Pair of Terry Fox runs slated locally Scarborough will host a pair of Terry Fox runs this Sunday. The West Hill Terry Fox Run is slated for Colonel Danforth Park and the Scarborough Terry Fox Run will take place back in its traditional location of Cedarbrook Park. Last year, the Scarborough run took place in Morningside Park, due to construction which had closed part of the Cedarbrook route’s path. Both runs go from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with registrations starting at 8 a.m. The West Hill run starts at Colonel Danforth Park on Old Kingston Road in the Highland Creek valley, between Military Trail and Manse Road. The Scarborough run starts at Cedarbrook Park, located at 91 East
Park Blvd., west of Markham Road and south of Lawrence Avenue, in Cedarbrae. Participants are welcome to run, walk, rollerblade or cycle the routes, both of which are wheelchair accessible. This is the 32nd year for the Terry Fox Run, held in memory of Fox who at the age of 20 started his Marathon of Hope in April of 1980 in Newfoundland. The Marathon of Hope ended on Sept. 1, 1980 just outside Thunder Bay, ON, as Fox was forced to stop because cancer had spread to his lungs. He died on June 28, 1981. Toronto’s first Filipino-Canadian elected into office has been appointed to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Tobias Enverga, a Scarborough trustee with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), was one of five appointees Harper named to the Senate on Friday. “It is a pleasure to announce the appointment of these five distinguished Canadians to the Senate of Canada,” Harper said in a statement. “Their broad range of experience and dedication to community will further strengthen the institution

Zoo board calling for change to governance MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Zoo, given a chance to govern itself, could secure more private donations and wean itself off operating subsidies from the City of Toronto in 10 years, the zoo’s board directors have decided. In a challenge to the city council that overruled it last fall on the transfer of its elephants, the zoo board announced it wanted a new board, containing up to 24 “prominent corporate, community and business leaders” and only one “non-political” city representative, by Dec. 15. Currently, six of the 14 board members are city councillors. The board last Wednesday approved a report, the work of two consulting firms, which made the case that “zoos function optimally when they are managed and governed independently,” noting three quarters of accredited U.S. zoos were “publicly owned but independently managed.” The city would pay for capital building maintenance in this “New Zoo” – a contribution the report
suggests should be at least $6 million a year – and would still own the zoo property and buildings, but “managerial authority would reside with the zoo.” The zoo “would operate with a more entrepreneurial perspective” more focused on building community partnerships and fundraising, so operating funds from the city ($11.1 million of the zoo’s projected $53.8 million in 2013 revenue) should decline to zero by 2022. Toronto Council forced the zoo to accept transfer of its elephants to a non-accredited California sanctuary after the board decided on sending the animals to another zoo. Dr. Cal Bricker, chairperson of the zoo board’s governance committee, said the episode was a perfect example of people using the board “as a political forum” and creating “a large distraction from doing what we have to do” to improve the zoo and draw in more partnerships and donations. “It’s unclear who runs the zoo” at present, and its operating budget subsidies are “tied up in the internal revenues of the city” and so not guar-
anteed, he said in an interview. The report says the zoo could use its new structure to expand its work in education and conservation, made clear it sees the creation of a Rouge National Urban Park and the five-year loan of giant pandas that starts next spring as providing added opportunities for change. Parks Canada is not considering the zoo property or the former Beare Road landfill area across Meadowvale as within the park’s prospective boundaries, and it plans to build no fewer than four educational centres in Scarborough and Markham. The report, however, predicts “Toronto Zoo stands to become the crown jewel of the Rouge” by its location alone, and Bricker said talks with Parks Canada have been encouraging. It also foresees a “more intensified relationship” with the expanding University of Toronto Scarborough campus, already home to several cooperative programs with the zoo. UTSC would be given a placement on the zoo board, which could be increased beyond 24 members,
though only eight of them would be on an executive committee, said the report which called for a 25-year renewable management agreement with the city for a January 2013 transition. Asked if the proposed pace of transition might be too ambitious, Bricker said it can be made to work if there is political will at Toronto Council. “The Dallas Zoo took 90 days,” he said. Scarborough Southwest Councillor Michelle Berardinetti, who introduced a motion to overturn the board’s decision on elephants, said she and some other councillors have concerns about the report but must examine it further. Paul Ainslie, another Scarborough councillor and vice chairperson of the zoo board, said he supported the governance proposal despite what he called “fearmongering from some of my colleagues.” Councillors wanted an independent zoo but didn’t want it to be sold. “I would be very surprised if we didn’t get council to accept it,”
Ainslie said last Friday, adding the zoo “gets behind every year” in keeping up with its state of good repair investments. Ainslie said some colleagues on the board voted to get rid of the zoo’s charitable foundation, but weren’t able to raise funds on the scale the zoo needs. Fundraising will be more successful when the zoo has an expanded board, he said. “We’re trying to make it more of a regional entity.” Grant Ankenman, president of CUPE Local 1600 which represents zoo workers, also said he would study the report but noted the proposed zoo governance was “kind of going full circle” since the zoo originally was run by the Metropolitan Toronto Zoological Society. The citizen-led group which formed in 1966 and opened the zoo in 1974 in partnership with the city, ran into problems during that decade and the city assumed control. “For whatever reason it didn’t work,” Bricker acknowledged, but added, “the conditions were just very different back then than they are now.”

Terry Fox Run: sustain a legacy T
here’s a lesson for volunteer organizations to observe when it comes to the Terry Fox Run. The event has grown enormously over its 32 years and is now a worldwide undertaking – one that even goes beyond the traditional Sunday run in multiple locales. For example, there’s now a separate National School Run Day. There’s also an intriguing new initiative making its debut this year. Canadian university students are being urged to get involved with Terry’s Cause on Campus. Among its goals is “to inspire future generations with Terry’s story of courage, selflessness and hope.” So far, our view nine events are confirmed, including one in Toronto. Intriguing new Students at University of Toronto will participate in a run initiative for bringing students from all three of its campus locations (down- annual event town Toronto, Mississauga, Scarborough) to its Scarborough campus. While most of the university events are taking place Sunday, Toronto’s is scheduled for Oct. 3. It’s a fitting expansion for a number of reasons. Terry Fox was a first-year student at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which resulted in his right leg being amputated above the knee. The connection of this event to a university campus is an obvious one. Just as importantly, by directly engaging university students – our leaders of tomorrow – Terry Fox Run organizers are making a shrewd, sustainable investment in ensuring the continuation of Fox’s legacy. It also signals renewal. Many organizations run the risk of becoming irrelevant once the generation that created those organizations passes on. It’s a sad, but undeniable reality; volunteer organizations need to consider a form of succession planning if they hope to be sustainable. And there’s reason to hope. Our young people do volunteer. In a Statistics Canada report released earlier this year, titled Caring Canadians, Involved Canadians, nearly 60 per cent of Ontarians between the ages of 15 and 24 volunteered at least once in the previous 12 months. It’s the highest volunteer rate of the six age groups cited in the survey, and well above the provincial rate of 47.7 per cent. Participating in the Terry Fox Run is an excellent way to honour the memory of a bonafide Canadian hero. It always has been. It’s encouraging to see that growth continue and that investments are being made to ensure the continuation of Fox’s legacy. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Community housing CEO should work to eliminate social housing To the editor: Re: “Overcoming the stigma of social housing’, Editorial, Sept. 7. I am extremely respectful of the challenges that will be faced and conquered by Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) CEO Eugene Jones. I am also respectful of his past contributions within the financial side of community housing as well as his successes within the Detroit Housing Commission. However, I do respectfully submit that my preference would be that Jones work diligently in the future to eliminate not only his own position, but also the entire concept behind the TCHC. I am not saying I wish to see Jones unemployed as I feel he has far too much to
offer an employer to ever be unemployed. What I am saying is the only way to eliminate any stigma at all with social housing is to eliminate social housing. I want Jones to totally destroy the stigma that is really created by TCHC being the largest real estate holder of public housing and the second largest in North America, a stigma they proudly state on their website. I want Jones to lead the charge of selling off every single family home that is within the TCHC’s real estate portfolio. I want Jones to redevelop every single TCHC site within Toronto, through private partnerships, to mixed-use, mixed residency usage. I want Jones to work with
the mayor, city council and Premier Dalton McGuinty to eliminate the stigma and replace it with a rent or even purchase subsidy for housing that is awarded on a “measured needs” basis. Toronto does not need to be a landlord. The city needs to be a provider, a resource, an assistant to the upward path that many people currently need and will need in the future. The real cost of all social welfare in Toronto accounts for a third of a $9 billion budget, the province picking up $2 billion of that. There will be no stigma of crime centred around public housing if there is no recognizable label attached to a piece of property. I want Jones to lead the charge, lead the change and lead the future. To the editor: Re: ‘How do our police serve and protect?’, Special Report, Aug. 30. The Mirror told us of Scarborough shooting stats and how Police Chief Bill Blair has responded with more officers. This was informative. I am an active member of 41 Division community. I volunteer my time with the community officers. I have to direct my opinion at African Canadian Legal Clinic rep Moya Teklu. The article states some people in the black community are being overpoliced. Crime has no colour, but in the article it stated the black community is being disproportionately targeted and policed. Policing starts with the community and how they view the area they live in. Police cannot be everywhere, so it falls onto the community to report crimes where they live so that police can do their jobs properly. The constant code of silence of not reporting crimes that do occur fuels the mistrust of police, who come into an area looking for answers to what happened, only to be regarded as the enemy. People need to be proactive in reporting crimes that have occurred, including the Danzig shootings. There are ways to report crime without leaving one’s name and Crime Stoppers is a prime example. The daily workings of police who patrol these areas of concern, in my opinion, is not over-policing, it is over-protecting so the people in the area will be safe. I think the police in Scarborough’s 41, 42 and 43 Divisions are doing a great job of policing with the resources they have at hand. Rob Charbonneau

Local athletes Dini, Lancia win Paralympic gold Two Scarborough natives and longtime members of Variety Village helped Canada to a gold medal in men’s wheelchair basketball at the London 2012 Paralympic Games Saturday. Abdi Dini and Adam Lancia (who just recently moved to Nova Scotia from Scarborough) helped Canada to its third Paralympic gold medal in four tries with a 64-58 win over defending champion Australia. Lancia was spotted in for just under three minutes duty while Dini was one of three Canadian players logging more than half an hour. Undefeated Canada, which won all eight games, was again led by Patrick Anderson who notched a game-high 34 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Lancia began shooting hoops in 1989 and learned about wheelchair basketball from Archie Allison, an employee at Variety Village. He continued to play wheelchair basketball for Variety Village until he starting playing in Europe in 2009. Dini is originally from Somalia, where he was injured by a roadside bomb. Termed in the Paralympic media guide as a quiet leader who leads by example, the Variety Village club member began playing wheelchair basketball in 1996 and joined the senior men’s national team in 2008.

Enverga excited about new role >>>from page 1 as the TCDSB trustee for northeast Scarborough during the October 2010 municipal election marked the first time a Filipino Canadian was elected to office. TCDSB chair Ann Andrachuk wished Enverga every success in his new portfolio. “I’m sure that his passion for multiculturalism, heritage and education will serve him well,” she said in a statement. In addition to his experience as a trustee, Enverga has also been heavily involved with a number of organizations and charitable projects. He is the co-chair of the Asian Heritage Month Celebration for the Greater Toronto Area, and was previously the director of the Canadian Multicultural Council – Asians in Ontario. He is also the founder of the Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation, and a former president of the Philippine Independence Day Council. While Harper’s announcement said Enverga’s appointment to the Senate takes effect immediately, Enverga said he officially assumes his post on Sept. 25. While he said he laments leaving his TCDSB

Chan makes third visit to Yee Hong >>>from page 1 “I believe another 10 years in the future, it will be I think one of the best in the world.” During a press event conducted largely in Cantonese and Mandarin, Chan greeted Kenny Lee, Yee Hong’s oldest resident, who is said to be 114 years old. He also handed a special framed souvenir to Kaw Yeung, vice president of the home’s resident council. It contained a simple statement of Chan’s support, surrounded by photos of the star on previous Yee Hong visits. The first was in 1996, when the original long-term-care home at McNicoll and Midland avenues was newly opened and already planning an expansion. The second was in 2001, when Chan was in Toronto shooting The Tuxedo and Yee Hong was about to build new locations in Markham, Mississauga and Scarborough. In at least one of those pictures, the star recognized the passage of time in himself. “Such a young boy,” he joked in English. This time, Chan was in Toronto for its international film festival and a summit to promote
co-operation between Chinese and Western filmmakers. Asked to appear, his affirmative reply “was almost immediate,” said Henry Chiu, a director of the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation. Yee Hong residents knew a superstar was coming to see them, but until Monday morning they didn’t know who it was, said Keung, 94. “He is very famous in the world. We’re happy today,” he said, and laughed. Chan mentioned another reason to support the Yee Hong Centres, which have Ontario’s longest waiting list and whose fundraising arm says it must raise $2.5 million a year to keep up a superior level of care. “Yee Hong is not only helping Chinese” but other people who live there too, he said, including Japanese-Canadians he met at Scarborough-Finch. One was Sumi Nishi, who told Chan she is 99 years old, almost 100. “He said it’s wonderful. He said ‘I wish I could be like you.’” Nishi said she saw Chan’s movies “when I was younger” and living in Vancouver. “He hasn’t changed much. He hasn’t aged or anything,” she added.

Suspects in December murder linked to gang ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com The two men who killed D’Mitre Barnaby on Dec. 30 of last year were vying for leadership in the Galloway Boys gang and mistakenly thought the victim was from a rival group. Police said an investigation revealed the murder was sparked by “gang conflict” between Galloway Boys and “males associated to the Orton Park area.” Police believe this dispute is behind at least six other shootings in the area over the past year. Barnaby was gunned down after getting out of his car at 3895 Lawrence Ave. E. The 24-year-old wasn’t affiliated with a gang; his murder has been deemed to be a case of mistaken identity. “The intended target, and I can’t release his name, strikes a resemblance to our victim,” Det. Sgt. Brett Nicol told reporters Tuesday during a news conference at the murder scene. “If you saw a picture side by side, it’s an amazing resemblance, and the intended target does live in this immediate area.” The Galloway Boys and the Orton Park group don’t have a long history of violence. Though their territories abut, they got along in the past. Nicol said the recent violence is based on “a beef” between the two groups. “In 2004, there was a successful prosecu-
tion of the Galloway Boys,” he said. “It did hamper their criminal involvement in this end of Scarborough, but slowly members got out. They were considered mentors to the young members that we’re now seeking today.” Police said Barnaby was in his car with a friend in the back parking lot of 3847 Lawrence, an apartment building, when a white four-door Nissan Versa circled around them just before 11 a.m. Dec. 30. Barnaby’s friend sensed trouble and left the area. Barnaby then drove to the parking lot at nearby 3895 Lawrence. Meanwhile, the Nissan dropped off two males who followed Barnaby into the lot. When Barnaby got out of his car, the males ran up to him and shot him multiple times. Police have released a video compilation of the events leading up to and after the murder. “Investigators believe that the conflict between the Galloway Boys and other neighbourhoods in the Scarborough area, in particular Orton Park, is being fuelled by the Galloway Boys’ propensity for violence, their ability to obtain guns and their willingness to seek revenge,” Nicol said. “We have some information that the shooters in these incidents are vying for the leadership within the Galloway Boys group. ... These guys are involved in all sorts of criminality from drug dealing, weapons trafficking, prostitution.”

Dispute led to mass shooting on Danzig Street Confrontation between Galloway Boys gang members, visitors from Malvern ended in violence ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police believe a confrontation between the Galloway Boys street gang and a group of people from Malvern led to the shootout at the July 16 barbecue on Danzig Street that left two dead and two dozen injured. Police said there were five to six shooters involved. “Roughly 25 shell casings were recovered, and to this date, we’ve recovered five firearms in relation to this occurrence,” Det. Sgt. Peter Trimble told reporters Tuesday at the townhouse complex where the shootout occurred. “The firearms and shell casings will be checked for DNA. As well, a microscopic examination will take place, and that’s to determine what shell casing came from what firearm.” Police revealed details of what transpired at the barbecue: Residents of the Danzig townhouse complex held the annual event for neighbourhood children in the afternoon hours. The barbecue continued into the evening, at which time youth from outside the

complex began to arrive, including members of the Galloway Boys. One gang member used Twitter to invite people to the party. “He actually referred to it as his Blocko, and he advised that he would be supplying Hennessy cognac on his tab for those who attended,” Trimble said. “This obviously garnered a lot of attention.” People from the east end of Toronto and the west end of Durham
“A second confrontation occurred, which ultimately led to a shootout,” said Trimble. “This occurred in amongst over 100 people.” Shyanne Charles, 14, and Joshua Yasay, 23, were killed. Twenty-three others suffered gunshot wounds. One person was hurt as a result of being trampled on. Nahom Tsegazab, also known as Gifted, who police allege is a Galloway Boy, was arrested July 19 and has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm. Shaquan Mesquito, also known as Bam Bam, a resident of Malvern, has been arrested for making threats prior to the shooting. “At the time of his arrest, he was
in possession of a loaded firearm,” Trimble alleged. Trimble, the lead investigator in the Danzig case, urged witnesses to come forward. “I need people that are going to come to court and testify. These were a small group of young punks, approximately five to six people that were involved in this shooting,” he said. “We need people to stand up, testify against these people, and that will result in a successful prosecution.” Trimble noted those arrested and some victims have not been co-operative with the investigation. “Some of them have refused to talk to us, which makes our job very difficult.” Police also believe the Galloway Boys gang is linked to several other shootings in Scarborough: n D’Mitre Barnaby, 24, was gunned down after getting out his car at 3895 Lawrence Ave. E. at 11 a.m. Dec. 30. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Barnaby was not affiliated with any street gang. His murder has been deemed to be a case of mistaken identity. Police released a video
compilation of the events leading up to and after the murder. n Three men standing outside the Domino’s Pizza at Lawrence Avenue East and Susan Street were wounded by gunfire on Sept. 4, 2011. One victim was struck several times in the back; the others were shot in the legs. n A man was shot in the neck and upper body while in his vehicle during a drug deal on Nov. 4. A man associated with the Galloway Boys was arrested on Monday and charged with attempted murder. n A drive-by shooting occurred on Dec. 28 at 4315 Kingston Rd., the Galloway Boys’ turf. Three males were shot at. n Several shots were fired in the second-floor hallway of 3827 Lawrence Ave. E. on Jan. 15. Blood was found at the scene, but no victim has been identified. n Several shots were fired in the area of 4100 Lawrence Ave. E. on Aug. 6. Several suspects were seen fleeing. No victim was identified. n A man was shot chased and shot outside the Lawrence LRT station Aug. 10. Police said the victim was one of the up-and-coming leaders of the Galloway Boys.

Silver car’s occupants sought in murder probe ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto. com Police believe the occupants of a silver car may have witnessed a weekend murder and are urging them to come forward. Abdulaziz Farah, 28, was gunned down on Fawcett Trail at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. He died at the scene of the shooting. Farah’s black four-door Acura with chrome rims was driven from the scene but has since been located.
A silver car was seen in the area during the shooting. Police said the car isn’t a suspect vehicle. However, they want to speak to its occupants as they may have information that would assist in the investigation. This is the city’s 35th murder of the year. “We are actively investigating it right now,” Det. Omar Khan said yesterday afternoon. Mother of accused in dismemberment murder found dead in townhouse The torso of Scarborough spa owner Guang Hua Liu was discovered in a suitcase in Lake Ontario last week, Toronto police have confirmed. A post-mortem late last Thursday confirmed that the body part found last Wednesday in the suitcase belonged to the mother of three. Liu’s body parts were found in a number of locations across the Greater Toronto Area in August including Mississauga and Scarborough. Police said boaters located
a suitcase floating in the water at around 11:20 a.m. and brought it to shore at Bluffer’s Park. Police have yet to determine the cause of Liu’s death. Parts of Liu’s arms and legs are still missing, according to police. Murder charge Chun Qi Jiang, 40, the victim’s estranged boyfriend, has been charged with seconddegree murder. The investigation has been turned over to the Peel
Regional Police Service homicide squad. The mother of Jiang was found dead in her son’s home Sunday, Sept. 9. Police said they arrived at Jiang’s Brimwood Boulevard townhouse, in the Brimley Road and Fincha Avenue area, around 10:45 a.m. after receiving a phone call and found the woman’s body. Though police said her death isn’t considered suspicious, they aren’t sure when she died. An autopsy has been scheduled for this week.

Sandy said the building should have security guards at night. “If there was security in this building, maybe this wouldn’t have happened.” An 11th-floor resident who didn’t give her name said a married couple live in the unit where the body was found. She said the couple don’t speak English and keep to themselves. “It’s so sad,” said the resident, noting she didn’t hear or see anything suspicious early Friday. On Feb. 11, 2011, Lorenzo Martinez, 23, was found with a gunshot wound in the lobby of nearby apartment building 70 Stevenvale Dr. He died en route to Sunnybrook hospital. Two 19-year-old men were charged with firstdegree murder in Martinez’s death. The death was initially classified as a homicide. But after an autopsy was conducted Saturday, police reclassified the case as a suspicious death. The homicide squad continues to investigate. Police said they interviewed three people as part of the investigation. No arrests have been made. “I woke up at four o’clock in the morning because there were bright lights shining into my apartment,” said a fifth-floor resident who identified herself only as Sandy. “I saw all the police here. I thought it was a movie shoot.” Sandy, 63, said she was shocked and horrified to learn of the suspicious death. “Never before has there been anything like this happen here, at least not in the eight years

Residents of a Scarborough seniors’ building are in shock after a 65-year-old man was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a second-floor apartment balcony early Friday. Police were called to 65 Greencrest Circuit near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue at 2:45 a.m. They said the deceased, whose name isn’t being released, had “obvious signs of trauma.” The body was removed from the balcony at about noon.

ob Ford was never going to get out of that courtroom unscathed, and by the time Clayton Ruby was finished with him on the stand last Wednesday, the Mayor of Toronto was pretty much on the ropes. At the end of it, our mayor emerged as a seemingly careless steward of the city, wilfully ignorant of the laws he had sworn to uphold, a passionate defender of the social benefits of high school football but disinterested in almost everything else. It’s not a surprise. If Ruby had been permitted to by Judge Charles Hackland, he might have been able to introduce a laundry list of stories with which we are all familiar regarding Ford’s behaviour. Ford’s lawyer Alan Lenczner successfully argued that questioning on those matters would do more than embarrass the mayor. It might also have embarrassed a great many

voters – because let’s face it: no one who voted for him could say they weren’t told exactly the kind of guy Ford was. Now, he is facing the very real prospect of losing the job to which he was elected. Unless Hackland is persuaded by Lenczner’s suite of finely honed legal arguments – council had no authority to order the repayment; the mayor made an error in judgement in good faith; Ford’s interpretation of the Conflict of Interest Act (which he admitted to never having read) is correct – he will have little choice but to remove the mayor from office. If the sentence comes down without also imposing a restriction preventing him from running, it could be
that Ford becomes a candidate in the byelection called to replace him. It could be that he would prevail in such a byelection on the well-worn narrative of victimhood: Rob Ford, the candidate who was removed from elected office by a judge for the crime of helping schools in poor neighbourhoods have football teams. If the judge imposes restrictions, count on him running again in the first election he can. And give him good odds of winning that one. Because the time has come to face facts: when it comes to Rob Ford, there is a large constituency of voters that don’t want to face facts when it comes to their candidate. to stop its data-gathering before the two-year period was finished, Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie said the moratorium and the device’s removal added up to “a victory for all of us.”
After two years of measuring wind off the Scarborough Bluffs, a Toronto Hydro device is gone and a local councillor is claiming belated victory. The utility started taking the device, an anemometer, apart on Aug. 25 and finished removing it two days later. Many residents of the Guildwood neighbourhood bitterly opposed the device, fearing data it collected would be used to approve a wind farm of as many as 60 turbines stretching two to four kilometres offshore from Ajax to the Leslie Street Spit. The province seemed to rule that out by announcing a moratorium on offshore wind projects in February of 2011. Unsuccessful in his requests
permit expired The utility’s permit expired Oct. 1 for the anemometer, which stood 1.2 kilometres from shore, four metres above Lake Ontario’s surface. “Awfully nice of them to take the anemometer out ahead of time,” Ainslie said in an interview. Toronto Hydro spokesperson, Tanya Bruckmueller said York University scientists will analyze the data and publish a report early in 2013. “There are no future plans at this time” to use the data for projects because of the
moratorium, Bruckmueller said. Ainslie, who had asked for the raw data to be released publicly for review, said he would be surprised if it shows wind turbines viable. Bruckmueller, however, said early indications are the anemometer’s measurements of wind resources “do meet our expectations.” Winds averaging 7.5 metres per second were considered adequate for turbines and “the initial results are slightly higher than that,” she said. Though he said “I’m hoping it’s the end of it,” Ainslie added he and other east Scarborough residents will stay vigilant against any attempt by the utility to advance a turbine project in the future. “From Day One they’ve been very sneaky about this,” he said.

Landlord in negotiations for new tenant at former AMC theatre MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Business decisions made in China and Kansas City have left a movie theatre complex empty in Scarborough. Theatre chain AMC permanently closed The Kennedy Commons 20 – all 70,106 square feet of it at the Kennedy Commons power centre – on Aug. 26 because the company “is focusing on its primary business unit in the United States,” AMC’s public relations director Ryan Noonan said this week. Noonan, writing from the chain’s headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, said he didn’t know how many employees at Kennedy Commons were affected. A Chinese company, Dalian Wanda, recently bought AMC for $2.6 billion. Closed in Canada The chain then decided to close all its Canadian multiplexes. Cineplex bought four, including the 24-screen AMC Yonge and Dundas which switched over this summer, and said it was welcoming 250 new employees as a result. But Cineplex, which already owns Morningside Cinemas on Milner Avenue and Coliseum Scarborough at Scarborough Town Centre, wasn’t interested in the Kennedy Commons 20, which opened in December 1998 off Kennedy Road just south of Hwy. 401. Empire Theatres, Cineplex’s largest competitor, didn’t want it either. Attendance at the multiplex had declined before the closure and the

Strong performances drive production of Outlaw Scarborough Theatre Guild opens season with character driven Norm Foster play MARIA TZAVARAS scm@insidetoronto.com There comes a time in every man’s life when he has to make the decision to do the right thing or take the easy way out. But when you’re used to not caring about the outcome of anything unless it concerns you, and you are a cowboy in rural Kansas in 1871, that’s no easy feat. In Scarborough Theatre Guild’s first show of the season, Outlaw by Norm Foster, one man finds himself in this scenario in a thought-provoking and funny play about a loner cowboy’s conscience as he grapples with his stance in his life, and the man who may die if he doesn’t come to the right decision. While Outlaw has a lot of funny dialogue, it’s a more low-key, character-driven play that showcases the law of the land and the stereotypical men of that era. That is, with
the exception of Bob Hicks (Chris Little), a Canadian from Alberta, who finds himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. Bob, who has left his family and small farm to come to Kansas to work as a cattle driver, has the misfortune of being witness to the murder of the brother of wealthy cattle baron Roland Keets (Mike Davidson), but instead is accused of doing the deed himself. While he lay sound asleep, he is awoken by Will Vanhorne (Mark Boyko) a cattle wrangler who works for Mr. Keets who’s sent to bring Bob in for hanging. Bob, who’s a gentle man who doesn’t believe in guns, soon finds himself in a noose awaiting Keets and Sherriff Dupuis Tarwater (Alex Bortoluzzi), so his sentence can be carried out. But Bob also finds himself in a unique situation with Will, and the relationship that transpires is a far cry from
the stereotypical condemned man and his captor. It’s a little surreal to see these men talk about their lives, being cordial to one another, even friendly, all the while knowing in one hour’s time Bob will find himself hanging in front of him for a murder he continually swears he didn’t commit. Throughout the interplay between the two men, you can see the indifferent Will softening his stance that he doesn’t care if Bob did the deed or not or whether he lives or dies. And just when it looks like Bob is getting somewhere with Will, Sheriff Tarwater arrives. He just wants to see the hanging carried out so they can resume their day and put the matter behind them. When Keets finally arrives, a collision of personalities occurs and when Bob and Will’s courage combine, the show takes an unexpected turn of events that won’t dis-
appoint. The performances of the four men in this show exude a great understanding of their characters. There is the strong, silent type in Will, and the progression of his wavering character played amazingly by Boyko and the rough and careless sheriff who loves his women and booze played convincingly by Bortoluzzi. There’s also the rich and powerful cattle baron, played by Davidson, who has a great command of the stage and a presence to match, and new to the stage this season, Little and his moving portrayal of the vulnerable, strong in his convictions and condemned, Bobby.
The simple yet stunning set of a few rocks and a tree that spans floor to ceiling sets the scenery for this slower-paced show, that’s heavy on the dialogue as it is in great one-liners.
