a blindside. But it didn’t look good. And Mayor Tory, bristling from criticism, promised across-the-board belt tightening in future years to cover the cost of Toronto’s first budget.

Now, Tory and his colleagues are rolling up their

DAVID NICKLE The City sleeves to get started on the last budget of the term, under Pennachetti’s successor Peter Wallace. Tory’s pledge to cut fat from Toronto’s bureaucracy didn’t bear fruit. And calls from Wallace to choose service cuts or dramatic tax increases went unheard.

In a May 8 report to Toronto’s budget committee, Wallace has indicated that the last budget of the term won’t be an easy one. That loan, as it turns out, is no longer a big problem. But everything else is.

Tory and council have not increased revenue significantly, and they haven’t approved significant service cuts either. The city managed to skate through 2017 with the use of onetime financial fixes and a robustly growing municipal land transfer tax revenue pool. But given provincial measures to cool the Toronto housing market, it’s unlikely that the city will see that increase again. Ridership on the TTC is down from projections, and that means that revenue will be down from that.

Given that, Wallace notes that a residential property tax increase at or below the rate of inflation won’t be enough to offset existing budget pressures and there are no more short term fixes to avoid cuts in front line services.

In other words: just like in 2015, it doesn’t look good.

Toronto’s transportation department found around 8,000 "discontinuities" - elevations of 20 millimetres or more - on Scarborough sidewalks last year.

Staff suggested installing "root deflectors or barriers" around sidewalks, using reinforced or thicker sidewalk slabs next to trees, or planting trees further away.

Karygiannis insisted he’s not crusading to cut trees down, but years ago a "close member of my family" slipped on a frozen puddle created by such a side-

walk heave and broke a leg.

He also wonders how many people tripped and sued the city, claiming negligence, over sidewalk injuries.

Staff don’t know, so the matter will wait, probably until November, for the figures.

Karygiannis said he tried to make this a citywide issue at Toronto council.

"Other councillors laughed at it," he said.

The City of Toronto has rented space in an Ellesmere Road building for an emergency shelter since 1996, and with the property’s owner wishing to sell, the city in January pronounced a suitable deal "unlikely."

Toronto council authorized expropriating the property to keep the shelter for 65 women-led families running, but so far it

hasn’t done that, and negotiations continue, Scarborough Centre Coun. Michael Thompson said last week.

"They’re still trying to work on an arrangement," said Thompson, adding neither people in the shelter nor employees have had to leave.

"They’re not being asked to do anything other than to be patient."

A man faces attempted murder charges after two men were shot outside a Scarborough plaza Friday afternoon.

Toronto police said they were called to 880 Ellesmere Rd. for a shooting at 12:40 p.m. May 5.

"When officers arrived, they located two men with apparent gunshot wounds," police said in a news release.

The event, dubbed May the Police 4th Be With You, was organized by the Toronto District School Board and Toronto police’s 41 and 43 divisions and was held at Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute at 550 Markham Rd. About 400 Grade 4 and 5 students from feeder schools took part in the police-organized activities, which were meant to expose the youth to the type of training officers get in police academy.

Nearly 100 students from Cedarbrae volunteered at the event and mentored the elementary school students.

"Today’s event was amazing," Cedarbrae student Veeththakan Kaveekaran said. "It gives a chance for students and youth to be engaged with the Toronto police, learn more about them, and it also gives them an idea of what the police officers do on a daily basis."

Const. Peter Eckersall of 43 Division said running the "mock police academy" could get the students interested in policing. "They can interact on a personal level with all the officers.

They can see all the different units that we have," he said. "We’re hoping to expand this and make it next year even better."

Defensive tactics instructors from the police college showcased how a police baton is used.

Children also took part in shuttle runs, obstacle courses and other physical fitness activities that are part of police training.

Chief Mark Saunders said children get to feel "what it’s like to be in law enforcement" for a day.

"It’s an opportunity for them to develop relationships with police officers," he said. "The police officers make themselves

available. They’ll help them go through the obstacle course; they’ll have conversations with them. .

The most important thing is developing strong relationships with our communities from all segments."

Cedarbrae Collegiate vice-principal Jason Monteith said the event also serves to relieve any anxiety elementary school students may have about high school life.
