Huge sports SCARBOROUGH’S IMMACULATE RECEPTION investment celebrated in Scarborough MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com What’s being called the “largest ever investment in Canadian amateur sport” moved closer to fruition yesterday with an official ground breaking for the 2015 Pan American and Parapan Aquatics Centre and Field House at the University of Toronto Scarborough. “How exciting that we will have a chance to witness the thrill of these games in our own back yard,” Pickering-Scarborough East MP Corneliu Chisu said during ceremonies in a campus parking lot transformed into a carnival for the afternoon. With the great excavation for the facility on Military Trail behind him, Chisu, a former fencing champion, said he was pleased to hear the facility in his riding will house aquatics, fencing and Parapan sitting volleyball events in 2015. ratepayers of Ward 8, regardless of the cost. “Parents here in Toronto are exceptionally attached to democracy. Even though a byelection in Ward 8 would have a substantial cost, they want one because they don’t want to sacrifice the freedoms they know are precious...” Parents

as First Educators President Teresa Pierre told trustees at Wednesday, night’s five-hour special meeting of the board. “Afterall, what price can we put on democracy?” That sentiment was echoed by East York/Toronto Trustee Angela Kennedy, who put forth the motion

calling for a byelection, touting it as the more “tried and true” option. “We don’t want to punish the people in Ward 8 just because their trustee has been appointed the highest office in Canada – we want to give them a voice,” she said. “We were elected by representatives in each >>>COST, page 3
