Gypsy moth spraying on Friday
CLEARING THE BAR
Events listings / 15
Weather permitting, a twinengine helicopter will hover low over the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course on Friday in Scarborough to drop biological insecticide on masses of European gypsy moth caterpillars just starting to hatch. The City of Toronto says there is no cause for concern as the helicopter with an “ultra low volume spray system” flies close to the infested trees as possible at about 5:45 a.m.

Norm Kelly, the local councillor, said the targets are masses of larval moths in a strip of trees along Kennedy Road north of Sheppard Avenue and on some trees in the middle of the course. The spraying will likely close Kennedy for about five minutes, said Kelly, who shares the city’s conclusion the insecticide called Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurkstaki, or Btk, won’t harm humans or other animals who are exposed. “The spray has passed muster with the federal authorities,” Kelly said this week. Kelly said a second spraying will follow three to seven days >>>GOLF, page 10

A man faces child porn charges after photos of children were manipulated, making it appear as if the kids were performing sex acts. Police allege a man took pictures of young girls at local temples and shops and on the street. “The accused manipulated the pictures to make it appear that the young girls he had photographed were performing sexual acts,” Toronto police alleged in a news release yesterday. The sex crimes unit executed a search warrant at a Scarborough home on May 13. Gowthaman Saravanapavan, 35, was arrested Friday. He has been charged with making child pornography and possessing child pornography. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Toronto police sex crimes

Arrests made in school playground fire Three teen males have been charged in connection with a fire that destroyed a school playground. Police believe the teens wanted to have a campfire in the kindergarten playground outside Mary Shadd Public School on Hupfield Trail around 8:30 p.m. on May 6. But the fire quickly got out of hand. “They were playing with fire and it backfired on them,” said Det. Sgt. Mike Stones of 42 Division. “Their intent was to have a fire, not to cause the damage that they’ve caused.” Parents at Mary Shadd spent five years fundraising for the $20,000 kindergarten playscape, which was installed in late August. News of the blaze resulted in an outpouring of support;
more than $60,000 was raised within days, allowing for a bigger and better playground to be built. Two brothers, ages 18 and 19, and their 17-year-old friend were arrested Sunday, May 19, and charged with arson causing damage to property. Residents helped “I don’t think their intent was to cause the damage...but certainly the actions that they took, causing the fire, would constitute the act of arson,” Stones said Wednesday. Local residents helped police identify the alleged arsonists. One confessed during the investigation, Stones said. Police aren’t looking for more suspects. The three accused, who police say live near the school, are scheduled to appear in

Annessa Ali said she hopes to have the new and improved kindergarten play structure installed by September.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with the generosity of some of the corporations and just everyday Torontonians who have stepped up to our plight,” she said. “We are just very humbled and appreciative of all of the support that we have received.” The school has received $20,000 from Canadian Tire, $20,000 from the Kids in Sport Foundation and $10,000 from TD Bank. Ali said the school community is “delighted” that the police have made arrests in the arson. “This definitely will help the Mary Shadd community to heal from what has happened,” she said, adding “we have a sigh of relief right now.”

Hospital panel to hear from public at one-day session MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Next Friday, May 31, eight medical experts who can steer The Scarborough Hospital in a new direction will be at the Scarborough Civic Centre to hear from doctors, hospital employees and the public. But limiting speakers - all of whom must register before they arrive - to a single day isn’t sitting well with people who accused the hospital of conducting inadequate public consultations in recent months. Scarborough-Agincourt MPP Soo Wong said a oneday hearing doesn’t seem enough for the needs of Scarborough. “I hope that the panel decides to hold more public consultations, and that these
public meetings are held in the community at times and locations that are accessible to residents,” Wong added in a statement Wednesday. Facing budget shortfalls and a changing funding structure for hospitals, the TSH administration has proposed dividing surgical services between its campuses, concentrating complex operations at the General and simpler day surgeries at the Birchmount, while merging its Maternal Newborn and Child Care programs into a single centre at the Birchmount. Complaints by Wong, Scarborough-Rouge River MPP Bas Balkissoon, hundreds of TSH physicians and several residents prompted the Central East Local Health Integration Network to stop these changes and order the

panel review. On Wednesday, the hospital named Dr. Paul Ellis, an emergency physician at downtown Toronto’s University Health Network, as the panel’s eighth and final member and posted biographies for other panelists at www.tsh.to/pages/ Expert-Panel-Review The panelists must weigh risks in the TSH proposals and deal with concerns they cause. For example, merging MNCC at the Birchmount campus removes all pediatricians from the General, where every fifth emergency department patient is a child. Pat Sherman, a member of Friends of The Scarborough Hospital said his community group is torn on whether to participate on May 31, “blessing a process that we don’t
agree with.” The LHIN promised the panel would see “active involvement” from the community, but instead offers a chance for “token feedback” during a day when most people are at work, said Sherman. “Where can we have any confidence that they really care?” Only one panel member, Odette Maharaj of TransCare Community Support Services, appears to be from Scarborough, Sherman added. “There’s nobody that can actually speak to the demographics of the community and the special needs of the community.” Announced weeks behind schedule last Thursday, the panel faces a tight timeline, being scheduled to deliver findings to the TSH board on

Scarborough Community Council will hold a rare evening session in September to consider a rezoning and development proposal in the West Rouge area. Community councillors agreed to discuss the application by Your Home Developers at a special 7 p.m. session on Sept.10 after Moeser said a large number of residents will want to attend. Weekend event an invitation to connect
T
he annual Doors Open event takes place again this weekend giving residents across the city access to culturally significant buildings within their own neighbourhood. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn more about the community by visiting the 150 local buildings with historical, architectural and social significance selected this year. Visit Applewood, The Shaver Homestead in Etobicoke, which is an example of a typical 19th century farmhouse. In North York, the Gibson House Museum built in 1851 in the Georgian Revival style of architecture will be open to visitors. Or step inside Fool’s Paradise, the former home of Canadian artist Doris McCarthy situated on the 12-acre property on the Scarborough Bluffs, which she bought back in 1939. New venues include the Toronto Police Service 11 Division building built on the site of the historic 1914 Carleton Village Public School. our view Scarborough Arts is also welcoming visitors to its current home in 1920s house in Harrison Estate Opportunity aPark. to learn about But Doors Open is more than just about exploring old buildings community for the first time. The weekend event allows residents to better understand the history and fabric of their own community. For example, the interfaith communities of South Etobicoke have come together allowing residents to explore the diversity of faith communities by opening its doors to such buildings as the Bosnian Islamic Centre, Mimico Baptist Church and the Canadian Sufi Cultural Centre to name a few. The theme of Doors Open this year being “Creators, Makers and Innovators” also features many older buildings that have been “redesigned, reinvented and repurposed into modern 21st century spaces that host collaborative teams of imaginitive people who are creating new ways of thinking, making and doing.” It’s an exercise the whole community can be a part of beyond the Doors Open event where people can challenge themselves to view where they live differently and contribute creatively to make a positive impact in their neighbourhood. Start this weekend by taking a look inside those buildings you might normally walk by every day. Doors Open runs from Saturday, May 25, to Sunday, May 26. Visit the city’s website at www.toronto.ca/ doorsopen/2013/ for a full list of venues and the specific hours open to the public.

Practical solutions needed Metrolinx letter was an insult to Scarborough
To the editor: It appears that as a byproduct of the recent Toronto council discussion on transit funding, the residents of Scarborough are being portrayed as narrow-minded. Simplistically, we will vote for anyone who promotes a subway extension into Scarborough. We don’t seem to know or care that this is unlikely, or that there are other workable plans to improve public transit already in place from which Scarborough will
largely benefit. Scarborough, aren’t we better than that? Let’s make sure our elected representatives know that we want practical transit solutions, not pie-in-the-sky promises or attempts to make the “other guy” pay (especially since the “other guy” is usually us; we end up paying one way or the other). If we don’t, we will get the city we deserve - a city on its way down. Louise O’Neill
To the editor: Re: ‘Metrolinx CEO comments on transportation plans,’ Letters, May 16. The letter by the Metrolinx CEO completely ignores the families of Scarborough. In his all-encompassing letter, as published in The Scarborough Mirror, a subway is noted. This is the downtown relief line in area well-serviced by streetcars and buses. There is no mention of a subway extending from Kennedy and Eglinton through the Scarborough Town Centre to the Pickering Town Line. The letter is an insult to the hard-working, taxpaying people of Scarborough. George Heighington
Worried about vision loss? Get regular eye exams May is Vision Health Month and according to CNIB research, Canadians are more afraid of losing their eyesight than almost anything else. Given that one in seven of us will develop a serious eye disease; it’s a fear that’s certainly not unfounded. Fortunately, 75 per cent of vision loss can be pre-
vented or treated and there are many things we can do to prevent blindness and vision loss. The most important step is to get regular eye exams by a Doctor of Optometry. The problem is that many Canadians aren’t getting their eyes checked as often as they should because they think their eyesight
and their eye health are the same thing. They’re not. 20/20 vision and eye disease are not mutually exclusive. The reality is that many eye diseases have no symptoms in their early stages, so someone may not realize they have an eye disease until it’s too late to get treatment that could save their sight. That’s why
it’s crucial to have regular, comprehensive eye exams, regardless of how old you are. In recognition of Vision Health Month, we recommend people take action for their eyes and book an eye exam today. Dr. Keith Gordon Vice President, Research, CNIB

Ford Nation needs to call it quits
T
he trouble with writing a weekly column that appears on Thursday, is that when a mayor finds himself in allegedly hideous and frankly filthy trouble on the previous Friday, it’s tough to find something new to say. So it is with Mayor Rob Ford, and revelation last Friday of the cell phone video that according to two respected journalists at the Toronto Star alleges to show our mayor smoking crack cocaine. Earlier in the cycle, I might have joined the chorus of every other columnist working in Toronto media, and said it was time for the mayor to resign. I’ll take a slightly different tack, and speak directly to Ford Nation. It might be time, Ford Nation, to call it quits. Regardless of what happens with the video, it has come time to face some facts.

david nickle the city The mayor, when you elected him, came with a certain amount of baggage including a 1999 impaired driving conviction in Florida. There was a certain amount of baggage that you were willing to forgive, because you are a forgiving bunch. Give up on forgiveness Some commentators say, in fact, that Rob Ford’s foibles have been a part of his charm to Ford Nation: that it shows him to be a regular guy, a guy that sometimes screws up, and not one of the elites. It is time, Ford Nation, to give up on forgiveness – at least inasmuch as that forgiveness translates to continued fealty, and worse, identification. Because Rob
Ford is not like you. You do not leave important work meetings to coach football; you don’t court disaster by ignoring potential conflicts-ofinterest in your job. You don’t, as a rule, embarrass yourselves, your family and your community. You are stand-up people, and you don’t need to stand up for this. In giving up on forgiving our mayor, you need not give up on the agenda he ran on. There are other good fiscally-conservative politicians in the wings – many of whom have assisted in our mayor’s fulfillment of his agenda this term. In 2014, you will likely have the opportunity to support one or more of them to continue that agenda. Call this, Ford Nation, your moment of clarity.

Golf course to be sprayed >>>from page 1 afterwards. The city-owned course is the only area in the city’s east-end which must be sprayed from the air. Btk kills the young gypsy moth caterpillars after they eat it.
The city suggests residents near the course could cover patio furniture or outdoor play areas before the spraying, or hose them down afterwards, if they want to avoid exposure. People can check for
updates on the spraying or get more information by calling 311 or visiting www.toronto. ca/trees/gypsy-moth.htm

Councillors want city to demolish burned out Chancellor Drive house Scarborough councillors are hoping the city can demolish a Woburn-area house that was burned in a fire, whether the house’s owners agree or not. A two-alarm fire on March 4, 2012 - its official cause is still undermined - heavily damaged the house at 9 Chancellor Dr., near Ellesmere Road and Scarborough Golf Club Drive. Glenn De Baeremaeker, the local councillor, said at
a Scarborough Community Council meeting last week neighbours of the house “have safety fears about whether it will burn down again” and added the property’s owners weren’t returning his calls. ‘WIT’S END’ “We’re just at our wit’s end trying to get a resolution at this site,” said De Baeremaeker, who got colleagues to direct the city building department
to “review the condition of the property” in order to see if the derelict house can be demolished and the lot cleared. Another councillor, Ron Moeser, said there is a precedent for having a damaged house torn down at the city’s cost, and having that cost attached to the property. Scarborough Community Council asked for a report on the issue to be presented at Toronto Council during a June 11 meeting.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Nita Edith Ludlow celebrates her 100th birthday on Saturday at Leisure World in Scarborough with several generations of her family. Ludlow was born in Toronto in 1913 where she lived until she and her late husband, Norman, retired to Lindsay. She returned to Scarborough in 2005.

One in three Canadian kids are left on the side of the rink In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers (Vision Critical 2011). Six years ago, Marlee Stein wanted to learn to skate, but she didn’t think it would be possible coming from a family of four kids and facing the struggles of a parent battling illness. Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance. A year after lacing up her skates for the first time, Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal – to one-day join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream. “Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” says Marlee Stein.
“With all the lessons I have taken, I hope it opens up opportunities to eventually become a part of the Canadian Olympic team.” “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives,” says Johnny Misley, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can simply participate, and ultimately pusue their dreams.” Kids who are able to participate in organized sport and recreation,
outside school hours, gain many short and long term benefits including increased self esteem, greater self confidence, leadership skills, and better grades. Despite the financial hardships many Canadian families face, there is a way to get kids into the game, no matter what barrier. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped 570,000 (and counting) children like Marlee participate in the sport of their choice. Help kids from your community by visiting Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s and Canadian Tire Gas+ stores as well as Pita Pit locations throughout the month of May to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball, with 100 per cent of all donations going to help kids play. The May campaign will be celebrated on Jumpstart Day on Saturday, May 25, with fun activities taking place at participating Canadian Tire Retail stores across the country, including charity barbeque’s or GoClean waterless car washes. Visit jumpstart.canadiantire.ca to learn more.

Patience pays off for Scarborough’s Toffoli, scores first playoff goal NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Patience has paid off for Scarborough’s Tyler Toffoli, a former Birchmount Park Collegiate student, who racked up his first playoff points – a goal and an assist – for the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings last week. This week, however, the story was the point the 21-yearold rookie didn’t get. In Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks, which evened up the second-round, best-of-seven series at 2-2, Toffoli had a goal called back on what Los Angeles thought was an early whistle. Trailing 2-0 in the second
period, Toffoli redirected a pass that went though the pads of Sharks goalie Antti Niemi and eventually trickled past the goal line (helped along by teammate Dustin Penner). PLAY BLOWN DEAD But the ref had already blown the play dead and Los Angles had to wait until midway through the third period before cutting the gap to 2-1. Toffoli’s first ever post-season goal came during gamethree last Saturday – the only goal for the Kings during a 2-1 overtime loss. And his first ever postseason assist came during
game-two last Thursday – setting up the winning goal in a 4-3 comeback win. SIX PLAYOFF GAMES He has now suited up in the Kings last six playoff games after being a healthy scratch for their first four playoff games (the Kings won their opening round series 4-2 over the St. Louis Blues, led by fellow Scarborough resident Chris Stewart). The series continues tonight in Los Angeles. Toffoli got his start in hockey with the Scarborough Hockey Association.

Two community meetings are scheduled to discuss building sidewalks on streets in the Birch Cliff area. Residents are invited to Cliffside Public School on East Haven Drive next Wednesday to discuss how sidewalks could make the area around the school safer for pedestrians. A five-year-old girl walking home from Cliffside Public School, Kayleigh CallaghanBelanger, was killed in a road accident in March. Toronto Council last month asked city staff for their recommendations on installing sidewalks in the school’s catchment area. Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford said staff at the meeting, which is from 7 to 9 p.m., will be able to say when they could be installed next year.
A second gathering on June 10, at Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic High School on Brimley Road South, is aimed at residents of Chine Drive. Some homeowners on the street south of Kingston Road, which has unpaved shoulders, did not want a partial sidewalk called an elevated stamp built during a planned reconstruction, saying it would harm trees and wildlife. Residents appealed to Ontario’s environment ministry in hopes of receiving an order for an in-depth environmental assessment of the Chine project. Crawford said the minister, Jim Bradley, has decided such an assessment isn’t required and that the work can begin. The June 10 meeting, a
“final community information session,” also runs from 7 to 9 p.m., Crawford said last week. Karnival set to begin wKonkel’s
Konkel’s Karnival, hosted by Chuck Konkel who is the federal Conservative Party candidate of record for the Scarborough-Guildwood riding association, is set to open this evening. The carnival will run from May 23 to Sunday, June 2. The hours will be noon to 10 p.m. daily, except for this evening which will be from 6 to 10 p.m. The carnival is located in the parking lot of the Metro at Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue. This is the third year for the Konkel’s Karnival event in the community.

Police, Emily Carr students in the same boat ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
Police from 42 Division and students from a Scarborough school are in the same boat. Literally. The police officers and kids are taking part in a sixweek boating course at the Bayside Rowing Club on Commissioners Street. T h e p ro g ra m , w h i c h launched last week aims to break down barriers and create friendships. Twenty students from Emily Carr Public School, on John Tabor Trail, are taking part. “It just gives the police a positive opportunity to be able to interact with young people in an environment that is definitely unusual and unique,” said Const. Jaime Knox of the 42 Division community response unit. “So it’s different and cool for the kids and for us... Hopefully, we’ll get to build a relationship with the kids.”

Grade 5 student Princy Samuel said rowing was fun and challenging. “It took a lot of effort and teamwork,” she added. The course runs every Tuesday for six weeks. “(I’ve) never been boating before. This was my first time,” Princy said. “I would love to do this again.” Dominic Kahn, head coach at Bayside, said the club was formed 20 years ago to expose inner city youth to rowing. “It’ll challenge those kids, and I think in the long term it’ll change our city.”

Great Strides Walk slated for Sunday at Toronto Zoo The annual Great Strides walk in support of cystic fibrosis reasearch is slated for this Sunday at the Toronto Zoo. Local residents are invited to help out the St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre on
Saturday, May 25, for the Scarborough facility’s Annual Neighbourhood Walk for Seniors. The event takes place between 10 a.m. and 1p.m. and will include a free barbecue for all walkers, as well as amazing prizes and fun entertainment. The walk begins and ends at the centre, which is located at the southwest corner of Warden and Finch avenues. The walk route follows Bridletowne Circle, which wraps around the intersection. Money raised will go straight to the local community, helping seniors in financial need to receive grants and bursaries for essential services. The community is asked to help the centre raise enough funds to give seniors in need hot meals, transportation to medical appointments and help in the home. To register, or to donate, please visit www.splc.ca/ walkforseniors/
St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre provides a broad range of services and programs to address health, wellness, transportation, housing, financial and social needs for area seniors. Off-leash input sought by city The City of Toronto is asking residents this month whether dogs should run free in some parks during early morning or late night “courtesy hours”. There are a number of fenced off-leash areas across the city, but their distribution is uneven. Councillors on the parks and environment committee voted last November to investigate a new category of off-leash opportunity for dog owners, “courtesy hours,” which would not occur in parks where fenced dog areas exist. The city has posted a survey at www.toronto.ca/parks/ engagement/offleashparksurvey.htm it says residents can fill out until May 31.

Student film Places Everyone to hit screen at R. H. King A local high school launches its short film this Friday evening. Students from R.H. King’s arts management class have created Places Everyone, a short film dealing with themes of self-esteem, individuality and arts education, which they are sharing with students in grades 7 and 8. The arts management students focused the 25-minute
piece on themes they wanted youth, who are entering high school, to know about. Places Everyone follows a group of teens as they attend a local arts camp and navigate the challenges of a high stakes production. Respect and teamwork eventually win the day when a choreographer is injured and the teens realize the production can only succeed with
everyone’s contribution. The film is written, directed, filmed, edited and packaged by the arts management class. Free admission. Refreshments will be available. Places Everyone hits the screen at R.H. King Academy, located at 3800 St. Clair Ave. Heritage Room, Floor D, at 7 p.m.

Buy an energy efficient home without breaking the bank Save thousands over the life of the average mortgage Roughly 200,000 Canadians will buy newly built homes this year. What these prospective owners might not know is that on average, green homes cost only between one and two percent more than a traditional home. They also cost less to operate and have better indoor air quality lending to less illness and respiratory problems - all while having a positive impact on the environment. How much can a homeowner save each year with an energy efficient choice, such as a LEED certified home? In Ontario, new owners can save on average $900 a year on water and energy bills for a 2,000 sq.ft. detached home. This represents $22,560 over the life of an average mortgage – a sizeable savings. Some insurance companies also offer up to 10 per cent discounts on these types of homes, and owning one may increase your property's value. Save enough on monthly bills to spend your hard earned cash on more important things, like paying off your mortgage a year or two early. – newscanada.com
Realtors release mid-month report Greater Toronto Area realtors reported 4,476 transactions through the TorontoMLS system during the first 14 days of May. This result represented a decline of 9.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2012. Sales declines were larger for the City of Toronto, at 11.4 per cent, versus the surrounding regions where sales were down by 8.6 per cent yearover-year. “Despite fewer sales this year compared to last, competition between buyers in most segments of the market remained strong enough to promote annual rates of price growth above the rate of inflation,” says Toronto Real Estate Board President Ann Hannah. “A household earning the average income in
the GTA can comfortably afford the mortgage payments associated with the purchase of an average priced home.” The average selling price during the first two weeks of May was $543,838 – up by 5.4 per cent in comparison to the same time frame last year. Price growth was strongest for low-rise home types, but positive price growth for condo apartments in the City of Toronto was also reported. “Continuing the prevailing trend over the last year, the low-rise segment of the market drove overall price growth during the first half of May, as months of inventory remained below historic norms for key home types,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. – TREB

Walk of Fame makes Still waiting for plans local resident proud on use of Guild Inn To the editor: I would like to thank The Scarborough Mirror, the media partner, and the others who made the Scarborough Walk of Fame Ceremony possible. The ceremony highlighted the achievements of seven inductees who made positive contributions through their work in the community, arts and culture and sports. Although their fields of endeavours were diverse they seemed to share a common bond of the importance of supporting one another. We e v e n d i s c ov e re d that Jim Creeggan of the Barenaked Ladies was a trail blazer in another unexpected pursuit – recycling. T h i s e ve n t , l i t e ra l l y, brought home the message that Scarborough is a place to be proud of growing up and living in.
To the editor: Some suggestions have been made for usage of the Guild Inn grounds - fire pits; bake ovens for bread; and a tandoori oven. My question is who will clean up after these events? Will an extra charge be added to the rental fees for clean up?

Ideas are wonderful, but when would they occur? There was talk a few years ago of plans to add an addition to the office building for an artists’ studio. We’re still waiting. I look forward to something being done to bring the arts back to the Guild. Carole M. Lidgold
Implement fee for bus bike racks To the editor: Re: ‘Where would bikes go if not on racks,’ Letters, May 14. I have been following your letters on TTC bicycle racks. I would like to add my comments. I am a frequent bicycle rider, riding five kilometres to work each day. Letter writer David Louie implies the installation of bike racks
PERFECT matcH! Why use HomeFinder.ca?
The gardens should be a place for the arts, a place to sit in quiet contemplation. Several of the suggestions are useable ones. An orchard would be great. A native flower garden would be great in the location where there was once a vegetable garden, across from the office building.
on buses is a relatively inexpensive ordeal. I beg to differ. I would suggest the actual cost to purchase and install would be in the range of $800 to $1,000 or more. Considering the number of buses, that would be a significant amount. Minimal use of the racks puts the cost per usage quite high. As the previous
writer noted, the TTC is always asking for more, but gives little accountability of expenses. Was there any thought of user fees to offset the cost of bike racks? Accommodation of strollers does not create added expense to the bus as bike racks do. Jim Watson

Toronto says no to casinos DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com An expansion of casino gambling anywhere in Toronto is no longer in the cards, after council voted to reject both a downtown casino and expansion of the Woodbine Racetrack into a full-blown casino in north Etobicoke. Council made the decision after a relatively swift debate at a special meeting Tuesday. Mayor Rob Ford had attempted to cancel the meeting late last week, declaring a downtown casino dead, but 24 councillors pushed to hold the meeting anyway, to settle the matter. At issue for both Ford and opponents of the casino was the amount of the provincial hosting fee. Ford and casino supporters had said that Toronto needed a minimum of $100 million annually in hosting fees to host a major casino. But the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation
“
We carried the load and did a lot of the hard work. It now appears that Premier Wynne has chosen a different direction. – Mayor Rob Ford
only offered a total of $65-70 million for a downtown casino. Ford moved a motion that would cancel the downtown casino, but keep the ball rolling on letting the province establish a second casino at the Woodbine Racetrack. He rested the blame for the failure of the downtown casino on the shoulders of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. “One year ago the government of Ontario asked Toronto to host a new casino in this great city,” he said. “Since then Toronto has spent a year grappling with the issues. We carried the load and did a lot of OPEN HOUSE SAT/SUN 2-4PM

the hard work. It now appears that Premier Wynne has chosen a different direction.” He continued, “I will not support a casino that is not in the best interest of Toronto. Hosting a casino in Toronto that does little to address Toronto’s needs and makes the provincial government richer is not in the interests of Torontonians.” Council rejected Ford’s motion, with a vote of 13-31, instead supporting Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton’s motions that would reject a new casino downtown, and oppose gaming expansion in the C2 zone where the Woodbine Racetrack is located. That last vote carried by a narrower margin — 24-20. Nick Eaves, President and CEO of Woodbine Entertainment, said the vote was disappointing. Wo o d b i n e f a c e s a tough time, he said, if the province locates its casino outside Toronto
in Markham or Vaughan. That would create a competition that the racetrack couldn’t necessarily meet without its own tables and slot machines. “We had over 200 people here showing their support,” said Evaves. “We sent 600 letters, there’s a petition signed. I feel most badly for those people whose jobs depend on Woodbine’s racetrack.” L a y t o n , h o w e v e r, pointed out that council’s rejection of gambling was a matter of principle — and noted that Woodbine would be able to maintain its existing operations. “The motion put forward reflects that this wasn’t just about a hosting fee — this was about the impact on the citizens of Toronto,” he said. “We don’t want the province to put forward a policy that encourages more people to become addicted to gambling.”

Treverton Park playground seeks kids’ ideas MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Children of Treverton Park, if you ever said your neighbourhood playground was lame and thought it could be way better, here’s your chance. Plus, you could be on television. Giver, a show on TVO Kids
(www.giver-tv.com) is looking for boys and girls, aged seven to 13, from Treverton who are “full of creative ideas” and “not afraid of hard work.” They are going to completely rebuild the playground, starting at a design meeting this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. It’s a great way to get young
people involved, Michael Thompson, the local councillor, said this week. In need of change The playground, along a set of crescent streets off Treverton Drive, northeast of Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue, “has been there since
I was a boy” and is in need of a change; its equipment is old, said Thompson. A Children’s Aid Society of Toronto building is also next to the park at 843 Kennedy Rd., and the playground is used by children in care. T h e C h i l d r e n’s A i d Foundation and Thinking Ship Entertainment, the com-
pany behind the show, have put up $110,000 between them to revitalize the park, Thompson said. Playground theme Children at the Saturday meeting, which is in the Children’s Aid building, will “choose a theme” and lay
out what the park is going to look like. Some will then be selected for interviews on the show. On July 29, 30 and 31, “the entire playground will be rebuilt,” Thompson said.
i
Those interested in the project can call the councillor’s office at 416-397-9274.

Transportation minister weighs in on plans prior to meeting RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com As Metrolinx gets set to release recommendations for new taxes and fees at its meeting on Monday, May 27, Ontario Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Glen Murray said he was not surprised municipalities such as Toronto opted not to endorse a single revenue tool. In an interview Tuesday, May 21, Murray said he and Premier Kathleen Wynne had expected dissent from some politicians, regarding their opinions of the 11 proposed taxes and fees Metrolinx sought feedback on. Those revenue tools would raise $2 billion annually to pay for the completion of the $50 billion Big Move transit plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). “If you go into a conversation only looking for people to agree with you, you’ll be most sadly disappointed,” said Murray.
“I think there have been some very good ideas put forward by most municipalities and there’s been some, as we expected, who haven’t agreed, and we respect that.” During a marathon Toronto City Council meeting during the second week of May, councillors voted to reject staff recommendations on the Metrolinx revenue tools and to support a Scarborough subway line to replace a fullyfunded light rail transit line already agreed to by the province and Metrolinx. Murray said the City of Toronto has the authority to build new transit projects separate from the Master Agreement, and the City of Toronto Act allows them to enact new revenue tools to pay for whatever projects they desire. “Toronto has invested in subways and transit before and nothing in The Big Move stops them from building anything,” he said. “If the city wants to bring
other projects and proposals it wants to pay for, it is quite capable of making those decisions.” Murray also said the Ontario Liberals would continue to support electrifying the Union Pearson Express (UP) air rail link, but insisted it wouldn’t happen until after the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games. While mentioning 2017 as a potential target date for completion, he said “clean” diesel trains ordered by Metrolinx will run along what will be the city’s first express rapid transit connection between Pearson airport and Union Station when UP starts operating in time for the Pan Am Games. “We have to have the UP service in place for the Pan Am Games, which was part of our commitment,” he said. “It is simply not possible to electrify with enough reliability by 2015.”
