Scarborough Museum honours artists collective
Day of remembrance
Desserts by Lamplight event planned for this Saturday MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The Scarborough Museum is honouring Toronto artists this Saturday who are capable of making quilts out of paper and teaching printmaking skills to young museum volunteers. Though strangers to Scarborough, members of the inPrint Collective studied local artifacts and created an exhibit, Encounters with Scarborough, for the museum’s 50th year which has been held over in its Thomson Memorial Park buildings for months. The non-profit group also taught printmaking to around 15 of the museum’s youth team as part of a three-year youth diversity project sponsored by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. It was a treat to see how dedicated
and connected the youth were to the museum, Maureen Da Silva, a spokesperson for the collective, which started in 2008 with five graduating York University Fine Arts students who wanted to promote printmaking and find places to exhibit their art. Members had the volunteers create art on paper containing wildflower seeds, which were placed on stakes in a garden along a wall outside. “We had them plant their work,” said Da Silva, who said the biodegradable art plays with concepts of memory and time. While the paper disappears, the seeds remain in the soil, and are meant to show even “unknown” people contribute to Scarborough, she said this week. “The people maybe you don’t >>>ART, page 15

Hospital hosts meetings on future of health care Big changes are coming to local health care, and starting next week, The Scarborough Hospital is taking that message to the community. Hospital officials have previously held meetings to let residents know a new provincial funding formula will make it necessary to move some
services out of its Birchmount or General campuses. Under review, for example, is the Maternal Newborn and Child Care Program. The hospital has recently noted “a significant decrease” in deliveries at both campuses and estimates it could save up to $5 mil-
lion by consolidating the program at one campus. Other choices will be recommended in a consultant’s strategic review for the hospital, which is expected to be finished and released by January. TSH, meanwhile, is asking
residents to come to community meetings “to share information” with residents and gather their opinions. The Centre for Information and Community Services on Midland Avenue hosts the first evening meeting next Thursday, Dec. 13.

Scarborough councillor backs ranked ballot system MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com If a mayoral byelection looms in Toronto, people may warm up to a different – and some say, less divisive – way to vote for city officials, called ranked balloting. And this week in Scarborough, supporters of the concept were claiming they could swing Toronto Council to their cause, making city elections “way more interesting and fair” a few years from now. “This is winnable. We’ve actually got a majority of councillors supporting this,” Dave Meslin said during a presentation of his civic engagement campaign, The Fourth Wall, Monday at the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club. “I think we’ll get it.” On its website, the Ranked Ballot Initiative of Toronto (RaBIT) claims 19 sitting councillors plus Mayor Rob Ford as supporters, not enough to carry the 45-member council. But Meslin and Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie both say they have found enough “soft” support in the rest of the ranks. Interestingly, Don Valley East Councillor Shelley
The Fourth Wall creator Dave Meslin, left, and Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie explain proposals for boosting public participation in the city’s governance to residents at the East Scarborough Boys’ and Girls’ Club.
Carroll, who’s declared she would run in a byelection against Ford, and Trinity-Spadina MP Olivia Chow, touted by many to run, are both in the RaBIT camp. According to the site (www.123toronto.ca), so are Karen Stintz and Adam Vaughan, other
councillors spoken of as contenders for Ford’s chair. Meslin said fear of vote-splitting often pushes challengers off the ballot, particularly first-time candidates who are women or visible minorities. “I want to see them all run. I want to have choice,” he
said. Though Queen’s Park must first approve them, a switch to ranked ballots would give voters the option of naming second and third choices. If no candidate gets 50 per cent of the votes, candidates with the least votes drop off and their second-place support is transferred to others. These “instant runoffs” continue until one candidate is shown to have majority support, though some comes from being a second- or third-best choice. Meslin said this encourages candidates to be nicer as they hope to pick up second-place votes. The idea was well-received by some of Ainslie’s constituents at a town hall meeting. “I’ve always thought that the way elections are run is kind of stupid,” said Vince Puhakka, who declared he likes the ranked ballot after seeing Meslin and Ainslie explain it. “I think it means you get less polarization.” Dennis Reinsborough, another resident, said he’d be against having a separate run-off election, but noted Ireland has instant run-offs, and “if you don’t get a majority, you go to the second round.”
A Ford supporter, Reinsborough admitted to thinking the mayor would probably benefit from votesplitting if he ran again. “I think he would lose, but then the majority of the voting clientele have truly chosen what they want.” Ainslie, who has caused many Fourth Wall proposals to be studied through the city hall committee he chairs, said he likes RaBIT because “one of my colleagues in the last election won with 18 per cent of the vote,” meaning James Pasternak of York Centre, adding Pasternak “often gets heckled” when he claims at council meetings to speak for people in his ward. Reached this week, Pasternak, who in 2010 scored the most votes of 12 contenders after the ward’s longtime incumbent Mike Feldman retired, said he’s “quite reluctant” to support ranked ballots. “It would create enormous confusion among candidates and the voting public at a time when we’re trying to increase voter participation, not decrease it,” Pasternak said, adding once ranked balloting starts, Toronto will have “de facto political parties” muscling into municipal politics.
A dozen reasons to get married Testing of gender leads 12/12/12 wedding dates still available in Scarborough RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Looking to get married on 12/12/12? You might just be in luck. Even though the wedding chamber in city hall downtown is all booked up for the triple digit day, which falls on Wednesday, Dec. 12, Scarborough, Etobicoke, North York and York chapels are still accepting bookings for the auspicious wedding date. “We haven’t noticed any appreciable difference in the amount of bookings,” said Andrew Kerr, who is supervisor of registry services for the Scarborough wedding chamber, located in the civic centre. Kerr said the chapel holds about 20 people and gets at least two to three marriage bookings per day, although Wednesday’s schedule shows just a handful of bookings.
“It’s not an issue for us,” he said yesterday. That’s not the case at Toronto City Hall where there are no bookings to be had, said an administrator with the privately operated wedding chambers located on the third floor of the east tower. “We’re totally booked,” said Marna (who declined to give her last name) from the chapel. “It’s going to be a busy day.” She said 20 wedding ceremonies are planned for each of the chapel’s two rooms, which can hold around 30 people, starting right at 9 a.m. until closing at 7 p.m. Couples have a maximum of 30 minutes to complete the ceremony, which takes around 10 to 15 minutes to be administered and costs $234. In Etobicoke, the historic Applewood/Shaver House has only
one wedding ceremony booked for 12/12/12 - at noon. Property manager Terry Faichnie said she received several requests for noon bookings, the latest coming on Monday, Dec. 3. “It was either that time or bust,” said Faichnie from the Homestead, which handles wedding ceremony bookings on behalf of the city. She said the original booking for the noon time slot was made back in October. Noon wedding chapel bookings are also reserved in both the North York and York civic centres, said city manager of registry services Cathy Burns. She said no bookings are scheduled for East York, where wedding ceremonies are not administered mid-week. Internationally, the auspicious nature of the 12/12/12 date is anticipated to cause a rush of wedding bookings.
to zoo panda switch
Er Shun, chosen by China to be the male half of a giant panda pair appearing at the Toronto Zoo next spring, had a secret – she’s female. Scientists only discovered this important fact about Er Shun, whose name means “smooth,” after her blood was tested last month in preparation for the endangered mammal’s transport to Canada with Ji Li, a female partner, the zoo announced yesterday. “With younger giant pandas it is more difficult to determine the sex and this is confirmed through genetic testing techniques,” Dr. William Rapley, the zoo’s conservation, education and wildlife director, said in a release explaining why Er Shun was previously thought to be male. The zoo, after enjoying brief international fame with the 2011 “bromance” of male African penguins Pedro and Buddy, won’t be
going with a same-sex panda lineup, however. The Chinese government is dumping Ji Li and substituting Da Mao, a male panda from Chengdu, to make the long trip to Canada with Er Shun. Da Mao was born through artificial insemination at the Chengdu Research Base on Sept. 1, 2008 and hand-reared. “We are appreciative of the fact that the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens conducted the studies so that the situation can be rectified and we can continue to move forward in smoothly handling this important conservation breeding loan,” Rapley added in the release. The zoo expects to open its new Giant Panda Exhibit after the Er Shun and Da Mao arrive in March as part of a 10-year loan that includes fiveyear stays in Toronto and Calgary.

Canada brings its best to Toronto 2015 T
his week’s announcement by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) that it will be boosting funding levels for athletes in advance of the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games, which will be held in Toronto, is a confirmation these games will feature the best athletes from Canada and other participating countries. our view The COC is devoting $2.6 million of a $100-million commitShare in the ment to high-performance sport Pan Am Games in order to allow our athletes to focus on their training as they excitement gear up for the 2015 games. While we won only one gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics, we still finished with a total medal count of 18 for a 36th place overall finish. At the London Paralympics, we were 20th overall with a total of 31 medals including seven golds. When Canada last hosted the Pan Am Games, in Winnipeg in 1999, we finished third overall behind the United States and Cuba with a total of 64 golds, 52 silvers and 80 bronzes. Canada will be aiming for first at Toronto 2015 as this week’s funding announcement proves. It also sends a message to the other 42 participating countries about the quality of competition. They will have to send their best. And we need to show them our best – not just in competition, but in how we host these games. Toronto residents have every reason to start getting excited about the Pan Am Games, and that’s especially true in communities such as Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough where a number of high-profile events will be taking place. The aquatic centre being built beside the University of Toronto Scarborough campus will be home to not only swimming and diving, but the field house will host Parapan volleyball and fencing. York University in North York will host the prestigious track and field events at a new stadium. The Etobicoke Pan Am hub will be centred around the Etobicoke Olympium and Centennial Park and will be home to BMX cycling, archery and bowling events, along with also serving as a swimming training centre. Residents in these areas can share in the Pan Am excitement by not only attending events in their neighbourhood, but also by volunteering to help at their local venues. For more info on the games and volunteering, visit www.toronto2015.org newsroom

To the editor: I think it is time those who want Olivia Chow to run for mayor of Toronto to get a grip on reality. This is nothing more than a cynical and opportunistic attempt to grab power by the left. This will only help return the left to the good old days of the David Miller administration when the wards of the inner city tail were able to wag the dog. It was good times for those who were able to feed at the public trough, but not so good for the rest of us in Toronto. The last person we need for mayor is this ex-crusader for the downtrodden masses. By running amok with their leftist agenda, she and others on the left have eroded the ability of our police service to do its job. If she should return to Toronto politics, I would encourage her to move her home to one of our risky areas in the city so she can reap the full benefit of our eroded police service. Isn’t it also a basic human right to be able to live safely and in peace? Chris Belfontaine
Teachers need to be appreciated for their work To the editor: How furious would you be if your employer told you the benefits you negotiated at the time of your employment were no longer afforded to you and your colleagues? Then imagine how much your blood would boil if they told you your right to fight this decision was also taken away. Finally, think about the extra hours that you put in that are not appreciated, but you understand their importance to make the company and/or your clients more successful. If reading this has got you thinking someone must have lost their mind if they tried to pull this at your job, then maybe we should collectively be more supportive of the teachers in Ontario. Without teachers helping us all along the way, we might not have accomplished the successes we have been
blessed to achieve. Think about that teacher that stayed after school with you to help you with math, coached your team or came in early to meet with your parents to help with your development or guidance. The time that they put in at all levels of education should be rewarded, but instead their profession has been diminished to the fact they get off before 5 p.m. and have summers off. Without going into detail of Ontario’s Bill 115, teachers are losing several benefits that were negotiated in past contracts, and there have been many people weighing in on the topic. In the lunchroom at work I heard a few of my colleagues saying that their tax dollars are being paid to have teacher’s teach, so too bad so sad for them. They went on to say that they wish they could be off at 3:30 p.m. and have the luxury of all the holidays they
get. Wait a minute! If you are thinking that all that goes into teaching is the above then you really are mistaken and should re-assess the hard work our teachers do. I am not a teacher, however, I see firsthand every day the hard work and care that goes into a teacher’s preparation and sacrifice for their students by watching my wife, who is a teacher. Teaching is not as simple as just writing on a chalkboard and hoping for the best. Teachers are responsible for helping their students understand the material, protecting them and truly attempting to help them succeed in whatever profession their hearts desire. For teachers to make this happen they are always trying to find creative ways to help each student learn and become better throughout the year. This is accomplished by bringing work home to
mark, countless hours making tests, quizzes and assignments that focus on the topics being taught, fielding questions from parents, holding meetings, interviews and report cards. Teachers need to be quick on their feet if something happens during yard duty, further the teachings of manners at all levels of education and encourage students to be well rounded by recognizing talents their students might be too shy or scared to tap into within the school and beyond. Teachers need to wear several hats as managers, social workers, nurses, police officers, consultants, engineers (science projects), artists, and more. Our teachers need to be appreciated and not treated like they are a second-class profession, because we all have benefited from at least one teacher in our lives. Danion Beckford

n Local budget forum
Residents are invited to have their say about Toronto’s proposed 2013 city budget at Scarborough Civic Centre Saturday. Scarborough Speaks Out, sched-
uled for between 2:30 and 5 p.m. on Dec. 8, is also being billed a chance for residents to find out what the budget may contain, and how that could affect programs for such things as housing and transit. Toronto Council’s budget committee is holding public hearings at city hall Dec. 10 and 11 to hear from citizens before council votes on the budget
in January, but no official hearings are planned for Scarborough. Scarborough councillors have been invited, but the forum is organized and hosted by advocacy groups including Scarborough Civic Action Network, Respect Scarborough and Public Interest. With a little bit of elbow grease, and everyday household ingredients, your kitchen appliances can look (and smell) like new, ready for your next open house. Dishwasher: Most homeowners believe that the regular use of a commercial rinse aid is enough to keep a dishwasher clean. Regularly cleaning the seams and liner of your dishwasher is also imperative to its effectiveness. Over time, residue and food particles build up, and can affect the outcome of your wash cycle. Bacteria buildup can also cause lingering, unpleasant odours. Use a scouring pad dipped in baking soda to remove residue and stains from the interior surface and crevices of your dishwasher. Next, fill the detergent pocket with lemonade powder (yes, lemonade) and run a regular cycle (or cleaning cycle). The ascorbic acid in the powder will help to safely remove any remaining buildup, and will leave your dishwasher smelling clean and fresh. Oven/ Range: Cleaning an oven can be a tough job. However there are natural and effective alternatives for cleaning even the toughest baked-on spills. Start by loosening any baked-on food inside your oven using a plastic spatula. Next, squeeze the juice from 2 lemons into an oven safe dish, and throw in the lemon remains. Turn on your oven and bake the lemons/juice for 30 minutes at 250 degrees. The citric acid
These days, many first time home buyers are juggling a lot more than their finances. They have to deal with the challenge of well-meaning, but unwanted opinion. Why? Real estate agents agree young adults often look to their parents for financial help. This leads to a greater involvement in the house-hunting process, and new home buyers soon discover that their family members bring along their own opinions in addition to their cash. But when the young buyers’ dream home ideals clash with the older generations’ vision, both parties must do a balancing act. “Satisfying both tastes is key,” explains Claudine Montanoareal estate agent on W Network’s reality series My House Your Money. “For young adults looking in the urban city, I stage the place to appeal with a modern contemporary look for the young professional—sleek and modern, bold and intense in terms of paint, furniture and décor.” When extended family members come along, the presentation certainly changes.
OPEN HOUSE SAT & SUN - 143 LAWSON RD
“To appeal to young adults and their parents, it has to feel modern, but traditional as well. The look is not as bold in terms of paint and décor, but has a more relaxed, cosy feel with softer furnishings throughout, so both age groups can connect with the space.” Having been through the process previously, parents tend to be much more critical in home purchasing and are a bigger challenge to delight. “The young couple is usually more excited, and focus on the things on their wish-list they are getting. In fact, they are excited to just purchase something they can call their own,” adds Montano. When it comes down to it, winning this war is easier than imagined for the new home buyers, says fellow My House Your Money real estate agent, Helene Baguley. “Most parents or extended family members, even if they are providing the down payment, want to see their kids happy at all costs.”

will help to loosen any residue that may still be inside your oven, while releasing a fresh lemon scent. Using the rough side of a scouring sponge dipped in baking soda, scrub away the remaining debris, and wipe the oven clean using a cloth and warm water. You’ll be amazed at how fresh your next lasagna will taste, after being baked in a naturally cleaned oven. Refrigerator: It’s hard to believe that the cleanliness of your fridge can impact the taste of foods. Cleaning your refrigerator monthly with natural ingredients can dramatically extend the life and quality of your produce. Start by removing all of the food from your refrigerator and discarding items that are aged or expired. Combine ½ cup of baking soda with 1 tbsp of vinegar and stir to form a thick paste. Apply a small amount of paste to a soft scouring pad, and scrub away any stains that may exist. Follow by wiping the refrigerator clean with a damp sponge (an old toothbrush can be used on small spaces and crevices as well. ) Shelves and drawers should be removed for cleaning if necessary. Don’t forget to vacuum the undercarriage of your fridge, and to wipe down the outside using a cloth with warm water and vinegar. The same steps can be followed to clean your freezer, however you’ll need to work quickly and use hot water to rinse.

Devon Muhic, Youth Resource Lead, right, and Madeleine Callaghan, curator, look at art work made by local youths in a workshop led by the inPrint Collective at the Scarborough Museum.
Art works will ‘sprout’ in spring >>>from page 1 know about still somehow leave a mark.” Curator Madeleine Callaghan expects to see something sprout from the work next spring, “which will be really neat.” Among the pieces – some mysterious, some whimsical – which inPrint members made is a quilt, done mainly by Shannon Moynagh, who named it “community garden” and strengthened the paper with an edible vegetable paste so it could be sewn together. “It’s paper you could actually sleep under,” Callaghan said.
The group will receive the city-operated museum’s 2012 Award of Merit during its annual Desserts by Lamplight celebration, and Da Silva said members consider the honour a “feather in our cap.” Saturday’s event starts at 6:30 p.m. and will feature singing elves, the DMSQ saxophone quartet, and what Callaghan promised are unbelievable desserts, both historical and contemporary, served in the museum buildings. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased in advance by calling 416-338-8807.

Pan Am athletes promised funding for 2015 Toronto games Toronto Olympians applaud cash infusion of $2.6 million

anada is throwing down the gauntlet when it comes to the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) is devoting $2.6 million of an earlier four-year, $100 million commitment to highperformance sport in the country to ensure Canada gets to send its top athletes to the games. For many of the country’s amateur athletes, funding is often lacking, meaning any time spent competing can leave them in the lurch financially. The funding announcement, which was made Wednesday, at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium, will allow athletes to focus more on competition and less on worrying whether they can afford to travel or take the time off work to take part in the games. “Canada will truly be

able to put our best team forward on the field of play,” said COC President Marcel Aubut. “Every athlete who can compete will compete.” That, Aubut said, will lead to a contingent of more than 1,000 Canadian athletes in the various Pan
Am and Parapan games. TO2015 CEO Ian Troop noted the overall funding commitment will have an impact that will last long after the Pan Am Games have ended, as high-performance sporting facilities being built with the funds will help

Canada has served notice it’s bringing its A-Game to the Toronto 2015 Games,” he said. The funding is especially welcome given the Games will take place on Canadian soil. Troop pointed out that success at the Pan Am Games often
translates to success at the Olympics. Should that trend continue, a good showing at Toronto 2015 would bode well for Canadian athletes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the 2016 Olympics. Olympians Donna Vakalis and Jason Burnett also spoke of the importance of funding. Vakalis, who competed in modern pentathlon at the London 2012 Games, said there is something special about competing on home soil. “This support will amplify that special magic,” she said. Burnett, an Olympic silver medal-winning trampolinist, noted the funding will serve as an enormous boost to Canadian athletes. “High-level competition is incredibly stressful just on its own without having to worry about the financial complications that come along with it,” he said, adding the infusion of money will reduce one element of strain on athletes.
