New Year’s The final cut Eve events slated for Scarborough Scarborough’s official New Year’s Eve celebration offers a lot of activities for families looking to celebrate. The complimentary Dec. 31 countdown event includes party hats, clowns, arts and crafts, balloons, face painting, live music and children’s movies, a reptile display - even free parking. Celebrations to ring in 2013 run from 7 p.m. to midnight in the Scarborough Civic Centre Rotunda on Borough Drive, near the Scarborough Centre RT Station. Dan the Music Man, Sol de Cuba, TC3, Moo’d Swing and Two or the Show are all set to perform and feature films Madagascar 3 and Ice Age 4 - Continental Drift will be shown. There will also be public skating, weather permitting, on the Albert Campbell Square outdoor rink. Scarborough’s city councillors also chose to continue the tradition of a New Year’s Levee at the Civic Centre - a chance for everyone to meet municipal politicians and have a hot chocolate - on Sunday, Jan. 6. The levee is from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and will be followed from 3 to 5 p.m. by a Sunday Serenade concert by the Good Times Orchestra.

The 24-hour count around branches of the Rouge River in Markham and Scarborough on Sunday, Jan. 13, will help uncover changes and bird populations and insight into the watershed’s ecologi-

cal health. “Some things are hard to analyze, some are a little easier,” said Sheryl Santos, the park’s stewardship coordinator. Those who brave the cold in

their assigned areas may spot wild turkeys, frequently seen in the park, especially north of Steeles Avenue. Santos said 32 members of the species - lately seen wandering

Owner wants Ikea monkey returned to her MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com At first, Yasmin Nakhuda decided she didn’t want the monkey she named Darwin. Nakhuda said she thought the tiny macaque in her Agincourt home was suffering, missing its biological parents. “In the middle of the night he would wake up and have anxiety attacks,” and would curl into a ball, she recalled this week. The primate now known to the world as the “Ikea monkey” seemed too much then for the Scarborough woman to handle. Changing Darwin’s diaper, she said, “was so difficult and horrific” and there was no real bond between them. “I didn’t know how much a baby monkey needs his mother. He was rejecting me.” When a man who had brought Darwin to her from Montreal returned, Nakhuda, a real estate lawyer, told him she couldn’t cope. “I didn’t expect a monkey to require so much time,” she said. But Darwin, who was barely more than two and a half months old, wouldn’t go with the man, “and he started screaming. We were both shocked.” The monkey – named Darwin because “his little fingers, totally like a little human being,” made Nakhuda think of “the missing link” – was her constant companion for six months, until the Ikea incident. Today, Nakhuda hopes to be in a courtroom arguing Toronto Animal Services seized Darwin from her illegally, and she should get him back. In her Markham Road law office, Nakhuda said she committed to give the monkey — she says is a Japanese macaque (TAS says Darwin is a rhesus macaque) — round-the-

clock attention. “I need to be always within his view,” she explained, adding “monkeys don’t make good pets generally” because people can’t take such good care of them. But Darwin became “the pivot of our family” and accompanied Nakhuda to work, the gym, the nail salon, Quisnos, and The Brick. The

monkey was on a leash around unfamiliar people, but Nakhuda said her husband, children, office staff and clients were supportive. Nakhuda said she and Darwin had been escorted out of the North York Ikea before, but on Dec. 9, she needed a picture frame and cards for her staff. She parked and left the monkey in a double-locked “soft

crate” in her locked car. Being a “very, very smart little monkey,” Nakhuda managed to escape both and wandered the parking lot screeching, “looking for his mother,” Nakhuda said, before Toronto Animal Services arrived. The Scarborough woman said the monkey loved being dressed. On that day, Darwin was dressed in

a sheepskin coat and diaper, which the TAS officers asked Nakhuda to remove. “He loved the coat. He wanted it on, he felt warm,” describing the moment as traumatic for the macaque. “Darwin started screaming when I had him in my arm. He was absolutely devastated and he started screaming,” Nakhuda said. Nakhuda said she thought the city employees would check Darwin for diseases and return him, but added when she called a supervisor the next day no one returned her call. “I didn’t expect them to take my monkey and say it’s theirs.” There are, of course, other opinions on how Darwin was faring during the Ikea visit and on Nakhuda’s ownership of the monkey. Dollars for Darwin, a campaign at the Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary to raise money in the monkey’s name, declares Darwin (in a first-person account posted by shelter president and co-founder Sherri Delaney) was “scared and confused” when found. “I am so happy to finally be able to live and act like a real monkey!” says the campaign testimonial, which has raised $2,667 for the Sunderland, ON, sanctuary so far. Nakhuda dismisses the sanctuary’s view Darwin needs to learn from other monkeys and perhaps a surrogate monkey mother. The city, which maintains monkey ownership in Toronto is illegal, may be granted an adjournment this week, which Nakhuda said is a delay meant to break her bond with the monkey. “Assuming I cannot own Darwin in Toronto, I should have been offered an opportunity to take Darwin and leave Toronto,” she saidLakes has no prohibition.

She has been a member of the Scarborough Arts Council and graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design nine years ago. Bhatti also holds a university degree of fine arts from Lahore, Pakistan. Bhatti has been a resident in Canada since 2002. She has found solace at the Scarborough Arts Council as the community has helped her keep painting while she continues to search for a job in the arts field. She is looking for a career as an art

instructor in particular in her home area of Scarborough. Bhatti has also been artist-in-residence at Scarborough Arts, which is located at 1859 Kingston Rd.

To the editor: Re: ‘Mayor’s mandate must continue,’ Letters, Dec. 13. I find it most interesting that people like letter writer David C. Searle are pleased Mayor Rob Ford does not support unions. I gather the letter writer is not employed by a union, therefore unions are wrong. Years ago when men tried to unionize a company, they were often beaten for the attempt to do so. These brave men brought about wonderful changes for many of the workers. No more 60-hour weeks with poor pay. No more overtime with maybe $1 for supper money. It is not the unions that are causing the upset in today’s economy. If union jobs are wiped out, the letter writer would be surprised at the change back to the “good old days” of long hours and low wages – not only in union jobs. Joy Taylor

anta Claus was scheduled to make a special appearance at a mall near me last Saturday, so I decided to drop by to have a heart-to-heart with the big guy. I wasn’t the only one. When I got there I encountered the longest line-up I’ve seen since the opening of Star Trek 99: The Search For A Believable Hair Piece For Kirk. At the back was my neighbour’s daughter, Jasmine. I tucked in behind her and gave her a tap on the shoulder. Normally Jasmine breaks into a big smile when she sees me, but this time she frowned. “I hate to break it to you, Jamie, but you’re not allowed in this line,” she scolded. “Why not?” I asked. “You have to be little,” she said sternly. “But I’m five-foot-two. You always tell me how

short I am.” “I meant a little boy or a little girl,” she clarified. “Says who?” I cried. “Christmas 101.” “I never heard that carol,” I said skeptically. “It’s not a carol. It’s a rule.” (She pronounced it “ruwull.”) “The golden ru-wull,” I asked. “I don’t know what colour,” she replied resolutely. “But you better get out of line fast or somebody might call a security guard.” “What if I go to that face-painting booth next to his sleigh and get my face painted to look like a little boy or little girl?”

Jasmine scowled. “That’s the oldest trick in the book. Santa didn’t get to be Santa falling for that kind of stuff.” “But if I don’t stand in line, how am I going to sit on his lap?” I whimpered. “You can’t sit on Santa’s lap. You have to be little to do that, too, obviously.” “But I’m not much bigger than you are and judging by the speed at which kids grow these days, you’ll probably be taller than me by the time we get to Santa.” “Jamie, what part of little BOY or little GIRL don’t you understand?” “But if I don’t sit on his lap how will he know what I want for Christmas?” “You can’t ask Santa for stuff. You have to be a little boy or a little girl.” “Can I tell the two elves he brought with him what I want?” I pleaded. “No. You have to be a little boy or a little girl.” “Can I touch Rudolph’s

But a ruwull is a ru-wull.” “Can’t you just toss me a bone here at least?” I sniveled pathetically. She paused for what seemed like an eternity and then took a deep breath. “OK. Though it goes against my better judgment, I’ll ask Santa for a bone. But I’m gonna pretend it’s for me and I’m definitely not going to toss it to you until he’s looking the other way. I’ve got a tradition to uphold. Little kids all over this mall – and the world – are counting on me.”

Lots to do in Scarborough over the holidays N ow that the rush toward Christmas Day has passed, we’re hoping our readers can take some time over the next few days to enjoy their community with family and friends.

For many, that enjoyment means hitting the stores today and over the next few days for the sales that come with Boxing Day. Have a great time and we hope you find some bargains. Poor time to force province’s hand To the editor: Re: ‘Teachers need to be appreciated for their work,’ Letters, Dec. 7. We all know the importance of the teaching profession to our children and to the development of our society. The points made the letter writer are quite valid. Yes, teachers deserve to be well paid, but not overpaid. Teachers deserve to have the same quality of benefits, as do all public servants, as the private sector; but no more than that. Teachers are salaried employees and as such, the extra hours grading, assessing, preparing and upgrading has already been taken into account when they instruct their representatives (the union) to negotiate their remuneration, just as within the private sector. However, unlike the private sector, where the majority of professionals are not unionized, teachers enjoy a special

status. They currently have a monopoly within their profession and despite calling their bargaining sessions “negotiated agreements”, they essentially hold school boards, the provincial government and students hostage every time their contract comes up for renewal. To avoid confrontation, work stoppages and harm to the students, the boards and/ or the province caves in to the unions expensive demands. The province, the boards and the taxpayers can no longer afford to pay for benefits and costs they themselves can never expect to enjoy. Teachers’ pensions need to be reformed. Sick day allowances need to be reformed. Pay levels and tenure need to be reformed. The costs are unsustainable. And to address the letterwriter’s concern that if what is happening through Bill 115 now were to happen in the private sector, that blood

would boil. It already is happening everyday, within every industry, in Canada and the United States within large multi-nationals, mediumsized corporations and small local companies. The current most popular ruse is new letters of employment, changing an existing job title or description. To remain employed at your firm, whether there eight months or 20 years, you have to sign the new employment letter. If you fail to sign, you are considered to have “voluntarily quit” the firm. If you do sign the new employment letter, you will have agreed to accept the provincial minimums under employment standards for pay in lieu of notice and severance, no matter your previous “common law” entitlement. In the private sector, it is called, “simply part of the business”. In the public sector it is called a Charter violation. Clifford J. Layne

To the editor: In light of the situation concerning teacher’s basic rights, I felt it appropriate to write from the often forgotten perspective of a student. This year, we learned about children’s rights. I was surprised at all the different rights children have because, most of the time, we are the ones who are being ignored and neglected. I understand many of my teachers do not agree with Bill 115. Even though teachers may consider giving up extra-curricular activities as a good strategy, it is not fair to the students who have to suffer. I do not think it is fair for students in elementary, middle or secondary schools to have to go to school and only focus on academics. For many students, extracurricular activities help them balance their schoolwork, issues that may be going on at school or at home and take a break. With a lack of these activities, parents might have to enrol their kids in out-ofschool clubs. Did you know that school clubs can also affect a child’s academic progress? Studies show students who are enrolled in clubs initially do better in school than children who are not enrolled. Universities do not only look at grades, but also look for a well-rounded person who is involved in extracurricular activities. If you were a high school student applying to university during this pause, your overall image might not look as appealing to the university as you might have hoped. Another reason Bill 115 is not fair to students is because it limits their social circles. It is easy to make friends and be social in extra-curricular clubs. There are many disadvantages associated with the teacher’s fight for Bill 115. Zoo hosts Boxing Day treats walk, New Year’s countdown RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com This holiday season, the Toronto Zoo is inviting all residents to join in the festivities. While the zoo is closed Christmas Day, it re-opens on Dec. 26 with its annual Boxing Day Christmas Treats Trek, where animals are fed special treats. This year, renovations in the Eurasia pavil-

ion, where two giant pandas on loan from China are to be housed, will provide a surprise “twist” to the annual event, which is in its 37th year. Attendees will also receive a Littlest Pet Shop gift courtesy toy manufacturer Hasbro and admission is half-price all day on Dec. 26. Zoo-goers are asked to bring a non-perishable item to donate to the food bank. On New Year’s Eve, the zoo will host from 5

to 8 p.m. a family countdown to 2013. The annual event, in its 10th year, will feature animal visits and zookeeper talks and a full line-up of family-friendly entertainment including a 1960s cover band, an appearance by Po from the hit film franchise Kung Fu Panda, the Majinx Magic Show team and the WotWots children’s television characters. Tickets for the outdoor event are $20 for adults and seniors and $12 for children between the ages of four and 12. Children under three are admitted for free but must

have a ticket. The zoo is also inviting patrons to sign up for its White Lion holiday special, part of its ongoing Adopt and Animal sponsorship program. JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of Toronto District School Board (TDSB) elementary school teachers took to streets Tuesday morning, protesting outside the TDSB offices at 5050 Yonge St. The teachers staged a oneday walkout, leaving work to picket the school board, office of the Ministry of Education, and several schools across Toronto. At issue was the controversial Bill 115, which the teachers’ union says strips them of their collective bargaining rights. Terri Lynn Platt, an executive officer with Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT), noted the union has not staged a strike or walkout since 1987, underscoring how staunchly they oppose the bill. “Teachers are very patient people and we’re at the end of our patience,” she said.

“It’s been 25 years since we were last on a picket line, so we don’t do it lightly.” Not about money The union was quick to point out the disagreement is not about money. Platt pointed to the fact the bill essentially hamstrings the union and calls for a number of concessions. “There’s language in the memorandum of understanding that says (teachers are) going to have three P.D. days without pay,” she said. “Those aren’t days off for teachers. P.D. days are working days.” She added the union’s decision to stage a walkout was a way to strike a blow for all workers. “If teachers are forced to work without rights, what does that mean for workers everywhere?” she said. Platt said all the union wants is to be able to sit at

the bargaining table with the TDSB, but noted negotiations have been moving at a “glacial pace.” ETT vice-president Andy Lomnicki said the turnout from teachers was impressive but not surprising given what is at stake. He noted the union has received support from other labour groups and the general public. “I think a lot of people recognize this is an unprecedented attack and realize the implications of it,” he said. Ontario budget crunch He said Bill 115 marked the first time the McGuinty government has passed legislation of this sort, adding it gives the TDSB an out when it comes to negotiating. “To a certain extent (the TDSB) are hamstrung by this, but they’re using Bill 115 as an excuse saying they can’t negotiate,” he said.

Lomnicki said, despite the province’s budget crunch, there are plenty of items up for negotiation that would not require any extra expenditure, such as opening the transfer process, making staff meetings more inclusive and including language in the contract that states teachers’ participation in

extra-curricular activities is completely voluntary. Lomnicki said the union was set to meet with the school board yesterday, but noted the pace of negotiations to date imply the TDSB is waiting for the province’s imposed Dec. 31 negotiating deadline to pass. “Right now, it’s a waiting

game,” he said. “It seems like they’re waiting to see if there’s going to be a political solution to this.” He noted the union is hopeful an agreement can be worked out prior to the Dec. 31 deadline, or that an extension can be added to the negotiating window if a deal cannot be agreed upon.

“reckless overspending.” He said he will keep his council job, but will not draw a salary during a provincial election campaign many expect next year. “The current government, they’ve been so wasteful,” Cho said Tuesday, the day after he was acclaimed the PC choice for

Scarborough-Rouge River at a local community centre. ‘Last straw” “The last straw that broke the camel’s back” was Premier Dalton McGuinty’s prorogation of the legislature, he added. Before the meeting, Cho

acknowledged his Tory conversion would be “kind of a surprise to a lot of people,” considering he made his political debut in 1988 as a federal New Democratic Party candidate, then joined the Liberals after becoming a councillor in the former Metropolitan Toronto government in 1991.

He has kept a council seat in what is now the eastern half of Scarborough-Rouge River ever since. In 2004, he ran federally in the riding as an “independent Liberal,” but lost. A PC party press release Monday had Tory Leader Tim Hudak praising Cho “for his unwavering focus on reducing the size and cost of government and kick-starting the economy to create private-sector jobs.” That may surprise certain critics of Cho, a trained social worker who often rises to speak on behalf of the city’s affordable housing stock or on the importance of combating climate change. The right-wing Toronto Taxpayers Coalition gave Cho a grade of F on its most recent Toronto Council report card, saying he voted against an “assortment of costcutting measures.” Alan Sakach, a PC spokesperson, said Hudak’s “unwavering focus” comment reflected the committment Cho made when he approached the party. “He went through a very intensive process when he applied to be a candidate,” Sakach said. Sheppard subway Cho said he is encouraged by Hudak’s public stand in favour of subways, rather than the light-rail line now planned on Sheppard Avenue from Don Mills Station to Meadowvale Road, though the PC leader has not offered additional provincial funds to Toronto for subways. If elected and part of the PC caucus, Cho said, “I will insist that the subway should come all the way to Meadowvale,” but added, “I have to listen to the party leader.” The councillor’s nomination opens the way to a three-way race in the riding between Liberal MPP Bas Balkissoon, Cho and New Democrat Neethan Shan, who ran second against Cho in the 2010 municipal election and against Balkissoon in 2011 provincial election. Though not nominated yet, Shan, president of the Ontario NDP, said he plans to wage a pro-

vincial campaign should the opposition bring the minority Liberal government down. PC membership is “not reflective of what people thought Raymond is,” said Shan, but added he wasn’t surprised by the news. “The one consistent thing about Raymond is the inconsistency he’s had on the issues.” Balkissoon said he wouldn’t speculate on why Cho wants to run as a PC against him. “He’s entitled to run and that’s his choice,” he said. “We have different styles, all three of us.” Cho said he would attend important meetings as a councillor once an election is called, but maintained his status as a PC candidate will not change his behaviour at Toronto Council. Vote on issues “When I vote for important issues, I don’t vote according to ideology,” he said. Though he supports fiscal austerity, he said, he will not support a budget cut reducing the number of trucks at the Lapsley Road fire station in his ward from two to one. “Saving life is way more important.” Sakach said also that Liang Chen, an associate dean at University of Toronto Scarborough who ran against MPP Soo Wong in 2011, was ready to return as the PC candidate in the ScarboroughAgincourt riding. Her nomination meeting was set for 7:30 p.m. last night at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 614.

Brian Clarke has turned his childhood love of Lego into a holiday attraction. Interlocking brick by interlocking brick, he’s built Christmas Lego villages neighbours, friends and sometimes strangers in Scarborough’s Birch Cliff area clamour to see. Clarke started assembling villages in his mother Joan Clarke’s apartment living room when he was five years old, shortly after the plastic Danish brick sets were first sold in Canada. This year is the 50th construction - each one has been different - to go on display in that same living room. “Sometimes I have a plan, sometimes I

No doors and not much variety,” said Clarke, laughing. These days, Legos come in 50 colours, and Clarke, who has tried acquiring what collections he can, figures he has 170,000 pieces. Know those big boxes that can hold 20 packages of printer paper? Clarke’s legos can fill 27 of those. He doesn’t favour “kits,” those Lego sets issued to recreate moments in Hollywood movies and such. It would be more fun, Clarke said, to build an elephant out of blocks even if came out looking like a donkey. His annual creations are built in November and put away in January. “This is not my whole life,” he said. Some of his villages have recreated real places, some haven’t.

Carmelina Puopolo’s chance for a second consecutive U.S. collegiate national title came to an end in the second overtime of the championship game this season. But this month the Scarborough native did get some consolation: she was named the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II player of the year. Puopolo, a graduate of Scarborough’s Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary, was the top point getter in the country in Division II with 57 (on 20 goals and 17 assists). She was second in goals. Her College of Saint Rose team from Albany, New York fell just short of defending its national title, losing the championship game 2-1 to secondranked West Florida. An outstanding student as well, she was also named to the 2012 Academic AllAmerica team. She will suit up for her final senior year next season. At Cardinal Newman Puopolo was four-time team MVP helping her team to the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) championship in each of those four years. She played her rep soccer for Ajax Storm winning four Ontario Cup titles.

Council has never seen a year like this

here has never been a more interesting year in the history of amalgamated Toronto Council than 2012, and that’s saying something. Toronto, after all, has had some interesting times in its short history since megacity amalgamation took effect at the start of 1998. We’ve lived through epic corruption scandals, high comedy from goofball mayors, endless battles with the provincial and federal governments, riots and mass arrests, and stinky, stinky garbage strikes. But 2012? You have outdone yourself. Over the past 12 months, it has been a wild, realityshow-worthy ride: Toronto has seen nothing less than a seismic shift of power and influence away from a mayor who was just two years ago elected with a very powerful mandate. Mayor Rob Ford’s fall from grace, such as it was, was a constant narrative through the year – and not just because we scribes made it so. The year began on an

optimistic note, as the mayor and his brother, Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, started on what seemed like an easy, humanizing and healthful project, to drop a few pounds (well, 50) over six months. The mayor’s faltering diet and exercise regime would become an all-to-apt metaphor for his faltering control of council. In the early months of 2012, councillors took matters into their own hands. The 2012 budget was remade on the floor of council, to the mayor’s chagrin. And council didn’t stop there, voting to kill Ford’s dream of a subway to Scarborough and restore the light rail transit plan that he’d campaigned against. One could go on all column about the indigni-

ties that council heaped on the mayor’s office. But at least half of the fun of this reality show of a year comes from the mayor himself. As early as February, Ford sowed the seeds of what might be his political downfall, when he spoke and voted on an integrity commissioner report demanding he repay $3,150 in donations to his football charity. As a result, Ford finishes the year awaiting an appeal of a judge’s ruling that will see him removed from office if it’s upheld. In between February and today, the mayor’s been called to the carpet for reading while driving, chasing a reporter, and skipping council meetings to coach high school football, among other things. Budget tinkering results in two per cent tax hike DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s budget chief Mike Del Grande offered up some “tinkering” to the city’s 2013 operating budget — adding back some funding for children’s nutrition programs, the Toronto Botanical Gardens, local arts organizations and various other programs, to the

tune of $1,150,000. But the largesse comes at a price: $1.30 for the average Toronto homeowner next year, in the form of a two per cent property tax increase as opposed to 1.95 per cent tax hike. And Del Grande warned his colleagues if councillors try to add back anything more, he won’t be around to shepherd

the next two budgets through council. “If at the end of the day council wants to blow $25, $50 million more — I can tell you, guarantee for sure, they won’t have me again as the budget chair,” Del Grande told reporters following Monday’s penultimate budget committee meeting. The city’s capital and operat-

ing budgets will have one more go-around at the budget committee Jan. 8, before being sent off to executive committee and then Toronto Council for final approval. The $9.42 billion budget has been under consideration at the budget committee for about a month, and last week, more than 200 deputations came to raise various issues with

programs that had been flatlined or cut. Del Grande said he’d spent the weekend trying to figure out which of those requests could be accommodated, and how that might happen. He said his solution amounted to “tinkering” and dealt with various problems, at least in part. For instance, he will restore $300,000 in funding to local arts organizations in the city’s inner suburbs, and $30,000 to cash-strapped lawn bowling clubs. The Toronto Botanical Gardens had asked for $160,000 in funding to keep going; Del Grande offered $75,000. And he moved that the city report on ways to get revenue from the billboard tax into local arts programs. And he set aside cash for community partnership funding and the city’s priority neighbourhoods. To fund it, he said the 0.05 per cent additional property tax increase is the way to go. “I’m going against the grain of what the mayor’s request was, but I just can’t accommodate everything,” said Del Grande, who later

The budget, if we leave it alone now, will get us a lot closer to sustainability than we’ve ever been.” The amended budget will mean an effective 2.5 per cent property tax increase, because of shifts in tax burdens as a result of the latest round of MPAC current value assessment.

Following a recent investigation by Toronto’s ombudsman into how the TTC dealt with the issue of subway exits, the city’s transit agency says it will revamp the way it consults the public on construction projects. A new communications plan to address issues uncovered by the ombudsman related to a flawed public consultations process for a plan to add secondary exits at Greenwood and Donlands subway stations, was unveiled by TTC CEO Andy Byford at the commission’s final board meeting of 2012. “It’s a fresh start of this process,” said Byford. The new strategy was crafted in response to Ombudsman Fiona Crean’s recommendations from her investigation of the TTC’s second

exits public consultations in 2010. Anna Pace, the TTC’s director of strategic partnerships, said a new department will be dedicated to bridging the gap between the TTC and the community in regards to future projects. “We’ve bridged the gap between the project team and the community,” said Pace. “We’re the interface between the two.” The new group includes a community relations team to speak with local residents on construction projects; a communications team to provide general information of plans in plain language and through the use of infographics; and a third party to intervene in matters regarding property permits, approvals and expropriations.

hile much has been written about the Thomson Settlement, we are indeed fortunate that several of the most historic buildings have been saved from demolition. “Springfield Jimmie” Thomson’s lovely, bank farmhouse at 146 St. Andrew’s Road, is one of the oldest brick buildings in Scarborough and stands as a tribute to not only the Thomson family, but also to all our pioneers. The beautifully detailed verandah faces south and is quite visible to the public. It reflects the pride our early builders took in the construction of their permanent homes. The bank style also shows the builders’ respect and understanding of the environment. “Springfield” is built into the side of the bank of Highland Creek. While appearing as a two-and-a-half storey house on one side, it is one and a half storeys high on the opposite side. Only one level of this bank-style house was exposed to the cold north and west winds. The lower sections on the north and west sides of the building are beneath the ground. However, the warmer south side of the building has large windows which allowed the morning sun to brighten and warm the house during an era when electricity and central heating were visions of the future. Adjacent to the house stands a unique fieldstone cold cellar, also built into

Several years ago, the bank took possession and after a short period on the market it was sold to a contractor whose goal was to restore the exterior to its former glory, yet renovate the interior as a modern, highend dwelling. sale due to the high cost of renovation. This is a compromise that should guarantee that the 160 year old house will still be around 100 years from now. It’s now for sale to the right buyer, with a price of $1.7 million.

Just days after a gunman killed 20 children and six staff members at a school in Connecticut, Premier Dalton McGuinty was at a North York school to announce a locked-door policy for elementary schools in Ontario. “In the aftermath of that tragic event that unfolded in the U.S., I think there is am important question we have to ask ourselves. Are we taking all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of our kids at school?” McGuinty told a press conference in the library of St. Fidelis Catholic Elementary school in the area of Keele Street and Hwy. 401. The province will spend $10 million for elementary schools to install security devices such as video cameras and buzzers to let visitors in. All elementary schools in the province must have in place by next September a locked-door policy that will mean doors to schools are locked while children are in class, McGuinty said. “Now, we can’t, neither would we attempt to, turn our elementary schools into fortresses. We are not going to brick up these windows. That would be unreasonable,” he said. “I think it (the locked door policy) is an appropriate and reasonable response in keeping with what weighs heavily on the minds of parents.” In 2005, the province provided similar $3 million in funding for elementary schools to

install security measures if the front doors could not be seen from the office. About 850 schools took advantage of the program. There are about 4,000 elementary schools in Ontario and McGuinty said he now wants all of them to be eligible for funding. Improving safety McGuinty said the government is in a constant process of improving safety measures at schools. But he was clearly moved to beef up security measures following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut on Dec. 14. “What that event south of the border did was raise the question in our own minds as a government. Have we, in fact, taken all reasonable steps to protect the safety and wellbeing or our kids in school?” McGuinty said. Before the press conference, McGuinty visited teacher Luciana Di Nizio’s Grade 2 class, where he joined the children in making tinfoil Christmas tree ornaments. He asked the youngsters what they do to be nice during the year. “Help my sister get dressed,” one student said. “Help my mom,” said another. “Roast a chicken,” a third chimed in. Student Mike Tesi then asked McGuinty if he has been naughty or nice this year. “Mostly nice. Depends who you ask,” a smiling McGuinty answered.

Lawyers for Mayor Rob Ford have filed their factum to the Divisional Court, appealing the order to have him removed from office. The appeal of Justice Charles

Hackland’s decision to order Ford removed from office will be heard Jan. 7 by a panel of three judges. Ford’s lawyer Alan Lenczner is, as he indicated in court, appealing the decision on four grounds: first, that because council had no power to force the mayor to repay the money, the original council resolution asking that he do so was ultra vires — which is to say outside council’s jurisdiction. He will also argue the conflict of interest act doesn’t cover mat-

ters of the code of conduct for city councillors; he argues the conflict of interest act should only apply to matters whereby a municipality is in a relationship “whereby it stands to gain or lose a financial advantage. His third argument is that the sum of $3,150 ought to be considered insignificant. And fourth, he will argue that Hackland ought to have found that Ford at the very least committed an error in judgement in voting on the matter.
