“Master Ticket Taker” James Loader was honoured during a candle light memorial out-

side the Morningside Cineplex Odeon Cinemas Tuesday night. From 7 to 10 p.m., people gathered outside the movie theatre at 785 Milner Ave. to

remember the man who was a constant in Scarborough movie-lovers’ lives for more than 50 years. Loader also worked at other Scarborough theatres, before starting at the

People can “kick off the new year celebrating Scarborough’s diversity” this Saturday say organizers of a new festival. Celebrate Scarborough invites residents to Scarborough Civic Centre for a free multicultural program from noon to 4 p.m. Outside on the rink in Albert Campbell Square, Mayor John Tory hosts a New Year’s skating party from 2 to 3:30 p.m. with hot drinks and a “familyfriendly DJ.” There will also be performances including a Bengali folk dance, a school choir, steel pan, Spanish cultural performance dance group and other family activities. Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Chin Lee, host for the indoor event, said he wanted to people to gather at the civic centre so they can appreciate what a “hidden gem” it is and “so we build an understanding of each other.” The double program this year replaces the New Year’s Eve countdown show and traditional New Year’s Levee at the civic centre. Both events saw declines in attendance. Lee, however, said he has hopes Celebrate Scarborough will lead to new and larger civic centre events in the near future. >>>CELEBRATE, page 3
