MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com People line up outside 4100 Lawrence Ave. E. to get a free bag of groceries from the food bank. They wait for hours, get assigned a random number, then wait again. But while they’re waiting, 5n2 Kitchens is there, three times each week, in cramped rooms at the base of this Kingston-Galloway apartment tower, giving people a hot meal. The volunteer group has grown over four years to serve more than 800 scratch-cooked meals a week in Kingston-Galloway-Orton (KGO) Park, but last month told supporters its future is in doubt without a new home kitchen. "We want to be in the community. We want to be in the middle of this area, where we can give our clients more support," founder Seema David said as 5n2 and helpers from the building handed people bowls of chili or spaghetti squash. "People without jobs in the community are going

Originally from Chennai, South India, David and her husband Roopan met families who came to Scarborough without savings. Many were going to food banks, or staying quiet about their needs. Most city services addressing hunger, such as soup kitchens, were downtown. The Davids worship at Global Kingdom Minis-

tries, a Markham Road church, and using its kitchen in 2014, they started making soup and serving it to people at East Scarborough Storefront. 5n2 grew from there. At 4100 Lawrence, it’s greatly appreciated, though its volunteers are only there an hour - they go to serve other meals at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church nearby, while the food’s still warm.

help 5n2. Marisa Roberto said she’s seen the food bank line grow. "A lot of people are shamed," Roberto said on why hunger in KGO isn’t widely known. Last month, 5n2 launched a GoFundMe campaign, announcing it "will close its doors in 2018" without a new facility, because the church won’t have room for the expand-

Mohammed Raffik said many in the queue at 4100 Lawrence are senior citizens or on disability. "They’re sick, and they have no one to take care of them," he said after getting chili last week. "People with mental illnesses, a lot of the time, they don’t feed themselves or cook," added Jelese Bush, one of many building residents who volunteers to

ing operation. "We were told we have to go, but we weren’t given a timeline," said David, who met church management on Aug. 29 and said it’s now unclear when 5n2 must go. Godfrey Adderly, the church’s missions pastor, said 5n2 had misunderstood the situation. "We have reassured them and reasserted our commitment to house them for the foreseeable future," Adderly said. During 5n2’s expansion, however, Global Kingdom, with 2,000 congregants, hasn’t used the kitchen any less, and the church supports the group’s search for a larger home, said Adderly. Preparing meals at the church means battling for space, with storage limited and menus constantly changing. Still, David believes the work is "what I feel I’ve been called to do." With enough funds, 5n2 can do more than deliver meals. It can teach people to prepare them, and help them budget with nutrition in mind, she said.

Volunteer group bursting at seams

Wall gets mural after ’hard year’ MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The long wall separating Chester Le townhouse complex from Victoria Park Avenue was blank for decades. Not anymore. Artists inspired by youth of the Toronto Community Housing community are painting scenes on sections of the wall, which stretches for blocks

north of Finch Avenue. "They wanted something they could be proud of," Adrian Hayles, a muralist working with a grant from StreetArt Toronto, said last week. The work, to be unveiled at noon on Sept. 30, follows a "particularly hard year" for Chester Le, said Lee Soda, executive director of Agincourt Community Services Association (ACSA).

Samatar Farah, 24, was shot dead in the complex in April, two days after another incident in which three other people were wounded there by gunfire. Toronto police later suggested Farah had nothing to do with violence, but was targeted simply because he lived in Chester Le. Soda said the mural was a way to highlight

positive aspects of life in Chester Le. The complex is given a "negative connotation" by outsiders, but there’s much potential there, said ACSA worker Raeetha Raveendranathan, adding Bennita Mensah, Thomas Braendel, Shuley Mohammed, Zakaria Abdi and Randy Pyne - youth involved with the mural want it to reflect the real community.

Bell marks end of treatment

FREE

Hearing Aid Trial

“ Why do I hear but not understand? ” If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult. The right hearing aid could help you improve your comprehension.

FREE trial offer ends September, 29th 2017 21 Day FREE Trial

Hear the difference hearing aids can make. Try the latest advanced or premium digital hearing aids for 21 days, risk-free. Our hearing experts will perform a FREE hearing assessment and fit you with hearing aids suited to your loss. There’s no cost or obligation to participate.

From now on, the sound of a bell at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s Centenary campus means a child’s cancer treatment there has ended. Grateful parents donated a brass bell - ringing one is now a widespread way to signal conclusion of treatment - inscribed with a poem to Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s (SRH) Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario clinic last month. "The doctors, nurses and other staff saved my daughter’s life and I will forever hold them all in my heart," said Nicolle Georgiev, whose daughter Sophia, age seven, was treated at the hospital for leukemia in 2012. "We are so excited to be able to share the bell with the many children and families who receive outstanding care in the clinic," Georgiev added in a release. Ringing the bell during a ceremony on Aug. 31 were Sophia and Jerzie LeDuc, 12, who was treated for a brain

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Ontario’s Liberal government is supporting the Bridletowne Community Hub, and trying to erase any doubts the project won’t get built. "We’re all doing this, all of us," Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins told a crowd at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s Birchmount campus Wednesday. Assembled there were City of Toronto politicians, including Mayor John Tory, and officials of YMCA of Greater Toronto and several other community agencies, all partners in a facility which, until recently, seemed stuck on the drawing board. When completed, the hub will house one of North America’s largest chronic kidney disease programs, a YMCA, community space and offices for Hong Fook Mental Health Association and other nonprofit groups.

Agincourt residents Lai Chu, Pat Sherman and others came up with the idea eight years ago, wanting to see something done with half the former Timothy Eaton Business and Technical Institute property on Bridletowne Circle. "We never gave up," Chu recalled at Wednesday’s announcement. "And we’re finally here." More than 6,000 patients are treated for chronic kidney problems at the hospital or three satellite sites, but need is growing faster than Scarborough and Rouge can handle. Hoskins, announcing the hospital portion of the hub, said it will have 45 dialysis stations, including 19 new ones, and nine hemodialysis stations for training patients who want dialysis at home. Ethel Doyle, the nephrology program’s director, said she’d be forever grateful. "The hard work of so many has created a voice that has been heard," she

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Councillor Norm Kelly high fives Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, as local MPP Soo Wong looks on at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s Birchmount campus, following last week’s announcement of funding for the hospital’s chronic kidney disease program. said. Dr. Paul Tam, the hospital’s head of nephrology, said the hub would help treat kidney patients earlier and better, helping them manage other chronic diseases, such as diabetes,

which lead to kidney failure. Hoskins wouldn’t disclose the amount of ministry support - to avoid telling potential bidders what province is prepared to pay - but said it’s in "many tens

of millions." Also unresolved is the role of the YMCA, which was to hold the property lease and operate the hub for at least 20 years. It’s been unable to raise enough funds for the nonmedical part of the building. This summer, the YMCA failed to meet a deadline set by Toronto City Council, which required the partnership to be renegotiated by December. In a recent interview, the hospital’s new CEO, Elizabeth Buller, said though the YMCA remains committed, the hospital was discussing a plan to sign a separate lease for the medical portion. "We’re working at not being completely tied to (the YMCA’s) timing. That will be positive, so we can at least get started with the hospital portion," Buller said. Scarborough-Agincourt MPP Soo Wong and

Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Norm Kelly got the highest praise Wednesday for moving the project forward. Both were called "relentless" in insisting the hub be built. Kelly predicted the province’s commitment will be "the catalyst that will inspire the federal government to come forward with the necessary funds to build the YMCA and social services portion of the community hub." Hoskins said the ministry is about to start a planning process to determine Scarborough’s health needs over the next 20 years.

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

New blood-alcohol rules just make sense The news that the federal government might lower the legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers might seem to have come out of nowhere. After all, thanks to concerted efforts by lawmakers and police, the rate of impaired driving incidents in Canada dropped to a 30-year low in 2015. Yet despite this progress, there is no better time than now to consider tougher drunk driving laws in this country. In less than a year, a new kind of impaired driver could be menacing Canada’s roads - one who just legally smoked marijuana. It is vital that if the federal Liberals permit the recreational use of cannabis starting next summer, they get tougher with drivers caught under the influence of drugs. As they do that, a stricter law on how much people can drink before driving is also very much in order. The federal government is justifiably concerned that when recreational marijuana is legal, more people may drive under the influence of the drug. And some of those irresponsible people might even drive after mixing marijuana and alcohol. That potentially lethal combination is reason enough for Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to consider lowering the legal blood limits for drivers from the current 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood to 50 milligrams. Rules that helped limit drinking and driving in the past might be too lax if booze and pot are mixed. Yet her proposal has other merits. While decades of anti-drunk-driving campaigns have produced positive results, we still have a long way to go. A recent study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranked Canada first out of 19 wealthy countries for the percentage of traffic deaths linked to alcohol impairment. Canada’s current rules were established in 1969 and based on research that concluded the risk of being in a car crash was twice as likely if a driver has 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in his or her system. It turns out that’s wrong. New research shows the risk of being in a collision is almost triple at the 80-milligrams level and rises exponentially when alcohol levels are even higher. Many European countries, as well as Australia, have wisely lowered the limit to 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Canadians are headed down a new and unfamiliar highway with legalized marijuana. We can make the journey safer with stronger laws prohibiting every kind of impaired driving.

Toronto’s immigrants are cheated at work Winli Apparel Manufacturing shut down in Scarborough, and its sewing-machine operators, making little more than minimum wage, got four weeks’ pay. Chinese-speaking immigrants, some worked for Winli for more than 20 years. Thirteen got legal help to get the rest of what they were owed. Winli was ordered to pay them $26,000, and didn’t. The province dragged the company to court and, on Aug. 21, fined it $49,000, none of which the workers will see. That’s normal. Avvy Go, director of Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, represented the workers, and says many won’t approach the Ministry of Labour if they think they can keep their job.

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto When they hear "We’re shutting down," or "You’re fired," it’s often too late to collect, she said. How much some Greater Toronto employers cheat workers was spelled out in the clinic’s report last year, Sweet and Sour, covering 184 restaurant workers’ experiences over the previous three years. If you’re a non-Englishspeaking newcomer, Go

says, chances are you’re more willing to accept less than you’re entitled to when employers say, "That’s just the way it is." The report’s findings: 43 per cent of the restaurant workers earned less than minimum wage, 57 per cent didn’t get vacation pay, and 20 per cent were owed wages. Faced with yawning gaps in provincial enforcement, the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto and other groups are encouraging volunteers to talk to Chinese-speaking workers about their rights. In the early 1990s, Ontario had a Wage Protection Fund which, if it hadn’t been erased, could have paid the Winli employees. The catalyst for the fund was another clinic case,

Lark Manufacturing, which shut its factory on Carlaw Avenue in 1988, owing 148 people, nearly all of them Chinese, more than $500,000. Its owners opened another factory nearby. Bringing the wage fund back, Go argues, would lead to fewer injustices like Winli. Meanwhile, owners of the Regal restaurant chain around Toronto are finally going to court in November, after being ordered by the ministry to pay former employees $475,000. Go, whose clinic represents 60 of them, doubts they’ll get a dime. They may get satisfaction. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

10 BUSINESS

A man of time HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

W

atch repairman Shane Ede is hunched over a 1960s IWC Schaffhausen wrist watch in his apartment on Triller Avenue in Parkdale, his eyes mere millimetres away from the most intricate portions of the watch, placing small pieces back where they belong. He’s trying to fix its stem, the component which allows the owner to wind the watch to the correct time. This is what he does seven days a week. The 69-year-old hunkers down in front of his desk in his bedroom for hours at a time engrossed in repairing everything from pocket watches to mantle clocks and everything in between. He’s Shane the watch whisperer and has been for the past 41 years. From antique Rolexes, to Omegas to Swiss Military watches, if it’s broken, chances are Shane is the man to can fix it. Up until four years ago, he got the majority of his business from dealers, but that all changed when a customer wrote a glowing Yelp review. Since then the referrals just kept rolling in. "It just took off. Kaboom! Thousands of people found me on the internet," Shane said. "People have sent (watches) and travelled here for me to fix watches from India and Venezuela who said they’d found me online. It’s bizarre. "The irony of this isn’t lost on Shane. He calls his business a "dying hobby" that is as traditional as a shoe cobbler. And yet he’s found a way, albeit accidentally, to thrive in the modern, digital age with the help of watch forums and reviews found on the internet for those who know where to look. "Isn’t it wild?" he says laughing. He started out fixing watches as a side gig while he taught English composition for business students at Ryerson University in ’76. He was an apprentice to an older watch repairman in the city after he took in a clock for repair for his mother. Six months later he opened his own home business and never looked back. "All of sudden 10 years has gone by then 20 years and all of a sudden I really know what I’m doing now, all of a sudden my fingers are like a ballet. You can almost watch them do their job and that takes over," Shane explains. "I don’t know how to describe it. It’s something that’s just too much fun."

Shane Ede is breathing new life into an old trade, thanks to the internet

Tamil Fest welcomes Trudeau Tamil Fest, one of Toronto’s largest street festivals, broke the 200,000 mark for attendance, and was congratulated for it by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau himself. "I’m happy to report that my Kothu Roti is getting better," Trudeau told crowds on Scarborough’s Markham Road on August 26, referring to one of many Tamil dishes prepared at the event. Trudeau visited a lifeboat in which Tamil refugees arrived off Newfoundland 31 years ago, at the start of Sri Lanka’s lengthy and devastating civil war. Though the war between separatist Tamils and the island’s Sinhalese majority ended in 2009, the appearance of more ships

Other Canadian politicians paid tribute during the two-day festival to the Tamil-Canadian community’s achievements, including Toronto Mayor John Tory and Scarborough-Rouge Park MP Gary Anandasangaree, whose motion to recognize January as Tamil Heritage Month passed the House of Commons unanimously this year. Tamil Fest had hundreds of performers and merchants on the road, south of Passmore Avenue.

Bad things happen when

food scraps

& recycling get together.

Flopsie Sarah & Rudy

insidetoronto.com

When you throw food scraps in your Blue Bin, food residue and particles get soaked up by paper and can ruin large batches of otherwise good recyclables. In fact, last year an estimated 45,000 tonnes of organic waste and garbage was incorrectly put into recycling. Meaning a lot of ruined recyclables ended up in the City’s landfill. And that is a very bad thing indeed. Learn what goes in your Blue Bin and what doesn’t at toronto.ca/recycleright

AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com A new $23-million French Catholic high school has opened in Scarborough. École secondaire catholique Père-Philippe-Lamarche, located at 2850 Eglinton Ave. E. near McCowan Road, will house approximately 100 French-speaking students living in the city’s east end and beyond from Grades 7 to 9. Staff and students were joined by board and government officials for the launch on Tuesday. Jean Bouchard, the school’s principal, told The Scarborough Mirror it will expand to Grade 12 over time. "We’ll have over 500 students," he said. "We’ll have different, very important programs." Those programs include an International Baccalaureate (international education) program, physical education, leadership, technology, and art programs. In 2015, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site where officials announced the building of the school. The school board, Conseil sco-

They also have nine elementary schools in the city. Bouchard, who has worked for the board since 2001, said he has seen an increase in the amount of students enrolling in its schools. "We have over 17,000 students in central Ontario," he said. "We grow about six to seven per cent every year. It’s a lot."

Making room for Durham Transit buses at the busy Scarborough Centre SRT station might make it easier to get between Oshawa and Scarborough, but the Toronto Transit Commission heard that letting the 905-area transit service jostle for space with TTC buses would be too dangerous. "I have spent a fair bit of time at the Scarborough terminal and it’s incredibly congested," TTC CEO Andy Byford told the commission at its Sept. 5 meeting. Byford noted that the station’s bus bays are already so crowded that different routes often have to share a platform, and that adding more buses to the mix would only make things worse. "If buses continually leave late because customers can’t find the right bus, you’ll hold us to account. If we see an increase in bus to bus contact, you’ll hold us to account. The more we put into the Scarborough Centre station, that’s less room to expand the TTC," said Byford. He was responding to questions surrounding a request by Scarborough East Coun. Paul Ainslie, who made the case that currently there

is no good way for people to get between Scarborough and Durham Region to the east. Ainslie noted that inter-regional connectivity is an objective of the provincial Big Move program, and currently Durham residents can only connect to Scarborough through the University of Toronto Scarborough campus and the Rouge Hill GO Station. "My residents would like that bus station now," he said. "I would like at least one bus bay where Durham can get into the Town Centre." The report indicated that the station cannot accommodate an additional bus. "The 13 TTC bus bays at the station are served by 14 TTC routes," the report reads. "At the busiest times, more than 120 bus trips per hour each day are operated through the terminal, and more than 56,000 customer boardings and alightings are made at the terminal." Based on those numbers, the report says that the terminal station should have 17 bus bays. When the subway goes in, however, that will change. The new terminal at Scarborough Centre will have 34 bus bays, with 24 for the TTC. That would include one Durham bay.
