A shipping container market offering fresh fruits and vegetables recently opened in Moss Park, giving food-insecure residents in the area an option for healthy food.

There won’t be demonstrations in the streets of East Scarborough if Toronto City Council shelves the Eglinton East Light Rail Line next week. The 18-stop surface rail route Mayor John Tory promised area residents in January is known to very few of them, and their own councillors have said little about it. But if council, seeing the huge price increase for Tory’s one-stop Bloor-Danforth Subway extension, consigns Eglinton East to a transit slush pile, there will be some who will notice and object. It’s Scarborough’s post-sec-

ondary campuses who stand to gain the most if Eglinton East survives, or - if the unlikely happens - a previously discarded LRT line to Scarborough Town Centre is revived. Future plans for University of Toronto Scarborough are based around the Eglinton East LRT, a route from Kennedy Station through its campus called (in a previous incarnation) the Malvern-Scarborough. Years ago, students at UTSC voted to donate $30 million to build the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre because a previous mayor, David Miller, promised the LRT would reach the campus in time for last year’s Pan American Games, Sitharsana Srithas,

Wayne’s Road Hockey Warriors Saturday at McGregor Park arena

Scarborough canada day Parade

CELEBRATING OUR COUNTRY: Clockwise from right: Premier Kathleen Wynne greets people along the Scarborough Canada Day Parade route on Brimley Road last Friday; the Scarborough Canada Day Parade moves along Brimley Road after starting at the Scarborough Civic Centre toward its destination at L a w r e n c e Av e n u e ; t h e Shriners take part in the annual parade.

National Hockey League star Wayne Simmonds brings his charity ball hockey tournament for kids back to Scarborough for another year this Saturday. The Scarborough native’s fifth annual Wayne’s Road Hockey Warriors tournament, presented by Sport Chek, takes place at McGregor Park Community Centre, 2231 Lawrence Ave. E. This year, 160 youths from the Greater Toronto Area are getting a chance to play with hockey heroes. “I’m very excited and proud to be holding the fifth annual Wayne’s Road Hockey Warriors tournament this year,” Simmonds said in a press release. “Thanks to everyone’s continued support, we have the opportunity to double the number of kids participating in the event and grow the game in this community. I look forward to seeing everyone on July 9.” Simmonds, assistant captain for the Philadelphia Flyers, is bringing lots of his

pro-hockey friends to the event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Members of the public can catch the celebrity game from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. Players include Hailey Browne, Mike Cammalleri, Michael Latta, Steve Mason, Darnell Nurse, Brayden Schenn, Devon Skeats, Devante Smith-Pelley, Kelly Terry, Jen Wakefield, and Anthony and Chris Stewart. The event also features raffles and prizes, and a McCafé Truck and McDonald’s Family Fun Zone. There will be a donation drive as well, for new and lightly-used hockey equipment. Since its inception, Wayne’s Road Hockey Warriors has outfitted 262 local youths with new hockey helmets, sticks and gloves, and made another 18 kids’ hockey dreams reality by covering their registration fees as well as their equipment costs. Visit www.waynesimmonds17.com for more information about the charity, founded in 2012 to help underprivileged kids from the Scarborough community play hockey.

Archer Duenas heading to Rio Scarborough’s Crispin Duenas has been officially nominated for what will be his third Olympic Games in Rio. The two-member team, announced by Archer y Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee on July 6, also includes women’s team member Georcy-Stéphanie Thiffeault Picard. Tactics overshadow issues in the Pride Parade protest

WRitE uS

A

staged sit-in protest by the Toronto chapter of Black Lives Matter last Sunday at the Pride Parade certainly has people talking. But are they talking for the right reasons? Given the status as an Honoured Group for the parade, Black Lives Matter effectively halted the parade for half an hour as they issued a list of nine demands. The annual parade that capped off Pride Month only began to move again once Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois signed the document, seemingly agreeing to those demands, which included reinstating and committing to increase community stages as well as the removal of police floats in Pride marches and OuR ViEW parades. The latter, not surprisingly, has been getting a lot of attention Continue with Toronto Police Association dialogue of president Mike McCormack conPride Toronto for signinclusiveness demning ing the paper and accusing Black Lives Matter of “hijacking” the grand event Sunday. People on Twitter had plenty to say about it too, many siding with police and recognizing their contributions over the years to support the growing Pride movement. It seems counterproductive and counterintuitive to exclude police from a parade celebrating inclusivity, especially as some in the LGBT community also work in the police force. While the protest brought both public and media attention to Black Lives Matter, the reasons for the protest were overshadowed by the tactics. People are talking about whether it was appropriate or justified to do what they did during the parade, rather than how events like Pride can be even more inclusive and welcoming to other marginalized communities. Perhaps continuing the dialogue at the upcoming community meetings on anti-racism that the provincial government is hosting this summer is a good place to start. The first meeting is scheduled to take place in Toronto on July 14 with another in Scarborough on Sept. 13. For effective change to occur, Black Lives Matter must first gain the public’s empathy and support for their cause.

column

Black Lives Matter disruption of Pride Parade what you’d expect It’s hard to know what to make of the Black Lives Matter – Toronto (BLMTO)/ Pride Toronto dust-up. That, of course, won’t stop me from weighing in on the spectacle – even if it wasn’t really much of one. To recap: Black Lives Matter – Toronto, a group that has seen great success staging discomfiting public protests, accepted an invitation from Pride Toronto (another group that has in the past seen great success staging discomfiting public protests) to be an “honoured guest” at this year’s Pride Parade. And things went exactly as you’d expect: a discomfiting public protest, in the form of a disruption to the Pride Parade that was only able to resume once Pride Toronto had “agreed” to a list of demands from BLMTO. Among those demands? No coppers please, at future Pride parades. The pearl-clutching began. The Toronto Police Association demanded

david nickle the city Pride Toronto apologize for signing off on the deal. Mayor John Tory, through his office, joined voices on Toronto council including local councillor and longtime Pride supporter Kristyn Wong-Tam to make it clear that police should be welcomed at the parade for if nothing else than the purpose of keeping open lines of communication between the LGBTQ2S community and the police. And finally Pride Toronto’s executive director Mathieu Chantelois made it clear himself that signing a deal with BLMTO, while he was trying to simply get the parade moving, wasn’t going to be binding, and ultimately, Pride and the community would make the final decision. It would be an excellent bet that police will be back in the parade next year. It’s tempting to look at all

this from the outside and dismiss it as silliness, or an “inside-baseball” dispute… tempting to see this as a bit of a nadir for Black Lives Matter, pulling a disruptive stunt at what was otherwise a healing event for a community still processing the massacre in Orlando – all to extract promises that won’t be kept, and for the most part are over internal Pride matters that might have been dealt with as well using nothing more than a few stern emails. That is, however, missing the point of successful protest movements like Black Lives Matter, which are combatting not only very small issues, but very, very large ones. A few days earlier, Metropolitan Community Church pastor and gay rights activist Brent Hawkes stood with Police Chief Mark Saunders for what had been billed an historic apology by police for the bath house raids in the early 1980s that destroyed the lives of closeted gay

men, and ruined businesses. An apology was a big thing, but also a small thing – and Hawkes spoke that day of how he had contacted the chief, and negotiated an apology, and that sometimes, negotiation was necessary. The only trouble? At the end of all that negotiation, Saunders did not in fact apologize; he very deliberately expressed “regrets” for police actions, and promised to do better — and really, with that, closed the matter as far as police were concerned. It’s comforting to think that change can happen with comfortable negotiation. But the reality is that genuine change requires an irritant to motivate it. Black Lives Matters understands that, and so of course they showed up in full, irritating glory on Sunday.

It’s election time again. Well, at least in Scarborough Rouge-River. A byelection is on the horizon to fill the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) seat left vacant in March by Liberal Bas Balkissoon. The byelection, though, has yet to be officially called by Premier Kathleen Wynne. Nonetheless, each of the candidates – Piragal Thiru (Liberals), Raymond Cho (Progressive Conservatives), Neethan Shan (New Democrats) and Priyan De Silva (Green) — have started rallying support for their work. The usual campaign headquarters launches, fundraising dinners and such. The race for the historically red riding is likely to be interesting to watch, as far as byelections go anyway. Wherever a Ford is (Doug Ford is managing Cho’s campaign) some spotlight is sure to follow. But I urge area residents, especially those who may be eligible to vote for the first time, to take some time to dig through campaign fodder and seek out the candidate that’s going to do right by the area.

priya ramanujam MILLENNIAL MIND As a lifelong resident of the area, I haven’t always felt like the political voices representing us at the various levels of government have been strong advocates on the issues that matter most. From conversations I’ve had with other residents, I know I’m not alone. Whether it’s schools, hospitals, transit infrastructure or employment — whatever the issues are that are affecting you the most and that you are most passionate about, try to find out where each of the candidates — and their respective party — stands. What do they plan to change? What do they plan to keep the same? If the information is not available, attend one of the debates that’s sure to be hosted in the neighbourhood, and put candidates on the spot. Ask tough questions. Demand clear answers. Not only that, but if the candidate is a previously elected official, find out how they’ve voted in the past on similar issues while in political

office. The added insight may help you read between the lines of well-worded campaign promises. Even after someone is elected, the work doesn’t end for us residents. We must actively hold the person accountable. And if they’re not delivering, consider that heavily when the next election rolls around. At a recent panel discussion hosted by Scarborough Arts, George Singh, a community organizer who has campaigned at various levels of government in the area, said winning elections often comes down to who has more resources for knocking on doors and putting up lawn signs. What it needs to be about, though, he added, is community building. “We need more politicians that are workers [rather] than just talkers,” said Singh. I couldn’t agree more. The MPP is our voice, our vote. And Scarborough-Rouge River needs a champion. Priya Ramanujam is a journalist, editor, and co-founder of Urbanology Magazine. special report

Better wages, improved access are the keys to fighting food insecurity >>>from page 1 she said, adding that finding local partners willing to help deliver services is a key part of what her organization does. Scharf noted that while teaching healthy food skills, offering cooking groups and classes, providing afterschool programs where kids can have healthy snacks and creating community gardens are all great ways to combat food insecurity, the key is in making sure more Canadians can earn a living wage. However, that’s something that will only come about when governments mandate it, said Scharf. “The key is to fight poverty, fight for housing, increase wages and social assistance rates,” she said. “We can push for those things at a grassroots level, but we can’t make them happen.” Darcy Higgins of Building Roots (www.pushfoodforward.com/buildingroots) agreed that a wage policy, along with better social support, is the best permanent solution, adding his organization is doing its best in the meantime to bring food access to where people need it most.

We’re trying to bring fresh food at affordable prices to where people need it most.

– Darcy Higgins of Building Roots

“We’re trying to bring fresh food at affordable prices to where people need it most,” he said. “We have a Moss Park Market that just opened in a shipping container on Toronto Community Housing property, and that’s a model we’re hoping to replicate in other communities. We’re exploring and looking for partners across the city, especially in the suburbs.” He said those battling food insecurity can also benefit from connecting with community agencies that can help teach them to cut costs and stretch their food budgets further, by joining

The Toronto Food Council’s Food by Ward report looks at food security issues across the city on a wardby-ward basis.

Food needs vary by neighbourhoods JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com

Michelle Porteous (right) and Jesenia Auceda make sandwiches at Sodexo Canada’s Feeding our Future Initiative at the Campbell Company of Canada in Etobicoke this week. The program helps provide lunches for kids in need over the summer.

cooking programs run by not-for-profits, or by growing their own food, perhaps in community gardens near where they live. The Ashbridge Estate near Queen and Greenwood is a prime example of using available space to bolster food security. A new community garden has been planted there by Syrian refugees to complement an existing community garden at the site. “There are so many communities – especially lowerincome communities – where there aren’t stores for people to buy fresh food,” Higgins said. “It tends to be more convenience stores (instead of affordable grocery stores with more healthy options) in those communities, so you have to look at other solutions.” Toronto Youth Food Policy Council (www.tyfpc.ca) cochair Melana Roberts said projects to boost food security can range from relatively

small in scale, such as new pop-up food markets being launched at TTC subway stations at Downsview, Kipling and Victoria Park stations, to Malvern Eats – a community lunch that hosts as many as 300 guests – to the CEED (community eco economic development), which could see hydro corridors turned into community gardens. “We’re working with Toronto Public Health and looking at four different sites where (CEED) could work,” she said, noting those sites include Rexdale, northeast Scarborough, Flemingdon Park and the Danforth and Victoria Park area. “They’re in neighbourhoods characterized as priority neighbourhoods with a really diverse mix of residents in terms of age, socioeconomic background and ethnicity.” FoodShare (www.foodshare.net), meanwhile, helps various organizations bring food to communities by combining their buying

power. Rather than having each organization make connections and buy goods, they can pool their resources and make bulk purchases from the Ontario Food Terminal, stretching those dollars further. “There’s $29 million spent a year by non-profit agencies in the community food sector (each year in Toronto,)” said Shawn Conway of FoodShare. “That’s a lot of buying power.” “We started out with an emphasis on fresh produce, but now we have a dairy line and a bread line as well.” Many other organizations across the city are helping to keep vulnerable Torontonians fed, but they all acknowledge their work is simply addressing the symptoms of the type of poverty that leads to food insecurity. They say it’s ultimately up to government to determine if and when a permanent solution to the issue will be presented.

Food is an essential pillar of city building. That’s the premise behind a recently released report titled Food by Ward: Food Assets and Opportunities in Toronto. The report, which took about a year to put together, was initially launched by the Toronto Food Policy Council (TFPC) as a way to engage with municipal candidates during the 2014 election on the topic of food security. Now that the election is over, the TFPC is continuing to work with elected officials as well as community organizations and individuals to advocate for more food security programs and initiatives. Using resources from Toronto Public Health, Food by Ward provides a snapshot of food assets across Toronto’s 44 municipal wards, said Rachel Gray, chair of the Toronto Food Policy Council, during a recent interview. Gray, who is the executive director of The Stop Community Food Centre in the Annex, said the findings of Food by Ward can and should be used to help identify food priorities and come up with viable ways to improve the availability of affordable, healthy food across the city. She said the areas that tend to be lacking the most are the suburban, and often lower-income, parts of the city where people usually need a vehicle to go to the grocery store. The outer portions of the city are also often where marginalized individuals live, including those on fixed incomes, and newcomers. Gray also said a lot of the findings in Food by Ward mirror those of the groundbreaking 2010 Three Cities Within Toronto report by David Hulchanski of the University of Toronto, which looked at income polarization in the city from 1970 to 2005. The good news is that food insecurity problems can be improved when people and organizations come together, Gray said, pointing to simple things that can make a huge difference like community gardens and community food programs. And fortunately, a lot of people are interested in getting involved, she added. At Food by Ward’s launch event recently at Toronto City Hall, more than 100 community food champions as well as more than a third of Toronto city councillors same out to show their support. n Visit www.tfpc.to/food-by-ward to view the report.

With the passing of Gordie Howe, the induction of Eric Lindros into the Hockey Hall of Fame and with Sidney Crosby winning the Conn Smythe trophy, and locally with the Leafs drafting a (gasp), American, with the first overall pick in the entry draft, it got me thinking about current Canadian hockey heroes. It’s what I did on Canada Day in the rain. It seemed like the right thing to do. Without Howe there is a hole in the Canadian hockey landscape. Mr. Hockey’s legacy transcended the game. A gentleman off the ice and a tyrant on it. Howe was the ultimate ambassador of hockey in Canada for decades. There can be no doubt who is the current king of our national sport in Canada. I know, I know it’s actually the co-national sport along with lacrosse but we all know what the real national sport is. With his second Stanley Cup and first Conn Smythe trophy as the player most

lute best hockey player in the nation. Yes Montreal was lost this year without Carey Price. Yes Toews and Benn are great Canadian forwards right now. But Crosby cemented his legacy as he collected the Conn Smythe, to go along with two Stanley Cups, two Olympic gold medals, two Art Ross, two Hart, one Rocket Richard , and three Ted Lindsay/Lester B. Pearson awards. Let’s not forget the overtime winner for Olympic gold in 2010. He has also won World Junior gold and World Championship gold for good measure. McDavid’s time may come. It may come soon or it may not come at all. Hampered by injuries in his first full season, he still placed third in the Calder Cup voting as the league’s best rookie. But Sid the Kid is the man right now.

john lyon LYON AROUND valuable to his team in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Sidney Crosby has cemented his position as the current Gordie Howe or Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky’s legacy is strong and unwavering. Crosby is also a Canadian icon, and in my view the best player in the game today. The torch has been passed from Howe, to Gretzky, to Crosby. Lindros was never truly in the conversation as his career was cut short, but his induction into the Hall of Fame was newsworthy. Ironically Crosby plays for one of the most magnificent Canadians ever to play, Mario Lemieux. The list is long of iconic Canadian players – Esposito, Hull, Harvey, Messier. Orr, Richard, Beliveau and many more. No doubt Connor McDavid will have his run at the title. But right now Crosby is Captain Canada (with apologies to Ryan Smith), the abso-

Black Lives Matter – Toronto will be watching over the next year to see if Pride Toronto implements the nine demands to which organizers appeared to agree on Sunday afternoon — including a total ban of police presence at the annual Pride Parade. “Now it’ll just be a matter of seeing how those demands are followed up,” said Black Lives Matter – Toronto spokesperson Leroi Newbold. One of the more controversial demands is one that asks police not be present at the parade. Newbold clarified that Black Lives Matter not only wanted police to not participate in the parade, but also not to police it, leaving security to Pride organizers. “We are asking Pride to take a look at what it means for black communities to have a police presence at Pride,” said Newbold. “For example there are many black LGBT youth who’ve had interactions with police. I think it’s important for some people to understand that even the presence of police at an event like this creates an unsafe environment.” Newbold dismissed the suggestion that Pride Toronto would be legally required to pay for off-duty police officers

in order to simply obtain the necessary permits to hold the parade. “There are many within Pride that have their own security and don’t utilize police,” Newbold said. “Year after year we’ve kept the events safe by using our own methods of security.” Early indications are that that and the other eight demands won’t necessarily be implemented by the Pride Committee. In an interview with the Toronto Star, Pride Toronto’s Executive Director Mathieu Chantelois said that although he signed an agreement to cede to the demands, the next course of action will be decided by Pride’s membership and the community. “What’s important for people to know is that I’m not deciding what’s in the parade, Alica (Hall, co-chair of Pride’s board of directors) doesn’t decide what’s in the parade, Black Lives Matter doesn’t… decide what’s in the parade,” he said. “Who’s deciding what’s in the parade is the membership, and my community… We will let them have the final word. What I did (Sunday) was made the parade move.” The Pride Parade was brought to a standstill when members of Black Lives Matter – Toronto (which had been invited as an honoured guest – stopped in their tracks on Church Street, backing up

other parade floats behind it, and demanded immediate action on a set of nine demands. Chantelois met with them at the parade and signed the nine demands. Newbold said the group is taking the commitment seriously, but noted that the issues that the black queer community has had with Pride are longstanding. “We did get a sign off so we’ll continue,” Newbold said. “This isn’t the beginning of the black community’s resistance, we’ve been having these conversations for years.” Mayor John Tory, however, made it clear through his office that he supports maintaining police presence at the parade. “The Toronto Police have and continue to make significant efforts under the leadership of Chief (Mark) Saunders to build bridges with the LGBTQ2S community,” the statement reads. “As a city, we rely on our police service to keep Pride happy and safe as they did once again yesterday, and the Mayor believes they must continue to do so going forward.” The statement continues: “The Toronto police have had a presence in the parade every year for more than a decade and we would have serious concerns if they were excluded.”

Book launch for ‘The Footprint of a Realtor’ a great success On Thursday June 30, more than a hundred business people and politicians gathered at the Monte Carlo Inn to celebrate the launch of “The Footprint of a Realtor,” the new book by Wade Yang, a real estate agent in Toronto. The event also celebrated the grand opening of Re/Max Imperial Realty Inc., Brokerage, Yang’s new realty branch. Among the well-wishers in attendance were Scarborough MP Arnold Chan’s assistant, MP Shaun Chen’s assistant, Markham city councillors Nirmala Armstrong, Alan Ho, Amanda Yeung Collucci, and Councillor Godwin Chan of Richmond Hill. Piragal Thiru, the Liberal candidate for MPP in Scarborough Rouge River also attended the book launch. The master of ceremonies, musician Enya Shi, led the crowd in singing the national anthem to open the event. Each of the speakers praised Yang for his new book, which is believed to be the first book on real estate written by a local Chinese real estate agent. Yang signed copies of his new book and made an inspiring speech about his own personal story of hard work and success as an immigrant in Canada.

“The FooTprinT oF a realTor”

Police said that on Friday, July 1, a 43-year-old woman was talking to a man near a wooded area close to Piperbrook Crescent and Ling Road in Scarborough, when the man allegedly grabbed her and sexually assaulted her. Police alleged the woman broke free and attempted to run away, but

Anti-racism meetings slated The Ontario government wants to know what you think its new anti-racism directorate should do. North York MPP Michael Coteau, who became the first minister responsible for anti-racism, announced nine community public meetings this week to identify priorities for the directorate, which the

province created this year. Two of the nine meetings will be in Toronto, and one will be in the Greater Toronto Area, the directorate said Monday. The first meeting will be 7 to 9 p.m. July 14 at the Daniels Spectrum on Dundas Street East in downtown Toronto. There’s a meeting in

Scarborough on Sept. 13, but the location has not yet been announced. Times for the events will also be released later. The directorate said it wants to address systemic racism and eliminate barriers for indigenous and racialized communities in Ontario. For more, go to www.ontario.ca/ antiracism

Line is key part of UTSC plans >>>from page 1 vice-president external of the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union, recalled this week. Instead, the LRT was shelved, only to be brought back in a slightly shortened form by Tory, who pledged to build it with savings from “optimizing” the Scarborough subway. That was before the projected cost for the subway rose by more than $1 billion. “The students have been disappointed in the past with broken promises made by the city and don’t want lose out on rapid transit anymore,” Srithas said. Going into debates next week in city council, she added, the SCSU and its 12,000 undergraduate members “hope that the city will stop delaying it, secure the funding, put shovels in the ground and start building the Eglinton East LRT.” It’s easy for downtown-

ers to say the city can build either the subway or LRT in Scarborough, but studies have shown both are needed, said Andrew Arifuzzaman, UTSC’s chief Administrative officer. The LRT would bring lots of smaller-scale development to some poorly serviced streets – Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road – which will create jobs, affordable housing and a better quality of life, he said. Clearly, the city will need more money, added Arifuzzaman, but it’s still 12 years before final bills for both projects are due and there are revenue opportunities the city can try. About $100 million a year needs to be found, “but it has to happen,” he said. UTSC, which has plans to reroute Military Trail as it runs the LRT through its fast-growing campus, needs “some definite answer as to what’s going to happen,” or it risks siting buildings in the wrong place, Arifuzzaman

said. A seven-stop LRT to Scarborough Town Centre, though abandoned for the subway in 2013, stands a chance of reappearing on the agenda next week, as some councillors believe both LRTs together are a sound alternative to the subway. Davinder Singh, president of the Centennial College Student Assocation, said a subway stop would help students on the Bloor-Danforth line, but they’ll still face long waits for buses at Scarborough Town Centre. Many Centennial students use the aging Scarborough Rapid Transit line, boarding at Midland and Ellesmere stations, and the subway plan won’t help them, he said. The route of the abandoned seven-stop LRT to the Town Centre passed through Centennial’s Progress Campus, while the Eglinton East LRT passes by its campus on Morningside Avenue.

The family stage, at Lawrence and Ellington, has lots for kids – from dance, magic and martial arts to The Octonauts, Aladdin and more. Kids can meet-and-greet with The Octonauts, Aladdin and characters from the stage’s Pirate Adventure and Princess shows as well. There will also be a large midway with rides and games, a fire juggler and other buskers. The international festival features more than 60 food

booths this year. “I think we have got everything you could probably imagine,” Wanless said. “There’s probably not a part of the world that we don’t touch somewhere with some of the food that we have.” As well as cuisine from around the world, there will be standard festival fare like funnel cake, blooming onions and roasted corn on the cob. The event doesn’t have its own beer garden, but Wexford Restaurant, at 2072 Lawrence Ave. E., will have one in its parking lot. On top of the food booths, there will be another 50 vendors offering various shopping opportunities. Founded by Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael

Thompson and businessmen Tony Kiriakou and Riyaz Kara, Taste of Lawrence started in a parking lot in 2004. “It’s grown every year, and it’s mostly because of wordof-mouth,” Wanless said. “My goal is to one year be able to go all the way t o V i c t o r i a Pa r k f r o m Birchmount.” Volunteer positions are still available. Q&A Q&A by

Tara Hatherly thatherly@insidetoronto.com A retired teacher, librarian and sailor, Scotland-born Noelle Jack is a longtime resident of West Rouge in Scarborough. Shire Summer is her first novel. “As a lifetime reader and lover of books, the delight in having my own ‘out there’ is beyond wonderful,” said Jack. “My readership appears to span generations and cross gender lines, and has been consistently enthusiastic.” Shire Summer is available online from Amazon and Chapters, and at Ella Minnow Children’s Bookstore, 991 Kingston Rd. The book has been ordered by the Toronto Public Library, and holds can be placed for it now. For more information, visit www.noellejackauthor.com

Q A

How would you describe Shire Summer? “Shire Summer is a novel for pre-teens. It is set on the Scottish coast in the 1950s in a small fishing village just ten miles south

Dan Pearce/MetrolanD

with Noelle Jack author of Shire Summer of the famous golfing capital of St. Andrews. It is a sailing adventure, a youthful protest against parental control, and a story of love and courage in the face of desperate odds. And despite the distance in time and geography there are many similarities between there and here, a large proximate body of water, sudden summer storms and shipwrecks.”

Q A

What was your inspiration for the novel? “The inspiration for the novel is the setting. I have written a story about the place and the heart of my childhood. It began as a series of poems entitled Fifeshire Symphony which drifted sideways into a novel. The place is Crail, a town rich in history and mystery, and a town known for its miracles and pilgrimages, elements which must have slipped into my story when I was looking the other way. The Shire referred to in my title is Fife.”

Q A

What do you hope people take away from the book? “I hope my readers will relish being

dropped into a place that allows them to breathe the same air as I did as a child. I hope they will be captivated by the unfettered freedom of Annie’s life compared to the circumscribed and organized ones most kids have in current times. I hope they will be terrified and thrilled to share in Annie’s harrowing adventures in her pursuit of the elusive William Morr, and be unable to put the book down until they have read the last word on the last page. I hope this story will inspire independence of thought and gutsy action.”

Q A

What are you working on now? “I am working on a couple of things now that Shire Summer is published. So far my readership is encouraging me to write a sequel. I have had suggestions from readers of all ages. I have written an outline and I am testing a title. I am also considering inserting some current narrative threads to an earlier novel, Being Pete, to give it more particular relevance to young readers of this millennium.”

Shaun Chen and Woodside Square Collaborate for

Community BBQ

Woodside Square and Shaun Chen’s Canada Day celebrations, dazzled over one thousand residents from the GTA this past Saturday with an exciting BBQ event full of free food, multicultural music entertainment, children’s entertainment, giveaways and much more. In collaboration with Woodside Square, MP Shaun Chen Scarborough North, wanted to host this free community BBQ event to bring together the residents

of Scarborough and their families to celebrate Canada’s 149th birthday and to even meet Shaun himself. The Toronto Police, local MP’s and other community leaders also stopped by and made an appearance at the event to raise awareness about the numerous programs that are offered to the community courtesy of the 42 Division Toronto Police, Toronto Fire Department and other government services. Woodside Square’s Property Manager, Melissa Chong, told us she wanted to help make this Canada Day extra special at Woodside Square Shopping Centre. “Our mall has been part of the Scarborough hub for almost 40 years and we are proud to be involved in many worthwhile initiatives. We live in this beautiful country and we are so lucky to be Canadians so why not celebrate living in this remarkable place we call home.” With a very strong commitment to the community and by working together with many organizations and businesses, Woodside Square Shopping Centre has taken every opportunity to positively shape our community, and that is exactly what this mall will like to continue to do.

Cherry blossom path planted in Birkdale Part of mid-Scarborough now has its own sakura-namiki cherry blossom path - thanks to Toronto’s long friendship with a Japanese city. Dignitaries from Sagamihara, a Tokyo suburb, returned this week to plant cherry trees in the Birkdale Ravine for the second time. The 20 trees, along with 25 planted last year near the ravine’s Brimley Road entrance, may one day display blossoms to rival those in Toronto’s High Park. They’re also a living symbol for the 25 years since the former City of Scarborough and Sagamihara signed a Friendship City agreement, continued by Toronto after Scarborough’s amalgamation. Members of the city’s Ja p a n e s e c o m m u n i t y, Shinichiro Matsumoto and Hisako Setoyama, helped start the project with support

from Michael Thompson, the Birkdale area’s local councillor and Toronto’s economic development chairperson. On hand for the planting ceremony near the ravine’s c h i l d re n’s p l a y g r o u n d on Tuesday, July 5, were Japanese Consul-General in Toronto Yasunori Nakayama, Sagamihara Deputy Mayor Hiroshi Koga, Sagamirhara City Council Chairperson Yoshihiro Abe, and Thompson. The Consulate-General in Toronto has collaborated in the planting of more than 3,000 cherry trees at spots throughout Ontario. OrlandO Franklin FOOtball camp whOsts

The National Football League’s Orlando Franklin is hosting a football skills camp for kids in Scarborough Wednesday, July 20. The San Diego Chargers

offensive guard, who grew up in Scarborough, is bringing some teammates along for the camp, which also includes ORLANDO some FRANKLIN Toronto Argonauts players. It takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Birchmount Stadium, 75 Birchmount Rd. The camp offers tips for kids interested in playing professional football. CNE seeking volunteers The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) has begun its call for CNE ambassadors for the 2016 season. Now in its 16th consecutive year, “Friends of the CNE” is a community initiative that has engaged more than 2,000 youth and adults, who have contributed nearly 63,000 hours of service. CNE volunteers assist with various roles and duties including greeting guests, providing directional assistance, acting as tour guides and supporting special events and programming such as the daily Mardi Gras Parade. “Volunteers are at the heart of the Fair, and play an integral role in making the CNE a positive experience for all our guests,” Virginia Ludy, General Manager of the CNE, said in a press release. “The Friends of the CNE program is a great opportunity for youth, and those who are young at heart, to apply their skills and gain valuable experience in a unique and exciting environment; and for others, it’s the fulfillment of community involvement and personal enrichment.” The Friends of the CNE enlists more than 100 volunteers each year and more than 80 per cent of those volunteers are between the ages of 14 and 17. Ontario secondary school students can earn credits toward community service hours. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and must be able to commit to a minimum of six shifts, at four hours each. Applications are open to all, but the CNE will give preference to those volunteers who can work evening shifts, between 5 and 8 p.m. All successful candidates will attend an orientation and training session, receive a “Friends of the CNE” shirt, are invited to a thankyou barbecue, and receive an I.D. badge that grants free admission to the Fair. For more information on the Friends of the CNE program or to download an application, visit: www. TheEx.com. Deadline to apply to volunteer is July 15.

Lakeshore East Rail Corridor Expansion (Guildwood to Pickering) Transit Project Assessment Process Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a seamless, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The Government of Ontario is committed to bringing more GO service to the GO rail network over the next ten years. This new service will bring frequent two-way, all-day train service 7 days a week to get you where you need to go. Since the announcement, Metrolinx has started work and is conducting environmental studies across the network to better understand what we can build and how we can build it. The Project Metrolinx is completing a Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) under Ontario Regulation 231/08 made under the Environmental Assessment Act, to evaluate expanding and improving the Lakeshore East GO rail corridor east of Guildwood GO Station in the City of Toronto and up to Pickering GO Station in the Region of Durham. An additional third track is required to relieve a bottleneck that will help to ensure service reliability and enable GO service expansion. The project involves: • Addition of a third railway track between Guildwood GO Station and Pickering GO Station; • Grade Separations at: Morningside Avenue, Scarborough Golf Club Road and Galloway Road; • Review of other road/rail crossings; • Bridge widenings/replacements at Highland Creek and Rouge River rail crossings. As part of the TPAP, an Environmental Project Report (EPR) is being prepared to assess the potential environmental effects of this transit project. Following the first and second rounds of public meetings held in March 2015 and May 2016, Metrolinx is now formally commencing the TPAP. A third round of public meetings will occur during the TPAP in Fall 2016 and further information will be provided closer to that time. The Process The TPAP is a proponent-driven, self-assessment process that provides a defined framework to follow in order to complete the accelerated assessment of the potential environmental effects and decisionmaking within a 120-day regulated assessment timeline. Following this period, the regulation provides an additional 30-day public and agency review, and a further 35-day Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) review. Prior to the commencement of the TPAP, introductory pre-planning activities have taken place. These activities include the study of existing environmental conditions and potential environmental effects of the Project across the natural environment, socio-economic environment, cultural environment, and traffic and transportation, as well as including public and stakeholder consultation. Engagement Building on the first and second rounds of public meetings held in March 2015 and May 2016, Metrolinx will continue to work with the public and stakeholders throughout the TPAP. The third round of public meetings, scheduled for Fall 2016, will present the findings of the environmental studies undertaken on the proposed Guildwood to Pickering Project. Members of the public, government agencies, Aboriginal communities and other interested parties are encouraged to attend the public meetings or contact project staff directly with information, comments or questions. For more information, or to be added to the Project mailing list, please contact: Georgina Collymore Senior Advisor, Environmental Assessment Communications & Community Relations Metrolinx 20 Bay Street, Suite 600, Toronto, ON M5J 2W3 tel: 416-202-4321 e-mail: guildwoodpickering@metrolinx.com website: metrolinx.com/guildwoodpickering Comments and information regarding this study are being collected to assist in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. The material will be maintained on file for use during the study and may be included in study documentation. With the exception of personal information, all comments will become part of the public record. Metrolinx is working to provide residents and businesses in the GTHA with a transportation system that is modern, efficient and integrated. Find out more about Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan for the GTHA, as well as GO Transit, PRESTO and Union Pearson Express at www.metrolinx.com. This Notice first issued on July 7, 2016. Soccer great Dwayne De Rosario (right) lines up a kick during Robbie International Soccer Tournament celebrity game, which he organized, at Birchmount Stadium on Sunday afternoon as part of the tourney’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Robbie crowns champs at 50th annual tourney JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com T h i s y e a r ’s R o b b i e International Soccer Tournament, which marked its 50th year, was an extra special one for retired MLS/ Canadian national team soccer star Dwayne De Rosario. The Scarborough native’s 15-year-old son, Osaze, played in the under-16 boys division with Toronto FC Academy. “I played in the Robbie and now I’m the father of a kid in the Robbie. I’m going to live vicariously through him and get back some special memories,” De Rosario said, following a June 30 press conference at the Delta Toronto East Hotel in Scarborough in advance of the tourney which ran from July 1 to 3. In the tournament, Toronto FC Academy went on to win the championship with a 4-1 over FC Durham. DeRo, who was the Robbie’s honourary chair this year, said the event – the largest youth soccer tournament for charity in the world – is a way for young players to showcase their potential and dream big. “I thank the Robbie wholeheartedly for creating that environment for kids like myself,” he said.

De Rosario is a former Robbie champion with his Malvern Magic team. Along with being honourary chair, De Rosario organized a a celebrity soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Birchmount Stadium as part of the championship day events. The Robbie, which this year is welcoming close to 400 teams playing at about 25 east-end Toronto venues, kicked off its 50th edition on Saturday, June 25 with a tournament featuring 220 teams of players ranging in age from 8 to 12. This past weekend’s soccer action saw about 160 teams of players aged 13 to 18 competing. Mike Ellis, tourney chair for the last six years, said the Robbie is all about promoting soccer as well as raising funds to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF). The Robbie was established in 1967 in honour of Robbie Wimbs, who died in 1996 at the age of 33. Since its creation, the touurney has raised more than $1.7 million for research into a cure and treatment for cystic fibrosis research. This year, Robbie organizers presented a cheque for $50,000 to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

The 2016 Robbie tourney champs and finalists are as follows: n In boys under-13, the Montreal-Nord Pumas beat Rush Academy Rush Canada 2003 Blue 3-1 n In girls under-13, the Barrie FC Strikers beat the Wexford T-Birds 4-3. n In boys under-14, Hamilton United Regional Elite beat Advanced Development Pathway ADP 5-0. n In girls under-14, the North Mississauga Soccer Club Black Panthers beat Ha m i l t o n Un i t e d E l i t e Regional Black 3-0. n In boys under-15, Erin Mills beat Ajax FC 01B Red 4-2. n In girls under-15, the Norwest Strikers beat Saltfleet Stoney Creek Black Elite 2-1. n In boys under-16, Toronto FC Academy beat FC Durham 4-1. n In girls under- 16, Cambridge United beat Edmonton Southwest United 5-0. n In boys under-18, Rush Canada beat the North Scarborough Soccer Club Attack 3-1. n In girls under-18, the East York Blue Devils beat the Unionville-Milliken Strikers 3-0.

Beverly Glen school celebrates successful sports season Beverly Glen Junior Public School in northwest Scarborugh is celebrating the conclusion of a successful sports season this school year. CRICKET – What a year for cricket at Beverly Glen! In only its first year in existence, Beverly Glen was able to win three banners. The Grade 4/5 boys team surprised many by winning the North Conference Championship with a perfect 4-0 record. The boys then played defending city champions Highfield Public School in a closely contested match. Although they came up just short, the boys should be very proud to be wearing the silver medal as the second best team in all of Toronto! The girls cricket team also picked up a banner as the North Conference finalists. All this in only their first year! Coaches were Zachary Allen and parent coach-Felix Samuel. GIRLS SOCCER The girl’s soccer team had an amazing season. It’s been

more than 15 years since the last Beverly Glen girl’s team has ever made it to the finals and they were the first team to win the whole north conference. Initially, the girls didn’t even think that they would win the first tournament but then ended up defeating all of

the teams they played against. The last team they played they tied 1-1 and had to go into sudden death overtime. In less than 10 seconds left the BG girls scored and took the win 2-1. HURDLES – Alima Campbell, a Grade 4 student

has dominated the 80-metre hurdles this track season. She has embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and determination. She started her athletic season in October 2015 by competing at Earl Bales Park in the TDESSAA North

Conference Cross Country Meet where she qualified for the Conference Finals as well as the Cross Country City Championship Meet. In the spring, she won first place in the 80m hurdles at Esther Shiner in the North Conference Track and Field Meet on May 11, 2016. She moved on to the Conference Finals held at York University where she won a gold medal. Alima captured another gold at the City Finals. Track coach at BG is Marie Tatlot. ULTIMATE FRISBEE – The Grade 6 co-ed ultimate team won the North Conference championship. The team consisted of 17 Grade 5 and 6 students. They practised two to three times a week and showed great team spirit. During their first tournament, they played really hard to advance to the Conference Finals. Heading into the finals tournament with a winning streak, the team faced a big disappointment in their first game with a loss of 12-1. However, this did not discourage them as they

used that motivation to win the next two games. With the semifinals ahead of them, they knew that they would have to face the team that had defeated them earlier in the day. Nevertheless, the BG students did not give up and because they persevered, they surprised the other team and won the match 7-5. This crucial game led them to the final match that they ultimately won. These dedicated athletes brought home Beverly Glen’s first ever Ultimate Conference Champions Banner! Coaches are Anita Liang and Zachary Allen.

YORKE, Mildred Pauline June 5, 1923 - June 28, 2016 Mildred Pauline Yorke, affectionately known as ‘Millie’, ‘Nanny’ & ‘Mom’ died peacefully in her sleep the morning of June 28, 2016 at Eden Villa, Chatham, Ontario. She was born June 5, 1923 in Radgoszez, Poland. Eldest child of Frank Wawzonek [1951] & Sophia Toczak [1978]. Much loved & adored sister of Gladys [1994]. The 4 arrived in Canada on the ship Ascania in 1931. The 2 sisters were inseparable all their lives & later became known as the ‘L’Oreal twins’. 4 brothers were later born in Alberta: Leo [1944], Edward [1998], Victor [2007] - (Joan, Owen Sound) & surviving Ted of Ajax - (Carolle, 1990). From roots in rural Alberta, Millie married Paul Yurkowski [Yorke], April 1940. They made their way to Toronto to begin their lives together. In 1967, came their cottage at Wasaga Beach with bonfires, bike riding & poison ivy… A haven for all! Millie was hard working, determined & always ‘on schedule’; she kept her home & gardens immaculate, a self-taught woman she enjoyed the pursuits of travel in her later years, gardening & fresh air, reading, crocheting & dabbled in art. she was best known as ‘the banker’ who worked over 21 years at CIBC, Parkway Plaza. Her daughters Gwen [John Wigglesworth] Whitby & Terry [Dave Mifflin] Thamesville were always busy visiting back & forth, sharing preserves, recipes for borscht, perogies & cabbage rolls & of course gardening. Many birthdays & graduations were celebrated with 8 grandchildren [Matthew, Brooke, Jacqueline [Chris Nemisz], Patrick (Shannon Buell), Jennifer, Gregory, Mark & Michael] & 3 great grandchildren [Treston, Jaxson & Colton Nemisz]. Also surviving several nieces & nephews, first cousins Ed [Bev] Wawzonek, Calgary; Steve [Lillian] Wawzonek, Edmonton & the Smerychynski families in Westlock, Alberta. A huge Leaf fan [her latest jersey was Kessel # 81] and also a great supporter of the late Rob Ford. Millie bought her first computer at age 80, & she drove her Olds til 90 years - when she announced at Easter she was hanging up the keys; the streets of Toronto would never be the same! Many thanks to past neighbours, staff of Eden Villa & her nieces Monica & Mary Anne, for everything you have done to ensure Millie was happy, safe & well cared for. To Uncle Ted for his nightly phone calls as far back as we can remember & grand daughter Brooke for just always being there for Nan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Sat., July 2, 2016 at The Church of Annunciation, 3 Combermere Drive, North York. Interment will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Thornhill. Visitation Fri., July 1, 2016 at Paul OConnor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Ave. E. (between Pharmacy and Warden) from 4:00 - 8:00p.m. Flowers or donations to The Hospital For Sick Children will be appreciated by 3 generations of Millie’s family.

FEARON, Sandra Jeannette (nee Donaldson) Passed away at St. Joseph’s Health Centre on July 3, 2016. Loving wife of Russell. Dedicated teacher for the Scarborough Board of Education for over 25 years. Passionate lover of music and art. Friends and family are invited to St. Paul’s United Church 29 Park St. W Dundas on Friday June 8th at 11:00 for a memorial service. Sandi was full of colour! Please wear bright colours to her Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Sandi’s memory to DAREarts Foundation for Children empowering at-risk kids with life skills to become leaders using the arts. Please sign Sandra’s online Book of Condolences at www.turnerfamilyfuneralhome.ca
