The province, however, has not offered money to cover the one-time cost of the mergers, leading some to worry the merged hospitals will be forced to make cuts in services. Being cut from his Grade 7 soccer team was one of the best things that ever happened to Sevion DaCosta. The next year, he decided to try football instead. Fast forward five years and DaCosta is one of Canada’s top 100 football prospects for 2017. “I was ecstatic,” DaCosta said of learning he made the Canada Football Chat list, via a text from
a friend. “When I started playing football, I just really enjoyed it, just hanging out with friends, going to practice and everything. I never thought it would come to a stage where I was being recruited and I was looked at as one of the top prospects in Canada,” he added. “It kind of just gave a lot of satisfaction for all the hard work that I put in over the summers, and in class, and kind of everything >>>DACOSTA, page 28

Procreation problem solvers get a little wild The reproductive physiology unit at the Toronto Zoo helps animals make babies Fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com For two years, the female patient suffered from irregular menstrual cycles. Doctors were about to explore assisted fertility options when she became pregnant on her own. In another case, fertility specialists were stumped as to why another female patient could not conceive - until a recording of rain shower sounds was enough to get her in the mood and get the job done naturally. Those treated by Dr. Gabriela Mastromonaco aren’t your typical patients seeking reproductive assistance. T h e y a re h o u s e d i n Scarborough’s Toronto Zoo, specifically selected for artificial insemination in hopes of producing offspring to keep the numbers of their species up and, if possible, releasing these animals back into their natural habitats. According to the Toronto Zoo, it’s the only Canadian zoo with a reproductive physiologist on staff. Located within the Animal Health Centre, the reproductive physiology unit is made up of two laboratories, the endocrinology lab and gamete biology lab, where staff, students and visiting scientists work together to investigate fundamental problems related to reproduction in non-domestic species. The goal is to assist with the care and management of captive and free-ranging populations in an effort to maintain reproductive health and ensure the preservation of genetic diversity. Mastromonaco, curator
Ryan Pfieffer/METROLAND
of the Meadowvale Road and Old Finch Avenue zoo’s reproductive programs and research, said it’s always preferred for animals to breed on their own, but for a number of reasons - some known, some not - that might be easier said than done. There could be behavioural or medical issues at play, or lack of a male paramour, in which case semen would have to be flown in. Very much similar to fertility testing humans go through, animal hormones are tested in a lab to look for abnormalities, cycles are monitored, and semen is collected to freeze for insemination, Mastromonaco said, adding she works with more than 50 species a year. And like humans, animals can go on birth control pills the same women would use - if the zoo isn’t trying to breed a particular species, she said, adding the gorillas are currently on contraception. The Toronto Zoo’s reproductive program, which began in 1988 (prior to this

all breeding was done naturally), lends its support to other zoos, primarily within Canada, Mastromonaco said. The zoo’s animals typically try to conceive on their own for two to three years before Mastromonaco and her team step in, who will then evaluate “why babies aren’t coming,” she said. Pinpointing fertility treatment and what works and what doesn’t is still something Mastromonaco is figuring
out. An Indian rhino calf lost a pregnancy because she didn’t have enough progesterone to sustain it. Cheetahs have undergone treatment for five or six years without producing offspring. Come next year, the reproductive program currently housed in two rooms inside a 40-year-old building will move into a state-of-theart facility, which will allow Mastromonaco and her staff more research equipment
and space to house and transfer animals more easily, she said, adding the old site will be used as a curatorial lab. Bison insemination is the next “big project.” The cost of artificially inseminating an animal is $500 to $600 a try, with invitro fertilization running $3,000 to $4,000 a pop. But, with certain species dangerously close to extinction, such as the Grevy’s zebra, “you can’t put a price” on reproduction, she said.
Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue act like typical twins: teasing each other, play fighting, and competing for mom’s attention. Except these twins walk on all fours, are black and white, and will eventually munch on bamboo, their food of choice. Born at the Toronto Zoo Oct. 13, 2015, the giant panda cubs are still very much a crowd favourite, with visitors lining up for hours to catch of glimpse of them and their mother, Er Shun. Da Mao, one of three potential fathers, is housed in a separate enclosure. The first giant panda cubs born in Canada, Jia Panpan (Canadian hope), and his sister, Jia Yueyue (Canadian joy), are still bottle fed, although they like to chew on bamboo, said giant panda zoo keeper Emily Noel of Mitchell’s Corners, Ontario. Weighing in at 20.5 pounds, Jia Panpan is the more active of the two. Jia Yueyue weighs 16.5 pounds.

Baby animals at the zoo signify reproductive win
WRitE uS
E
veryone loves baby animals. Visitors have flocked to see the brand new additions to the Toronto Zoo, which include Juno the polar bear cub, Rey the zebra filly, and arguably the most popular, the panda bear cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue who recently celebrated their first birthday. While seeing the cute baby animals are worth the price of admission, what’s equally impressive is the work that goes behind the scenes to bring these animals to life - literally. The special report this week explores the fascinating world of Dr. Gabriela Mastromonaco, curator of the Toronto Zoo’s reproductive programs and research. OuR ViEW She along with her team and visiting scientists work together Work helps to investigate problems related reproduction in non-domestic to conserve to species. It’s always preferred for animals species to breed on their own, notes Mastromonaco, but sometimes there are behavioural or medical issues at play. Other times, it’s a lack of a suitable partner that prevent mating to occur, in which case semen that is collected to freeze for insemination might have to be flown in. The problem could also lie in not creating the right environment or mood for animals to procreate. Mastromonaco, who works with more than 50 species a year, admits though trying to figure out exactly which fertility treatments work and which ones don’t is still an ongoing challenge. But whatever the issue a particular species might have, the Toronto Zoo’s goal is to assist with the care and management of both captive and free-ranging populations in an effort to maintain reproductive health and ensure the preservation of genetic diversity. In other words, the zoo hopes to produce offspring to keep the numbers of endangered and vulnerable species up. That includes the polar bear, the Indian rhinoceros, cheetah and giant panda, to name a few, as listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, an international organization focused in the field of nature conservation.

column
What to call the young Leafs line? I need your help loyal readers. The reason I’m reaching out is that I have a funny feeling that the Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Zach Hyman trio is going to end up getting dubbed “The Kid Line.” It’s not that it isn’t a catchy phrase. It is. Or isn’t a fitting phrase. It’s that, too. Very much so. The problem is, it’s not original. There already was a Kid Line. On your very own Maple Leafs, in fact. From 1929 1936. The line consisted of centre Joe Primeau, in between right winger Charlie Conacher and left winger Harvey “Busher” Jackson, all of whom are in the Hockey Hall of Fame. I remember that line like it was yesterday. No, not because I was around back then, smarty pants. That was way before my time. Yes, way. Very way. How way is besides the point. I only remember it like
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY it was yesterday because it was yesterday that I made a point of going back and looking up The Kid Line’s bios again. What prompted me to do that was seeing all three grace the Top 100 Maple Leafs list of all time that was introduced during that special centennial celebration at the Air Canada Centre before the opening home game last Saturday night. I seemed to recall that they were even younger than the current young troika but I wanted to make absolutely sure. It turns out I was right. When it comes to kids being kids, they indeed were more junior than today’s group. Primeau was only 23, and Conacher and Jackson were both just 18 when they all first hit the ice together.
Meanwhile, left-winger Hyman is 24, right-winger Nylander is 20 and centre Matthews is 19. There have been a few more Kid Lines since then in the NHL, but the name only caught on with the fans of the teams they played on. There is only one real Kid Line. Primeau, Conacher and Jackson. So no Kid Line 2, OK? Or Kid Line II. Over to you. The ball is in your court. If you can say that when talking about hockey. But you better get the lead out. Or the ink out, if you’re using a pen instead of a pencil to come up with a name. There’s no way of knowing how long Matthews, Nylander and Hyman will remain a unit. Coaches typically like to experiment with different combinations in order to keep the players from getting complacent or having them get comfortable with a bunch of players, but also to give
the team different looks to keep the opposition off guard. They could each have two different linemates if you wait too long. A unique name is a must. Matthews, Nylander and Hyman deserve a handle created just for them. With that in mind, that means ixnay to The New Kids On The Block, which I fear is likely running a close second to Kid Line. Not just because it is also associated with another group, but more importantly the New Kids On The Block aren’t kids anymore. They’re all pushing 40-something. What’s more, it’s probably been a while since they’ve been anywhere near the block, let alone on it. They’re likely everywhere but on the block when you get right down to it. The saying, “focus on the marriage, not the wedding”, has never been truer as depicted in the Scarborough Player’s first show of the season, Barefoot in the Park, by Neil Simon. An entertaining, hilarious comedy, the audience is welcomed into the world of newlyweds Corie and Paul (Tamara Freeman, Will van der Zyl), who are trying to find the balance between a relationship taking work, but not being a full-time job that they both hate. Set in the1960’s in New York City, in the couple’s topfloor Brownstone, it quickly becomes apparent that the time and place are irrelevant considering their struggles and issues apply to everyone going through the adjustment of being in a new marriage. Paul is a lawyer who has just been called to the bar and has to work long hours, and Corie is the stay-at-home wife. Naturally, she quickly becomes bored being home alone, and decides to focus on a new project, setting her mother, Ethel (Erin Jones), up with their over-the-top neighbour, Victor Velasco (Rob Schock). Corie is vibrant, energetic and loves life, similar to Victor, who loves to make ethnic foods, and feels life is an ongoing adventure. In contrast to them, Paul is responsible and sensible, and, like Ethel, a tad reserved and quiet. This clash of personalities makes for some hilarious scenarios, and soon it becomes the sensible versus the eccentric, as Paul and Ethel can’t keep up with the carefree, late nights that Corie and Victor enjoy. One evening, the foursome decide to dine out at an Armenian restaurant, and while Victor and Corie come back happy and drunk on ouzo, Paul and Ethel are

exhausted and just want to go to bed. When Victor offers to escort an apprehensive Ethel home and Corie encourages it, Paul makes a comment about how he can’t believe Corie would do that to her own mother. This statement leads to an epic argument and, unbelievably, talk of divorce. Corie thinks Paul is a stuffed shirt and boring, and Paul thinks Corie is too flighty and overly dramatic. It’s easy for opposites to fall in love, but can they accept each other for a lifetime? Regardless of the outcome, the ride to the conclusion in this show is amazing to watch. What is the most enjoyable about this show is that the entire cast is funny. Even the telephone and delivery men (Lyndon Johnson and Anthony Jones), while their scenes are few, bring levity and laughter whenever they are on stage. Freeman makes a superb Scarborough Players debut as the high on life and love,
Corie. Her performance is funny, energetic and lively, especially with Schock, who plays Victor with a wonderful energy and humour. The two of them truly brighten up the stage throughout the show. Jones has a natural comedic talent, and while her comedy is more subtle, she succeeds in bringing humour and life into what otherwise could be a lacklustre character. Van der Zyl is great, both in the everyday life scenes and in his explosive arguing scenes. He is the right balance of tolerant yet firm and fantastically funny in his role. This relationship sliceof-life show is funny and entertaining, and makes for an ideal night out at the theatre. Barefoot in the Park runs until Oct. 22, 8 p.m., at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. Tickets are $22 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 416-267-9292 or by visiting http://theatrescarborough. com/home-boxoffice.php

When the thermometer dips below 7 degrees it’s time to change those all-seasons for winter tires. Winter tires are not only for snow and ice traction, they are also for optimum cold weather traction as well. “We recommend using winter tires throughout the cold months, middle of October to the end of April,” says Shant Ghazarian, owner and general manager of Goodyear Mars Tire and Auto Service. “To promote safe driving on our roads, every year around mid-october we have a parking lot sale with the lowest prices guaranteed. This year we will be celebrating our 17th parking lot event at Bridlewood Mall.” This sale is supported by Goodyear head office, where shoppers can find all sizes and types of tires at wholesale prices. The sale runs this weekend from Thursday to Sunday. Shoppers can have the tires
installed at the shop, or take them to their regular mechanic or dealer. If the tires aren’t in stock, it will be ordered and customers can pick them up at Mars Tire and Auto Service at 3805 Sheppard Ave. E. “Our location is ready for the busy winter tire season with extra staff to minimize customer waiting time” he confesses. “Apart from tires and tire installation, we offer complete automotive services from alignment
to mechanical services such as oil change, battery replacement, engine and muffler repairs.” Ghazarian recommends the Goodyear Dunlop and Kelly brand tires for the ultimate safety, handling and performance throughout the winter months. Goodyear Mars Tire and Auto Service is located at 3805 Sheppard Ave. E. in Scarborough. For more details, call (416) 292-6113 or visit www.fixmycar.ca

Manufacturing in Scarborough is alive, well and competing world- wide, career fair hears Mike Adler madler@insidetoronto.com
service around the world. Scarborough, a Toronto suburb once known for manufacturing centres such as Eglinton Avenue’s Golden Mile, was hard-hit over the past few decades by losses in industry. But though manufacturing and technology now accounts for only 125,000, or nine per cent, of jobs across Toronto, it’s doing well, including in Scarborough, said Michael Thompson, a local councillor. Thompson, also the city’s economic development chairperson, said he formed the Toronto East Manufacturing and Technology Roundtable this year to fight the impression Scarborough’s manufacturing is still in decline. “I’m talking Scarborough proud, because that’s the only way we will succeed,” he told younger attendees at the fair
They can tell you which direction a bullet was fired from, take your picture, monitor Uber drivers, give you free WiFi, and count nearby available parking spots. Plus a lot of other things. They are outdoor smart displays, designed, tested, and built in Scarborough, Ontario. New York City just bought 8,500 of them. “Anything imaginable can go in here,” Justin Idems, a technical services manager for CIVIQ SmartScapes, said at a career fair showcasing manufacturing and technology companies in Scarborough. Idems is the son of Ralph Idems, who founded a local company, Vertigo Digital Displays, which developed the displays, “smart city” technology he said is going into
in the Scarborough Civic Centre rotunda on Thursday, Oct. 13. Ralph Idems said Canadian manufacturing has a good reputation around the world. Vertigo couldn’t get the capital it needed in Canada and was bought in May by CIVIQ, a U.S. company, but as a CIVIQ representative, Idems said he now travels to overseas cities which have bought his technology. Scarborough is still the centre of the “smart city” universe, he told people at the fair. “If you think manufacturing is dull, then you haven’t been out of Canada.” FTG Circuits, a member of the roundtable, makes printer circuit boards in Scarborough for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, an aircraft so popular it has a seven-year order backlog. “We are committed in

Scarborough, we are growing in Scarborough, and we are investing in Scarborough,” said Hitesh Taladi, FTG’s general manager, adding he is always looking for young engineers and technicians.
A $5-million interestfree loan from the province in 2009 helped FTG get its Dreamliner contract, but Jocelyn Williams, representing another Scarborough manufacturer, Automatic Coating
Limited, said bad government policy is her company’s “biggest fear.” Automatic Coating Limited rehabilitates pipelines and rustproofs U.S. Navy ships, but its electricity costs have soared, said Williams. Every week, she told city councillors from Scarborough, she’s contacted by Americans offering to move the company to the U.S. “If we’re not strong, where are your children and your grandchildren going to work?” she asked them. On the bright side, the average manufacturing wage here “far exceeds other sectors,” and such work offers a particularly good career for women, Williams said. “One of the fastest ways to close the wage gap (with men) is to go into non-traditional jobs,” suggested Williams, co-chairperson of the roundtable.

Some had even been told they were past the point of help, but The Hearing Clinic, now it its 32nd year, has the skills and experience to help just about anyone. “We invite people who have purchased hearing aids elsewhere who are not hearing as well as they would like to be, to make an appointment, we would love to help,” says Terry Lewis, doctor of audiology at The Hearing Clinic. Even after you have purchased a new hearing aid, check-ups and follow-up service are free of charge at The Hearing Clinic. The professional staff at The Hearing Clinics put their clients’ needs first, and provide many services without extra fees. It’s no wonder they have won the gold Readers’ Choice Award for more than 10 years in a row. The Hearing Clinic has two locations in Scarborough at 2636 Eglinton Ave. E. (416-266-8300) and Suite 208, 3030 Lawrence Ave. E. (416-289-2021). For more information or to book a free demo appointment call or visit www.thehearingclinic.ca

My husband lost his job. We fell behind on our mortgage. The bank was seizing our home. I still can’t believe that you gave us an emergency mortgage with no proof of income. You saved our home & gave us extra cash to get by until he finds another job. Thanks! C.J. Ask her about: COMMERCIAL - FARM - CONSTRUCTION

Transform your spaces into cosy retreats Cool weather often drives people to spend more hours indoors than they do during the warmer months. Autumn is a time to winterize gardens, put away lawn furniture and prepare for the holiday season. Autumn also provides the perfect opportunity to begin home interior projects. Many people decide to redecorate their homes to reflect each season. When temperatures change, it’s time to transition from the light colours and breezy fabrics symbolic of summer to thicker, darker materials that evoke coziness. With some inspiration and a little know-how, any homeowner or apartment dweller can cosy up a space in time for fall and winter. • Invest in area rugs. While wood floors can look beautiful and work well with many different design styles, wood can feel chilly underfoot. Thick area rugs add warmth to a room and can help it look more lived-in. Area rugs also help a room appear more cohesive, coordinating with other colours in a space and providing a visual border. • Practice layering in rooms. An affordable and relatively easy way to make a room seem more cosy is to layer fabrics and other accents. Layers can include throws and blankets. Remove place mats from the dining room table and use them on accent tables or an ottoman in the living room. Table runners also can add a splash of colour to the top of bedroom dressers. • Play with texture. Look for fabrics that boast texture and can add a tactile feel to spaces. When used on throw pillows or small accents, faux fur
can create that cosy cabin feel. Draperies made from nubby fabrics or those with grooves and ridges can add dimension to a room as well. Even a lampshade made of an unusual fabric, such as a waffle-patterned material, can add a little depth and warmth to a space. • Reevaluate your lighting. Lighting a space is
more than just flipping on a switch. Finding the right balance of lighting fixtures can instantly transform the feel of a room. Create more warmth and a cosy feel by switching out bulbs from cooler shades to warmer ones - those that give off yellow and pink hues rather than cool blues. Accent lighting helps establish a comfortable
space for curling up and reading a good book. Spot lighting, such as fixtures that are trained on artwork or inside of a curio or china cabinet, also can set a more welcoming mood. • Install a bookshelf and start a book collection. Piles and stacked books can add warmth to any space. Books evoke the hallowed halls of schools and quiet nooks in the library. Fill shelves with books interspersed with additional design accents, and you will instantly make a room feel more inviting. • Choose dark paint. Do not feel nervous about incorporating deeper shades in rooms. Dark colours give rooms a more enclosed feel than lighter colours, and that can create a warm and cosy feeling. This works particularly well in larger spaces that feel vast and empty. If you’re scared to paint all of your walls, try only using a darker shade below a chair rail or just paint one accent wall. • Add architectural elements. Think about adding rich mouldings to crown the ceilings or to frame doorways. If you have the space for a nook, create a window seat beneath a picture window or add a bench and cushions in a corner for a nice escape spot. Use the colder weather as an opportunity to reinvent some of the rooms in your home. With paint, texture, fabric, lighting, and more, rooms can be quickly transformed into cosy respites from the cold.

Dying in a place that feels like home Mike Adler madler@insidetoronto.com Starting next week, patients at Providence Healthcare’s new Palliative Care Unit can die in a place built carefully to feel like home. Their dog can stay with them. Their loved ones can sleep, eat, shower, launder clothes and even host business meetings there. “If we don’t take care of the caregivers, they can’t take care of their loved ones,” explains Providence CEO Josie Walsh. The new wing in the rehabilitation hospital at St. Clair and Warden avenues comes with two suites where family members can sleep, whether that’s at midnight or noon. There’s also a business centre with four glassed-in offices. The average stay for a palliative care patient is 30 days, and Walsh said family members often come with

the continuing pressures of work, stressed about having to choose between that and the person who’s dying. Being with a palliative patient can be a long, exhausting commitment, and for caregivers life, even business, must go on. “You still have to register your child for swimming lessons,” Walsh added during a recent tour. And if patients, after getting to the new wing, decide they want to go home, Providence can send them there, with the appropriate help, she said. The hospital’s main building opened in 1962, and the present palliative wing, just off the main lobby, shows its age, with traditional hospital walls, ceilings, and floor tiles. When Providence decided in 2010 to renovate a new palliative space, it sent a task force around Greater Toronto and beyond to look at best practices. Its members spoke to families, patients and staff.
patient floor fold into a bed so caregivers can sleep beside a patient. Construction started in December 2015 with funds from private donors, including $1 million from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto. The Sisters of St. Joseph sponsored the first-floor living room, which has a children’s area with playsets and a mural on one wall painted by Thelma Horwitz, a Providence employee, and her two 10-year-old sons. The first House of Providence opened in what is now downtown Toronto in 1857 to care of the dying as well as the poor, widows and orphans. Walsh said two sisters of the order who started Providence’s first formalized palliative unit in 1982 were at the unit’s opening celebrations on Oct. 12. They asked lots of questions, “and they were proud,” she said.

Brock Doors & Windows completes $25,000 home makeover for winner On Saturday Oct. 15, Brock Doors and Windows completed the $25,000 home transformation for their sweepstakes winners. Ilmars and Debra Krievins won the $25,000 Window Door and More contest via a random draw nearly one year ago. The couple was away on vacation when the draw took place, and returned home to a great surprise. Brock Doors and Windows installed brand new windows, alongside a beautiful front door system
and patio door for the lucky winning couple. “We have been transforming homes in the GTA for over 26 years, we only just began this draw two years ago; with the idea of giving back to the community that has kept us in business for so many years.” says Reputation Manager Steavi Potter. The next draw will take place in May 2017. You can enter the contest online at www.brockwindows.com/sweepstakes.

Ontario Health Coalition hosting forum this Saturday
Toronto’s giant pandas turn one
>>>from page 1 Employees Union (OPSEU) hope to get communities in both regions “up in arms” and stop the mergers through public pressure. “We’ve put things on hold before,” OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas said in an interview Tuesday. Forming a new hospital in Scarborough will cost $20 million, and adding RVHS Ajax-Pickering to Lakeridge requires $13 million; savings will be “minimal,” the hospitals have said. Past mergers have resulted in cuts to frontline staff and services, Thomas said, arguing the hospitals should hold meetings with the public to answer merger questions. “They’ve got to demonstrate that it makes sense and that it’s good for health care.” T h e O n t a r i o He a l t h Coalition, hosting a forum on the mergers at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 22 in the Bendale Public Library on Danforth Road, is voicing

similar arguments. Hoskins’ order follows recommendations from an expert panel, which said the mergers were needed to plan for future hospital infrastructure projects in Scarborough.
“
They’ve got to demonstrate that it makes sense and that it’s good for health care. – Warren Thomas, oPSeU president
The minister’s order means a vote of RVHS members to approve the mergers, required by Rouge Valley’s bylaws, is no longer needed. A planned meeting for this at the Centenary on Thursday, Oct. 20 will instead be an information session for members. The order triggers 30 days of public consultation, ending on November 14. People can comment on the mergers by email at communityfeedback@ ontario.ca.
Our babies are growing up. Canada’s first giant panda cubs celebrated their first birthday at the Toronto Zoo Thursday, Oct. 13. “ The Toronto Zoo is thrilled to be hosting this one-year birthday celebration for our giant panda cubs,” said John Tracogna, Toronto Zoo CEO. “We are grateful to all of the partners who continue to support the ongoing success of our giant panda program, including the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Pandas, Chongqing Zoo, State Forestry Administration of China and the Canadian Embassy in Beijing.” Zoo staff, VIPs from China and members of the media gathered at the zoo to celebrate the cubs’ milestone birthday. Cubs Jia Panpan (Canadian Hope) and Jia Yueyue (Canadian Joy) had

their enclosure decorated for the occasion. Other Toronto Zoo babies came out for the party, with painted cut-outs of the animals placed throughout the giant panda exhibit, along with gift boxes containing traditional Chinese fortunes of happiness,
prosperity, wealth and lots of bamboo. Female cub Jia Yueyue chose a gift of wealth, while male cub Jia Panpan went for lots of bamboo. The cubs have changed a lot during their first year, since entering the world as pink infants weighing less
than 200 grams. “When they’re born, they’re just kind of like these squawking blobs, and they stay kind of that way for a while, and then when they became mobile, you really started seeing their personalities,” said Maria Franke, Toronto Zoo curator of mammals. “Yueyue, she’s a lot more independent, she’s like go, go, go, exploring, exploring. Whereas Panpan’s very much mama’s boy, he kind of is always where Er Shun is.” The twins have taken well to their roles as brother and sister as well. “They get along really well,” shared Franke. “I think there’s also an element of annoyance, it’s the big brother beating up on the little sister, but that’s kind of changing now, because Yueyue’s getting a lot bigger. She’s starting to eat more solid foods, gain more weight, so he better watch out. She’s going to start beating back up on him.”

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Young people now have six places in Toronto where help with their mental health requires no fee, appointment or even a health card. Children and youth in the city, perhaps one in every fi ve, struggle with serious mental health disorders, but usually face long waits and inconvenient scheduling when they turn to professionals for help. Increasing funding for a group of walk-in clinics, now called “What’s up walk-ins, by $724,000 each year has allowed the province to open new locations this year in South Scarborough and the Jane and Finch area of North York.
That’s in addition to others in mid-Scarborough, downtown Toronto, Etobicoke, and the former City of York. Open five days a week, the walk-in clinics serve children and youth of any age up to 24, and will also see members of their families, and can deliver help in several languages. Significantly, they aim to see patients in less than 20 minutes. “We often deal with kids that are a risk to themselves or others, David O’Brien, lead agency network manager for the clinics, and clinical services supervisor at East Metro Youth Services (EMYS), where the original “What’s up opened in 2011, said this week. “If they’re not getting help
right away, it can put their lives in danger. Celebrating the expansion was Janice, an East York resident whose 21-year-old grandson has fought anxiety and depression since his early teens. “He has struggled to find help because the format of many programs are too rigid for his lifestyle and the support he requires, she said in a release, adding the “What’s up program is unique in allowing young people to seek treatment on their own terms. “I am so grateful for the helping hand they have provided me, while I am providing a helping hand to him. For more information and clinic locations, visit http:// www.whatsupwalkin.ca/

back, but with my size they put me at defensive end,” he explained. “What I kind of pride myself on defense is being the quarterback of the defense. I know where everyone has to be, so if anyone has a question they can come to me.” DaCosta also played linebacker for the Toronto Thunder, where he was captain of the team and called many of its defensive plays. “On the football field, I’m very aggressive, but also very smart,” he noted. “One of the things my coaches have said to me is that I always know all of my plays. I’m always watching a lot of film, and I’m always prepared for what the offense is going to run against us, and I can always change our defense to match up with their offense.” DaCosta and his UCC varsity football teammates are hoping to end their year with a four-peat. The team has won the CISAA championship three years running, and is training hard to make it four. On top of a packed football and school schedule, DaCosta leads and participates in many school groups, including the mock trial club he founded, and plays on the rugby team, which he has captained twice. He also volunteers his time to train younger students and be an ambassador for his school, where he was elected head steward and has a 4.1 grade point average. Blair Sharpe, DaCosta’s house advisor, and former teacher and rugby coach, said DaCosta is one of the nicest and most polite people there is. “Words can’t do justice as to how much Sevion means to the entire school community,” said Sharpe. “He is hard working, happy and unabashedly positive, and whenever you see him, he will be wearing his everpresent, million-dollar smile.” Asked where he finds the time to do so much, DaCosta laughed and said he hears that a lot.

Scarborough resident and Upper Canada College student Sevion DaCosta, 17, was recently ranked as one of Canada's top 100 football prospects for 2017.
“I t h i n k b e i n g w e l l rounded is essential to your growth not only as a student, but as a person. I try to get involved in as many personal interests that I can,” he said. “I just love everything that the school has given me, so I try to give back the most that I can.”
“
Always be adaptable and flexible to different situations. Because personally for me, if I didn’t get cut from the soccer team in Grade 7, I probably wouldn’t even be playing football now. – Sevion DaCosta
DaCosta is a Lang Scholar, a scholarship program founded by former UCC student Stu Lang to support distinguished student-athletes at the school. A former Canadian Football League player and five-time Grey Cup champion, as well as a successful businessman, Lang meets with his scholars throughout the year. Being part of
Lang’s legacy is a special and inspiring opportunity, said DaCosta. Along with Lang, he looks up to New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady. A sixth-round draft pick, Brady worked hard to achieve his dream of being a starting NFL quarterback, something DaCosta admires. His biggest inspiration, though, is his mom, who always pushes him to be the best he can be on and off the field. “She’s always supporting me, and she knows a lot about football,” he shared. “If I do something in a game, on the car ride home she’s telling me about it. She really helps me improve as a football player.” To his fellow Scarborough youths, DaCosta said stay positive. “Always be adaptable and flexible to different situations. Because personally for me, if I didn’t get cut from the soccer team in Grade 7, I probably wouldn’t even be playing football now. And football wouldn’t be a way for me to pay for my postsecondary education,” he said. “Always strive for greatness and to follow your dreams.”

Professional cynics aren’t helpful, must be challenged “By their fruits ye shall know them.” - Matthew 7:16 Wise words - whether you are readily swayed by Biblical classics or not. Christianity aside, I’m pointing to people I call professional snivellers and cynics. Their accomplishments? Alarmingly little of consequence - yet that never prevents them from pontificating on topics they are far from expert in. They offer nothing but disparaging words and complaints. They occupy that mud-grey, slushy area between honest public service and hands-on, concrete city-building (two truly lush, fruit-tree extravaganzas). Bluntly speaking, they are rotting trees bearing no good fruit. Beware. I encounter these sputtering civic critics regularly on Twitter; in some downtowncentered media and blogs; in comments under news stories. They are residents who are scorn-filled, often profane, unproductive - but bold. They are both anonymous and frightfully prominent. They are the ‘progressives’,
helen stratigos gems of scarborough
for example, who had not one bone of empathy for the late Rob Ford or his family when he died. Who dismissed the concerns of those who voted for him? They are snide toward suburban councillors who bring forth questions about rising rates, safety, and inclusion. Who lead a pied-piper chorus of sustained naysaying about not only Mayor John Tory’s subway plan, but also about his SmartTrack proposal - an efficient scheme to increase higher-order transit sooner for commuters living in the newer rings of Toronto (like us). The idea of maximizing the use of our already-built GO train tracks makes sense - but the predictable pile-on discouragement by these culprits is disheartening. Luckily for us, though, Mr. Tory fights to get it done. These so-called ‘urbanists’ and their angry rants did nothing to compel Toronto City Council to sup-
port the extensive LRT plan - now cancelled. If these maddening old-city types were on the fringes, yelling demeaning smears about Torontonians living beyond downtown, we’d dismiss them as harmless. But unfortunately, more of these negative people are in direct contact with influential editors at established news media, are in geographic proximity to the “hotbed” of the city, are opining on broadcasts in place of residents more knowledgeable about a community or an issue, but who lack the right “connections”. There are many worthy voices who don’t have a powerful platform to represent their communities because they are not part of the ‘hive-mind’ inner circles. Voices drowning out and intimidating the rest must be confronted and corrected with facts and our lived experiences. Religiously.

Short trips being made by car: report A new report suggests 716,000 short car trips across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) could be made by bicycle instead. C o - a u t h o re d by t h e Toronto Centre for Active Transportation and Ryerson University the report analyzes current regional cycling trends. It finds of the 14 million trips taken every day in the GTHA, the vast majority are less than five kilometres, but only six per cent of such trips are made walking or cycling. The report argues that number can only improve with more infrastructure and improved options for “last mile” transportation to or from a transit station.
taxi drivers, teaching them about Toronto geography, customer service and other driver skills. With recent changes to taxi licensing regulations, resulting in the legalization of ride-sharing services like UberX, the multi-day training program at the city was scrapped to the chagrin of the taxi industry, which promised its own version. Taught through the college, the 25-hour weekly course also includes an emphasis on defensive driving.

TTC subway buskers will be a little more prominent in the stations thanks the establishment of designated performance zones. The zones have been established on a temporary basis at Bloor-Yonge, Finch and Spadina and Main Street

It’s the first time according to the TTC any move has been made to spotlight its subway performers, and if it proves a success, the zones could appear at more stations.
