ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Members of the Jewish community stood guard outside several Toronto-area mosques during midday prayers last Friday as a show of solidarity following the Jan. 29 mass shooting at a Quebec City mosque. "Their pain is our pain too," said Rabbi Jarrod Grover, who came out to the Islamic Foundation of Toronto mosque on Nugget Avenue in Scarborough. "These people are our friends. You attack them, you attack all of us. We’re going to stand in solidarity with them." Jewish community members also formed a "ring of peace" around some other mosques.Rabbi
Yael Splansky of Holy Blossom Temple initiated the action, prompted by a memory of the multi-faith human chain that was formed around a synagogue in Oslo after it was attacked two years ago. Hundreds of people from several synagogues and two churches took part in the goodwill initiative at seven GTA mosques Friday.Splansky said she hopes that the people who are praying inside "will feel protected and cared about and that their grief might be softened somehow by our presence."She added that she hopes the initiative will also establish and build relationships with the Muslim community. Grover, of Beth Tikvah Synagogue, said this is a time of "great unease" in

"The best thing we can do to combat their feeling that this is not a toler-
ant, accepting society is to show them that we are." Imam Yusuf Badat of the Islamic Foundation of Toronto welcomed the "kind gesture.""They are our brothers and sisters. They are standing with us," he
said. "It’s definitely very heartening. It makes me proud as a Canadian, as a Muslim, as a human being that we have such wonderful souls within our communities that understand and are there to give their
helping hand." Rabbi Adam Cutler of Beth Tzedec Congregation said he came to IFT to show support and sympathy for the Muslim community."What happened in Quebec City was an atrocity, and it’s something that all religious communities need to stand up and fight against," he said. "It is absolutely a Jewish value to love your neighbour, to fight against intolerance and hate, and a way to do that is to stand shoulder to shoulder with communities who are feeling at risk and who are feeling fearful." High school teacher Omar Essawi said it was "touching" to see the Jewish community outside IFT."This honestly means the world to us," he added.

Memorial bench honours woman killed by drunk driver City staff argued against donation, but councillors accepted MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com A granite bench in memory of a mother killed by a drunk driver will soon stand near the main entrance to a Scarborough park. But this tribute to Yan Zhang - made possible by a local cemetery’s generosity - wasn’t initially welcomed by city staff. Staff didn’t want the bench to be in McCowan District Park because it’s
"non-standard," which refers to additional costs for installation, maintenance and future repairs. On Jan. 27, however, the city moved the bench from Resthaven Gardens to a works yard where it will be stored until its placement. Zhang, 36, visited the park in 2007 with her son, Hong Yi Liang, who was three. They flew a kite, then started for home, walking along McCowan Road. North of Eglinton Avenue, a minivan came up on the sidewalk, struck them both, and dragged Zhang along the road. She died. Her son received extensive injuries. The minivan’s driver pled guilty to impaired driving causing death and

ing, members of Scarborough Community Council accepted the donation, even though a staff report had effectively recommended against it. The Parks, Forestry and Recreation department said Toronto offers a commemorative tree and bench program, one the report said supporters of a memorial should use. The preferred bench location was also a problem, it said, as the park’s main entrance "has a new large horticultural display." Gary Crawford, the local councillor, said he hopes the bench can be installed this spring, and he’ll look somewhere other than tax money to cover the estimated $1,000 in related costs.

Last summer, after speaking to local resident Mary McIntyre Rafter, an employee at Arbour Memorial’s Resthaven Memorial Gardens on Kingston Road approached Ray Layno, her branch manager, for a donation. There were benches at the cemetery office available for purchase and, "without hesitation," Layno decided to give one to the city in honour of Zhang. ABOUT US
Black History Month offers window into Canada’s past Toronto was the first municipality in Canada to proclaim February as Black History Month; a month dedicated to commemorating the contributions of AfricanCanadians to our culture and community. That was 38 years ago. It was because of the diligent pressure and persistence of the Ontario Black History Society which succeeded in having the city formally recognize the month - and now it’s proclaimed right across the country. Black History Month is, frankly, Canadian History Month and it’s important we know the compelling facts of our heritage. African-Canadians have struggled for equal opportunity and freedom from discrimination for far too many years. It began with the anti-slavery movement and evolved into the fight for basic civil and human rights. African-Canadian leaders of that time led with courage and determination. They include people like Viola Davis Desmond, a Halifax-born business woman. It was 1946 when she went to the movies in New Glasgow, N.S. while her vehicle was being repaired. She bought a ticket and sat on the main floor - not realizing this theatre had segregated seating. She refused to leave when staff demanded she go to the balcony. She was dragged out by police and spent the night in jail. She was fined $20 and charged and eventually convicted with defrauding the government of one cent - the tax difference between the balcony and main floor seat. Her challenge of the tax evasion charge brought national and international attention and raised awareness of racial segregation in Canada. Desmond was posthumously pardoned in 2010 and next year, she will be the first African-Canadian and first woman, aside from the Queen, to appear on a Canadian bank note. Others led with their entrepreneurial spirit. Carrie Best was the first African-Canadian to own and publish a newspaper. Elijah McCoy invented and patented a type of lubricating cup that dripped oil onto moving parts of a train while in motion. He also invented and patented the first portable ironing board at his wife’s request. African-Canadians have roots which date back to the 1600s. They were soldiers, farmers, writers, newspaper publishers, activists, engineers, athletes, politicians and performers. It’s our wish that future generations will know the history of African-Canadians just as well as any other group or historical event in our country’s timeline. Let’s educate ourselves about the contributions African-Canadians have made to our society - for the better.

Bylaw makes faith groups feel unwelcome When Toronto City Hall’s rotunda filled up last week with the supporters of a Scarborough mosque, people who were watching shrugged. The protest was meant to disrupt a city council meeting, but didn’t. Mayor John Tory was away. The leader of Sakinah Community Centre spoke to some reporters, saying the mayor and city were trying to drive Muslims out of Toronto. Soon enough, everyone went home. But that won’t be the end of it. Just as homes in the city are becoming more unaffordable for families, faith groups, especially those supported by newcomers, are feeling squeezed out too. What brought Sakinah supporters downtown was desperation. The city shut
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto their mosque and school down a year ago, officially for safety reasons, but also because Sakinah occupies an industrial building. Drive around industrial areas in Toronto’s inner suburbs, and you see places of worship and private schools. Industrial buildings remain relatively cheap, but in 2013, the city closed that door with a new bylaw. The discrimination Saki-

nah’s imam, Said Rageah, was talking about is economic. He’s arguing the city knows faith groups like his can’t triple their budget to get buildings with commercial zoning. "By banning our places of worship and schools you are telling us to live elsewhere. We will not," he says in a letter to Tory. "This will not end. This is a human rights issue." Sakinah established itself around the time the bylaw took effect, and disagrees with city officials about what happened. Its leadership may have made a big mistake, but after renovating the building, it must fight for it. In the inner suburbs, Sakinah’s choices aren’t unique, and this problem will worsen as more faith
groups come into conflict with the city. Tory says the city will work with the Toronto Real Estate Board "to ensure that other religious groups are informed of where they can legally operate." But reminding real estate agents of their professional standards is not the same as solving the problem. A city which welcomes diversity and protects religious groups must do more for them besides explaining they now need to find much more expensive properties to call home. Edges of Toronto is a column about how people see life in Toronto differently, depending on where they live. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

City will study trails through Scarborough’s Guild Park East Scarborough’s Guild Park is getting a new $60,000 plan to improve its pathways at a time when the property’s revitalization is moving fast. After $20 million in renovations, residents around the former art colony expect its once-shuttered Bickford Residence to open as a privately-managed banquet hall and restaurant, the Guild Inn Estate, this spring. Plans are underway for a city-funded arts centre in buildings on the park grounds. Money for the trails plan is also in the city’s 2017 budget. "City officials are really giving Guild Park the attention it deserves," said John Mason, president of Friends of Guild Park and Gardens. There are 10 kilometres of trails within the 88-acre waterfront park, but they
’Smilezones’ unveiled at hospital Young patients at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital may now have something to smile about. Seven "Smilezones" were opened at the hospital’s Birchmount and General sites on Friday, Feb. 3. The new fun spaces consist of murals, sensory toys, drawing boards, tablet stations and TVs and were donated by the Smilezone Foundation, a charity founded by Adam Graves and Scott Bachly in 2012 with the aim of "putting smiles on children’s faces." "We are exceptionally grateful to Smilezone Foundation and to their donor, BMO Harris Private Banking, for these major facelifts to such important areas throughout our hospital," Andrée Robichaud, hospital interim president and CEO, said in a news release. "Smilezones" are located in the family maternity centre waiting areas and pediatric unit play rooms

The City of Toronto has budgeted funds this year to study trails in East Scarborough’s expansive Guild Park. that trail improvements should be a priority in the park. The city will reverse its proposal to cut grants that help operate hundreds of day cares in Toronto schools, Mayor John Tory says. "Our executive committee will protect the occupancy grants that the city provides to the 350 schoolbased child cares that receive them," Tory told reporters at John A. Leslie Childcare Centre in Scarborough Monday. "This $1.13 million investment in 2017 will mean that the parents of more than 8,000 children in Toronto will not see their fees go up on account of any change to those occupancy grants." Tory added the city will "work hard to see these costs transitioned to where they belong, namely the province of Ontario." As announced last month, the city budget will also fund 300 new child care subsidies."That $3
million investment will provide subsidies that are 100 per cent city funded, bringing Toronto’s total number of subsidies to 26,359,"Tory said. The mayor also said he sent a letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne asking her "to direct the Ministry of Education to directly fund the full cost of space used by all early learning" childcare and before- and after-school programs in the city. "I have asked her to immediately provide an additional 4,918 subsidies so that our ratios return to the levels they were at six years ago when she was the Minister of Education," Tory added. Toronto has more than 18,000 children on the subsidy waiting list. Councillor Janet Davis said Tory’s reversal is good news for parents. "But it’s a one-time solution, so I’m hoping that the City of Toronto will continue to fund child care in

and clearly that we need more funding for child care, that child care is way too expensive in the city . and the mayor heard them."
Davis noted the city’s child care funding has also "slipped" over the years."If we really are going to call on the province to fund child care in a big way, we

need to be there as a partner in funding as well." Toronto District School Board trustee Jennifer Story said parents got a oneyear reprieve, noting the proposed cuts would’ve meant "immediate, substantial cost increases to parents." "We have one year to figure out the longer term fix, so I look forward to working with the mayor and our other school boards to get the province to commit to a long-term lasting solution," she said. The province is also looking to create 100,000 new child care spaces in the next five years. "If going forward, we grow the child care system without looking at operating costs and the cost to families, we could end up in a situation where there aren’t people who could afford those very spaces we create," said Story, adding 75 per cent of Toronto families "currently say that child care is too expensive."

Black History Month helps fill in the gaps History still perceived through ’Eurocentric lens’
insidetoronto.com
FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Growing up, Neysa Pryce recalls learning about European and Canadian history in school, while attempts at preserving and celebrating black history were "futile." "All I took away from those lessons involved Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad (which are undoubtedly important), but little did I know there was so much more that wasn’t being told," the Toronto resident, who is of Trinidadian and Jamaican descent, said in an email. "I enjoyed learning about all kinds of history as a kid. But it would have been much more inspiring to learn about black cultural heritage as well." This year marks 21 years Black History Month has officially been recognized in Canada, though it has been unofficially recognized for many more. Throughout the month of February, Black History Month will be celebrated through discussions and presentations highlighting significant contributions made by black people. And though it’s been more than two decades since their stories have been officially told, Pryce feels a lot has yet to be revealed, making Black History Month all the more important. "I think we still have a long way to go," she said. "In many ways we still live in a society that idealizes nonethnic peoples and perceives or views things through a Eurocentric lens." Not only is learning about black history impor-
tant from an educational standpoint, but also for youth beyond the classroom, Pryce said. "This is crucial for positive role-modelling and developing strong self-identities and hopefully more well-rounded, educated, and confident black youth who feel they, too, have something of value to contribute to society," she said. "All people need to learn to associate positivity and optimism with black culture that involves the contributions of black people to the arts, science, technology, religion and philosophy. This, I think, will help to foster an atmosphere of mutual tolerance and respect of people from all backgrounds that can extend beyond the classroom." Nikki Clarke, president of the Ontario Black History Society, said even though a major victory was recently scored when the federal government

an currency, there is still "a lot of catching up to do." A Nova Scotia businesswoman, the late Desmond defiantly refused to a leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre in 1946, and
was jailed, convicted, and fined. It’s believed her case was the first known legal challenge against racial segregation brought forward by a black woman in Canada. "Many people had no idea who she was," Clarke said of Desmond when the announcement was made late last year. "And this was recent history." For Clark, getting the message out about black history isn’t saved for one month of the year; it’s a 365-day effort, she said. "We could not go about our day without the contributions of a black person," she said, noting the electric traffic signal was invented by African-American Garrett Morgan. Carl James, professor of the faculty of education and Jean Augustine chair in education, community and diaspora at York University, said supplementary programs such as Black History Month, Asian Her-
itage Month, and Aboriginal History Month "tells us something is wrong with the way Canadian history is taught. "What’s missing is the telling of Canadian history where all people are a part of it," he said. Righting the wrong could start with revising the way Canadian history is taught in the classroom, James said. "We could look at school programs, we could look at cultural celebrations," he said. "When all these people are included in the main Canadian narrative, to me that’s the first step. Until that happens, programs like Black History Month are needed as supplementary programs to address what’s missing. Look at Viola Desmond. A number of Canadians didn’t know about her existence. They had never heard of her. It’s an indication of the value of Black History Month."

Dick Lochan known as D’Juiceman dies at age 68 MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
ON L AT Y
Dick Lochan, a Scarborough man who became a promoter and preserver of Caribbean music culture, has died at the age of 68. A retired civil servant and journalist, Lochan started performing calypso in his middle age, carving out a reputation as D’Juiceman while gaining respect for offstage efforts to keep calypso, soca and steel band alive in Canada. "Sometimes you have a talent that takes a while to come out, and that was him," Juno-award-winning calypsonian John "Jayson" Perez said this month. He was "Uncle Dick" to young students in Pass The Torch, the Malvern calyp-
so school the pair ran since 2004, but when Perez met him Lochan was still working for the newspaper Contrast and wasn’t a singer. Lochan, however, seemed to be everywhere calypso was in Toronto, and soon found his voice. The men became friends and used to work on their songs together. "He had a way about him that commanded respect," and "that made people like him," Perez recalled. In Lochan’s honour, his family hosted a prayer service and performances at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto on Jan. 29. Lochan’s sister, Judy Crawford, was among those on stage. Seeing the number of people who came to support and honour her father, "was overwhelming and extremely beautiful," his daughter Michelle Lochan said afterwards. Lochan didn’t want to

lose his connection to his homeland, Trinidad and Tobago, and wanted to give Caribbean culture a place in Toronto’s melting pot, she said. "As a dad, this is something he made a priority, exposing us to our culture," said Michelle Lochan, remembering she met many up and coming black and Caribbean artists when Lochan, as a reporter, took her to events. His family asked people to donate to the Dick Lochan Scholarship Fund, supporting young calypso artists in Toronto. Calypso fans in the city tend to be older. Lochan, who served as president of the Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes, released three albums as D’Juiceman, and wrote three books in the Trinidadian dialect, wanted these calypso-lovers "to share this passion among their children. That’s what’s missing," his daughter

last September, when his friend said he wasn’t feeling well. "He wasn’t his jovial self," Perez added. There were tributes to Lochan on social media. On Lochan’s Facebook page, Raynier Maharaj, former managing editor of The Caribbean Camera, said Lochan "gave everything he had to his culture, and even kept his distinctive Trini accent after living for decades in Canada." Without his friend’s determination, Maharaj said, "calypso in Canada today would be far less than it is." Another friend, Trevor Farrell Senior, recalled a mischievous schoolboy in Trinidad, who after a joke or funny sound, "would always put on his patented straight-faced, innocent look," so he seldom got into trouble. "I can’t think of anyone among us who didn’t genuinely like (him)," Farrell added.

RAHUL GUPTA TO in Transit buses, streetcars and subway trains keep running. Neither will it matter all too much, at least publicly, to TTC management, which has largely refrained from commenting on the situation. And to their credit, both ATU and Unifor have pledged not to disrupt service while the dispute plays out. This is a pivotal year for both 113 and the TTC. Spot drug testing of TTC employees is likely to commence in a matter of months. At the end of the year, the TTC will launch a new customer service process once the Spadina extension opens, which

The TTC’s largest union is undergoing a civil war of sorts. Just last week Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) ejected much of the senior leadership of local shop 113, which represents the vast majority of TTC workers. The list of the ousted includes longtime 113 president Bob Kinnear, who the ATU accuses as the main orchestrator of an effort to split the local from its parent. Kinnear counters the Washington D.C.-based ATU is coercing its Canadian membership for support. He has publicly joined forces with Unifor in an effort to convince his many remaining supporters at 113 to break ranks with their American masters and join the Canadian labour giant instead (full disclosure: the Metroland Media Toronto newsroom is affiliated with Unifor). Of course, little of this inter-labour strife will register with the transit-taking public, if at all, so long as the

will see station collectors removed from their booths and dispatched throughout the station. In between, the TTC will launch the first phase of Automatic Train Control (ATC) - the main reason for all those weekend-long subway closures - which will see trains piloted via computer, albeit overseen by a single, human operator. Taken together with the overall trend of declining influence of the labour movement, it’s not hard to see a steady unravelling of the union’s strength. For transit riders facing annual fare increases in part to cover the costs of generous employee wages, this might not be such a bad thing. Regardless of which faction wins out, they’ll have to deal with a much-changed landscape for labour rights. Rahul Gupta is Metroland Media Toronto’s transportation and infrastructure reporter. Real Estate www.homefinder.ca Beat the winter blues with garden-inspired scents Many of us crave the fresh sights and scents of the warm weather in the depths of winter. And even though it’s not spring yet, you can beat the winter blues by transforming your home into a fragrant, garden-scented oasis. Fragrances from common backyard plants can enhance our mood and lift our winter-weary spirits. “Plants have scent characteristics that evoke specific emotions and even have wellness properties,” says Pam Helms, co-founder of Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day and scent sommelier. “There’s relaxing lavender, cool and crisp basil, energizing lemon verbena or soothing honeysuckle. Energizing scents work best in the kitchen, while something more relaxing is ideal for the bathroom or bedroom.” Helms explains how you can bring different scents into your home. “Natural, plant-scented candles or diffusers are an easy way to bring freshness to every room,” recommends Helms. “If you’re feeling creative, make your own indoor scented garden with pretty planters. Not only will it smell

De Villa named new medical officer of health The City of Toronto has officially announced Dr. Eileen de Villa as its new medical officer of health, with the long-standing public health professional set to take over the job March 27. Council approved de Villa’s appointment Tuesday, Jan. 31. She will take over from Dr. Barbara Yaffe, who held the post on an interim basis following the retirement of Dr. David McKeown last July. De Villa is currently the medical officer of health for
Peel Region, a position she has held since 2015. She has also worked as Peel Region’s associate medical officer of health for more than a decade, and as a professor at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health. She holds master’s degrees in health science and business administration from the University of Toronto and a certificate in health law from Osgoode Law School. "Throughout the selec-
tion panel process, she demonstrated solid leadership and management skills, in-depth understanding of public health issues and a passion for public health promotion that will surely benefit the residents of Toronto," said Board of Health chair Joe Mihevc. The incoming medical officer of health has an extensive knowledge of emergency preparedness, infectious disease control and public health policy development.

Happy to have home run hero Well at least we kept one of ’em. The Jose Bautista era in Toronto has been extended, and love him or hate him, Bautista has been a colourful, controversial and generally heavily-bearded figure on the Toronto sports scene for most of a decade. Even though he got hammered by that rat Rougned Odor, we will always have the bat flip, won’t we, surely the most iconic sports moment in Toronto sports in recent memory. I mean, really, what kind of a mother would name her son Rougned? And Odor, really? Jose has led the world in homers since 2009, going deep 249 times, all for the hometown Jays. Even so, he wasn’t the Jay’s first choice of the two to keep if they were only able to retain one of he and Edwin Encarnacion. The Jays reportedly
JOHN LYON Lyon Around made a decent four-year, $80-million offer to Encarnacion long before signing Bautista. The catch was they didn’t give him long to respond before they replaced him with Kendrys Morales on a much cheaper deal. Much has been made of Bautista’s lacklustre statistics last year, a .234 average with 22 homers and 69 RBI in 116 games. But pro-rated over a full healthy season they would look much better. Little has been made of Bautista’s offer to bat leadoff during his big free agent
year, no doubt giving up RBI opportunities and costing him dough on the open market. Sounds like a selfless, team-first guy to me. For my money, and I can tell you I don’t have much, Bautista is the guy I want at the plate with the game on the line. Although he may not be liked in places like Texas and Baltimore, he is mostly revered by Jay fans. The "Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose" chants at the Rogers Centre are haunting. With Bautista back for at least another year we may get one more kick at the can. And he may get a kick at Odor, who knows? For now the legend continues. John Lyon is a longtime Scarborough resident. His column appears every two weeks. You can contact him at johndlyon@rogers.com

Help kids in your community get a healthy meal paign has expanded its scope in recent years, bringing students in and getting them engaged in events to help raise funds and awareness for the program. "We realized we were great at talking to the consumers, great at talking to retailers and great at talking to manufacturers, but we weren’t getting our students involved," said Grocery Foundation executive director Michelle Scott. "It was a natural fit to get the children who are benefiting from (meal) programs to participate." The foundation selected
JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Having a healthy meal to start the day is a critical step in student success, but for far too many young people throughout Toronto and beyond, a good breakfast is hard to come by. To that end, the Grocery Foundation is set to launch its Toonies for Tummies campaign, collecting donations in select retail locations across the city with proceeds going to breakfast programs in the communities where the funds are collected. The long-running cam-
"A lot of times, they have no access to food and they’re too shy to speak out about it," she said. "They don’t want to be seen differently because they don’t have breakfast at home. "I asked one student at my school who uses (the school’s) meal program pretty frequently and she said it was really significant for her to be able to have something to eat because otherwise, she would just not have breakfast." The Toonies for Tummies campaign, which will run from Feb. 9 to 23, will give shoppers at Metro, Food Basics, Longo’s and
11 students from across Ontario to become student ambassadors, tasking them with promoting the foundation and hosting events. Toronto student ambassador Cedonna Ho, a Grade 11 student at Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute, hosted a movie night and sold treats and merchandise to raise over $400. Ho noted there is a definite need for student nutrition programs to help feed students who, for a variety of reasons such as a lack of time or family budget crunches, often come to school hungry.
need is like in the community and they match the money to the schools in greatest need. "There’s no administrative cost, so every $2 they spend will go straight to the schools." Since 2000, the Toonies for Tummies campaign has raised nearly $15 million in support of student nutrition programs. This year, the foundation has set a target of $650,000 in Ontario and has expanded to western Canada as well. For more information on the program, visit www.tooniesfortummies.ca.

By partnering with the Ontario Student Nutrition Program Network (OSNPN), the Grocery Foundation is able to see where the need is greatest in every neighbourhood. "The best part is, 100 per cent of the funds collected at stores stays right in the community where that money is donated," Scott said. "They (the OSNPN) know exactly what the

Even mild cases of hearing loss can lead to difficulties with processing speech. Hearing loss can develop so gradually people do not even realize they have it. Hearing better will seem like the sounds “slow down” when a person is speaking so we hear all the words.

Research shows that the longer an ear goes without hearing, the greater the effect of auditory deprivation can be. Hearing aids may prevent auditory deprivation as they provide stimulation to the auditory nerves and auditory cortex. If so, these are common signs of hearing loss and it is important to understand the potential impact of leaving it untreated. Did you know that untreated hearing loss can cause the auditory nerves and auditory cortex of the brain to not be stimulated properly? The technical term for this is “auditory deprivation.” People who suffer from auditory deprivation often have difficulty processing speech.
