"Music can get you far in life," one participant says MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
Aron Mebrahtu chose the cello because it seemed like the hardest instrument to learn. Seven years ago, he was among the first to join Axis Music’s program for kids at Scarborough’s Gordonridge Place, a Toronto Community Housing (TCH) complex in Southwest Scarborough. Aron, now 13, carried on with the cello. "It makes you feel better whenever you play," he said. And on Dec. 22, he was one of 15
children and youth to see the debut of a music video they star in. Before the screening, children, parents and the charity program’s volunteers at The Hub Mid-Scarborough watched a quintet of young Axis performers play two classical pieces, the Joyful Companion and May Time. "We hold the participants to high standards," Judith Manger, the group’s founder and cello teacher, said afterwards. "They’re required to practice five days a week." Axis started at Gordonridge because there’s incredible musical talent in Scarborough, but not enough access to music education, she said. The program moved to The Hub, on Eglinton Avenue at Brimley Road, two years ago, and still teaches
children living in community housing. "Music can get you far in life," said a boy named Candiga Alira, 12, who lives in a TCH building on Gilder Drive and had never played an instrument before joining. Now, he said, he might become a musician or singer. Directed by Zeesy Powers and shot in August, Watching the Clouds Go By has children as young as five singing and playing instruments around drawings they made. Jacob Mebrahtu, 12, who’s in the video, thought the song tells the story of a "lonely guy" who "kept running and running," while thinking about his family. Raphael Gebremedhin, 12, had another take. "I think it’s about somebody watching the clouds, and they’re relaxed," he said.
The program relies on volunteers to teach and maintain instruments. Adrian Anantawan, a violinist who’s performed at the White House and United Nations, said its young participants have already achieved so much. "I think they took their roles and responsibilities seriously," Anantawan said. "No matter what, they’ll take an understanding (from this) of what it takes to become excellent at something."

Scarborough student wins Zonta International scholarship ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Helen Shen has had success in both film and finance. The 21-year-old Agincourt resident and fourthyear University of Toronto student has made more than 30 short films for film competitions. She has also landed a job (after graduation) as a foreign exchange trader at BlackRock in New York City where she worked last summer as part of a paid internship. Shen recently won one of the 12 International Women in Business Scholarships from Zonta International, an organization of professionals empowering women
worldwide. Shen said she’s "incredibly lucky" to receive the $8,000 US award. "I’ve always made it very important throughout my years of university to apply for scholarships. It’s sort of like an extra class," she said, noting "this is the biggest scholarship" she’s ever won. "It really motivated me to want to do more and continue the work that I’m doing," Shen added. Shen is currently studying at the University of Toronto’s Rotman Commerce program, where she’s pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in the Economics and Finance program as well as a minor in Writing and Rhetoric.
Shen said breaking into the "very male-dominated" finance field was a huge achievement. "I remember going to a meeting during my internship and I was the only young woman in the entire room," she said. Shen also independently produced, directed and wrote more than 30 short films for local and international film competitions like the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, collaborative film teams and companies. "Filmmaking is my outlet to have some social justice and to portray stories that I think are meaningful," she said. "A lot of my films deal with diversity and equality . I try to touch
on a lot of different issues based on the stories that I hear." Shen said she plans to work in both film and finance in New York City for as long as she can. "It’s very difficult for me to choose between the two. I like them both so much." Shen said she also hopes to be involved in Zonta to "work toward empowering women." University of Toronto student and Scarborough resident Helen Shen recently received one of 12 International Women in Business Scholarships from Zonta International.

Shining the spotlight on the stories that matter In a city as large, diverse and ever-moving as Toronto, covering the news can often feel like a drop in a bucket. There’s so much happening here, and it’s a city full of strong communities that often carry their own unique identity. In the Metroland Media Toronto newsroom, we do our best to represent the communities we serve online and in print. Admittedly, we can’t do it all or be everywhere we’d like to be. That said, we’re still going to do our best to make an impact. So beginning this year we’re renewing our focus continuing to report on local news and events, city hall, crime and transit issues but we’re also introducing several new beats. We’re looking to find stories on topics that matter or are of interest to our audience. Topics that, in many cases, we really haven’t focused on before. Parenting, history, technology, health and schools were key selections we felt deserving of more attention. Considering how many struggle with the cost of living in the city, we’ve also dedicated a reporter to a ’Money Matters’ beat to help break down financial issues. Debt loads can be crippling and it’s shocking how many people lack the financial literacy to be able to manage it. How secure is our money in this digital age? These are areas we hope to explore. ’The Diverse City’ will aim to give voice to minority groups, indigenous people and the LGBTQ community, and investigate issues relating to how we’re all different - our successes in embracing that and the challenges that exist where it fails. All timely subjects for discussion considering the malcontent kicked up south of the border after president-elect Donald Trump’s win. How this affects us as Canadians remains to be seen, but we’ll be watching. Another area of the city we want to spotlight is what we’re calling ’The Other Toronto’. These are the pockets of population, much of it concentrated in the city’s suburbs, that are home to immigrant communities and working-class families. Often isolated and struggling with challenges like neighbourhood crime and poor education rates, these Torontonians deserve our attention. What stories of success, resilience and identity are happening in our backyards? What needs to happen to improve the lives of our neighbours? Mike Adler’s column today explains more. We want to be there for these people and tell their stories on a regular basis in the hopes it may make a difference down the line.

Going in search of The Other Toronto in 2017 There is more than one Toronto. More than a decade ago, the city, United Way, and the province saw poverty deepening around the edges of our freshly-amalgamated home. University of Toronto Professor David Hulchanski, in his The Three Cities Within Toronto, makes plain how fast the city has divided since the 1970s into an ever-wealthier centre and waterfront, and other places where incomes consistently dropped. The city chose nine "’hot spots’ of high need and low infrastructure" in 2005, then bumped that up to 13 "priority neighbourhoods". It pledged people in these neighbourhoods would get money, community hubs and help organizing themselves.
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto A few years ago, the city changed the "priority" label. Recalculating, it started calling its highest-needs districts Neighbourhood Improvement Areas because that sounded better, and today 31, out of 140 census neighbourhoods, are NIAs. Nearly all are in Toronto’s old suburban belt, and attached to other NIAs: northwest North York meets North Etobicoke’s Rexdale

that second Toronto through a car window or on the news, in buildings glimpsed after a shooting, or roads after a pedestrian dies running for a bus. But what happens in The Other Toronto should interest us as much as what happens on Queen Street or in Rosedale. It’s in this Toronto’s neighbourhoods where people on modest incomes can still afford to live. We need to hear from people in these neighbourhoods, and in 2017, I’m going to do my best to talk to them about the city they live in. Edges of Toronto is a column about how people see live in Toronto differently, depending on where they live. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

and Jamestown, and to the south a string of other NIAs through what was once the City of York. Go east, and Thorncliffe Park meets Flemingdon Park and Victoria Village in another corner of North York; below that, the former East York’s Crescent Town touches Oakridge across Victoria Park Avenue in Scarborough, where seven other NIAs clump together south of Highway 401. This happened to those neighbourhoods because industries left and a new wave of development never came. The apartments got older, the traffic crawled, people in the houses aged, subways weren’t built and MoneyMarts thrived. They became part of The Other Toronto. Most often, most of us see

Brian Graff mentioned ’Scarberia’ nickname for Scarborough MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Two Toronto councillors, Michael Thompson and MaryMargaret McMahon, are being sued by a man who says their comments at City Hall damaged his reputation. "I felt I had no choice but to defend myself," Brian Graff, who filed small claims court suits against both councillors, said in a Dec. 20 interview. A Beach resident who ran against McMahon for councillor in 2014, Graff started a petition in October against a wardboundary proposal which would split his neighbourhood and combine part of the Beach with a Scarborough ward. He spoke to a meeting of Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee on Oct. 26, arguing the Beach and Scarborough don’t belong together.
"Scarborough has the unfortunate reputation as ’Scarberia,’" because of its ’Big Box’ stores and strip malls, Graff said, while the Beach has more in common with "Roncesvalles and Ossington and places in the West End of Toronto than we do with ’out by the Zoo.’" In his statement of claim, Graff said he mentioned the nickname ’Scarberia’ because he was talking about Scarborough’s "suburban urban form, and The Plaintiff was clearly not using it in his own voice to directly denigrate Scarborough or the people of Scarborough." Thompson, a Scarborough Centre councillor, later said during the meeting he had heard "someone come here this morning and talk about Scarborough in a very disparaging way, and I am offended by that." gized during the meeting to "Scarborough Councillors and Scarborough residents for the negative comments that we have seen from some of my
some comments implying I had said disparaging things about Scarborough, and I didn’t." Graff, who is suing for $6,000 from each councillor said he wants "the record set straight," starting with apologies to him from Thompson and McMahon. Earlier this month, however, Thompson called Graff’s legal action against him "ridiculous." "I’m being sued for defending Scarborough," Thompson said. McMahon, reached on Dec. 23, said she doesn’t think she did anything wrong. After Graff’s deputation, she wanted to comment, she said, because "I could see the faces and the body language of the Scarborough councillors, and they were upset." Both the committee and council approved a 47-ward model for Toronto, one which would keep the boundaries of the Beach intact.
Beachers in the media, but especially from the deputant Brian Graff." McMahon, who said she won’t run for office again in 2018, reprised her apology during the Nov. 9 meeting of Toronto City Council, but didn’t name Graff. Graff, in his claim, said was "shocked and horrified" by comments from both councillors. He "suffered from emotional distress," he said, adding "news media and social media coverage have likely damaged his reputation" including his political reputation, "particularly should he run in the 2018 municipal election or stand for any other position as a candidate." "I wasn’t calling Scarborough ’Scarberia’ but I was referring to the fact it has that reputation," Graff said on Dec. 20. Thompson didn’t mention his name, Graff said, but "he made

It’s early January, and here we are: just days into the year that our country, the former Dominion of Canada, turns 150 years old. In Toronto and across the land, we’re going to be partying like we’re 200. We’ve already had a grand TO Canada With Love New Year’s Eve celebration at Nathan Phillips Square. Winterlicious will be celebrating its 15th year and our 150th, serving up birthday-themed culinary experiences. There’ll be photo contests and dance contests and a Toronto Newcomer Day. And Canada Day will morph into a fourday party the likes of which we’ve never seen. We’re not the first to reach this venerable age. In 1926, America’s 30th President Calvin Coolidge spoke at great length on the manifold virtues of that great, 150-year-old republic. America at 150 was in the middle of its own version of
DAVID NICKLE The City the "sunny ways" times that our charismatic young prime minister seems still to be basking in. It didn’t last, of course - a decade of consistent economic growth ground to a halt in the crash of ’29, and the poverty that had been limited to rural areas spread to the urban middle class. How are we, at 150? Well, we’re in a better state than our 241-year-old neighbour is right now. We continue to welcome newcomers to our country and have maintained at least a public equanimity that seems to have eluded
America as it prepares to swear in its 45th President Donald Trump. We do have a greater challenge before us than Coolidge apprehended when he confidently pointed to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States as guarantees of both virtue and safety. At 150, it’s fair to say that Canada alone cannot guarantee both those things. We’re coming of age in a world where both national virtue, and safety and security are open questions. It’s not just the changes in the United States that affect us, but all over the world. So as we prepare to celebrate this significant birthday, we should not only count our gifts. We should prepare to preserve them and perhaps, defend them.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders. Licensed Mortgage Agent
Rashida Riel, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the Scarborough, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans
on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debts. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Rashida Riel, RashidaRiel.ca, 1-888-334-6089.

Resolving to use smartphone less
PRIYA RAMANUJAM Millennial Mind At the same time, the 2016 Deloitte Global Mobile Consumer Survey reported 61 per cent of respondents from around the world check their smartphone within five minutes of waking up - and 88 per cent within 30 minutes. These studies point to something we already know. We are positively glued to our smartphones. For many, they are becoming an extension of our body. To what end, though? This obsession is causing distracted driving, adding to mental stress and resulting in fewer and fewer meaningful, uninterrupted conver-
sations. Our minds are constantly being pulled in a dozen directions, and we are rarely giving anything our undivided attention. A falsehood is created that leads us to believe that if we are unplugged for even five minutes, we are missing out. Unbeknownst to us, we are missing out in real life (or, more appropriately, IRL). I am not anti-mobile phone - one could be enabling you to read this column right now - but, I am resolving to put mine down a little more in 2017. I encourage you to do the same. Go, ahead, give it a try. In fact, turn off all screens for an hour. I promise you, when you plug back in, the world will be just as chaotic as you left it. Priya Ramanujam is a journalist, editor and co-founder of Urbanology Magazine. She is a proud lifelong Scarborough resident. Reach her @SincerelyPriya.

In the media, feel-good stories are more prevalent over the holidays. One such story - a Nova Scotian woman who invited nine strangers with nowhere else to go to her home for Christmas dinner - caught my attention. Beyond the generosity of this woman, one detail reported caught my eye: she had asked that everyone leave their cellphones in a basket at the door during dinner. She wanted everyone to interact with each other, rather than their screens. A novel idea, yes. I wonder what every holiday dinner or social function would be like with this type of rule in place. A recent survey by the Canadian Automobile Association revealed that one third of Canadian drivers say they’ve texted while stopped at a red light in the last month; that is despite increasing fines and penalties nationwide for this type of thing.

Toronto Armenians celebrate a year of refugee settlement At first, the community had to act without much information MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Canada promised to settle 25,000 Syrian refugees. Toronto’s Armenian Community did not know a tenth of that number would be coming to them. Days before the first planeload landed on Dec. 10, 2015, a committee of volunteers at the Armenian Community Centre straddling North York and Scarborough were told they would be meet the first group of Armenians from Syria. The centre’s church at Hallcrown Place holds 500 people at most, but in a year more than 1,000 of its members privately co-sponsored and settled more than 400 Syrian Armenian families. Most arrived within a few months, and caring for them pushed the centre’s resources to the limit, people involved in the effort there said. "We used to bring, maximum, 40 to 60 people in a
month. All of a sudden, we are going to have over 100 in one day - not in a month, in one day," said Marianne Davitjan, master of ceremonies at a celebration last month marking the centre’s year of success. But during the first weeks and months, the volunteers apparently could get little information from offices of Immigration and Citizenship Canada. "They didn’t even answer the phone. I mean, we were left alone. We had to decide what to do," recalled Apkar Mirakian, the man in charge of the resettlement program. Armenian real estate agents scoured the area for housing, and volunteers scrambled to make other arrangements when families arrived and co-sponsors were away. So many private sponsorships saved the government millions, he said, while the centre spent itself into "a dire situation," enrolling students in its

But the settlement was a great success, both mobilizing and revitalizing an Armenian community, con-
centrated in ScarboroughAgincourt, MarkhamUnionville and Don Valley East, built on waves of immigration. "They didn’t become a so-called burden on the system here," Mirakian said of
the new arrivals. Over 90 per cent of job seekers among them are now working, "paying their rents," said Ohannes Tchamichian, an Armenian Syrian who arrived last Dec. 15, on the second
plane. Tchmichian, his parents and sister were sponsored by a grandfather’s cousin, a man they hadn’t met, who "didn’t hesitate to do it for us" and is now a neighbour in Agincourt. Born and raised in Aleppo, Syria’s largest and most devastated city, Tchmichian said the country needs 30 years to rebuild, and the war has spread beyond its borders. "The infrastructure is destroyed, the history is destroyed," he said. "They are not calling it World War Three, but it is." Vanig Garabedian was on the first plane last Dec. 10, with his wife and three daughters. He was met by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Pearson Internation Airport. "All the way here we felt the utmost dignity and humanity," said Garabedian, who said newcomer’s role is to integrate, like someone "once again reborn," learning the language, the streets, the culture. He’s sure this wave of newcomers will make Canada a better place.
Are you constantly turning up the volume on the television? This makes watching television challenging for you and loud to people around you.
insidetoronto.com
Do you find yourself constantly raising the volume on your television? Do commercials seem louder? Is your family always asking you to turn the volume down? Hearing the television can be a common problem even for people who can hear everything else just fine. Fortunately, the rechargeable Phonak Audéo™ B-R hearing aid has been specifically designed to improve your television listening experience, allowing you to enjoy the shows you love without disrupting the people around you. Frequently turning up the volume on the television can be one of the first signs of an undetected high-frequency hearing loss. This type of hearing loss is caused by damage to microscopic cells deep within our inner ears called “hair cells.” Normally, these hair cells detect incoming sounds and change them into information our brain uses to hear. With a high-frequency hearing loss, the hair cells that let us hear soft, high-pitched speech sounds are damaged, which can make speech sound unclear or mumbled.
Most people won’t notice this drop in speech clarity right away, because they are usually listening to only one or two people in a quiet area, and get plenty of visual cues from the person talking. When watching television, there can be loud music in the background, people speaking fast or with an accent, and you cannot always see the face of the person talking. While turning up the volume helps a little, it will not improve the clarity you are missing out on.
Fortunately, a new hearing aid has been designed with this problem in mind. Programmed to fit your unique listening needs, the rechargeable Phonak Audéo B-R hearing aids will significantly improve your understanding of television, while keeping the volume at a much more comfortable level. These advanced devices are completely selfadjusting with no buttons to push, dials to turn, or batteries to change. You’ll be free to enjoy the shows you love while hearing your absolute best. Connect Hearing wants to help you hear the TV better. Call 1.888.408.7377 or visit connecthearing.ca/recharge today and register for your free hearing test*. Qualified candidates will receive a no-obligation trial of the Phonak Audéo B rechargeable hearing aid, so you can hear for yourself how these hearing aids will help you hear your favourite show.

Young Syrians happy to volunteer at Scarborough food bank MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com On Dec. 28, Heba Diab and her friend Hanan Nanaa sorted and handed out food at Scarborough’s Dorset Park Community Hub. Not only did this teach them new things about Canada, but it was something Nanaa, 19, said she was glad to do to "show the Canadian people who the Syrians are." In November, the YMCA of Greater Toronto started an Arabic Newcomer Youth Leadership Development program in Scarborough to connect Syrian newcomers ages 16 to 19 with things they need, and encourage their interaction with Canadians. It’s grown to include about 40 youth, who learn about different social norms in Canada and winter activities such as ice skating, while gaining "skills that will get them a job someday," said Karim Brahimi, the program’s newcomer youth adviser. Now 25, he arrived from Algeria at 14, so Syrian youth know he’s been through everything they have as newcomers. "They see me as a brother, not as an adult or teacher." The young Syrians regularly meet at the Toronto

Milner Business Court in northeast Scarborough and visit the Scarborough YMCA, but the group also sends volunteers to places such as a Markham Road retirement home and the food bank at Dorset Park. "Canadian people help us. We have to help them too," said Nanaa, who is from Aleppo - a city torn apart in Syria’s civil war. She came to Canada 10 months ago, settled in Scarborough, and wants to study medicine or pharmaceutical science. "I like to communicate with new people, Canadian people, to do something I didn’t do in Syria," said Diab, who is also 19 and
comes from a city called Homs. She now lives in Thorncliffe Park and wants to pursue a career in science, possibly chemistry. Both also want to share their own culture, including its foods, with Canadians. "You know shawarma? Everyone knows shawarma," Diab said, laughing. Brahimi said the group, which is also open to young Syrians outside Scarborough, is planning a March break cultural event featuring crafts and traditional dances. "It’s a way of my youth saying ’thank you’ to the community," he said.
