Agincourt group says no advance warning given for doubling of train traffic

| Scarborough Mirror | Thursday, July 27, 2017

Stouffville GO expansion surprises residents RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Representatives of an Agincourt community group are disappointed no advance warning was provided to them about the provincial government’s plan to expand train service on the GO Transit Stouffville rail corridor. The Agincourt Village Community Association (AVCA) has long had concerns over how a significant increase in GO traffic will impact rail safety along the Stouffville corridor, said group president Rhoda Potter. She told the Mirror the announcement by Steven Del Duca on June 8 to add 17 more GO trips per day on the corridor was particularly disconcerting since the AVCA had met prior to that with the Ontario transportation minister to discuss their concerns. Yet, no signal was given by Del Duca then an announcement for expanded service was imminent. "We’ve asked for a plan many times ... to put measures in place to safely allow for an increase in trains," said Potter of the move which took effect as of Monday, June 26. "We see an advantage to having more service, which is why no one in this community has said stop the trains. But do it properly." Potter and the rest of the group learned about the boost to the Stouffville line - doubling existing

Agincourt Village Community Association members Rhoda Potter and Randy MacDougall discuss the group’s concerns for the announced increase in train traffic through Agincourt GO station. The group says it met with Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca but was not told about the doubling of train traffic and has fears for safety along the tracks. train trips per day from 17 to 34 - only after being informed by Scarborough city Coun. Chin Lee. Lee, who represents Scarborough-Rouge River, was himself taken aback by the announcement, said his executive assistant James Burchell, who confirmed no advance notice was provided ahead of Del Duca’s Stouffville expansion announcement. "This includes working with the City of Toronto to assess the best course of action to ensure that the crossings at Havendale, Huntingwood, McNicoll on our Stouffville railway corridor remain safe as we phase in increased service over the next 10 years," said Kitely.

"That is why Metrolinx has always communicated that service increases will be phased in throughout the duration of our expansion program." "Unfortunately for us, the action was completely out of touch with our concerns, and without informing our community," she said. Without responding specifically to the AVCA’s complaint, ministry spokesperson Alana Kitely said public updates are regularly made by the province’s transportation coordination arm Metro-

ted Burchell. Burchell said he’s heard plenty of concern registered about rail safety, particularly because children regularly cross the Stouffville tracks to get to school.

Investigators urge the "many attendees" who fled for their safety after the gunfire to now contact police. There were two other weekend shootings in Scarborough. March said he’s not shocked by the violence, suggesting it’s easier to get a gun than a job in certain neighbourhoods. "It doesn’t surprise us . because we know that the circumstances still exist for this to happen: too much guns on the streets, too much drugs on the streets, too many gangs on the streets, not enough jobs and not enough positive engagement for young people in those communities that are struggling," he said adding a more co-ordinated, consistent and sustainable effort is needed to deal with "gun violence and the issues that contribute to it." ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A Scarborough-based anti-violence group is calling on political leaders to combat gun violence following a violent weekend that saw 11 people shot, three fatally. "We need help from the political leaders in terms of addressing this issue," said Louis March, founder of Zero Gun Violence Movement. "And their refusal to call it a crisis and treat it accordingly in itself is criminal." Demal Graham, 25, was shot dead around 6:45 p.m. Sunday near Empringham Drive and McLevin Avenue in Malvern, less than 24 hours after three others were shot, two fatally, in the same neighbourhood. Police said a man in his mid-20s with facial hair and a brown complexion was seen speeding away on McLevin in a four-door sedan. At 1 a.m. Sunday, Rinaldo Cole, 33, and Dwayne Campbell, 30, were shot dead and a 28-year-old woman was wounded during a birthday barbecue in the backyard of the Lewis family home at 83 Gennela Sq. near Morningside Avenue and Sewells Road, also in

Dwayne Campbell, 30 (left) and Rinaldo Cole, 33 were shot dead at a birthday partly early Sunday morning in Scarborough. A woman was also seriously injured in the incident. On Tuesday, the Lewis family issued a statement denouncing the violence. "This annual barbecue is an expression of goodwill and a celebration of diversity and friendliness," a Lewis family member said. "We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the two young men who were killed. They too had hopes and dreams, they too were loved. They are human

Malvern "Unfortunately some people use these (gatherings) as an opportunity to settle scores," March said. "We’re extremely concerned because whenever you have shootings on this level, you know that there’s going to be retaliation." The 28-year-old women, who was celebrating her birthday, was listed in serious but stable condition in hospital.

MALVERN MURDER VICTIM REMEMBERED AS ’DEVOTED FATHER’ A man murdered in Malvern on Sunday was gunned down in the driveway of his childhood home as his daughter played outside, a GoFundMe page says. Demal Graham, 25, was shot dead around 6:45 p.m. near Empringham Drive and McLevin Avenue. A GoFundMe memorial page described Graham as a “devoted father, son and brother and an active member of the Malvern community who never missed an opportunity to run a joke with a neighbour or help a friend.” He believed music was a source of healing and was in the process of developing a “musical after-school program for youth,” the page said. Anyone with information on either murder is asked to call the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Toronto needs help dealing with legalized weed Drugs cost money. This is a universal truth: whether it’s the legal kind like alcohol or tobacco, or the banned stuff like cocaine or heroin, or, for now, marijuana, a habit is going to take a chunk out of anyone’s paycheque in addition to their life expectancy. As it is with us as frail individuals, so it is with the governments we elect, when we make the choice to turn on the tap - or light the pipe - of legalized intoxicants. And when legalized marijuana becomes a reality in Canada next year, it’s going to cost money. Last week, Mayor John Tory pointed this out, in the latest of a series of letters to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. Tory made the point as he was insisting that Toronto be heavily-involved in any of the decisions regarding implementing that legalization. Much of those decisions will come at a provincial level - notably, how and where the drug is sold, what the minimum age will be for purchasing marijuana, and so on. For Toronto, it’s particularly important to regulate where and how marijuana is sold. We know here from bitter experience with illegal dispensaries that relatively unregulated sales will go badly. The province should make sure that the sale of marijuana takes place well away from schools and community centres, and other places where young people and the vulnerable congregate. Although Tory didn’t mention it in his letter, the federal government would also do well to take a cue from Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen De Villa, who earlier this year wrote a report calling for the immediate decriminalization of marijuana. De Villa noted that many of the problems that the city is having now with illegal dispensaries would go away with an immediate legalization and subsequent regulation. But that is not to say that legalization, now or next year, will solve all of our problems. Tory notes that Dr. De Villa and Toronto’s health department will be very busy as marijuana use becomes more widespread, dealing with the very real public health issues that arise from use, and inevitable overuse, of the drug. The city will inevitably be involved in providing inspections and regulating locations. Police will take on new and potentially costly roles. Tory’s suggestion that the cost of those services come out of provincial tax on marijuana is a sensible one. The fallout of legalization will cost money, and it only makes sense that those who choose to use foot the bill.

Scarborough’s shoreline belongs to everyone The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has a collective headache coming this Friday as they vote on a new shoreline park. The Scarborough Waterfront Project will be monumental if it’s ever built. People will go to Bluffers Park Beach, and realize they can walk or bike from there to Pickering. They could visit Guild Park, Highland Creek, or the Rouge River. Most of the park already exists, You walk down Bellamy Ravine, see Marlene Hilton Moore’s steel statue, Passages, and the road below the Scarborough Bluffs stretches east. There’s landslide danger, especially this year, but the water’s blue, the bluffs lovely. People, most-

But now that the TRCA wants to finish the park spending perhaps $170 million - self-appointed defenders of the bluffs and beaches call the plan "malevolent," saying it’ll destroy sandy beaches "teaming with rare flora and fauna." On Friday, the TRCA board will listen as they paint their cause green. Hardening a shoreline

with stones to stop erosion doesn’t wipe out ecosystems. I walked Port Union Waterfront Park, which would connect to this one, after it opened. A mink darted across rocks. I saw killdeer, a gopher. I heard green frogs. The place was artificial, and hardened, but not devoid of life. The Authority says the two sandy beaches in question, one of which it will preserve, can only be accessed now by crossing private lands on homemade paths trampling sensitive vegetation. The new park will give visitors safe, legal access. But access shouldn’t just be for the few. There’s something unspoken in Scarborough: people living north of

Kingston Road aren’t supposed to go south of it. There’s no TTC bus to Bluffers. In summer, the lots fill. It’s a favourite ticketing spot. Legal parking anywhere around the bluffs is scarce, as if the city wants to discourage visitors. We hear about selfieseeking yahoos on the bluffs, the litter and campfires. But many Torontonians never go, and should. Scarborough’s shoreline and bluffs doesn’t just belong to people who live there. They belong to me, and they belong to everyone in Greater Toronto who wants to wander through public land. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Half a century of Caribbean Carnival Governments still do little for the festival, supporters say MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s Caribbean carnival has made memories for 50 years, and Horace Thorne did his best to preserve them. Uninterested in wearing costumes, Thorne joined the festival in 1969, and was soon running its Grande Parade. After 12 years of that, he was security chief for 17. Through it all, as the carnival became more commercial and grew into the largest of its kind in North America, Thorne took pictures. He’s shot and sorted roughly 3,000 - steel pan players, scenes at mas camps, Calypsonians, festival executives, the nittygritty - because he knew participants, or their children, would want to see them. "We must have some kind of archives we can look back on," Thorne, 81, said last week, watching visitors to Scarborough Civic Centre follow his 50th anniversary exhibit, ’From Then to Now’, around the rotunda. "I was not commissioned to do anything. I did it on my own." Thorne’s framed collages held such rarities as the first carnival identification badges, which he made, and images of Toronto masqueraders and musicians in Hong Kong for Lunar New Year in 2004 and 2005, when China’s special administrative region was eager to recapture tourists it lost to SARS. "They invited 50 of us," Thorne recalled. The festival, as he said, "has its warts, just like everything else," and Thorne talked about those too. One is the pittance governments give the festival compared to the money it brings in. Another is people feel-

(Clockwise from top) Chantelle Waldron gets a closer look at one of the items on display in ’The Art of Caribbean Carnival’ exhibition at Tropicana Community Services; Horace Thorne has taken thousands of photos of Carnival, with many of them now on display as part of an exhibit at the Scarborough Civic Centre; Louis Saldenah has taken band of the year honours at Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival 17 times and been its runner up 13 times. ing entitled to join masqueraders, who pay to wear a costume, in parades. "You don’t go into the Lion Dance, you don’t go into the Santa Claus Parade," Thorne argued. Yet another is the festival has gotten away from its roots in Caribbean culture. Some of Thorne’s early parade shots show stilt walkers, Blue Devils and other traditional costumes. "It’s not only the bikini and the beads," said Thorne, who wants people to know the significance of carnival and how it began.

"Young people, if you don’t know where you come from, you wouldn’t have respect for it." As people get set for the August 3 King and Queen Show at Lamport Stadium and Grande Parade, August 5 at Exhibition Place, mas camps for the 11 carnival bands, 10 of them in Scarborough, are busy. In Malvern, Louis Saldenah, who’s won band of the year 17 times, and runner up in 13 more, worked alongside some of his 150 volunteers. He’s supplying 4,200 cos-

tumes as the festival’s biggest band. He started with 98 masqueraders in 1977, back when bands were more numerous but smaller. Federal and provincial governments, Saldenah said, are the festival’s main beneficiaries, but contribute almost nothing. "We, as Caribbean people, should be more politically involved." With more money, the festival can properly secure the parade route, bring in young band leaders and double the number

of participants, he predicted. "Instead of having 9,000 people in costume, we could have 20,000 people in costume." He said the shift from traditional costumes to bikinis, beads and feathers is one band leaders, including himself, had to make. "The young people are the ones that are participating, and we have to give them what they want. Otherwise, they wouldn’t buy the costumes." People are aware of historical mas, but prefer to

play in bands that have two-piece costumes and the seven or eight sections, said Saldenah, whose masqueraders this year include 900 Americans, plus people from England, Australia, Dubai and the Caribbean. "If I changed to a lot of cloth in my presentation, I would most likely get 500 to 600 people." At the Cajuca Mas Arts Producers mas camp in mid-Scarborough, cofounders Clarence and Jackie Forde are strong critics of the predominant festival costumes while reintroducing traditional ones through their Ol’ Time Carnival show. Last year, they brought back blousey Dame Lorraines, meant to mock slave owners’ wives, Blue Devils, and the tough-talking Midnight Robber. This time, Ol’ Time Carnival will appear at more places, including Scarborough’s Maidavale Park on August 19, adding new characters, including the stilt-walking orator, Pierrot Grenade, the Shortknee from Grenada, the Soucyant or sucubbus, stick fighters and white-faced minstrels - all spawned by colonialism in the Caribbean. "We do this because it’s not just beads and feathers," Jackie Forde said. Nearby, finishing a costume panel, was Gemma Nicolson, one of many Scarborough volunteers toiling with pins, glue guns or welding torches to make carnival possible. "If you were born in Trinidad, you know why. Everybody gets involved," Nicolson said. Cajuca is theatre, not a festival band. But there are signs some bands also want to return to carnival’s cultural roots. "You’re going to be seeing traditional mas on the road," Venom Carnival’s first-time leader Hayden Joseph said Monday. On costumes, Joseph said, Toronto’s band leaders "follow what’s in Trinidad, but Trinidad is going backwards to the old days."

reaching to those already engaged. As much as I’ve outreached to youth in classrooms, boardrooms and community centres, I’ve also done my listening a.k.a. my "work" - while riding the TTC, sitting in the Scarborough Town Centre food court, or standing on the curbside. Just because you deem a person "disengaged" doesn’t mean they don’t care or have an opinion. From public transit and green spaces to affordable child care and housing, we’ve seen what can happen when not everyone is invited to the table to plan and build. The most marginalized are often left out, and consequently left behind. That doesn’t have to be the case moving forward.

I’ve got city building on my mind. Ahead of a speaking engagement for the CivicAction Leadership Foundation at the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club on the topic, I’ve been doing some reflecting on my experiences as a resident, a journalist, a former facilitator of youth programming and a volunteer. I’ve pulled the following learnings I can share with the participants at this event, who are an impressive group ranging from communications executives to policy advisers and academics. Listen. No, really, listen. Too often I find that in the community, people in leadership roles sweep in, sleeves rolled up, to implement cookie-cutter solutions to what they perceive to be "problems." Take a step back and listen first. Is your help wanted? And, if the community indeed identifies a problem, perhaps your role is to support

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto and Region Conservation Authority board members face a long meeting Friday, July 28, deciding whether to endorse plans for a $170-million waterfront park system below the Scarborough Bluffs. Surfers and self-appointed defenders of the "wild bluffs" and the shoreline’s sandy beaches oppose the Scarborough Waterfront Project, and several will speak against it. One, author Jane Fairburn, calls the proposed trail links between East Point Park and Bluffers Beach "a concrete highway to nowhere that obliterates the beach destroys habits for threatened species." People who surf off Bluffers say the park proposal will remove favourable wave conditions. Though the TRCA changed the plan to preserve a sandy beach at East Point, beach defenders say another below Gray Abbey Park will be lost to shoreline hardening. Despite "vehement resistance" to its latest version, "the TRCA is marching ahead with its preordained plan and attempting to ram this malevolent, $170 million, 12-year disruptive boondoggle down the throats of taxpayers," Fairburn wrote to the board this month. The TRCA says a formal park system (see

waterfront@trca.on.ca) is needed to give the public access to the shore, and part of the cost, which includes a 50 per cent contingency fund, will be buying property. Most shoreline between East Point and Bluffers is already "hardened," rebuilt with stone to reduce bluff erosion. Many residents already use a shoreline construction road east of the Bellamy Ravine. The conservation authority, however, maintains the road and existing paths down to the shore aren’t safe, and people using the remaining sandy beaches are crossing private land and trampling "sensitive vegetation communities." At least one resident group, the Centennial Community and Recreation Association, supports the project, and the Waterfront Regeneration Trust, working toward a continuous Great Lakes Waterfront Trail for 25 years, says it "will be a much desired and used public space." The nonprofit agency is urging the TRCA and City of Toronto to approve and build it, saying that, "closing the gap in Scarborough with an initiative that reflects the vision and collective mandate for a regenerated, publicly accessible, connected waterfront has been long awaited." Board members will vote at TRCA’s headquarters in Vaughan.

reduce the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

Local film gets billing on Just for Laughs MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Prom Night, written and directed by a first-time Scarborough filmmaker who shot the short comedy in her Port Union home, takes centre stage at Just For Laughs this week. The 14-minute story of cringeworthy dads beat hundreds of other entries in Kevin Hart’s Eat My Shorts contest, but it would never have been made if Samantha MacAdam hadn’t felt “pent up” after delivering a daughter. “It was all just me at home on maternity leave,” she said this week. After she wrote Prom Night, MacAdam got a Bell Media grant and, using emails and a subscription to the industry site IMDb, enlisted actors Gerry Dee (Scarborough-born star of CBC’s Mr. D), Frank Spadone, Marty Adams and Chandra Michaels. The story, about three overprotective fathers who “find a positive pregnancy test and go on a mission to find out which one of their teens is pregnant,” isn’t exactly safe for work. It was a hit in the competition, staying in the top five in votes by July 15, which

earned it a screening at JFL in Montreal this Thursday. At least one of the screened shorts gets a development deal with Hart’s production company and Lionsgate, co-presenter of the contest. You can still see Prom Night and vote for it at https://contest.laughoutloud.com/nominee/promnight MacAdam, a video editor who grew up in Agincourt and went to Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School, will walk the red carpet with Hart on Thursday night, and feels like she’s already won. She needed a nice, inviting suburb for Prom Night, and Port Union fit the bill, as did her house. “Why would I go anywhere else?” she asked. Shooting was done over two days during last December, which had to stand in for June. “We had to get rid of our Christmas decorations. That was the only bummer,” said MacAdam, who has an eye on Will Ferrell for the feature-length version she’s writing now. Her advice to aspiring filmmakers? Believe if you like your project, others will too. “Do it,” MacAdam said. “You gotta just go with your gut, and stay disciplined.”

add more cold foods and salads to your meal plans. Check humidity levels. Humid homes feel hotter, so use exhaust fans in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas to expel the air directly outside. Avoid air-drying clothes inside your home and store firewood outdoors.

Install a ceiling fan. Of all the ways to cool your home, getting the air moving is the least costly and most energy efficient. A ceiling fan allows you to raise your thermostat by 4°C without affecting your comfort. Set blades to run in a counter-clockwise direction to circulate cool air downwards.

Turn it off. Lights, appliances and home electronics use a lot of power and give off heat. During the summer, it’s more important than ever to turn them off when you aren’t using them.

Set to save. Set your thermostat to 25°C when you’re at home. Raise it to 28°C — or turn it off — when you’re away.

Diary of Canadian soldier donated to Imperial War Museum Lieut. John Hayward immigrated to Toronto, married, before enlisting to fight in First World War STEPHEN HAYWARD newsroom@insidetoronto.com

insidetoronto.com

A young army officer’s vivid front line account of life on the Western Front has been revealed for the first time - 100 years after he was killed in action. Lieut. John Hayward recorded the "terrible fighting" and "rotten" conditions endured by First World War Canadian troops, and the rising toll of his dead and wounded comrades. The hellish events are described in a personal diary he kept while serving with the Canadian army on battlefields in Belgium and France in 1916 and 1917, including at Vimy. Now his family has donated the handwritten journal to the world famous Imperial War Museum in London, where it will be part of its historic archive. Hayward’s battlefield diary - and an earlier journal from 1912 - were given to one of his great nephews, a Brit with the same first name. John Coppen received

them from Hayward’s daughter Kate, then 87, when he visited Canada and the family home in Scarborough, in 2004. She died four years later, but her daughters Bonnie, who lives in North York, and Alane, who lives in Scarborough, continued to keep in touch with their British cousin. Coppen, who lives in Rainham, Kent, England, spent three years painstakingly transcribing both diaries including Hayward’s shorthand entries which have now been given a permanent home at the Imperial War Museum. "The war robbed Bertha of her husband, and Kate of her father. But the diaries will serve to preserve his memory and the selflessness he showed, along with countless others, in the service of his country," Coppen said. The induction of the diaries into the archive come ahead of ceremonies in Belgium to mark the centenary of Passchendaele, one of the bloodiest battles of the war, where Hayward, 25, was fatally wounded - one

Lieut. John Hayward died in the First World War. During battle, he kept a personal diary, which has now been donated to the world famous Imperial War Museum with his family’s blessing. Below, excerpts from his diary from the trenches. of 15,600 Canadian casualties - in October 1917. A cattle dealer’s son, Hayward was the second eldest of nine children

from Lewisham, south London. He moved to Toronto in 1911 and worked as a railway clerk and private secretary, before joining

the 3rd Brigade of the Canadian Field Artillery at the outbreak of "war to end war" in 1914. The pocket sized diary some of which Hayward wrote in shorthand - documents the brutal reality of trench warfare, along with routine activities, such as attending church parades, playing cards, writing letters home and listening to records. In one entry, Hayward calmly described how he cheated death while manning an observation post, writing: "Fairly busy day. Sniper nearly got me ...." Despite coming under almost constant bombardment, Hayward’s biggest grumble was the "miserable" weather, which turned his living quarters into a "quagmire," and held up supplies and letters from home. When leave was cancelled, he wrote: "Feeling blue. Weather rotten, everything rotten." In another entry, he wrote: "The constant rain makes everything damp and one goes up to the observation post through a sea of mud." Two weeks later, he wrote: "Our sleeping trench caved in and mess looks like doing so. ... Mud up to the waist."

But Hayward also recorded happier times. Returning to his parents’ home in London on leave, he was reunited with his Canadian wife, Bertha, who’d followed him across the Atlantic to be near him. After a weekend spent going to the London Hippodrome and Madam Tussauds, he wrote: "During these days it has been some whirl." Three-and-a-half months later, he was back with his gun battery and ordered into northern France. He recorded the non-stop shelling by both sides and the territory gained and lost during the "terrible fighting" at the battle of the Somme. Later, he described how groups of German prisoners were brought in after being "driven mad" by Allied artillery fire and added: "One cannot but feel sorry for them, even though they are only getting what we endured in the first days at Ypres." But his own side did "not always escape without retaliation." With depressing regularity, Hayward recorded the names of men killed and wounded as they advanced towards the enemy lines, only to be pushed l See HAYWARD, page 21

back to their old positions. In February 1917 Hayward was given leave to return to England for the birth of his daughter, Kate, but after just two weeks with his family he was back in northern France, where his brigade saw action at the battle of Vimy Ridge, which claimed the lives of 3,600 more Canadians. Once again, he survived the fighting, but his fortune would not last. Canadian army records show that on Oct. 19, 1917, he was wounded and died on the way to a "dressing station," near Passchendaele, in the third battle of Ypres. Three weeks later, Bertha sailed home to Canada with eightmonth-old Kate, on the transatlantic liner Olympic, sister ship to the Titanic. Hayward, whose body lies in a Commonwealth war cemetery in Ypres, is remembered at the family’s gravesite in London, where his younger brother George - a Royal Flying Corps officer and Military Cross holder who died in a flying accident after the war - is buried alongside other family members.

Lieut. John Hayward’s granddaughter Alane Simmonds says she’s proud that the army officer’s First World War diary will now be part of the Imperial War Museum’s historic archive. “I’m so proud,” the longtime Scarborough resident said in an interview. “I couldn’t be prouder that he was part of what changed the world.” Simmonds, 67, noted she only recently realized that her grandfather’s diary was an important artifact. “And it was really quite exciting once my head got around it,” she said. Simmonds said her grandmother Bertha and grandfather John met in the Sunnyside neighbourhood in Toronto’s west end and got married before the war. “They met and fell in love and he had to go back to the war and she followed,” Simmond said. “It was really quite romantic, actually.” Bertha never remarried after John was fatally wounded in the Battle of Passchendaele in October 1917. “(John) was her one true love,” Simmonds said. “The sad part for me was that their relationship was so short … and my mom never knew her father because she was just six months old when he died.” Simmonds said her grandmother “always talked” about John. “He was a British gentleman. That’s how she referred to him,” Simmonds said. “They were very much in love.”

‘Hayward’s widow never remarried’

Stephen Hayward, a British journalist at the London-based Sunday Mirror, knew little about his great uncle John’s life in the Canadian army until reading his wartime diary this year. On the 100th anniversary of Passchendaele, he details John’s experiences on the Western Front. Hayward family/photos

4 sun safety tips for summer Sun safety is more than just sunscreen. Read on to keep you and your family totally protected.

APPLY ENOUGH SUNSCREEN Taking the time to apply your sunscreen correctly is the main factor in how well your sunscreen will protect you. While the amount of sunscreen varies from person to person, the rule of thumb is an ample, visible layer. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and after sweating, swimming, or towelling off.

BE MINDFUL Even after properly applying a high SPF sunscreen, and then reapplying often, it’s still possible to get too much sun. That’s because no sunscreen can block 100 per cent of the sun’s rays, and the sun’s strength varies depending on the time of day, the time of year, and where you are. You need to know your limit and seek shade when you’ve reached it.

COVER UP Donning additional protective clothing long sleeves and a big, floppy hat means skin is exposed. Less exposed skin means sunscreen is needed — and that can save and your family big bucks, as well as keep safe in the sun.

like less less you you

SEEK OR CREATE SHADE Especially during the peak sun hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seeking shade is particularly important early in the season — before your skin has acclimated to the sun or while you’re enjoying a tropical vacation. Head for the shade and check your skin periodically for signs of a burn. If your skin is starting to turn pink, the process of burning has already begun, and no amount of sunscreen can stop it. It is crucial that you get out of the sun immediately. We like to keep a tin of After Sun Balm in the fridge or cooler and apply it right after sun exposure. The coolness of the balm feels good and moisturizes while delivering antioxidants to sunparched skin. Autism awareness centre could be open by year’s end MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Amir Akbari stood in a hallway that doesn’t exist yet, in front of future therapy rooms marked on the cement floor with painter’s tape. "Visions are going to come to life" in the new home of the South Asian Autism Awareness Centre (SAAAC), the group’s creative director told around 100 volunteers, clients and other supporters on Friday, July 21. They were at a "before party" to imagine the 11,000-square-foot, City of Toronto-owned building on Progress Avenue as it could be by year’s end.

For many, it will be a second home, the next step on a journey, to "defeat ignorance, embrace difference and conquer stigma" that Geetha Moorthy began in 2008. To support family and friends then, Moorthy, SAAAC’s executive director, put children with autism in her own living room and basement. The centre and its client base grew, moving in 2012 to an Ellesmere Road storefront. Twice that size, the Progress building, which sat unused for a decade, is a golden chance. It’s still a "scruffy, musty place" sitting "in the back end of nowhere," but renovations are about

to start, and it will shine, said Scarborough Centre Coun. Glenn De Baeremaeker. "We are going to turn this into a Taj Mahal." De Baeremaeker got the city to contribute $620,000. Another $2 million will be spent building a fiveacre park on the centre’s doorstep during 2019 and 2020. The new SAAAC needs to raise $200,000 more by December, and its supporters must be bold enough to ask for it, De Baeremaeker said. People don’t realize how many children and families in the South Asian community are affected by autism, said Arv-

nan Kuven, a Pickering man whose company, CondoGeek, is a SAAAC sponsor. But the group needs bigger sponsors and monthly donors, he said. "There’s a huge need for what we’re doing here, something that’s been overlooked over the years" Kuven added. "A couple of bucks from our pocket goes a long way here." Neethan Shan, another Scarborough councillor, said SAAAC acts as a bridge for people facing extra barriers to getting autism-related services. "It’s not about segregation, it’s about levelling the playing field."

Cycle Toronto encouraging neighbourhood events People interested in promoting cycling in Scarborough are invited to a planning meeting for new projects on Thursday, July 27. The Scarborough District Advocacy Event will let active cycling groups in Scarborough pitch a campaign, project, or event for any of Scarborough’s 10 municipal wards and call on volunteers to sign up. Cycle Toronto is organizing the meeting as "a way to make it easier for new vol-

unteers to get involved in ward advocacy" and to build consensus on what members of the cycling community want. "It’s a chance to connect and co-ordinate, and to take our bike advocacy to the next level," the group says in a release. Thursday’s meeting is at AccessPoint on Danforth, a Danforth Avenue community hub just east of Victoria Park Avenue, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
