Newly merged hospital for Scarborough has three campuses MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Elizabeth Buller was CEO of Toronto’s St. Joseph’s Health Centre. She’s now CEO of the newly merged Scarborough and Rouge Hospital, which includes the Scarborough Hospital’s two campuses and the Centenary campus of the former Rouge Valley Health System. Q. How many years did you sign on for, and what can you do for this hospital in that time? A. I have a five-year contract, and we’ve started rolling as of July 17. I think it’s one of the unique opportunities in Ontario, if not the country, right now. In that time, we should absolutely create an integrated system of our three sites. We’ll have a strategic plan, we’ll have a master plan. We should be well underway with starting some of our redevelopment projects. Q. How’s the merger going? There were estimated merger costs of about $30 million. Savings were said to be minimal. Different campuses of this hospital have different ways of
doing things. A. The merger is going well. They had a six-month strategy as I arrived, and a 100-day plan. All of those initiatives are on track, and fully supported. We’re still working with (Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-term Care) to recover some of the integration costs. Q. You inherited what’s now the third-biggest community hospital in Ontario, but you have some of the oldest operating rooms in Ontario, emergency rooms, like this one at Centenary, receiving many more patients than they’re designed to handle. What can you do about this? A. Centenary has a $500,000 grant to do some planning around how we will redevelop the emergency at Centenary. We have a $2.2-million master planning grant from the ministry to look at all of those areas, which would include our operating rooms. It’s an area that we will pay heavy attention to. I’ve had several meetings with the ministry already. They remain committed to the projects, to putting the funding for-
ward for Scarborough. Q. Before this merger, it was suggested the master planning study would start within one year. When is it starting, because that study is tied to major investments like redoing the ORs at the General campus, and to a new "comprehensive" hospital site for Scarborough? A. I started that work immediately with our senior team. We’re just finalizing the details of that for both the strategic plan and the master planning work, with the hope to begin that in September, early October. It takes a while to complete master planning, anywhere from 12 to 24 months. We’re hoping to have some high-level information by no later than March. We want to at least have a directional plan for our master plan, and then we’ll get into the details work throughout the coming year. Q. I guess you can understand there’s frustration in Scarborough on what people perceive as other areas of the province or city getting more capital investments. A. That’s why I think

this is a very exciting time for Scarborough. I think there’s some reality that it’s been underinvested in over the years. There’s very strong recognition of that. So the frustrations are real, and that’s our opportunity now to turn that around. Part of our master planning process will be ensuring that we engage with the community comprehensively, with all of Scarborough, in how we look at what’s the health system for the future for Scarborough. Q. How does this hospital raise a lot more money than it has up to this point? A. As we do our strategic planning and create our new vision and our mission, we will gather the
community around and engage the community in recognizing this is their health system, this is their hospital. It’ll be a big part of our work. I think we’ll be able to attract the donors. At St. Joe’s we had a similar problem when I started there. It’s re-invigorating and helping people understand the role of community hospitals, and how important they are to you. We need to look at who is from Scarborough. They may be elsewhere, but giving back to your community and where you were raised and how important that was forming you and your life. We’ll be looking to attract not just people within our community but those
who have an attachment. Q. The Bridletowne Community Hub missed a City of Toronto deadline. Now, it has until December. What might the hospital do if that deadline isn’t reached, because the hub is where the hospital’s dialysis unit is supposed to go? A. We’re looking at how we could phase it so the hospital goes ahead while the YMCA (of Greater Toronto, chosen as the leaseholder) comes along. We’re working at not being completely tied to their timing. That will be positive, so we can at least get started with the hospital portion. We need it for the community. We’re bursting at the seams with needs for our dialysis patients.

The director of a company which ran convenience stores in five Scarborough Shell stations received a jail sentence last week for failing to pay employee wages. Luai Namo was given 30 days, and fines totaling $40,000, in a Newmarket court on Wednesday, August 16. The Province of Ontario said the numbered company, which has its head office in Richmond Hill, had been ordered to pay 14 claimants by a Ministry of Labour employment standards officer, but failed to do so. The company was fined $84,000, or $6,000 for each of the 14 counts. Of the 14 claimants, 12 were making Ontario’s minimum wage, the ministry said in a release. The stores were in stations at 242 Eglinton Ave. E., 640 Markham Rd., 1201 Markham Rd., 3051 Lawrence Ave. E. and at 1805 Victoria Park Ave. The wages owed totaled $46,537.45, and ranged from $400 to $5,000, "all of which remain outstanding," the ministry said. Asked for comment, Cameron Yost, a spokesperson, said Shell Canada is "disap-

"The best cooking has to come from the heart to the hand," explained Damu, or K. Damodaran, a celebrity whose cooking shows have aired in South India for two decades. "With love and affection, the food will not be a failure." That Damu has flown to Canada to demonstrate his skills at Tamil Fest - as he has for its previous two years - shows the scale and importance of what’s happening on Scarborough’s Markham Road this weekend. To Kandiah Rajakulansingam, a catering business owner known as Babu, a festival partnership with Damu, often recognized by Tamil-Canadians in Scarborough and Markham, is a winning lottery ticket. "I want to bring my standard up to the next level, so I need his help," Rajakulansingam said this week at his Sheppard Avenue East store. Though Damu’s something of
a purist, researching traditional village recipes, and insisting food mixed with the hands tastes better, much of Tamil cuisine in Canada is evolving. Kothu Rotu, a chop-up grill dish, is flexible enough to incorporate everything from jerk chicken to octopi. Then there’s Jaffna Fries. Dressed with chilies and onions, which grow around the northern Sri Lankan city many Greater Toronto Tamil families called home, the fries are doused with ranch dressing and roasted garlic. Van Thevan, a chef whose specialty was Italian cuisine, invented them when he opened Wow! Wing House, whose 123 flavours, many packing high heat, have such names as Town of Jaffna and Texas Homicide. "This town likes spicy. I couldn’t believe it myself," Thevan said Tuesday at his shop on Markham’s New Delhi Drive. On Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27, his fries and wings vie with other Tamil delicacies, including kothu, hoppers, dosas and "short eats" - mutton rolls, samosas, fish patties - as

Charlottesville proves we must unite against hate After the events in Charlottesville and their aftermath this month, we in Canada might be tempted to allow just a little bit of smugness amid the horror we feel at the images of swastikas and torches on parade - at the evil brutality of Heather Heyer’s murder there. We should strive to avoid that. Their president aside, many Americans, most perhaps, have responded to the resurgence of neo-Nazism and white supremacy with powerful and principled rejection. America may remain bitterly divided, with a cut still very much in need of healing sustained during that country’s Civil War. But its loudest voices - again, excepting President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed - are most hateful when they speak of hate itself. Canada isn’t in nearly that sort of trouble, or so it seems. We are open to immigration, welcoming of refugees, inclusive and kind-hearted. If there is evidence to the contrary, surely it is a trifling bit, or if larger and more systemic, then it is something that we have common capacity to correct. Thinking that is a mistake, particularly if one is doing so from the point of view of the dominant, which is to say white, culture. Setting our own prime minister’s "sunny ways" narrative aside, Canada has a history of hateful rhetoric and fascist movements, and Toronto has too often been at the centre of it. The 1930s’ Christie Pits riot in which real Nazi supporters clashed with Jewish and Italian groups is a good touchstone, but there have been more: the recentlypassed Holocaust-denier Ernst Zündel was a Torontonian for many years, peddling his hate from a house in Cabbagetown. The Heritage Front neo-Nazi organization had a presence in Toronto before it disbanded in 2005. More recently, Torontonians in the east end have found their mailboxes filled with the hate-filled screeds from Your Ward News, a publication that Canada Post will no longer deliver for that reason. And of course it is Toronto where now-former Rebel Media correspondent Faith Goldy is based. The far-right website let her go just last week after she appeared on a neo-Nazi podcast, following her attendance at the Charlottesville rally. It would be wrong to say that Torontonians have tolerated this sort of thing all these years; we haven’t. But we have taken false comfort, in the belief that the seeds of racism and out-and-out Nazism that have been blowing through the gutters will never truly take root.

the Annex. I saw him disrupt a demonstration supporting the homeless in St. Jamestown; he wore roller skates and a bed sheet. At 53, he’s on disability payments, has back problems, liver problems, a busted foot. A program for adults living with serious mental illness pays his rent. But his landlord in Scarborough’s Kingston-Galloway area wants him out. Running to replace the late Rob Ford as an Etobicoke councillor last August, Clarke kept hanging makeshift signs outside his building and from his balcony. The landlord, and Clarke’s own social worker, testified this was related to mental illness. Clarke says he’s exercis-
ing his right to campaign. He maintains the landlord, forced by his complaints to clean up his building’s playground and make various repairs, wants him out for that. "I told them the only way they can win is if I wind up dead or in hospital." Last Friday, he went to Divisional Court to get more time for an appeal. If evicted, he’ll be homeless again. Clarke can annoy. He videotapes his arguments. But I understand now: as long as Clarke runs for office, Toronto’s homeless, its truly marginalized, its ill, cannot completely be ignored. JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Thirteen years ago, Scarborough resident Jocelyn Godroy left behind her three children and loved ones in The Philippines to take care of other people’s kids and elderly family members. For the first four years, she worked as a domestic helper in Hong Kong. In 2008, Godroy came to Canada to work as a live-in caregiver. In all of those years, she’s only been able to return home on three occasions. Godroy has missed countless special occasions and milestones in her children’s lives, and doesn’t know when her family will be reunited again. She’s also been waiting for nearly seven years to find out if her application to bring her children over to Canada has been approved. "You’re taking care of other children but you can’t take care of your own kids," an emotional Godroy said
during a recent news conference at the Workers’ Action Centre on Spadina Avenue. "Please eradicate the backlog. It’s so unfair for us, so unfair." Under Canadian law, those who enter the country under the live-in caregivers program have the right to apply to sponsor their family after working in Canada for two years. Godroy, whose marriage has broken down due to the time and distance apart, did just that in late 2010. And while the stories of these live-in caregivers aren’t atypical, they aren’t acceptable, said Vancouver East NDP MP Jenny Kwan said during the conference. Kwan, who is the NDP’s critic for immigration, refugees and citizenship, said much more must be done to better the lives of those who come to Canada to take care of others. Currently, the average application processing time for live-in caregivers is fourand-a-half years.

nadian government to take immediate action to end backlogs and processing delays that are keeping an estimated 40,000 live-in caregivers from reuniting with their families. To remedy this situation, the New Democrats are pro-
posing a five-step plan that includes immediately establishing a special measure to process lengthy backlogs in the live-in caregivers stream, ensuring the processing standard does not exceed 12 months, requiring only one medical exam for
live-in caregivers, their spouse, and their children prior to entering Canada, removing the previous Conservative government’s cap on the number of permanent resident visas issued annually to the new streams of caregiver programs (currently 5,5000 in total) and eliminating the one-year post-secondary education requirement for permanent residency. Lastly, going forward, the NDP wants the principal that "if you are good enough to work, you are good enough to stay" implemented through the expansion of the immigration system so that live-in caregivers can come to Canada as permanent residents from the outset. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said it is taking the matter seriously and is committed to taking steps to address the backlog. Notice of Completion Transit Project Assessment Process Scarborough Subway Extension – Environmental Project Report The Project The City of Toronto, together with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) have completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) for the planned extension of the Bloor-Danforth Subway (Line 2), express from Kennedy Station to Scarborough Centre. The proposed Scarborough Subway Extension will replace the existing Scarborough Rapid Transit (Line 3), and is an important component of the Scarborough Transit Network Plan. The proposed station will be located on the west side of McCowan Road, between Triton Road and Progress Avenue, beneath a future extension of Borough Drive. Malvern mom seeks answers in son’s shooting death ’We’re victims for the rest of our lives’ ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A few hours before he was murdered, Demal Graham was talking about the gun violence in Scarborough. "Well, it’s the summer, and things are always crazy in the summer," the 25year-old told his mom Shauna Brown at about 3 p.m. July 23. Then he told his mother about a triple shooting that happened about 14 hours earlier: two men were shot dead and a 28-year-old woman was shot and wounded during her birthday barbecue in the backyard of a home on Gennela Square. Graham wasn’t at the barbecue though he was friends with the birthday girl. "I’m going to visit her in the hospital later this week," he told his mom. Then Brown went out. When she returned just after 6 p.m., Graham was sitting on the front steps of their Empringham Drive townhouse with family and friends. "We were all laughing and everything was great," Brown said. At 6:45 p.m., Brown was upstairs when she heard a gunshot. "I came running outside and found him (Graham) in the driveway next to my car," she said, noting there was nothing she could do to save him. Police said a man in his mid-20s with some facial hair and a brown complexion, wearing a hooded sweatshirt was seen speeding away in a light coloured four-door sedan. Graham was pronounced dead on scene. "There were blessings," Brown said of the tragedy. "I was the first person to him, so the fact that I was able to be there, I almost feel as if I was there when he left me to be with his dad." (Graham’s father

Another blessing: "We were all on good terms with each other. We just had a conversation half an hour before," Brown said. But then, Brown said, there’s also a daily reminder of the murder "every time I walk out of my front door, which is hard to deal with." Demal Trevor Graham, known to family and friends as Milli, was born at Toronto East General Hospital (now called Michael Garron Hospital) on Oct. 4, 1991 and moved to Scarborough at six months of age. He went to Military Trail Public School, Morrish Public School, Chief Dan George Public School, West Hill Collegiate and Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School (now known as St. Mother Teresa Catholic Academy). "As a kid, he was always
funny. He was quiet and kind of kept to himself, but when you got to know him, he was always outgoing, energetic," Brown said. Graham started writing music at age 12, when he lost his dad. "That was his way to outlet his feelings and life experiences and things that he was going through," said Brown. "He’s of course improved and advanced and matured in terms of his songwriting abilities. . He’s written songs about his friends, his dad, even songs just about the daily struggles living where we live." Graham was recently given a grant to start a music program for youth in Malvern. "He wanted them to be involved in every aspect of (music): the songwriting, the recording, the producing," said Brown. "And at the end of the program, he wanted to have a big barbecue where the kids could
have a stage to share what they’ve created." After high school, Graham became a father, and he also endured some challenges. "There were times that he struggled," Brown said. "However, he was always accountable . and took responsibility for any action that he ever did, right or wrong." Graham recently completed some courses and was planning to become a general labourer. "He was definitely on the right path in terms of the decisions and the direction that his life was going," Brown said. "Things were definitely starting to look up for him." Graham, Brown stressed, was also an "amazing" dad. "He was a hands-on father from the day that my granddaughter was born, and he saw her every weekend," she said. On the day he was mur-
dered, Graham surprised his six-year-old daughter and took her to the movies. "That’s more or less the last memory that she has of spending time with him," Brown said. Brown is also struggling to understand why her son was murdered. "He didn’t have a problem with anybody. He was a person who stayed at home and took care of his family," she said. "My only theory is that (he was in) the wrong place at the wrong time."
Brown is urging anyone with information to come forward to police. "When that person decided to make that decision to pull that trigger and use a gun to take my son’s life, it gave us a life sentence and we’re victims for the rest of our lives," she said. Merril Collection has a new librarian in charge DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Sephora Hosein grew up the daughter of a film projectionist and she credits her father with beginning her lifelong interest in science fiction and fantasy. "I’m just a lifelong fan," says Hosein in her office at the Lillian H. Smith Branch of the Toronto Public Library. "I grew up reading it, grew up watching it. My dad was a projectionist so I grew up watching films. It was a very strange childhood." Hosein is two months into what can only be a dream job for her - that of the new collection head of the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Speculation. She is the first new head of the 47year-old collection in more than three decades. The Merril collection is one of, if not the, largest public research collection of its kind in North Amer-
ica, with more than 72,000 items of science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction. It was founded in 1970 as the Spaced Out Library, when American science fiction writer and editor Judith Merril left the U.S. for Toronto as a conscientious objector against the Vietnam War. Merril donated her personal collection of science fiction to the Toronto Public Library, and established an endowment to help the library start work on an ambitious plan: to acquire and archive one copy of every speculative book published in the English language. "It’s an extremely unique kind of collection in general in a public library setting, to be publicly available, to encourage the level of access that we do - that’s the one thing," says Hosein. "Then on a grander scale, I’m told that the Merril is a premier collection among the world’s premier

Much of the collection is locked away in climate-controlled stacks, and as she walks through those stacks, "I joke that I’m going to get a neck injury," she says. Sadly, only library staff can walk through the stacks themselves. But researchers and academics who know what to ask for from the knowledgeable staff there are rarely disappointed. And for those who don’t know what to ask for? Hosein is hoping they’ll come in to learn.

TRCA reopens paths down to Scarborough shoreline After closing them off because of landslide risks, Toronto and Region Conservation has said it is opening two paths down to Scarboroughâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lake Ontario shoreline. There were more than 70 slides along the Scarborough Bluffs this year, and the TRCA has warned people they risk death or injury by going behind fenced areas on the bluffs, or going to a shoreline road below. The authority does not recognize the shoreline as completely safe during good conditions: this month, it submitted a $170million plan for a trail and park system along the shore east of Bluffers Park. On Aug. 17, though, it announced it is removing barricades around entrances to the Doris McCarthy Trail through the Bellamy Ravine and to a construction road leading

After all, the dining room is similar as are the types of dishes, but Rajan changed the quality of food, ensuring only fresh products, never frozen, are used and the high quality is maintained throughout the menu. He emphasizes his “hygienic clean food,” and “spotless kitchen.” After all those years working in high-end hotels, messiness and uncleanliness will not be tolerated. The family-run restaurant seats 32 and offers take out, delivery and catering. The menu features starters, chicken, lamb, goat, seafood and vegetarian options. Select dishes done in the tandoor oven or a thick curry (every curry is served with rice), freshly baked breads including naan, roti and Lacha Paratha, and desserts, are all made in-house. For drinks, choose from Mango/Salted Lassi ($3) and Masala Chai ($3), wines, liquors, beers and even martinis. The dishes are priced so affordably that you can dine out a couple of times a month: $1.25 for papadums (your first order is complimentary upon arrival) to the most expensive $20.99 for Mixed Grill Platter of chicken tikka, malai kebab, fish tikka, lamb kebab and shrimp, serve with naan. Riders surprised to hear Scarborough RT will disappear MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com They live near a Scarborough Rapid Transit station, and never thought it would disappear. Until now. The Scarborough Transit Action group says it surveyed more than 150 people using the Scarborough RT line Lawrence East Station this month, and 85 per cent were unaware building a one-stop subway extension to Scarborough Town Centre meant the SRT would be torn up. Unlikely as that sounds, given media coverage of Scarborough transit plans since Toronto city council opted for a subway in 2013, people passing an STA demonstration at the station last week supported the story. Lilia Ricafoot said she hadn’t previously heard about the plan, also supported by the province and federal government. "To tell you the truth, this is the first time," said Rica-
foot, who moved to a nearby condominium last fall. "I hope they really know what they are doing." By approving a subway extension to Scarborough Town Centre, council shelved a plan to upgrade the Scarborough RT into a seven-stop light-rail transit line. Councillors voted for subway extension again last year, though a shortened one. Various politicians have declared the debate over. But Shirani Peiris, emerging from the station on her way to see a friend, didn’t know the subway plan meant the end for the SRT. "It’s going to be hard for everybody," she said during the demonstration on Aug. 17. Katarina Ramzi, another passerby who lives in a nearby highrise, said the decision wasn’t fair. The Midland Avenue bus service isn’t reliable, but the SRT is, she said. Build the subway, but leave the other line intact

"We live here because of the station," he said. "All the experts are against the building of the subway, and yet (Mayor) John Tory’s going ahead." The mayor wants a new Smart Track station built at
Lawrence which would take passengers downtown on the GO line, but Liu has heard they will likely need to buy two tickets, he said. (Tory’s office says this isn’t the case.) Vincent Puhakka, a
spokesperson for the group, said people in Scarborough have seen so many transit plans, they may be confused. Preliminary work on the subway has begun. Puhakka insisted advocates of returning to the light-rail plan are gaining followers. Scarborough is "waking up" and seeing the subway extension’s rising costs, which will put other transit projects in jeopardy, he said. Leonie Thelwell, an area resident for 30 years, said she was thinking the decision on the subway wasn’t final, "so the thought of this station being closed never entered my head at all." The subway plan keeps coming up for votes at council, and she still has hope it won’t happen. "As it develops further, the cost will increase more, and it will dawn on them it wasn’t a good decision," she said. The six-station Scarborough RT started operating in 1985, and has experienced increasing mechanical and capacity problems.

P90X creator Tony Horton talks fitness at canfitpro FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com It’s a Friday morning, and the foyer of Metro Toronto Convention Centre is buzzing with anticipation. The crowd slowly makes its way up the escalator and assembles inside an auditorium where fitness guru Tony Horton is set to take the stage to give the keynote address at the 24th annual canfitpro world fitness expo. Wearing a grey collared short-sleeved shirt and black pants, the 59-year-old creator of the uber-popular P90X fitness program walks out to the applause of 5,000 attendees, where he’ll spend the next 40 minutes telling the story of overcoming bullying and a speech impediment to build a fitness empire that includes workouts, books, a T-shirt line, and a hair and skincare line. He’s also working on a new book tiled Food First. In 1980, he moved to Cal-
ifornia with a friend and took work as a stand-up comedian, an errand runner at 20th Century Fox, and a Chippendales go-go dancer while struggling to make ends meet. He joined a gym, and began to train a boss at Fox for $25 a session. That lead to a phone call from Tom Petty, who was heading out on tour and wanted to get into shape. Clients Billy Idol, Annie Lennox and Bruce Springsteen soon followed. Horton was then introduced to Carl Daikeler, chairman and CEO of Beachbody, and recorded the Great Body Guaranteed! workout. Power 90 followed, along with P90X, P90X2, P90X3, 10 Minute Trainer, and Horton’s most recent workout program, 22 Minute Hard Corps. Horton shared his laws for living large with the crowd at canfitpro, a fitness conference and trade show boasting more than 300 nutrition, wellness, and fitness sessions pre-

Trainer is for people who hate exercise. What I’m trying to do is give people options." With less than a year to go before he turns 60, Horton said he values speed, balance and range of motion above all else when it comes to his fitness plan. "In this industry, especially for men, it’s a lot of let’s see how big we can get," he said. "I’m on the 23rd day of this vegan thing, and I’ve lost 10 pounds. I feel better in my own skin; I sleep better. It is weird to look down (at the scale) and see 168 (pounds). I’m more muscular and leaner now, but I can still crank out a bunch of pullups." He trains six days a week (he takes Saturdays off) with a minimum of 40minute sessions broken up into upper, lower, and cardio workouts. It might seem like a brutal schedule, but at the core of it, Horton has just one priority: "to move today".

There’s no rest for this budget chief at city hall DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com It may be true there’s no rest for the wicked. But for budget chiefs in August? Just a little, according to Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford, who’s in charge of cobbling together 2018’s electionyear city budget. "Well, you rest up, but you never get a full couple of weeks off," said Crawford, on his way to a meeting Tuesday, Aug. 22 at his city hall office. Crawford, who is also an accomplished painter, never quite made it to his studio this year as city staff ramp up to putting together the Toronto budget that for 2017 totalled $10.5 billion. Through August, city departments have been working on ways to keep their budget increases to zero something that Crawford doesn’t expect every one will manage to achieve. And on Sept. 5, the day after Labour Day, the first committee meeting of September will be Crawford’s budget committee. But there is a long way to go from September to December, when the bud-

With signs indicating a cooling real estate market through 2017, the city may not be able to rely on the $100 million estimated increases that helped balance the 2017 budget, to do the same thing for the 2018 budget. If that doesn’t happen, the city may have to rely on other measures, including service cuts that are often unpalatable in an election year. But there may be other ways, said Crawford. "There’s been a lot of measures we’ve been doing," he said. "Last year there was over $100 million in savings we’ve found. But we have to be extra careful next year. If every agency found zero per cent, we’d balance. Of course, you’ll see that some divisions won’t be able to achieve that but we have to balance it out." And ultimately, that balance will come later still, on the floor of Toronto Council in 2018.

Mario Giuseppe Ciardullo, 73, owner of Mario and Nat’s Hair Styling, works on cutting Wayne Erison’s hair, inside his Scarborough shop. Ciardullo has been cutting hair in in Highland Creek Village area for 55 years.
Mario Guiseppe Ciardullo’s father said he had two choices, shoemaker or barber. He chose well. Ciardullo has cut hair in Scarborough for more than 50 years, has had a dozen or so customers who never went anywhere else in all that time. He’s cut four generations of hair in some families. "It’s nice when you come and you know every one of them," Ciardullo said last week at Mario and Nat Hairstyling on Old Kingston Road. "’Old school?’ Exactly right." His older brother Nat (Natale) arrived in Canada before him, 1957, but in 1965, the younger Ciardullo opened a barber shop on Bennett Road, and Nat joined him the following year. Ciardullo, sporting a van dyke beard back then, moved himself to Scarborough in 1970. The brothers later moved to the nowvanished Morningside Mall, and after 26 years, moved to their current shop in Highland Creek Village. A couple of years ago, Nat quit. He had problems with his back. "He’s older. I’m kind of fading out too," said Ciardullo, who lives in Ballantrae now and is 73, but hopes to serve his customers another couple of years. "I love to work. I love talking to people," he added in the shop’s back room, some cherries and almonds on the table in front of him. "Nobody comes here in a bad mood, thank God." Customers are looking to talk about sports, and sometimes the tomatoes Ciardullo grows in his garden. He doesn’t like to dis-
cuss politics or religion much. Ciardullo cut Maple Leaf great Dave Keon’s hair. He still cuts Jeff Cole, a Guildwood resident, after 30 years, and now his son, too. People like Ciardullo "made Canada what it is," Cole said. The friendly barber was perhaps 15 when he first cut hair. There was no work in Calabria, Italy, after the Second World War and even lawyers and dentists over there were starving, he recalled. As a youth, he practiced on farmers’ children, glad to learn a trade. His father would get a bag of potatoes instead of money. He joined siblings in Canada in 1962, but disliked his new country’s conservative attitude to fun. At midnight, (they used to) lock it up, like a funeral home," Ciardullo remembered. "I used to sneak out to Montreal to have a good time." At first, he made $30 to $35 a week. "It was not easy." Private barbers are dying out. Franchises, like First Choice, Magic Cuts, and now the $8 clip joints are "killers," Ciardullo said, but the clientele he’s built don’t care about the price. They feel comfortable. On the edge of his mirror is an image of St. Anthony of Padua, who looks after barbers, above pictures of Ciardullo’s three granddaughters, his "three stars." It’s amazing to see a third generation of Ciardullo’s customers come in, said Janice Sheridan, who’s been working with him for the 11 years he’s been in the Highland Creek Village shop. "Some things don’t change," she said.

Simon Cico, whose funeral was on Saturday, Aug. 19, allegedly died at the hands of his father, 58-year-old Zlatan Cico, who then took his own life. The child’s parents were no longer together and Simon lived full time with his mom in ScarborSimon Cico ough, but spent some weekends with his dad. On Aug. 11, family friend Glenn Watson, along with the boy’s mother, who did not wish to be identified, set up online fundraising campaign (www.gofundme.com/
for-our-beautiful-simon). Initially, the goal was to raise $20,000 to cover funeral and burial expenses. So far, upwards of $22,000 has been collected. "It’s amazing the response we got. There’s been lots of support. We weren’t
expecting it," Watson said earlier this week during an interview with The Mirror. He said the boy’s mother would like to see a tree with a plaque planted at her son’s Scarborough school. Watson said she’s also like to use any extra monies collected to set up a fund in Si-
mon’s name for other children in need. "All of this kind of unfolded over the weekend. It’s still in the early stages," said Watson, who will be discussing details with staff at Simon’s school in the next few days. -with files from Torstar News

Ontario Place is accepting submissions for its Winter Light Exhibition, taking place from December 2017 to March 2018. The theme is Winter Light, in hopes to mimic Ontario’s wintery landscape of brisk wind, ice and extreme temperatures. Ontario Place is looking for sculptures that project, shape, transmit, reflect or contain light. Artists from all art forms are allowed to submit new or pre-existing pieces in varying styles and sizes; they are encouraged to explore and combine unconventional materials and methods that respond to light in different ways. The Winter Light Exhibition is part of the new programming animating Ontario Place with art. The final submission deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 5 at midnight. How will high tech change Canada in the next 150 years? HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Flying cars, one global currency, and humanoid robot helpers are just a few ideas tech experts have predicted for Canada’s future in the next 150 years, and Canadians agree. As part of the What’s Now What’s Next campaign launched by Next Canada, a Toronto-based national non-profit agency helping advance Canadian innovation and entrepreneurship, it asked 75 tech experts to predict the evolution of technology in Canada in the future. Tech experts were asked to envision the future in the next 10-25 years, 75-100 years, and in 150 years in varying sectors included education, banking, transportation, retail, and food. Ideas like hospitals being fully automated and artificial intelligence being integrated as part of the ed-
ucation system were some of the suggestions mentioned by experts. The other component of the campaign involved surveying 1,200 Canadians about the predictions to get the pulse of their sentiments on whether or not these were things to be excited about or feared, or whether it could truly become a reality, said Jon French, the director of marketing and communications at Next Canada. "When we put the predictions to them and said ’hey do you think this is plausible?’, for example, one prediction that there would be one global currency in the next 50 years and 53 per cent of Canadians ... said they could believe it - that was surprising," Jon French said. "The arrival of autonomous cars, airplanes, and watercrafts were also mentioned and over half of the Canadians surveyed said that within the next 10

Galactosemia, an inability to break down the sugar galactose found in dairy products and produced by the human body, affects approximately one in 60,000 births in North America. Worldwide, only 25 per cent of galactosemic infants live past two weeks. For galactosemics, exposure to galactose creates a toxic build up in the body that can cause conditions including liver failure, brain damage and death. There is no cure for the metabolic disorder, inherited through carrier genes. Treatment includes dietary management that keeps galactosemics alive, but doesn’t ensure their long-term health. More research is needed to find why some galactosemics develop other related health problems, such as seizures, developmental disabilities or reproductive issues, while others don’t.

TIFF returns with streamlined schedule Festival to feature films by George Clooney, Angelina Jolie A streamlined schedule for the Toronto International Film Festival was released this week as anticipation grows for the 42nd installment of the film festival. The full slate of movies for this year is trimmed down compared to recent years, with 60 fewer titles than last year programmed over 10 days. Still, TIFF, which has gained an international reputation as a bellwether for the Academy Awards - Moonlight debuted in Toronto last year ahead of its Oscar win for Best Picture - will boast a packed schedule of 339 films from 74 countries. Among the offerings are 28 Canadian features. Like in previous years,

The area will return closing off King Street starting Sept. 7 TIFF will feature a heavy contingent of Hollywood celebrities, with Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Idris Elba and Jennifer Lawrence all scheduled to present films. Also returning this year is the closing of King Street
for the TIFF’s first weekend. The street will fully close to traffic between Spadina and University avenues starting 5 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11 when it is converted into a Festival Street. According to or-
ganizers, 120,000 people visited the street last year. As has been the case the TTC will re-route the 504/ 304 King streetcar service, along with 514 Cherry. John Street will also be closed between King and Wellington streets.

In addition to extended patios on King, there will also be food trucks for the first time on Festival Street according to TIFF. Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 4 at various box office locations and at www.tiff.net. Regular screenings will range from $28-35 while premium screenings will run from $52-59. TIFF runs from Sept. 7-17.

City starts new process for parking ticket appeals City Screening Officers can reduce or cancel fines, or give drivers more time to pay them MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The City of Toronto is taking its parking ticket disputes away from courts and starting a new appeals system where tickets can be settled online. "You will be able to submit an online dispute of your penalty, meaning the entire process can be completed without having to leave home," the city has announced. The new Administrative Penalty System will start on Aug. 28, and offer drivers a chance to fight tickets either online, or in
person at Metro Hall or the North York Civic Centre. In either case, a ruling will come not from a judge but a City Screening Officer, who can reduce or cancel fines, or give drivers more time to pay them. If that doesn’t satisfy, there’s a final hearing with an "independent" officer of the Administrative Penalty Tribunal. City officials this week said the new system will be quicker and more convenient than waiting for a time in court. In 2016, the City received 251,482 trial requests for parking tickets, and over the last 10 years, more than 1.8 million parking disputes were processed in court, said Kalli Chapman, prosecution director for the City’s Legal Services Division. "The new dispute process will allow the Parking Enforcement Unit to provide better service delivery, as officers will no longer be tied up in court," said Brian Moniz, the unit’s acting officer-incharge. Moniz said the changes will also give enforcement officers more time to patrol, or respond to calls for service and enforcement. Paying tickets after Aug. 28 can still be done online, by mail or at City service counters at City Hall, Metro Hall or at civic centres in North York, Etobicoke, East York, York and Scarborough.

The 139th Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is back with jaw-dropping shows to live art and everyone’s favourite - the extreme and tasty foods designed for the adventurous. This year, the CNE is commemorating Canada’s 150th with a True North theme throughout the fair’s 18-day run. "We’re featuring Canadian talent this year, with seven stages (on the grounds) hosting that talent," said Virginia Ludy, the CEO of the CNE. The Bandshell Concert Series will have Shawn Hook, Sam Roberts Band, The Sheepdogs and A Tribe Called Red grace the stage this summer. Part of that True North theme is a 30-foot Unity Pole created by Ojibway artist Kris Nahrgang that will take visitors on a spiritual quest for unity from the bottom up. The pole has nine different sections from the bottom up that each symbolize something different. From the turtle at the bottom representing Mother Nature to the six-foot eagle at the very top that symbolizes a messenger that can fly between the spiritual and mutable worlds. The CNE is also bringing back a fair favourite with the revamped Aerial Acrobatics and Ice Skating Show Oh Canada! featuring 22 time gold-medalist Elvis Stojko, who promises some new and difficult tricks are in store for spectators. The show has four acrobats and 12 skaters participating, matching the number of years the ice show has been at the CNE. This is Stokjo’s second time performing as part of the CNE. The show runs twice a day during the week for 30 minutes each. And then, of course, there’s everyone’s favourite part of heading down to Exhibition Place - the food. Mayor John Tory and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne were frequent targets, depicted as transit villains for failing to adequately fund the TTC’s operations along with former Ontario transportation minister Glen Murray and received an "honour" in 2014 from TTCriders members dressed as sardines to highlight the fish-in-a-tin conditions of overcrowded TTC service. During Bell’s tenure, the group linked up with like-minded leftleaning and prolabour groups, organizing pro-
tests and disrupting transit board meetings. With Bell poised to move on from what she calls the best job she’s ever had, the group is now on the search for a replacement, who specializes in fundraising as well as campaigning and outreach to a membership estimated at 10,000. The contract term is for nine months to start but could become a more permanent role depending on how Bell fares in the 2018 election. According to the group, the position will begin in October and candidates should have a minimum of four years’ experience working in a nonprofit, labour union or political party. Regardless of who is eventually chosen to succeed her, Bell promised TTCriders will continue to campaign and advocate for Toronto public transit. "We’re just starting to build our power," she said. The deadline for applications is Friday, Aug. 25.

From spinning wheel demonstrations to pioneer gardening, Ontario’s oldest historical society will offer daily workshops and lectures at the circa-1794 Scadding Cabin from Aug. 18 to Sept. 4. "I’m most excited for the yoga in the garden," Liam Peppiatt, a volunteer director with the York Pioneer and Historical Society, said of this year’s slate of programming at Scadding Cabin. "It’s just a really cool way to expose people to our Pioneer Garden. This year we’ve planted tobacco, sweetgrass, elder flower, lamb’s ear, and something called butterfly bush, which attracts a lot of monarch butterflies. So, it’s going to be a really lovely atmosphere." In addition to the yoga sessions (Aug. 26 and Sept. 1), other Scadding Cabin program highlights include dreamcatcher-making workshops (Aug. 27 and Sept. 4); monarch butterfly tagging with the Toronto Field Naturalists (Aug. 30 and 31); Sharon Temple’s Making a Museum Exhibit (Aug. 24); and Brian MacLean’s Honouring Our Treaties lecture (Aug. 25 and Sept. 4). Known as Toronto’s oldest surviving building, the square-timbered Scadding Cabin is furnished as a pioneer home from the 1830s to early 1840s. Volunteers in period costumes will open its doors, located just west of the CNE bandshell, every day at noon from Aug. 18 to Sept. 4. Visitors are invited to learn about the cabin’s history and peruse the artifacts within including two spinning wheels and a wool winder, and a desk used by John Graves

Eliz Trieu has never been to Mexico. But that will soon change as the Scarborough resident recently won the CNE Air Transat Hot Destinations Contest, which Metroland Media Group sponsored. "I was sitting in my cubicle at work when I got the (congratulatory) email," she said. "I stood up and yelled ’guess what!’" The 29-year-old won a seven day, all-inclusive getaway for two to the Sandos Playacar Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen, a coastal resort town along the Yucatán Peninsula’s Riviera Maya. "I’ve always been a fan of contests," Trieu said. "If you don’t enter, you can’t
win." Her past contest wins include movie passes and a trip to Quebec City last summer, where she saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers perform on her birthday. She plans to take her boyfriend to Mexico, noting the two have never been. "I’m hoping to go early spring," she said. "I want to explore, do some hiking. I haven’t done any research at all yet, but I hope to do some outdoorsy activities." So does Trieu have any advice or words of wisdom when it comes to entering contests? "Everyone should."

After retiring from her job six years ago as a psychometrist, where she was responsible for administering and scoring psychological and neuropsychological tests at The Hospital for Sick Children, the Toronto resident realized her work wasn’t done. So, Shepherd decided to write books geared toward youngsters aged five to 10 which dealt with grown-up and dark topics - Alzheimer’s disease and inappropriate touching. "The books are tools to open up serious discussions," said the mother of three grown kids. The Monster in My Room deals with the emotions a young person might experience after being violated and told not to tell. "I am the voice for those who have not yet found their own," Shepherd writes for the 28-page book’s dedication, which she echoes several times in an interview. In the book, a young girl finds her voice and encourages others in similar situations to do the same. The Monster in My Room is accompanied by a note to parents from social worker Marion Soloway, who notes one in four children will be inappropriately touched by the time they reach 18.

Although her grandmother might not be able to recall her granddaughter’s name, readers are reassured the pair can

still do fun things together, and the older woman’s love for the young girl remains the same. The 26-page book also explains what Alzheimer’s disease is and that it’s not contagious. In the note to parents at the book’s beginning, Dr. Sandra E. Black, who holds the Brill Chair in neurology, department of med-
icine, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto, writes some 48 million people are affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia, with more than nine million in North America alone - and those numbers are expected to double by 2030. "Grandma Doesn’t Know My Name does a wonderful job helping children learn to accept these changes, even if they can’t understand them," she wrote. A photo of Shepherd’s parents, Siggy and Nancy Levy, are featured on the cover. Shepherd and 83-year-old Nancy’s handprints are on the back, with Shepherd’s print shrunk to replicate that of a child. "My mother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease," Shepherd said. "She is an incredible human being. She was born happy and still has a smile. I love and miss her so much. They’re gone, but they’re still here." Both books, which were self-published and available on Amazon.ca, are written in rhyme. "It’s different and kids like it," she said. "When I was young, I loved books that rhymed. I would remember better when I heard it." Shepherd has two other children’s books in the works set for release next year, which deal with the loss of a pet and a young boy struggling with his sexuality. "I know someone is going to be healed through these books," she said. "That’s my only goal."
