Take back the night march set for Friday MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com For the first time in years this Friday, women and children will be taking back the night in Malvern. A rally, information fair and march around the neighbourhood are part of a year-long community project on violence against women, said Cathy Mwanza, manager of Women’s Place at the Malvern Family Resource Centre. Friday’s event, outside the TAIBU Community Health Centre at Tapscott and Nielson roads, is happening so women can speak out against violence and “how they want to feel safe when they’re out walk-

ing,” Mwanza said in an interview this week. The rally runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at TAIBU, which is on the Malvern Town Centre property, at Neilson and Tapscott roads. It will be preceded by a community fair, starting at 4:30 p.m., at which several agencies will offer information. “We’ve been encouraging women to come together and learn more,” said Mwanza. She added she hopes women and children from all parts of Scarborough will attend. The event will end with a march around the Malvern neighbourhood taking place from 8 to 9 p.m.
Public input sought on Maywood Park MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Maywood Park in southwest Scarborough is due for a “complete upgrade” and area residents are invited to choose the playground equipment they want there, Councillor Michelle Berardinetti says. Improvements to the neighbourhood park, on a street with the same name just north of Pine Hills Cemetery, will be made next year.

“Given that we do not have many of the amenities in other parts of Toronto such as the beach, boardwalk, museum or theatre places, our parks become a focal point in our personal time in our particular ward,” Berardinetti said in a message this week. Residents are being called next Thursday, Sept. 13, to discuss the possible plans for the park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Don Montgomery Community Centre on Eglinton Avenue East.
