Mike adleR madler@insidetoronto.com The YMCA of Greater Toronto says a federal infrastructure grant is allowing it to carry out $2 million in renovations to its aging Scarborough Centre Health and Fitness Centre. The YMCA on Town Centre Court has been “this community’s anchor of health and wellbeing for 25 years,” but the building is in need of renewal and improvements to make it more accessible for people with disabilities, said Debbie Sevenpifer, the Chief Financial Officer for the Greater Toronto ‘Y’, on Tuesday, Nov. 8. At a press conference, Scarborough Centre MP Salma Zahid announced a $643,500 grant from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, which the YMCA says is making its renovations possible. Meanwhile, partners in a larger YMCA-led project in Scarborough’s Bridletowne area are engaged in what the City of

City allows condo towers near Milliken GO Station Nearby companies, mall owners, say project puts jobs at risk MIke Adler madler@insidetoronto.com

Missing man John Grabluk, 45, was last seen in 1997. Toronto police and the man’s family are appealing to the public for leads in his dissapearance.

Toronto police release image of man missing for 19 years ANdrew PAlAMArChUk apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police in Scarborough hope a photo will trigger new leads into the disappearance of a man now missing for 19 years. John Grabluk, 45, was last seen on Nov. 15, 1997 in Scarborough. His relatives reported him missing at the time and are still searching for answers. On Wednesday, Nov. 9, police released a photo of Grabluk, taken in 1996 or 1997, in the hopes of generating leads. Grabluk, a former Canada Post employee, had ties to Elliot Lake, Toronto and Durham Region. He was described as 5'11" tall, 175 pounds with black/grey curly hair, a beard and blue/green eyes. He had a tattoo of a bat on his right upper arm and a tattoo of a skull on his left upper arm. "We'd like to locate him for the family," Const. Caroline de Kloet said. Anyone with information is asked to call 42 Division at 416808-4200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

The City of Toronto is allowing condominium development along a busy section of Scarborough's Steeles Avenue despite objections from industries to the south. Those industries have argued building condo towers north of the Milliken GO Station would spell the beginning of the end for the Steeles-Redlea industrial area between Kennedy Road and Midland Avenue. Toronto City Council, however, at last week's meeting supported a chance to "maximize its significant investment" in the expansion of GO service on the rail corridor by redesignating land north of the station as a "mixed use" area. Around a decade ago, developers on both sides of Steeles Avenue east of Kennedy had opened condominium-style malls, including Splendid China Tower on Redlea Avenue, and planned more commercial and residential projects. Lack of financing and squabbles between Toronto and the

Global Fortune Real Estate Development Corp CEO Dundas Kwok and President Joseph Pang look at drawings for the new 75,000-square-foot retail and community space to be built south of Steeles Avenue, off Kennedy Road in 2013. The City of Toronto approved the development despite objections from industries and mall unit owners nearby. neighbouring City of Markham on how to deal with traffic congestion on Steeles kept projects from happening, but a current study on widening the road and building an overpass for the rail line has sparked fresh hopes. "All the stars are aligning," Jim Karygiannis, a Scarborough councillor who supported the conversion to mixed-use, said this month. "If we don't build on the south side, they're going to build on the north side" of Steeles, on the Pacific Mall and Market Village properties facing the site in Markham, he predicted. Latest plans from Global Fortune Real Estate Development

Corporation, which created Splendid China, call for three condo towers totalling 793 units, and for an east-west road north of the station. Global Fortune has withdrawn an application to allow two more towers south of the station. Proponents say the Official Plan amendment and design guidelines for Steeles-Redlea will protect nearby industrial operators over the long term, while reducing complaints from the towers about dust and noise. Tower designs would "limit views to the industrial lands to the south" with blank building facades, and "enclosed noise buf-

fer balconies on exposed sides," plus Global Fortune promised "warning clauses in purchase and sale agreements" for condos. During a lengthy Toronto Council debate last Wednesday, employees of D. Crupi and Sons, which operates a concrete batching plant south of the proposed mixed-use area, wore red shirts bearing the words "jobs over condos." In a letter last month, D. Crupi and other nearby industrial businesses said building towers "will only serve to limit our business operations and further result in new restrictions which are not conducive to maintaining a healthy employment area." The city, by approving residential development, would be gambling with their investments and 1,300 jobs, the four businesses said. Dozens of unit owners from Splendid China last month also told the city they were "extremely concerned" by the proposal. Once construction starts, mall entrances and its western side will be blocked, reducing available parking, and making it "almost impossible for the businesses within the Splendid China Mall to survive," they told the city. The proposal arrived at council without recommendations because an earlier vote at Toronto's Planning Committee lost on a tie.

Winter byelection coming to fill Ward 42 council seat A winter byelection will fill a seat left vacant by Raymond Cho in Scarborough-Rouge River on February 13, Toronto City Council has decided. Cho was councillor for what is now Ward 42 in northeastern Scarborough for 25 years, but he recently won Scarborough-Rouge River as a Progressive Conservative candidate and became its MPP. Rules say someone must take over as councillor until 2018

either through a byelection which couldn't be held any later than February - or by council appointing Cho's successor. Hratch Aynedjian, who was Cho's executive assistant, has said he preferred to be appointed to the post because turnout following a winter campaign would be low, but he would also run in a byelection. During a meeting Wednesday, some councillors pushed for appointment, but without suc-

cess. More chose a byelection. Neethan Shan, who won another byelection earlier this year to become the area's public school board trustee, is also expected to run. Others who have declared an interest in running are Punch Sockalingam, a real estate agent, and Ferduse Bari, an expert in clean water technology. Nominations for the job are now open, and can be filed until 2 p.m. on Friday, December 30.

Teaching money smarts in school is absolutely necessary

T

his year, for the first time, the total amount of household debt owed by Canadians surpassed the country’s entire gross domestic product (GDP). And according to Statistics Canada, the gap between disposable household income and credit market debt is getting wider - meaning we’re just not making enough money to catch up to what we owe. For people who are struggling to find financial balance, figuring it out often comes well after the problem’s already established. For younger generations, these trends indicate a critical need for them to get money smart before it’s too late. Thanks to the Toronto Youth Cabinet (TYC), there’s good news on that front. Its members started a petition and successfully lobbied the province’s Ministry of Education to include dedicated financial literacy offerings in the high school curriculum. The subject is currently touched upon in a variety of courses between Grades 4 and 12. But it’s not enough, suggests TYC member Prakash Amarasooriya, who spoke to us about the campaign. Teachers aren’t being trained properly and the opportunity for impactful learning is being missed. “If students are aware how to use basic financial tools as well as how to think long-term early, you’ll create smarter citizens, which creates a stronger economy for the Province of Ontario,” he said. Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter met with the TYC and has agreed to a curriculum review and adding the material to the mandatory Grade 10 career studies course. The Bank of Canada warned this year that consumer debt is growing at a historic rate - due much in part to record-low interest rates - and that it will eventually become unsustainable. No doubt, the adult population suffering under the weight of this debt could have benefitted from mandatory financial literacy classes in school. It’s not too late to give younger generations the skills needed to budget, manage debt, file taxes and purchase property. Kudos to the students that are taking action to make those lessons part of the high school experience. But, as the TYC argues, those lessons need to carry enough weight to stick with them for the rest of their lives. The broader student body may not currently realize what good their peers are doing for them, but once they start their careers, take on rent or mortgages and juggle bank accounts and credit cards, it’ll be come evidently clear.

Cycling culture pushing its way into suburbs Two bike hubs open up in Scarborough this year The year 2011 was a bad one for cycling in Toronto's suburbs. Councillor Michelle Holland in Southwest Scarborough wiped out bike lanes on Pharmacy Avenue and Birchmount Road. Her residents, she said, called hundreds of times, demanding this. The Rob Ford administration believed suburban cyclists wanted to ride on well-lit off-street trails, not busy city streets. But that same year, councillors with wards atop the Scarborough Bluffs shelved extensions of the Waterfront Trail through three

MIkE ADLER Edges of Toronto local parks - public lands you own - after getting earfuls from the neighbours. Some claimed cyclists speeding through these parks on new paths would collide with seniors and dog-walkers; they would scare wildlife away. Between 1996 and 2011, there was an "explosion" of cycling in Toronto's core - in some areas, 20 per cent of trips were now by bike - but cycling in outer areas had declined.

Cycling advocates, however, didn't give up on Scarborough or other sections of Toronto far from downtown where, unlike bike savvy neighbourhoods such as Trinity Bellwoods and Danforth Avenue, cyclists in traffic might still seem alien. In 2016, they opened two bike hubs in Southwest Scarborough where, says Marvin Macaraig of Scarborough Cycles, riders shun wider roads for Birchmount, Pharmacy and Midland Avenue, where traffic volumes are lower. It's not just a lack of bike lanes: Toronto's suburbs have few stores selling or repairing bikes (for all its size, Scarborough has just one). A downtown innovation, hubs offer repair clinics, safety tips and group rides,

building confidence in cycling. "In this first year," Macaraig says "we have learned that there is a definite need and appetite for increased cycling programming in Scarborough." Researching barriers to cycling in the suburbs, Beth Savan, a senior fellow at University of Toronto's Massey College, believes they can be overcome. Drivers got used to cyclists downtown, she says, and it won't be rapid, but this "cultural shift" will happen in the suburbs, too. If the city sticks to its plans, bike lanes are coming by 2025 to Midland in Scarborough, to Jane, Yonge and Bathurst streets in North York, and to Burnhamthorpe Road and Renforth Drive in Etobicoke. Your neighbours might even like it.

Motorists urged to be prepared for winter weather ANdrew PAlAMArChUk apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Motorists should get themselves and their vehicles ready for winter driving before the bad weather hits, CAA and Toronto police urge. "The weather is set to turn, and we want to get drivers thinking about how to be best prepared and to stay safe in these conditions," CAA spokesperson Jeff LeMoine said. "Changing your mindset so that you're more patient, leaving yourself more time and space on the road, all of those things will help to keep us all safe." Police and CAA held a media event in Etobicoke Wednesday morning where officers used a special "skid car" to demonstrate techniques to get out of a skid. "The easiest way to describe it is you steer where you want to go," Const. Clint Stibbe said. "The reality is in some cases when you do that,

you overcorrect and then the vehicle begins to swing back the other way. You now have to compensate for that correction and you have to do it immediately. If you have to sit there and think about it, you're not prepared ... (and) you'll be out of control and involved in a collision." Snow could hit Toronto on Sunday, and police see a spike in collisions whenever there's a sudden change in weather conditions. Stibbe said motorist behaviour should also change by slower driving and no sudden braking. "We depend so much on our safety system in the cars. In some cases we're putting so much faith in them that we're overdriving the road conditions and the safety systems and essentially putting ourselves out of control." LeMoine said vehicles should also be made ready for the winter. "You want to make sure your lighting system

is fully working," he said. "Your windshield wipers should be functioning well because if you can't see through your windshield it's unsafe, and make sure your washer fluid is topped up, that your oil is in good standing." LeMoine also suggests having a survival kit and an emergency roadside kit in vehicles. The kits should include a snow brush, an ice scraper, a shovel, a first aid kit, extra clothing, a flashlight, extra windshield washer fluid along with food like granola bars and bottled water. Having Kitty Litter is also a good idea. "If your vehicle becomes stuck in a situation where the tires can't grip the surface of the road, sprinkling some Kitty Litter near the tires can sometimes help you gain just enough traction to get out of that situation," said LeMoine. CAA also recommends having a set of four match-

"They do make a large difference over all-season tires, and they can help reduce your stopping distance by up to 25 per cent," LeMoine said. CAA offers these addi-

Youth cabinet helping improve financial literacy Tara HaTHerly thatherly@insidetoronto.com

T

he Toronto Youth Cabinet wants to ensure everyone in Ontario graduates high school knowing how to budget, manage debt, file taxes and purchase property. And the group, the official youth advisory board of the City of Toronto, has convinced Ontario’s Ministry of Education to make it happen. “I think it’s something that a lot of youth have been talking about for a while, that they don’t feel that they are learning life skills in the current education system,” said Toronto Youth Cabinet (TYC) member Prakash Amarasooriya, who is representing the group’s initiative to have a clearly defined financial literacy component added to Ontario’s Grade 10 career studies course. “If students are aware of how to use basic financial tools as well as how to think longterm early, I think you’ll create smarter citizens, which creates a stronger economy for the Province of Ontario.” In October, the TYC started a petition asking the Province to make the change. According to the Ministry, financial literacy is already dispersed throughout various courses between Grades 4 and 12. “I think there may be a disconnect between what is intended with the curriculum as well as what is actually being done at school,” Amarasooriya told Metroland Media Tuesday, Oct. 25, ahead of a meeting with Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter at Queen’s Park Tuesday, Nov. 1. He believes the curriculum’s current references to financial literacy are too vague. “We don’t think it’s being done as effectively as it can be,” he said. “Ideally, I think we wanted it to be incorporated in multiple courses, just like the government, but we wanted it to at least be in one specific course, because that way you can train teachers as well. “Teachers have been complaining that they’re not being trained to teach this subject material. So if they don’t feel confident in it, they will not teach students well. And so if you put it into the Grade 10 careers course curriculum, you

The Toronto Youth Cabinet (TYC), the official youth advisory board to the City of Toronto, is petitioning Ontario’s Ministry of Education to include a clearly defined financial literacy component in the mandatory Grade 10 career studies course. Prakash Amarasooriya is representing TYC in the initiative, and poses here before meeting with Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter at Queen’s Park. can train teachers to deliver that material in a competent and confident way.” In a recent statement, recognizing November as financial literacy month, The Ministry of Education noted it has spent more than $3 million on financial literacy resources and professional learning opportunities for elementary and high school teachers since 2011. Amarasooriya said incorporating the material into the Grade 10 career studies course makes sense because the course is mandatory, so all students would get the knowledge they need to succeed financially. It also comes at a time when students are starting to use bank accounts and preparing to apply for student and car loans, and credit cards, in the near future. He believes the topic can be added to the current course without sacrificing anything

from its curriculum. The course currently focuses on developing self-assessment, personal-management, careerplanning, job-search, decisionmaking, organization, transition and communication skills. Some schools bring in financial literacy experts to teach students skills, noted Amarasooriya, adding, “The problem with that is that that only applies to some schools, and more than not it’s the affluent neighbourhoods.” He didn’t know what to expect when he met with Minister Hunter, but he and the TYC were thrilled to find she and the Ministry of Education want to work with the group to make its vision a reality. “I’m still in disbelief about it,” he said, following the meeting. “It was a great meeting and a productive one. We just want to make sure going forward

that we don’t lose sight of the objective and that we actually create meaningful change in the curriculum.” The TYC is excited to work with the Ministry to develop a curriculum, he added. The group is doing its homework and consulting with relevant parties to see what resources are available to aid curriculum development and how financial literacy is taught in other parts of Canada. “We appreciate the feedback we received from members of the Toronto Youth Cabinet and will continue to work with educators, parents and students to inform next steps in curriculum review,” said Minister Hunter in a statement emailed to Metroland Media. “By learning about financial literacy, students will have the skills they need to thrive now and throughout the rest of their

lives.” On Nov. 3, Minister Hunter posted a video to Twitter captioned, “Hey @TOYouthCabinet, I hear you on #FinLit! Good news: We’re improving financial literacy for students.” In the video, she talks about the importance of financial literacy for ensuring student success and economic strength. “Ensuring that students have the information that they need for everyday life is critical,” she said. “We will be updating the Ontario curriculum careers course to have a dedicated module for financial literacy.” Visit http://bit.ly/2fC3ipu to read the TYC petition and proposal. Amarasooriya encouraged people to weigh in on developing a financial literacy curriculum by commenting on the petition page noting what they would like included.

Train fatality strands hundreds of passengers ANdrew PAlAMArChUk apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

A man was struck and killed by a VIA train in Scarborough, stranding passengers on the train as well as passengers on a nearby GO train for more than two hours Monday night. Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said the VIA train hit the man near Rouge Hill station at about 8 p.m. The investigation scene included the GO train and the station platform. "We had a very difficult fatality investigation scene to deal with," Aikins said. About 475 people were stranded on the GO train for more than two hours. "We tried to keep people on that train informed and calm. I know there were people upset," Aikins said. "It's fairly close to the station, so they thought they could just get out, but we didn't want to traumatize them or interfere with the police investigation." GO also needed to get a replacement crew, which is standard protocol whenever there is a fatality. Train service was disrupted for the remainder of the night. "We continued operating trains from Union to Guildwood,

bus service between Guildwood and Pickering and then trains operated between Pickering and Oshawa, so we continued that for the remainder of the night," Aikins said. Just the day before, GO service was suspended because of a fatality on the Lake Shore East line near Whitby. "Fatalities cause very long delays for customers and suspensions of service," Aikins said. The majority of train fatalities, including the one Monday night, are suicides. "It varies from year to year ... from 75 to 90 per cent," she said. The remainder of the incidents are accidents such as one involving a 19-year-old man on a bike who was hit at a level crossing earlier this year. "A GO train went by, and even though the arm was still down, he thought the train has gone by so it's OK to go without knowing there was a VIA train coming in the opposite direction," Aikins said. There has been an increase in train fatalities over the past several weeks. "(It's been a) very difficult, bad month," Aikins said. For immediate crisis help 24 hours a day, call the Toronto Distress Centres at 416-408-4357.

Do you have good hearing but maybe not as good as it used to be? Auditory deprivation may be prevented for some clients through the new Unitron MoxiTM Now hearing aids. These virtually invisible hearing aids are the smallest‡ wireless hearing aids in their class and automatically adapt to any listening environment, making it easier to understand speech while providing appropriate amplification needed to stimulate the brain.

insidetoronto.com

Many people find themselves frustrated when they can hear, but not understand speech. Hearing loss can develop so gradually people do not even realize they have it. Even mild cases can lead to difficulties with processing speech. Fortunately, modern hearing aids can help by stimulating the auditory centers of the brain responsible for speech understanding. Understanding speech is a necessary part of communication and hearing loss has been proven to limit our daily interactions. Do you rely on visual cues (e.g. reading lips) or are you applying more effort while listening? Maybe you are completely avoiding difficult listening situations all together? If so, these are common signs of hearing loss and it is important to understand the potential impact of leaving it untreated. Did you know that untreated hearing loss can cause the auditory nerves and auditory cortex of the brain to not be stimulated properly? The technical term for this is “auditory deprivation.” People who suffer from auditory deprivation often have difficulty processing speech.

The Unitron MoxiTM Now hearing aid helps stimulate the auditory centers of the brain that are important for processing speech. Research shows that the longer an ear goes without hearing, the greater the effect of auditory deprivation can be. Hearing aids may prevent auditory deprivation as they provide stimulation to the auditory nerves and auditory cortex. Further, the speech understanding abilities of some people improve with hearing aids (recovery from auditory deprivation). However, if hearing aids are put off for too long, it can cause long-lasting speech understanding difficulties.

Sears Hearing Centre is currently looking to not only improve hearing, but also to enhance the clarity of speech. We are particularly interested in candidates who find understanding speech to be difficult and can benefit from a free trial to see whether they notice an improvement. Interested people can register for a free hearing test and a no-obligation trial of the new Unitron MoxiTM Now hearing aids by calling 1.888.771.7459 or visiting searshearing.ca/now.

‘Alt-right’: we must be vigilant

I thought it might be nice to talk about garbage privatization in today's column - it looks as though garbage privatization, as in the collection of roadside waste by private companies rather than city workers, will be coming to Toronto Council in January. But there's another kind of garbage to talk about this week. It's come to the surface just now, with timing that shouldn't be surprising but is still shocking. It is white supremacism, and hate crime. On Monday, Insidetoronto.com's Joanna Lavoie and others reported sightings of flyers, promoting a set of so-called "alt-right" websites, and headlined, "Hey, WHITE PERSON." The flyers / posters were tacked up near a school at Stan Wadlow Park in East York. It's been comforting to believe the "alt-right" movement - white supremacy, dressed up with but-

the neighbourhood - otherwise, how would they know to find the Rabbi's home? It's not as though it's new. B'nai Brith has been tracking anti-Semitic incidents for decades. In 2015, the group logged a total of 1,277 such incidents - one of the higher numbers in the past decade, which has seen incidents numbering between 1,000 and 1,200 a year. Racism, nativism, hate ... call it what you will, its seeds are planted in Canadian soil just as they are in America. And the electoral validation of a campaign that was based on those things has given them all cause to germinate. What to do in the face of it? Tearing down the posters is a start. And after that - we've got to find a way to take out the garbage.

DAVID NICKLE The City toned-down collars and a patina of pseudointellectual pseudo-rigor - as a beast that came up along with the Trump ascendance in the United States, and one that roams mainly there; and to think that we're a bulwark against that sort of hate, with our own Trudeau ascendance holding the dark back with "sunny ways." Thinking this is, of course, naïve. In Ottawa Monday night, someone sprayed a swastika and an anti-Semitic slur on the front door of Rabbi Anna Maranta's home. In interviews, she says it's likely someone in

Tears over Trump at climate change conference: UTSC student Work to implement Paris Agreement will continue, vows student activist MIke Adler madler@insidetoronto.com Christa Croos arrived in Marrakech, Morroco last week as part of a Canadian youth delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference. A student at University of Toronto Scarborough campus (UTSC) and an environmental activist, Croos was there to help the world move forward on a climate change treaty reached a year ago in Paris, France. Then came news Donald Trump, who calls climate change a hoax, had been elected president of the United States. "There were a lot of tears and a lot of people, including myself, were not mentally or otherwise prepared to deal with a Trump win," Croos wrote before returning from the conference, which

ended on Nov. 14. The conference was "a difficult space to navigate" after the election result, but a strengthened "resolve to do more and do better" rose out of the shock and pain, she said. "We are not going to allow one country to derail all the necessary and crucial work that has gone into the Paris Agreement." Croos, recently involved in a campaign calling for U of T to divest its financial holdings from fossil fuels, was doing "climate justice work" before she visited her birthplace of Sri Lanka last summer. There, she said, she witnessed harm climate change is already doing: subsistence farmers struggling to cope with droughts and extreme heat, and wild elephants finding what was left in a water hole too muddy to drink. "The same struggles I witnessed at the muddy watering hole are manifesting globally in a multitude of ways," Croos wrote on a blog, OurClimate.ca. She became convinced the industrial nations of the north, in particular, are content to

stand by when it comes to climate change. Trump has said withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, which the U.S. and Canada signed, is one of his priorities, but Croos said work toward action on climate will continue, "with increased urgency." For "indigenous folks and people from the global south," there is no choice; this is a struggle for their survival, said Croos. "There is definitely still hope but there is a hard road ahead."

UTSC feels like a cultural hub

Carved along Highland Creek to the south, with glorious autumn views of Rouge Valley to the north, my dispatch this week comes from one of Scarborough’s great, evolving institutions - the University of Toronto Scarborough campus (UTSC). Like the brilliant, newsmaking meteor captured by its astronomical observatory, UTSC is a burst of inspiration and vibrancy. If ever there was a Scarborough gem, this is it. I recommend my socially aware, creative, smart Grade 11 daughter investigate. UTSC is diverse. Alumni include: Mitzie Hunter, Minister of Education; Bill Blair, former Toronto police chief and now MP; and tech guru Marc Saltzman. With nearly 13,000 open minds, 40 community partners, 180 program options, and the moniker “co-op campus”, UTSC offers an ideal mix of academic and hands-on learning. Options include psychology, biodi-

He’s an author, visionary legend of Canadian athletics and activism, Canadian Olympic Hall of Famer and Order of Canada recipient. He tells me a multimillion-dollar expansion is in full swing, including a new Social Sciences centre on Military Trail where – among other things – research about global suburban communities will happen. My daughter knows her strengths, interests, and ambitions well. She will decide her own future. But I’m plugging for UTSC.

Prepare for cold weather with HVAC maintenance Last year’s unseasonably warm weather offered a reprieve from high fuel bills and relying on the heater. Unfortunately, this year winter is back. Before the cold weather approaches, homeowners should look into proper HVAC maintenance. “We recommend that your heating and cooling system be checked and serviced twice a year; ideally a spring and autumn tune-up,” says Payman Astani of Alliance Energy Source in Markham. “If your house is dry, or not heating up evenly, or taking too long to heat up or cool down, or you’re

hearing strange noises, it may be a sign that your HVAC needs maintenace,” says Payman. Another sign it’s time to call a profession? Rising utility bills for no apparent reason. According to Alliance Energy Source, properly maintaining your HVAC, including keeping air flow free of dust, dirt and debris, is the best way to make sure no energy is wasted. If your current system is in need of replacement, your efficiency options are expanded and the potential for savings compared to your existing sys-

tem can be quite dramatic. Alliance Energy Source can provide the consultation and information about all options and system combinations that might be right for your situation. Alliance Energy Source is a family-run business that has been operating in Markham since 2000. The company supplies and installs almost all types of furnaces and air conditioners manufactured by many different brands. All Alliance Energy Source’s heating and air conditioning products are highly energy efficient, which are not only high quality

Turn your home into a cozy winter wonderland

Decorate your home this season in a style that’ll last you well be-

yond New Year’s. This trending look features soft textured fab-

rics, natural elements, soothing colours, and creature comforts.

Use these ideas to make your very own winter wonderland.

1. Texture, texture, texture. Nothing says cozy better than rich, interesting textures. Think Sherpa-lined blankets, woollen pillows, chunky wooden accents, and wicker baskets. Add nature-inspired items like pinecones, twigs, and branches for a rustic countryside atmosphere even in the city. 2. Hand-crafted elements. Incorporate antique pieces with a worn, lived-in appearance, like a vintage chair or centrepiece. Or DIY by painting garage sale finds using distress-look techniques. Look up easy craft projects online to create unique pieces that create character and visual interest. 3. All about comfort. Cold weather and winter storms call for a most comforting home that relaxes the senses. For touch, have tons of blankets and slippers on hand. For sight, use calming colours like creams, whites, light blues, and greys. For smell, soothing scents in oils, candles, and baked goods are key. Embrace a bit of messi-

ness, as it’s part of the hibernation-mode look — feel free to leave magazines on the coffee table and throws on the couch. 4. Be smart about it. Is there anything worse than having to get up to adjust the curtains when you’re snuggled up in the perfect position under a cozy blanket? You don’t have to, with Hunter Douglas smart home technology. Use the PowerView motorization system to move your window treatments to the exact position you want and then control and schedule them with your smartphone or tablet. 5. Lighting. The right lighting can set the perfect mood and create a relaxing environment. A fireplace is ideal, but you can also fake one by grouping candles together. String decorative white lights on top of the mantle or along shelves for a pretty wintery twinkle. Flameless tea lights in vases are also great if you have little ones running around.

Funds still needed for YMCA-led hub in Agincourt ● From page 1 Toronto calls “a final attempt” to pull together necessary funds for a stalled neighbourhood hub. The city, the YMCA, the United Way of Toronto and York Region and The Scarborough Hospital agreed years ago to build the Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre on the former site of Timothy Eaton Business and Technical Institute in Agincourt. But despite their efforts, the project wasn’t able to secure enough of the hub’s cost, now estimated at $65to $72-million, from the federal and provincial governments. Toronto Council last month reinstated the agreement for the hub – which besides a YMCA, would contain a hospital dialysis centre, and space for community agencies – but only until June 30, 2017. Sevenpifer said the hub is “in a holding pattern,” and city staff

are investigating a “Plan B” to develop the Bridletowne site in case resources for the original hub plan aren’t sufficient. Scarborough-Agincourt MP Arnold Chan said the hub is important and he is working to get federal funds for it, while ScarboroughAgincourt MPP Soo Wong is trying to get a capital grant from Ontario’s health ministry. “There’s clearly a commitment from all orders of government to try to make this happen,” Chan said this week, but added the city’s June 30 deadline “may be unrealistic.” The likeliest source of federal money for the hub is the second phase of a federal social infrastructure fund for cities, meant primarily for social housing, which cannot be announced until after the current budget cycle ends in March, he said. Scarborough’s Chinese Outreach Committee made the Bridletowne hub the beneficiary of its Mid-

Autumn Ball last month, hoping to keep the project in the public eye. Work in the Scarborough Centre YMCA is underway and will finish in March 2018, renovating washrooms and ramps to fit new provincial disability standards and adding signs which can be read by people with little or no vision. Other parts of the building will be refreshed, including the lobby. Carla Acosta, a YMCA youth advisory committee member from Scarborough, called the YMCA “a safe, supportive and empowering place” for young people. “Here, youth can develop lifelong skills and access the support they need to become communityengaged adults,” she said. The project is one of 10 in the works by the GTA ‘Y’, including a new ‘Y’ fitness centre under construction on Kingston Road just west of Scarborough in the Beach neighbourhood.

Polar bear Juno gets Army promotion for birthday Tara HaTHerlY thatherly@insidetoronto.com

Private Juno, a very special polar bear at the Toronto Zoo, got a very special present for her first birthday. Juno isn’t just any polar bear, she’s the Canadian Army’s official mascot. In a ceremony Wednesday, Nov. 9, ahead of her first birthday on Remembrance Day, Friday, Nov. 11, Private Juno was promoted by the Army. “When Juno was born, she was given the rank of Honorary Private to commemorate her affiliation with the Army, but we’re very proud this year to be able to promote her to the rank of Honorary Corporal,” Brig.-Gen. Stephen Cadden, Commander of the 4th Canadian Division, said during a ceremony at the Toronto Zoo. After the announcement, a placard showing the badge of Juno’s new rank was unveiled in her outdoor exhibit, leaning against rocks alongside an ice “cake” made from some of her favourite treats - apples, carrots, fish and ground meat. Juno ate

some birthday cake and checked out her new badge for a few moments before flipping the placard over with her paw. “She’s a very playful bear,” Heather Kalka, polar bear caretaker, told Metroland Media. “She also has a feisty side. So if she’s not getting what she wants, she definitely will very clearly let you know. “She’s kind of our diva. She definitely knows what she wants and is very good at communicating what she wants when she wants it.” Born at just 800 grams, she now weighs in at 88 kg. Swimming is her favourite pastime, along with showing off. “She’ll do something, and then she’ll immediately look to me, like, did you see that? Whether it be a proud moment or a reassurance moment, but she definitely likes to have her activities recognized,” shared Kalka. “She’s very people-oriented, so anytime there is any sort of public, she definitely shows off.” As well as being an ambassador for the Army, Juno is an ambassador for her species.

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Juno was given the rank of Honorary Corporal by the Canadian Army for her first birthday at The Toronto Zoo Wednesday. “She’s been an incredible ambassador for our conservation education, just letting people know about the issues polar bears are facing in the wild,”

said Maria Franke, Toronto Zoo curator of mammals. “Currently listed as vulnerable, polar bears are at risk of becoming endangered if climate change

is not addressed. With the ever changing environment, we need to understand what these changes will mean to polar bear populations, so that we can do as much as we can to have an amazing impact on saving this incredible species.” Along with Juno the polar bear at the Toronto Zoo, the Army’s official “living” mascot, there is Juno the travelling mascot, a costumed version that attends Army events. Juno’s name honours the accomplishments and sacrifices of Canadian Forces during the Second World War, when thousands of Canadian soldiers landed at Juno Beach in Normandy, France on D-Day. Brig.-Gen. Cadden noted her name, and her Remembrance Day birthday, are more great ways Juno encourages people to explore and connect with Canada’s military history. “It’s a constant reminder to people that there are important things we have to remember,” he said. “One more reminder for us to be thankful for the country we’re in.”

CondomTO design contest winners announced

insidetoronto.com

Winning designs will be used for 2017 condomTO wrappers Toronto Public Health has announced the winners of its 2016 condomTO design contest. The new condoms with brand-new wrappers will be available for free in 2017 at Toronto Public Health's sexual health clinics across the city and at partner agencies. The city received hundreds of entries, which were narrowed down to 10 finalists. Four winners, two in an open category and two in a student category, were announced at an awards ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 15. The winners of the contest are: • Open Grand Prize: Diane Adams, a graduate of Seneca College's graphic design program; • Open Runner-up: Serge Leshchuk, a local social media strategist and content creator; • Student Grand Prize: Andrea Por, a student of Advertising and Graphic Design at Humber College; • Student Runner-up: Janine Thomas, a fourthyear student in the Bachelor of Design program at York Sheridan. The winners were selected through a judging panel and fan voting. Residents were invited to cast votes online and in person at Metro Hall for the two design categories - a student category for individuals enrolled in a Toronto post-secondary school, and an open category for non-students. The panelists were asked to judge all designs based on the following criteria: design quality, civic pride and originality. The top 10 designs, five for each category, received the top scores from the panel. "We are very pleased with the positive response and interest the condomTO design contest received," said Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Toronto's acting Medical Officer of Health. "Sexual health is a key part of good health and the more we can get people thinking about this topic, the more we can work together to improve the health of residents." The four winners were selected by an expert panel of judges, who included leaders in sexual health, art and design, local media and local politics. Toronto Public Health promotes and distributes condoms to community agencies and health organizations across the city as part of its sexual health promotion mandate. Condoms are one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies and have been available at Toronto Public Health sexual health clinics since 1983.

Tropicana hosts event for young Toronto men of colour Tropicana Community Services hosting conference

Sign up for our newsletter insidetoronto.com/newsletter

November may be Men's Health Month, but for men and male youth of colour in Toronto, things aren't that simple. That's why Afro-Canadian and Caribbean-Canadian males from across the city are invited to Scarborough on Nov. 19 - International Men's Day - for a conference on young men's health and wellness. During the Saturday event, participants from ages 13 to 29 can discuss issues they encounter on the way to young adulthood.

People from several Toronto organizations will be listening, "not talking at them but talking with them," Marcus McLean, special events coordinator for Tropicana Community Services, said this week. Other groups backing the event, which is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., are Young Potential Fathers, Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention, WoodGreen Community Services' Rites of Passage, Farley Flex from the antiviolence campaign Just Think 1st, TAIBU Community Health Centre,

and Zero Gun Violence. The conference broadens the work of Tropicana's Man Up program, which helps male youth 14 to 18 "release some hot air and frustration," while learning to look at themselves, said co-ordinator Jason Yorke-Best. The event at Tropicana's Centre of Excellence on Scarborough's Huntingwood Drive also covers financial literacy and how masculinity and fatherhood are shown in media, McLean said.

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background.

insidetoronto.com

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

Hair cells in the ear move very rapidly and can act as an amplifier or dampener. If these cells are damaged, they can no longer properly amplify speech and dampen loud noises. amplified in the ear and loud sounds no longer dampened. This leads to more difficulty in hearing what is said in a lot of situations.
