It’s a warm Monday afternoon, and cars slowly circle the parking lot at Bluffers Park Beach. The lot’s full, but at least there are spots in two other parking lots a short hike away. On weekends, those areas are known to fill up too, and so many drivers head to the beach a police cruiser often blocks the road during afternoons. "I live in Scarborough, and I can’t get to the beach after 10 a.m.," Scarborough Centre Coun. Glenn De Baeremaeker told the Toronto and Region Conservation board last month. Will O’Neill’s Little Red Lie dramatizes millennial fears MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Little Red Lie, a video game set mainly in Scarborough, talks a lot, lets you do very little, wears you down and finally breaks your heart. There are no zombies to shoot in Will O’Neill’s story dramatizing millennial fears about personal debt, failure and the world becoming increasingly brutal and unfair. O’Neill, who grew up in Scarborough, stages much of the action in what he calls "Toronto’s most notorious, misunderstood and fiercely proud suburb." Not that this matters, except to people who know the former borough well enough to recognize Kennedy Station or other current or former landmarks of Scarborough that O’Neill, 36, slyly incorporates. An important family photo has the Cedarbrae Theatre, now gone, as its backdrop. One character crashes his car into the front of what looks exactly like Caddy’s strip club. The protagonists of Little Red Lie (from WZO Games Inc.) are Sarah Stone, unemployed and desperate, and Arthur Fox, a rich motivational speaker O’Neill says started out with elements of the late Toronto mayor Rob Ford, but "a lot of Donald Trump started to bleed in." Unlike action-oriented

Set mainly in Scarborough, the video game lets players experience life as Stone, unemployed and desperate, and as Arthur Fox, manipulative and rich. games in which characters use the "classic nine verbs" - attack or defend, pick objects up - O’Neill’s can do nothing but talk incisively to themselves and lie. Text which constitutes a lie appears in red, and sometimes the lies are funny. Lying isn’t necessarily bad, since honesty can help or hurt us, O’Neill says. Here’s a spoiler O’Neill doesn’t mind you seeing: Stone and her whole boxed-in Scarborough family are doomed. Fox, who spouts such lines as "Love without money is a lie," does evil and escapes punishment.
along." The limited choices reflect a loss of the control people expect in games. Little Red Lie contains a novel-length 80,000 words, and much of it, O’Neill says, reflects tension between baby boomers and millennials, "raised to believe we could pursue our passions, and do what we want." For millennials, apparently, there’s no going back to the calm, comfortable state of their child-
Stone suffers like Job, and ends up obliterated. Her end, O’Neill admits, is "wrong and unreasonable." Is all this a downer? Well, yes, admits O’Neill, whose first game, Actual Sunlight, "was about suicidal depression." Still, though mainstream games are "regressing to evermore childlike tropes," there are people into artistic games - a tiny niche market, com-
pared to the latest Resident Evil release - who love this stuff intensely. O’Neill, who by day is a copy writer and creative director for corporate events, says he believes in what he’s doing. "I’m pushing a boulder up a hill," he explains. Already, O’Neill is planning two other games to be set in Scarborough. One, he says, is about living with chronic pain. Older Tamil-Canadians recall cars, says West Hill collector MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Two of Sri Ramalingam’s most precious possessions, a "brother and sister", are in a metal shed behind his West Hill home. They are both Austin A40 Somersets, but like all collectors, Ramalingam has his favourite - the lavender one built in 1955. "This car, I’m never going to sell. If I die, I’m going to give it to my daughters," he said this week. "I just look at this car, [and] I’m happy." Scarborough sees plenty of car love. Stretches of its roads are devoted to fixing cars, or reselling them. The annual Wheels on the
Danforth festival this weekend will show off scores of classic cars and "tuners". Ramalingam’s love is for the British car makes of decades ago, ones which drove on the streets of Sri Lanka before that island’s devastating civil war. Sri Lanka had been a British colony, Ceylon, and even after independence in 1948, many of Sri Lanka’s taxis and passenger cars were, like the Somerset, from Britain. That’s why Ramalingam, 52, will bring the Somerset and other cars from that era to this year’s Tamil Fest on Markham Road from Aug. 26 to 27 (see www.tamilfest.ca) - so people can remember "back home". "Right away, they’ll know what this is," said Ramalingam, who owns a Danforth Road limousine service and body shop. His parents in Jaffna had a A40 Somerset from

ABOUT US
Be a tourist in your own backyard At 150, it’s safe to say that Canada has aged pretty well. It’s also safe to assume that most Canadians have a fairly decent grasp of their country; its diverse regions and cultures, and the landmarks and destinations that have become synonymous with travelling across our land. The majestic Rockies. The vast prairies. Thundering Niagara Falls. Historic Quebec City. Peggy’s Cove. You know them, but have you visited? Canadians like to travel, flocking to New York City, or Florida, or heading overseas to explore Paris or Rome. All worthy destinations. But is 2017 the year to explore a little closer to home? Many in the tourism industry certainly think so. Last fall, Lonely Planet chose Canada as its ’destination of the year’ for 2017. Earlier this year, the New York Times ranked Canada as its top travel destination. The reasons are many: a favourable exchange rate; safety concerns in major destinations in Europe; an endless variety of attractions that coincide with our year-long sesquicentennial celebration. Fun and cultural awareness aside, tourism is big business. Nearly 20 million international visitors came in 2016, with the majority, 13.9 million, coming from the U.S. To keep those intrepid travellers happy, fed and informed requires hundreds of thousands of jobs in the tourism sector, accounting for roughly 11 per cent of the total labour force. Generating $90 billion in total economic activity, tourism is good business as well as nation-building. So by all means hop on a plane or train and see the sights. But remember, some of the best-kept secrets are right around the corner. It’s often true that citizens of a particular city or area, having lived there for years, have never taken the time to actually be a tourist in their town. The CN Tower, Fort York, Kensington Market, all draw foreign visitors but may remain a mystery to folks literally around the corner. Don’t know what’s out there to see? Start with a visit to your local tourism office. There are a myriad of treasures in and around Toronto. Or check out one of the dozens of festivals or attractions in the city. From the CNE to Buskerfest to TIFF, thousands attend these events each year, but you wouldn’t have to look very hard to find a friend or neighbour who has never attended any of them. On a tight budget? Hop on a bike and see things you typically miss in a car. Find a free movie night at a local park. Head to your local library for free programs and events. Be a tourist in your own backyard. You’ll be happy you did.

A vibrant culture may be victim of city’s success One of the advantages of being a few steps behind the curve is that you get a warning before the precipitous drop. So it is, and often has been, with Toronto when held against other major world cities. For example, as our underfunded transit system teeters, New York City’s bigger and older one is in collapse. Watching that sort of thing go on elsewhere gives us urgency here. With that in mind, it might be wise to peer over the horizon and across the pond at another city on a different kind of brink: London. The U.K. capital is way ahead of Toronto on a different trajectory than public transit: raw wealth. Toronto’s until-just-now booming real estate market is nothing
DAVID NICKLE The City compared to the explosion in cost and wealth that’s happened in London. Housing has been priced out of any reasonable family budget, and that has led to an exodus. As reported in The Guardian earlier this month, people are leaving the city to the tune of 80,000 annually: both homeowners and renters. And, it’s not just people. with that - because, as old common areas are redeveloped, so go the activities that might have taken place there. Culturally, the city is becoming sterile. It seems as though Toronto is on the same trajectory. Live music venues have been shuttering like a row of dominoes this year, as redevelopment pushed out some and untenable rent hikes pushed out others. And it’s not just concert venues. Dramatic shifts in property values are forcing softer cultural spots, like the venerable Eliot’s Bookstore on Yonge Street, to close down. It’s a side-effect of prosperity: a rising real estate tide raises all boats, and property taxes too. The House of Lords hair
salon, just a few doors down, is closing under similar pressures. Those places join Sam the Record Man, A & A Records and Tapes, HMV, and The World’s Biggest Bookstore among the chorus of destinations that at one point drew if not the world, then much of the country, to Toronto. It begs the question: how long can Toronto stay a cultural centre, with the culture gone from its centre? Canada 150 is a time for celebration
BACK TO SCHOOL
FUN
CRAFTS – POPSICLE PICTURE FRAMES AND PONY BEAD NECKLACES
To the editor: Re: ’Canada 150: time to soul search’, Millennial Mind, June 22. While this is a land of free speech, writing a newspaper article requires much thought and research for the writer not to be deemed naive or facetious. This is important in trying times when inaccurate information, quickly accepted by some, helps to increase building tension. How worrisome to think you represent the "Millennial Mind," dismissing the plight of Indigenous peoples in a mere sentence, while ubiquitous gripes about others prevail. I suggest you reread your next sentence about "racialized people ... renders them erased." Erased? The same issue of the Mirror shows a diversity of participants in Canada Day celebrations. There’s Buffy Sainte-Marie at Nathan Phillips Square and later Cuban-Canadian Jazz Collective; a Multicultural Day
at Yonge and Dundas Square; in Scarborough, salsa dancing as well as 1,000 Tamil dancers doing Bharatanatyam. Also, it’s understandable if First Nations people don’t celebrate. They are the ones who have talked and been listened to but are still aggrieved. Perhaps you could influence other millennials to add your collective effort in support of their cause. The current situation in Churchill, Man., is a good springboard. Amid the breakdown of communities and social order, there are those who rise above it, acting instead of more talking, who are positive and constructive rather than negative and divisive. That’s where journalists are able to influence readers, presenting facts and encouraging analysis. Yet we should not ignore the delicate line our leaders must walk - supporting multiculturalism (with some groups fighting for dominance in
the name the Canadian Charter), while still honouring the Founding Fathers and their progeny. The history of settlement in Canada should not be ignored. Some descendants of the first settlers will commemorate and celebrate while some immigrants will celebrate just being Canadian. I hope that we could all look at the bigger picture, embrace the occasion wholeheartedly and deal with our discontent at an appropriate time. After all, do many groups not overlook the vices in their motherland and celebrate its birth or independence here? N. Singh

The rags to riches story of eyewear giant Karim Hakimi ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Karim Hakimi’s hard childhood in Iran was the "key" to his success as a business tycoon in Canada. When Hakimi was five, his father died. And a few years later, at age nine or 10, Hakimi found work, first as a blacksmith and then grinding magnifying glass from old windowpanes to make eyeglasses where he also learned about different aspects of the eyewear business. He would work from sunrise to sunset. "The worst time was the summer because the sun never went down," Hakimi said in an interview. "I was so skinny you can play guitar on my ribs. That’s why for the rest of my life I love food." How did he feel about working to support his family at such a young age? "Hardship is just normal. You get used to it," he said. "That was probably the key to forge me into a harder person." Hakimi’s work in his youth got him fascinated with how lenses magnify and minify to help people see well. "I realized it’s a science . the science of optics," he said. Hakimi also convinced his boss to let him take eyeglasses and sell them on his day off. And he would sell the glasses near mosques. "I often managed to make people buy two pairs or three pairs by telling them, ’Tomorrow I’m not here. This is your only chance,’" said Hakimi, adding he ended up earning more money on that one day than the other six days of the week combined. At age 14, Hakimi enrolled in night school to learn to read and write. "I realized that I don’t know my own alphabet, my own language." Hakimi said he always had a love for water and the ocean so, at age 19, he joined the Iranian Navy.
Staff/Metroland
Hakim Optical founder Karim Hakimi displays displays a glasses frame in his personal office showroom on Wednesday, March 29. "They put me in a battleship," he said. "Then I became a diver." Since he spoke some English, he was also assigned to host American guests. When Hakimi finished his navy service, he received a passport, allowing him to move to Germany, then Switzerland where he continued working in factories making lenses. Hakimi said he eventually realized that he didn’t want to be a factory worker his whole life. "I wanted to own the factory. In Europe it’s impossible . so I wrote a letter (asking) to immigrate to United States, to Canada, to Australia," he said. The Canadian embassy was the first to reply and
asked Hakimi if he wanted to move to Toronto. "I said, ’What’s that?’ . I never heard of Toronto," Hakimi recalled. Hakimi worked in factories in Toronto for six months before opening his own wholesale optical business in 1967. He rented space in the former Elmwood Hotel on Elm Street downtown where he posted a handwritten sign on a piece of plywood that read "Hakim Optical," dropping the last "i" in his surname. "I started as a one-man show," he said. "I went to the stores and told them, ’Give me your prescription glasses and I will make it,’ and with the emery powder and with simple machinery, primitive
machinery, I started grinding lenses and polishing lenses." Hakimi was paid $3.50 for a pair of lenses, making a 50 cent profit. But the retail outlets would sell the glasses for $50 or more. Hakimi slowly also joined the retail market. "The retail kept growing," he said. "I had first 20 people a day, becoming 30 people a day, and then I hired an optometrist, and then the optometrist couldn’t handle the load." Hakimi would sell a pair of glasses for $8 and bifocals for $12, which was far lower than his competitors. He soon bought new machinery, as well as the building he was renting.
He then kept buying buildings. He made his first million dollars by the early 1970s, though he says it’s not the money that drives him. "It’s the enjoyment that I worked for, and the money came by itself," he said. Hakimi, now 84, lives in North Toronto and still works 10 hours a day with no plans to retire. "The experience that I have through life is an asset. I want to put it to good use. If I retire, all the assets, all the knowledge, all the know-how is going to go to waste," he said, adding "I don’t want to waste my time sitting somewhere doing nothing." There are now 161 Hakim Optical outlets across
the country, with more than 600 employees and 40 million pairs of eyeglasses sold to date. And in 2014, the city honoured the philanthropist by renaming a Scarborough street to Hakimi Avenue. What advice does Hakimi have for young entrepreneurs? "Don’t pay attention to the obstacles," he said. "Go ahead, spearhead it, and fight the obstacles, go around it, and reach the goal." Start your day by exploring an unsolved mystery, meeting interesting people in our communities and reading new nonfiction or fiction by Canadian authors. Join us every Sunday for your Sunday Reads.

Support pours in for east Toronto boys who recently lost both parents JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to help an east-Toronto family struck by tragedy twice this year.On Monday, May 8, Joe Parum, a 44-year-old father of two young sons, died suddenly and unexpectedly from a massive heart attack at his home in southwest Scarborough. At the time of Parum’s death, his partner Courtney Sayliss had just started another round of chemotherapy in her lengthy battle with breast cancer, which came back last fall.Sadly, just over a month later, on Saturday, June 24, Sayliss died, leaving behind the couple’s young sons, Joey, 7, and three-year-old Jonny. She was 35.The boys are now in the care of their maternal grandmother, Sharron. In the days following Parum’s passing, Sayliss’ longtime best friend, Irie Selkirk, set up a gofundme
page to help her close friend and her young sons have some financial security. The goal is to raise $50,000 or roughly a year’s pay. The Angels for Joey and Jonny page, which can be found online at https:// www.gofundme.com/ courtneysboys, has now evolved into a fundraiser to help the boys and their grandmother. All funds collected will be used to pay for therapy, summer camp, necessities, and a trust fund for Joey and Jonny. As of Tuesday, $37, 396 had been raised. "We come from a very tight knit community. We all grew up together," Selkirk shared during a recent interview."It’s really important for us to maintain our close family members and ensure they’re supported." Selkirk, who described her close friend as a very likable, funny, cheeky, and clever person, said they were both part of a large

circle of "chosen sisters" who always looked out for each other.Since Parum and Sayliss’ deaths, scores of friends and loved ones have come forward to help with financial donations, while others, especially positive male role models, are spending time with Jo-
ey and Jonny. Many strangers have also given money and other gifts to help the family, which has close connection to the Beach."They’ve got a hard road ahead so anything we can do to lighten that burden. They need our support," Selkirk said."We
want to see them excel and do the best they can, because that’s what Courtney wants. We have to step up and make sure they have the opportunities their parents would have given them."Close family friend Mikki Mikkelstrup said Sayliss was surround-
ed by love and optimism throughout her cancer journey as well as the loss of her partner."There was a community that believed in hope. Courtney was such a fighter," Mikkelstrup told Metroland Media Toronto."Courtney and Sharron have always had a family of friends and more than ever we’re trying to band together to support them. There’s a lot of love and support."She said there’s no "Band-Aid solution" to help the boys and their grandmother get through this unimaginable tragedy, but many want to do what they can to help.So far, Breakwall BBQ and Smokehouse at Queen Street East, near Woodbine Avenue, has held one fundraiser for the family.Down the line, Selkirk said she’s also planning on organizing an annual fundraiser for the boys. Clever ways to boost your home’s curb appeal When selling your home, nothing looks quite as good as a well-manicured front garden or beautifully decorated balcony. While many homeowners focus on the interiors of their homes, a property’s exterior can make all the difference, adding to its appeal and boosting its resale value. A home’s exterior plays an important role in shaping a prospective purchasers’ decisions. As the first point of contact, these areas often help set the tone and encourage buyers to positively visualize themselves owning the home. An attractive exterior doesn’t have to break the bank. There are a number of ways you can create a stunning outside environment without much effort or money. Here are just a few tips to carry you through the selling season: Clear the clutter. One of the easiest ways to make any outdoor space come to life is to keep it clean and tidy. This lets buyers visualize how
they will make the space their own when it trades hands. Easy container gardens. Planted containers can add a charming look and feel to entranceways and balconies. When picking pots, look for similar styles that vary in size for a nuanced appeal. Drought-tolerant plants. Flowerbeds and plants are often a great way to add a splash of colour to any exterior. For maximum effect, choose an assortment of perennials and annuals that require less water and are able to withstand hot summer days. Don’t forget to fertilize. Though sunlight and water are usually enough, periodically feeding your plants essential nutrients will promote lavish growth and ensure consistent flowering.

Waterfront project proposes to expand the beach l Continued from front
the park and beach at the south end of Brimley Road have risen dramatically. In May, councillors renamed Scarborough Bluffs Park, on the heights above Bluffers, because people confused it with the shoreline park below. Some visitors, City of Toronto staff reported, became so frustrated, they attempted a dangerous climb down to the beach. There’s no TTC service down the steep, narrow stretch of Brimley into the park. Eroded shoulders make it dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians. "It’s a very unsafe road," Gary Crawford, the local councillor, said this month. The Scarborough Waterfront Project proposes to expand the beach and connect it to East Point Park 11 kilometres to the east. If built, the $170-million project is expected to bring more people to the area. The Bluffers parking
lots, where certain spaces are reserved in summer for cars with boat trailers, are already a top spot for ticketing in the city. At the board meeting, De Baeremaeker said the authority should ask the City of Toronto to increase parking at Bluffers, "including creating two or three storey parking structures within the footprint of the existing 200-stall parking lots." The councillor also suggested the city address another summer visitor complaint by "significantly increas(ing) the supply of washroom facilities at Bluffers Park," as well as at other points along the future trail. Crawford said De Baeremaeker’s pitch for parking structures "sounds interesting," but stopped short of backing it. The park’s being used a lot more, said Crawford, because the city is growing, development is moving into the area, people have dis-

City staff, Crawford said, are trying to arrange a weekend shuttle service to Bluffers from the R.H. King Academy on Kingston, which he said is close enough to serve as an overflow lot. Crawford also said the
city and the conservation authority have assigned more people to clean washrooms and pick up trash at Bluffers. Meanwhile, the TTC’s board in January requested a staff report on extending service to the park. In
the past, Crawford said, the transit authority maintained the road to Bluffers so steep it has escape lanes for trucks with failing brakes - was too much for its buses. The report is expected this fall.

Wheels on the Danforth returns this weekend Wheels on the Danforth is back where Danforth Avenue meets Danforth Road, and it’s not just about cars. Yes, classics, tuners, motorcycles and more will be displayed and judged on the Danforth this Saturday, Aug. 19, but Wheels also includes the Toronto East Bike Festival, with two group rides. Its free entertainment has expanded to fill three stages, and add roving buskers. The eighth annual festival kicks off Friday, Aug. 18 with a 6:30 p.m. screening of Ghostbusters in Oakridge Park, complete with a Stay Puft Marshmellow Man. "We have a whole year to think up cool things to see and do," says coordinator Colleen McCourt. There’s a Kids Zone with a Zorb track - think giant hamster ball - at Byng Ave-

The voluntary merger of three Toronto hospitals is now official. As of Aug. 1, the Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care has approved the plan which officially unites Providence Healthcare in Scarborough, and St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital, both downtown, under one corporate entity. "This is an important and exciting milestone for each of our organizations and the people we care for as we work toward our vision of advancing the health of our patients and our urban communities," said Tom Woods, chair of the inaugural board of directors of the new health network, in a press release. The merger was proposed last year by the leaders of the three organizations, who submitted a proposal to integrate. The goal is to provide better and

Wheels on the Danforth will be celebrating its 8th year with fun for the whole family this weekend. The event, run by the Crossroads on the Danforth BIA, is free for everyone. The festivities begin on Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Stop by for a showing of the classic Ghostbusters in Oakridge Park at 8:30 p.m. The movie is sponsored by Councillor Michelle Holland-Berardinetti and Local 416. On Aug. 19, families are welcome to check out two car shows, live music, street performers, food vendors, shops and more. Children can head to the Free Kids’ Zone to have their faces painted or jump in a bouncy castle. There will also be a car available for kids to paint. The car shows that give the event its name will feature classics, exotics, tuners, muscle cars, hot rods and motorcycles, which will be judged by professionals. The winning vehicles’ owners will receive trophies and prizes. This year, Wheels on the Danforth will have three stages for families to enjoy a wide range of musical acts and performers, including Steven’s Garage, Greystone, The Two Fours and The Dukes. Buskers will perform on the street and EDM DJs will entertain show-goers into the night.
Denturists are professionals qualified to make and fit complete dentures and partial dentures and implant supported dentures. They also provide anti-snoring/sleep apnea appliances teeth whitening and mouth guards. Dentures are precise custom appliances (prosthetics) that replace one or more missing teeth, made to fit each patient’s mouth and situation. Typically dentures last between five to ten years. Annual check-ups with your denturist will help determine any changes in your mouth and how they affect the fit of the dentures. Wearing loose dentures can cause sores as they move and rub against the gums. A loose denture can lead to pain, infections, headaches, and a bad mental and emotional disposition. General gum changes are natural due to aging or changes in health. Remedies for these changes will include adjustments, relines, rebases or replacement of the dentures. Quality of life is directly related to the denture wearer’s ability to eat, digest and make good food choices. This is all within the denture wearer’s control. Allowing the denture professional to help will provide comfort and confidence to the denture wearer. Please stay tuned for the upcoming articles. Scarborough Village Community Garden a hidden gem Garden co-ordinator invites more residents to get involved Tucked away in Fred Johnson Park (at 3630 Kingston Rd.) is the beautiful Scarborough Village Community Garden. Originally a piece of parkland, it was transformed through the Project Orange Thumb grant program in 2009. Since then, the Scarborough Village Community Garden has been run by a team of dedicated volunteers. Besides being a place where local residents can grow fresh vegetables, berries and herbs for themselves and the community, the garden creates new social networks. "It’s a great place where people of diverse backgrounds can grow
food together, and have fun learning about different vegetables and new ways of preparing them," says John Doleweerd, garden co-ordinator. This ninth season, thanks to the mixture of heavy rainstorms and blazing heat, most plants have grown well, which unfortunately includes weeds. "Since our garden volunteers have been so busy battling weeds, some of the garden’s plots have only recently been planted, so the harvest of beets, turnips and Swiss chard, among others, will be late this year," said Doleweerd. "Every season brings new surprises to the garden, which is one reason I enjoy it so much," he added. "After doing their share of work, our volunteers have been bringing home a share of crunchy kale, Jamaican callaloo, as well as juicy cucumbers, which have grown really well this summer."
