The City of Toronto has shut down a mosque and Islamic school in mid-Scarborough with an order declaring the building unsafe.

The Sakinah Community Center houses the Farah Academy Islamic School in part of a Birchmount Road industrial building south of Ellesmere Road.

Posted on its doors on Friday, Jan. 29, the Order to Remedy an Unsafe Building states, among other things, the Sakinah Center lacks a fire alarm system and its sprinkler system isn’t working.

A few years after Kaye McCrone moved to Scarborough in 1953, a neighbour invited her to join a local bowling league.

And McCrone has been bowling in the same league ever since.

She celebrated her 90th birthday with her teammates at C4 Centre Bowling on Eglinton Avenue near Brimley Road on Jan. 20.

The mother of three, grandmother of five and great-grandmother of six credits bowling with keeping her fit.

Great to socialize “It’s exercise,” she said.

“You have a tendency to stay inside in the winter, but this gets me out of the house. And it’s great to socialize with the ladies.”

McCrone admits her age has affected her bowling abilities. “Your back isn’t the greatest, so it’s sometimes hard to bend,” she said, noting she used to be “a lot better” at the sport.

NBA All-Star KidsFest in Scarborough A pair of events in honour of the upcoming National Basketball Association AllStar game are set for Toronto this week.

On Friday, Feb. 5, the Scarborough YMCA hosts the BMO NBA All-Star KidsFest from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

The KidsFest will feature Jr. NBA Clinics and NBA Cares activities for all ages.

There will also be a youth arts program that gives fans a chance to design a canvas that will be displayed at this year’s NBA All-Star Game in Toronto.

Participants in KidsFest will also get a chance to see the Larry O’Brien Championship

Trophy, which is awarded each year to the NBA champion.

The Scarborough YMCA is located at 230 Town Centre Court.

On Saturday, Feb. 6, the University of Toronto’s Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport, 100 Devonshire Place, hosts the Bell NBA All-Star Challenge presented by Air Miles.

The event goes from 6 to 10 p.m., and will see the city’s best three-point shooters, dunkers and more at a skills challenge event.

NBA Hall of Fame member and 12-time NBA all-star player Isiah Thomas, along

with the Raptors Dance Pak, and The Raptor – the official mascot of the Toronto Raptors – will be on hand at both the KidsFest and the AllStar Challenge.

Kids fighting cancer now have something to smile about when they go for treatment at Centenary hospital in Scarborough.

The Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) hospital’s pediatric oncology clinic was transformed into an upbeat, fun-filled play zone, thanks to Smilezone Foundation and Hockey Day in Canada. The clinic’s waiting area, hallway, and two inpatient rooms were enhanced with bright colours and murals, and whiteboards for drawing. The waiting room now features table hockey, tablet gaming stations and couches, along with a television, kitchen, and more, plus some special decorations: signed jerseys and jackets from NHL players and broadcasters Glenn Healy, Nick Kypreos, Don Cherry, and Ron MacLean. Sensory toys were also added to the inpatient rooms.

The revamped clinic debuted Monday when hospital staff and patients joined Smilezone representatives and community members to celebrate its grand opening.

“Our son Gabriel was diagnosed with leukemia just over two years ago, and since then we’ve really spent the majority of our lives in a hospital setting,” said Whitby resident Gina Narvaez, whose son receives treatment at the clinic.

Along with eight-yearold Gabriel, Narvaez got the chance to provide input and feedback during the Smilezone design process.

“For Gabriel, this kind of a play area can be somewhere to go and be comfortable and just be a kid,” she said. “His

T.O. politicians know the price of a garbage strike

othing makes Toronto angrier than a transit strike. Well, almost nothing: transit strikes made Torontonians angry enough that in 2011 Toronto council asked the provincial government to declare the Toronto Transit Commission an essential service – same as police and firefighters – so we would never be troubled by wholesale transit service denial again.

In response to the 2009, 40-day garbage strike, Torontonians did something that was arguably even more radical, and elected Rob Ford mayor.

The lack of garbage collection for more than a month that summer infuriated residents. Parks were filled with stinking bags of garbage that only got stinkier in the heat, and the our view only thing worse than hauling garbage there was keeping it Less impactful festering in the yard. Toronto may well be heading for another job action if garbage strike in just a few unions strike weeks. But the city’s strategy in dealing with its two unions has made that eventuality less likely. It was a strategy developed under former deputy mayor Doug Holyday during Rob Ford’s otherwise tumultuous term of office. Rather than let negotiations poke along until the warm weather, Holyday and the city’s negotiating team set the strike deadline clock ticking in December and pushed hard until the end. The result? No strike, but a negotiated settlement. The only workers who walked off the job were from the library, and that strike was over in the blink of an eye.

Will it be the same in 2016? In some ways, the city is in an even stronger position this time than last because, since then, Toronto successfully expanded its contracted out garbage collection to about half the city. So if garbage workers do walk off the job, only Torontonians east of Yonge Street will be impacted. And unless the last half of the winter is truly balmy, the smell won’t be that bad either.

That’s a real incentive to CUPE Local 416 and Local 79 to make a deal, and probably offer up concessions to the city negotiators, to avoid a long and possibly not impactful job action. With all that said, the city could well be shut down later in the winter, with not just outside garbage collectors, but also unionized inside workers. And even without the stink... that eventuality will make everybody more than a little twitchy. Let’s hope that nobody does anything rash.

Toronto’s half-imagined transit future is not all bad Whatever you may think of the details, you’ve got to hand it to Toronto’s planning department and chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat for this achievement: the most completely imagined transit plan in recent memory.

There was one other: the OneCity Plan that former TTC chair Karen Stintz stitched together with the help of Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker that, in 2013, simply stitched together every dream project that caught their attention and put it on a map.

But that one, delivered to council in 2013, could barely stand up to a stiff breeze.

The plan that Keesmaat has put together and is completing is made of sterner stuff. The plan to make a one-stop subway crossing the gulf between Kennedy station and the Scarborough Town Centre is justified using economic development metrics rather than on a measure of local transit. The extended

david nickle the city Eglinton RT deals with the local transit needs along with a multi-station SmartTrack line running parallel. There will be more light rail in the west end, planners decreed, having looked with some rigour at Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack plan through Etobicoke and pronounced heavy rail there to be impractical. The light rail would provide more stops and therefore more localized service as it makes its way to Mississauga and the airport. As was reported last week, meanwhile, a downtown relief line coursing south from Pape station at Danforth and along Queen Street East past Toronto City Hall would deal handily with the growing congestion at the Bloor/ Yonge subway interchange.

The detailed justification of that plan will have to

wait until Toronto planners actually release the leaked report later in the spring, but the plan has a sense to it: Queen Street is already a busy streetcar route and Nathan Phillips Square is a focal point for the city.

So: a downtown relief line, a SmartTrack only slightly truncated, more light rail and a nominal subway in Scarborough.

If all that could somehow be built, to the specifications of the planners...well, Toronto would be in pretty fine shape.

That might be a trick.

There are engineering problems to overcome, financial hurdles to beat and the raw uncertainty of fickle Toronto politics.

Odds are good that some or all of this well-imagined future will not manifest.

More likely, it will be some of it. Two elements of this plan are particularly vulnerable: the one-stop subway to the Scarborough Town Centre and SmartTrack itself. In the

case of the former, the costs remain high to send trains to service a single stop. In the case of the latter, the realities of geography and engineering may make it cost prohibitive. It might be useful to imagine, then, a scenario in which those two elements are absent.

In the case of SmartTrack’s imagined demise, it might not be as bad as that: Metrolinx is still planning to expand GO Train service along that route. And if the subway vanishes – well, there are light rail plans on the book for linking the Scarborough Town Centre and Kennedy station. In the meantime, the plan would still encompass massive light rail expansion and a downtown relief line that would improve transit for everyone. As half-imagined futures go, it’s still not a bad one.

Transit Project Assessment Process GO Rail Network Electrification – Public Meetings Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is helping to transform the way the region moves by building a seamless, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

As part of this project, we are expanding GO Transit to enable 15-minute service on most corridors with electrified trains, which will enable faster and more frequent service. Together, these infrastructure improvements will change how people move around Toronto and the region with four times the current number of GO train trips, service on evenings and weekends, and twice the number of trips during peak periods.

Building on the GO Electrification Study completed in 2010, which looked at the electrification of the GO Transit rail system network, Metrolinx is currently undertaking environmental studies under the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08, to examine the conversion of several rail corridors from a diesel to an electric-based system. The project will include design and implementation of a traction power supply system (i.e. traction power substations and high voltage connections to Hydro One’s existing grid), as well as power distribution components (i.e. electrical power distribution facilities) located in the vicinity of the rail corridors.

The Study Area (see map) includes six GO rail corridors, including potential locations for the electrical power supply and distribution facilities: • Union Station Rail Corridor • Lakeshore West Corridor – Strachan Avenue to Burlington • Kitchener Corridor – UP Express Spur (at Highway 427) to Bramalea • Lakeshore East Corridor – Don River to Oshawa GO Station • Barrie Corridor – Parkdale Junction to Allandale GO Station • Stouffville Corridor – Scarborough Junction to Lincolnville GO Station A series of public meetings are being held as part of the TPAP process to provide information about the scope of the project, environmental studies, design and engineering components, preliminary locations for traction power supply/distribution facilities, project timelines and next steps. Centre was set to host conference on Saturday >>>from page 1 industrial. The centre, which was to host a World Hijab Day conference on Feb. 6, posted a message Friday on its Facebook page saying it would be closed for the weekend but people should stay tuned for more information.

“Thank you for your understanding and patience at this time,” said the posting, which as of Wednesday had not been updated.

Calls and messages seeking comment from Sakinah management were not returned.

The department would not say why it took action Friday, or whether or not it was responding to a complaint.

Michael Thompson, the local councillor, said he spoke a few years ago to an owner of the space at 1430 Birchmount.

More and more people are buying up the city’s employment lands for non-employment uses, “and that’s a problem,” said Thompson, also Toronto’s economic development chairperson.

“It’s not as if people are not aware of what they’re doing” when they buy such properties for places of worship, he said this week.

“They’ve just gone ahead and done what they want to do.”

The Scarborough Centre councillor said the Farah Academy had enroled 116 children as pupils.

“If they want to establish a school, I think that’s terrific. They have to find an appropriate location,” Thompson said. “I wouldn’t send my kids to

a school which didn’t have fire alarms or emergency exits.”

On its website, the centre describes itself as “a new multi-purpose community space which provides both members and casual users an opportunity to participate in a variety of religious, educational and leisure activities.”

The space, it adds, “is an astonishing 72,000 square feet and ideally located at a major intersection easily accessible by car and public transportation.”

Sakinah said its mandate, with “crime, drugs and an increase in highschool dropout rates affecting many within the Muslim community,” is to better address the community’s needs with social services, health and fitness activities and education in “an Islamic based framework.”

Many places of worship have already established themselves in industrial areas of Scarborough, but the city and councillors, seeking to keep “employment areas” intact, have taken an increasingly hard line against further conversions.

A church, Friends of Jesus Christ, bought a vacant warehouse on Nugget Avenue in 2008 for $1.8 million. Its application to rezone the property was denied by Scarborough Community Council.

The street already had a church and a mosque, but Friends of Jesus Christ was told Toronto’s industrial zones could allow places of worship only on major arterial roads, and Nugget wasn’t one of those.

Students welcome Syrian refugees with gifts Mary Shadd Public School students shop for supplies, decorate gift bags TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Scarborough students who raised money to make gift bags welcoming young Syrian refugees to Canada are hoping their actions will inspire other kids to lend helping hands as well.

Students at Mary Shadd Public School wanted to do something to help Syrian refugees, so they decided to raise money with a school dance to make welcome gifts for Syrian children settling in Toronto.

They chose and shopped for the supplies, decorated the gift bags, and included hand-written letters saying how grateful they are to have the children here.

Welcome to Canada “We wanted to welcome the Syrians to Canada,” explained Grade 7 student Karthika Nagarajah. “They’re going to have to learn a completely new language, a new lifestyle, but if we welcome them, I think they will feel like Canada is a home to them instead of an outside country, which is what everyone here wants the Syrian families to feel like.”

The school’s Grade 6, 7 and 8 students raised money with a December dance. Normally, money raised through the dance would support the Grade 8 students’ graduation trip, but the graduating class decided to donate this year’s proceeds to the young refugees.

“We’re really proud of them,” said teacher Sherene Quadir of all the students involved. “I think if our future generation is comprised of

kids like this, we’re pretty lucky. They have come here early in the morning, they’ve given up their lunch, recesses, in order to make this effort come to fruition.

Give back to children “They wanted to make sure they did something tangible, where they could actually do something rather than just giving money,” she added.

“They felt that the best way

was to give back to the children who have gone through quite a crisis.”

Recently, the students gathered for a social justice presentation before assembling the gift bags, which they gave to the Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office to distribute. Leading the presentation, Grade 7 students Pranitha Rathakrishnan and Prathusha Manmathan, and Grade 8 student Darin Satar, spoke about different people

in need of help in the community before landing on an image of Alan Kurdi. Alan, the young Syrian boy whose lifeless body was photographed by Nilüfer Demir and seen around the world after washing up on a Turkish beach, died when a crowded and unsafe boat his family bought spots on from human smugglers capsized in the Mediterranean Sea on route to Greece in 2015.

“This image was heartwrenching, it had a profound impact on many of us. The image was pivotal in our decision-making to help Syrian child refugees,” said Pranitha, adding, “We hope that our Syrian friends will be welcomed with open arms in Canada.”

Students decorated the gift bags before hand, colouring the front with “Welcome” and Canada’s maple leaf.

They took the bags down an assembly line, adding scarves, notebooks, pencils, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lip balm, toys, treats and welcome letters, before tying them with ribbon.

Many of the students at Mary Shadd P.S. are from families who understand what it’s like to start over in Canada.

“Our student population is predominantly Tamil,” noted Quadir. “Tamil refugees were also met with some trepidation, so they completely empathize with what the Syrian refugees are going through and they wanted to make a difference.”

New lives The students hope their gift bags will bring smiles and comfort to Syrian children transitioning to new lives in Canada.

“These kids are coming from a traumatizing event,” said Grade 7 student Vaishnavii Sridaran. “Nobody wants war in their childhood, and I feel very happy that these kids will get some help.”

Hoping to inspire other youths with their efforts, the Mary Shadd students started a social media campaign using the hashtag #KidsDoMakeaDifference.

Through the hashtag and their Instagram account, @ KidsDoMakeADifference, they hope to encourage and share charitable work and acts of kindness by youths.

“Kids can make a difference, and they will make a difference,” said Vaishnavii.

UTSC sets standard for higher environmental education The new Environmental Science and Chemistry Building at University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), where students will work on solving the world’s environmental problems, is itself the answer to a problem.

U of T wanted what turned out to be a very complicated, $65-million facility on its Scarborough campus to be built to the highest environmental standards.

“The design elements for this building use existing technology or were modified and expanded to meet our requirements,” Bernie Kraatz, UTSC’s vice-principal of research said in a release.

“More importantly, having both environmental science and chemistry under one roof will help with collaboration in addressing some important research questions.”

Climate change, groundwater pollution in urban settings, restoration of environmental systems, and rising sea levels are some of the pressing issues students and faculty in the new building might tackle in its laboratories.

Input sought on new Scarborough plans The TTC and Ontario’s Metrolinx agency have big transit plans for Scarborough and want to hear what residents think – again.

A year ago, a three-stop Bloor-Danforth Subway extension was planned to Sheppard Avenue, and there were open houses and meetings to help choose a route.

But “changing conditions” have changed plans for what a City of Toronto announcement calls “an emerging,

comprehensive transit network for Scarborough.”

Current proposals for the area call for SmartTrack stations along an enhanced GO Train service corridor, a one-stop subway extension to Scarborough Town Centre and a 17-stop light rail line from Kennedy Station to University of Toronto Scarborough.That last project, once called the Scarborough-Malvern LRT, is now called the Crosstown East because it’s an extension

of the Eglinton Crosstown line. People at two upcoming meetings can review plenty of display boards, question officials and leave comments on all parts of this proposed new transit network. The first meeting is on Feb. 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School, 959 Midland Ave. The second is on Feb. 27 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Dr.

TTC receives $50M to improve transit It’s not new money, but the TTC will receive $50 million from the city this year toward improving transit service.

Alongside T TC chair Josh Colle, Mayor John Tory announced this week the extra funding, part of a commitment of $95 million made to the transit commission in 2015. For this year’s budget, the TTC has had to trim $5 million from its operating expenses and suspend service expansions such as the Cherry Street streetcar.

Tory also promised to cut subway delays by half within three years. Last year, according to the TTC, delays across the network were down 13 per cent because of additional service, while customer satisfaction was at a historic high of 81 per cent.

York University’s City Institute is about to release a report, detailing the socio-economic barriers to transit access in the Toronto region.

Prepared by Sean Hertel, Roger Keil and Michael Collens, Next Stop: Equity seeks to determine just how easy it is to make use of transit,

particularly in low-income neighbourhoods. The authors spoke with transit riders, planners and writers – I was also interviewed – in determining recommendations for agencies like Metrolinx to address the ongoing concern of improving transit equity.

The report is expected to be released this week.

Large families victims of War on Car If there’s a War on the Car in Toronto, it’s one the city’s suburban councillors wage, in their own wards, on large working families in houses.

You can’t park on streets overnight in Scarborough or North York. There’s no permit parking, and local councillors have fixed it so you can’t even apply. This is called an “exclusion zone,” but where does it leave parents whose adult child, or student cousin or middle-aged aunt lives with them? In Scarborough, all the above will drive if they can. But where do those extra cars go? Not on the street, and not on driveways, many of which are too wide to be legal, whether their owners know it or not.

John Stapleton, a planner, says families leave their least-used cars at local plazas and malls, making it harder for local businesses, because parking lots are too crowded. “Tim Hortons is virtually empty because no one can park,” Stapleton warned councillors last year, when he called Scarborough’s

Usually in winter, but also at other times, I’ve heard from people who feel the city tickets their street unmercifully.

Some move cars in the middle of the night or sit in them between 2 and 6 a.m., waiting for parking cops enforcing the three-hour limit. Most Scarborough councillors reject any chance, however small, to give these residents a break, saying this would encourage rooming houses.

For them, roomers are a flag to wave in their single-familyonly neighbourhoods, the reason they don’t budge on any parking rule. It doesn’t matter that most people who live in rooming houses can’t afford a car.

Last month, Raymond Cho tried to take his ward out of the “exclusion zone,”

so, just maybe, people on certain streets could apply for permits, and get relief from tickets. Councillors wouldn’t have to approve any permits, but residents would have the same right as people living downtown, or in East York, to ask.

The rooming house crusaders refused. They tried their own experiment, removing the three-hour limit to allow instant tagging on streets around Silver Springs Boulevard in Jim Karygiannis’ ward from 2 to 6 a.m.

Karygiannis said this was to help the city plow in winter.

But he had colleagues expand the Dec.-1-to-April-15 ban to year-round, which brings us back to social engineering.

What does all this teach suburban homeowners, including many new Canadians, with extra cars? That the city’s bureaucrats are unreasonable and the politicians, however smiling, are not friendly.

I

t doesn’t look like much now, and may soon disappear, but in 1984 the Dragon Centre was a beacon bringing a new wave of settlement to Agincourt.

And the one-storey indoor mall was tearing the Scarborough neighbourhood apart, because it represented Chinese businesses some of the older, established residents didn’t want.

Tiny compared to the Asianthemed malls and plazas that would be built to its north, Dragon Centre, a 30,000-square-foot converted roller rink, was still blamed by locals for the traffic congestion in the area.

Still, the building on Glen Watford Drive was “the first Chinese-themed mall in North America” and prompted what became an exodus from Toronto’s downtown Chinatown, Arlene Chan writes in The Chinese Community in Toronto: Then and Now. Of course, Chinese people had other reasons for moving to Scarborough, whose Chinese population, Chan recounts, grew from 1,810 in 1971 to 117,405 in 2006, the former borough’s last census before its amalgamation with Toronto.

“For them it was a dream come true: they could have a large house, big backyard, two-car garage, and lots of open space.”

But in 1984, as the TTC was letting people try riding on the new Scarborough Rapid Transit line (sadly, still running), and the mall was advertising the car it would raffle

in a lucky draw, some neighbours fumed.

On May 28, 500 people, nearly all of them white, filled Agincourt Collegiate to discuss the problems they felt Dragon Centre and nearby Chinese businesses were causing.

The mall’s Chinese merchants were not invited, writes David Cheunyan Lai in Chinatowns: Towns Within Cities in Canada.

Accounts of the meeting record people shouting their refusal to allow bilingual street signs, which were never proposed.

Some suggested use of “restrictive zoning” or a development freeze as a way to “defend our interests.”

In early August, a flyer found its way into Agincourt mailboxes suggesting organized crime from Hong Kong and a new “open door” immigration policy were the real reasons behind Agincourt’s real estate boom.

Scarborough’s mayor at the time, Gus Harris had already been accused of ignoring racism in Agincourt, but this appearance of hate literature forced him to act.

A resolution by Scarborough councillors condemned the flyer, and Harris admitted there was a “serious racial problem” in Agincourt he would take steps to stamp out, The Scarborough Mirror reported on Aug, 22, “after intense pressure from Scarborough’s Chinese community and a meeting with (Ontario) Attorney General Roy McMurty.”

report of Harris’s Task Force on Multicultural and Race Relations in Scarborough released that December.

Today, the building near the intersection of Sheppard Avenue East simply looks tired.

Dragon Centre contains small restaurants and shops either half-empty or spilling merchandise into the hall, which forms a single loop.

On a snowy afternoon recently,

one store was selling five Phillipine movies for $10. A man sat at a table in the hall using scissors to clip the ends off pea pods.

Whatever its historical significance, the mall may vanish beneath another wave of development inspired by the Sheppard East light-rail line, though work on that project has been delayed.

The latest version of a proposal to replace Dragon Centre calls for

towers of condominiums, 31- and 34-storeys high, with a total of 640 units and an underground parking garage.

A petition from people of the neighbourhood in 2014 argued the proposal would “cause unacceptable negative impacts,” among them increased traffic and a loss of privacy.

There was nothing in the petition about saving the mall.

Film director Kristina Wong examines the Chinese-Canadian experience Angeline Mair amair@insidetoronto.com Kristina Wong is a Scarborough film director who uses her international award-winning work to examine the Chinese-Canadian experience while providing opportunities for females on both sides of the camera.

“I see myself pushing towards female teams and Asian-based stories,” she said.

This spirit fuels her filmmaking as she focuses on hiring women who are from minority groups to star in her films and work as her crew. “For my film I wanted to make sure my key crews were minority females,” she said.

Providing opportunities for women is helping break stereotype and prove that women have what it takes to make movies, whether as a director, cinematographer or as crew members moving around heavy gear, Wong said.

“Growing up in Scarborough everyone around me was very diverse,” said the fourth year York University film production student.

However, the Hollywood films she’d watched since childhood did not reflect her reality. “I found it shocking that I would make a film about a group I didn’t know anything about.”

This inspired her to create films

about her personal cross-cultural experience. “That’s why in this film, Knots, I wanted to do something Asian based, which is something I know,” she said.

The self-funded production resonates with many second generation Chinese-Canadians – especially those growing up in Scarborough – because of the language, identity and cultural barriers, said Wong.

At the same time, the motif of the knot keeps the generations together with themes of family, acceptance and crossing cultures.

Knots is the story of Scarlett’s Gong Gong, grandpa, who visits for her high school graduation. She must come to terms with the loss of her

mother and mend her relationship with her father.

“I explore different generations.

I can’t speak to my grandparents because I grew up speaking English.

It explores that element,” she said.

“Growing up that’s what a lot of my friends can relate too - not Hollywood.”

The film’s popularity has crossed local borders as it has been featured in film festivals such as the Phoenix Film Festival Melbourne, Black Bird Film Festival, Cinesiege 2015 (York University’s showcase of best student films) and Victoria Film Festival.

And it was at the Joey Awards where Nicole Samantha Huff, who plays Scarlett, won for best actress.

Wong said being born and raised in Scarborough helped set the foundation of how she views the world, however, it was her time at Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute where she started to learn the art of film.

Now at York University,. Wong has teamed up with fellow student Jessica De Los Santos. Wong chose to work with De Los Santos because of her Scarborough roots and that she went to Stephen Leacock Collegiate.

“In a strange way, just being from the same neighbourhood has been fundamental to our strong director/cinematographer relationship because we have the same mind set, we see the world from this east end perspective.”

hen the Year of the Monkey begins Monday, it will be welcomed in many different ways.

From food to firecrackers, Chinese New Year traditions abound.

To ring in the holiday, also known as the Spring Festival, people gather with family. “(In China), adult children would travel, oftentimes over long distances, home to visit their parents,” explained Ruoyun Bai, an associate professor at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, who specializes in Chinese media and popular culture.

“For migrant workers who work all year long in big cities, the new year is the only time they can reunite with their parents and children. Many cannot afford to bring their children to the city, so they leave them behind with the grandparents,” Bai added.

“Visiting relatives, no mater how distant they are, is important in the countryside. It is called ‘Bai Nian,’ or wishing someone a happy new year.

The new year is a special occasion like a major birthday celebration of a senior, a funeral, a wedding, etcetera.

If you do not visit your relatives, it will be considered an offence.”

Before celebrations begin, homes are cleaned to wash away any bad luck from the old year and make way for good luck to arrive. Brooms are then put away for a few days, to avoid sweeping away any good luck the new year brings.

People make sure to look their best for the holiday, with many getting new outfits and haircuts to prepare. Cutting your hair during the first part of the year is said to be unlucky, so it is important to get it done beforehand. New outfits and shoes are worn to symbolize a fresh start.

Traditionally, families exchange gifts and have reunion dinners, “Nian Ye Fan,” at home on the eve of the new year. Food is a big part of the holiday celebrations, with different dishes having different meanings, most encouraging luck and prosperity.

Dumplings are a new year staple in China’s north, partly because their shape resembles a sycee – an ancient Chinese currency made of gold or silver. “Nian Gao” or “Nin Gou,” a Chinese New Year cake made with sticky rice flour, is also popular in parts of the country. Fish is commonly served as well.

“Family dinners, and dinners with friends and former classmates, are integral to new year celebrations,” said Bai. “These days, young people simply go to restaurants for such purposes.”

Other traditions have changed with the times as well, she noted.

“New technologies have always been part of the evolving tradition of the new year,” she said, adding since the early 1980s when the Chinese state began broadcasting the Spring Festival Gala on Chinese Central Television, watching the gala has been incorporated into many people’s celebrations.

For the last couple years, users of popular Chinese messaging app WeChat have taken the tradition online. Using WeChat Wallet, which debuted in January 2014, people can now gift money online in virtual red packets, putting a modern spin on a traditional gesture. More than one billion virtual red packets were sent through the application last Chinese New Year.

In Canada, a modern Chinese New Year tradition is the unveiling of stamps, coins and commemorative items from Canada Post. The new Year of the Monkey collection will be Canada Post’s eighth installment of its 12-year Lunar New Year Series. The series started in 2009 with the Year of the Ox, after the original series that started in 1997 was completed.

Different parts of China have different new year customs, with rural areas more traditional. In urban areas, where people now buy new clothes on a regular basis, it is becoming less customary to buy new clothes in preparation for the new year.

Along with new outfits, there are many other “Nian Huo,” new year goods, to shop for during the holiday, including special decorations, flowers, food, and beverages.

“The new year holidays are also a good time for businesses, as they capitalize on people’s desire to spend,” said Bai. “Supermarkets

and malls are taking the place of temple fairs, ‘Miao Hui,’ as a central locus of celebration.”

The use of firecrackers, a holiday staple, has roots in Chinese mythology. A new tear monster called “Nian,” or Year, was said to visit and terrorize villages, eating residents.

People would leave food offerings for the monster in the hopes he would spare them and their families. After learning Nian could be scared away by loud noises, the use of fireworks began.

The colour red was said to repel Nian as well. Red, which also symbolizes good fortune, remains the main colour for Chinese New Year decorations and clothing.

These are just a few of the traditions and customs that help make the holiday the most celebrated in Chinese culture. Honouring gods and ancestors is also part of the festivities, which can take place for days, with some people celebrating until the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the year.

No matter how times and traditions change, Chinese New Year remains an important time for reconnecting with family and friends, feeding relationships and appetites, and sharing hope for the year to come.

Fly with Origami, Learn to Dream (UTFold) is an organization committed to introducing and promoting origami on and off the University of Toronto’s campuses.

Steven Chang is a second-year International Development and Environmental Science student at the Scarborough Campus of U of T and he teaches a specialty class at the downtown campus.

Chang has been doing origami for more than a decade, and has merged the art of paper folding with sculpture.

“In my personal work, I start with the idea that each model needs the right paper and the right ‘touch’ to really bring out the soul of any model I chose to fold,” Chang, 22, states in his bio on the UTFold website at https://utfold.com The only requirement for origami is a piece of paper, making it one of the most accessible arts. Like Chang, some origami artists experiment with other materials, and have folded models out of cardboard, various types of cloth, wire mesh, sheet metal, and even sheets of pasta. Chang likea to incorporate wire into his works.

“What I hope to teach is that origami is an amazingly diverse art with artists expressing their ideas in an amazing array of complexity – and often simplicity as well,” he says.

That probe found the man’s injuries were not a result of a collision, and the case was turned over to 43 Division officers for investigation.

Sidhu said that the occurrence is “considered a suspicious incident” and that police haven’t yet determined what caused the victim’s injuries.

Investigators are appealing to the public for help in solving the mystery.

or knows anything, please contact police,” Sidhu said.

Officers from 43 Division canvassed the community as part of the investigation.

Investigators also appealed for area residents with security cameras to come forward.

The lightness refers to their translucency, and how light reflects through them in different conditions. The shade samples do not correspond precisely to the outcome. This is due to the luting (gluing) materials that are used to make them stick.

The hue or shade is a personal preference, since the goal most often is to make your teeth whiter.

The new generation of veneers may last decades with proper nighttime protection and remember to keep in mind that they are not like your natural enamel, so certain forces can break them (biting into hard bread or veggies, other incisional movements). Normal chewing is fine.
