City hall has “a fourth wall” Toronto’s citizens can tear down, says Dave Meslin, a Toronto writer bringing an “interactive exhibit” on city politics to Scarborough next week. ‘The Fourth Wall – a term for the invisible barrier between the audience and actors on a stage – is what Meslin thinks keeps most residents from participating in the “insider’s game” of municipal life between elections. The exhibit, at Warden Woods Community Centre next Wednesday, contains a number of proposals, from teaching civics in local schools to no longer calling mayors “your worship,” designed to enhance local democracy and people’s access to it. It appears – for the first time in Scarborough, it seems – with the approval of Scarborough Southwest Councillor Michelle Berardinetti, who called the exhibit “fabulous” in a release this week and will participate, along with Meslin, in a presentation on the proposals from 6 to 7 p.m. The centre is on Firvalley Court south of St. Clair Avenue. “Many of your community members feel removed from the decisionmaking process,” the release quotes Rosamma George, Warden Woods’ community development manager as saying. “This is a wonderful opportunity for them to learn how they can have a stronger voice.” Among Meslin’s suggestions (detailed at thefourthwall.ca) is the Ranked Ballot Initiative, which proposes a run-off for municipal candidates who don’t receive a clear majority of votes.

Breaking The Cycle builds positive futures MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com He didn’t finish high school, he wasn’t planning on going back, and he just got out of juvenile detention. But there was something Nick, at 18, could do. He could enrol in Breaking The Cycle, and though over 28 weeks he thought of leaving the employment readiness and internship program, Nick, who didn’t want his last name published, said he kept coming back because he was learning so much. “As long as you want the help, it’ll help you,” said Nick, who worked through his placement at the University of Toronto bookstore and is starting a one-year course at Seneca College. Onika Shortt, 26, said she didn’t expect much from Breaking The Cycle, but liked it from the first day. “I felt I was somewhere where I wasn’t being judged. I could just be myself,” Shortt, who has started a college program too said last Thursday as a dozen graduates of the Scarborough-based group celebrated with a number of supporters, parents and children. “My goal is to own my own hotel,” she said. A dozen young “ambassadors” graduated last week at Burrows Hall Community Centre, all whom had been out of work and either involved in a gang or, as the BTC puts it, understand the “gang lifestyle.” One young man, Nixon Nirmalendran, started the program with them. On June 2, the 22-yearold was shot at the Eaton Centre food court and died of his wounds

nine days later. “It was a tough moment but we’re strong; we’re here for each other,” said Zohra Rahman, BTC’s case manager. After each graduate was cheered as they received their certificates and a lunch was served, Rahman said Nirmalendran had been keen to go to college and pursue his goals. Everyone was silent for a minute. “Keep him in your prayers and your spirits,” said Rahman. Before the short tribute, she said

BTC staff were going to deliver Nirmalendran’s BTC certificate to his parents that afternoon. “They were trying to come today but I guess it was too much.” Nick said the program helped him look at life from a different perspective. People want to be accepted into something. They want to feel love and belonging, and that’s why young people join gangs, he said. “But you can find love somewhere else — with a girl, with your family,” he said.

Nick grew up in Malvern, and he knows people are worried about the neighbourhood and whether some of its young men may be headed into a cycle of confrontation with young men from the Kingston-Galloway area. For things to get better, he said, more of those young people need jobs, other ways to keep them occupied during the day and more programs like BTC. People also need to contribute to their community, not just call

Rahman said the graduates, who were either hired to work or are furthering their education in high school or a college, can count on continuing day and night support from BTC. Jackie Foster considers her son Junior Foster to be stubborn, but she said she was thrilled to see him dressed up to graduate. “I see a huge change within him,” she said. “I want to cry for my son because he’s come a long way.” Ali Amim, another of last week’s graduates, said the six months flew by. He is now studying heating, ventilation and air conditioning and was hired through his internship as a DJ. “I have become way more positive. Now if there’s something I want to do I put all my heart (into it),” he said.

Jones, co-ordinator of the East Scarborough Community Garden Association, is a tenant of a Toronto Community Housing building in Scarborough.

Since 2009, the volunteer group has been engaging TCH tenants, many of whom had given up hope of providing fresh vegetables for themselves or their families, through small community garden projects. “We offer empowerment,” said Jones. But while the group has worked to maintain gardens at nine apartment buildings and a public school this year, Jones said he knows tenants of

Back to school, back to talking about transit N

ot only are students across Toronto back in school, but all the politicians who represent the city – municipally, provincially and federally – are packing their fancy new lunch boxes and pressing their clothes to get back to business. And there is one issue that should speak loudest for Torontonians: transit. And our view not just public transit, but cars, bicycles, and every other way we Toronto must get around the city. The very nature of public transit is one where individual neigh- commit to bourhoods and geographies can’t transit vision be individually satisfied, but necessitates working toward a common vision and plan. In these pages, we have called for a national transit strategy, not just ad hoc funding that bends with the wind. We have called for the provincial government to take back running the Toronto Transit Commission, alleviating the strain on municipal coffers. And to that end, we’ve called on everyone who sits on city council to stop arguing about a transit vision and commit to one so Toronto can be the world-class city it can be. All you have to do is travel the streets and highways of Toronto to see how busy they have become since school has started up. The summer, a respite for many, has come to an end and the crowds of students – from primary to university – are on the streets, and with them come many parents in their vehicles. Summer vacations are over so those Torontonians (and to greater extent Ontarians as a whole) are also back on the streets, highways and public transit slowing everything down. With these increased volumes, everyone across the city should keep up the pressure on all levels of government to treat the transit issue as more than just a one-off discussion. Getting from one end of the city to the other has become noticeably difficult, downright impossible some times, and that’s without adding the recent difficulties when the Gardiner Expressway is closed for the weekend, the Toronto International Film Festival bringing more people into the city core, and various festivals shutting down streets. It’s easy for politicians to lose track of the transit issue when dealing with their individual portfolios and concerns, but if we hope to one day have a solid transit solution for such a large and growing city, we must keep their political feet to the fire and make sure the topic never disappears from their radars. To the editor: Re: ‘Garage sales are no place for thieves,’ Letters, Aug. 30. The letter writer talked about theft from garage sales. I used to do sales at a church outdoor event. Theft occurred often so I had two volunteers to watch people to curtail this. Garage sales benefit the person who sells and the person who buys. One person’s junk is another person’s treasure. A lot of these items used to go to landfills. Garage sales help the environment. Some people can’t afford to pay retail prices for furniture, small appliances, toys and so on, but can afford garage sale prices. That is one of the reasons garage sales are so popular. Some people are lucky enough to find valuable antiques. I do my sales to benefit the DCAT chorus, a non-profit group that sings to veterans and seniors in nursing homes. Bill C-31 did not go far enough, reader says To the editor: Re: ‘Immigration forum slated for civic centre’, News, Sept. 14. Why does the Scarborough Civic Action Network feel they need to take a lead position in regards to their explanation of and interpretation of the changes to Canada’s immigration polices? Do we not have a Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism that operates at a huge cost to the taxpayer to distribute and explain these changes to all Canadians and immigrants? Do we not have duly elected MPs, again at a tax-

payer expense, to ensure their constituents clearly understand the effects of these changes? And why the need to debate Bill C-31? It passed into law in June and the time for discussion and debate are far gone. Individuals such as Shalini Konanur of the South Asian Legal Clinic say that “immigration fraud”, the main reason that Bill C-31 was written, is not perceived as a huge concern by people such as herself. I guess then that the federal government of Canada is again passing pointless, unnecessary legislation that address issues that do

not exist. As for the legion of experts being available for consultation, it certainly appears that they all have a vested interest in immigration laws remaining as lax as they have been. In my opinion, as a Canadian and an immigrant, Bill C-31 did not go far enough in closing the loopholes in the law and applying new regulations, both for Canadian immigration and also to “what constitutes a legitimate refugee claim”. Personally, I would set a one-year moratorium on immigration of any sort into this country, completely re-write all of

our immigrations laws to close all of the loopholes and ensure fraud is eliminated, and then open up our country under the new regulations. Those changes would include an immediate application of “the notwithstanding clause” in the Constitution to set aside the Supreme Court’s Singh decision on refugee claimant rights; an immediate ban of acceptance of refugees from agreed upon “safe countries”; and a “quick review process” for refugees arriving through another country or multiple countries. We should honour every fallen City of Toronto employee To the editor: I think it’s great the way Toronto honours our fallen police and fire department staff, but I find we do not

come close when it is a TTC, roads crew, waste or similar department staff that dies in the line of duty. I know these other

occupations are not as high profile, but at times can be equally hazardous. So let’s honour every fallen civic employee. Their

Suspects sought in sex assaults Police want to alert the public to two Scarborough sex assaults. Police said a man hit a woman from behind and sexually assaulted her while she was walking her dogs in a park near Steeles Avenue and Reesor Road around 6 p.m. last Thursday. The suspect fled the scene. Police didn’t release a description of him. At about 9 p.m. Sept. 12, two men came up to a 15-year-old girl as she was waiting for a bus on Sheppard Avenue at McCowan Road. Police said one man held the victim’s arms while the other sexually assaulted her. The teen managed to break free and ran south on McCowan. One suspect is black, about 40 years old, six-feet tall, 150 to 180 pounds with short black hair and a slim build. He wore a black jacket, a grey T-shirt and blue jeans. The other is black, 20, 5’10” to six-feet tall, 140 to 180 pounds with black hair in an afro. He wore a black hoodie sweater and black jeans. Stingers finish fourth at Ontario championships The Scarborough Stingers minor peewee AAA baseball team played in the Cooperstown Classic Baseball Tournament in New York state recently, and made it to the fifth round of playoffs finishing in the top 24 teams. Cooperstown is the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Stingers were seeded 46th out of 104 teams when they played against 55th seed Nutley Rangers from New Jersey. The Stingers 11-10. For their ninth game in four days, the Stingers moved on to play Central Jersey Stampede, also from New Jersey, who were the 14th seed. They lost 9-4. “We’re not the best team,” said head coach/ manager Dave Parker. “But we’re a team who plays really well together. The boys know each other really well.” Parker said it was easy to mistake some American peewee players for coaches. “They have some really big players down there.” Stingers player Adam Parker beat out more than 100 other players to win the Golden Arm Award during the skills competition. He scored eight points in the throwing event and was the first Canadian to win the event in more than 15 years. The Stingers finished fourth at the provincial championships held in Mississauga over the Labour Day weekend.

Birchmount Collegiate grads help Canadian baseball teams Birchmount Park Collegiate is doing its share to help stock Canada’s national baseball teams this summer. The Scarborough high school has contributed one player each to the men’s national team, which is slated to play today through Monday in a qualifying tournament for the 2013 World Baseball Classic, and also one player – one of three from Toronto – to the junior men’s national team which, impressively, settled for a silver medal at the at the 18U World Championships held Aug. 30 to Sept. 8 in Seoul. The two players are Tim Smith and Mitchell Triolo. Back in 2004, Smith, 26, helped the Birchmount Park Collegiate baseball team cap off an undefeated season with a provincial ‘Prentice Cup’ championship. He is currently an outfielder for the Mississippi Braves, a doubleA team for Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves. Through 55 games (and 165 at-bats), he was fifth on his team in batting average (.279). He’s the only player from Toronto on the Canadian team which is managed by former Blue Jay Ernie Whitt with retired Canadian legend Larry Walker serving as hitting coach. Community housing report stands chance of success

ith all the gridiron drama unfolding in Mayor Rob Ford’s life, it’s often easy to forget that the City of Toronto has a life beyond the mayor’s, and often beyond the mayor’s reach. On Monday, Davenport Councillor Ana Bailao provided evidence of that when she unveiled the long-awaited report into dealing with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s daunting backlog of repairs and maintenance. The report, titled Putting People First, is something of a repudiation of one of Mayor Ford’s early triumphs this term, when he led the wholesale gutting of the TCHC board of directors and put ally and former councillor Case Ootes in place as a oneperson board. As a councillor under former mayors Mel Lastman and David Miller, Ootes had been a sharp critic of the TCHC’s stock of more than 600 singlefamily homes. His view had been if Toronto Community Housing’s apartments and townhouses were crumbling, the city shouldn’t be putting up tenants in large, comfortable pieces of real estate. With Mayor Ford’s sup-

port, Ootes made the case once more as the singular board of the TCHC, and before he handed over control to the newly-appointed board, set the wheels in motion for a sell-off of that housing — in the course of it, potentially displacing subsidized tenants. balked When it came to council earlier this year, councillors balked — and in a compromise set up the task force and put Bailao in charge of finding other ways to raise the $751 million needed to erase the backlog. The new plan is much more modest. It would sell off at least 55 houses, and no more than 155 homes (with up to 100 going to tenants themselves) and look elsewhere for the money for the repair. Those tenants that would be displaced in the much more modest sell-off would be relocated to other city-owned homes in their home neighbourhood,

minimizing displacement. The housing company would otherwise look to remortgaging, bond-funding and simple efficiencies to dig into the repair backlog. Really, inasmuch as it might fit with his world view, all of this is tangential to the mayor’s agenda. In making the appointment of Ootes to run the housing company, Ford really gave an old ally an opportunity to eradicate one of his pet peeves while on council. The solution that came forward — essentially a one-time influx of an insufficient amount of cash, coupled with the removal of stock that might be seen as a little too fancy for the sorts of people who end up in affordable housing — was something council as a whole couldn’t stomach. Bailao’s report, focussing as it does on the well-being of even those tenants lucky enough to live in The Beach, stands a better chance. And so it is that the city trundles on, absent either the person or the politics of its self-immolating mayor. n David Nickle is the Mirror’s City Hall columnist. SIU clears police officer of wrongdoing in crash ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com The Special Investigations Unit has cleared a 41 Division police officer in a high-speed crash that left him and another motorist with serious injuries. The accident happened on Midland Avenue near Dorcot Avenue, north of Lawrence Avenue, at 12:39 p.m. on Aug. 23. The SIU said two police cruisers responding to an officer-assist call were heading south on Midland with their emergency equipment on. A northbound car turned into the southbound passing lane, crossing the centre line after the first cruiser passed, and collided with the second cruiser, the SIU said. The cruiser was travelling at 90 km/h; the northbound vehicle was travelling between 41 and 63 km/h. A 57-year-old Scarborough woman and the police officer were taken to Sunnybrook hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The officer, whose name hasn’t been released, received pelvic and internal injuries and remains in hospital. The woman suffered multiple bone fractures. The SIU assigned two forensic investigators and a collision recon-

struction expert to the case. The agency interviewed one witness officer and seven civilian witnesses and analyzed imagery from the subject officer’s in-car video camera. “Given that the complainant crossed the centre line of Midland Avenue in front of the subject officer’s police cruiser combined with the fact that the subject officer was

exempt from the speed limits requirements, he cannot in my view be held criminally liable for this motor vehicle collision,” SIU director Ian Scott said in a news release. In the area of the crash, Midland has four lanes and a posted speed limit of 60 km/h. The SIU investigates whenever there is a serious injury or death involving police.

Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande, however, called the three-year application “a Trojan horse” that would give Diversity “a foot in the door” if it later sought permanent zoning approval at the Ontario Municipal Board. In a report, city planning staff noted Diversity’s application was the fourth seeking to convert a single residential building along the south side of Sheppard between Victoria Park and Pharmacy Avenue. The OMB in 2005 refused to allow a flower and gift shop to operate in a single-family home at 3717 Sheppard Ave. E., but the board did approve permanent zoning for a dental office

in a house at 3717 Sheppard Ave. E. that had received temporary zoning. Toronto Council also granted permanent zoning in 2006 to what had been temporary offices in a house at 2969 Sheppard Ave. E. and council granted a temporary term in 2011 for a physiotherapy clinic at 2967 Sheppard Ave. E. approval Staff had recommended approval for Diversity’s application, calling it “appropriate” and noting Sheppard Avenue is “an intensification corridor.” Before a vote was taken, councillors asked Dickie about Slater’s submitted photos of the lawn and shrubbery of the Abbotsfield house, which is rented to a tenant family, arguing their “unkempt” state reflected Diversity’s commitment to future property maintenance. Letting the property become overgrown while it was rented is “disrespectful behaviour,” Scarborough Centre Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker said. Dickie said the property has been cleaned up.

Public input sought on The Scarborough Hospital’s future plans The Scarborough Hospital has hired a consulting firm to plan its future, and says it will soon be asking community members to help. “Healthcare transformation affects everyone, and we will be ensuring that all of our stakeholders have the opportunity to participate in this process,” TSH CEO Dr. John Wright said in a release. Wright has recently said some hospital services in the area may be consolidated or moved elsewhere

under new provincial policies. The Hay Group was hired for “a refresh” of the hospital’s Strategic Plan and over the coming months will work with residents and others in Scarborough to build “an evidencebased roadmap for redefining the scope and size of hospital services over the next few years.” No schedule for meetings or other forms of consultation was announced Friday, but residents were invited to watch for “ongoing

information” during the strategic planning process on the hospital’s website, www.tsh.to

City should retain most of its single-family homes, report recommends Report of Special Housing Working Group recommends sale of only 55 homes More than 90 per cent of Toronto Community Housing’s stock of single family homes won’t go on the auction block if Toronto Council approves the recommendations from a report presented by city councillor Ana Bailao Monday, Sept. 17. Instead, the city would sell just 55 of its stock of 619 free-standing homes as part of a strategy to deal with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s $751 million backlog in housing repairs. The city would also look at refinancing models in partnership with the federal and provincial governments, cut administrative costs and convert some of the homes to affordable ownership, selling them to the families who live there now. “The report, ‘Putting People First’, proposed new and innovative methods for Toronto Community Housing to raise revenue while retaining 90 per cent of its single family homes,” said Bailao. “It recommends that 564 of 619 single family homes be retained as affordable housing, while selling the remaining 55 which are worth more than $600,000 or are vacant and in need of repair.” Up to 100 of the remaining homes could also be sold to tenants who are able to participate in an assisted home-ownership program. The shift will affect 39 families, and until those families are notified, TCHC wouldn’t release the addresses of the homes to be sold. But the report recommends that anyone displaced by a home sale be moved into another single family home in the same neighbourhood as it becomes vacant. The move is a major step back from plans put forward by Mayor

Toronto heading to year-end budget surplus of nearly $115 million DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s 2012 budget surplus just keeps on growing. According to the variance report released Monday that will go before the Sept. 24 meeting of the budget committee, the city’s budget surplus sits at $187 million — more than double the $90 million projected at the last quarter. Staff don’t believe it will be quite that high by year-end. Toronto’s CFO Cam Weldon predicted it will be $115 million by the end of 2012. The bulk of the surplus this year comes from savings achieved by not filling 1,800 positions that were approved in the 2012 operating budget. The report from staff indicates most of those positions were simply not filled due to

timing issues. But Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks said that it amounts to an informal hiring freeze. “The civil service I believe with the assistance of the mayor (Rob Ford) is cutting service without council’s permission,” he said. ‘hiring slowdown’ “This is an informal hiring slowdown. We’re about to be pushed into approving the 2013 budget without current information and I’m worried we’re going to be pushed again into another chicken little budget.” Perks and others were critical of last year’s budget process, during which the city’s true financial health remained a mystery through the entire process.

The budget process began with a massive deficit that the city had to fill, and by the time council voted on the budget in January, the surplus sat at $154 million. But when the final figures came in for 2011 in June of this year, councillors learned they were dealing with a $292 million surplus. Mayor Rob Ford’s team argued that any surplus should go in to paying down the city’s debt, but even with the smaller surplus lost the day at council and found many of the cuts they supported reversed. This year’s budget process will be starting in the fall and concluding in early January, the same as last year’s. Doug Ford, vice-chair of the city’s budget committee, would not comment to reporters on the surplus.

The all-new 2013 Santa Fe has improved in nearly every way. It also now comes in two body styles. The five-passenger ‘Sport’ is on sale now with FWD or AWD, and is available with two engines: a 2.4-litre four cylinder with gasoline direct injection (GDI), and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four, also with GDI. All Sport models get a six-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual shift. The seven-passenger, long-wheelbase version is simply named the Santa Fe, and will replace the Veracruz sometime during in early 2013. Our group of journalists had an opportunity to drive the Sport, and I’ll admit that I didn’t expect something quite so refined. This starts with the exterior. Incremental changes in the grille, headlights, taillights, roofline, belt line, character lines and other areas combine for an effect that is significantly more upscale. Like the Tucson, it employs Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ styling. Along the sides are character

lines that pierce each door handle, along with sculpting that provides dimension and depth. This seamlessly flows into the protruding wheel arches, which house standard-equipped 17-inch Euroflange alloy wheels. The front end with hexagonal front grille is flanked by modern swept-back projector headlamps and black-accented fog lamps. The two-tone lower fascia projects a rugged, SUV appearance. For 2013, the Santa Fe is longer and lower, and has more interior space. Along with an increase in capacity is a cut in weight. This new model is 120 kg lighter than the 2012 (and 16 per cent stiffer), much of this due to a greater use of high-tensile steel. A more rigid body, better aerodynamics, improvements in damping and bushings, a double-layered windshield, and more insulation in the dash and floor, add up to a cabin that’s surprisingly hushed. The base, at $26,499, offers a

healthy list of standard amenities. The Santa Fe 2.4-litre FWD includes air conditioning, heated front seats, power windows with driver’s auto up/down and pinch protection, tilt/telescopic steering with audio and cruise controls, power lumbar support, Bluetooth and six-speaker AM/FM/XM/CD/ MP3 audio system with iPod/USB/ aux inputs. Also standard are second-row 40/20/40 split fold reclineable seats that drop to double the 1,002 rear cargo hold to 2,025 litres. And there’s ample under-

floor storage. This entry model also gets a rear spoiler, roof-rack side rails and the previously mentioned 17-inch alloys. Next in line, with the 2.4-litre engine, is the Premium FWD ($28,299), followed by Premium AWD ($30,299) and Luxury AWD ($33,899). The base turbo model comes in Premium trim, which will set you back $30,499 for FWD or $32,499 for AWD. There’s much more to be said about the all-new Santa Fe, and I hope to do a longer test – prob-

ably once the snow flies. Hyundai believes this is their most important new vehicle launch since the Elantra, and I would agree. Demand for this kind of vehicle shows no sign of slowing down, and the company points out that 21 per cent of new vehicle buyers are intending to purchase a CUV. And I’ll bet a lot of them will be putting the 2013 Santa Fe on their shopping list.

FIRST LOOK: CHEVROLET MALIBU 2013 In Canada, the mid-size segment represents 20 per cent of the market and the Malibu is again expected to appeal mainly to families and fleet customers.

The familiar bow tie badge on the front grille leaves no doubt the new-look Malibu is a Chevrolet. Base engine in the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will be an Ecotec 2.5-litre DOHC four cylinder, making 197 hp and 191 lb/ft of torque.

The 2013 Malibu has a much-improved interior look from the outgoing model. GM has ramped up the use of soft-touch materials and produced a more premium look to the cabin. A look at the back seat area of 2013 Honda Accord reveals room for three adults.

The redesigned 2013 Malibu has a totally new rear fascia with what GM calls Camaroinspired tail lamps. Regular Malibus will have 463 litres of cargo space in the trunk, but the ECO version like this one will have less space due to the lithium-ion battery pack in the trunk area behind the back seat.

n 411 ON THE MALIBU: For 2013, the Malibu will come with a four-cylinder strategy only. The base engine is an all-new Ecotec 2.5-litre four-cylinder. A turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder will be a late arrival this fall. As with the outgoing model, the new Malibu is based on the same Epsilon II platform as the LaCrosse. This is the most aerodynamic Chevy mid-size ever with a coefficient of drag of 0.29. The new look gives the car a more planted, sporty stance with 16, 17, 18 or 19-inch wheels available, depending upon the trim level. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no doubt itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Chevrolet with the signature dual port grille with Chevy bow-tie insignia, while the rear fascia and taillamps are Camaro-inspired, according to General Motors. This is the quietest Malibu ever, thanks in part to an enhanced body structure with a 20 per cent improvement in rear torsional stiffness over the current Malibu. GM packs a lot into the 2013 Malibu with 10 standard airbags, like the Cruze, and available lane departure/forward collision warning and rear camera systems. The car has more cargo volume than before with 463 litres of trunk space, up 34 litres from 2012. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also improved front and rear shoulder and hip room with 110 litres of increased interior space. The cabin of the Malibu features

the signature wrap-around dual cockpit design, again with a Camaroinspired gauge cluster. The cabin is much improved with a decidedly more upscale look including the use of much more soft touch materials. Suspension is MacPherson struts up front with a multi-link setup in the rear. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard as is a six-speed automatic transmission. A choice of 16, 17, 18 and 19-inch wheels is available depending upon the trim. Trim levels available in Canada are the LS ($24,995), 1LT ($25,325) 1LT ECO ($27, 940), 2LT ($27,915) 2LT ECO ($29,160) and LTZ ($32,540). GM says this is the most fuelefficient Malibu ever with â&#x20AC;&#x153;hybridlike fuel efficiency for non-hybrid like price.â&#x20AC;? The eAssist has an air-cooled lithium-ion battery that will provide up to 15 hp of electric power. The system also has regenerative braking, start stop technology and an active shutter system in the lower grille to aid engine efficiency. Four underbody panels also add to aerodynamics. All this adds up to fuel consumption ratings of 8.1 city/ 5.3 hwy/ 6.9 combined. All in all, the Malibu is a nice ride and should be a solid contender in what is becoming an even more competitive segment. Although TeRRA is presented as a design concept, not a technical exhibit, its proposed 4x4 fuel cell electric powertrain is far from imaginary. Powering the front wheels is the electric propulsion system currently featured in the Nissan LEAF. In each back wheel, providing all-wheel power as needed, is an in-wheel electric motor, based on the working prototypes featured in three successive PIVO concepts. As no drive shafts are required to power the rear wheels, there is no hump in the floor or

on the underbody. This allows for the flat boot floor and the underside bodypan. Under the bonnet is ample space for Nissan's hydrogen fuel cell stack: a flat, highly compact unit that features world-leading power density of 2.5kW/L. The latest in a series of Nissan fuel cells since 1996, the stack costs just one-sixth of its 2005 predecessor as the need for expensive precious metals has been slashed to one-quarter of the previous level.
