It would be the third time the city has tried to find a thirdparty willing to revive the Inn since the former restaurant and hotel closed in 2001.

Dynamic Hospitality and Entertainment Group, the only company which pre-qualified to bid, submitted a proposal last month.

The culprits in a violent bank robbery might have been marked with red dye for days following the March heist, police say.

Yesterday, police released details and surveillance video of the holdup in which a female teller was choked and slapped.

Police said two masked men, one armed with a handgun, burst into the TD Canada Trust at 2561 Victoria Park Ave. just before 4 p.m. on March 3.

Staff Insp. Mike Earl of the holdup squad said the suspect then slapped the teller “across

the face, pulled her hair and pushed her around.”

The teller complied with the demand for money.

“Both men then fled the

bank with a quantity of cash and some dye packs,” Earl told reporters during a news conference at police headquarters. “Chances are

Earl also wants shopkeepers, especially those in the Victoria Park and Sheppard avenues area, to alert police if they received dye-covered cash.

The suspects are black and in their mid-20s. The gunman is 5’8” to 5’10” tall and wore blue jeans and a polka-dot

bandanna over his face. His accomplice is about six-feet tall and 180 pounds. He wore a black ski mask and carried a plastic Dollarama bag.

“This was an animal act of grabbing this poor lady, throttling her by the throat and using excessive violence,” Earl said. “It is a bold and brazen robbery on a Sunday afternoon.”

Earl refused to disclose how much cash was taken but noted “it very well could be all contaminated” with dye. Police don’t know if the suspects fled on foot or by car.

“We have no direction of travel,” Earl said. “Out the doors and gone.”

Federal and provincial lands pledged to Rouge Park On Tuesday, though, Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent said 5,000 acres of adjacent federal land in Markham would be added to the park, and Ontario Infrastructure Minister Glenn Murray said the province was transferring 5,300 acres in the park to federal control.

“This is a big step forward today,” Pauline Browes, a former Scarborough MP who has wanted to see the Rouge become a national park for about 30 years, said after the announcement.

Browes said supporters of the Rouge can look forward to seeing federal legislation introduced this fall to create the park.

ment determined a decade ago that 7,500 acres of the vast federal holding would never be needed for an airport and declared it “permanent green space.” No federal government, however, added it to Rouge Park.

At least 3,700 acres the province is handing over to what could be a national urban park of 15,000 acres were previously purchased

It was not clear, however, why a map of the expanded park released Tuesday shows significant parts of the former Rouge Park in Scarborough, and particularly the entire Rouge River Valley lands south of Old Finch and Finch avenues, as lands “to be excluded” within Parks Canada’s study area.

Inquiries to federal and provincial authorities could not establish as to whether or not these lands would be part of a future set of transfers to the new Rouge Park.

Details important in proposed election rule changes We think the city might have put the cart before the horse in its huge overhaul of election rules proposed this week.

On Tuesday, city council voted to ask the province to allow Toronto to extend voting rights to nonCanadian citizens, who are permanent residents of the city.

The trouble is, later in the meeting, city council voted to ask the federal government to define what a permanent resident means.

Without that detail determined, we think it’s irresponsible for the city to ask to extend the right to vote without definitively knowing who they’re extendour view ing it too. The devil is in the details.

City has asked For instance, if a permanent resident would be one who province for pays land tax, does that mean ranked ballots only one who owns land could vote? Does that mean someone who’s impoverished but a permanent resident can’t?

That’s just an example, but you get the point.

We think there’s great merit in building a system that gives voice to non-Canadians who permanently make Toronto home. Much of our economy depends on their contributions. Many of our civic decisions are based on the cultural needs of the community.

And in a city where one out of two people weren’t born here, those who remain non-Canadians help shape our cultural identity.

This discussion simply reflects a desire to be in step with the kind of community Toronto has grown to become. We have less interest in a second piece of the city’s reform document. The city has asked the province to consider ranked balloting, meaning second choices could potentially have a role in determining a vote outcome.

We believe this builds a platform for civic elections to turn into an election built on party politics. Vote left, vote right. We continue to call for the preservation of a system which rewards one individual who best represents the neighborhoods they seek to represent – and leave the common platforms which dog other levels of election, at home.

We wonder the motivation for the ranked ballot consideration and we wonder... how would a ranked ballot potentially have altered the vote bringing Rob Ford to the mayor’s chair?

Ford administration clearing path for election

E

arly this week Mayor Rob Ford changed the responsibilities of some councillors who chair committees and who sit on the powerful executive committee. Some media interpreted the shuffle as a demotion for two councillors because they personally challenged him.

That is true, up to a point. But the actions also present the administration as concerned about little other than stifling dissent and preparing for the next election.

Neither of the two demoted councillors, Paul Ainslie nor Jaye Robinson, were entirely supportive of the administration.

Councillor Ainslie led his general government committee in directions not approved by the mayor, such as recommending continued investments in Nathan Philips Square.

He did not support a downtown casino. By negotiations with others in the 2013 budget, he was

david soknacki beyond the headlines deemed disloyal.

For her part, Councillor Robinson tried to reduce some of the mayor’s budget cuts. She was a mutineer when the opportunity arose, for instance fighting against Councillor Doug Ford’s ideas for the port lands. Her misgivings about sitting on the executive committee and the mayor’s abilities were quoted in a profile more than a year ago. standards By the standards of previous mayors, most of these acts would be subject to either a tongue lashing by the mayor’s chief of staff, or a call from the mayor demanding dismissal.

Precedent was set when Councillor Brian Ashton voted against former mayor David Miller’s tax proposals

in 2007. Within a very short time, Miller made the call to ask for the councillor’s resignation. As Miller said, “On key, critical issues they (the executive) have to speak with one voice.

Otherwise the system won’t work.”

This time, Mayor Ford did not set boundaries beforehand, nor did he inform the public why he acted. By way of explanation, his brother said, “we are going in a new direction.”

To add to the confusion, he replaced Councillor Robinson with Councillor Anthony Perruzza, who has a much lower rate of voting with the Mayor Ford.

The only interpretation left is the tremendous cooling off between those two councillors and the Fords.

Councillor Ainslie’s fall from grace occurred when he asked Mayor Ford’s staff to remove the mayor from a military ball. Councillor Robinson incurred displeasure by publicly advising

the mayor to take a leave to address alleged substance abuse issue, and saying that the mayor’s brother ought not to be the mayor’s voice.

Since there are no policy reasons for the demotions, and no new directions have been presented, council is left with the lesson that membership on the executive committee is based solely on loyalty to the brothers Ford, and that the mayor’s brother is his representative.

If the Ford administration wanted to develop a team of councillors capable of introducing a new legislative program, the lessons learned from the demotions of councillors Ainslie and Robinson would be a step backwards.

But if the goal is to withdraw any platform for dissent, they have cleared a path for next year’s election.

Subways only logical solution Sheppard LRT will connect To the editor: Re: ‘Big Move...Big Money,’ News, May 31.

With everyone trying to help the Ontario Liberal government finance the Big Move’s $50 billion tab, did anyone have time to look at the ridiculous plans included in the Big Move that will worsen gridlock instead of reducing it?

What kind of transit do we need? From a purely logical standpoint, subways and road improvements are the only solutions to reduce gridlock.

Consider that most arterial roads in North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke are now at capacity all day.

Why would anyone think it a good idea to take two lanes away to build streetcars in dedicated rights of way that strangles all traffic including emergency and commercial vehicles and prohibits left turns and crossing the road?

Sorbara’s subway to Vaughan, a city of only 300,000, outside the borders of Toronto.

Yet they voted against a subway to Scarborough with a population of 700,000 that could be one million in 10 years.

How about their grand idea to extend the Yonge Street subway to Richmond Hill?

Torontonians pay Today you can’t board a Yonge subway train at Sheppard at 8 a.m. without waiting for multiple trains to go by. Extending that subway to Richmond Hill will mean that even Torontonians at Finch station won’t be able to board, it will become a subway for the residents north of Toronto with Torontonians paying for it.

To achieve any improvements, we must first build a downtown relief line that allows commuters to reach downtown without the Yonge Street line.

Another great solution

would be to replace the Scarborough RT with a subway extension of the Bloor Street subway at a cost close to what is proposed today.

Replacing this already obsolete technology with one that is even older is absolute insanity.

We must persuade councillors to consider the good of the entire city, not just downtown. The Sheppard subway from Downsview all the way to Scarborough was approved in 1986 and never completed.

The citizens of Scarborough have been strongly lobbying for completion of it for years, but will be happy to wait in line, as long as they can be assured that no LRT will be built to decimate Sheppard Avenue the way they did St. Clair Avenue West.

But let’s stop this insane construction of useless LRTs all over the city.

more people to transit To the editor: Letters to the editor should present readers’ opinions rather than pure speculation or a misrepresentation of facts.

Recent letters about the Scarborough LRT have painted a bleak picture of the line, when there is little to suggest that will necessarily be true.

Metrolinx has made public the general plan for the LRT and much, if not all, of it is available online for review.

For example, aside from one short section on Sheppard Avenue where there isn’t the physical space needed, all the existing traffic lanes along the

LRT route will be maintained.

The bonus? No buses slowing the curb lane by constantly stopping or pulling out into traffic so car traffic flows more smoothly.

Of course, the LRT itself will reduce congestion as it becomes a faster, smoother, more appealing transit option than buses and draws more riders who leave their cars at home. There is the higher capacity of the LRT (a three car LRT unit will carry more passengers than a dozen buses), giving riders a better chance at getting a seat, while the separate track means reduced or eliminated delays from accidents or stalled

vehicles. Unlike a subway, stations won’t be a kilometre or more apart, so there will be roughly twice as many stops making. Also unlike a subway, businesses won’t close as they disappear from the view of transit riders underground and are totally bypassed.

The best news? Not only will a LRT cost a fraction of our tax dollars that a subway would need, it will go further into Scarborough, so more people have easy access to rapid transit.

The LRT isn’t perfect (nothing is) but neither is it likely to be the disaster some would make it out to be.

TAIBU helps launch Know Your Sickle Cell Status campaign TA I BU , a S c a r b o ro u g h community health centre, launches a “Know Your Sickle Cell Status” campaign, next Wednesday, June 19, in Etobicoke.

Sickle cell is a hereditary blood disorder that can cause swelling, organ damage, other ailments and stroke.

“Sickle cell is a preventable disease. if you know your sickle cell status you can make informed family planning decisions,” the CHC said in a release.

A blood screening test for sickle cell disease and counselling will be offered during a conference at the Humber College North Campus on Humber College Boulevard from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Additional services for

sickle cell at TAIBU, which is at Tapscott and Neilson roads, include care by a specialist physician, nurses and other health professionals, as well as a monthly support group.

Local residents learn about Enbridge’s Line 9

Line 9, a pipe sending oil unseen across Toronto since 1976, is getting more scrutiny lately.

For one thing, its owner Enbridge has sent different robots swimming through its length looking for weak spots, searches the company says will result in two preventative

“integrity digs” within the city this year.

For another, Enbridge’s current bid to reverse the pipeline’s westward flow and increase its daily capacity from 240,000 barrels to 300,000, has been shadowed by activists raising fears about the “tar sands oil,” or diluted bitumen, it would carry east.

The company’s proposal

is expected to go before the National Energy Board this fall.

Heading west from Montreal to Sarnia in Ontario, oil in the pipeline currently follows a straight line north of Finch Avenue and 0.9 metres on average under a hydro corridor to Hwy. 400, where it heads southwest with the hydro field and crosses the Humber before running out

of the city south of Eglinton Avenue.

Last Thursday, Enbridge invited people to a community open house at a banquet hall on Pharmacy Avenue in Scarborough by the corridor, while outside men were handing out flyers describing diluted bitumen as an “extremely toxic and corrosive mixture” that will make the pipeline unsafe.

While not stating a position, Scarborough-Agincourt MP Jim Karygiannis said the open house was a chance for residents “to ask the hard questions” about the proposal.

“It’s for you to decide. Do not hesitate to contact me,” he added at the event.

Enbridge last summer started sending different inline tools through the pipeline in Toronto, “smart pigs” 25 to 30 feet long and carrying computers and sensors looking for distinct weaknesses.

One tool searched for dents, a second for cracks and a third for corrosion. The

data they collected turned up two spots in the city where “integrity digs” will start in August and finish by the end of the year, said Michelle Wasylyshen, Enbridge’s government relations manager for Ontario.

The digs are preventative maintenance and not to fix an “immediate issue,” but Enbridge can’t say where the work will be until the company shares the information first with elected officials, said Wasylyshen. She added most integrity issues are caused by third-party damage from farming or unauthorized digs.

Wasylyshen said the company worked with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to fix a section of Line 9 discovered last year to have been exposed by erosion at the Rouge River.

Enbridge, which buried the pipeline deeper under water crossings and rocky terrain, says it uses electronic equipment to check pipeline depth and will “either lower

the pipe or add cover in areas where the pipeline could be at risk of damage.”

Although pipelines are a federal responsibility, it’s important for the city to have a say on the proposal, because it’s most likely to send first responders to any accident, said Chin Lee, a Scarborough councillor.

He questioned why displays at the open house said the pipeline “will predominately carry light crude oil.”

People from environmental groups suggested “light crude” is not an accurate description of bitumen diluted by chemicals, and said it behaves differently than regular crude during a spill. “They call it crude oil; it’s not,” said Gerry Dunn, a member of Stop Line 9. “It’s not the pipeline, it’s what they’re planning on putting into the pipeline that’s the problem.”

Mayor shows strength with dismissal

F

iring city councillor Jaye Robinson from his executive committee may have been the most comprehensible thing that Mayor Ford has done in the past few weeks as mayor.

That is not to say that firing Robinson was a nice, good or city-building thing to do. But from the point of view of a mayor trying to hold onto power in an environment where its levers are increasingly eluding him... it makes sense.

Punishing the first member of his executive committee to actively criticize his bungled handling of the crack video controversy sends a message. It establishes a certain kind of strength.

Robinson was outspoken, as the mayor continued to refuse to answer the many questions arising from the video allegedly showing him smoking crack cocaine. She said he needed to answer those questions. She said he shouldn’t be allowing his

david nickle the city brother to speak for him.

And she said he needed to take time away from city hall to deal with whatever issues he might have because until he does, his presence is turning the city into a train wreck.

Those are hard things to say. They are not the sorts of things a member of a strong mayor’s team says.

Weighing in on that mayor’s leadership is not the same thing as weighing in on the mayor’s decision to support a casino. It’s personal. If it’s going to be “business as usual,” as the mayor continually claims, then the mayor’s got to clean house.

No choice.

Mayor Ford’s decision was understandable from the point of power politics.

The funny thing about power politics, though, is that at a point what’s good for the leader is not good

for the team.

Jaye Robinson said hard things. She also said true things. The fact is the mayor has failed to address the serious issues still emerging surrounding the crack allegations. The mayor’s brother is overstepping his role as a North Etobicoke city councillor.

It is very likely Mayor Ford could benefit from some time away from city hall.

And removing Robinson from the executive committee has another impact on governance. For the first time, the most powerful committee at city hall has not a single woman at the table. That is a giant step backwards, whether her removal was an intentionally gendered decision, or the lack of women candidates to replace her is an unavoidably gendered failure.

And that is all too comprehensible.

Sidewalk work expected to start in 2014

That antipathy continued Monday night during an information meeting at Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, where several residents said any safety problem on Chine requiring a sidewalk is caused by parents of children at Chine Drive Public School, many of whom, one man said, “come from outside” the street.

Cars speed up and down Chine south of Kingston Road to reach the school, several said.

“Have you guys considered putting lovely police officers to ticket the crap out of people,” and thus discourage speeding, one woman asked city officials.

Peter Noehammer, a City of Toronto Transportation official said speed and traffic volume studies on Chine show “there isn’t really a chronic speeding problem right now” and the narrower cross-section of the road (the 1.7-metre-wide walk won’t extend the street’s paved surface) should discourage speeding.

The sidewalk will encourage more parents to walk children to school, Noehammer added.

Safety concerns Parents of children at the school were also at the meeting and said their safety concerns are real.

They are in an awkward position, but hope their neighbours understand why they want the sidewalk, said a woman who described children walking to school in icy conditions with cars moving slowly behind them.

“We’re all from the same community, Our kids go to school with your kids.”

Crawford said it’s city policy to install a sidewalk during a road reconstruction, but the plan for Chine is a creative one that deals with concerns of both sides, not a typical sidewalk.

The work will be up for approval at Scarborough Community Council next Tuesday, with a tender expected in November, and construction from February to October 2014.

Consultant Lynn Collins said plans call for 18 to 20 mature trees in the road allowance to be removed, but design tweaks may reduce that number. City staff also said some trees, including a butternut, would be transplanted.

Golfer, 8, scores rare hole-in-one A young Scarborough golfer scored a hole-in-one at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club recently.

Andrew Dreyer, 8, who has only been golfing for about a year, accomplished the feat on the 128-yard second hole with a 5 Hybrid club on May 31.

Although Andrew prefers hockey, his mother Carrie said he is getting a feel for golf.

Golf camp Andrew plays a couple times a week with his family and is enrolled in the junior golf camp at the club this summer. He is the youngest player in the course’s long history to notch a hole-in-one.

Scarboro Golf and Country Club dates back to 1912 and boasts hosting Canadian Opens in 1940, 1947, 1953 and 1963 along with several prestigious amateur championships.

Pearson Collegiate’s girls relay team tops in province Scarborough schools brought back their share of medals from the provincial high school track and field championships, which wrapped up in Oshawa on Saturday.

Included were one of only two relay champs from the City of Toronto as well as its only double gold-medalist.

Lester B. Pearson Collegiate won the senior girls 4x100m relay race. Team members included Sharmila Thasarathan, D’Andra Layne, Lindsey Charles and Kiyara Tennant.

They were ranked a modest ninth out of the 24 teams heading into the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) competition and finished the preliminary round with the fourth fastest time (50.77 seconds), although winning their heat.

In the championship final, however, they turned on the jets to win the provincial gold medal in a time of 48.81 seconds – the best senior girls time in the prov-

May sees price growth for all major GTA home types Prices driven by singledetached and semi-detached home transactions in Toronto Greater Toronto Area (GTA) realtors reported 10,182 sales through the TorontoMLS system in May 2013, representing a dip of 3.4 per cent compared to May 2012.

Sales of single-detached homes in the GTA were up by almost one per cent compared to the same period last year, including a three per cent year-over-year increase in the City of Toronto.

“The sales picture in the GTA has improved markedly over the past two months. While the number of transactions in April and May remained below last year’s levels, the rate of decline has been much smaller,” says Toronto Real Estate Board President Ann Hannah.

“A growing number of households who put their decision to purchase on hold as a result of stricter lending guidelines are starting to become active again in the ownership market.”.

The average selling price for May 2013 sales was $542,174 – up by 5.4 per cent in comparison to $514,567 in May 2012.

The annual rate of price growth was driven

by the tight low-rise segment of the market and particularly by single-detached and semi-detached home transactions in the City of Toronto.

Average condominium apartment prices were also up slightly in comparison to last year.

The MLS Home Price Index (HPI) Composite Benchmark was up by 2.8 per cent year-over-year.

“The annual rate of price growth in May was not surprising given the competition that still exists between buyers, particularly for low-rise home types such as single-detached and semidetached houses,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis.

“We remain on track for a three-and-ahalf per cent increase in the average selling price for 2013 as a whole.”

Council asks province to extend voting rights DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto council has voted to ask the province to allow more than 250,000 permanent residents living in the city to vote in municipal elections.

Council approved that request along with a slew of other proposed changes to

the way that the city conducts elections by the narrowest of margins: 21-20.

The vote came after an intense public campaign to reform the municipal electoral system to, among other things, make it easier for disabled individuals to cast ballots and to re-jig the current first-past-the-post-

system of vote counting to try a ranked ballot.

But if the province acceded to council’s request and approved allowing non-citizens to vote, Toronto could become the first municipality in Canada whose council was elected, in part, by noncitizens.

“I’m so relieved right now,”

said Desmond Cole, the past project co-ordinator of iVote Toronto, a grassroots organization that has been promoting the idea of extending the franchise to Torontonians who may not be Canadians.

“We have to celebrate this moment... .This council has taken one more step forward, and we have to thank all the people who’ve been fighting for this over the years.”

Mayor guarantees to fix TCHC eviction process Mayor Rob Ford said he’ll guarantee the problems identified with the Toronto Community Housing Corporations’s (TCHC) process for evicting seniors will be dealt with as promptly as possible.

“I promise you we are not going to leave one person behind,” Ford said. “Will everything be fixed tomorrow? Probably not. But I give you my word, I guarantee it will be fixed.”

Ford made the comments

in the company of Eugene Jones, the Chief Executive Officer of ( TCHC), after Toronto’s Ombudsman Fiona Crean released a critical report into the way the TCHC deals with seniors whose rents are in arrears.

Crean found TCHC moves too quickly to evict elderly and vulnerable tenants because of rent arrears or alleged changes in income status.

In particular, she found TCHC had ignored recommendations from a public inquiry by Justice Patrick LeSage into the eviction of elderly resident Al Gosling.

Gosling died homeless

five months after he was evicted.

A week earlier, Ford took credit for turning TCHC around, after he dissolved the board and fired the CEO in 2011. The new board eventually brought in Jones to clean things up.

Ford said he and Jones would do just that, implementing an “action plan” for what he termed “those

allowed to slip through the cracks.”

“It’s no secret I’ve got a special place in my heart for people who live in TCHC,” Ford said. “I spent 13 years trying to improve their living conditions from one side of the city to another.”

Ford said he and Jones had worked out a “plan of action” in a meeting last Friday in his office.

Mayor Rob Ford didn’t have the “fortitude” to fire nowformer executive committee member Jaye Robinson to her face, Robinson told reporters the day after her removal as chair of the city’s Community Services and Recreation Committee.

“I’m very disappointed that the mayor chose to tell my staff and not me, after my major investment,” said Don Valley West Councillor Robinson. “It’s very unfortunate, when you invest as I have — it’s unfortunate that the mayor didn’t have the fortitude to tell me to my face that I’ve been removed from executive. I’ve been given no reasons. This is not a mid-term shuffle, this is not a normal time to shift and make adjustments to your cabinet.”

Robinson told reporters that she believed she had been

removed from the committee because of comments she’d made in the media regarding the controversy over a video allegedly showing Mayor Ford appearing to smoke crack cocaine. Mayor Ford has denied using or being addicted to crack cocaine.

Robinson has said that Ford needs to address the questions arising from the now three-week old controversy more fulsomely, not allow his brother city councillor Doug Ford to speak on his behalf, and take time off to deal with the issue. Last week, Councillor Ford told reporters that Robinson’s absence from a committee meeting led to a loss of quorum and the cancellation of the meeting. In fact, Robinson was at home ill and the meeting went ahead – only to adjourn at noon when committee chair Frances Nunziata had to leave.

“I think he feels that he can be the spokesperson for the mayor and that’s not what the

residents of Toronto want,” said Robinson.

She said that she learned that she was removed from the executive committee at 4 p.m. Monday. She said that she was informed through her city hall staff, after a junior member of the mayor’s office asked her to come to the mayor’s office within 10 minutes — something she said was “physically impossible.”

Councillor Doug Ford arrived at the end of the news conference, and fired back at Robinson. “The mayor didn’t have the fortitude to talk to her personally? Councillor Robinson is just being disingenuous,” said Ford. “The mayor called Friday to set up an appointment with her, called on her cell phone at home, at the office, had an appointment set up with her Monday which she cancelled and he tried to set it up again.

She was avoiding the mayor.

Those are the facts – she’s being disingenuous.”

City planners hear opinions from subway riders RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The city has launched the next phase of an ongoing public consultation seeking residential feedback on future transit priorities.

Over 30,000 people weighed in during the first phase of Feeling Congested earlier in the year. This time around, the campaign, conceived by chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat to gain a better sense of transit issues, will focus on measuring support for specific projects.

To that end, Keesmaat and the city planning department have compiled a list of preexisting unfunded rapid transit proposals, from subways and light rail to bus-dedicated lanes.

While passing out the tissue packs, Keesmaat and her team also learned about the rigours of transit travel

from commuters like Pamini Rasalingam.

Rasalingam, on board a train north toward Downsview station from downtown spoke briefly with the chief planner.

A regular transit user, she said her main concern was the unpredictable level of service.

“If there’s a certain time a train or bus is coming, it should be accurate to that,” said the York University student who doesn’t have a driver’s licence.

“I could be waiting for five or 20 minutes. It’s not consistent.”

Jagjid Sutthi placed the blame for regional transit troubles on the federal government, which he said was ignoring the worsening state of traffic congestion despite collecting tens of millions of

dollars in tax revenues from Toronto-area residents each year.

“More people work here, pay taxes here and where does it go?” he wondered.

“Whenever they want to raise the tax they do, and for what?”

On the same train, Allison Miller said she was content with transit service.

“It’s actually not so bad, I don’t really have much to complain about,” said the George Brown College nursing student.

“I don’t notice the delays too much.”

Several events are planned for the consultations in the coming months, including discussion panels and town halls.
