Many mouths they see tell an unpleasant story. Too often, people in Toronto can’t afford dental care, even though they’re working, and they don’t know where to go for help. "They’re having to make very tough decisions. As a result, a lot of them are living in pain," says Dr. Amanda Morel, team co-ordinator for a free dental clinic which opened in an Agincourt office last month. Since 2005, a volunteer urban dental clinic worked around a single dental chair in a Lawrence Avenue building attached to the general campus of Scarborough and Rouge Hospital. Now, these dentists with heart have installed three dental operatories above the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant l See MORE page 8

160,000 KM POWERTRAIN LTD WARRANTY**

Why I won’t be there for the fireworks Rebeka Tabobondung Indigenkaus (my name is) Wasausking Ndonjaba (I come from) Amik Dodem (I am Beaver clan) This simple statement took me 40 years to learn. This is who I am — but I had to fight like hell to figure it out. I grew up in over 13 towns and cities across the country and experienced the public education system and its imagined Canadian identity in every one of those places. Yep — I learned the propaganda that every Canadian my age learned: We are a nation built on universal values of democracy, human rights and environmentalism intimately connected through a "mosaic" of diversity, a northern climate and pristine landscape. Let’s get real … all Canadians must question the legitimacy of these "imaginary" claims due to the historical hatred directed toward the First Peoples of this land and the ongoing lack of awareness, education, and movement building toward reconciliation and the forging of reciprocal relationships based on equality and respect. Just today I was on Facebook calling for the resignation of Sen. Lynn Beyak, who said earlier this year that "good deeds" and "remarkable works" on the part of well-meaning residential school officials have been ignored in favour of more negative reports by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Just yesterday I was donating mon-

ey to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the relatives of Barbara Kentner, an indigenous woman living in Thunder Bay who was the victim of a drive-by assault in January 2017 by a white man who shouted, “I got one,” after throwing a very large trailer hitch at her body from a moving vehicle. My challenge is to answer the call of one of Canada’s most worthy senators, the former chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee who, in response to Beyak’s statements during a public forum in Ottawa on missing and murdered indigenous women, asked Canadians: “Why can’t you always remember this?" He was referring to the deliberate amnesia that Canadians have when they ‘imagine’ who they are. “Why can’t we remember and honour the truth of our nation ... this is about memorializing those people who have been the victims of a great wrong." I’m remembering who and what Canada actually is … and therefore I’m imagining what we could become. A confederation that chooses not to forget its past - but rather memorializes it in order to imagine and build something better. How about Kanata 150? Acknowledging the rich history already embedded deep in the land that includes the principle that rights, equity and respect should belong to all. In this year of Truth and Reconciliation, this 150th year of Confederation, we talked with a few descendants of the original residents of Canada (Kanata) to ask: "What does it mean to be an indigenous person in Ontario today?" (Top left) Bill Trodd and Crystal Tabobandung read a story their grandchildren just before dinner in their Magnetawan First Nation home. The two youngest of the blended family’s children read and finish after school chores. (Top right) The opening leg of the First Nation Water Walk around Lake Simcoe raises awareness of the importance of fresh water. Patricia Watts of Wabigoon Lake First Nation has the honour of collecting the water to be carried on their journey. (Middle) Blayne McLeod moved to Toronto to pursue a dream career in the arts. Raised in Bigstone Cree Nation reserve in Wabasca, Alta., the 26-year-old relocated to Toronto three years ago and joined the Centre for Indigenous Theatre. (Bottom) Award-winning actor/producer Jennifer Podemski is currently in production of Future History (APTN), a documentary series about indigenous knowledge and history. For the whole story with video, photo galleries, maps, stories and more words from the people you are reading here please see insidetoronto.com.

Closed Sakinah Centre has yet to find new home A Scarborough mosque and Islamic school is spending another Ramadan shut down by the City of Toronto. "Assembly use," classes and prayers included, was banned at the Sakinah Centre in January 2016 because of fire safety violations. Another problem is that Sakinah’s management bought the Birchmount Road industrial building just days after a bylaw against schools and houses of worship on such properties went into effect. Sakinah brought 1,000 people to Toronto City Hall earlier this year to protest the situation and was promised help finding a new location. Saed Rageah, the centre’s founder and imam, said Sakinah’s not giving up. "We want to worship close to where we work, and

He noted that last month, the Ontario Municipal Board granted the Canada Kanthaswamy Temple permission to hold services in a warehouse near Sakinah on Birchmount until March 2018, when the temple’s permanent home should be rebuilt. "We’ve been asking the city to give us a similar exemption until we’ve sorted our problem." However, local Coun. Michael Thompson continued to describe Sakinah as a group which "seems to think a set of rules for everybody should not apply to them." The ban will stand and the fire code violations are under review, he said. "There’s a number of actions the city can take and will take."

work close to where our children go to school," he said this week. Of the alternatives the city showed to Sakinah, Rageah said, "some were extremely over our budget," while others were too far away or rental properties too small for its community. Scarborough-Agincourt Coun. Jim Karygiannis, who is working with Sakinah, said finding a new home won’t be easy. The same is true for many religious institutions struggling to find space in Toronto. "We need to make sure people have a place to pray. The only place we have is in the industrial areas," Karygiannis said last week. "This is only going to translate into escalating tension, and I don’t want to see that." Meanwhile, Rageah said Sakinah is paying $13,000 a month for space to pray in

On a Friday night in October 2015, Scarborough paramedic Timothy Lofgren was dispatched to a major crash on Hwy. 401 in Durham Region. There were up to 20 vehicles involved, including transport trucks. "In the end, there were four people who were killed; two of them were children," Lofgren said. "(There was) a lot of carnage there with the vehicles." But four critically injured patients were also saved that night, and they would all recover from their injuries. As one of the first advanced life support paramedics on scene, Lofgren took control and helped triage patients. "We were getting an idea of what was happening and who needed to be cared for and which patients were going to be extracted first,"

ABOUT US

We won’t be intimidated A group of disgruntled city councillors in Brampton seem to be confusing freedom of the press with freedom from the press. Angry with recent coverage by the local newspaper, some councillors are proposing a motion to scrutinize the media’s questioning of elected officials. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate reporters. The motion calls for all media inquiries to be posted on the city website along with responses. Councillors want future meeting agendas to include time to respond to media coverage. Meanwhile, at least one member of Brampton council has taken to Twitter, suggesting the local paper isn’t providing "real news." If it sounds reminiscent of the antics of President Donald Trump and his staff, that’s because there’s a strong and troubling parallel. This is all in reaction to assertive reporting that is critical of the city’s leadership. Councillors say they have put the press on notice. Such a statement demonstrates a blatant disregard for, or ignorance of, the checks and balances already strongly entrenched in the Canadian media system. Accountability starts with the news outlet itself. Complaints can be made directly to a journalist, editor, or publisher. If the response is unsatisfactory, individuals can contact the press council. The National NewsMedia Council deals with matters concerning fairness of coverage, relevance, balance and accuracy. Its members (including this newspaper) abide by its decisions. It’s a free and open process for the public. When media make a mistake, we own it very publicly. That’s not something everyone can say. And there is the law. Canada has very strict libel laws. These laws protect the reputation of individuals and organizations from false and derogatory remarks. Media are bound by these laws. There have been no formal complaints made regarding recent coverage of Brampton. Instead, this is about a group of councillors lashing out because they are upset with what strong local reporting has unearthed. These councillors forget that media are not accountable to elected officials. Media are accountable to the public, the same group whose money these councillors are spending. Claiming to put the press on notice is a poorly disguised attack on the fundamental freedoms laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Councillors are trying to stifle critical voices and control our free, independent and responsible media. Any attempt by elected officials to limit the free flow of information is an attack on the basic democratic principles our society upholds. It won’t work. Metroland Media and all its newsrooms will continue to hold our elected officials to account and report stories that are in the best interest of our readers.

Millennials don’t want suburban Toronto dream Ken Greenberg builds cities, or rather, rebuilds them. And he told an audience of Liberals in Scarborough it’s time to rebuild Toronto’s inner suburbs. Redesigning them will be a "wrenching transition," Greenberg says, and our biggest project of the next two generations. A generation ago, urbanists like James Howard Kunstler predicted North America’s runaway suburban dream would start to collapse when oil became unaffordable. Oil’s now cheap. But Greenberg told the Liberal faithful we must transform large parts of Toronto, or our city won’t stay successful. "Downtown poverty was exported to Scarborough and Etobicoke because of where people prefer to

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto live," the University of Toronto professor says. Growth in its suburbs outpaced Toronto’s core until 2006. Then the script flipped. Millennials have a new North American dream, Greenberg says. They don’t want to live in spread-out suburbs where nothing mixes with anything else. They want to live where they work, walk to get gro-

ceries. They don’t even want a car. They’ve gone downtown, and companies follow them there. Future success will go to Toronto’s mixed-use neighbourhoods. Where does that leave the poorer areas of Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York? Greenberg says we must reverse engineer our wide surburban roads back into lively, walkable streets with more public places where we can meet. Toronto’s multicultural identity is at risk otherwise, because the suburban pattern "keeps people segregated." Surface parking lots and parts of hydro corridors become new mixed use neighbourhoods, a weakness becoming a strength. Can we do this with the suburban politicians we

have? No, probably. Many of them fought, and still fight, to save their "single-family neighbourhoods" against renters, roomers, townhouses, midrise condos, offices for midwives on a major road, or street parking, because certain long-time residents in houses - the people they listen to most - don’t want change. But unless Greenberg is wrong, big changes must come, or those neighbourhoods will stagnate as Toronto’s core becomes unaffordable. He was speaking to almost 100 federal party members. Some may become city councillors or MPPs. Let’s hope they’re brave. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

More volunteer dentists, New kids’ shelf added to Free Little Library Children are now hygienists needed able to see and select their own to open full time books l Continued from front

Health Care at 4158 Sheppard Ave. E. "We’re hoping to have all three busy, because we have such a waiting list of patients and there’s such a need," Morel said last week. "We’ve had people sitting in our chairs who’ve never had a cleaning before." One in five Ontarians can’t afford to visit a dentist. The province provides some coverage for children, seniors, people on Ontario Works, but the working poor are mostly on their own. That leads to emergency room visits - 61,000 in 2015, according to the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) - which cost the system far more than preventive care would. On her phone, Morel keeps an image of one Scarborough resident’s broken teeth. The woman was in constant pain, until she found the clinic and a lab in Markham made a set of dentures for free. "Some of the most rewarding work I ever do is here," said Dr. Omar Usman of Whitby, one of 10 volunteer dentists. His hope, he said, is that people who benefit "can use it as a bridge" to self-sufficiency, and pay it forward. "It’s about building a community, not a BandAid." Dentists, the Henry Schein Corporation in Canada and the Rotary Club of Scarborough all gave equipment to the clinic (its number is 416-289-4349), which sees patients from across the Greater Toronto Area. But Morel needs more than 40 dentists donating a half-day a month, along with more hygienists, before the clinic can open

A Scarborough woman’s teeth show advanced decay. A free dental clinic for the working poor helped relieve her pain and got her a set of dentures. every day. The clinic, which only serves people after a financial screening, also needs a stable funding source. Morel is thinking of charging the paying public halfprice for cleanings on weekends to raise money. After the provincial Liberals released their budget this year, local dentists told Scarborough MPPs they didn’t think the system providing free dental care for needy Ontarians was working well. On Tuesday, ODA president Dr. LouAnn Visconti said the organization, whose members once provided free care in their own offices, wants all Ontarians to receive dental care. "Our motto is, ’No one should go to bed in pain,’" Visconti said from Timmins. The province took over dental care programs for the poor in the late 1990s. Since then, governments have expanded eligibility, but haven’t provided enough funding for the programs, and at $5.60, said Visconti, Ontario spends the least per capita in Canada on dental care.

Children won’t need to ask adults for a hand anymore with the new children’s addition to the Little Free Library in the Bluffs. The community on Bluewater Avenue decided to add another shelf to their already existing library just for children, so they can see and choose their own books without any help from adults. Books for an older audience is available on the top shelf and children’s books are available on the bottom. The new addition brought in many young visitors to the library. Striking zoo workers return to table with new offer DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The union representing striking Toronto Zoo workers will be bringing a comprehensive response to the bargaining table Wednesday, in hopes of ending a four-week-long strike that union leadership say is endangering both zoo animals and the management staff who must care for them. "We are concerned about the well-being and care that our animals are receiving right now," said Christine McKenzie, president of CUPE Local 1600 at Toronto City Hall June 6. "We know that the management and administrative staff currently taking care of our animals have the best intentions, but equipped they are to take not care of the

animals for this length of time." McKenzie said reality hit home earlier this week, when zoo management asked that a veterinary technician cross the picket line to deal with a newborn cloud leopard cub that was in distress and not eating. "They couldn’t get the cub to eat and that’s a critical situation," said McKenzie. "We decided the health of the cub was paramount to our labor dispute. So she went in there from eight in the evening to three in the morning. She got it to where it was stable and they took over. The situation brought home for us the fact that we really need to be back to work." McKenzie would not go into detail about what the union’s comprehensive re-

sponse to management is. But in the past, the union has claimed that management demands to allow unionized workers to be replaced by outside contractors would threaten the zoo’s role in conservation. As it is, she said that the length of the strike could put breeding programs at risk. "Our black footed ferret breeding program (is at particular risk)," she said. "They require an intensive, specialized breeding protocol. It is very hands-on, labor-intensive, skilled work. They all live individually so their breeding needs to be carefully managed. We’re at real risk of losing the whole breeding season." McKenzie said the union is also concerned about the management and administrative staff who are now caring for sometimes dangerous animals.

Throughout the years, international students from over 15 countries have come to Canada to study at Metropolitan Preparatory Academy. We make it a priority to give our students the chance to experience Canadian culture and practice the English language during their stay and we believe there is no better way to learn or improve knowledge about culture and language than to live with a local homestay family. Scrap it! BEHIND THE SCENES: Work starts early in the morning at the Canada Iron & Metal Co. All manner of vehicles pull in to the 1.75 acre lot at the north-east corner of Jane and Dundas streets, with their refuse aboard. After being weighed and paid the scrap is unloaded in a heap in front of a crane

equipped with an electromagnetic grappler, and the sorting begins. Canada Iron & Metal, after all, is a recycler and without a place for everything and everything in its place, nothing would get done. Brass, copper, stainless steel, e-waste and more find their way to bins and eventually out of the lot, to dealers and manufacturers for re-purposing.

Diversity. Unity. Prosperity. Those three words are the driving message behind a downtown Toronto event celebrating Ramadan and bringing people of all faiths and backgrounds together, said the organizers. Fast in the 6, which will be held Friday, June 9 at Nathan Phillips Square, 100 Queen St. West, is the brainchild of Dany and Lisa Assaf. The Toronto philanthropists, who celebrate Ramadan, joked they would have everyone over to their home to break the fast if there was enough space. "The event in these times affirms and reaffirms Toronto’s global leadership as a place of social and economic opportunity," Dany said. "That’s why Canada is great; it embraces all traditions." Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the month of fasting for Muslims, which is observed from dawn to dusk. A breaking of the fast happens together with family and friends nightly at sunset. Ramadan began May 26 and ends June 24. "I hope everyone comes out and enjoys," Lisa said. Toronto Raptors home game host Mark

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Dany and Lisa Assaf are organizing Fast in the 6, an evening of arts and entertainment, fun and food, coinciding with Ramadan, to celebrate the diversity of Toronto. Strong will MC the event, which will run from 8 to 11 p.m., and will feature Toronto Symphony Orchestra chamber soloists, pop artist Yuna, comedian Mo Amer, and a fireworks display at 10:20 p.m. For information, visit http://fastinthe6.com.

East Scarborough Storefront/Photo

The East Scarborough Storefront is participating in this year’s Great Canadian Giving Challenge until June 30.

Take the lead and donate $1 to Storefront Ontario Savings Bonds. Bonds that build Ontario. Build a stronger future for yourself – and for Ontario. Ontario Savings Bonds are a safe, flexible investment guaranteed by the province. They’re a perfect way to celebrate Ontario’s 150th anniversary. Ask for them by name where you bank or invest.

The third annual Great Canadian Giving Challenge is back, and the East Scarborough Storefront is asking residents to say "yes" to charitable giving until Friday, June 30 by donating $1. For every dollar donated to the Storefront through www.givingchallenge.ca, an entry will be submitted into a draw for the charity to win an additional $10,000 donation. A minimum donation of $3 is required. More than $8 million was do-

nated to approximately 8,600 charities in 2016. The Storefront is participating for the first time, and if they win, they will use the prize donations toward creating leadership and growth opportunities for residents of the Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park neighbourhood. The grand prize draw will be held on Canada Day - Saturday, July 1. For more information, visit www.thestorefront.org.

It started as a one-day festival in October 2015, attracting about 100 people. Since then, the Scarborough Community Multicultural Festival has grown to a three-day event. And this year, the festival will feature a parade and more than 30 performances, and is expected to draw a crowd of 5,000. "We decided to start this because there isn’t an actual festival that will have all the cultures," said Steven McKinnon, president and CEO of Kinron Associates Event Services Management, which is organizing the event along with Scarborough Residents Unite Neighbourhood Association. "There are several festivals that gear to one particular culture. We are combining everything together into one festival, and it’s gotten bigger since we first started." The third-annual festival takes place Aug. 11 to 13 at the Scarborough Civic Centre, Albert Campbell Square. Billed as "one of the best parties of the year," the free event will have cuisine, music, revelry and

visual and performing arts entertainment. "They’re going to experience diversity and the culture that Canada has and what Scarborough offers," said McKinnon. "There would be live performances, there would be some arts, there would be the film, there would be the food component, so there will be every aspect of culture." McKinnon is also putting out a call for talent, volunteers and vendors for the festival. "We’re looking for diverse talent to perform. It could be a band, it could be an individual," he said. "We do pay them. Either they would be paid an honorarium or it would be a set fee that we would be issuing them." Volunteers are needed to deal with dignitaries, stage talent, vendors and the public. "We would love to get at least 200 (volunteers). If we get more, that makes things a lot easier," McKinnon said. The venue has space for up to 200 vendors, who will be charged a "reasonable" fee. "It could be food, it could be art, it could be information," McKinnon

said of the vendors. "I suppose it could be a new business that just started up in the area. They’re welcome to showcase their product." On the morning of the second day of the festival, a "parade of nations celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday" will begin at Thomson park. "That will have representation of every country and culture that is in Canada, so that is a new item that we’re going to be having this year," McKinnon said. "It (parade) will end at the Scarborough Civic Centre, so all the floats and the cultures are all going to be coming out onto the square." A Canadian citizenship ceremony will take place on the afternoon of the opening day. "It’s going to be special because we’re going to have 150 candidates take the oath," McKinnon said. There will also be movie screenings at Cineplex Scarborough on the first two days of the festival and a fashion show on the second day.
