Scarborough-linked athletes ready for London Olympics Athletes with connections to Scarborough are gearing up for the opening ceremonies of the London Olympic Games today. Among the six athletes who have links to Scarborough competing in the Games, which open today and continue until Aug. 12, are four graduates of Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute.

Sprinters Justyn and Ian Warner, Aaron Brown and archer Crispin Duenas all attended the southwest Scarborough school that hosts an elite athlete program which draws students from across east Toronto and beyond. Other locally linked athletes in London are Crystal Emmanuel and Phylicia George.

Justyn Warner, 25, and his brother Ian, 22, finished one-two at Canada’s Olympic Trials in late June in the 100-metre sprints. Justyn is inked in for both the 100m race and the 4-by-100m relay while Ian is named to the relay team. The family has lived in Markham for more than a decade after living

National honours for Azerbaijan unhappy with Scarborough teacher ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

Scarborough MP

Kevin Hrycay hits the right notes with his students and their parents. They chimed in with 30,000 votes, placing the Scarborough music teacher in first place in a nationwide teachers’ competition. “There were parents who literally had giant group address books, so they would send out every day a hundred or two hundred emails,” Hrycay said. “I just can’t thank them enough. It obviously wouldn’t have happened without them, and I never thought I’d get over 30,000 (votes).” Hrycay, who teaches at Birch Cliff Heights Public School and Chine Drive Public School, came in first in Canadian Family magazine’s Great Teacher Awards competition. The magazine held an online vote to select the Top 3 teachers from 13 semi-finalists. The winners receive $2,500 each to use toward programming and supplies for their schools. Hrycay said he’ll use the money to buy music stands and perhaps some instruments such as trumpets, flutes and clarinets. The Guildwood resident volunteers more than 400 hours a year, mentoring teachers, fixing equipment and working with students on extracurricular activities. When he taught at Cosburn Middle School, Hrycay created an

A Central Asian country is accusing Scarborough MP Jim Karygiannis of crossing its border illegally to observe elections in a disputed region last week. “Mr. Karygiannis has breached the norms of international law and national legislation, and he became a persona non grata in Azerbaijan,” Farid Shafiyev, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Canada, wrote in a statement. The Scarborough-Agincourt MP was in Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnic-Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan which declared itself independent in 1990. Shafiyev said Canada does not recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent country and neither does the United Nations. Azerbaijan considers the enclave an occupied part of its territory and considers visits by foreign parliamentarians there “unfriendly acts,” said the ambassador, charging Karygiannis was “chasing ethnic votes and disregarding international law” when the MP visited at the invitation of the Armenian National Committee of Canada. “I presume that any elected Canadian official would not accept illegal entrance into Canadian soil by any of Azerbaijan’s members of parliament,” Shafiyev added.

extracurricular music program that attracted 300 students. Hrycay, who has been teaching for 18 years, received a total of 30,026 votes. Ramy Melhem, a Grade 3 teacher in Edmonton, came in second with 29,951 votes. Peterborough kindergarten teacher Janet Shillinglaw was in third place with 29,374 votes.

The voting took place between May 17 and June 30. The winner was announced in July. Hrycay noted that he treats his students like adults and tries to give them the confidence to succeed in what they do. “But the biggest thing is being there for them, listening to them,” he added.

Speaking Tuesday from Bulgaria, another stop on a tour that also saw him observe Libya’s parliamentary elections at the invitation of the Canadian Libyan Council, Karygiannis said he “won’t debate” the ambassador but considers Nagorno-Karabakh an independent state. “They’re an entity unto themselves,” said the MP, the federal Liberal’s multiculturalism critic, who said the only way to get into the landlocked region was through neighbouring Armenia. “These people are a democracy.” Observers from other nations and the European parliament were observing the elections too, Karygiannis said. He did not say his visit represented the view of his party, which is “supporting a dialogue” on the future of Nagorno-Karabakh. “It is time that the international community recognizes there has to be a negotiated settlement,” added Karygiannis. The Ottawa-based ANC of Canada offered thanks last week on behalf of Armenian-Canadians to Karygiannis for acting as an observer, “despite undue pressure from Azerbaijani authorities.” “We are heartened to hear that the government of Azerbaijan was unsuccessful in its attempts to thwart an international observers mission to this election,” Dr, Girair Basmadjian, the group’s president, said in a release.

Craft project helps brings seniors a sense of home LAURA BOOTH lbooth@insidetoronto.com George Garrett spent a large part of the last year building and furnishing a miniature Victorian farmhouse with fellow residents in senior longterm care at Leisureworld Caregiving Centre Rockcliffe in Scarborough. Every Thursday for the last year, Chantelle Gobeil of Chantelle’s Art on Wheels, attended the residence and helped the seniors build the house from the floor up. In total, about 30 seniors participated. The dusty-rose farmhouse is finely detailed with furniture made out of polymer clay. While many of the residents contributed to the house, a few individuals like Garrett, committed themselves to the project on a daily basis. A tailor in Ireland for “my whole life,” Garrett 76, was instrumental

in creating many of the house’s finer details. Although modest when he explains his contribution, Gobeil said Garrett was part of the core group of participants. Amazing things “He did some amazing things. In every group that I work with there’s a few people that bring what they did as a trade back to what we’re working on,” said Gobeil who has been running her business for three years. “George made all the cushions, all the curtains, he made beautiful wall-hangings out of material and floor treatments all out of material that he sewed.” In addition, George fashioned a four-inch three-piece suit, hats, and dresses for the house. The art project was recently show-

cased at the Art of Living Exhibit held at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Included were 72 pieces of art created by residents of 22 long-term care homes. On opening night, Garrett had the chance to walk the red carpet accompanied by his children and grandchildren, who he said were very excited to see his work. “The miniature house projects are all about reminders of home and remembering your favourite place you may have lived and sort of re-creating that so you have a sense of home in the place you’re living now. When elders are taken into long-term care, often they feel a tremendous loss of home,” said Gobeil. The residents have quickly moved on to their next project, a bright turquoise Victorian townhouse. Garrett said he is excited to get started.

Pity for city unwarranted

TAVIS makes true connection with community

P

ermanent funding for the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) must lead to high neighbourhood visibility. This week, following a meeting which included Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair and Mayor Rob Ford, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty pledged to provide permanent funding for the program. Since its creation in 2006, TAVIS has relied on funding extensions from the province to keep going. The program, run by Toronto police, was formed in 2006 in response to a sharp spike in our view gun violence the previous year in the city, combatting guns and gangs Permanent through rapid response teams. There’s also a neighbourhood funding initiative that focuses on specific areas of the city each summer. This just a start year, it’s operating in the Jamestown area of Etobicoke and the Jane Street corridor in North York. Last year, it was set up in the Brimley Road and Eglinton Avenue area in Scarborough, as well as the Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue area in York. That the TAVIS funding is to be permanent is encouraging news but it’s only a step. Toronto police must now seize the opportunity provided by this security and build on previous successes. The program has been credited with more than 19,000 arrests and the seizure of more than 1,200 firearms. Critics lament that neighbourhood challenges resurface once a particular program wraps up and the increased police visibility is reduced. While we understand TAVIS isn’t designed to involve a permanent stepped-up police presence, improving results in this area must be an ongoing goal. A successful program goes beyond arrest totals, and is one where neighbourhood residents take greater ownership and pride in where they live and feel more comfortable approaching law enforcement. It’s about nurturing a partnership. For police, this means clear reporting to community and volunteer organizations. At its best, TAVIS is more than a reaction; it’s an investment in a community. Last week, in the wake of a spate of fatal shootings across the city, we issued a call for increased visibility from both residents and police. Blair himself at a news conference yesterday, unveiled a plan for increased deployment of officers across Toronto. Ultimately, no matter how strong an initiative it is, TAVIS must continue to evolve and grow along with the specific communities it’s tasked with reaching. Doing so by increasing visibility at the neighbourhood level is a great place to focus. Only that way can a true community connection be forged. To the editor: Re: ‘Council’s decisions make Toronto a joke,’ Letters, July 19. Wow. The letter-writer’s Kingston family members feel sorry for Toronto residents. Council messes up for each of us some of the time, but they must have made some good decisions over the years for Toronto to have so much to offer. So Kingston, feel sorry for us for enjoying the following: One of the biggest and best library systems in the world; one of the world’s great multicultural cities; one of the top theatre centres in North America; a non-stop summer of amazing festivals; one of the world’s great film festivals; beautiful parks; sports teams to live or die with; Kensington and St. Lawrence markets; worldrenowned schools; an unbeatable assortment of restaurants; eye-catching architecture; and a waterfront that is finally coming to life. Olympic opening ceremonies are a capital idea

A

re you as psyched as I am for the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics tonight in jolly old London? What can I say? They always reel me in like a prized tuna. The best part of the festivities for my money is when the athletes enter the stadium. As soon as I hear each country introduced my mind goes into overdrive, just like it used to when I was in public school. Back then, whenever I heard a country name I would blurt out the capital city faster than Jesse James on steroids. I swear I knew every capital when I was a kid. (For the record, I swear I didn’t swear as a kid.) My favourite capital was Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. It was always my numero uno because it was fun to say. I still get a kick out of saying it. I also knew that the

but seriously

jamie wayne

capital of Paraguay was Asuncion and the capital of Uruguay was Montevideo and I never confused them. Today? The capital swagger is gone. With good reason. There are 204 teams in these Summer Olympics. How can I be expected to know 204 capitals when I didn’t know there were that many countries? There aren’t, as it turns out. There are actually only 196 independent countries. Three of them are newer and don’t have Olympic national bodies yet, so only 193 will be represented in London. The balance of the teams is made of 11 territories.

Needless to say, considering I didn’t know there would be 11 territories competing in London I couldn’t possibly know their capitals, either. There’s another reason remembering capitals isn’t as easy as it once was is because many capitals themselves are not what they used to be. There have been several capital city name changes over the years. I couldn’t tell you what they all are, I haven’t kept up. Still, I’ll give it my best shot Friday. Another area I’ll be focusing on is flag identification. I used to be pretty good at that, too. But, like capitals, many flags have changed. And, as usual, I’ll be testing my knowledge on national anthems. I like to see if I can hum the appropriate national anthem when each contingent of athletes walks in, but I seem to know fewer and fewer

anthems these days, also. Trying to predict who the flag bearers are for each country is always a good time, as is trying to pick out countries just by looking at the teams’ outfits. Lastly, I always try to see if I can come up with an official sponsor from each country – such as the Official Burrito of Mexico, the Official Souvlaki of Greece, the Official Pasta of Italy, and so on. One official sponsor I never have to guess at is ours. That’s because, unlike capitals, anthems and flags, it never changes over the years – the Official Excuse: Lack of government funding. n Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. He also took part in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. George, 24, won both the 100m and 100m hurdles at the Canadian Olympic Trials, but has opted to focus on the

hurdles in London. Although a Markham resident, she went to Scarborough’s Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School for her final year and ended up winning OFSAA gold in both 200m and 100m hurdles. Emmanuel, 20, will compete in the 200m in London after winning the event at the Olympic trials and finishing second in the 100m (behind Phylicia George), after bursting on the scene to

She graduated from East York Alternative School last year, but attended Vaughan Road Academy the previous year where she won a provincial high school gold medal in the 200m and bronze in the 100m.

Police

Chief to increase number of officers on city streets ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair is imposing mandatory overtime on officers this summer in an effort to restore a sense of safety in city neighbourhoods. The summer safety initiative was announced yesterday, 10 days after the mass shooting on Danzig Street in Scarborough that killed 14-yearold Shyanne Charles and 23-yearold Joshua Yasay, and injured two dozen others. “There has been a great deal of concern throughout the City of Toronto with respect to a recent increase in violent activity involving guns and gangs in our communities,” Blair said. “What we’ve announced today is additional resources, additional police personnel going out into our communities. Our intent is not to over police them, our intent is to over protect them.” The initiative runs Aug. 6 to Sept. 9. During that time, officers will be asked to work compulsory overtime, which will put an extra 329 officers on city streets daily. “We also want to send a very clear message to any individual or group

additional officers working in the downtown core in addition to 350 uniform officers in the parade. Festival organizers will also have their own security officers and parade marshals. $2 million

Sharon Shelton, executive director of Scarborough’s Tropicana Community Services, speaks at a press conference yesterday announcing a new initiative to increase police presence on Toronto’s streets in an effort to promote a greater sense of safety in the city following a recent surge of gun violence including a shooting on Danzig Street in Scarborough that took the lives of a 14-year-old girl and a 23-year-old man.

who may choose to engage in violence that puts themselves, others and their communities at risk that they will be relentlessly pursued,” Blair said.

Mandatory overtime will also be imposed on the weekend of the Caribbean carnival festival, which takes place Aug. 4. That will result in up to 456

“I believe that the preparations that we have made together can give great assurance to all who might attend this wonderful event that it will be safe,” Blair said. The summer safety initiative will cost about $2 million, but the money will come from the existing 2012 police budget. Audrey Campbell of the Jamaican Canadian Association said the program is about saving lives. “It’s important that people understand: the additional policing that you will see in our community is for your safety because good, decent hard-working citizens are caught in the crossfire and they are becoming the victims and the collateral damage of how these young people are resolving their disputes.” Campbell added social programs are also important to prevent violence. Sharon Shelton, executive director of Scarborough’s Tropicana

Community Services, also spoke at yesterday’s press conference. “We expect that the officers will conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful of the community members,” she said. “We ask the community to utilize this opportunity to empower yourselves by taking the lead and forming partnerships with the officers that will be visible in the community.” Deputy Police Chief Peter Sloly said the extra officers will not only provide enforcement but provide community mobilization. “We’ll be working in those communities with our partners, helping those young kids to do their best, to be their best,” he added. “On a daily basis, there will be continuous pursuit of our high-risk offenders and continuous engagement with our young people and our community partners in those neighbourhoods in the most respectful and development-focused way as possible.” The summer initiative is in addition to the TAVIS (Toronto AntiViolence Intervention Strategy) summer neighbourhood initiative which places more than 60 additional officers in north Etobicoke and in the Jane-Finch neighbourhood of North York.

Spooner, 21, who wrapped up a memorable U.S. colle-

based out of George Bell Arena in Toronto’s west end after the previous year playing out of the Mastercard Centre in

The search for your dream home ends here.

Condsiderations before moving Moving has been ranked among some of the most stressful events in a person's life. If you're considering moving this year, it pays to do your research and be aware of a few tips before beginning the process.  Narrow down your target area. Choose your desired area before you begin looking for houses. Things to consider in the area are the school system if you have children, proximity to transportation or employment, recreational activities, distance from friends and family, and any other factors that are important to you.  Get a pre-approval from a lender. A pre-approval will give you an estimate of what you can afford in a home and what a bank will lend you for a mortgage. This can help you narrow down your search for a home and figure out a budget.  Figure out your price range. Once you

have your pre-approval you can set your price range. It pays to be conservative when setting this range to ensure you'll have enough money after mortgage payments and utilities for the other necessities.  Decide on a house style. Some buyers prefer townhouses or condos because of their allinclusive nature. Others want semi- detached or completely detached.  Consult with a real estate agent. Real estate agents have access to up-to-the-minute listings of properties from all different real estate agencies.  Visit potential properties. You can save time by having an agent place you on an e-mail list that will automatically send you listings in your price range and area. This way you can narrow down properties based on features and even do drive-by visits before viewing the property if it seems promising. If you like a particular house, make an appointment with your agent to visit it.  Don't get discouraged. Buying and selling homes is a process. You may fall in love with a house only to lose the house to a higher bidder. Or you may find that the houses you desire are just above your price level. With time you will get a home that has much of what you want, even if it takes months to get there. –MS

BARB WAS OUR CHOICE!

Barb was our choice of agent for the buying of our new home and the selling of our long time family home. She especially stood by and guided us mentally, emotionally and physically through the steps during the preparation and selling of our home which was a large task because we were under a time constraint. She had the attitude that no job was too difficult and didn’t hesitate ‘to roll up her sleeves’ and pitch in to help us reach our desired goals. Barb’s professionalism is second to none. Guild Alive With Culture Festival this weekend MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The Guild Alive With Culture is back this weekend with art, music and the hope Guild Park is on its way back to being a centre for the arts year-round. Decades ago, the bluffside park and gardens on Guildwood Parkway south of Kingston Road was home to an artist colony and owners Spencer

and Rosa Clark, who saved fragments of Toronto buildings from destruction. MUSICAL PERFORMANCES The annual festival takes place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will features music from the Liza Williams Band, KlezKonnection, Gwood Band, Vintage Debris and

the Faith Gospel Troupe and performances from Hoza, Scarborough Music Theatre, Bollywood Dance Troupe and Hula-la! Aloha, organizers said yesterday in a press release. More than 50 vendors will demonstrate their art and sell their oil and watercolour paintings, fibre art, jewelry, photography, blown glass, ceramics, pottery and more, the release said.

This year, the Olde Stone Cottage Pub and Beer Garden on Kingston Road, owned by Guildwood resident Chris Short, presents a food concession and beer garden at the festival. CULTURAL PROJECTS The festival, presented as in past years by Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie and the

Guildwood Renaissance Group will again be held in the presence of the now empty Guild Inn, but plans are underway to renovate or replace the structure as well as to add cultural projects worth millions to the grounds. The Guild Park is located 201 Guildwood Parkway. More information on the festival is available at www, guildalivewithculture.ca
