When Mark Garner first visited Yonge Street south of Bloor, it was the late 1970s and like many young people of the era, he came from a distance – in his case, all the way in from Scarborough – for the famous street’s sometimes seedy but ir res i st ib le ch a r m s : in those days, rows of video arcades and record stores, movie theatres, music venues, bookstores, and the then-fresh glass cavern of the Eaton Centre. They’ve poured new concrete, but this is the same street.” The street is the same but the buildings around soon will not be. The 80-storey Aura condominium tower at Yonge and Gerrard streets is currently the tallest condominium in the country. In a few years, it will be just the eighth tallest in Toronto, as new towers at Elm Street, Yonge and Gerrard, and Yonge and Bloor take form. And other buildings will occupy what has been useful open space in the neighbourhoods surrounding Yonge Street: the surface parking lots on Bay Street and, more crucially, Church Street to the east. Markham Road set for Tamil Fest Expected to be Scarborough’s largest-ever street festival, the second annual Tamil Fest is set for this weekend on Markham Road, south of Steeles Avenue. The festival runs from this Friday evening through to Sunday. For members of the Greater Toronto Area’s Tamil community, the festival is a chance to celebrate food, entertainment and more. For food vendors, it’s a chance to sell Tamil favourites such as kothu roti, masala dosa, mutton rolls and hoppers to a wider, hungry public. Last year’s inaugural festival in the Morningside Heights area was so popular that organizers, the Canadian Tamil Congress, moved to Markham Road to accomodate larger crowds and offer more parking facilities for those expected to attend from across the GTA and beyond. Tamil Fest will include a midway, merchants and scores of street performers on the road. Also, students of Scarborough’s Aathi Silambam Martial Arts Academy, the only Canadian school for a South Indian martial art banned by British colonizers but passed down through families will be presenting displays. Decision time for voters in Scarborough-Rouge River MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com At a table in Malvern Town Centre’s food court, Edward Molai is explaining why he won’t vote. He lives in a Neilson Road seniors building, he said, and if there’s no polling station there for the Sept. 1 byelection, residents won’t go any distance to reach one. But Molai won’t take part in the vote to replace ex-MPP Bas Balkissoon because politicians aren’t worth his time. “They don’t know anything. They’re only thinking of filling their own pocket,” he said on Tuesday, adding he’ll vote when a party opens up Canada’s “hinterland” to create farms where people can grow crops for export. There’s too many closed shops in the mall, and too much unemployment in the area, said Molai, who’s originally from Guyana. “Fifty people are fighting for one job, and there’s no job.” Scarborough-Rouge River is one of the most ethnically diverse ridings in Canada but its participation rate in elections is one Toronto’s lowest.

Mike Adler?METROLAND

Multiple homes on Sewells Road in the Morningside Heights area and on McLevin Avenue in Malvern display signs for all three major party candidates in the Sept. 1 Scarborough-Rouge River byelection.

A byelection after a summer campaign may be no different: Teams of young canvassers are covering the riding - where residents of some homes appear to simultaneously support the Liberal, Progressive Conservative, and New Democratic candidates - but sign wars don’t translate here into votes. In the 2014 provincial election, only 47.5 per cent of the riding’s

88,600 electors cast a ballot. There was even less interest in 2011, when turnout was about 42.9 per cent. Malvern Votes, a group which worked for years to increase residents’ interest in politics, has lost its funding. At the next food court table Debbie Dunlop said she’s supporting Raymond Cho, a longtime local councillor running for the PCs.

Dunlop is on disability, a provincial system she said gives her $490 a month for rent and makes her feel like a number; for eight years, she’s been on the waiting list for subsidized housing she suspects she’ll never receive. “I’ve lived in the shelters. They’re not equipped for people,” she added. Dunlop knows party loyalty in the northeast Scarborough riding runs deep: her mom’s sticking with the Liberals, but her dad’s voting for Cho, because he knows him. Dunlop said Liberal candidate Piragal Thiru shook her hand in a McDonald’s last week, but “I don’t know what he stands for. At least Raymond’s been around.” Sijid Dinat, carrying bags of goods out of the mall says the area needs a subway, and he’s leaning towards the Liberals, “because they are working with (Toronto Mayor) John Tory on the subway plan.” Yes, Cho’s been a councillor for 25 years, “but I don’t see much being done in 25 years,” said Dinat, who regards the NDP candidate Shan - who has stood in several local elections - as someone who “runs for everything out there.”

Not far away, though, Ray Dunavon, said he’s thinking of voting NDP. Shan “actually lives in the area,” he said, while other candidates do not. Dunavon also wants a light-rail line built to the area. Why spend billions on a one-stop subway, he asked, “when you could put in an LRT and move people quickly?” He also suggested the Liberals lacked “transparency” because when Balkissoon quit his post in March there was no explanation, and the party should have had one. Dunlop and Dinat thought crime was a key issue in the riding, and in a plaza parking lot on McNicoll Avenue, a man named Andrew said security was more important to him than any subway-or-light-rail debate. “The reason is it has given us a pretty bad name a few years ago,” said the man, who added he was undecided but wouldn’t give a last name. One woman said she was a riding voter, though she realized there was a byelection only once signs appeared. “I actually haven’t been keeping up with it, to be honest,” she said.

City protection sought for Scarborough’s Vimy Oaks MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough heritage experts will seek support at Toronto City Hall this week for protecting trees linked to one of Canada’s most important battles. Vimy Oaks surviving along Kennedy Road in Agincourt were brought back from the Vimy Ridge battlefield in France by a soldier who fought there. Returned from the First World War, Leslie Miller planted acorns from a fallen European oak on a property once called the Vimy Oaks Farm. Part of that land is now a “bush lot” owned by the Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church north of McNicoll Avenue, and the Scarborough

Community Preservation Panel wants the area designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Panelists will ask the Toronto Preservation Board today to support the move, and to call “for appropriate comment and action” at Scarborough Community Council. Bush lot designation “Designation of a bush lot is not unique as Scarborough has already designated several black walnut trees of the site of the famous Falcon Inn,” Rick Schofield, SCPP chairperson, said in a letter to the board. (Schofield also helped to preserve trees on the Kingston Road site during development in the 1990s.)

A spokesperson for the church could not be reached for comment this week, but in a letter to the board the SCBC said it objects to the designation process - which it charges was started by Schofield without notifying the church - “until full consultation is done.” “We are gravely concerned about this heavy handed draconian approach of designating a property unilaterally,” added the letter signed by Vincent Ching, the church’s board chairperson. The costly victory by Canadians at Vimy Ridge in 1917 is thought to be a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. Volunteers of the Vimy Oaks Project are working with The Vimy Foundation to plant 100 saplings produced from the trees

in Scarborough on the battlefield during commemorations next year. Part of history Jim Karygiannis, the local councillor, said the trees are unique. “We have part of Vimy in Canada,” he added this week. Karygiannis said he’s working with everyone involved in the issue to preserve the trees in north Agincourt and to stage a celebration that wilcentre around them next April to mark the 100th anniversary of the battle. Opponents of the nearby McNicoll Bus Garage thought that project might harm Vimy Oaks on the site, but only one was found, and the TTC pledged to protect it, he said.

Smart use of space needed downtown as population grows

here’s no question: condo and office construction in Toronto, particularly in downtown Toronto, is booming. By 2025 the city core will have half a million people living in it, many of them in new and relatively new condominium towers. During workdays, the population swells to more than 830,000. Population density like that is good in many ways: it makes it easier and more cost-effective to provide transit and other fundamental infrastructure, and it limits the environmental damage that sprawl inevitably brings about. But can there be too much of that good thing? In downtown Toronto – maybe. For every condominium tower that climbs high for new residents, the ad hoc ground-level space existing visitors and resiOUR VIEW for dents that’s existed for years gets TOcore to look buried. Taking a look at those spaces – the at maintaining unsightly paid surface parking lots up and down Church public spaces Street, for example – it’s easy to say good riddance. But as reported by Metroland Media Toronto’s David Nickle this week, saying good riddance to some surface parking could mean farewell to the vibrant festivals and activities that have come to define downtown living: the annual Pride festival on Church and Yonge streets, North By Northeast, BuskerFest all rely on space both on and off the road for parades and performances and gatherings. Something’s got to give, and lucky thing: city planners, downtown businesses and the area’s political leadership seem to know it. Toronto’s Planning Department has embarked on TOcore, a project to look at ways to maintain public space amid the high-rise development. And the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area along with local councillor Krystin Wong-Tam has been promoting a more specific solution to Yonge Street: giving some portion of the roadway over to pedestrians and cyclists. An environmental assessment of the plan is underway. We’ll see what fruit it bears. A few years ago, kicking the cars off Yonge Street would have been a kind of municipal sacrilege. Now, it’s just an example of the kind of forward thinking needed, to make sure that downtown Toronto stays special.

Federal funding for TTC is the exception, not the norm If you’re one of the unfortunate souls who’s been regularly riding Line 2 of the subway through the heat of this summer, you’ve learned some tricks. Before you get onto a subway car, put your hand through the door and see if it ignites. If it does, the air conditioning is off and you might be better trying the next car. If that one’s overheated too, you make your way to one end of the car or another, and conserve your strength until it reaches the next station, and try and move to a third car before the doors close again… and then repeat this until you find a car with air conditioning, or get to the last or first car on the train – which usually has air conditioning. In any case, it’s wise to hydrate. Because even if you eventually get in the right car, on weekends and off-peak you might find yourself waiting in the tomb-like heat of a station or during rush-hour, staring through suffocating crowds

as over-stuffed trains – many more of which are not air conditioned – pass by. Hot subways and crowded platforms aren’t the only problems that the Toronto Transit Commission is facing, but they are symptoms of the same problem: chronic under-funding, dating back decades, which has required commission staff to juggle priorities and in so doing deliver a service that at times barely approximates the reasonable expectations of its customers. And so it is that subway air conditioning during heat waves is managed rather than repaired, as the TTC’s backlog of repairs grows. There was a bit of kismet this week when the August heatwave broke for a couple of days, and the federal government came to Toronto

to announce the “down payment” of $840 million in funding for public transit infrastructure in Toronto. The down payment is substantial – $500 million, ear-marked for among other things subway repairs and bus repairs – which hopefully will include some of those AC units – but many other projects too: bike parking at TTC stations, new buses, escalator overhauls and more. The challenge will be to ensure that it keeps going, and that will be a trick. This federal money is atypical for more than its magnitude: it is not, as TTC Chair Josh Colle remarked, the kind of funding that visiting federal officials like to announce. No one wants to cut a ribbon on a repair job, after all, and that’s what these things entail. Really, a well-financed transit system shouldn’t need $500 million in one-time funding to bring its aging but not ancient infrastructure up to scratch; there should be a

consistent and sustainable funding source that allows ongoing maintenance and at least modest expansion. It doesn’t seem as though such a source is on the horizon. This fall and next year, the TTC will be responding to instructions from Mayor John Tory to cut $15.9 million or 2.6 per cent from its operating budget. That will be an annual reduction, and it is dramatic enough that TTC CEO Andy Byford reported earlier this summer that if implemented he would have no choice but to recommend service cuts. Given that long-term reality, one wonders how much longer it will be before another federal government has to open up the treasury to bring the system back to where it should have been all along. Better hang on to those water bottles.

Toronto Zoo celebrates birth of rare Grevy’s zebra TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com

Public welcome Zoo visitors can get a glimpse of the filly daily between 9 a.m. and noon. Viewing times are weather permitting and subject to change. While there, visitors can also check out the zoo’s giant panda, white lion, polar bear and Indian rhino babies. Visit www.torontozoo.com for more information about the Toronto Zoo, which is at 2000 Meadowvale Rd, north of Hwy. 401. Visit www.bit.ly/2bcTqWt to watch the Grevy’s zebra filly explore her outdoor habitat for the first time, and meet a new friend, in a video from the Toronto Zoo filmed Aug. 18. Panda Cam now at zoo wGiant

People around the world can hang out daily with the Toronto Zoo’s

giant pandas without leaving home, thanks to the new TELUS Giant Panda Cam. The Giant Panda Cam made its debut last week at the Toronto Zoo. It streams a live, high-definition feed of giant panda Er Shun and her cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily. Pre-recorded footage of the giant pandas can be viewed 24/7. “We are proud to partner with TELUS, a national leader in telecommunications and service, who demonstrates social responsibility through environmental stewardship programs and interest in preserving wildlife,” John Tracogna, Toronto Zoo CEO, said in a press release. “With the successful births of the first giant panda cubs born in Canada last year, we are grateful to TELUS for providing this opportunity for people to watch these cubs grow during their limited time in Toronto. We hope this will instill the desire in all viewers to learn more about saving this flagship species.” Please visit www.torontozoo.com/ pandacam to keep up with the giant pandas and some of their many activities.

The Toronto Zoo celebrated the birth of a rare Grevy’s zebra last week in Scarborough.

The Toronto Zoo baby boom continues with the birth of a Grevy’s zebra. The zoo announced Thursday, Aug. 18, that mom Tori gave birth to the female foal Tuesday, July 26. “The birth of Tori’s filly is a great opportunity to spread the word on the plight of Grevy’s zebras in the wild,” Maria Franke, Toronto Zoo curator of mammals, said in a statement announcing the birth. “As one of the zoo’s key mandates is to educate visitors on current conservation issues and help preserve biodiversity, this filly helps highlight the importance of zebra conservation and what is being done to preserve this magnificent species in Africa,” added Franke. “The Toronto Zoo supports Grevy’s zebra conservation efforts in Ethiopia and Kenya through the Toronto Zoo Endangered Species Reserve Fund.” Mom and baby are doing well. The filly started walking 10 minutes after she was born, and her keepers report she is already displaying a strong and confident

personality. Grevy’s zebras are endangered, with approximately 2,000 left in the wild. The largest living member of the horse family, Grevy’s zebras have larger ears and narrower stripes than other zebras.

special report

DID YOU KNOW? Toron to’s dow n tow n i s growing at a phenomenal rate: In 2011, downtown Toronto had a population of 199,495. In 2015, city planners estimate that more than 240,000 live here. In 2025, that’s expected to double. Much of that development will come to live in new residential developments. In June 2015, 31,554 housing units had been submitted to the city in the form of planning applications. Another 28,812 had applied for or received building permits, and 16,321 were under construction.

Benjamin Priebe/Metroland

When you add people coming in for employment, downtown Toronto swells during the day to more than 830,000 people.

A view from the Bathurst Street bridge, illustrating the future location of Toronto’s proposed Rail Deck Park.

Rapidly redeveloping a city’s character >>>from page 1

by Northeast. “With this type of intensification, with parking lots disappearing for programming, how do we build a quality neighbourhood?” says Garner. “This was always the high street, the retail street. It’s been a music Mecca not just for retail but also performance. And we’re about to redevelop the street. What’s the character of the street to be? We all had a rite of passage on Yonge Street. The street we need to build now is for the future generations.” Toronto planners are seized of this question, not just for Yonge Street but for all of the downtown. With a huge growth in population, and unprecedented redevelopment of scarce downtown land, how does the city provide the public spaces that have in the past existed temporarily or in an ad hoc way? Earlier in August, Toronto Mayor John Tory announced a plan to spend what could be hundreds of millions of dollars to cover over rail lands south of Wellington Street, to turn it into a 21-acre “central park.” The plan is informed by an ongoing city planning project, TOcore, looking at comprehensive ways to “finish off” Toronto’s

downtown redevelopment that allows the much larger downtown to retain the charms and amenities that made it such a desirable place in the first place. “We’re finishing off the downtown and as we finish it off we need to make sure we don’t kill the golden goose by losing our open spaces and green spaces,” says Toronto’s Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat.

With this type of intensification, with parking lots disappearing for programming, how do we build a quality neighbourhood? – Mark Garner, downtown Yonge BIa executive director

That inevitably means investment – either in real estate, or in repurposing the public realm. In the case of the rail-cover park plan, that means spending as much as $20 million an acre on decking and landscaping overtop of train tracks. That might seem like a lot, but Keesmaat points out that purchasing land in the downtown core would cost the city between $50

and $60 million an acre. There is no rail corridor to build over on Yonge Street. There is, however, the street itself. And it’s here that city planners, the Downtown Yonge BIA and local Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn WongTam are looking for relief. “The grand vision is to redesign and repurpose Yonge Street from Davenport to the waterfront, and rebuild the street so it’s much more dynamic… people friendly… pedestrian friendly,” says Wong-Tam. “If I gave you a street designed to be able to be turned over to festivals, with wayfinding and stages built into the street itself, would that not have value for a neighbourhood? Would that not have value with people?” Earlier this year, Wong-Tam and the BIA launched an environmental assessment to look at the possibility of turning sections of Yonge Street – or possibly the whole stretch – over to pedestrian malls, or at least widening the sidewalks. Garner admits that he has gotten flack from some in his organization who chaffe at the idea of shutting down a stretch of downtown roadways to cars. But he says his membership – and the data – bear this out.

The BIA has done traffic counts, and found that out of 42 million people travelling on the street, only a quarter do so by car, and just five per cent by bicycle. The rest are pedestrians. Keesmaat says that studies on other downtown streets suggest that cars should have even less primacy. On King Street, cars take up 64 per cent of the space but move only 16 per cent of the people. “Right now there’s a profound efficiency if we can shift infrastructure so that the infrastructure that moves the most people has the most allocation,” says Keesmaat. Spadina-Fort York MP and former city councillor Adam Vaughan says plans like the Yonge Street plan will be essential to making downtown communities work in the future. “One of the things we realized is that we’re losing flat space to intensification and flat space is where people gather,” he says. “I think we sell ourselves short when we think of Toronto as culturally deficient – it’s one of the most vibrant places in North America. But if you don’t pay attention to it – don’t think about new ways to use residual lands – you’ll lose that advantage very quickly.”

There will be food and drinks available as well. Share photos from the event, or follow along online, using the hashtag #AiPHarrison on social media. View TDSB’s school repair backlog list on website The Toronto District School Board has posted a list online of the 23,232 repairs needed at its 588 active schools. Through the TDSB website, parents can see the repair backlog and condition rating of each active school operated by the provincially funded board. It is believed to be the first time an Ontario school board has shared such data.“The information confirms that TDSB school repairs have historically been underfunded by the prov-

ince, requiring the board to focus primarily on emergency repairs,” reads a TDSB statement, released Monday announcing the disclosure. The TDSB statement said the data was posted online as part of the board’s commitment to transparency. None of the repairs listed pose health or safety risks for students or staff, notes the statement, but approximately 200 TDSB schools are in critical need of work. Visit bit.ly/2bcgP9u for the list.

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background.

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

Hair cells in the ear move very rapidly and can act as an amplifier or dampener. If these cells are damaged, they can no longer properly amplify speech and dampen loud noises. amplified in the ear and loud sounds no longer dampened. This leads to more difficulty in hearing what is said in a lot of situations. If the hair cells have been damaged by noise or blood circulation problems, hearing aids that amplify quiet speech and dampen loud ambient noise can be a good solution for most people.

Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.

Connect Hearing is currently looking to improve hearing for people who experience these challenges and want to try this new technology. We are particularly interested in candidates who have trouble hearing speech in the situations discussed above and can benefit from a trial to see whether they notice an improvement. Interested people can register for a free hearing evaluation and a no-obligation trial of the Audéo V hearing aids by calling 1.888.408.7377.

Praising our festival organizers Local entrepreneurs selling Asian classics and hybrid creations like Peking duck poutine, sushi burritos, Cambodian beef skewers, barbecue squid, pork belly bao, and purple yam (“ube”) ice cream sandwiches – on the enor mous lawn of Scarborough’s Chinese Cultural Centre at the fifth annual TO Food Fest. Award-winning calypso artist King Cosmos encouraging a handful of people before him to stand up and dance at our fledgling Scarborough Community Multicultural Festival. Crowds lining up for that sweet indulgence of a full rack of BBQ ribs at Thomson Memorial Park’s yearly Rotary Ribfest. Carnival rides, tribute bands, the Sultans of String, magicians, and vendors offering everything from Middle Eastern to Caribbean food and beyond at the popular street fair Taste of Lawrence. “Others have festivals; we have tumbleweed,” Scarborough city councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker told the Toronto Star recently. Clearly, terribly false. He has been famously advocating for our residents

helen stratigos gems of scarborough

through the decades – but on the issue of our community extravaganzas, he is asleep. Scarborough hosts an overwhelming number of free festivals. Along with those mentioned above, we had the first Scarborough Food Truck Festival, Junior Carnival Parade and Family Day in Malvern, Kothufest, Scarborough Arts Bridging Fe s t i v a l , S c a r b o r o u g h Worldwide Film Festival, Birkdale Art in the Park, Canadian Multiculturalism Day, Tamil Fest, Muslim Festival, Scarborough AfroCaribbean Festival, and more. That “tumbleweed” is entangled with rolling stones and is growing joyously loud. Bringing our communities together is a noble purpose. “Pride and ownership” is what the new multicultural bash hoped to stir in Scarborough. “We can connect with each other” Mayor John Tory wrote in an open message. Some festivals benefit important causes – the Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough and Second Harvest among

them. Others celebrate new Canadians by including their citizenship ceremony. The spectrum of exuberance – and media coverage – however, slides from reliably successful summer traditions, to all-out “must reach” public parties, to sparsely attended, faltering events. For struggling up-andcoming festivals, my advice: Consider “springboarding” from established institutions like the school boards or a mix of non-profit groups. Entice spontaneous festivalgoers with massive banners displayed at busy intersections near the event. Partner with neighbourhood malls, houses of worship, Parks and Recreation, and the TTC to help spread the message. Community spirit can be conjured in our practical, conservative-ish Scarborough – but it’s not a guarantee. I praise and support the volunteers and organizers who are striving to create it. You should too, Councillor De Baeremaeker.

Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence program now accepting applications TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com The call has been issued for artists for the 2017 Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence program. Ap p l i c a t i o n s w i l l b e accepted until Friday, Sept. 30. Residencies are open to professional artists throughout Canada, including writers, visual artists, musicians and more. Artists can apply

to spend one-to-six months at Fool’s Paradise, McCarthy’s picturesque property atop the Scarborough Bluffs. The residency program was established by the Ontario Heritage Trust, at the request of the renowned Canadian painter, who died in 2010 at 100 years old. “This property is very much an expression of McCarthy’s creativity and her character,” said Beth Hanna, Ontario Heritage Trust CEO,

at an event celebrating the program’s inaugural year in 2015. “Doris wanted to provide other artists with a place of retreat, the opportunity to live and work at the site that had been such a source of inspiration for her art.” Please visit www.heritagetrust.on.ca/dmair for an application form and more information about the Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence program.

Input on licensing rental apartments sought The City of Toronto is asking for public input as it considers creating a licensing framework for rental apartment buildings. The framework would aim to promote best practices for building maintenance, strengthen enforcement of property standards violations,

and improve tenant engagement and access to information, building on the current Multi-Residential Apartment Building Audit Program. Public meetings to allow people to weigh in are set for: • Thursday, Aug. 25, 6:30 to

8:30 p.m., at East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave. • Tuesday, Aug. 30, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Domenico Di Luca Community Recreation Centre, 25 Stanley Rd. • Wednesday, Aug. 31, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Scarborough Village Recreation Centre, 3600 Kingston Rd.

Top trends in wood finishing Revitalize the look of your home with on-trend updated interior wood surfaces. Applying a fresh wood finish to furniture, wood cabinets, and wood accessories is a simple DIY project that can modernize your old furniture or a great garage sale or antique store sale find. It’s also an easy way to quickly change a room’s style from contemporary to vintage or vice versa. Try one of these top trends as an alternative to an expensive renovation. 1. Crisp white: This Scandinavian-inspired look is perfect for a simple and polished appearance.

White-washed wood surfaces bring an understated elegance to any room, working to reflect any natural light and opening up the space. Use Minwax’s White-Wash Pickling Stain for a subtle hue that’ll let the wood’s natural grain show through. 2. Weathered grey: Grey-washed wood creates a rustic-chic look reminiscent of the country, the beach, and natural charm — think driftwood, barn boards, and weathered beach docks. But you don’t necessarily need older wood pieces to create this lived-in look. Choose a classic grey for

a worn, beachy effect. 3. Bold black: Darkly-stained wood creates a crisp, modern look with timeless appeal. Try Minwax wood finish in ebony to achieve a rich hue. To darken the colour even more, apply multiple coats being sure to let them air dry between each application. Create contrast in your space with lighter, neutral shades on the walls and surrounding décor. Tip: Remember that stains can alter the colour of your wood surfaces, but don’t provide the necessary protection to preserve your projects. For best

results, it’s important to sand your projects first and finish them off with a protective clear coating once the stain has completely dried.

Celebrating a punk rock icon KELSEY CHENG kcheng@insidetoronto.com It’s not only an event to remember punk rock legend Joe Strummer, but also an opportunity to create empowerment through music. Organized by the Joe Strummer Foundation in the U.K., StrummerJam is a global fundraising project that aims to celebrate Joe Strummer, at the same time hoping to give aspiring musicians an opportunity to showcase their talents and to raise funds for music-related charities. This is the first year of StrummerJam and over 32 events across six countries are being held in August to celebrate his legacy and to raise funds. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support and positivity from bands, venues and promoters,” media coordinator of the foundation Steve Mullen said. “As Joe once said, ‘Without people, you’re nothing.’ – how true is that?”

John Graham known by his Mellor, stage name Joe Strummer, was the lead vocalist of punk rock band The Clash, which was one of the most prominent bands in the wave of British punk music during the late 1970s and 1980s. The Clash’s hard-hitting political lyrics, paired with Strummer’s rasping voice, resonated with fans across the U.K., and had a profound effect on the alternative rock scene. Strummer then proceeded onto a solo career and developed other interests such as

acting, radio broadcasting and writing scores for films. In 1999, he started a backing band The Mescaleros. Strummer died of a congenital heart defect in December 2002 at the age of 50. The Joe Strummer Foundation was set up by his friends and family in 2003, and has been active in promoting art and music education in different countries, including establishing a recording studio for local musicians in Free Town, Sierra Leone and building a music room in Tilinanu Orphanage in Malawi. This year’s StrummerJam in Toronto will begin on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Linsmore Tavern. The music event will feature local singer-songwriter T.C. Folkpunk, Toronto-based band Bad Raven Lucy, Guelph-based punk cover band C.I.D. and indie punk group Copper Crown. For more information visit http:// www.strummerfest.ca

“Rajan (Raj) Khatri was born in Indian but grew up in Nepal learning to cook a variety of cuisines, inspired by his mother. “Japanese, Thai, Chinese, anything and everything,” he says. That wide base of knowledge led Khatri into the hotel industry where he worked at Le Royal Meridien Phuket Yatch Club as the Indian Chef in 2006. According to Khatri, he was the first person to introduce Indian food to the hotel. It is here that he met his beautiful wife Joy in 2006 – she was working in the front office while he was cooking up a storm in the kitchen. They spent almost two years at Le Royal Meridian Phuket Yatch Club, with Rajan cooking for 400 guests, or more, a night. Shortly after followed the Sheraton Hua Hin Beach Resort with 250 rooms, where he became the “Our promise is to serve acting supervisor chef de partie for two years, and then the Hilton in Bangkok, where he was sous chef. Rajan then opened his first restaurant, Real Tandoor in Bangkok. He has since sold it. you an authentic IndianComing to Toronto in 2011 he landed a job as the chef at Vindaloo on Kingston Road. After some time, the owner wanted to cuisine experience” - Raj move and proposed Rajan buy the place. Rajan said yes. That was over a year ago. His first Indian restaurant in Canada might appear the same from the original Vindaloo. After all, the dining room is similar as are the types of dishes, but Rajan changed the quality of food, ensuring only fresh products, never frozen, are used and the high quality is maintained throughout the menu. He emphasizes his “hygienic clean food,” and “spotless kitchen.” After all those years working in high-end hotels, messiness and uncleanliness will not be tolerated. The family-run restaurant seats 32 and offers take out, delivery and catering. The menu features starters, chicken, lamb, goat, seafood and vegetarian options. Select dishes done in the tandoor oven or a thick curry (every curry is served with rice), freshly baked breads including naan, roti and Lacha Paratha, and desserts, are all made in-house. For drinks, choose from Mango/Salted Lassi ($3) and Masala Chai ($3), wines, liquors, beers and even martinis. The dishes are priced so affordably that you can dine out a couple of times a month: $1.25 for papadums (your first order is complimentary upon arrival) to the most expensive $20.99 for Mixed Grill Platter of chicken tikka, malai kebab, fish tikka, lamb kebab and shrimp, serve with naan. Vindaloo is open six days a week, closed Mondays. Check out Vindaloo’s Facebook page for more photos.

Province announces funding to help seniors age with ‘dignity’ CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Dr. Eric Hoskins was in Toronto recently to announce a $10-million funding increase to assist seniors with challenging and complex behaviours associated with dementia and other mental health issues. “Seniors today are living longer and are enjoying better health than ever before, and we want to help them live where they want to be – and that’s in their homes for as long as possible,” the Minister of Health and Long Term Care told residents and staff of Eatonville Care Centre during his announcement Thursday, Aug. 18. “But we also know there are challenges that come with aging that sometimes prevent that from happening. So it’s important that our system helps seniors grow old with dignity, no matter where they call home. “To help us do that, we have to make the right investments, which is why I’m pleased to announce today that our government is increasing funding to Behavioural Supports Ontario by an additional $10 million.” Launched in 2011, the Behavioural Supports Ontario

this program is it finds a way to break through those barriers. Special teams assess individual resident care plans and talk with their families to connect with the person behind the disease or illness and to improve their quality of life.” Living Longer

Cynthia Reason/METROLAND

Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, speaks at Eatonville Care Centre in Etobicoke to announce a $10-million funding increase to Behavioural Supports Ontario.

(BSO) initiative was created to enhance health care services for older adults living both at home and in long-term care residences. Through the BSO program, specialized teams improve the quality of life for people with chronic mental health conditions and their caregivers by identifying triggers that can lead to agitation or aggressive behaviours before

they start. The $10 million BSO funding boost will allow facilities like Eatonville to hire and train staff on how to recognize certain behaviours – such as aggression or wandering – amongst their residents with dementia, Hoskins said, noting that BSO methods have helped cut down the use of anti-psychotic drugs amongst such residents, as

well as reduced the incidence of injury to their caregivers. “Dementia is a cruel condition, robbing individuals of the things that make them who they are. It takes away their memories and their experiences and their ability to understand and communicate with the people that love and care for them,” he said. “What’s remarkable about

According to Candace Chartier, CEO of the Ontario Long Term Care Association, seniors entering long-term care today are much more medically complex than they were even five years ago. “The reality is that our seniors are getting older, they’re living longer, and as a result they need more care when they arrive at long-term care homes,” she said, noting 97 per cent of the residents currently living in Ontario’s long-term care homes have two or more diseases, and more than 60 per cent of them have Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia. “These challenges are within our sector and they’re not going away. That is why this investment today is so integral to the seniors that we care for in Ontario,” Chartier said of the $10-million funding increase to BSO.

“We would love to see every long-term care home in the province having a dedicated team focused on dementia, responsible for working so closely with those residents that need that extra help.” Hoskins also announced that Ontario is also increasing funding for residents of long-term care homes by up to $60 million to better support resident care needs this year. That investment is estimated to result in a two per cent increase for nursing and personal care allocations, and for program and support services, including physiotherapy and convalescent care. And that, said Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker, is especially good news for his constituency – one that boasts one of the highest percentages of senior residents per capita in the country. “In Etobicoke Centre I am proud to represent many seniors, and high-quality health care is a top priority in my community,” he said. “That is why investments, like this one, in staff to care for seniors and others in our community, as well as to support their families, are so important.”

SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID! A new hearing aid offer has been introduced for retirees. The hearing aid is a great value, simple to operate and brings IMPROVED hearing to thousands!

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce the

strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with causing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

Dog that walked into police station reunited with owner A dog that wandered into Scarborough’s 43 Division police station last Thursday morning has been reunited with his owner. Police said two officers starting their day shift around 7 a.m. opened the door to the station “and the dog came right in.” Const. Randall Arsenault said the husky mix was playful and “very friendly” and understood commands. The officer turned to social media in an effort to find the dog’s owner. The canine enjoyed several hours with 43 Division staff, including helping staff the front desk, before his owner arrived. terrier euthanized after attack on poodle ◗Bull
