Infants test negative for TB after exposure at Scarborough hospital

The Scarborough Hospital says all tests for tuberculosis so far have been negative on infants thought to have been exposed to the disease in its neonatal intensive care unit. The hospital announced last week 87 babies would be tested at special clinics because they had contact from April 1 to July 18 with a nurse who tested positive for TB. Skin tests and chest x-rays, however, gave no positive results when 77 of the babies were tested, the hospital reported this week. Eight more of the infants are scheduled for tests. The hospital, however, has so far not been able to inform families of the two remaining babies of the need for tests. “We are confident we will be able to reach those two in the coming days,” Cindy Woods, a spokesperson, said Friday, Aug. 10.

Scarborough paralympians in London Two local athletes are competing in wheelchair basketball tournament before London DANIELLE MILLEY dmilley@insidetoronto.com The Olympics might be over, but the action isn’t with the London 2012 Paralympic Games set to begin Aug. 29. Two Scarborough residents have already left for a pre-Games wheelchair basketball tournament in Holland and they’ll be en route to London shortly. Abdi Dini and Adam Lancia (who just recently moved to Nova Scotia from Scarborough) spoke to The Mirror Monday before leaving the country Tuesday. London will be Lancia’s third Olympics; he previously was part of the gold medal winning team in Athens and silver in Beijing. “For me, it’s kind of old hat. I still get goosebumps when I think about the opening though,” he said. Lancia, 32, joined the senior men’s national team in May 2001 and has enjoyed success with it. He said the Paralympic Games are special and it’s hard to describe what it’s like to play on such a scale with thousands of spectators and hundreds of thousands more watching at home. This is Dini’s second Paralympic Games; he was part of the team in Beijing. “I’m excited. I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of preparation since last summer. Our goal, like any other team, is to make it to the gold medal game.” The team won a bronze at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Mexico. “We all feel a certain amount of pressure to perform,” Lancia said.

The team spent three weeks in St. Catharines preparing for the Games. With the Olympics now over, it adds to the excitement for the Paralympians because they know their turn is next. “It makes you realize it’s just a couple weeks away,” Dini said. Lancia wasn’t able to watch much of the coverage, but what he did see

got him excited. “That just intensifies everything, even just seeing highlights at the end of the day,” he said. While this may not be his first Paralympics, it might just be the first one where his family will be there to watch. His mother and sister are making a last-ditch effort to raise enough money to go to London to watch him play.

“It would be indescribable. I know a lot of people who’ve had their family there and it gives them such a deep feeling,” Lancia said. “If they were able to come, that would mean the world to me.” Dini’s family won’t be making the

trip from Canada, but he said he is excited to have an aunt and cousins in London who are slated to come out and watch him compete. n The Paralympic Games run Aug. 29 to Sept. 9.

Man shot in stomach outside Lawrence East RT station Friday Charges against two men have been upgraded to first-degree murder in the July 22 stabbing death of a 22-year-old man. Police found Nirosan Thillainathan dead with apparent chest injuries after they were called to an assault in progress near McCowan Road and Hwy. 401. An autopsy determined Thillainathan died of stab

wounds. Hussain Saeed and Zishan Malik, both 20, were charged with seconddegree murder last month. On Aug. 8, the charges were upgraded to first-degree murder. Saeed and Malik are scheduled to make a court appearance on the morning of Aug. 27. Anyone with information on the murder, the city’s 31st of 2012, is asked to call the homicide squad

A 19-year-old man is recovering after being shot in the stomach outside the Lawrence East Scarborough RT station Friday. Police were called to the station, at 2444 Lawrence Ave. E. near Kennedy Road, at 1:08 p.m. The victim was shot within a

fenced area near the GO tracks that are beside the RT tracks. He was taken to Sunnybrook hospital via an emergency run. His condition was upgraded to non-life-threatening in hospital. Jobs, support needed more than extra police

Easy steps for better waste diversion H

ow well do you recycle? Do you ensure everything that should go into your green bin makes it in there? The merits of public and private garbage collection systems in Toronto will continue to be debated. It’s a debate that was renewed last week when the residential portion of the city from Yonge Street to the Humber River our view officially switched to a private system of collection. Do your part This now means about half of the city – west of Yonge – has and sort your privatized collection (Etobicoke trash properly has had its residential waste collected privately since before amalgamation). The remainder of the city continues to have its residential waste collected by city employees. But let’s think beyond the method of collection. Let’s think about what we, as residents, are doing. Residents must use this time as an opportunity to embrace better habits when they put out their waste for collection. Are we doing all we can? Doing all we can means ensuring residential waste is properly diverted into garbage, recycling and green bins. This may mean taking a bit of sorting time beforehand. Refer to your waste collection calendar or use the Waste Wizard online tool to get more information if you’re unsure about what goes where. According to figures from the City of Toronto, our recycling has a 20 per cent contamination rate (referring to items that can’t be recycled). Reducing that number is a meaningful and achievable goal. Ultimately, waste that’s properly sorted before collection means more efficient collection. That’s ultimately better for the taxpayer. That’s the benefit. As for the public versus private collection debate, let it continue. Will cost-saving success experienced by this program merit expansion? Will the dire warnings of worsening service be correct? Maybe further adjustments to Toronto’s garbage collection system won’t even be deemed necessary. Regardless of that outcome, there are manageable tasks we as residents can do now. The first week wasn’t perfect for the new service provider, as reports of delays surfaced. A core component of elected representation is ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services. Constituents can do their part by ensuring as little of Toronto’s waste as possible goes to landfill. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Conservative cuts harming people in our community To the editor: Re: ‘Refugee cuts take toll on local hospitals: doctor,’ News, Aug. 2. The Scarborough Mirror has performed an important journalistic function by publishing the story about Dr. Paul Caulford and his compassion for newcomers to Canada. It is true that there are people in our community who will be hurt, and pos-

sibly harmed, as a result of Bill C-31, passed by the Conservatives in Ottawa. Your story exposes how our neighbours here in Scarborough are being demeaned as a result of this new legislation. Once upon a time Canada welcomed people from all over the world. People came here to have a better life. In fact, there is a poster in the Pier 21

Museum in Halifax that says that a Canadian is an immigrant with seniority. I think that, through their actions, the Conservatives are demonstrating that they are people with simple, small hearts. To the editor: Re: ‘TAVIS makes true connection with community,’ Editorial July 27. There was a major problems with your editorial on TAVIS and increased policing in Toronto: your assumption that more police presence in our neighbourhoods and communities equals safer communities. Police get maybe 20 times more money than social or recreational programs, but we haven’t seen a comparable increase in the feeling of safety. Why is it that young people in general, and black people in large numbers, feel less safe when groups of police wander their streets and patrol their backyards? Could it be that, for black youth, being stopped and “carded” four times as often, being physically or mentally harassed when doing nothing wrong and being “known to police” in much higher numbers might make people more intimidated and fearful of police? Studies have been done all over North America showing that wherever you have more intensive policing (for example Jane-Finch and Rexdale in Toronto; Newark and Philadelphia in the U.S.), you have more criminal charges and arrests, even though many infractions are minor. If the white community was “over-protected” that way, we would see more whites before the courts for criminal behaviour. Jobs, services, supports and more opportunities to participate in society would go a lot further in making our communities safe. Richard De Gaetano

Three year old tied up during home invasion Child threatened with death ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A toddler was tied up during an armed home invasion in Malvern Sunday. Police said two men, one armed with a gun, broke into a home near Sheppard Avenue and Neilson Road around 3:25 p.m. The men tied up three people, including a three year old, and threatened to kill the child if money wasn’t turned over to them. They fled with jewelry and cash. The suspects are white and 25 to 35 years old. One is about 6’2” tall with short black hair and a slim build and wore a black baseball hat and a light grey tracksuit. The other is 5’3” to 5’5” tall and wore a black ski mask. Anyone with information is asked to call the holdup squad at 416-808-7350 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

n Sexual assault alert

Police have issued a sexual assault alert after a woman was attacked while walking in the Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue area early Monday. Police said a man approached the woman from behind and put her in a headlock, causing her to fall to the ground, around 12:40 p.m. “The man attempted to choke the woman with an article of clothing and assaulted her during the struggle,” police said in a news release. “The woman was able to escape the man’s grip and escaped.” The suspect is white, 50 to 55 years old, 5’10” tall, 190 pounds with a moustache. He wore glasses, a white baseball hat and a blue jean jacket over a white shirt. For the first time in nearly two decades visitors to the Canadian National Exhibition will once again be able to travel from point A to point B through the sky. The Sky Ride is a new 1,600 foot long suspended ride that takes people from the Direct Energy Centre to the Better Living Centre, giving them an aerial view of the rides, games, BMO Field, and even Lake Ontario. David Bednar, general manager, said all annual events such as the CNE exist both in people’s memories, as well as in the present and one of the things people always ask is why the Alpine Way was removed. “It would be impossible to install a ride of that size and scope today, but we wanted something that would do a similar function so we’ve been talking with our partners for years,” he said. The result is the Sky Ride, which is an easy eight-minute glide across the CNE grounds from 42 feet up. “We’re so full of action here it is kind of nice to get above it all,” Bednar said. “It’s very gentle.” There’s also a bit of a breeze up there so Sky Ride can give people the chance to catch their breath and cool off a bit between the many games, rides and attractions

We have some acrobats that have been working with Cirque du Soleil and we have some street performers,” said Bednar at a media preview Wednesday morning, Aug. 15. He advised people to line up early, citing full houses for every show when he performed at the CNE in 2009. Illusionist Ted Outerbridge is bringing his brand of magic to the CNE for the first time. He will have daily shows on the Variety Stage at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. FLOWRIDER is returning with flow boarders who will demonstrate tricks, or you can ride for

an additional cost; and, of course, the always popular Canadian International Air Show returns for its 63rd year at the CNE, soaring over Lake Ontario on Labour Day weekend. In addition to crowdpleasing Canadian Forces Snowbirds and seven Canadian Harvards, there will be a new addition to the air show this time around. “The show stopper this year will be a husband and wife act. He jumps from the plane as a winged batman while she flies around him,” said Colleen Swider, manager of public affairs and media relations with the Canadian International Air Show. This will be Melissa and Rex Pemberton’s first time performing in Canada. Their performance will also feature Rex’s recovery from the lake by the naval members of H.M.C.S York. Food is always a big part of the CNE and for those looking for artery clogging indulgences there will be plenty. “What would a CNE be without fun new things such as deep fried fudge and everything to do with bacon,” Bednar said. “We cannot not have deep fried butter now that we’ve started the tradition.” There will also be a food truck rally on Aug. 24-26 featuring more than 15 food trucks. zoom-zoom A few short decades ago, most families got by with sedans and station wagons. Until recently, most of these vehicles were trucky and bland. Automakers today are more creative, particularly with crossovers, which often blur the lines between SUV, minivan and wagon. And the Mazda CX-9 – my tester for the week – is among the most stylish of these. The CX-9 is most striking from the side, where its high and rising beltline is topped by a band of windows that narrows towards the rear. Wide shoulders and a tapered greenhouse, accented by a roof-mounted spoiler give it a more athletic look than you’d expect from a family hauler. Ditto for the large wheel openings over big 20-inch ■ AT A GLANCE: BODY STYLE: seven-seat crossover. alloys, and the trapezoidal dual exhausts. From the front, this crossover’s projector headlamps sweep back like cat’s eyes, either side of the chrome-surround upper grille. But don’t let the CX-9’s low, swoopy profile fool you, as there’s still plenty of space for both passengers and cargo. Behind the third row – yes, this is a seven-passenger vehicle – you’ll find 475 litres of space. That’s more than in many full-size sedans, and there’s even a handy underfloor tray. Drop the third row, and you’re left with 1,368 litres. This is the configuration I used all week – much of it with two kids bickering in the middle row, and the cargo hold jammed floor-to-ceiling with camping gear. Drop both the second and third rows, and you have 2,851 litres. Cargo volume is important, but convenience and the accessibility are as critical. All seatsfoldflatintheCX-9quicklyandeasily.Putting everything back in place is a minor effort as well. Getting into the third row is aided by the CX-9’s tilt-and-slide mechanism, which is a one-handed operation that moves the 60/40 second row forward nearly nine inches. Passengers in the second row get their own HVAC controls, and are treated to loads of knee and head room. Seating is comfortable, and in the GT is embellished with contrasting leather inserts. The CX-9 is among the pricier offerings in this segment (with a starting MSRP of $36,395), and as such I’d expect a healthy list of standard content. Here, Mazda does not disappoint.

The base front-drive GS gets threezone climate control, heated front seats (eight-way power adjust for driver), sixspeaker AM/FM/CD audio system, Bluetooth, tilt/telescopic steering with audio and cruise controls, power heated mirrors, and more. You can add $2,000 for active torque split all-wheel drive and $2,395 for a luxury package that includes power moonroof, leather upholstery, four-way power adjust for the front passenger and power lumbar

support for the driver. The CX-9’s steering, with rpm-sensing variable power assist, has more road feel than typical in this kind of vehicle. And the engine – a DOHC 24-valve 3.7-litre V6 (273 hp, 270 lb/ft of torque), mated to a six-speed automatic – packs enough punch to launch it smoothly and quickly, and deliver ample passing power on the highway. Transport Canada rates this powertrain at a reasonable 12.7/8.4 litres/100 km (city/

hwy) as a front driver and 12.8/9.0 litres/100 km (city/hwy) with AWD. I wouldn’t expect to see these numbers, unless you’re extremely light on the pedal. My own result was a thirstier 13 litres/100 km combined. Fuel economy aside, the CX-9 is both practical and fun to drive – and handles more like a mid-size sedan than a large crossover. It delivers the kind of nimbleness and ‘zoom zoom’ that Mazda is known for. – Neil Moore Metroland Media

General Motors developing wi-fi pedestrian detection technology General Motors researchers are developing a promising driver assistance feature potentially capable of detecting pedestrians and bicyclists on congested streets or in poor visibility conditions before the driver notices them. The feature relies on Wi-Fi Direct, the peer-topeer wireless standard that allows devices like some smartphones to communicate directly with each other rather than through a shared access point like a cell phone tower. GM researchers have determined Wi-Fi Direct can be integrated with other sensor-based object detection and driver alert systems already available on production vehicles to help detect pedestrians and bicyclists carrying smartphones equipped with Wi-Fi Direct. The automaker also is looking to develop a complementary app for Wi-Fi Direct-capable

smartphones that can be downloaded by frequent road users such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;bike messengerâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;construction workerâ&#x20AC;? that will help Wi-Fi Directequipped vehicles identify them. Wireless pedestrian detection is part of GMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ongoing development of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication systems that could provide advance warning about hazards such as slowed or stalled vehicles, slippery roads or intersections and stop signs. By eliminating the intermediate step required to reach a cell phone tower, Wi-Fi Direct allows devices to connect in approximately one second compared to conventional wireless systems that typically need seven or eight seconds to acquire location information and connect. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Metroland Media

LEXUS REVEALS THE NEW LS Lexus has revealed its new LS model range, comprising the LS 460, LS 600h and, for the first time in its history, an F Sport version of its flagship model. The most obvious changes are to the exterior styling, where the new LS adopts the distinctive Lexus spindle front grille design, but the development of the model goes much deeper to include improved driving dynamics, better sound insulation and more sophisticated and effective preventive safety systems. In all more than 3,000 changes have been made to the current LS, including three world-firsts and 15 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lexus-firstâ&#x20AC;? features and technologies. The LSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exterior has undergone a comprehensive redesign. In a first for Lexus, all lights - headlights, rear lamps and fog lights - are available with LED technology. The new LS gains another Lexus first in the form of its Drive Mode Select, offering five switchable driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport S and Sport S+. Three design awards for Kia Kia has won three design awards in the Automotive Brand Contest 2012,the latest of a series of honours for the Korean brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s design team headed by Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer. The new Kia ceeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d â&#x20AC;&#x201C; launched in June 2012 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; triumphed in the exterior category and also received an honorary special mention for exceptional innovation in the interior category. In addition, the high profile jury selected the Kia GT as the winner of the concept award. The rear-wheel drive sports sedan design study celebrated its world pre-

miere in September 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Automotive Brand Contest, which was held for the first time in 2011, has become an internationally recognized competition. It is open to car manufacturers, automotive parts suppliers and companies delivering design and brand communications services to the automotive industry. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two Kia award winners are key models for the brand. The second generation of the ceeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d, Kiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best-selling model in Europe, features styling typi-

Create a clean and healthy environment inside the car Over the last several years, homeowners have increasingly emphasized clean air in their homes. The growing popularity of home air purifiers suggests today's homeowners want to make certain the environment inside their home is as healthy as possible. Toronto athletes compete in Summer Games Toronto athletes are competing in their own backyards at the Ontario Summer Games Aug. 16 to 19. The opening ceremony of the biannual Olympic-style competition, which features 28 sports at venues across Toronto and surrounding regions, is at 7 p.m. today at Varsity Stadium. About 2,500 athletes from across the province will be competing in sports from rugby and sailing to

fencing and softball. Eighteen sports are being held at 19 venues across Toronto. Canoe/kayak is being held in Welland, cycling will take place in Albion Hills, skeet shooting is being held in Oshawa, sporting rifle will take place in St. Catharines and the triathlon is in Brampton. The Games are seen as a gateway to further national and international competition, acting as qualifiers for

most of the sports featured during the event, said Crystal Peiris, a games consultant with Sport Alliance of Ontario, the organization in charge of running the Summer Games for the provincial government. “The Ontario Games are a stepping stone for athletes to competitions like the nationals and the Canada Games, for example,” Peiris said. Playlist project lists favourites by transit subway station stops Tracking transit grooves puts tunes on the map RAHUL GUPTA @TOinTransit It’s been tough, but music mapmaker Meagan Perry has managed not to judge TTC subway riders by the contents of their iPods. Perry is the creator of The Stationary Groove Toronto Subway Playlist Project, an online interactive subway map which allows users to view and download playlists of the most popular songs, station by TTC station, based on Perry’s canvassing of transit commuters. For 120 hours, the equivalent of three full work weeks, the Leslieville resident traveled to every subway station on the Bloor-Danforth and Yonge-University-Spadina lines spending up to two hours approaching headphone-wearing commuters and asking them what they were listening to. Perry said she resisted the urge to critique the choices of songs – particularly those belonging to a cer tain Canadian band. “I couldn’t bring myself to knock someone’s music, not even Nickelback,” said Perry as she recalled her experience. Since she launched StationaryGroove.com in early July, Perry received 250 song suggestions and has already updated the playlist for one subway station, Finch, with plans for more. To her surprise, the vast majority of people Perry approached were forthcoming about their choices – though somewhat mystified by her interest. She even drew the interest of TTC employees. “The drivers on the trains going back and forth were curious about what I was doing. When I told them, they’d just laugh,” she said. Titans advance; OFF TO THE ONTARIO CUP SEMIS Thunder fall The Scarborough-based Toronto Thunder will not defend their Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) title in the varsity division. Playing at home at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough last Saturday, the Thunder, 7-1 in the regular season, were shut out 26-0 by the visiting Myers Riders (6-3). Myers will go on to play the OVFL championship final this Saturday in Oshawa against the London Mustangs.
