New Year’s The final cut Eve events slated for Scarborough Scarborough’s official New Year’s Eve celebration offers a lot of activities for families looking to celebrate. The complimentary Dec. 31 countdown event includes party hats, clowns, arts and crafts, balloons, face painting, live music and children’s movies, a reptile display - even free parking. Celebrations to ring in 2013 run from 7 p.m. to midnight in the Scarborough Civic Centre Rotunda on Borough Drive, near the Scarborough Centre RT Station. Dan the Music Man, Sol de Cuba, TC3, Moo’d Swing and Two or the Show are all set to perform and feature films Madagascar 3 and Ice Age 4 - Continental Drift will be shown. There will also be public skating, weather permitting, on the Albert Campbell Square outdoor rink. Scarborough’s city councillors also chose to continue the tradition of a New Year’s Levee at the Civic Centre - a chance for everyone to meet municipal politicians and have a hot chocolate - on Sunday, Jan. 6. The levee is from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and will be followed from 3 to 5 p.m. by a Sunday Serenade concert by the Good Times Orchestra.

Residents can still register for annual Rouge Park bird count MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Nature-lovers still have time to sign up for the 10th annual Winter Bird Count in Rouge Park next month.

The 24-hour count around branches of the Rouge River in Markham and Scarborough on Sunday, Jan. 13, will help uncover changes and bird populations and insight into the watershed’s ecologi-

cal health. “Some things are hard to analyze, some are a little easier,” said Sheryl Santos, the park’s stewardship coordinator. Those who brave the cold in

their assigned areas may spot wild turkeys, frequently seen in the park, especially north of Steeles Avenue. Santos said 32 members of the species - lately seen wandering

streets in Scarborough Village and Cliffcrest - were counted in 2011 (some may have been counted twice) and 15 were recorded in the 2012 count. >>>COUNTS, page 7

Poor time to force province’s hand To the editor: Re: ‘Teachers need to be appreciated for their work,’ Letters, Dec. 7. We all know the importance of the teaching profession to our children and to the development of our society. The points made the letter writer are quite valid. Yes, teachers deserve to be well paid, but not overpaid. Teachers deserve to have the same quality of benefits, as do all public servants, as the private sector; but no more than that. Teachers are salaried employees and as such, the extra hours grading, assessing, preparing and upgrading has already been taken into account when they instruct their representatives (the union) to negotiate their remuneration, just as within the private sector. However, unlike the private sector, where the majority of professionals are not unionized, teachers enjoy a special

status. They currently have a monopoly within their profession and despite calling their bargaining sessions “negotiated agreements”, they essentially hold school boards, the provincial government and students hostage every time their contract comes up for renewal. To avoid confrontation, work stoppages and harm to the students, the boards and/ or the province caves in to the unions expensive demands. The province, the boards and the taxpayers can no longer afford to pay for benefits and costs they themselves can never expect to enjoy. Teachers’ pensions need to be reformed. Sick day allowances need to be reformed. Pay levels and tenure need to be reformed. The costs are unsustainable. And to address the letterwriter’s concern that if what is happening through Bill 115 now were to happen in the private sector, that blood

would boil. It already is happening everyday, within every industry, in Canada and the United States within large multi-nationals, mediumsized corporations and small local companies. The current most popular ruse is new letters of employment, changing an existing job title or description. To remain employed at your firm, whether there eight months or 20 years, you have to sign the new employment letter. If you fail to sign, you are considered to have “voluntarily quit” the firm. If you do sign the new employment letter, you will have agreed to accept the provincial minimums under employment standards for pay in lieu of notice and severance, no matter your previous “common law” entitlement. In the private sector, it is called, “simply part of the business”. In the public sector it is called a Charter violation. Clifford J. Layne

To the editor: In light of the situation concerning teacher’s basic rights, I felt it appropriate to write from the often forgotten perspective of a student. This year, we learned about children’s rights. I was surprised at all the different rights children have because, most of the time, we are the ones who are being ignored and neglected. I understand many of my teachers do not agree with Bill 115. Even though teachers may consider giving up extra-curricular activities as a good strategy, it is not fair to the students who have to suffer. I do not think it is fair for students in elementary, middle or secondary schools to have to go to school and only focus on academics. For many students, extracurricular activities help them balance their schoolwork, issues that may be going on at school or at home and take a break. With a lack of these activities, parents might have to enrol their kids in out-ofschool clubs. Did you know that school clubs can also affect a child’s academic progress? Studies show students who are enrolled in clubs initially do better in school than children who are not enrolled. Universities do not only look at grades, but also look for a well-rounded person who is involved in extracurricular activities. If you were a high school student applying to university during this pause, your overall image might not look as appealing to the university as you might have hoped. Another reason Bill 115 is not fair to students is because it limits their social circles. It is easy to make friends and be social in extra-curricular clubs. There are many disadvantages associated with the teacher’s fight for Bill 115. I am hoping that this pause comes to an end and students no longer need to go to a school without any extra-curricular activities. Mariyam F. Khaja

Zoo hosts Boxing Day treats walk, New Year’s countdown RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com This holiday season, the Toronto Zoo is inviting all residents to join in the festivities. While the zoo is closed Christmas Day, it re-opens on Dec. 26 with its annual Boxing Day Christmas Treats Trek, where animals are fed special treats. This year, renovations in the Eurasia pavil-

ion, where two giant pandas on loan from China are to be housed, will provide a surprise “twist” to the annual event, which is in its 37th year. Attendees will also receive a Littlest Pet Shop gift courtesy toy manufacturer Hasbro and admission is half-price all day on Dec. 26. Zoo-goers are asked to bring a non-perishable item to donate to the food bank. On New Year’s Eve, the zoo will host from 5

to 8 p.m. a family countdown to 2013. The annual event, in its 10th year, will feature animal visits and zookeeper talks and a full line-up of family-friendly entertainment including a 1960s cover band, an appearance by Po from the hit film franchise Kung Fu Panda, the Majinx Magic Show team and the WotWots children’s television characters. Tickets for the outdoor event are $20 for adults and seniors and $12 for children between the ages of four and 12. Children under three are admitted for free but must

have a ticket. The zoo is also inviting patrons to sign up for its White Lion holiday special, part of its ongoing Adopt and Animal sponsorship program. For the promotion, anyone who donates $100 receives a special certificate, an animal fact sheet, two separate newsletters as well as Fluf white lion plush toy and the chance to win a VIP tour of the zoo and meet the zoo’s white lions. The new year starts with contemporary art exhibits in Scarborough. Artists Josef Kursky and Nicolae Vasilescu Junior’s artwork will be on display from Jan. 2 to 11 at Cedar Ridge Gallery. The opening reception is Sunday, Jan. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. Kursky’s acrylic paintings express his style, which is Surrealism, Expressionism and the automatic painting of Joan Miro. Kursky’s paintings feature luminous colours and geometric forms. Vasilescu’s has

CONSERVATION TRENDS “With the Christmas bird counts, citizen scientists are effectively tracking bird populations and ranges,” John Urquhart, the group’s conservation science manager, said in a release. “This is a cost-effective way for conservation organizations to identify trends so we can undertake

conservation work where it’s needed most.” It was bird counts in 2009, for example, which revealed the toll West Nile virus and climate change had taken on birds across the North American continent, Ontario Nature said. Bird Studies Canada says the complier of a Toronto bird count is Donald Barnett, who can be reached at dwb126@bell.net or by calling 416-588-9724.

Building a holiday tradition block by block MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

“Sometimes I have a plan, sometimes I wing it.”

Brian Clarke has turned his childhood love of Lego into a holiday attraction. Interlocking brick by interlocking brick, he’s built Christmas Lego villages neighbours, friends and sometimes strangers in Scarborough’s Birch Cliff area clamour to see. Clarke started assembling villages in his mother Joan Clarke’s apartment living room when he was five years old, shortly after the plastic Danish brick sets were first sold in Canada. This year is the 50th construction - each one has been different - to go on display in that same living room. “Sometimes I have a plan, sometimes I

- Brian Clarke, local resident wing it,” Clarke, 55, whose latest creation is an amusement park, he said last week. “Tucked away in the corner,” covering about three square feet, is a reconstruction of his 1963 village. “All they had back then was red and white. No doors and not much variety,” said Clarke, laughing. These days, Legos come in 50 colours, and Clarke, who has tried acquiring what collections he can, figures he has 170,000 pieces. Know those big boxes that can hold 20 packages of printer paper? Clarke’s legos can fill 27 of those. He doesn’t favour “kits,” those Lego sets issued to recreate moments in Hollywood movies and such. It would be more fun, Clarke said, to build an elephant out of blocks even if came out looking like a donkey. His annual creations are built in November and put away in January. “This is not my whole life,” he said. Some of his villages have recreated real places, some haven’t.

Themes Brian Clarke’s Lego villages pay tribute to the world around: n 2005 Clarke’s layout paid tribute to the 100th anniversary of Toronto’s Santa Claus Parade. n 2009, Clarke built a plastic Whistler, B.C. in honour of the Winter Olympic events about to take place there in 2010.

Carmelina Puopolo’s chance for a second consecutive U.S. collegiate national title came to an end in the second overtime of the championship game this season. But this month the Scarborough native did get some consolation: she was named the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II player of the year. Puopolo, a graduate of Scarborough’s Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary, was the top point getter in the country in Division II with 57 (on 20 goals and 17 assists). She was second in goals. Her College of Saint Rose team from Albany, New York fell just short of defending its national title, losing the championship game 2-1 to secondranked West Florida. An outstanding student as well, she was also named to the 2012 Academic AllAmerica team. She will suit up for her final senior year next season. At Cardinal Newman Puopolo was four-time team MVP helping her team to the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) championship in each of those four years. She played her rep soccer for Ajax Storm winning four Ontario Cup titles.

A couple of Scarborough high schools will also drop in for exhibition matches – Blessed Mother Teresa, 1-2 in their Toronto Catholic city league, taking on St. John’sKilmarnock from Breslau Friday at 4 p.m., and Blessed Pope John Paul II (2-1), taking on St. Marguerite d’Youville from Brampton Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Centennial Colts, meanwhile, took an outstanding 9-1 record into the holiday break, leaving them tied for first place in their east division with fellow Toronto opponent Seneca Sting of North York. Citizen commissioner named vice-chair of board JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Longtime Toronto resident Maureen Adamson is excited about her new roles as both a citizen appointee as well as the new vice-chair of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). “It is a very exciting opportunity and needless to say I am energized. I’m delighted to be elected,” said Adamson, who applied to serve on the now 11-member TTC board at the end of the summer. “I think it’s great to have citizens on the panel. It’s a real progressive move.” One of four new citizen board members selected from a field of nearly 500 applicants, Adamson learned she’d been chosen in late fall after an interview process and reference checks. Adamson’s citizen counterparts include Nick Di Donato, president and CEO of Liberty Entertainment Group; Alan Heisey, managing partner at Papazian, Heisey and Myers Barristers & Solicitors; and Anju Virmani, CIO of Cargojet Canada Ltd. Equally accomplished in her own right, the regular transit user who lives near Queen Street East and

“In the weeks since I first met Maureen, I have been impressed by her professionalism. Her background in government is certainly an asset. Maureen clearly has a desire to help the public.” -TTC Chair Karen Stintz Woodbine Avenue is the CEO of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. TTC Chair Karen Stintz said she’s looking forward to working with the TTC board’s new citizen members. “It’s early days but Maureen, Anju, Alan and Nick, the new ‘citizen commissioners’, are welcome additions to the TTC and the city,” she wrote in an email to The Mirror. Adamson said her goal is to represent the citizen’s perspective the best she can and to help keep riders informed of the decisions the TTC will make. “To me, that’s a privilege,” she said, adding she’d also play an oversight role in ensuring the Commission’s strategic plan is delivered. Adamson, who has several years of experience in executive leadership as well as customer service, said it’s an exciting time for the TTC.

“It’s a really pivotal portfolio with expansion, accessibility, gridlock and regional transit issues,” said Adamson, whose career has included leadership roles at the Ontario Ministry of Health, Women’s College Hospital, and Mohawk College. “I have a lot of experience in large capital redevelopment projects and public-private partnerships and in all of the roles in my career I’ve had to deal with volunteers, the public sector and customers. Most of my career has also been in the not-forprofit sector.” She’s also a past board member of a large credit union and sat on the board of Casey House, a downtown Toronto palliative and supportive care facility for those with HIV/ AIDS. Adamson presently serves as the chair of the board for Research Canada, a national, not-for-profit

organization that aims to improve the health and prosperity of Canadians by championing Canada’s global leadership in health research. Stintz, who represents Ward 16 (Eglinton-Lawrence), said she’s confident Adamson will do a fine job as the board’s new vice-chair. “In the weeks since I first met Maureen, I have been impressed by her professionalism. Her background in government is certainly an asset. Maureen clearly has a desire to help the public,” she said. “I was impressed that Maureen immediately asked myself and management for detailed information and analysis of upcoming TTC issues. She also understands what she will be encountering as vice chair.” Further, Stintz said as a Beach resident, Adamson would help going forward on the Leslie Barns project, the Ashbridges Bay car house for the TTC’s new streetcars. “Beachers will benefit greatly. They will want to take the TTC more than they do now when the streetcars arrive on Queen and park at Leslie Barns,” she said. The TTC’s new citizen commissioners will serve the balance of the current City Council term, which is slated to come to a close in 2014.

TTC , GO rides to be free on New Year’s Eve

Over the holidays, both the TTC and GO Transit are offering some free rides heading into 2013. From mid-December until the first couple weeks of January, both transit agencies will run on holiday schedules, and are offering some free rides, earlier trips and free parking over that time period. On New Year’s Eve, the TTC is offering free rides from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. The TTC is also offering free parking for those travelling on the system on Dec. 31 at all of its station lots after 3 p.m. The extended schedule means trains on both the Yonge University Spadina and Bloor-Danforth lines will depart shortly after 3:30 a.m. The last Sheppard line train will leave for Don Mills station at 3:58 a.m. while the Scarborough RT is scheduled to run its final ride of the night at 4:07 a.m. Subway service resumes on New Year’s Day at 6 a.m. when new fare price increases take effect. GO Transit, which is extending service on several of its routes as of the New Year, is also offering free service after 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 on all of its trains and buses.

hile much has been written about the Thomson Settlement, we are indeed fortunate that several of the most historic buildings have been saved from demolition. “Springfield Jimmie” Thomson’s lovely, bank farmhouse at 146 St. Andrew’s Road, is one of the oldest brick buildings in Scarborough and stands as a tribute to not only the Thomson family, but also to all our pioneers. The beautifully detailed verandah faces south and is quite visible to the public. It reflects the pride our early builders took in the construction of their permanent homes. The bank style also shows the builders’ respect and understanding of the environment. “Springfield” is built into the side of the bank of Highland Creek. While appearing as a two-and-a-half storey house on one side, it is one and a half storeys high on the opposite side. Only one level of this bank-style house was exposed to the cold north and west winds. The lower sections on the north and west sides of the building are beneath the ground. However, the warmer south side of the building has large windows which allowed the morning sun to brighten and warm the house during an era when electricity and central heating were visions of the future. Adjacent to the house stands a unique fieldstone cold cellar, also built into

Premier announces locked-door policy at schools LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com

Staff photo/DAN PEARCE

Sebastian Coles shows Premier Dalton McGuinty how to make a craft before a school safety announcement at St. Fidelis Catholic Elementary school late last week.

Just days after a gunman killed 20 children and six staff members at a school in Connecticut, Premier Dalton McGuinty was at a North York school to announce a locked-door policy for elementary schools in Ontario. “In the aftermath of that tragic event that unfolded in the U.S., I think there is am important question we have to ask ourselves. Are we taking all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of our kids at school?” McGuinty told a press conference in the library of St. Fidelis Catholic Elementary school in the area of Keele Street and Hwy. 401. The province will spend $10 million for elementary schools to install security devices such as video cameras and buzzers to let visitors in. All elementary schools in the province must have in place by next September a locked-door policy that will mean doors to schools are locked while children are in class, McGuinty said. “Now, we can’t, neither would we attempt to, turn our elementary schools into fortresses. We are not going to brick up these windows. That would be unreasonable,” he said. “I think it (the locked door policy) is an appropriate and reasonable response in keeping with what weighs heavily on the minds of parents.” In 2005, the province provided similar $3 million in funding for elementary schools to

install security measures if the front doors could not be seen from the office. About 850 schools took advantage of the program. There are about 4,000 elementary schools in Ontario and McGuinty said he now wants all of them to be eligible for funding. Improving safety McGuinty said the government is in a constant process of improving safety measures at schools. But he was clearly moved to beef up security measures following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut on Dec. 14. “What that event south of the border did was raise the question in our own minds as a government. Have we, in fact, taken all reasonable steps to protect the safety and wellbeing or our kids in school?” McGuinty said. Before the press conference, McGuinty visited teacher Luciana Di Nizio’s Grade 2 class, where he joined the children in making tinfoil Christmas tree ornaments. He asked the youngsters what they do to be nice during the year. “Help my sister get dressed,” one student said. “Help my mom,” said another. “Roast a chicken,” a third chimed in. Student Mike Tesi then asked McGuinty if he has been naughty or nice this year. “Mostly nice. Depends who you ask,” a smiling McGuinty answered.

City Hall

Casino consultation meetings set for January DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The City of Toronto will be taking the question of whether there should be a casino built in city limits to a number of neighbourhood meetings in January. The city-wide consultation will take the form of a series of community open houses, as well as an interactive website. The consultation will allow input on several questions that council will

be facing later in the winter when it decides whether to welcome a casino resort to the city: should there by a casino in Toronto at all? If so, where would be the best location? What else should council consider in making its decision? Consultation meetings: n Wednesday, Jan. 9: City Hall Rotunda, Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St. W, 6 to 9 p.m. n Sa t u rd a y, Ja n . 1 2 : No r t h Yo r k M e m o r i a l H a l l , 5 1 1 0 Yo n g e S t . , 1 t o 4 p . m .

n Ford Appeal

Lawyers for Mayor Rob Ford have filed their factum to the Divisional Court, appealing the order to have him removed from office. The appeal of Justice Charles

Hackland’s decision to order Ford removed from office will be heard Jan. 7 by a panel of three judges. Ford’s lawyer Alan Lenczner is, as he indicated in court, appealing the decision on four grounds: first, that because council had no power to force the mayor to repay the money, the original council resolution asking that he do so was ultra vires — which is to say outside council’s jurisdiction. He will also argue the conflict of interest act doesn’t cover mat-

ters of the code of conduct for city councillors; he argues the conflict of interest act should only apply to matters whereby a municipality is in a relationship “whereby it stands to gain or lose a financial advantage. His third argument is that the sum of $3,150 ought to be considered insignificant. And fourth, he will argue that Hackland ought to have found that Ford at the very least committed an error in judgement in voting on the matter.
