A new photo exhibit at the Toronto Archives is examining life in the city’s post-war suburbs, transporting visitors back to a transformational time in Toronto’s history when developers began sowing the seeds of complete communities on what was once farmland in North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough.

"After the Second World War, Toronto had an incredible housing shortage.

People were literally living in garages, multiple families were living communally. Then along came the suburbs, giving people the opportunity to own - and in some cases, build - their own homes," said Archivist Manda Vranic, curator of the Wide Open World: A Celebration of the Suburbs in Toronto exhibit.

Featuring 133 photos from the late 1940s through to the 1980s, Vranic’s exhibit documents an era when Canada’s national ideal of "the good life" was transplanted from urban city centres to these newly developed suburban oases originally built for returning war veterans.

In choosing to delve into the human side of suburbia rather than its built form, Vranic said the Wide Open World exhibit - which will remain open to the public at the Toronto Archives until August 2018 - also challenges the "little boxes" critique of suburban living.

"There’s been a lot of writing about the suburbs

and a lot of it is critical of the infrastructure and there’s a lot of talk about conformity and car dependence and so on, but when you look at these pictures what you see is people having fun, building community and interacting with each other," Vranic said.

"I really wanted to show the good side of the suburbs and how, in some ways, the promise of the suburbs has been fulfilled."

Chosen from amongst hundreds of thousands of Toronto Archives photos taken by official city photographers, freelancers and amateurs, Vranic narrowed down some of her personal favourites among the 133 Wide Open World photo selections.

Amongst the noteworthy Scarborough images in the Wide Open World exhibit, Vranic highlighted a photo taken by photographer John H. Boyd on July 21, 1951 to accompany a Globe and Mail article about couples building their own homes.

In it, Polish-born war veteran Roman Sedzicki, who spent six years as a prisoner of war in Germany, and his fiancee, Helen Muchowski, are pictured getting their hands dirty while constructing their future home at 2 Drake Cres.

"What I like about this photo is, when people talk about the suburbs after the war, they talk about that return to domesticity and how women were encouraged to go back to being homemakers after the war," she said. "And here is Helen, who worked in an art gallery, literally making her home while wearing bowed sandals as she shovels concrete - and I love that so much."

In North York, it was a series of hockey photos from the 1960s and ’70s that caught Vranic’s eye - from

a 1962 picture of dozens of youth enjoying the outdoor hockey rink at Goulding Park, to a 1969 image of half

a dozen youngsters crowded onto the double-wide driveway at 142 Faywood Blvd. for a pick-up game, to

a photo of road-hockey enthusiasts braving the slush outside a North York housing complex in 1972.

"While we don’t know all that much about each individual photo, together they represent three different forms of Canada’s favourite pastime," she said.

In Etobicoke, the standout image for Vranic was a photo of two little girls taken in Queensway Park looking north to Uno Drive in 1959.

"One of the interesting things about it is, all of these homes still exist.

They were built in the 1940s during the war for returning veterans, so they’re very early, wartime suburbs. It’s a unique style of architecture and you can see the neighbourhood was planned around this big park, so that the moms could bring their kids out to play," she said.

"When I found this photo, it was on a 35mm slide and it only showed one little girl. When we took the slide cover off to scan it, low and behold, we discovered the second girl looking into camera. It was like a little Easter egg, which is just delightful."

So far, Vranic said people are having "a very personal connection" to the Wide Open World exhibit especially those who grew up in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough.

"No place is perfect, but the suburbs were definitely a good place to grow up and that’s what we’re trying to showcase."

The Wide Open World exhibit is open at the Toronto Archives, 255 Spadina Rd., Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Not only were they able to donate money but they had teams made up of store employees running the course. They also provided water and bananas to all the competitors. Truly frightening is the amount of time and cash Rotten Ronnie’s host has spent on scenes of terror, and the number of moving, animatronic figures he has in store.

One, a towering pumpkin-headed creature on wheels, was designed to chase children around the street.

"He makes a bunch of different noises," McGrath said excitedly, beside a front yard crammed with skeletons and a porch with a singing pumpkin trio.

"The talking tree’s pretty cool too."

Pass the threshold of "Cliff Side Hospital" and you’ll find yourself in an asylum, face to skull with an interactive puppet McGrath calls Dora. "The kids love her," he says.

The asylum is as far as toddlers get. Visitors with

kin creature and others.

"It’s pretty amazing what he’s done over there," Hopkins said this week, recalling McGrath came over to buy a prop and they’ve been friends ever since.

"He does it because he loves it. The fact that it’s for charity makes it so much better."

The haunt contains warnings visitors are wise to heed. "To avoid the zombies’ wrath please donate your cash," says one sign in a graveyard.

Despite the haunt’s goriness, McGrath’s "not much into gore." He loves the classics - Frankenstein, the Wolfman. He’s more of a Lon Chaney or Vincent Price guy.

Where does he put this stuff the rest of the year?

"Everywhere," he says. "I add to it every year, so it gets worse every year."

The haunt opens after dark on Saturday, Oct. 28, Sunday, Oct. 29 and on Halloween at 121 Sandown Ave.

We see him executed, we step into his butcher shop "You can tell he wasn’t your average butcher," says McGrath - and into "hell’s prison" where many scary Halloween characters are behind bars.

McGrath knows part of a great haunt is in the details antique tins, an old doctor’s bag, and dozens of other spooky touches you may not notice the first time.

He has 10 volunteer actors in green "morph suits," butchers, zombies and a "crazy clown guy," who can jump out of hidden spots.

Bloor bike lanes a roadmap for cycling infrastructure What’s the problem between bikes and cars?

For years, all we seem to have been able to do is guess, and those guesses have been informed largely by where we’re sitting: on the saddle of a mountain bike, or in the seat of an automobile.

If the former, we guess the problem is the proximity to cars and the inattention of their operators; the lack of space and infrastructure on city streets to limit that proximity and maintain safety. If we’re in a car, we see cyclists as contributing to congestion, darting through traffic - trying to claim precious road space for no good reason.

Last week, Toronto Transportation staff took a lot of the guesswork out of the equation, releasing an extensive report on the year-long pilot project on the Bloor Street bike lane project. The lanes, which run 2.4 kilometres from Shaw Street to Avenue Road, were subject to intense scrutiny over that time, with some key questions posed: did they in fact increase the number of cyclists? Did they unduly impact other traffic? Did the loss of the parking that was displaced by the bike lanes harm local businesses? Did they improve safety?

Now we have some answers. The bike lanes have led to an increase in cyclists: Bloor is now the second-most popular cycling route in Toronto.

The lanes have slowed car traffic through the neighbourhood. But local businesses didn’t suffer; indeed, businesses saw a small increase in customers with the bike lanes, and the city has plans to improve movement through other adjustments.

And perhaps most importantly, things got a lot safer: there was a reduction of 44 per cent in car/bicycle interactions with the introduction of fully separated bike lanes.

Toronto council will be using that report to decide in November whether to make the bike lanes permanent, but it’s a good bet that they will follow staff recommendations and do so, as Mayor John Tory has already signalled he’ll support the permanent lanes.

The question then will become, what to do with the example of Bloor Street? The narrow, busy stretch of roadway represents one of the larger challenges when it comes to placing cycling infrastructure. If bike lanes were, as their critics have alleged, going to fail, then surely they would have failed spectacularly on Bloor.

The success of those bike lanes should spur council to support even more of them: along Bloor, along Danforth, and even beyond the downtown in Scarborough and Etobicoke and North York. Because we now know: if there is a problem between bicycles and cars, bike lanes are a great solution.

Kenneth Hale of the Advocacy Centre for Tenants believes some of these local politicians are exploiting fear. Rooming houses are something they can take a ferocious stand on, he says.

But while rallying their anxious homeowners, they aren’t offering up other solutions for affordable housing in neighborhoods where it’s badly needed, or suggesting where thousands of students enrolled at the city’s

fastest-growing post-secondary institutions can live nearby.

If it’s clear suburban rooming houses are stuck in a "consultation loop," says Hale, ACTO will push to have a Ontario Municipal Board hearing, arguing outlawing rooming houses in North York, Scarborough or Etobicoke infringes on Ontario’s Human Rights Code and Canada’s Charter.

The OMB can end up writing a rooming house bylaw for the whole city, Hale says, and chances are nobody’s going to like it.

Risk of problem gambling increasing, agency warns ’Gambling is never about gambling’: psychotherapist MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Motor coaches to the casino are in the mall parking lot every day, often every hour. Online poker is a few clicks away.

And close to home, illegal gambling houses grow in number, ruining lives.

Gambling for Toronto’s Chinese community "is no longer the game of mah jong every Chinese New Year day with family around the table," says the Scarborough-based Chinese Family Services of Ontario.

Last month, the agency says services connecting the city’s Chinese community to gambling "have been normalized and made much more accessible," leading to "great risks" of problem gambling behaviour.

This includes free casino shuttles, leaving from spots in Scarborough and North York, the CFSO says, who hire Chinese-speaking guides and are a convenience "unique to the Chinese community."

As with drugs, easy access to gambling is a big reason people get hooked, Mary Fong, a registered psychotherapist, social worker and gambling counsellor, said in an interview.

"The risk factor is increasing like crazy," added Fong, who since 1998 has seen individuals, couples or families dealing with problem gambling at CFSO. For a few years, recalled Fong, not many problem gamblers came voluntarily, and agency staff worked mainly with families while doing community outreach, attacking the stigma against seeking help, or "washing dirty linen in public," and debunking myths about counselling.

- Mary Fong, Psychotherapist selves, though the agency still considers the percentage seeking help to be too low.

Fong believes there are reasons people gamble, and that gambling, for some, becomes a convenient way to feed needs that can’t be met otherwise.

"Gambling is never about gambling," she said.

But no one is born a problem gambler, and Fong helps clients recognize the causes and course of their addiction. Once the gambling behaviour is under control, she can help them look at underlying issues.

People in Ontario can voluntarily "self-exclude" themselves from casinos -

something which can now be done without going to one - for six months up to a lifetime.

A voluntary lifetime ban, however, can be cancelled after six months, and to Anna Victoria Wong, CFSO’s executive director, it’s "acute care" instead of early prevention.

And people who self-exclude - a step often taken because family members insist - can find their way to underground gambling houses which are illegal and dangerous to be around.

These operations have multiplied in the past few years, especially in North Scarborough, said Toronto Police Staff Sgt. Andrew

Ecklund of 42 Division.

"We know they are being run by organized crime groups and over the past year we have investigated assaults, armed robberies, extortions, loan sharking, drug dealing, shootings and even murders that have taken place in and around these locations," said Ecklund.

Often, people most vulnerable to gambling addiction face the most barriers, including language, to social interaction. They may not know where else to go for entertainment, said Wong.

"Not everybody drives, so the illegal gambling house in the neighbourhood becomes very convenient," Wong said, adding people who work cash jobs - construction, restaurant work - may be drawn there more easily.

Of course, there’s also online gambling. "You don’t even need to leave your bed to gamble your house away," said Wong.

Families should recognize gambling addicts are sick, and shouldn’t disown them, Wong added.

"That’s just going to send (them) back to this vicious cycle."

Problem gamblers may hide behaviour from family, and some lose more than what people can make in a lifetime.

Fong said clients, when they’ve lost everything and are in a rage, will blame the government, saying things like, "If not for them legalizing gambling, or having this casino in my neighbourhood, then I wouldn’t have this problem now."

Some borrow from loan sharks, leaving their families scared they will be confronted about debts. Being involved in illegal activities makes therapy harder, said Fong.

"If it’s through legal means, there are legal ways of solving problems."

Funeral service for boy held in Stan Wadlow Park, where he died JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With white balloons carrying words of love floating up into the sky above Stan Wadlow Park, friends and family members of Isaiah Witt paid tribute to the 15year-old who was fatally stabbed there on Saturday, Oct. 7.

More than a hundred mourners - many of them Witt’s classmates and friends - turned out for a ceremony in the park to share both grief at having lost the teen and stories of the joy and happiness he brought to their lives.

Isaiah’s mother, Stephanie Witt, recalled how her son had a difficult life at times, but noted that he remained positive.

"From the time he was born, it was just the two of us, and I tried so hard to give him a good life, but he had to grow up very fast," she said through tears.

"Everybody that knew him knew how loving and caring and generous he was," she recalled before reading a journal entry Isaiah wrote on May 2 of this year. In the entry, he spoke of a 10-point scale with one representing hardship and struggle and 10 representing comfort, peace of mind and accomplishment.

"The fact that she’s a single parent who had me at 16, growing up wasn’t easy," Stephanie Witt read. "On the other hand, throughout all of it, I learned to stay strong and to keep my eyes on what’s right and wrong."

Isaiah wrote of how he found strength through fitness and how he believed he and his mother were turning a corner.

Mark Sprack, principal of Westwood Middle School when Isaiah was a student there, said Isaiah was always a genuinely caring

friend and classmate to all.

"I remember how he would come to the school office to advocate for a classmate who he felt had been treated unfairly or share a concern for someone he was worried about," he said. "He was genuinely concerned for others and offered a

lending hand, often without being asked."

Isaiah’s aunt, Monica Defreitas, recalled how Stephanie and Isaiah were an inseparable team and how they got strength from one another.

"Although life presented them many challenges, they could do anything and be anything together," she said. "He gave her more love than she’d ever thought possible and made her grow in ways she never imagined."

Greyson Balla, a longtime friend of Isaiah, recalled how he would always go out of his way to make everyone around him happier.

"I always remember Isaiah for his charismatic personality; he radiated positivity and kindness, he was a hilarious, polite, caring, supportive and overall amazing friend," he said.

The ceremony culminated in close friends and family releasing white balloons in memory of the fallen teen.

ONTARIO GOVERNMENT NOTICE NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study Highway 401 Westbound Rehabilitation of Nineteen Structures from Neilson Road to Warden Avenue - G.W.P. 2162-11-00 THE PROJECT The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has retained WSP Canada to undertake the Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Study for the rehabilitation and construction of operational improvements on the westbound Highway 401 Core and Collector lanes between Neilson Road and Warden Avenue. The project limits are located in the City of Toronto.

The project includes: pavement rehabilitation, drainage improvements, upgrading existing high mast lighting and underpass illumination, rehabilitation/replacement of sixteen structures and three culverts, upgrades to existing traffic signals, intersection improvements, replacing the core/collector separator barrier, widening of the existing collector lanes to provide an additional through lane from Neilson Road to the Kennedy Road interchange, and relocation of the collector to core transfer west of Kennedy Road. The study area is shown on the key plan below.

THE PROCESS The Detailed Design Study will follow the approved environmental planning process for Group ‘C’ projects under the MTO Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities 1999, as amended in 2000, with the opportunity for public input throughout. Group ‘C’ projects are considered approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act, subject to compliance with the Class EA and the application of mitigation measures where necessary. An Environmental Screening Document (ESD) will be prepared and filed with the MTO to document the environmental assessment process.

A brazen burglar in southeast Scarborough isn’t just targeting valuables, but young women and girls, police warn.

According to police, the suspect had conversations with "young female" residents during some of the break-ins and tried to "gather personal information about them."

In the last break-and-enter, which happened last Thursday, the suspect was confronted by a resident while he was going through her purse in her bedroom. The suspect immediately left the house, and the victim, who was unharmed, called 911. But within 30 minutes, police said, the suspect was on the next street over, peeking in the windows of another house.

This case has become a top priority for 43 Division’s major crime and neighbourhood safety units.

Campbell said auxiliary officers handed out 700 press releases in the affected neighbourhoods on the weekend "to ensure that everybody is aware of what’s happening."

The first burglary took place Sept. 25. The break-ins occurred in an area bounded by Ellesmere Road to the north, Lake Ontario to the south, Morningside Avenue to the west and the Durham Region border to the east.

The suspect is black with a light complexion, six-feet tall with brown eyes and a thin or a medium build.

Police urge residents to activate house alarms, keep porch and side lights on and lock all doors and windows every night.

"In two of the incidents, this person used some sort of an edged weapon to cut screens to access windows," Campbell said.

Police are also urging residents to report suspicious people and activity.

Great Lakes Brewery has been a leader in the craft beer business for 30 years and president Peter Bulut likes to work with local businesses.

One of his favourites is Crystal Bins, a company he says he found in a newspaper advertisement.

He cold-called the number in the ad and was surprised when he was offered a bin to be delivered immediately.

Where you live in Toronto has an impact on your car insurance rates, with residents in parts of Scarborough paying far more than those in many downtown neighbourhoods.

Where you live is a big factor in your car insurance rates JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Toronto has been ranked the fifth-most expensive city in Ontario when it comes to car insurance, but residents in parts of Scarborough feel the sting more than most.

According to Kanetix.ca, residents in some neighbourhoods pay upwards of $2,300 per year for insurance - nearly $950 more per year than residents in some downtown Toronto neighbourhoods.

Overall, Torontonians pay an average of $1,743 in premiums, behind only Brampton ($2,268), Vaughan ($1,825), Mississauga ($1,788), and Markham ($1,785). All five rank well above the provincial average of $1,316.

Residents in the Agincourt North (M1S postal codes), Milliken (M1V) and L’Amoreaux (M1W) pay an average of $2,384 according to Kanetix, with the Malvern (M1B) and Rouge (M1X) neighbourhoods trailing only slightly at $2,313.

Eglinton East and Kennedy Park in Scarborough, Mount Olive-Silverstone-Jamestown and West Humber-Clairville in Etobicoke, Glenfield-Jane Heights, Humbermede, Westminster-Branson, Bathurst Manor, Humber Summit and York University Heights in North York, and Oakwood Village, Brookhaven-Amesbury, and Weston in the former City of York also all pay an average of more than $2,100 per year.

"It usually comes down to statistics - places where there are a higher than average number of claims and a higher than average cost of claims," said Kanetix vice president Janine White regarding the reason for high premiums in some neighbourhoods. "The question you have to ask is ’why are there more accidents in some neighbourhoods?’"

White speculated that the lack

of transit options in outlying areas of the city means those who live there are more reliant on their cars. Rather than being able to hop on the subway for a quick trek or catch a bus to nearby amenities, those in Toronto’s suburbs often need to drive to get groceries or visit friends of family.

The numbers seem to bear that out. The City of Toronto’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan suggests that 70 per cent of residents in Etobicoke/York use their vehicle to get around. That number is 65 per cent in North York and Scarborough, but only 32 per cent in downtown Toronto and East York.

As a result, car insurance premiums are far lower in downtown Toronto despite the roads constantly being congested.

In the Casa Loma, Annex, University, Kensington-Chinatown, Trinity-Bellwoods and other downtown neighbourhoods, premiums are $1,491. In neighbourhoods such as Rosedale-Moore Park, the Church-Yonge Corridor, the Bay Street Corridor and Leaside-Bennington, they are $1,437.

"One of the biggest factors that goes into premiums overall is how much you drive," White said.

"There can also be an impact if road infrastructure doesn’t keep up with the pace of growth in an area."

The good news, White noted, is that Ontario auto insurance prices have remained stable in recent years, and actually decreased a few years back before starting to creep back up more recently.

Safe drivers can take a few steps to reduce their premiums: increasing their deductible, ensuring they have winter tires in winter and installing a telematics device that will monitor their driving habits.

"And if they’re still not satisfied, they should shop around," White said. "Every company will offer a different rate."

Police have released security camera images in the hopes of identifying a suspect in an assault at the Malvern Town Centre.

Toronto police said a man approached a kiosk in the middle of the mall, at 31 Tapscott Rd., and "without any verbal interaction or provocation" hit a 50-yearold man in the back of the head with his fist at about 1:40 p.m. Oct. 11.

"The man proceeded to push the kiosk, causing it to fall," police alleged in a news release. "The man then picked up a folding chair, raised it above his head and threw it at the man (victim)."

The suspect then alleg-

edly took a box cutter and held it towards the victim.

The suspect is 30 to 40 years old, about six-feet tall with black hair and a full beard and was wearing a black and white striped long-sleeve top, jeans and black running shoes.

He is believed to be "violent and dangerous" and shouldn’t be approached, police said.

Zakariye Ali Last Friday’s shooting happened at 1:22 a.m. in a parking lot on Morecambe Gate northeast of Finch and Victoria Park avenues.

According to police, four to five shots were fired

at a group of people.

Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said a 42-year-old woman was injured from "falling to the ground during the gunfire." The woman was not struck by a bullet and was treated for minor injuries.

"No victims appeared to be hit by gunfire, and 42 Division and guns and gangs are investigating," Sidhu said.

The shooter was last seen running northbound.

There is no accurate description of the suspect, Sidhu said.

Toronto police have issued a public safety alert after potentially harmful medication was reportedly lost in a Scarborough mall.

Police said four 90 ml brown plastic bottles of methadone were acciden-

tally left on a bench in the Parkway Mall, at Ellesmere Road and Victoria Park Avenue, Friday, Oct. 13.

The bottles were possibly in a plain brown paper bag.

"This medication could be harmful or fatal if ingested in quantity," police said in a news release.

Notice of Completion GO Rail Network Electrification Transit Project Assessment Process Metrolinx and Hydro One, as co-proponents, have completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the GO Rail Network Electrification Project.

The Project As part of Regional Express Rail, Metrolinx is proposing to electrify GO-owned corridors. The GO Rail Network Electrification undertaking will entail design and implementation of a traction power supply system and power distribution components including: an Overhead Contact System (OCS) along the rail corridors, electrical feeder routes, and a number of traction power facilities located within the vicinity of the rail corridors.

Port Union woman thanks neighbouring Good Samaritans An east Scarborough woman is thanking her neighbours who helped clean up her property after strong winds blew down part of a tree in front of her home Sunday, Oct. 15.

"The tree is as old as the neighbourhood and was injured by the ice storm a few years back, losing a large limb on its left side.

(Sunday), it cracked right through the centre," the Clappison Boulevard resident, Lorelee Sankarlal, wrote in an email.

"Neighbours as far as two streets away heard the cracking noise and came outside to see what had happened."

Part of the City of Toronto-owned tree came down on the Port Union-area road blocking traffic and onto Sankarlal’s driveway (her car was not in the driveway at the time).

Scarborough resident Lorelee Sankarlal is grateful to her neighbours on Clappison Boulevard who were cleaning up the mess left on her property Sunday, Oct. 15, when strong winds damaged a tree in front of her home. using a chainsaw to cut the fallen tree down and cleared the way in an hour.

Sankarlal returned home to find her neighbours busy in front of her home and was overjoyed

by their generosity and kindness.

"It really is a community of friends, neighbours and family here. I cannot thank them enough," she wrote.

Strategies for making the most of your small business

Conventional wisdom suggests that free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Professional, paid counsel, however, remains one of the strongest strategic pillars for small business entrepreneurs seeking success.

“Make use of the experts, be they lawyers, financial advisors, chartered accountants and bankers,” opined Business Development Bank of Canada finance and consulting GTA North vice-president Stephen Bald.

Buying expertise tops his list of the five key tactics entrepreneurs should employ to survive and thrive, said Bald, based in BDC’s Vaughan office which serves 6,200 GTA clients, one-third of whom are small businesses.

Secondly, start-ups in particular must develop a solid business plan, he said. A blue print detailing what you want to accomplish and how you are most likely to achieve goals and objectives is an absolute

necessity.

The third step, according the 17-year BDC veteran, is identifying the specific actions required to bring the plan to fruition.

“Implement those actions and make sure you have all the right resources,” said Bald of the fourth strategy. Resources include technology, manpower and finances in addition to being savvy in the burgeoning realm of social media.

The fifth element is monitoring and measuring the efficiency of your plan.

“Don’t be afraid to make changes or amendments,” he said. “Don’t be married to the plan. Be flexible.”

Many small enterprises fail because owners hope for something unforeseen that will turn fortunes around, Bald said. His best advice to those is to recognize that their first loss is their best loss.

“They need to know that some things can be outside their control,” he said. “They should be flexible to work around them.”

Daughters in the Workplace: Supporting Working Female Caregivers in Scarborough Providing supportive and much needed care for a senior loved one can affect almost every aspect of an individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life - including their work, yet many employers are unaware of the struggles family caregivers face. Although the responsibilities and challenges that come with caring for children while working full-time are openly discussed, the same cannot always be said for the difficulties associated with caring for an aging loved one. A recent

Home Instead Senior Care survey found that 1 in 4 working daughters experience workplace stigma associated with being a caregiver for an aging parent, and 23 percent say that their supervisor is unsympathetic.

With October officially recognized as Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s History Month in Canada, now is the time to address the lack of dialogue and support for working female caregivers. As part of starting this conversation, Home Instead Senior Care recently launched their Daughters in the Workplace campaign. The initiative is a public education program that offers free resources, such as conversation starters and health tips for caregiving employees, communication tips for employers, and warning signs for HR professionals that indicate when caregiving employees might need support. Home Instead Senior Care is encouraging people across the community to use these resources to create a more caregiver-friendly environment at their workplaces and to help support employees

Although Daughters in the Workplace focuses on working women, the principles behind this initiative apply to all working caregivers. She died, after a happy visit from family, on October 13, 2017 at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie with the best of care.
