Cedar Ridge marks 100th anniversary with garden party ANGELINE MAIR scm@insidetoronto.com A house built by a wealthy financier 100 years ago continues to flourish as a home for Scarborough artists is celebrating a milestone with a garden party this Sunday. Cedar Ridge Creative Centre sits nestled in a garden oasis with the white stucco cottage peeking through the dense greenery surrounding it. Birds chirping break the silence blanketing the natural sanctuary. This home of inspiration - for many artists near and far - has been preserved by the determination of administrator and treasurer of Cedar Ridge Studio Gallery, Joy Hughes,

who has been working since the late 1960s to make art accessible to all. When it comes to Cedar Ridge, she says, “It’s very unique. And for many years (it was) the only arts centre in the whole east end.” Hughes adds, “It’s a beautiful building and it’s a shame if it was not for the arts.” Once inside the home, it’s plain to see how it provides pure inspiration to any creative mind. This is because whatever the 19-year-old Scarborough resident is faced with, she welcomes the challenge with open arms and aims to succeed at it. Flynn has a life with a packed social and extracurricular calendar, including synchronized and competitive swimming for the past 12 years, performing in local theatre and exhibiting and selling works from her more recent passion,

nature and wildlife photography. Having Down’s Syndrome hasn’t slowed her down one bit. Starting today, Flynn will be exhibiting some of her photography at an exhibition called Toronto: Street Level, a group photography exhibition that will display works that showcase our city from a unique perspective. Olympian visits Birchmount Park MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com He looked nervous at the start, before the flood of questions began. But as Simon Whitfield – goldmedal triathlete, Canadian flagbearer at the London Olympics – told students at Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute yesterday, feeling nervous is a great thing, if you embrace it as an opportunity. “There’s a lot of power in that,” said Whitfield, a four-time Olympian who described the pressure of competing at the Olympics as overwhelming. He was “kind of nervous” about waving the flag in the moments, watched by millions of Canadians @SCMirror

this summer, when Whitfield led the Olympic team into the stadium; at first, he said, he waved it gently. “I learned to get really into it.” Whitfield grew up in Kingston, entered his first triathlon on a bet he couldn’t finish it, and finished “way back.” As a teenage athlete, Whitfield said, he wasn’t great, but applied himself. In high school, he loved applying himself to something. At 16, he left for Australia on his own, and never looked back. At 19, he went to France to race with a team there. He was “all in” for his sport, which combines cycling, swimming and a foot race. This week, after 14 world victories, 21 podium finishes and 12 Canadian

championships, he told students at Birchmount, a specialized sports school that has sent five alumni to the Olympics, he envied them going forward. “I’m at the other end of my sporting career. I have a couple of years left,” said Whitfield, who was soon quite at ease with the students, telling them they can reach the highest levels of success in sport once they commit “to train on the days the others won’t.” Kim Provost, president of the school’s athletic council, asked Whitfield about his crashes and injuries. Six teens charged after man, 21, parents assaulted

Six teenage boys face charges in connection with a robbery Wednesday. Police allege a 21-year-old man was riding his bicycle in the Lawrence Avenue and Port Union Road area when six boys came up to him and demanded his bike around 5:45 p.m. The man fled to his home. The teens followed the man, forced their way into his apartment and assaulted him and his parents. Police arrested the suspects a short distance away. Two 14 year olds, three 15 year olds and a 16 year old have been charged with robbery and unlawfully being in a dwelling. One 14 year old is also charged with assault and assault with a weapon. The teens can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police are looking for five teen males after a 22-year-old woman was swarmed and robbed Tuesday. Police said the woman was walking through a tunnel near Progress Avenue and McCowan Road when the males approached from behind and surrounded her around 7 p.m. One suspect took the victim’s cellphone and bag containing computer equipment and fled with his accomplices. The victim escaped injury. Three suspects are black, 15 to 18 years old with thin builds. The other two are white, 15 to 18 with thin builds. The time for a youth centre Roach calls The Changa House is now, she said this week, because we keep “losing our children to violence.” At a press conference Tuesday, she mentioned a double homicide that morning in Rexdale. Two more young men had been shot down. “When will this stop? What are we doing?” Roach asked at Dr. Roz’s Healing Place, a Brimley Road shelter for women and children where she is executive director. “I call on the public to step up,” and join the effort to find $5 million for Changa House, she said. Roach said the programs politicians are counting on to stop such violence aren’t effective because they end.

After six months or a year, when the investments run out, youth that the anti-violence programs work with can feel abandoned, even devastated. What was gained in their behaviour can be lost, warned Roach, a registered nurse and psychotherapist. Children at risk The results affect not just our city’s “at risk” youth but all of us, she said. “At the end of the day all our children are ‘at risk’ because of the society we live in.” There’s no way to get rid of the violence influencing families and homes unless the anti-violence education offered to children is sustained from a first contact until they have matured in a “wholesome place of being,” and are already to take

Roach started the fundraising campaign in 2009 with support from NBA star Jamaal Magloire and former Scarborough MPP Alvin Curling, and on Tuesday said it has raised a few hundred thousand dollars so far.

She said a foundation, formed a year ago, incorporated recently to help raise the $5 million needed to build Changa House and work with youth in the community. Roach, who raised and negotiated $5 million to reopen the former Emily Stowe Shelter for Women as the Healing Place in 2004, said she tells bankers, “If you invest $1 million in this project you get so much back.” Violence a disease The group’s biggest fundraising event this year will be its annual Celebrating Women Who Have Triumphed Awards night slated for Friday, Oct. 19 at Queen Palace Banquet Hall in Scarborough for $125 a ticket. It will feature former residents of the Healing Place who overcame violence in their lives.

Violence, like a social disease, has infiltrated our homes, said Atiba Roach, coordinator of the Healing Place’s VIBE (Vital Intervention Breakthrough Empowerment) interactive music program for youth for the past six years. Frustrated and angry “They are frustrated and angry. They don’t understand their value or their worth,” but with the right programs, they can be shown how valuable they are, he said. Roach said she was negotiating for a site in Markham, but added “people are battling for the project” and Changa House may be built elsewhere. Her dream, she said, is to start construction by turning the soil on Dec. 13, 2013. “I like to do things on my birthday.”

Youth volunteers add value, energy to organizations

To the editor: My family was out at an environment event earlier this summer, and upon returning to our Scarborough home we noticed that our fruit tree in our backyard had been emptied entirely. No one saw a thing. Several of our neighbours would usually be given baskets of fruit from us when our pear tree was ready to be picked. The pears taken from our tree were small and not ripe.

he recent selection of 34 members to the newly formed Youth Advisory Council by the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan AM Games organizing committee recognizes the importance of youth participation in ensuring the success of such a large scale event. “Inspiring and engaging the next generation of leaders is central to the vision of the 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games,” said Ian Troop, CEO of the 2015 Games. “We want the Games to our view touch as many people as possible and this council will be Much-needed the driving voice to ensure the Games are youth-focused and perspective inclusive.” And Toronto is well-repreprovided sented with the majority of youth advisors and ambassadors being from the city including Cynthia Berringer from Etobicoke, Newton Asare II and Alita Fernandez both from Scarborough, and Arabi Rajeswaran from North York. Toronto Police Services is also calling out to youth for its new campaign to create a video or poster educating others on when to call 911 and how to avoid pocket dials that clog up the emergency line. More organizations should follow suit and actively engage youth for their input and creativity. Opportunity exists anywhere there is a need for more resources, especially when local community groups are stretched to provide services on a shrinking budget. It should no longer be the sole responsibility of such youth-focused organizations as Youth Employment Services in Etobicoke, Youth Unlimited serving North York, or YouthLink in Scarborough to reach out to the next generation. Nor should it rest just on the school communities that educate the students throughout the week. But we can learn from them as they have already demonstrated the benefits of engaging youth through the programs and activities they offer. Those benefits include allowing youth to divert their energy and attention to something positive rather than finding themselves getting into trouble. It also instills the value of leadership and volunteerism at an early age. Perhaps more significantly, given the additional responsibility of contributing to a larger project, this younger demographic will grow up and become more active citizens in their community beyond their youth. I’m afraid this is about the NHL lockout I t’s tough enough for the average person to understand what the so-called “core” economic issues are in the ongoing collective bargaining negotiations between the National Hockey League and the NHL Players’ Association. What’s really confusing onlookers is the negotiating process itself. To listen to the bafflegab coming from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr during press conferences, you’d swear this is what the actual discussions sound like behind closed doors. Fraser called it Cedar Ridge.

Arts centre Hughes says, “John Fraser’s daughter has always said to me, she is just so thrilled that it (Cedar Ridge) turned into an arts centre rather than a nursing home.” In 1977, plans to turn the 12-acre site into a children’s playground, wading pool and baseball diamond surfaced, but local residents opposed the idea. Scarborough approached Guildcrest Studios about redirecting their fundraising initiative to Cedar Ridge, which was an opportunity to develop the arts centre and gallery. During the restoration, Guildcrest Studios became Cedar Ridge Studio Gallery and continues to have an

active presence on site today, partnering with the city to program the gallery, and run annual special events. Susan Kohler, senior arts consultant, Arts Services, Cultural Services Economic Development and Culture Scarborough Civic Centre, it’s not unusual that many artists continue to have a deep connection to the centre, she has seen many young students start at Cedar Ridge as camp members and graduate to volunteering and some continue to be employed by the centre. She also adds “Artists continue to return here for classes - not that they need them anymore - they simply keep coming back. People bond with this place.” One of these artists is Alice Montgomery who continues to take pottery classes at the centre even though she has created and sold many items. The sixty-two-year-old Scarborough resident started attending pottery classes two years ago at the centre on a neighbour’s recommendation. “It’s not something I would have heard of,” she said. Montgomery said her love for clay started when she was at the cottage. “I always liked clay. We always had it at the cottage!” she jokes.

She says a big part of being at the centre is the “at home” feeling of being there. “Coming from the parking lot you are already relaxed. We have lunch in the house’s sun room, which is next to the gallery.” Montgomery, who is a gardener, loves the gardens surrounding the carriage house, too, because she can incorporate different leaves into her pottery. The pottery class was in the basement but it’s moved up into the carriage house now and she says, “the doors are open and the air is coming in and you can see the gardens. She loves “just being here” and working with professional staff and fellow artists, who offer tips, hints and expertise, which help her grow as an artist. Montgomery also had a “hard time” when it came to showing her work. But her instructors encouraged her and “showed me it was fun and to be part of the action,” she says. Now she sees people drinking from a mug she made and says: “Oh, that’s a nice mug!” In addition, to traditional pottery, the centre also offers Raku, which is non-functional Japanese pottery fired in an outdoor pit. “It’s really exciting,” says Montgomery. Cedar Ridge is celebrating its

100th anniversary with a garden party and open house this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. It includes a historical gallery exhibition, artist demonstrations in the studios, and afternoon tea in the garden. For information, call 416-3964026. Mansion built in 1912 The picturesque mansion was built in 1912 as a summer home for the Cummings family. Charles Cummings was President of C.C. Cummings Ltd., the Slater Shoe empire and owner/manager of the Lumsden building, at Yonge and Adelaide streets, once one of Toronto’s more prominent landmarks. In 1911, Cummings began assembling land for the Scarboro Golf and Country Club and acquired the property on which Cedar Ridge now stands as one of the several sites to be set aside for possible sale to club members. Cummings hired R. Nicholls to build a large summer home, which was named Uplands, for his family. With business interests in Toronto and a home in Rosedale, the Cummings used Uplands infrequently, mostly during the summer months.

In 1927, the home was sold to John Fraser, a Toronto financier. The property, which Fraser renamed Cedar Ridge. Meanwhile, in 1932, Rosa and Spencer Clark had established the Guild of All Arts at the former summer home of Col. Brickford, overlooking the Scarborough Bluffs. In 1968, the Guildwood School of Arts and Crafts was established, with space provided by the Clarks in a building known as Corycliff Lodge. In 1974, the non-profit organization was given its official charter and became known as the Guildcrest Studios. When it became apparent that the space was too small for the future needs of the growing organization, fund raising initiatives were begun to finance expansion. Following the death of Fraser, Cedar Ridge was acquired by Metropolitan Toronto but by a previous land exchange agreement, the house and surrounding 12 acres came into Scarborough’s possession.

Photo exhibit opens today >>>from page 1 perspectives, different ages, different races, different abilities, levels of experience and aesthetics.” The photography exhibition is just one of the many events taking place as a part of the AAF, an almost threeweek festival that includes musical and theatrical performances, film screenings and a media festival. This year marks AAF’s 10th anniversary. Fraticelli said participating artists hail from all over the GTA and surrounding areas. The year’s festival also features guest artists from British Columbia and the United Kingdom.

Remove obstacles Fraticelli said the AAF organization and festival have grown a lot in the past 10 years, and is important in being able to showcase disability arts and culture. “Our job is to remove the obstacles from either the artists in doing their work or the audience in seeing the work,” she said. “It could be as simple as wheelchairs accessibility or they need ASL or making sure the film has subtitles for those who have hearing impediments.” The event kicked off with a gala celebration last night. Flynn, who loves to dress up, said she was excited to be attending the gala. Her mother Kathy said it’s a full

circle moment for her daughter because in past years they’ve enjoyed being visitors to the event and now Flynn is an exhibiting artist. Flynn said she is looking forward to exhibiting her work in Toronto, after selling and showing her work for the past two summers at the farmer’s market in Madoc, ON, where her family has a cottage. “Painters will come and buy her photos and then go home and use them to paint them into their own paintings, so they use them as a jumping point,” Kathy Primrose, her mom, said. Because she loves nature photography, Flynn said she gets a lot of her inspiration in natural areas such as Madoc, Algonquin Park and from wildlife centres she has visited. However, her photos aren’t limited to nature and wildlife, she also likes to photograph street scenes and anything that catches her eye. Good eye “Nicole is often told she has a unique and an amazing perspective,” Primrose said. “I get that a lot but mostly I get that I have a good eye,” Flynn said. The public can catch Flynn’s photography work starting today at the opening of the Toronto: Street Level exhibit as part of the AAF, which runs until Oct. 11. TTC disappointed with Metrolinx’s plans for LRT lines RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The CEO for the TTC says he’s disappointed about a decision made by Metrolinx to restrict the operation of four planned light rail transit lines (LRT) to the private sector. Andy Byford said he was concerned by the choice of Metrolinx to overrule the TTC and turn over the running of the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, Finch, Sheppard and Scarborough LRT lines to a private sector operator when the first of the lines begins running in 2020. Having the TTC in charge of operating the LRT lines would have been much simpler from a maintenance and operating standpoint, said Byford yesterday. “Our preference was to lead operations on the lines because it would have been simpler to integrate the systems,” said Byford. He said the TTC continues to work with Metrolinx on co-ordination efforts, and that discussions between the two parties remained “professional, productive and amicable.” In a Sept. 19 letter, Metrolinx informed the TTC it will work with Infrastructure Ontario to pursue an Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) process that will see private sector companies submit bids to operate and maintain the lines. It has used AFP on several projects including the planned air rail link to open in 2015. The decision to dismiss the TTC from the running of the LRT lines could set back transit service in Toronto over the long term, warns a city councillor. Joe Mihevc, former vice-chair of the TTC, said he is concerned Metrolinx’s decision will result in scheduling chaos for transit riders. “You’re creating multiple transit systems in this city and that’s not healthy,” said Mihevc, long-time councillor for St. Paul’s West yesterday. “You could have a different set of operating guidelines, unnecessary conflicts. Overall, this is bad for the city.” But his St. Paul’s counterpart Josh Matlow thinks the plan won’t make much of a difference to riders traveling between the LRT lines and the TTC who are more interested in being able to travel with ease. “People aren’t too concerned with the colour of paint on the trains.” He slammed the “parochial” attitudes of critics of private sector transit operators, saying the trend for transit planning is to create regional networks that integrate travel across multiple boundaries. Concerns about integrating the separate transit systems are unwarranted, said Metrolinx spokesperson Vanessa Thomas. She said riders will only have to pay one fare to use both transit systems, with the cost of the fare determined based on what the TTC charges at the time. He broke both his wrists in two places, broke his collarbone, but took his recovery from such injuries as a challenge. “Things you think are setbacks are things that move

you forward,” Whitfield said, adding athletes who have not overcome setbacks, don’t know how to deal with them - and they will come. “It’s nice to see someone that’s made it,” said Provost, who later presented Whitfield with a school pin and a pen. As an athlete, the twelfth grader said, “you train so hard and some days you feel like you’re going nowhere.” It was clear Whitfield and his achievements were stoking Olympic dreams in Scarborough.

Neil McCann, in Grade 10, asked Whitfield what went through his head when he won his gold medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. (Whitfield thought about the training he had done and people that helped him.) Later, McCann said he finished second in a triathlon recently and fell in love with the sport. He’s studied videos of Whitfield training, considers him his idol “by far,” and said it felt great just having the Olympic flagbearer at the Danforth

Avenue school. Tenth grader Carter Wood, who wanted to know how hard Whitfield had to train, said he was inspired watching the Olympics and “will push myself to get there” in track and field or the triathlon. Wood said people at Birchmount look up to Whitfield as a high-class athlete. “I think this will get a lot more kids out doing more sports and hopefully pushing for the Olympics,” he said. During the second of two school

assemblies Thursday, Sept. 20, Whitfield mentioned only one regret, that he “didn’t do a very good job” of juggling school and sports. He wishes he applied himself to his studies more, he said. Sadib Haque, also in Grade 10, had a different sort of question: “Do you get a lot of girls?” Whitfield laughed, and said he has two children and a wife he met 10 years ago. For asking the question, Haque briefly got to wear Whitfield’s gold medal on stage.
