his youngest sister’s ballet recital. After the event, Brooks attended a house party where he thought he’d have a few beers and then call it a night. But that never happened. “I ran into some old school hockey friends I’d grown up with, and one thing led to another, and we were down to have a wild night,” Brooks said. And they hopped from one party to another. At one point during the night, Brooks

The British Columbia resident wasn’t yet “blackout drunk” and stopped in front of his car thinking something bad could happen. “We all have that voice inside that warns us at times,” Brooks said. “That was one moment where I was still consciously aware of what was going on and had that opportunity to make the better choice and chose not to.” Brushing off the warning, Brooks con>>>a mistake, page 8
Scarborough-Rouge River voters will choose on Sept. 1 between a local councillor, their public school trustee and the party that has held onto the provincial riding since it was created. On the morning of Aug. 3, Premier Kathleen Wynne announced a byelection for the riding, but Ontario’s major parties have been campaigning there for nearly two months. Liberals have kept Scarborough-Rouge River in their fold provincially since 1999, and Bas Balkissoon defeated all opponents there since he was first elected in 2005. On March 22, however, the veteran MPP resigned without explanation, though weeks later he said he wanted to spend more time with family. In a nomination battle in early June, Liberals chose Piragal Thiru, a first-time candidate who describes himself as a community organizer and transit expert. He’s up against two men who

Scarborough Community Multicultural Festival starts Friday In a summer of free festivals, the one coming to Scarborough’s Albert Campbell Square this weekend sets itself apart through its purpose. Stretching over three days, the Scarborough Community Multicultural Festival is a chance to reach local residents, including so-called “at-risk” youth. Such a gathering with musical entertainment, from this Friday to Sunday, can bring people together and “re-establish pride of ownership” for Scarborough, one community leader says. “Organizing a festival may not be a conventional method, but it is getting their attention,” Joy Robertson, president of Scarborough Residents Unite and a festival co-producer added in a press release. “While we have their
attention, we can embrace, empower and steer them in the right direction,” she said. This second annual fest is on from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. all three days in the square, which is just south of Scarborough Town Centre on Borough Drive. It features live DJs, vendors, a children’s activities corner, a beer tent and a entertainment line-up, hosted by emcees Kevin Carrington (The Voice of TO) and Tatiana of missgo2girl.com. Scheduled artists include King Fabuloso, Empress Justice, Connector and Yung Muse, but it’s possible the festival will add some late surprises. Just a day before the first fest last October, organizers revealed a last-minute headline, Drake. This time, the event is
Conservation authority stabilizing shoreline path in Guildwood Work to stabilize a shoreline path below Scarborough’s Guild Park will be done over the next three weeks, says a local volunteer group. In announcing the project, Friends of Guild Park and Gardens called metal reinforcement bars in rubble below the park “dangerous and unsightly.” The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority ( TRCA), responsible for the Lake Ontario shoreline, started placing about 30 truckloads of clean fill below the park, Aug. 2. “The TRCA is doing this work after the Guildwoood Village Community Association has raised concerns about the poor condi-

That includes screenings of Pele: Birth of a Legend (Friday at 6 p.m.), Sally’s Way, described as “a beautiful tale of childhood persistence” (Saturday at 4 p.m.), and Calypso Dreams (Saturday at 6 p.m.), “an intimate documentary about the great Calypso stars.” The community festival opens with a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday in the square, and at 1:30 p.m. there’s a Canadian citizenship ceremony in which 100 people will take their oath to become Canadians. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Ontario’s lieutenant-governor, is expected to attend both events. There will also be dance performances, and what

tion of this popular walking area along Lake Ontario,” the Friends group said on Facebook last week. During construction, the conservation authority is blocking access to the area, including to a roadway down to the shore from Guildwood Parkway, weekdays between 7 a.m and 5 p.m. The shoreline below the park may be popular, but the TRCA says it is not safe to walk on. Its Scarborough Waterfront Project, which is still under study, proposes a plan for safe access to the shore through a series of new waterfront green spaces below the Bluffs connecting Bluffers Park with East Point Park at the mouth of Highland Creek.

Though associated with the federal New Democrats and Liberals in the past, Raymond Cho ran for the Progressive Conservatives in the riding in 2014. He’s back for another try, this time with former Toronto councillor Doug Ford as a campaign manager.
‘Ignored’ A joint statement Wednesday from PC Leader Patrick Brown and Raymond Cho said the riding has been ignored under the Liberals. “The people of Scarborough-Rouge River have the opportunity to send Premier Wynne a strong message that enough is enough,” the release quotes Cho, whose council seat covers about half the riding, as saying.
“Having had the privilege of representing Scarborough residents for 25 years on city council, I understand the challenges and opportunities that face our community.” Neethan Shan, elected as the area’s public school trustee earlier this year, took on Balkissoon on two previous occasions. He’s a past president of the Ontario NDP, has worked with youth in the riding and is the executive director of the Council of Agencies Serving South Asians. Shan and NDP Leader A n d re a Ho r w a t h h a v e stressed his credentials as a “champion” for better public education in the area. Thiru, in a statement Wednesday, said his Liberal party’s values “are the values that allowed my family to come to this country and to this community as refugees when I was 11 years old. “I want to get to work for

Remaining vigilant against impaired driving
I
t’s sad we still have to warn people about the dangers of impaired driving; one would have hoped the message had been received loud and clear by now, but that is unfortunately not the case. In today’s editions of our papers, we look at the consequences of impaired driving, from the standpoint of a woman whose life was forever altered after being struck by a driver who was impaired, and from the perspective of a young man who killed one of his best friends after crashing a car while driving drunk. These are tragic stories, and in both cases they could have been avoided. We ask all our readers to think hard about the toll impaired driving can take on the lives of so many people and to make sure they take the necessary steps to avoid such tragedies. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of not driving impaired – be it from alcohol, prescription drugs or marijuana. It’s critical for all to remember OuR ViEW that alcohol is not the only cause of impaired driving. Be responsible As our stories show, there’s concern among police before getting growing about what impact Canada’s behind wheel new marijuana laws will have on impaired driving. Police are preparing for a spike in drivers “one toke over the line”, and the Ontario Provincial Police are training officers to specifically detect drug-impaired drivers. While police admit that it will remain to be seen whether drug-impaired driving increases in Canada, evidence from the state of Colorado (where marijuana is legal) indicates one in eight of its impaired driving citations in 2014 involved pot use. Clearly, as the federal government moves toward relaxing Canada’s marijuana-use laws it will have to take into account how drug-impaired driving is determined by police, and what standards the courts will be setting for criminal charges. It is critical that the message gets out that drugimpaired driving is as socially and morally unacceptable as drunk driving. Further complicating the dangers on our roads is the “grey” area of those driving (often unknowingly) under the influence of prescription drugs. Patients and doctors must improve their level of understanding about the impact of prescription drugs and medications on the ability of a person to drive, and make sure that information is available. We all need to take a greater level of responsibility about our actions, and the decisions we make, before we get behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Bloor bike lanes address city’s growing cycling needs I’m usually pretty careful riding a bike on Toronto streets, but last week I had a near thing. Riding down Coxwell Avenue on my way to a Mayor John Tory press event, I thought I could make it past some road work that pushed very close to streetcar tracks, and as it turned out, I couldn’t, not quite. So when the front tire slipped into the streetcar track, it went over and I nearly did too; somehow managing to get off the bike without really falling myself. Lucky me. Seriously. Lucky me. In July, a study by Ryerson University and the University of British Columbia on bike accidents in Toronto found that fully a third of the serious ones were caused by cyclist’s tires either getting caught in the tracks or slipping across them. Usually, there were no
david nickle the city bike lanes and the cyclists reported trying to maneuver around parked cars or other obstacles. And it happens a lot. Between 2005 and 2014, the city has charted 1,232 cyclist collisions – a number that doesn’t include simple mishaps. The whole thing adds a bit of perspective to the new pilot project that got underway this week to try out separated bike lanes on Bloor Street. There are no streetcar tracks on Bloor Street, but there are an awful lot of cars, and the stretch through the Annex is a well-documented hazard for cyclists trying to get across town. It’s been a pain for auto drivers, during this relatively short construction period, with two of the
four lanes of traffic there shut down, and there will probably be some more pain – or at least mild discomfort – as the pilot runs its course. Drivers are going to have to get used to it, because the status quo is a precarious place right now. More people are choosing to bike to and from work than ever. And while the city has provided some good cycling infrastructure – a total of 558.4 kilometres of on-street bike lanes, before the Bloor project is counted – Toronto also has 82 kilometres of those tirecatching streetcar tracks to contend with. Cycling is safer in Toronto, but it’s hardly as safe as it might be. The authors of the study that appeared in the BMC Public Health journal in July had a couple of recommendations short of getting rid of all those streetcar tracks. Bike lanes, obviously,
are crucial – but they also recommend fully-separated streetcar tracks, like those on Spadina or St. Clair. The city can do other things, too. Simply patching potholes on well-cycled routes – or all routes, for that matter – would go a long way to making a safer, smoother commute for cyclists. Providing more places to safely lock bikes might not make things safer, but might be more effective. But in the short term, running a successful pilot project along one of the great, city-spanning streets, and working diligently to build out the bike plan that Toronto Council approved earlier in the summer, is an excellent step toward syncing the city’s form with the needs of a growing number of its residents.

Presto plan forgets marginalized residents Several months back I caught wind of early talks that the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) would be adopting Presto. Not just as another fare option, but possibly the only option (aside from paying cash). My immediate reaction: what will happen to the many participants of youth and community programming who rely on tokens in order to participate?

ConCern I tweeted as such and got a vague response from @ TTCHelps that no definite solution for this was known as yet, but the issue would be looked into. Following recent news reports about TTC’s plan to eliminate tokens and tickets in replace of the plastic green cards by mid-2017, I saw a Facebook post from Afi Browne, a youth worker at Delisle Youth Services. “I am deeply concerned about the TTC’s plan to eliminate tickets, tokens and metro
priya ramanujam MILLENNIAL MIND passes . . .” it read. “For the youth programs I work with, tokens are crucial, it is one of the ways we keep programming accessible especially for the most marginalized folks.” The post received a whopping 119 “reactions” (including an angry emoticon from me) and 121 shares. It seems I was not alone in my sentiment. Cardboard Card One Facebook user, Corey Scott, shared a response on Browne’s post that he received from TTC via e-mail when he inquired about this issue. According to the customer service representative in communication with Scott, the TTC is working on a single fare solution – a cardboard Presto card with one fare applied to it. The e-mail stated that once the details are worked out, the city and
all social service agencies who rely on bulk token purchases would be notified. I predict this “solution” will likely be a logistical nightmare to implement for many organizations. Not to mention for individuals working at a grassroots community level – who don’t buy in bulk, wouldn’t necessarily be on the TTC’s radar as a “social service agency” and often keep reserve tokens on hand for supporting youth in their day-to-day affairs. This response demonstrates that some of the city’s most marginalized individuals remain a mere afterthought in these types of wide-sweeping decisions. If the TTC wants to implement Presto by 2017 in order to make it easier for certain customers, fine. Just don’t let it be at the expense of creating even more barriers for others. A mistake that lingers, more than 16 years later >>>from page 1 tinued drinking and partying hard. “By the time we were leaving the last house party, we were all really drunk,” said Brooks. “We were double digit drinks for sure. I’d say well over 10, probably pushing 20.” Three of Brooks’ buddies got in a cab, but before it left, one friend, Brendon, got out and opted to travel with Brooks. “I was like the stubborn idiot who wanted to drive drunk,” Brooks said. “From what I’ve heard, people were trying to get my keys away from me, but I had an extra pair in the glove box. ... In hindsight, too bad somebody didn’t just punch me out.” Brooks and Brendon were speeding to another party. “Going 110 to 130 in a 70 zone, just stupid. Beers are open, tunes cranked, totally not paying attention,” Brooks said. “I don’t remember what happened. I missed a corner, and the car hit a road divider and went airborne, hit the ground and rolled multiple times.” Weeks later, Brooks woke up in an intensive care unit and learned that he had been in a crash and that he was paralyzed from the chest down. “A little bit later, I asked about who was
with me and found out my buddy Brendon passed away. That was the worst thing I’d ever heard in my life,” Brooks said. “He’s gone and dealing with that was a nightmare.” Brooks contemplated suicide but was confined to a bed, too weak to even move. With the support of his family, best friend and Brendon’s family, Brooks’ outlook began to change. “It allowed me a chance not to totally give up,” he said of the support. After a two-month hospital stay, Brooks was transferred to a rehabilitation centre where he learned to dress himself, roll over in bed, sit up and get around in a wheelchair. It was a new life for Brooks, who had been an active man. “I could play every sport decently. I skateboarded, I snowboarded, I played hockey. I was just go, go, go, and then all of a sudden, boom, I’m in a chair.” His future career as an electrician was over, his girlfriend of two-and-a-half years left him and he faced criminal charges from the crash. “And dealing with the fact that I killed a buddy, there was so much to deal with,” he said. Brooks pled guilty to dangerous driving

causing death; a charge of impaired driving causing death was dropped. “I lost my licence for three years. There were community hours and probation but no jail time,” Brooks said. “I still look at it as light.” Brooks said he felt something good had to come from the tragedy, and about two years after the collision, he began sharing his story at schools in the hopes of preventing drinking and driving. “I used to be a server and I’d be scared if I had 10 people at a table, so getting in front of an entire gymnasium of teenagers was terrifying, but once I started talking, I just sunk into a bit of a groove,” he said. “Then after, I was just mobbed by kids and they were crying, thanking me and shaking my hand. There was a connection made.” Brooks has now delivered more than 1,000 presentations across Canada and the U.S. “It’s been a saving grace for me to have a positive outlet for what happened,” he said. “I can’t say I’m proud of the journey that led me on it, but I found it and I just keep looking forward.”

A place where drive-in movies, board games beat Pokemon Go Having been up north the last couple of weeks on vacation I’m not really tuned into Scarborough stuff or city stuff at all. Around this time of year many of us take off to the cottage, camping, or visit friends out of town. It got me thinking about some of the key differences between what’s happening in our city and what’s happening in the Ontario countryside this summer. Bears are a big issue. I had one visit the cottage property twice last year and that really matters to our safety. Outside of the city you may come in contact with moose, deer, beaver, snakes, fox or snapping turtles. They get your attention real quick. Toronto’s cooling centres have been busy this summer with the extreme heat. Some councillors have called for more centres and longer hours of operation. And the TTC has grabbed headlines with lack of air conditioning on some subway cars.
john lyon LYON AROUND The Ontario countryside is littered with cooling centres. They’re called lakes. Or rivers. Ontario is blessed with an overabundance of them and for those lucky enough you’ll find them to be your own personal cooling centre when you jump right in. Glued to devices In the city the kids (and adults) tend to be glued to their hand-held devices. Texting, Facebook Netflix, and the most recent phenomenon, Pokemon Go. Up north or camping we can be free from all that. Just last week I paid $10 to fall asleep at our local drive-in movie theatre. Now, it was an expensive sleep but getting outdoors for a movie on the big screen was a real throwback, and obviously the country air got to me. I was
told the movie was great. Try some card games or board games for good measure. Or my personal favourite, ghost stories around the campfire. Beats Facebook or Pokemon Go any old day! In the city there’s nothing but brown crunchy grass. Which I don’t mind. Any grass I don’t have to cut is good grass. In cottage country we don’t worry about grass so much as we do the fire danger rating. When camping or cottaging you must be aware of how the fire danger rating (low, moderate, high or super crispy) affects your ability to cook food over an open fire or simply enjoy a bonfire. In the city we have plenty of bottled water ready for consumption to beat the heat. Up north it’s water by the bucket next to the fire for safety. John Lyon is a longtime Scarborough resident. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out.

The festival provides an environment for residents of Scarborough’s diverse communities to come together and celebrate the talents of young emerging artists. StArt is an initiative led by youth from SuiteLife Arts for Youth, a program committed to helping young artists in Scarborough develop their talents. The founders are a team of young artists with diverse backgrounds and talents. SuiteLife Arts for Youth
aims to help youth develop skills they would otherwise overlook. Given what the program perceives as education gaps, it’s objective is to provide Scarborough youth opportunities to develop their skills in a creative setting. On top of creating their own work, artists are given instruction in many different artforms during the festival. Festival-week events include a number of arts, dance and theatre workshops, and the action is centred around the Scarborough Village Recreation Centre and theatre at Markham and
Kingston roads. Local youngsters are encouraged to get involved by joining the workshops. For more info on the workshops and the schedule, visit to www.startypa.org. A new twist on this year’s festival will be the Breaking Bread showcase Friday, Aug. 12 at the Scarborough Village Theatre. Breaking Bread begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m., at the Scarborough Village Recreation Centre, followed by performances from some of Scarborough’s emerging artists at the adjoining theatre from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology is totally invisible when worn. It offers retirees the opportunity to defy hearing loss by compensating for your individual hearing loss in all situations, day and night. Nobody can see it because it fits snugly and comfortably in your ear canal and uses the ear’s natural acoustics for natural sound quality. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about so there’s no need to keep fiddling and adjusting settings. You can start enjoying life again as you concentrate on hearing, rather than thinking about your hearing aid.
These latest digital hearing aids continuously analyze incoming sounds and adapt to each individual situation, so you always get the best hearing possible. Even in background noise. When speech and conversation sounds are detected, the sound is automatically increased at different frequencies so you can hear and understand it clearly, not just loudly. You get all the benefits you want in a digital hearing aid without the obvious sign that you are wearing one because it’s completely invisible in most ears. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!
