To r o n t o’s P u b l i c Wo r k s Committee has recommended that the Highland Creek sewage treatment plant be fitted with new incinerators to deal with bio-solid waste. The committee backed plans by city water and wastewater staff to construct new, state-ofthe-art incinerators following an environmental assessment that looked at three ways to deal with the waste from the plant: hauling it away by truck as either sludge or dried pellets, or to replace the aging incinerators currently in use at the site. The plan was backed by residents from five community associations in the area, in the form of a 17,000-name petition and in deputations at Tuesday’s committee meeting. >>RESIDENTS’, page 28

GO Train service expansion on the Stouffville Corridor will “severely impact”

the area around Progress Avenue unless the province pays for grade separation there, Scarborough Councillor Michael Thompson warns. The provincial transit agency

Metrolinx has started adding a second track to the corridor for its expanded Regional Express Rail (RER) service, and says nine of the 13 level crossings will get a grade separation.

Thompson, who represents Scarborough Centre, said trains crossing Progress can already back up traffic, and RER will mean well over 100 trains >>>INCREASE, page 28
