Pilot program at two library branches casts light on depression TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Gabi Kresic eagerly basks in the bright lamp’s light at her neighbourhood Brentwood library branch.Toronto Public Library (TPL) is shining its own light on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) by introducing light therapy lamps at Brentwood branch in Etobicoke and Malvern branch in Scarborough, as part of a pilot project launched last week.The lamps mimic natural sunlight to treat SAD, a type of depression related to lack of sunlight, particularly in winter."It has been an impossible winter," Kresic said, of Toronto’s dark and dreary days throughout January and into February. "I think everyone suffers from SAD. Some of us, it affects us more."In Canada, millions of people suffer from a degree of SAD due to lack of sunlight. Between two and three per cent of the population has full-blown SAD, with symptoms that include fatigue, decreased energy, sleep disorders, weight gain, irritability, and feelings of anxiety and despair. Another 15 per cent have a less severe experience, the Canadian Mental Health Association reported.Daily, Kresic sits beneath the bright lamp for half an hour, ever since reading a newspaper article about it last Friday. Normally, she visits the library monthly.

Ensar Sehic uses a light therapy lamp at the Toronto Public Library Malvern branch on Toronto Public Library is conducting a pilot project to allow library users to use two light therapy lamps on a first-come, first-served basis at its Malvern branch in Scarborough, and at its Brentwood branch in Etobicoke. The lamps are used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Canadian Mental Health Association research indicates two to three per cent of Ontarians have SAD, while another 15 per cent have a less severe experience. "For me, it’s not about the winter; it’s not about the length of the days. It’s the sunlight and the blue sky," Kresic explained of her need for sunlight. "You may not have sun on 40 C days in summer. For me, sunlight is essential."Kresic is such a fan - she once had a light therapy lamp at home - she has offered to purchase and donate a third lamp to Brentwood branch.Each library branch has two lamps. After a three-month pilot and feedback from users, the lamps could be expanded to other branches, TPL officials said.Kresic suggest-

ed library staff start a signup sheet, and consider hosting public lectures given by experts "not just about light therapy, but also other things you can do (to combat depression) ".Lillian Galati is also a fan of the lamps, and urges TPL to expand the program.Since Friday, Galati has trekked twice to the Brentwood branch to read beneath the lamps, despite the fact her neighbourhood library is Richview branch. She plans to make use of the lamps twice a week."It’s nice to get the heat and the light on you, especially when there is

none (outside)," Galati said, while reading The Nest, a novel by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney.Dr. Robert Levitan, a professor of psychiatry and physiology at the University of Toronto, who is the depression chair at U of T and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, welcomes the idea. Last year, TPL reached out to Levitan to inform him of the proposed service. Levitan told TPL officials no such service existed in Toronto, and that he supported the idea, said Alex Carruthers, manager of learning and communi-

ty engagement for TPL.TPL paid $240 for each therapy lamp, giving people who might not otherwise afford one to try it out.Information is available at each library branch outlining the therapy lamp’s use, who should avoid it and how to use it. It is recommended users sit or read in front of the lamp between 20 and 30 minutes. Users should sit two feet away and not stare directly into the light.People with retinal disease, macular degeneration or diabetes, and those taking melatonin, thioridazine or lithium, should consult a doc-

tor before using light therapy lamps, TPL advised.Although the program is only in its second week, Tiziano Vanola, who heads the Brentwood branch, said users’ feedback has been positive. Some people have asked if the program will be expanded and even if they can donate a lamp to the branch. "Some people actually said they experience the ’winter blues,’ and they plan on using the lamps on a regular basis," Vanola said.It is the first time the light therapy lamps are being used in libraries in Ontario.TPL considered the program after learning of the lamps’ use in libraries first in Edmonton, then in Winnipeg.In 2014, Robin Mazumder, an occupational therapist and MacEwan University instructor, donated three light therapy lamps to the Stanley A. Milner Library in downtown Edmonton.The Awesome Edmonton Foundation had awarded Mazumder a $1,000 prize for his bright idea to bring light therapy to public spaces. Mazumder found a willing partner in Edmonton Public Library.TPL selected the Brentwood and Malvern branches because both are busy locations, Vanola said. The pilot program runs until the end of April. Small, local efforts can make a big impact miles away Stories of crime, tragedy and hate often dominate the headlines and while it’s our job to accurately report on these events, the effect of its continual presence on readers is not lost on us. That’s why this week we’re sharing a story across all our newspapers. Inspired by the efforts of residents in Etobicoke, it serves as a shining example of the good that exists in this world - and how seemingly small, local initiatives can make the greatest difference in the lives of others living thousands of miles away. Those are the stories worth celebrating. Local hockey families donated gently used hockey gear to a collection by Rotary Clubs of Etobicoke and Palgrave, destined for First Nations youth in six northern Ontario reserves. Only in its second year, the drive netted 25 times more equipment than the first - a whopping 40,000 pounds of gear, thanks to the generosity of parents and kids here in Toronto. Our reporter Cynthia Reason covered those initial efforts and was extended a special invitation to see the story through to its conclusion. She traveled with Rotary representatives and Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes to one of the reserves at Sandy Lake where 16 skids of hockey equipment was delivered to eagerly awaiting children. The detail that completed the experience? The Stanley Cup came too. Described as a ’historic first’ by Chief Bart Meekis, the Cup’s arrival in the remote community served as a reminder to local youth that opportunity exists for them, to "be all you can be." And certainly, receiving hockey pads, helmets, skates, sticks and jerseys helped fuel local hockey dreams. Something that may have seemed out of reach is now possible for these kids, thanks to the generosity of Toronto residents. It was also made possible by one Sandy Lake teacher who connected with Rotary to facilitate the donation. So we share this story to warm hearts. We share it to demonstrate how a small initiative can have a big, lasting impact in the lives of others. Those children will not forget the day the Stanley Cup arrived in their community, along with hockey equipment they couldn’t have afforded otherwise. These are the kinds of efforts we like to celebrate when they come across our news desks, because Toronto’s got more than its share of bad news. The good is also there, but sometimes it needs a little help getting up into the spotlight.

Toronto’s immigrants learn their working rights When Pragosh Antonipillai was young, he and his cousins worked well over 40 hours a week at Tim Hortons.They didn’t get overtime, and didn’t ask. They worked 12 or 24 hours at a stretch when their downtown Toronto stores were short-handed. "We would sleep on sugar bags in the back because that’s what we thought it means to be a good worker," Antonipillai recalls. For a first-generation Tamil-Canadian, this was normal, even expected, he says. Antonipillai’s parents were proud; at 15 and 16 he was making more than his dad as a Canadian Tire cashier. But working 30 hours a week while in high school tired him out. "People would assume I’m just this terrible stu-

His small group is a "diversity network" for the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, which also has volunteers from the Filipino, Chinese, Somali, Ethiopian and Eritrean communities.

The networks formed because unions weren’t getting into ethnic communities, and people from these ethnicities could sidestep communication barriers and suspicions, says Ram Selvarajah, a member of the Tamil network. Concerns about New Canadians working in Toronto are well-founded: in a 2013 survey 20 per cent of Mandarin-speaking recent immigrants here weren’t paid minimum wage, and only half received paid public holidays. "The myth immigrants are brought up to believe is you work 80 hours," says Selvarajah, adding young Tamils arriving here in the 1990s felt extra pressure to work. There were Tamil gangs in Toronto then, Selvarajah

says, so parents thought, "you were working or you were in trouble." Antonipillai and Selvarajah say Toronto employers still "pit" recent immigrants who won’t insist on their rights against other Canadians. They know immigrant women, in particular, "have less resources to fight back," adds Antonipillai, who argues 90 per cent Toronto’s kitchen staff are Tamil for the same reason. Selvarajah meets seniors working in Tamil stores for $5 an hour, under the table, looking on their employers as friends. Neethan Shan took the losses and, for a time, took the ridicule. But now he’s a city councillor and a political hero to the people who believed in him most. Early in his career, Monday’s victor in the Ward 42 byelection was tapped by a Tamil-Canadian community eager to have a voice in all levels of government. In 2006, at age 26, the math and science teacher won a seat on York Region’s public school board. Shan, who worked with youth in Malvern, moved his young family to Scarborough and launched himself into municipal and

provincial politics there. On Monday, he could finally say Toronto has its first Tamil-Canadian councillor. "It was our resilience that got us here," Shan told Tamils in the crowd. The community went through civil war, and "came here with nothing," he said. Shan ran against Raymond Cho for Ward 42 twice, without success. He ran for MPP in Scarborough-Guildwood once, then tried three times to take the ScarboroughRouge River riding. Ontario Liberals greeted the third attempt with laughter: "Perennial candidate Neethan Shan continues his lifelong goal of surpassing John Turmel’s Guinness Book of World Records for most elections contested," the party said in a release last May. A few months before, in January 2016, Shan won a public school trustee post for the Toronto board’s

he said. Shan, a diehard New Democrat who served as provincial party president for three years, became executive director of CASSA Council of Agencies Supporting South Asians - and as a champion of "racialized" communities across the city, built more support.

"I understand the struggles of other communities through the struggle that (Tamil-Canadians have) been through," he said, promising to fix Toronto’s "equity issue," and fight for workers’ rights with fellow progressives on city council. "I will stand up for every marginalized person in the city," Shan pledged. He arrived in Canada as a refugee from Sri Lanka at 16, and the next 10 years were like 40 for him, Shan said, "because I had to take work four times harder than a non-racialized white male." Asked what changed since he last tried taking Ward 42 in 2014, Shan said he always had a base of support wanting a "new voice, change, a new energy for the ward, more action." The school board must now decide whether to fill his vacant Ward 20 seat through byelection or appointment.

Cafeteria workers at University of Toronto Scarborough are on an indefinite strike, and their colleagues at York University Downsview are ready to join them on the picket line this week. Both campuses saw one-day walk-outs during a previous week by workers organized under UNITE Here Local 75 and employed by Aramark, a U.S.-based contractor. Around 70 Aramark employees launched a strike Thursday, Feb. 9, on the Scarborough campus because their earlier actions had no effect, said

David Sanders, a spokesperson for the local. "People are still stuck making poverty wages, and neither the university nor Aramark have done anything to address that," he said. Most of Aramark’s UTSC servers make $11.50 an hour, just above minimum wage. At Downsview, most are making $12.21, but servers at U of T’s downtown St. George campus who work directly for the university get $20 an hour, which the union considers a "living wage" in Toronto. The union said the approximately 200 employees it represents at Downsview will also go on an indefinite strike, as of Thursday, Feb. 16. The UTSC administration said the strike there will close some campus food outlets and reduce hours at others, but there will be other options available for food. "We see these employ-

Registration tips for spring/summer recreation programs Most popular programs will fill up in minutes DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Registration season for spring/summer recreation programming is coming up in Toronto and parents and recreation program users will be happy to know the city has made significant improvements to its much-maligned customer experience. Registration for spring/ summer programming starts at 7 a.m. on the following days: l Saturday, March 4 Etobicoke York district l Sunday, March 5 Scarborough district l Tuesday, March 7 North York district l Wednesday, March 8 Toronto and East York district The most popular programs will fill up within minutes. The city has improved its online system dramatically by increasing server capacity, which allows more people to use the system simultaneously. This will reduce the wait times people have experienced in the past. Plus, officials have improved the user interface to make searching for programs easier and registering simpler. "We’ve been working over the last year to improve the overall experience that customers have," said Howie Dayton, director of community recreation at the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department. Besides an improved online system, the city will have more staff at its call centres with longer call centre hours for customers to register by phone on registration days. The city has already seen positive results from the improvements it has put in place. During the December sign-up period, 26 per cent more registrations were

But, it’s still important that anyone planning to register for programming plans ahead of registration day. Additionally, the city will extend its call centre hours on March 1, 2, 3 and 6, running from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for people to ask questions. Call 416338-4FUN. The online system includes a search tool that allows people to seek out the

program they want, and where they want to take it, and mark favourites for programs they will try to register for on registration day. People should have their family and personal accounts ready before registration day. People should also have backup options as well in case their preferred programs fill up. You can also put yourself on a wait list for a program in case some participants pull out or if the city opens up additional spaces. Typically, people registering for programs are in the system right at 7 a.m. Summer camps and children’s learn-to-swim programs are most sought after and fill up quickly. This summer, the city plans to offer 84,500 summer camp spaces, 66,000

learn-to-swim spaces and 30,000 general program spaces in arts, sports and fitness for all ages. This doesn’t include things such as summer leisure drop-in programs happening at pools, community centres or gymnasiums across the city. The city of Toronto prides itself on its quality programming that is affordable and inclusive. As an example, children’s summer camps could range from $40 to $150 per week. There are a number of community centres across the city where all programming is free, including registered and drop-in programs. For families who can’t afford paid programming, the city’s Welcome Policy can provide financial assistance. For details, visit www.toronto.ca/wp.

In 2015, the city provided 622,000 hours of instructional programs, and Toronto sees an 81 per cent usage rate for those programs. While the usage rate is high, not all programs are filled and Dayton suggests people try them out. "The City of Toronto invests in quality of life. Recreation is essential to healthy and active living, social development for persons of all ages, whether its children, youth, adults and older adults," he said. One Toronto dad, Phil Vlach, is glad the city made recent improvements. The father of two remembers the days when he and his wife would circle programs in the city’s FUN Guide book, cross things out, make more circles, and then struggle to register their children on regis-

tration day. It was such an awful experience, he built a mobile app for iOS devices that helped users find programs and fill out certain fields for them. It was a lot of work to build the app, but he was happy to help other parents. "(The city has) come a long way and I’m glad they have. My goal with all this was, quite honestly, to help my family out and my circle of friends, and if other people benefited, fantastic," Vlach said. He said his app won’t be available for March registration. The city plans to continue improving the current online system and to roll out a new technology in 2018 that will make the user experience event better. It’s budget time in Toronto, a magical period when abstract numbers get bandied about like essential truths, and political announcements are rife with promises of funding to come. Take the TTC, which saw a hit to its revenue in 2016 thanks to lower than anticipated ridership. The TTC, which had to trim from its already pulped operating budget thanks to a mayoral edict, and liquidate its cash reserves just to reduce its projected deficit for this year. That same TTC will receive an $80-million funding boost to its annual subsidy from the city, it was announced this week by Mayor John Tory with a beaming Josh Colle, chair of the TTC, at his side. The money stands as part of a "historic" investment in transit, another glowing example of this mayor’s commitment to get the city moving, say his

threatening to burst the TTC’s wallet George Costanza-style, you the regular transit taker aren’t likely to see a requisite boost in the form of better service. The reality is no one or two or even three-time boost to spending is going to create a rush of new service, no matter what elected officials say, not when there’s little guarantee the same funding levels will stay in place for in the future. If Torontonians want a consistent amount of service befitting a major city’s transit system, they need to demand consistent fundings, not one-time payoffs. You get the service you pay for.

Youth walk-in mental health program expands services JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com From bullying to depression to anxiety, the ’What’s Up’ walkin program has helped countless children and teens deal with stress, mental illness and addictions counselling. Now, thanks to $200,000 in funding from the Echo Foundation and the Royal Bank of Canada, the program is set to widen its reach. Already operating out of six locations across the city - What’s Up walk-in clinics are located in south and northeast Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, York and downtown - the service is expanding to support youth aged 19 to 24 and add Tagalog, Cantonese, Mandarin, Farsi and Tamil language services. "We had previously only been serving young people up to the age of 18," said What’s Up walk-in lead agency network manager David O’Brien in a recent interview. "We wanted to make sure we were there for young people once they were past that age." The service is free of charge, requires no referrals or appointments and allows young people to speak with trained professionals about some of the issues they’re facing. Most sessions last about an hour, and many clients are return visitors. "About eight per cent of the people we see are dealing with suicidal thoughts," O’Brien said. "It’s something they need help

with and we’re embedded right in their community." He added that many What’s Up walk-in clients come from marginalized or racialized communities, which makes having counsellors working in several languages an important step forward. Demographic studies

showed that certain languages are more common in some pockets of the city, allowing the agency to allocate its resources appropriately. By allowing clients to speak in their native tongues, the clinics will break down a serious barrier to mental health care.

"We noticed some people had difficulty using translators in a confidential therapy setting," O’Brien said. "And often, even when the children and youth did speak English, it can be isolating for a parent to have a child who’s going through a mental health issue."

Sister Wanda Robson spoke at Chartland Junior Public School

Desmond was in her second year as a school teacher when she came across an article about America’s first black woman selfmade millionaire, Robson said. The woman made hair products for black women, and that gave Desmond the idea to set up a business and do the same. "She had to educate herself in what she wanted to do," Robson said of her sister. "So she went to Montreal and got her first diploma in hairstyling. She came back to Halifax and opened . a beauty parlour, but it was in her own home. As she proceeded in wanting to learn more, she would go back and started going to New York to get her knowledge, to get her diplomas."Desmond soon opened a beauty parlour shop along

Viola Desmond, a successful Nova Scotia entrepreneur, refused to leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre in 1946 and was jailed, convicted and fined. Her court case was the first legal challenge of racial segregation brought forth by a black woman in Canada. Desmond’s sister, Wanda Robson, 90, spoke to students at Chartland Junior Public School in Scarborough on Thursday, Feb. 9 as

Devan Bowden-Hussain, a Grade 4 student, said Desmond’s actions "changed history for the better." "The racism wasn’t fair," he said. "She made a big change in the world, and she helped stop racism at the time like Rosa Parks."

Registration has now opened for the spring session of the Toronto Police Service Community Police Academy. The eight-week course, designed to educate the public about policing, is free to anyone 16 years of age or older who lives, works or volunteers in Toronto. Toronto police history, neighbourhood policing, crime scene management, the criminal justice system, community safety and crime prevention are among the topics that will be covered. There will be in-class lectures and discussions as well as practical exercises. The course is taught by members of the police service who are considered subject matter experts. Classes are held every Saturday between April 1 and June 3 at the Toronto

The fundraiser takes place Feb. 25 and is run through The Coldest Night of the Year, which has raised more than $12 million working with charities that help the homeless since 2011. Michelle Cutts, senior development officer at Kennedy House, said there

are about 2,100 youth without a permanent home in the GTA but only 518 beds available in the shelter system. "So it is crucial that the shelters that are running, stay open and potentially grow," she said. Second Base, which was Scarborough’s only youth shelter, closed due to lack of funding in Oct. 2015. Kennedy House, located on Pape Avenue in East York, is now the most easterly youth shelter in Toronto and serves Scarborough and parts of Durham Region. The organization also

runs after-school programs and five group homes in Scarborough. There will be coldest Night of the Year walks in more than 100 Canadian communities. The Scarborough walk for Kennedy House begins at Guildwood Community Presbyterian Church at 140 Guildwood Pkwy at about 5 p.m. "It’s a great fun night," said Cutts, noting she expects about 150 walkers and 50 volunteers to take part. Concepts at TO AutoShow: The future of automotive design Every year, auto shows around the world showcase some of the forward-thinking designs and technologies coming from auto manufacturers. The 2017 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto is no different. A number of automakers will be showing off some bold designs this year that might just offer a glimpse into what cars we’ll be driving in the years to come.

Acura Precision Concept With an emphasis on high-contrast details and the intersection of modern, sheer surfaces and muscular, organic sculpting, the Acura Precision Concept communicates Acura’s focus on performance and prestige through its ultra-low and wide stance, long dash-to-axle ratio, deeply sculpted surfaces and the debut of a new Diamond Pentagon grille. The Acura Precision Concept’s crouched and athletic stance is further emphasized by its deeply sculpted side surfaces pouring over swelling rear wheel arches covering 22-inch wheels and tires. The forward-looking concept also features signature lighting designs – in front with its Jewel Constellation LED headlights composed of organically arranged fractal elements, and in back with floating LED tail lights.

Aston Martin AM-RB 001 The Aston Martin-Red Bull concept hypercar AMRB 001 will make its first appearance in North America — and global auto show debut — at the Canadian International AutoShow. The groundbreaking AM-RB 001, introduced in July at the Aston Martin headquarters in Gaydon, England, is an unprecedented fusion of form and function the likes of which has never before been seen in a road-legal vehicle. The hypercar boasts a lightweight carbon fibre frame and radical aerodynamics for unprecedented levels of downforce. At its heart is a mid-mounted naturally aspirated V12 engine with the potency to achieve a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio; 1 bhp per kilo of weight. The suspension system features innovative technology and employs principles honed by Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing’s Chief Technical Officer, over his 30-year career.

Genesis New York Concept Genesis’s striking ‘New York Concept’ luxury sports sedan hints at future design direction with its expressive and refined ‘Athletic Elegance,’ first seen in the Vision G concept and in production form with the Genesis G90 premium luxury sedan. Families come in all varieties Family isn’t always blood. This is a sentiment I learned early in life. Since I was three months old, until I was 11 years old, my mom left me with a babysitter. Her name was Betty Burris and she treated me like her own. There were times I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Burris’ residence. My mom never sent food with me. Betty never wanted her to. As far as she was concerned, I was part of her family.When former Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty designated the third Monday in February a statutory holiday in 2007, he said, "There is nothing more valuable to families than time together." He couldn’t be more right. It’s the thinking around family, and how it’s defined, that needs some rejigging. Through anecdotal evidence, and from my own experiences, the nuclear family - two married parents and their children - is becoming more and more

In the meantime, it’s a worthy discussion to have this February 20, with children. Let them know about the fact that families come in all varieties, not just the mom, dad, two kids and a dog narrative that still dominates. That way when they head to school and their classmate shows them family photos with two moms, or two dads, or when a classmate brings an old brother or sister, auntie or uncle to a school function, they un-

It’s important for children to understand early on that family is not always about sharing bloodlines, households or the same family name. That the Stanley Cup would come to a remote place like this, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of it,” Meekis said shortly after parading the Cup around Sandy Lake on the back of his pick-up truck, trailed by an escort of 16 flag-waving, skidoo-driving members of the Sandy Lake Canadian Rangers. While Lord Stanley’s 22-hour stay in Sandy Lake was widely celebrated as a “historic first”, Meekis pledged it most certainly won’t mark the Cup’s last long voyage to the remote flyin community nearly 1,500 kms northwest of Toronto. “It will be back up here again in 2020, but next time it will be one of our young hockey players bringing it north as a Stanley Cup champion – hopefully with the Canadiens,” the Montreal fan said with a determined grin. “To us, the Stanley Cup promotes education, it promotes discipline, and it also promotes

that you can be all you can be – and that’s something our kids need to see.” While the Cup’s arrival provided plenty of incentive to young hockey players in Sandy Lake to strive for NHL greatness, the accompanying delivery of 16 skids of gently used hockey gear collected by the Rotary Clubs of Etobicoke and Palgrave – and shipped free-of-charge courtesy Wasaya Airways and the Grimes’ brothers Etobicokebased logistics company, MGA International – brought with it the means with which to fulfill a hockey dream that, for many, would’ve otherwise been out of reach. Freight costs to communities like Sandy Lake, which are only accessible by land via ice roads for a few short weeks in the winter, drive the price of even the most basic of goods up at least threefold. In a community where even a 24-case of no-name bottled water sells for $27.79, that means the price of already-costly hockey equipment becomes prohibitively expensive for most families. “A lot of our youth want to get on the ice, but can’t afford the skates, which is sad because people here go hard for hockey – they a b s o -

lutely love it,” said Jenn Elwell, the now “super famous” teacher who arranged the hockey donation with Rotary Etobicoke’s Laura Latham after stumbling upon a story about the club’s hockey drive on Facebook. “So for me, seeing my kids walk out of the gym today with skates in their hands and big smiles on their faces just melted my heart. It was so beautiful, because I know how much it means to them.” Pittsburgh Penguins superfan Derek Monias, 13, not only walked away from the distribution event at Thomas Fiddler Memorial Elementary School last week with a hockey bag stuffed with new gear, he was also able to cross a key item off his bucket list. “I’ve always wanted to see the Stanley Cup in person and now I have. It’s every hockey player’s dream to one day achieve winning it,” he said with a shy smile. “This day, we all feel happy. The people that brought the Cup here have put a smile on everybody’s faces here in Sandy Lake and made them feel good inside.”

Shelter beds were laid out on the floor of the city hall rotunda, and faith leaders dished out soup to city staff and council members.The initiative was meant to show just how badly homelessness reduction is needed in the city. The people behind Ontario Science Centre exhibits HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The most successful exhibit to come to the Ontario Science Centre was Body Worlds - even staying open 24 hours on its final day. Most of the other exhibits at the venerable museum located on Don Mills Road, just south of Eglinton Avenue, are created inhouse. To get a look behind the scenes, Metroland Media interviewed the two team leaders: Mary Jane Conboy is the director of science content and design; and Glenn Shaver is responsible for the temporary travelling exhibits. Q: Describe what you do. A: MJC I work with researchers and designers and we come up with ideas for exhibits and then we fully research it, develop the content, work with a team to finesse it. We co-ordinate, draw, fabricate, build and install all the in-house exhibits on display at the

GS: As the director of featured products, my team presents what’s not conceived and built in-house, but the exhibits that come from somewhere else in the world and it’s typically short term. Q: What is the best part of your job?

A: MJ For me, it’s the diverse group of people I get to work with. You’re learning all the time and in-house you’re working with a wide range of talented people and everyone is really at the top of their game. So you’re getting to work with people who are really driven . The range of expertise we have

is so unusual for most organizations, so you really get exposed to different talents from design to scientists to fabrication works. Q: What does an exhibit have to have to be worthy of the Ontario Science Centre? A: MJ We want it to be really fun, but we also want people to learn things and

provoke dialogue with the group you come with. We want it to be edgy, provoke curiosity but also there are some basics we want to cover. It should have a blend of things that surprises you, is really fun and makes you think. It’s trying to get something that captures all of that.

Q: What’s been the best exhibit that’s come to the science centre? A: GS That’s a tricky question. The stuff we bring in can range in topic and sometimes we’ve done things that are branded, like the science behind Harry Potter, and that was very popular. It’s not an everyday science that people can relate to but it was of interest. From a success perspective, I would say Game on 2.0. It was popular for people young and old and Body Worlds. That was open 24hours for the final day. It had the most attendance and the most buzz. Q: What is the biggest misconception about your job? A: GS People think I travel all over the place and look at films and exhibitions all day and that’s a myth. I’m not travelling to exotic lands choosing exhibits, no. I only travel if staff is unsure about an exhibit we’re looking at and it’s not even always me!

Art can be a valuable tool in instilling essential thinking tools in children, including the ability to recognize and develop patterns, the ability to form mental representations of what is observed or imagined, and

the ability to observe the world around them. · Art can improve memory and focus. Studies show that listening to music can stimulate parts of the brain responsible for memory recall and visual imagery. In addition, background music played in a classroom has been shown to help students remain focused while completing certain learning tasks. · Art can positively affect how students approach other courses. Studies have shown that incorporating arts into core curriculums can have a number of positive effects on students’ overall academic performance and benefit students socially. Studies indicate that students involved in such integrative programs are more emotionally invested in their classes and work more diligently than those not studying in such conditions. In addition, students may learn more from one another when the arts are integrated into core curriculums than when they are not.
