Pair of Terry Fox runs slated locally Scarborough will host a pair of Terry Fox runs this Sunday. The West Hill Terry Fox Run is slated for Colonel Danforth Park and the Scarborough Terry Fox Run will take place back in its traditional location of Cedarbrook Park. Last year, the Scarborough run took place in Morningside Park, due to construction which had closed part of the Cedarbrook route’s path. Both runs go from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with registrations starting at 8 a.m. The West Hill run starts at Colonel Danforth Park on Old Kingston Road in the Highland Creek valley, between Military Trail and Manse Road. The Scarborough run starts at Cedarbrook Park, located at 91 East
Park Blvd., west of Markham Road and south of Lawrence Avenue, in Cedarbrae. Participants are welcome to run, walk, rollerblade or cycle the routes, both of which are wheelchair accessible. This is the 32nd year for the Terry Fox Run, held in memory of Fox who at the age of 20 started his Marathon of Hope in April of 1980 in Newfoundland. The Marathon of Hope ended on Sept. 1, 1980 just outside Thunder Bay, ON, as Fox was forced to stop because cancer had spread to his lungs. He died on June 28, 1981. The first Terry Fox Run was held in September of that year. For more information on the Terry Fox Run, please visit www. terryfox.org

Toronto’s first Filipino-Canadian elected into office has been appointed to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Tobias Enverga, a Scarborough trustee with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), was one of five appointees Harper named to the Senate on Friday. “It is a pleasure to announce the appointment of these five distinguished Canadians to the Senate of Canada,” Harper said in a statement. “Their broad range of experience and dedication to community will further strengthen the institution
Here’s proof Jackie Chan, at 58, still does his own stunts. Pursued around a room by a mob of reporters while visiting the Yee Hong Scarborough-Finch Centre on Monday the action superstar managed to sit playfully in the laps of seniors, shake hands with dozens of elders and give each one a gift bag containing his autographed picture. Chan, one of the world’s most recognized faces, is also an hon-
ourary chairperson of the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care’s board of governors. None of them are better than Yee Hong,” Chan said afterwards. The star of Rumble in the Bronx, the Rush Hour series, Drunken Master II and scores of other films - his last action role is said
to be in Chinese Zodiac, coming this December - made it clear he considers Yee Hong something of his own. “And I think we should promote Yee Hong, let everybody learn this kind of model, and how the community can work together to build Yee Hong like that. I really thank all the volunteers, they do such a good job,” he added. Chan remembered that 20 years ago, when he first lent his name to the organization, it was “little” but it has grown “huge” since, he said. >>>CHAN, page 6

and benefit the entire country.” Enverga said he was honoured by the appointment. “It’s very exciting. I know there are a lot of challenges ahead of me, but at the same it’s a big recognition from Prime Minister Harper - not only for me, but for the whole (Filipino-Canadian) community,” he said in an interview with The Mirror on Tuesday. “It’s recognition of our work and our contributions as Filipino Canadians. I’m looking forward to making a difference. I want to help make the country better.” Enverga fills one of two senate vacancies in Ontario. His election >>>ENVERGA, page 6
