Mela slated for Scarborough Separately and together, performers schooled in five South Asian languages will take the stage in Scarborough this Saturday to “recognize the diversity within South Asians and to celebrate our contributions to Canada.” The first Toronto Mela, a free nonprofit festival in Albert Campbell Square from noon to 9 p.m., features more than 50 singers, dancers and
actors, including Tricube Dance, Taal Multicultural group, and Dance Group of Poroma. SEPARATE PERFORMANCES Rather than present a single homogenous image of South Asian culture, the festival from 2 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. is reserved for separate performances in Tamil, Hindu,
Bengali, Urdu and Punjabi. Afterwards, there will be two hours of “pan-South-Asian” performances, said Mahbub Hasan, co-ordinator of the Mela for the Council of Agencies Serving South Asians, an advocacy group hoping to bring different elements of the diverse community together.
