The 33rd annual Terry Fox Run to raise funds for cancer research takes place in communities across Canada this Sunday, and Scarborough will play host to two runs.

The Scarborough Terry Fox Run takes place in Cedarbrook Park and the West Hill Terry Fox Run takes place in Colonel Danforth Park. Cedarbrook Park is at 91 East Park Blvd., near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue. The run goes between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The West Hill Terry Fox Run goes from 8 a.m. to noon, and starts on Old Kingston Road in the Highland Creek Valley and travels through Colonel Danforth Park.

Also, Fred Fox, the older brother of Terry Fox, will attend a special event planned for the Scarborough Civic Centre this Saturday.

The meet-and greet starts at 10 a.m. at the site of the Terry Fox display in the civic centre.

Telephone town halls on merger of hospitals Residents can also give opinions on possible merger of TSH and Rouge Valley in online survey MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Carefully crafted over the summer, the chances for residents to question the possible merger of Scarborough’s hospitals consist of private community roundtables and two telephone “town halls.”

An online survey is another way people can send their thoughts about a joining of The Scarborough Hospital and Rouge Valley Health System.

However, they likely won’t know whether a merger is actually proposed until a report reaches hospital board meetings late next month or in early November.

Neither will they know what a merger would mean for specific health services in Scarborough, though TSH and RVHS have promised none of their hospital cam-

puses or emergency rooms will close and no medical program would be moved between Scarborough and Durham Region.

Interactive town halls The interactive town halls, which take place Sept. 24 at 7:10 p.m and Oct. 8 at 7:05 p.m., can handle thousands of callers and help the hospitals to hear from as many residents as possible, TSH and RVHS said in a release this week.

“The phone mechanism calls out to you – unlike a conference call where people call in. So you need to register to participate,” added Mary Ferguson, a spokesperson for the Central East Local Health Integration Network, which is supervising the $1.1-million merger study.

Some questions in the hour-long town halls require people to record

opinions by pushing a button, but Ferguson said about 45 minutes of each session will be dedicated to answering live questions.

“In addition, for anyone else who has a question that there isn’t time to answer during the call, that question is noted and someone will respond at a time after the call with an answer,” she said.

Feedback welcome Though the telephone calls are “the biggest, broadest way” to communicate the benefits or risks of a merger, meetings of 10 to 20 people are also planned, though David Brazeau of RVHS said the groups chosen are community and cultural organizations the hospitals have worked with already.

“If any community groups want to have a discussion and submit

their comments and feedback, they are welcome and encouraged to do that,” Ferguson added.

“Groups with questions can submit their feedback through the channels established for the stakeholder engagement process on the web. They will be responded to by hospital management.”

LHIN approval needed No opportunities are planned, though, to question the merger report before it is submitted for a vote at board meetings of both hospitals by an “Integration Leadership Committee” including the hospital CEOs, medical association representatives, board chairpersons and two Scarborough residents, Paul Rook and Israt Ahmed.

A merger, if recommended and approved by the hospitals, must also

be approved at a board meeting of the LHIN in late November, and by Ontario’s health ministry before it is official.

Changes in hospital funding, coupled with proposals for restructuring medical services at TSH (since dropped) prompted the LHIN in March to order an “integration” study.

In June, the hospital boards decided to study the possibility of a full merger.

Ontario Liberals must not take Toronto for granted

rovincial politicians are back to work at Queen’s Park this week, and for Toronto residents there will be something we haven’t had for 10 years – a Progressive Conservative MPP representing a Toronto riding.

Doug Holyday, who until the Aug. 1 byelection was Toronto’s deputy mayor and councillor for Etobicoke Centre’s Ward 3, is the first PC from Toronto in the legislature since Liberal Dalton McGuinty was first elected premier in 2003, replacing the Tory government of Ernie Eves.

Since then, Toronto’s representation has been decidedly Liberal, with a smattering of NDP MPs. Now we see a legislature with five NDP MPPs, one PC and 17 Liberals among our 23 ridings.

With Premier Kathleen Wynne representing Toronto riding our view of Don Valleythe West in the Liberal minority government as well, we Holyday will expect the needs of our city to be offer balance given the priority they deserve at Queen’s Park. at Queen’s Park A first step took place last week when Minister of Transportation Glen Murray announced funding for an extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line from Kennedy station to the Scarborough Town Centre. This was a big issue during August’s byelections, particularly in the riding of Scarborough-Guildwood (which stayed Liberal in a race won by Mitzie Hunter).

Regardless of whether one thinks replacing the aging Scarborough RT with a subway is the right or wrong decision, what it shows is the political balance shifting in the city to a point where Toronto’s support can no longer be taken for granted by the Liberals.

With his experience as Toronto’s deputy mayor, we’ll be looking at Holyday to bring his perspective to a number of issues including government spending as he has a well-deserved reputation of looking after taxpayers’ money.

Given the riding he represents is right on the border of the Mississauga gas power plant that was controversially cancelled by the Liberals, we also want to see Holyday holding the government to account on exactly how much was spent on that decision. Holyday is deeply respected and passionate not only about Etobicoke but all of Toronto. Having an experienced and level-headed PC with a strong understanding of the issues of the entire city bodes well for the upcoming session at Queen’s Park.

Man, 88, dies after being hit by truck

New cricket pitch opens

An elderly man is dead after being struck by a truck while crossing a street in a wheelchair.

Police said the 88-year-old was crossing Milner Avenue at Scunthorpe Road in an electric wheelchair when a westbound 2002 GMC truck driven by a 62-year-old man hit him around 6:05 p.m.

The victim was within the pedestrian crossover, crossing from the north side of the street, when the collision occurred. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

BioBlitz set for Rouge Park

T

here are thousands of species – from microscopic organisms to critters you might only see at night – that call Rouge Park home and residents are invited to find out what’s creeping and crawling around the area in a 24-hour time period.

The Ontario BioBlitz Rouge Park 2013 is taking place this weekend, starting at noon Saturday and continuing until noon on Sunday.

The goal is to document all life in the park while educating participants about the importance of biological diversity.

And this year’s goal is to count 2,500 to 3,000 species. That’s more than a thousand past last year’s recorded 1,485 species counted.

During the blitz, scientists and members of the public identify and record all animal, plant and fungal species they find in the park.

“You can drop by for an hour, you can stay for 10 hours, you can come by at 2 a.m. or you can drop by at 7 a.m.,” said David Ireland, Royal Ontario Museum, managing director for bio-

diversity and chair of steering group for the Ontario BioBlitz, who is excited about engaging the public about bio-diversity awareness and conservation.

Throughout the 24-hour BioBlitz there are workshops and hikes, which are being led by the 450 registrants along with some of the best experts in Canada.

“They will stop what they are doing for an hour and meet and take groups out into the field and show them what they are doing,” said Ireland.

“These citizen scientist that are coming out to work along side experts – who have day jobs – they do other things, they may take a hike once in a while. Very rarely do they get a chance to contribute to science.”

They will contribute to an inventory that will go into a database and provide Parks Canada with details to better understand the park and conserve it, he said.

A BioBlitz isn’t just for hard core hobby scientists or seasoned biologists it’s for everyone. And that’s the goal of the event, said Ireland.

Throughout the weekend there are many demonstrations slated.

The Monarch butterfly is one of the species that calls Rouge Park home.

Brad Hubley, from the Royal Ontario Museum, on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. is Moths, Mercury Vapour Light Trapping.

For years, entomologists have used mercury vapour bulbs to attract moths.

Residents are welcome to take part in this nighttime workshop to learn about the nocturnal relative of the butterfly and learn why they follow the light.

Over the two days there are 10 guided hikes; 10 workshops, a live animal display by the Toronto Zoo and a BioBus from the Universtiy of Guelph. The bus is a mobile DNA lab.

Ireland said last year, which was the pilot year, the Royal Ontario Museum partnered with the Toronto Zoo, Ontario Nature, Rouge Valley Conservation Centre, Bio, Ontario Nature, Canada Parks the Toronto & Region Conservation Authority and conducted it in the spring.

They now have a 10-year plan and this year the program returns as the first GTA Ontario BioBlitz.

Last year’s event in Rouge Park holds the record for the world’s largest BioBlitz, with 1,485 species counted, Ireland said.

The park is home to a huge track of habitat for wildlife that is unprecedented in urban centres, he said.

“And so what we are trying to do is help Parks Canada elevate the benefit of an urban society appreciating and serving such a contiguous piece of land.”

Because of last year’s blitz, scientists know there are more than 1,450 species that depend on Rouge Park to many degrees. And there

are 25 species that call the park home, including the milk snake, the blandings turtle and the monarch butterfly.

“There are big animals in there – deer, coyote and there are some really special animals, too, like the black purse-web spider, Ontario’s only relative of the tarantula – it’s never been found in Ontario and very rare to find in Toronto,” Ireland said.

“Of the 450 registrants, there are at least 50 youths who are 16 and under who are citizen scientists coming to work hand-inglove with experts.” he said.

“It will inspire them to go into biology and related fields and environmental studies it gives them some sense of purpose of their efforts that they will put in over the course of the 24 hours.”

Antonia Guidotti, entomology technician at the Royal Ontario Museum, will be at the BioBlitz as the collection leader for all insects.

“This year we are going to be doing it in September, which is quite a bit later for many animals because they are already starting to go

Service levels to Torontonians revealed Toronto council’s standing committees start meeting this week. And those meetings could be very significant as far as city service levels are concerned.

That’s because city manager Joe Pennachetti and his staff are reporting on the results of a city-wide service level review, to each of the city’s standing committees.

And that’s where it gets interesting, according to Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks.

“At those meetings I intend to move motions to improve the public service the city gets,” Perks said.

IMPROVING STAFFING IN DEPARTMENT wBUILDING

The first service review occurred at the city’s government management committee.

Next up will be the planning and growth management committee meeting on Thursday.

Staff has come up with recommendations to bolster the city’s green agenda, which includes making sure the city’s waste diversion rates exceed 70 per cent and helping residents reach the city’s environmental goals.

The committee will also be looking at ways to facilitate commercial zip line attractions in city parks, particularly Earl Bales Park in North York.

Scarborough United soccer women win Ontario Cup championship A Scarborough women’s soccer team is the best in Ontario after winning the Ontario Cup championship on Sunday at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.

Scarborough GS United twice fought back from early one-goal deficits to edge the

Richmond Hill Raiders 4-3.

The Scarborough team now advances to the national club championships in Halifax Oct. 9 to 14.

After Sonia Rocha put Scarborough on the board (to tie the game at 1-1), teammate Kristen Boujou took
